>Previously, on Mage: the Awakening Quest!

You barely had time to let the impending apocalypse attempt sink in before seven cloaked Mages barged into the Library, threatening to kill Jemma to send the Acamoth possessing Sarah back to the Abyss. You were able to deduce and defuse the situation, as you figured out that it has tried to kill Jemma before, meaning that it must have found out a way to keep itself in the Fallen World even if she was killed. The seven people are revealed to be members of the Guardians of the Veil, the 'Mage assassins' organization of the Mage world. One of them you are even familiar with: Diana, the powersmith who had agreed to help build the anti-black hole device to help combat Sarah's magic.

The Guardians identified one major flaw in your plan: it all hinges on you (Michael) to not die before the banishment attempt. They asked to meet with any of the remaining Thyrsus Mages left in the city, with Elizabeth admitting that most are dead or missing, the only ones unaccounted for being Garen and a 'sex Mage.' While the 'sex Mage' agreed to come in, Garen was unable to be reached. Fearing for his safety, all 12 of you rolled out to his townhouse. Failing to find him there, you scry for his location: the Gold Coast Hotel in the city, a rather expensive and private Sleeper hotel where some of Garen's clientelle live in. Tali and her ally depart, going to inform Tobi of the Acamoth's plans and to secure more aid from the werewolves.

> (cont.)
>>
Reaching the hotel as a strong snow storm begins to roll in, you split into two teams of 5, one looking for Garen on the ground floor bar, the other up in his clientelle's room. Finding the room to be gutted and Garen missing, the team on the ground floor (of which Michael is a part of) begin to keep an eye out for him or the Acamoth. Michael spots her first, and pulls the team out of sight before it spots them. A bellhop is trailing behind her, a rather large, heavy suitcase on a dolly. She wheels it out to a waiting limousine outside, and loads the suitcase into the trunk in the back.

> And now, back to the action!

"Do any of you know some sort of tracking spell," you whisper to the others, as Sarah makes some small talk to the bellhop, the driver of the limousine moving to open the door to the limo itself for her to enter. "Cause I don't think we can follow her in the van, and a cab won't fit all of us."

Glee raises her hand slightly, head nodding over to the barkeep. "I can, just give me a few seconds of no Sleeper eyes on me and I can cast one on the limo."

This is good. Seconding.
>>
>>36664689
Good idea. I just want to point out two things though:

1. Elizabeth (aka the Mystic) doesn't wear a ring (can easily be stolen and used for symptametic magic on her/you).

2. The other Guardians don't know you and the Mystic are married.

You still have a ring on, so you could use your ring, but it's a bit too big on her hand.
>>
>>36664855
>2. The other Guardians don't know you and the Mystic are married.
We can say it's an act though.

>You still have a ring on, so you could use your ring, but it's a bit too big on her hand.
So we tell her to make a fucking fuss about it and slap us, storming out.

>>
>>36664867
could she use life magic to make her fingers bigger ?
>>
How big are Gemma's fingers?
>>
>>36664867
Seconding telling them it's all an act. However she acts, they wouldn't know much about her character so they wouldn't know how to spot an "act" and a "genuine" reaction.

The ring being improperly sized would also help matters. If we don't know her much either, of course we wouldn't have a ring of the correct size and we sure as hell ain't gonna magic up one in front of all these sleepers.

And make sure the guy laying on the tracking spell knows some prime arcana so he can veil it from magic sight. A tracking bug is no good if they know it's there.
>>
"I got an idea," you say, slipping your ring off and grabbing Elizabeth's hand.

"Wait, wha-" She stumbles off the bar stool and trails behind you, as you pull her towards the center of the bar room, away from the windows. The barkeep's already keeping his eye on you, hand almost reaching for something undernearth it. You plop down on one knee, bringing your ring up to her left hand's ring finger.

"Honey, I know it's been a crazy year, for both you and I. And I'd been thinking about this for a while now..." You produce the ring and show it to her, the rather chunky brass thing greatly dwarfing your wife's thin fingers. "I know it's not the right size, but I just wanted something for you to have to show my commitment to you, towards the future I hope we can have together." By this time, everyone (other than Nova and Glee) has their eyes on you, as Elizabeth begins to blush red from embarassment. "Jessica Alisson Dawes, will you marry me?"

