Amitābha, almsgivers.

I am Brother Genshu, Shaolin Sect, here to answer all your questions about Wuxia.

Leave donations by the door.
No meat, dairy, or alcohol, please.
>>
>>36651181
c-can monks ma-marry?
pls
>>
>>36651181

Completely random question with only the vaguest resemblance to the story. How would endgame Saotome Ranma compare to the Ten Young Heroes and all the other martial artists there?
>>
>>36651181
Gonna throw up a request for a pastebin of recommended works and (if possible) download locations.

Aside from that, what would you say are key points to keep in mind while writing a wuxia character? I'm guiding a few friends through Wulin character creation and doing my best to explain some of the concepts and tropes therein, but I'm not exactly an expert, so it's mostly just a few personal observations.
>>
>>36651181
So, I'm thinking of running a wuxia adventure for my buddies, going on about the early 1900s, with the whole western influence, decay of the traditions bit.
Any tips I could research so I don't suck completely at it?
>>
>>36651240
That is an excellent question, but a complicated one.

Chen Buddhist Monks like myself are not allowed to marry as long as they stay with the sect in question; it breaks our vows.

However some DID, either by leaving the sect or by not being very good monks at all.

Daoist monks are actually priests, and can indeed have families, though abstaining from other things, such as alcohol or too much sex, is still common.
>>
>>36651277
In a similar vein how would Storm Dragon fare if he was saddled helping out in Journey to the West?

Mechanics question, between Legends of the Wulin and Weapons of the Gods which do you prefer?
>>
>>36651277

It depends on the Hero and the situation.

I will say however his tenacity and adaptability would make him a formidable member, especially if he'd lost one before and his ego was on the line.
>>
>>36651335
Huh, enlightening. Thanks.
>>
>>36651302
There's so many that are so enlightening that it's hard to pick.

There is a website called Wuxia Edge which keeps track of various releases of shows, films, and even videogames that is quite useful, and the owner even used youtube to put up many, MANY wuxia series that Wulin Sage was fond of, though it seems to have been taken down now.

Could I interest you in some mapo tofu, Brother Genshu? Don't worry, my recipe uses mushrooms, not minced meat. It's perfectly safe for your vows. And quite tasty, if I may say so myself. Though I admit I'm biased, my mother gave me this recipe.

Anyway, as for my question: How often do they hold these "Top Ten Young Heroes" tournaments? Given the age restriction I can't imagine you could hold one more than once every five to ten years without getting overlap of competitors.
>>
>>36651181
Of the members of your sect are there any you feel would be able to have a match with Qiu Qiang without risking the lives of either participant while still having a victory without surrender? If he were to force the issue and you were unable to flee the situation would you fight to defend yourself or others?
>>
>>36651390

Goddamn, know I want to know how he'd fair in the tournament. Thanks for the answer.

It's not like he'll get more fiancees this time either, right, riiiiiight?
>>
>>36651488

Fuck you asshole now I'm drooling.
>>
>>36651317
Any research on Shanghai in the time period is crucial, and it's also remarkably interesting, often called "The Paris of the East" and having more international powers from more places then almost anywhere on Earth.

Other then that, just make stuff up; history is important only as an outline.

You know sometimes there's talk about a "Southern" Shaolin Sect in movies just because the Cantonese parts of China feel left out?
>>
>>36651476
Did storm dragon kill anyone important to you?
>>
>>36651531
I was trying to be polite, feeding monks is a mitzvah (Yes, I'm Jewish. My grandparents got really lost at sea). It was only proper to offer him a meal.
>>
>>36651355
From what I've heard of Storm Dragon, he was not so powerful as to jump ten thousand Li, nor could he pull of hairs and make...stuff with them, so he might not be as powerful as all that.

And between the two systems I prefer LotW, thogh WotG has many more touches and styles, which I also liked.

The many, MANY subtle existing wuxia references in both games is highly entertaining.
>>
>>36651563
>Cantonese parts of China feel left out
Heh. Thanks for the advice, will look into Shanghai's and a bit more into the general history just to have a better definition of how I'll set it.
>>
>>36651488
Thank you, I shall indeed partake of this fine Sichuan delicacy.
Spiciness is nothing to an enlightened monk, because pain is merely an illusion.
One that really, really hurts.

