You are Reinhold, master swordsman and victor of the Royal Swordsmanship Tournament. The King was so impressed with your skill, he personally requested that you be transferred out of the army and into the Royal Guard! Not bad for an orphan who was raised in a brothel in a poor fishing village.

The only issue at this point is your assignment... you've been charged to be the personal guard of the King's only daughter Marianne. While she is the vision of loveliness that you'd expect from a Princess, her personality is... well... she seems to have some issues.

It took no small amount of effort, but you actually managed to kill one of the Leviathans!

...and it seems that you made a fan in the process.

>Congratulations, Reinhold is now a fearsome DIRE WOLF!
>Much larger than their the other types of wolf, the Dire Wolf's size also means that they are also that much more dangerous.
>The Princess considers you to be her dear friend!
>But while dire wolves are massive, they still don't -quite- stand on the same level as people.

>"C'mon," you sigh. "I'm sure your parents are worried about you so you'd better et going."
>"I don't have parents," she shakes her head. "And you're the only one who's worried about me so I'm gonna stick with you!"

Of COURSE she'd have to be an orphan.

"Well then could you tell me where you live, at least?" you ask. "I'd be willing to take you there before I go."

Though Cateno had no shortage of orphans when you were little, more than a few of them still had their own houses that were left to them by their parents before they died. If this girl's the same way, at least you'd be able to have somewhere to leave her...

"I live over there," the girl says, pointing at what's left of a nearby building.

You remember that it used to be a restaurant that you and Citrine would go to every once in a while... and of course one of the few places with any actual happy memories for you in this hellhole would get destroyed.

"So your parents ran that place?" you ask.
"Uh-uh," she shakes her head. "I didn't live inside there, I had a box out front. That's where I used to stay before the monsters came and broke everything and ate everybody."

She lived in a...

"The lady who owned the restaurant would give me the extra food that they had when it was about to spoil," the girl says. "Sometimes. But she got ate up by the monster that was trying to kill me."
"...damn," you say, shaking your head. "I'm sorry that you had to see that."
"It was really scary," she replies, "but now you're here and you saved me too!"

Yeah, but she's not going to STAY safe if she sticks to you like she has been. It you're going to be any help to Arnaud, you're going to have to get her somewhere safe that she'll actually STAY PUT.

Adoption isn't a serious suggestion, we lack both the time and any chance of Luciana's consent. Getting her to wait by the wyvern is just a good way of keeping her safe and out of the way of saving others/killing bastard fish-dragons. Getting her out of Cateno to a proper orphanage is just being a decent human being, given how little extra time and effort it would take.
>>
>>36673449
better get flea shampoo as well
>>
>>36673526
But it takes absolutely no effort to do nothing.
>>
>>36673526
Instead of taking her to a proper orphanage it seems more likely that Arnaud will agree to take her in as a maid-apprentice at the castle.

Which is nice, because then we can see her regularly, maybe start teaching her swordsmanship.
>>
>>36673561
Is that supposed to mean something? Every action requires some effort, whether it's worthwhile boils down to how much good comes from how much effort. In this case, saving a life in exchange for giving some directions and a little cover (which we're here to do anyway as part of saving the town) and then asking Arnaud to get her set up in a decent orphanage on the wyvern ride back.

>>
>>36673667
Let's be honest: this is pseudo-anime fantasy land, so she's all but guaranteed to be a lovely kid under a coarse exterior.

>>36673649
We really don't have the time to teach, but we could probably set her up with someone who does if she's actually interested in starting a tradition of hardcore noblebright swordie orphans from Cateno.

Also we could engender maximum overjealousy if we convince Arnaud rather than ourselves to give her a half hour of pointers on drills to get her started. That would probably earn the jealousy of any soldier in the castle.

With the new fight system Elena will win simply because she can read the prompts.

The look on the little girl's face when you say that is one of pure betrayal.

There are pixies on the western continent, insect monsters on the southern one, probably mermaids too.

There are also fairies, which are native to the eastern continent.

They live symbiotically with flowering plants, giving them increased hardiness in exchange for their use of the plant's photosynthesis and piggybacking their offspring on the seeds of said plants. One plant can only bond with one fairy ever, so they'll often fight over the prettiest flowers because that's what they like.

Fairies that are bonded to normal plants are universally female, and only grow to the size of a small doll. But in the event of a bonding with a tree, the fairy can end up growing to the size of a human, at which time they're then called dryads.

The only time you'd see a male of the species is in the event that they were born from the seed of a plant that actually differs from male/female. In such a situation, they're capable of sexual reproduction with female fairies but it's generally not done.

Stopping a few yards away from the Wyvern, you let the little girl down onto the grass.