She blushes an even deeper shade of red, sliding the ring onto her finger. It barely even stays on, as she pulls you up off the ground. "Yes, I will." Hands begin clapping as the barkeep produces a bottle of champagne, popping it and pouring you both a glass. You lean in close and kiss her, wrapping your arms around her and holding her tight. It's much more public and formal than your actual proposal to her, as this is something neither of you love to do: make big, flashy entrances or exposures in public.

But it's the perfect distraction for the two to cast the tracking spell.

You both take a sip of the champagne the barkeep poured ("on the house," he says to you) as random bar patrons begin to congratulate you both on the engagement. The others join in, Jemma having taken several photographs of it, making it seem like the people with you are your closest friends. Jemma's a friend, but Nova and Glee certainly aren't.

And you aren't sure if having assassins as friends is a good thing or bad thing to try to achieve.
>>
It takes a good 15 minutes to finally leave the bar, where Gibson and his team are waiting in the hotel lobby. "What the hell was that for," he asks.

Elizabeth hands the ring back to you, dropping her cheerful demeanor. "We needed to provide a distraction for Nova and Glee to slip a tracking spell on the Acamoth's limo."

"And?" He looks expectantly at the two, who nod in agreement.

"It went on without a problem; masked it's presence too, so you'd have to be actively looking for a bug to find one." Glee motions for Mr. Sniffles to pull out his laptop, which he does. She keys in a bit of information, and reveals a map of the city with a green dot moving on it. "Voila."

"Great, let's go."

--------------

The weather outside begins to turn worse, as snow plow trucks begin to make their way out onto the streets, throwing down road salt and clearing the streets of the snow, as the winds begin to pick up in speed and the snow begins to fall at a heavier pace.

"I don't like this," Jemma says, looking outside the window and up to the sky.

"What? I think we've actually got a good shot of surprising it," Nova says, head bopping to an invisible tune.

"Something doesn't feel right... I don't know what though."

One thing I wanted to check. If I remember correctly, in Mage the Awakening, sleeper observation only matters if the magic is vulgar or if the covert magic causes disbelief in observers. Is this a deviation from the rules, or do I misremember?
>>
>>36665314

> Want to talk it out/think it through?
>>
>>36665474
Most Covert magic isn't normally seen, but I've been running it so that even certain Covert spells need to have some sort of way to hide it's magical effects (for example, most Sight powers turn your eyes a different color or give a glow to them).
>>
>>36665474
Also, unrelated to the current situation at all, but something someone relatively new to the game is confused about. Does sleeper observation cause paradox when seeing a spell that is already active but vulgar? Being the hulk after casting a powerful life spell for instance.

>>36665314
> Want to talk it out/think it through?
>>
>>36665574
Depends upon the spell itself. In your example given, yes, if you turned into the Hulk and starting smashing stuff, any Sleeper seeing you would invoke a Paradox upon you. However, say you turned into the Hulk, started smashing stuff, and right behind you are your buddies with a camera, them saying it's all makeup and costume props while you film an action movie.

They'd buy it and lessen any Paradox invoked upon you.
>>
>>36665574
It adds additional paradox die to the roll, a very bad thing. Though you can reduce or even eliminate it if you have provided a handy dandy logical explanation for that happening (e.g. putting "caution: repairs in progress" around a sight on a pier and then a part of it suddenly rotting out and making your enemy plummet into shark infested waters wouldn't trigger a paradox because hey, they said they were making repairs).
>>
>>36665766
Ah right, I thought you only invoked paradox on the casting. It didn't seem very clear to me on the original reading.
>>
"Well, let's go talk it out before we get to wherever the Acamoth is going. We know it's made a Heptagram, and that it's going to try and open a portal to the Abyss." You raise your fingers out, trying to identify facts you've established so far.

"It's been possessing this Mage for a long time now, gaining mastery over all the magics she could learn," Jemma says, specifically leaving out the fact that the Mage is her twin sister. Public fact number two.

"For the past few months, it's been hunting down and killing or doing something to the other Thyrsus Mages in the city," Elizabeth says, helping Diana fiddle with some device. Fact number three.

"It sees me as a threat, and tried to sweet-talk me over to it's side." You leave out the fact that the Tower you've signed under is not the same as the Thyrsus path. Public fact number four.

"And we are currently operating under the assumption that even if I am killed, it has found a way to stick around. Also, we believe it has kidnapped Garen and is taking him somewhere in the limo, which is why we are trailing her," Gibson says, looking back at you all.