The TTYH Tournament isn't regular occurrence with set time intervals, but usually is only held when ALL of the last Ten are too old to compete, which can sometimes be a long time indeed considering the age differences between the different hopefuls.
>>
>>36651495
Several, actually, yes.

And yes, I would defend others. If he forced the issue that is.

That would make me somewhat cross with him honestly, and he wouldn't like that very much I suspect.
>>
>>36651512
No, for my remarkably naive friend Tiankong, who's family name I have come to suspect is "Feng", has the "handsome masculine braided-hair ass of a hero" department locked down at the moment.
Also, most of his fiancee's seem to have been arranged Hero Saotome's ass of a father.

Honestly, I'm not certain what many of Hero Saotome's fiancees even see in him.
>>
>>36651569
No.
I met him once though.
>>
>>36651852

>>
>>36651588
This may interest you, but we have a large number of Judaists in the Empire, especially in Henan, and have had them for some time.

>>
>>36651852
Wait, how old are you then?
What's the cutoff age for entering into this tournament?
>>
>>36651852
Using at least a full sentence how would you describe your meeting?

Tales involving the Wulin are rife with fallen monks who've lost their way in some way shape or form. Of the various sects are there any notably dangerous wayward monks roaming the land? If so would you name a few?
>>
>>36651907
I wasn't clear as to which time period we were in. It's never clear in wuxia, I didn't know if it had become established yet.
>>
>>36651883
Sort of. Not so much physically.
Also his eyes are the wrong color.
>>
>>36651919
Twenty-five, almsgiver.
The cutoff age is also twenty-five, which is another reason I didn't join, aside from a general lack of interest.
>>
>>36651943
Is he the sort of guy who would deliberately fake his own kidnapping in order to set up his pupil's final lessons?
>>
How would you personally rank the 10 Heroes in combat?
>>
>>36651963
So you met him after he withdrew from public life? Did you know sky's mother?
>>
>>36651922
I am five years old and I have to pee.

See why I don't tell this story very often?
>>
>>36651852
How? You were born around the same time Renshu disappeared. Did he leave the mountain at some point and Sky doesn't remember it?
>>
>>36651933
We are in a highly fictionalized version of the Ming Dynasty, just as the core LotW book is a highly fictionalized version of the Jin Dynasty.

There are in fact Judaists in my home province of Henan, where the Shaolin Sect is.
>>
Most Admirable Brother Genshu.

What are your thoughts on the dreaded Japanese?
>>
Brother Genshu, I come with two questions and one shall determine my alms.

First; are monks forbidden from all meat, or is it permissible to consume fish?

Second; it is said that he who carries a sword is more ready to use it. How then does practicing kung fu reconcile itself with pacifism? Further, in any battle, does one not desire to claim victory, for any reason? I thought desire was contradictory to enlightenment?

Or am I perhaps showing my ignorance?

Oh dear, it would seem that was rather more than two questions.
>>
>>36651965
Not sure.
I didn't really meet him that long, and he didn't speak to me at all.
>>
>>36651476
>>36651476
Everything I can find seems to be down... How frustrating. And D-Addicts is apparently down as well, which cuts off my access to literally everything Jiang Hu subbed.

Any tips on the other bit of that question, as regards character creation?
>>
>>36651974
As I've told Hero Sky, strength is a relative question, and truth be told I'm not familiar with them all personally.
>>
>>36651181
genshu
you told sky to ask Ao but not Zhu'er
are you trying to play matchmaker?
>>
>>36651987
"Withdrawn from public life" is notably not the same as "on a mountain".

And no, he was alone when I met him.
That doesn't necessarily mean he wasn't married, or that he didn't have a child somewhere though.
>>
>>36651995
Renshu vanished twenty-five years ago, which gives me time to be born and meet him.
Granted I was very young at the time.

I doubt Sky wouldn't have noticed his father having left the mountain, but it's also possible he was not always on the mountain himself.

Memory is not a precise thing, even for one as bright as he is.
>>
>>36652031
Never met any.