"Stay right here, okay?" you say, patting her on the shoulder. "I'll be back when I'm done fighting those monsters."
"B... but..." she clings to your pant leg as she eases away from the lesser dragon.
"That's a good one, it won't hurt you," you sigh. "And I -promise- to come back to get you, so be a good girl and stay here, okay?"

Reluctantly, she lets go of your clothing.

"But..."
"Look," you point at the resting Wyvern. "That thing's my ride home. And you're right here by it, right?"
"Uh-huh," she nods.
"So if -I- want to get home then I have to come back here, right?"
"I guess..."
"So you understand that I'm not trying to ditch you," you sigh. "Good."

As you prepare to race into Cateno for a second time, you hear the little girl mumbling something under her breath.

"Hm?" you glance back. "You say something?"
"...can I go home with you?" she asks. "I don't wanna hafta find a new box..."

It's like a suckerpunch right into your SOUL.

>>
>>36675420
Not really, otherwise he'd have known about it, she'd have to be 5 or 4
>>
>>36675420
No because it is only 4-5 years since he left the brothel. He would have seen Spinelle being pregnant if the kid is hers.
>>
>>36675442
100%.
>>
>>36675420
Generally speaking eight year olds can't father children.
Plus she was a whore so determining the father of her kid would be near impossible.
>>
>>36675420
Reinhold is 17, and Spinelle raped him during a period spanning from him being 7 to 12, afterwards he fled Cateno and joined the army. It's possible that he got a 4-5 years old kid but that's highly improbable, joking aside.

Obviously he would have noticed if Spinelle was pregnant back when he lived with her. And he was probably not fertile for most of the thing.

God I feel dirty talking about this.

You wasted too much time with Carina. Not that you regret saving her at all, but you came out her to do more than kill a single Leviathan and save a single girl. That's right, you're here to kill a very specific LEviathan.

...and to save lots of people. Of course.

Continuing to pick up speed as you reenter the city limits, your ears are assaulted by a cacophony of noise. In the distance by the river, you hear more thunder... and elsewhere you hear the sound of crashing buildings and then there's also the sudden screams of the villagers...

The thunder is more likely than not Arnaud, and he definitely doesn't need your help. And the sound of the crashing buildings... though that's probably another Leviathan wrecking the town, the lack of screams coming from that direction suggests that everyone's already been evacuated from over there.

That or they're all dead.

That leaves the aver-growing sound of the screaming villagers... they're the ones who you're here to protect, and you're going to save them all.

There's no sense in wasting time trying to get information from these people, you're just as likely to get trampled by them as find out anything of worth. Instead, you duck into an alley, then leap from wall to cramped wall until you make it to the rooftop.

As you continue your trek from an elevated position, you can't help but glance down at the fleeing villagers. Though you made a special point to avoid that place on the way here, there's no doubt in you mind as to what lies in the direction that they're running.

"Raising my sword before the coming shade," you chant as you draw back your sword, "its glint is the final glimmer of light before twilight's wake!"

Swinging your sword as hard as you can, you launch a wave of light from your lengthened blade at the apex of your swing. Your attack flies true, crashing into the Leviathan just as it's about to devour its helpless victim.

Though it doesn't seem as if your attack was able to pierce its armored hide, the feeling of utter shock that anything in this town would dare to attempt to harm it is enough to draw its attention away from the woman who it had cornered and towards you.

"That's right!" you shout as the monster searches for what could have hit it. "I'm right here!"

While you taunt the sea serpent, the woman who you prevented it from eating slowly rises to her feet and ducks into an alley a few buildings away. Though she's pretty far, you're pretty sure that you recognize her as Emeraude, one of the girls from the brothel.

But there's no time for reminiscing, as this gigantic sea serpent is staring you down with a single yellow eye...

"So it was YOU," you growl as your lips curl into a mad grin. "So I was right to come here after all..."

Try to use the missing eye against it, when we're moving try to keep in its blind spot.

Use Fragment Blader and Twilight's Wake for the ultimate SWORD THROW ATTACK at its remaining eye. Throwing counts as swinging, right? And overall try to take out the other eye.

When we charge in try to use Tailwind and Metal Body together. Use Dead Line Fault when we're close to fuck up the scales.

For a moment, you feel yourself overwhelmed by a feeling of sheer hatred that's stronger than you've felt since you were maybe nine years old. Or were you ten back then...

You take a deep breath and ready your sword, doing your best to calm yourself down before you give in to the urge to leap off this building and just wail on this evil thing until it's dead. Since that would be suicide, of course.

It's a shame that you're facing a giant monster right now, you really wish that you could just let go and lose yourself in the hatred.

Reposting the battle rules for the benefir of those who weren't here last time.