"And we have a plan in place to exorcise the Acamoth and either kill it or send it back to the Abyss. So... What are we forgetting?"

Paradox happens when casting.
Vulgar spells always cause paradox, but Sleeper witnesses make it worse.
Covert spells that strain credulity become Improbable and invoke Paradox.

Sleepers that witness Improbable or Vulgar ongoing effects after they've been cast don't cause paradox, but they do cause Unraveling, which is basically them WTFing so hard reality dispels the effect. Each Sleeper that sees a spell worth Unraveling rolls Resolve+Composure every 10 minutes and as soon as there are more successes than the spells potency, it just unravels.

You mull the idea over for a while, trying to review everything that's happened the past few weeks. You're pretty sure that Sarah wants you to stop her/the Acamoth. You've got a plan in place that you know has some risks to it, but it's a good plan. And nothing else jumps out at you, like why would any Mage would work with an Acamoth...

Right?

"What if it's working with someone else," you say aloud. Everyone looks at you for a second, eyes giving an incredulant stare, then going wide. Immediately everyone else begins to cast spells, turning on various forms of Sight, and talking over each other in increasing degrees of volume. "Hey, HEY!" You bang on the side of the van's door, trying to get everyone's attention. "What is it!?"

"It's not working alone," Gibson says, tapping the side of your head with a glowing finger. "Look at the storm."

You peer outside and see tendrils of magic flowing up into the key, with you immediately identifying the glow of the magic as a strong Forces spell. And hidden amongst the clouds is a slow, magical hum of lines criss-crossing and growing in strength, pure Magic flowing through them. "What the hell..."

"It's a strong Forces spell, someone's literally brewing up a storm large enough to blanket the city," Jemma says, reviewing the map that Glee is using to track the limo. "But that's not the worst part."

"Oh? And what is?"

"She's already begun to cast the ritual," Elizabeth says. "We were wrong about her timeline; she doesn't need the Spiritual activity to cast the spell, she just needed enough power, and now that it has Garen, it must be using their souls to power the ritual." She scoots back, a quick circle being taped onto the floor of the van in the workspace as Diana begins to tinker ever faster. "We don't have a lot of time to stop it, and I'm trying to scry Garen's soul's location." She closes her eyes, her body beginning to give off an aura of magic.

> [1/2]

> [2/2]

"Then the limousine is what, a distraction?" You turn back to Gibson, who is the one driving the van.

"I'm about to find out." You look out in front of you and see that he has quickly closed the distance on the limo, and at the next red light he rams into the back of the limo, smashing into its bumper and damaging it quite a bit. The limo driver climbs out, mouthing various obscenities at Gibson. The Mage just simply steps out, producing a large handgun in one hand, as Diana tosses him some leather pouch. He flips it open to the driver, bringing the handgun to bear. "OPEN THE TRUNK, NOW!"

The driver quickly drops his angry demanour, not wanting to get shot by the cranky, angry old man. He ditifully does as he is asked, popping the trunk open. He glances in, swears loudly, then motions for the driver to open the back door. You climb out, looking into the trunk.

The suitcase isn't there.

"Shit," you murmur under your breath. You glance over and see the driver swing the door open, as Gibson peers inside. He motions for you to come over and look, and you do so.

The inside of the limo is empty.

You slam the door to the limo shut as hard as you can. You can just hear the Acamoth laughing at you. Gibson's already interrogating the driver, gun still levied at him. People around you are starting to get curious, some even pulling up to find out what's going on. You immediately wave them off, saying it's police business, trying to buy him time. He finally puts the gun away, tossing the driver a large roll of money, and pulls you back towards the van.

"She told him to just drive around the city for a few hours, just make sure that you are constantly going north, south, or east," he says, holstering the gun. "Which means that the lair is probably somewhere to the west."

"Or it's another ploy," you say, pulling out your phone. You finally got a chance to charge it the past couple days, and you begin to call Tali up. "We need the werewolves to start looking, now." You bring the phone to your ear, as the click of the line going live pops into it.

"Raguel, what-"

"She's started the ritual," you say to her, climbing back into the van. "We're trying to track her down."

"FUCK!" The sound of something smashing echoes past her mouth, as the scuffle noises of nails scrapping across the floor occur. "Tell me where she is, and we'll meet you there," her voice comes across much deeper now, as though she is struggling to use words that a vocal cord isn't designed to use. You look in at Elizabeth, her eyes glowing pure white, mouth murmuring silent words. "One second, and I'll give it to you." You've seen her use this before, using High Speech to strengthen her spell. It's a risk, as it increases the chance of a Paradox, but right now you've gotta take as many risks as you can.