They have their own Chen Buddhists though, so they can't be all bad.
>>
Brother Genshu I have some questions about Heroes not living with your era (unless of course they have a proxy which would be totally unsurprising with one example as he's notorious for being included or referenced in just about everything).

If Bruce Lee Jun-Fan were to make an appearance in Wulin Hero how would he be represented? Would he have a high ranking in External Arts with no discernible Internal Arts or would he use Qi the same as any other Xia?

The other is what rankings would Li Shihoon and Nine Arts Dragon from the Breaker hold in the E,F,D,C,B,A etc system? Any other notable Heroes that wouldn't likely be present in the quest who you could give a ball park estimate on using that system?
>>

I come bearing gifts of coconut-ginger rice, I was unsure of bringing my chili shrimp. But I got tired of waiting for your brothers and sisters, you all dont visit us very often in the south.
We miss the culture exchange as well as martial exchange . And we apologize for what Nguyen did to you last time, he was promptly beaten for hitting on and striking your nuns.

Outside of Hero Sky, out of the participants of the tournament, who are you most fond of when it comes to dispensing some monk wisdom?
And who is the hardest one for you to talk with?
>>
>>36652291
Check out Wulin Hero Quest to see the exploits of Hero Sky and his meeting and verbal sparing with Brother Genshu. I personally find it a very enjoyable experience.
>>
>>36652051
>First; are monks forbidden from all meat, or is it permissible to consume fish?

Fish is usually okay. We can't eat meat because anything with four limbs is reincarnated from someone.
....not sure how that words vis-a-vis snakes.

>Second; it is said that he who carries a sword is more ready to use it. How then does practicing kung fu reconcile itself with pacifism? Further, in any battle, does one not desire to claim victory, for any reason? I thought desire was contradictory to enlightenment?

He who said that had a biased opinion, obviously.
>>
>>36652131
No, just trying to save himself from making a mistake before he's ready to deal with the consequences.
>>
>>36652291
Not Genshu, obviously, but you might want to try Legends of the Wulin. It's a damn good run of Wuxia fun.

But Genshu as he's presented here is from a quest thread. It's up almost every day and is by far the best quest thread I've seen on /tg/.

>>36652366

Good night!
>>
>>36652264
>If Bruce Lee Jun-Fan were to make an appearance in Wulin Hero how would he be represented?

With lots of "WATAAAH!" obviously.
His focus would be high ranking External Arts and simplistic Internal Arts akin to Qiu Qiang's.

>The other is what rankings would Li Shihoon and Nine Arts Dragon from the Breaker hold in the E,F,D,C,B,A etc system? Any other notable Heroes that wouldn't likely be present in the quest who you could give a ball park estimate on using that system?

Not really; it's not an exact system, so using other warriors from other times is not a very good measurement.
I will say Storm Dragon Feng Renshu is the most powerful xia in wuxia fiction ever, by a fair margin.
>>
>>36652480
That's, uh, quite a claim when people like Dugu exist.
>>
>>36652480
You including Dugu Qibadibs in that assessment or does he not fall under Wuxia fiction?
>>
>>36652456
>>36652334

I wish I could find a group to play, but sadly my lot in life means that it would cut into my actual training time. And thus I just lurk here for story time.

Shrimp's okay, for future reference.
And I'm sorry we don't get down south much; Henan's kinda far from your home.

>Asp here, just visiting, is this an actual game one can play?

For tabletop, try Legends of the Wulin, it's great fun and has many medical benefits.

For the tales of my good friend Hero Sky, try the Wulin Hero Quest archive, and you are fully encouraged in joining the threads proper when they begin or occur.

>>
>>36652323

Xiao Jian. He needs it.

This is actually sub-genre of wuxia called xiaoxia, which often emphasis mythical deities, animals, and magic more then the human drama of wuxia, and frequently takes place in earlier time periods as well.

You CAN include mythical creatures in wuxia, but place emphasis on how rare and fantastic they are, because they tend to be so.

Does anything like the Big Dipper formation used in Legend of the Condor Heroes exist in your sect or any of the sects that have been introduced in the Quest so far?