Basically, it's a rock-paper-scissors thing. There are three types of attacks:

>Strike
>Strikes are fast, precision based attacks. Any attack which seems like it may rely on overwhelming speed or pinpoint accuracy is likely a Strike. As a general rule of thumb, most mundane small arms fire is considered a Strike. Strikes defeat Crashes, but are defeated by Guards.

>Crash
>A Crash is a highly telegraphed, but extremely powerful blow. Any attack which seems to rely mostly on the brute strength or overwhelming force is likely a Crash. As a general rule of thumb, most thrown objects, like trees or boulders, are considered Crashes. Crashes defeat Guards, but are defeated by Strikes.

>Guard
>A Guard is a defensive posture or evasive stance which is used to set up a counter-blow. Any attack which appears as if it could be a feint, focuses on counterattacks, or which seems to be a stalling tactic is likely to be a Guard. Guards defeat Strikes, but are defeated by Crashes.

Every time you get a hit in, you gain a point of Advantage. The first to get three points, be it you or the opponent, is the winner.

Throwing its entire body into the attack, the sea serpent lunges towards you with its mouth wide open. You expected this, however, and leap out of range of the beast's mouth just before it chomps down right where you had been standing.

And then it keeps on going, its head plowing through the roof of the building and completely throwing off your balance.

As you leap onto the roof of the adjacent house, you curse the fact that you just missed the perfect opportunity to attack...

...or maybe not.

"Come to my aid, oh beast of steel!" you shout, holding your hand in the air as Script begins to dance around it. "Place within my hand the sword of kings, and let us rend asunder all which stands before us! FRAGMENT BLADER!"

A simple sword materializes in your hand, and then you take aim...

You cheer as the blade pierces into the Leviathan's head...

...but then you realize that you missed hitting the eye itself by mere inches, your sword is instead buried inside the soft flesh that borders it.

The buildings around you crumble as the monster flails its tail in a blind rage, crashing through them as if they were made of paper. Fortunately, you see Emeraude run further off into the distance just as you yourself jump down from the roof of the last building within the Leviathan's reach. The last thing you need right now is a distraction, you're really glad that you had Carina wait out by the Wyvern.

Having just cleared the area of any obstacles to itself, the Leviathan coils up into what seems like a defensive stance, its single eye glaring from the center of a massive spiral.

...but then you notice its tail beginning to unfurl from the coil, picking up speed as it does so... you're really unsure what this means, but from the trajectory of the monster's rail, you can tell that it's going to smash right into you if you don't move RIGHT NOW.

Frantically, you chant the incantation for Stone Body, getting it off just as the Leviathan's tail crashes into you. Your quick actions save you from being hurt yourself, but you're sent flying backwards, skidding along the cobblestone street and tumbling over yourself for what seems like forever until you finally land flat on your back.

Not having budged from its original position, the Leviathan lets out a triumphant roar as you force yourself upright.

Steel... what?

Oh yeah, you still have that spell active. Releasing it as you steady your feet, you shake your head.

"Nope, I'm no Steel Knight," you say with a bitter smile.

Panicked by the sudden loss of its sense of sight, the Leviathan wildly flails about in an attempt to kill everything around it. Fortunately for you, you were expecting such a reaction and so you made a hasty retreat away from its area of reach.

Seeing this worthless piece of trash that caused Citrine so much pain writhing in agony is truly satisfying... you simply stand back and gloat while the monster throws its tantrum, but eventually it calms back down and lowers its head to the ground.

<attack?>

>[1/2]
>>
>>36677793
>[2/2]

Curious, you pick up a small piece of rubble and toss it in the monster's general direction.

SLAM

As another test, you toss a second rock outside the Leviathan's range of attack.

No response.

And with that knowledge, you pick up a handful of rocks and back away from your opponent. At first you simply do a brisk backwards-walk, but after a while you turn around and sprint away a fair distance.

As you pass by her, Emeraude flashes you a look of total confusion.

well, whatever we do needs to be fast enough to bypass reflexive lashes from it, or else we need to be silent after we get close to it.

So, airborne/jumping seems like a good base to build on.

>Emeraude flashes you a look of total confusion
As I you, Emeraude. What are you still doing here? This the same problem we just had with... Goddammit... Listen, follow these directions, you'll find a wyvern in the woods, there should be a little girl there called Carina. She's nice, stay away from her...
>>
Boosted jump followed by inertia cheating transformation into a human wrecking ball with an armor piercing sword incoming?
>>
>>36677871

Seven... eight... nine...

Once you're the equivalent of the length of ten houses or so away from the Leviathan, you take a deep breath to steel your nerves and then start to run back towards it while chanting a spell.