"Lombard Park District," Elizabeth yells out. "Garen's soul is there, along with the Acamoth and at least a dozen other Thyrsus Mage souls!"

"I heard it," Tali says, her voice becoming even deeper. "See you there."

> [1/2]
>>
> {2/2]

"Good luck," you say, as the line clicks dead. Gibson climbs into the driver's seat once more, looking back at the rest of you.

"OK people, talk to me, what have we got!"

"The location of the Forces spell is coming up from the same park district, it must be the Acamoth or one of the Mages she has control over casting the spell. If we can disrupt it then the storm will dissipate, but that'll take several hours for it all to go away," Glee says, punching in coordinates to the park on the van's GPS. Gibson immeidately throws the vehicle into high gear, driving much faster and more recklessly than he should.

"I've called up the local PD, trying to get them to clear the roads leading into the district," Jemma says, a hand covering the mic of her phone. "I told them there's a potential bomb threat and we've got a crew coming to find and dispose of it, but that'll only buy us so much time free from Sleeper eyes." You forgot that Jemma was a CPD cop, which is probably the badge that Gibson flashed to the driver. How Diana pilfered the badge off Jemma is a question for another time.

"She's begun the ritual," Elizabeth says, eyes still glowing white. "By my estimates, we have 30 minutes to get there before she completes it."

"And with the weather and road traffic as is, it'll take us..." Mr. Snuffles is clicking away at his laptop, one hand doing calculations, the other pointing at the stop lights. As they get close, one pair switches to red, the one you are approaching clicking green. "An hour to get there, FUCK!" He pounds the door to the desk. The other four in the car shrug their shoulders, saying they have nothing.

"I can get there in 10 minutes," Jemma says, already hovering off the ground. "But I can only take two people with me."

"Can we make a portal there, or does anyone know teleportation magic?"

"I can do some Space magic," Mr. Snuffles says, clicking away at the laptop still. "But not enough to do a portal big enough to get all of us there."

"And the rest of us don't have any experience with Space magic," Nova says. "I can hover in the air with my Forces, but it looks like Gemini here's a bit further along the Path than I."

This just keeps getting better and better. "The Mystic and I will go," you say, grabbing onto Jemma's outstretched hand. Elizabeth does the same, and the three of you climb out of the van as Gibson pulls it down an alleyway, out of the eyes of watching Sleepers. "And not to say I told you so... But I told you so," you shoot back at the others as they look at Jemma.

"Wait!" Diana thrusts a suitcase into your hand. "Inside is the anti-black hole device. Just open the case up and it'll do the rest."

"Good luck," Gibson says, waving goodbye at you all, as the door slams shut, van kicking up snow as it drives out. Immediately Jemma takes flight, and you try hard to not yell in excitement as you quickly ascend to the sky.

"So, new plan," you yell out to Elizabeth and Jemma. "Liz, you'll be the one with the anti-hole device, provide me backup as best as you can. Jemma, you deal with the Forces Mage, try to stop his snowstorm spell."

"That leaves you tangling with the Acamoth," Liz says, her free hand glowing purple as a bubble of magic encircles you. Instantly the speed at which you were flying increases, as everything below you looks to be going much slower. "Will you be ok?"

You also need something of theirs, something with a strong connection. A few strands of their hair is stereotypical but effective. A wedding ring, a spouse, or something else they've had for years and spent a good amount of time with also works.

The real trouble is, once you've had a friend for a few months, they become sympathetic links too. Being a social butterfly can come back to bite you. Fortunately, with enough space magic you can temporarily sever these links, making any attempt to use such magic trigger a clash of wills.

"Sorry, but if I'm going to be going mano-e-mano vs. a Forces Mage, I need to see Magic itself, not spirits. I'll take the risk of Sarah jumping me from behind."

You nod, looking away from her as you turn your sight on. As you do, the glimmer of something in the distance catches your eye. It's rather bright, like a bolt of -

Instantly Jemma whips around, hand crackling with lightning as she grabs a bolt of lightning a few inches from your face. The bolt strikes her, but instead of it harming her, she looks like she's bending the lightning, using her body as a grounding conduit and redirecting it back to the source. "Nice try, bitch!" She rushes towards where the glimmer of light came from, a tree trunk exploding as a shadowy figure leaps away from the shrapnel of the wood. "Go, I got this!"