He could use a sense of humor, yes.

Indeed almsgiver!
My own Shaolin Sect has three; Great Arhat Formation, Vajra Evil Subduing Ring, and Arhat Sword Formation.

>What is your stance on Xia interfering with the secular world due to corruption?

Difficult question. Let's just say, I don't frown upon it personally, but it's also not something I'd do. I mean, it gets my whole Sect killed and my temple burned down a couple of times!

...why does everyone always burn our temple?

>For example if Hero Sky had set off to 'correct' the misdeeds of that offical whose negligence had caused suffering in the village he came ashore on.
For example if Hero Sky had set off to 'correct' the misdeeds of that offical whose negligence had caused suffering in the village he came ashore on.

I'd say he's a bit impetuous, since given his personality he'd likely rush in and kill the guy before fully understanding what was going on, but otherwise it's a Chivalrous deed.

I don't like killing though.
>>
>>36653004
>...why does everyone always burn our temple?
its just so deliciously flammable
>>
>>36652935
>Brother Genshu what are your opinions on Exalted and its representation of esoteric martial arts?

Exalted is a fine game, though perhaps a little...clunky at times.

I believe it functions better as a superpowered mythic warrior game with anime and Moorcock influences however, rather then a wuxia system, as Exalted subverts one of the most important rules of the genre; anyone, absolutely ANYONE can be a xia, and there are seemingly no limits to the power they can obtain, while in Exalted the highest levels of power can only be reached by Exalted.

>Oh did you check on Qiang after that match?

I did, but he didn't want my aid. He's rather proud, as you might have noticed.

>Could you give us the theory behind how he kept forcing his body to stand after taking blows like that?

It's rather boringly simple honestly; using qi one can augment the bodies functions and increase the power of their blows and such.
Iron Palm Sect's Internal Arts involve taking this a step further, using qi to reinforce the body's basic structure (muscles, tendons, bones, etc) for increased strength and durability.
Furthermore they have the ability to give themselves incredible tolerance to pain and injury; even my own ability to absorb punishment and simply ignore harm to my physical form is not so great as Iron Palm Sect's internal arts is.

When he straightened his spine out, did he repair it, or simply force it back into place and leave the worry of healing it for after he was bed ridden? I ask because it looked like it was at least fractured if not broken from that impact as opposed to it just being tough enough to withstand it.
>>
>>36653935

>>
>>36653963

>>
>>36654039

I suspect his Internal arts reinforced his bones and spine to prevent them from fracturing at Sky's blow, while probably giving him a mild concussion at the same time.

His Jade Tiger Skills simply help him ignore the pain and have his injuries not affect him.

He'll likely be bedridden even longer then Sky will even with medical attention, but perhaps not; obviously Qiang's durability and will to live is incredible, even for a xia.

>His will to fight too. Guy was smiling like a maniac until Sky went all out.

I suspect Hero Qiang has something of a masochistic streak, not to mention a general enjoyment of combat.

>If it was you do you think Sky's approach was the correct one or should he have been more aggressive and used his lightning without rest?

I am personally unfamiliar with his (unusually large for his age) energy reserves, but his lightning attacks seemed to be the only things that had any significant affect; they disrupted his ability to employ his internal arts and ignore the injuries the attacks caused.

Later when Sky did his glowing thing, he simply caused too many injuries for Qiang to compensate for.

>Or would a defensive and conservative strategy been the wiser choice?

Possibly, but it would be riskier; Sky's body is powerful, but Qiang's style is so much more brutally efficient that any injuries Sky received would've been far worse, especially considering Qiang's injuries wouldn't really be hampering his actual performance and Sky's would.

Sky did the best he could with the information he had available to him however; even I didn't realize how difficult it would be to keep Qiang down, nor did I fully understand just how great his tolerance for pain was.

Of the styles I know, you mean I assume.

My favorite Foundational Styles are Arhat Fist and Tiger-Subduing Palm, my favorite Fist Style is Great Vajra Fist, my favorite Palm Style is Prajna Palm, and my favorite Weapon Style is Evil-Subding Staff.

My absolute favorite of all is a secret however, I'm afraid.

I'm sure at some point Hero Sky will get into enough trouble to force me to use it; he seems completely unable to stay out of it.

If the Heavens will it, tomorrow.

If the Heavens don't will it, probably still tomorrow.

If Sky's main arts are at C+, what letter would you rate your own main arts as?
>>
>>36655663

It's rather difficult to estimate oneself in a neutral fashion and be accurate, so I won't even make such an attempt.

I am willing to reveal that I'm fairly certain I am considerably stronger then the rest of the Top Ten Young Hero hopefuls.

To elaborate; while given certain conditions or circumstances it is conceivable that any of them could be any other member of their group, it would take at least two of them to match me in a fight, and even then they would be struggling somewhat. Three would be a closer match.

How old are you? And what is the secret of your supremacy of your peers?
>>
>>36655849

I am as stated earlier on this thread, I am twenty-five years of age this year, and thus only barely allowed to participate in the Young Heroes Tournament as it is.

And there's no special secret; I work hard, study well, have access to excellent teachers, as well as the impressive depths of kungfu knowledge known by the Shaolin Sect, in addition to having a gift for kungfu in general.

Sometimes the answer to a spectacular question is a pretty boring one!
>>
>>36655941
I think he meant the Shaolin in general
>>
>>36655941
I find that true competence has its roots in the 'boring' fundementals. I personally know a guy that's unnervingly intelligent and capable of some impressive feats of deduction, and when he explains his logic and methods it's very easy to follow and understand.

Doesn't stop him from doing better than most everyone else though.
>>
>>36655965

That's a harder question to answer.

Frankly I personally think it's just that we've been around that much longer then everyone else and in theory we spent most of our time up in the Temple meditating, praying, and doing martial arts, so over time our Sect's knowledge and refinement has grown considerably.

Our founder was Bodhidarma during the Ten Kingdoms and Five Dynasties Era, and he is supposed to have created or developed most, if not all of our 72 skills.

My friend Hero Sky seems to be self-evident of this as well; his internal arts are amazing, yes, but mostly he spent much of his life simply training in the Min Mountains to be a better fighter, and so he is one.

Even his logical deduction abilities are straightforward; he simply listens to what people say and remembers things said to him.

It's possible Sky would make an excellent detective, if he knew anything about anything other then martial arts and living on mountains.
>>
>>36656131
Well, perhaps we ought to find him a partner or mentor who is a detective, then. Certainly, I agree that his deductive abilities are excellent. He's catching up with the outside world extremely fast for somebody working up from first principles. Not to mention that good detectives are always in demand for seeing justice done, and he's got personal reasons to snoop around too.

I find something most very intelligent people have in common is that they ask questions rather then assume they already know something.

Sky seems to ask a great MANY of them.

Not of me, but admittedly I'd probably answer them in an annoying and probably unhelpfully vague fashion.

I'm charming that way.

The Princess mentioned something about the "Liquid Sword", was that related to this?

You should probably not indulge in that willful obtuseness quite as often. You had one poor soul convinced you were a villain planning revenge on Sky for something Storm Dragon did in the past due to how you danced around giving him direct information.

Just saying, if you're a villain it's sloppy work, if you're an upstanding monk you should be more more mindful of your actions.

>implying they won't strip a monk of his prayer beads if he gives a straight answer.
>>
>>36656445
I wasn't there for that so I could tell you.
However, given the most estmable Sage's tendency to reference MANY wuxia works, I think the name at least might be intentional.

Also, there is a Wu-Tang Clan album of the same name, which is itself likely a reference to that film.

>>36656450
There's two ways to learn a lesson.

The first is that someone else teaches you in detail about the lesson you need to learn.
The second is that you learn it for yourself, either through personal experience and discovery or simply making a mistake.

I find the former to be a much more effective teaching method then the latter, as will said poor soul when he discovers the truth of his assumptions.

And to be perfectly honest, the main reason I told him to ask Young Lady Ao is because I'm not as familiar with the details as she is; her father was actually at the event in question, so could give a more detailed account. I was aware of this because Dragon King Ao Guang's exploits are well-known.

>>36656630
so...you agree that you should give more detail with explanations moving forward?