Nodding in agreement, you and Elizabeth venture deeper into the park, handing Elizabeth the suitcase. You begin looking for any signs of Sarah or her ritual circle to activate the Heptagram.

Also, for those unaware, we have 2 enchanted brass knuckles equipped (+1 die to Forces Magic), an enchanted chain shirt (+1 defense vs. non-magical, non-firearms attacks), and an enchanted steel dagger (+1 die to Spirit magic). The above spells are cast WITHOUT the use of these items.

Finally, we can blow a Willpoint to get a +3 die roll to any spell you cast, but this can only be done once a 'scene' (basically until the next break in action/storytelling occurs).

is there any reason not to use the enchanted dagger of +spirit magic whenever we cast a spirit spell?

You are located basically where the light green dot is at the center of the heptagram circle, so no, there are spirits in the area, although most are fleeing as fast as they can.

You pull the steel dagger out from your boot, channeling Spirit magic through it. You reach out with your will, compelling any spirits in the area to aid you in your search for Sarah's ritual circle. Several rather frightened ones begin to bob up around you, whispering emotions and directions in your ear.

"<Thank you,>" you murmur back. "<Now get out of here.>" No need to tell them twice, any spirit able to move is running the fuck away from here at breakneck speeds. Well, at speeds that would break a person's neck if they had one. You silently motion to Elizabeth, having her follow after you. You quickly move through the underbrush, slipping past the trees and into a clearing near the park grounds, as snow begins to fall even harder on the ground. Behind you the sounds of shattering wood and cracks of lightning echo behind you, as yells of pain, anger and excitement follow after them.

"Look," Elizabeth murmurs, pointing to a glowing circle in the distance. There is an intricate circle made out of stones and bundled heaps of bodies, glowing stones placed at specific points in the circle, on top of the bundles of bodies. "That must be it."

"So where is she..." You look around in the Shadow World, looking for her recognizable taint. Compared to what you've seen of her tainted lands, this looks like a veritable spiritual paradise. Nothing looks out of place, and the circle itself looks rather inviting.

"Get ready for anything, Mystic," you say to her, as you slowly approach the circle. The bodies themselves seem alive, as their chests go up and down, and all of them varying in health, some rather gaunt and thin, others rather plump and lively looking.

"The lights are on, but nobody's home," she says behind you. "I'm guessing those gems are housing their souls, and she's using their souls to power the ritual she's using to open the portal."

You inspect the circle, and notice that the circle itself is powered up, but it's waiting for one final thing to fully complete the ritual. It's like the engine is primed to start, but it's missing one final spark. And it has to be a particularly strong one at that. Your eyes grow wide as realization dawns on you.

You're the last spark needed.

You instantly step away from the circle right as black tentacles whip out of the circle, latching onto your wrists.

"<ABOUT TIME, MAGE,>" the Acamoth grins out, bubbling up out of the circle. "<I'VE BEEN EXPECTING YOU.>"

"<Sorry baby, too kinky for me,>" you say, cutting the tentacle with your knife in one quick swipe, backing away as it falls off you and disintegrates.

"<WHY FIGHT AGAINST ME, MAGE? YOU CANNOT STOP ENTROPY. SOONER OR LATER, EVERYTHING ENDS.>" she lashes out at you with more tentacles, and you quickly leap away from her attack. "<EMBRACE THE DARKNESS. LET IT WARM YOU LIKE A COMFORTING BLANKET.>"

oh right, this is only the first step, isn't it?
ooops

well we can spare the mana, at least
>>
>>36672346
For those unaware, the original plan was to lock it in an exorcism (which is basically a dual of wills) with the werewolf shamans providing backup, and when you thought you could banish it, you'd blow the wad then.

>Living bodies, nearby gems house their souls
hey, I just realized, we can win this by returning the souls from the gems to the bodies. This has the added benefit of giving us instant reinforcements
>>
>>36672137
>YOU CANNOT STOP ENTROPY. SOONER OR LATER, EVERYTHING ENDS

Pft. Everything changes, that the Acamoth sees only endings is a result of it's nature. Ask a Moros, Death is just the transition from Material existance towards Supernal, a journey that was once part of a circle.

Of course, with The Abyss in place, that journey is significantly more harrowing, but the fact that Awakenings still take place is proof enough that souls can still make the circuit.