"I shed this frail husk..."

You see a sharp decrease in your running speed once you cast Stone Body, but the second half of this combination should more than take care of that. You rattle off the incantation for Tailwind as fast as you can, and its invocation causes a sharp increase in your speed.

And momentum.

You really wish that Citrine could see this...

>>
>>36677903

Careful of the monster's tactics, you toss out your volley of rocks long before you're within range of its tail. And as expected, the stupid thing slams down its tail onto where they land, far away from where you're approaching.

You sheath your sword as you see the monster frantically pull its tail back in the air as it senses your footsteps, but it's too late. You zoom straight for its head, and more specifically the Fragment Blader sword that's still embedded in its face. Once you're within range, you grab onto the hilt of the sword and force it along with you as you run.

First you hear a crunching sound as the sword, and then -you-, pierce right through its skull.

And then screams of agony that resonate throughout your entire body.

The monster's skull offers little resistance to your full-body projectile, and you don't stop running until you've broken through to the other side of its head, skidding a few feet when you finally do.

Covered in its blood and brain matter, you don't even have to look back at the corpse to know that you've achieved the main goal that you set out here to accomplish.

But you do so anyways, just to take in the sight of your handiwork.

The smell of blood that's covering you kind of takes away from the moment, however. Thankful that you've yet to drop the casting of Stone Body just yet, you cast Aqua Suspend once or thrice.

Or maybe six times.

In the end, all the guts that were once covering your body have been rinsed off and so you deem it safe to turn back to your usual fleshy self.

"...hm?"

Oh english grammar. That sentence means absolutely the wrong icky thing.
>>
>>36678456
Should have had a comma
>his kid, and Karel's
>>
>>36678456
actually it more implies we met his kid and also Karel's kid, who is a separate person. The "and" indicates we've moved on to a separate entity in addition to his kid, but the lack of a comma means we're still in the clause covering people's children so "Karel's" is a possessive form of an implied additional child rather than the contraction "Karel is"
>>
>>36678353
>Adrien had no obligation to take care of two random street rats
Just because he had no obligation doesn't mean he isn't a shitty person for not helping.
It shows he was a shitty friend by not making sure the kids Volker wanted to adopt were safe and shows he's no better than the general populace of Cateno for just leaving them there.
>>
>>36678534
Depending on which dialect of English you use, it can mean either way, although admittedly the version implying he and Karel had a kid is more of a spoken variant than written.
>>
>>36678559
It's not a valid dialect anywhere in the UK, I can tell you that for sure. It's superficially ambiguous, but that meaning would actually violate some of the underlying constructive rules of English grammar that apply universally.

At most it could mean their shared child in a spoken sentence where Karel was plainly being tacked on because you'd forgotten to mention her earlier, which would be indicated in speech via unusual tone, rhythm, and possibly hand gestures. And that rhythm should still be represented in written English as a comma or full stop.
>>
>>36678592
It's a common syntax in Australian English.

Without the comma it is assumed that the posessive "Karel's" is referring to the preceeding object; i.e 'Adrien's kid'.

Really? Must only be part of Australia then, because my Aussie friends think it's wrong too. with an indeterminate possessive like "Karel's" as part of a list linked by "and", the implied passage is concretely

>How do you think he's going to react when we tell him we met [his kid] and [Karel's kid]

where those two terms could be replaced grammatically with

>How do you think he's going to react when we tell him we met [INSERT NAME] and [INSERT NAME]

While in the strictest sense you are allowed to make those two people the same person, I know of no dialect where it's considered comprehensible or acceptable grammar as it fucks up your ability to easily list multiple unknown people while facilitating the almost useless construction for referring to relationships of a single person when every Australian I know would prefer to say "[his and Karel]'s kid" for that purpose, which follows the standard rules for listing multiple entities with "and".

Again, it's a spoken thing and yes, it does sound stupid if you write it down or stop to analyse and pick apart the structure - the majority of people who actually use that syntax frequently have probably never given a flying fuck about proper grammar in their lives.

OTOH, I work with dozens of those kinds of people so I end up reflexively understanding sentence structure in ways that conform to how they speak.
You'll never find it in an English textbook unless it's covering bogan dialects specifically, at any rate.

In most english dialects, comma separated lists are how you avoid saying
>we met her kid and Dave's and Anne's and Bill's and Fred's and Becky's and Julie's and Steve's and...

the "ands" are mostly skipped where it's clear we're listing a large number of similar forms, though it's common to leave it on for the final entry to indicate reaching the end of the list.

So that's in perfect agreement with the interpretation of the sentence by >>36678709.

...by which I mean the comma list would be interpreted as multiple kids of various parents rather than several parents of one child

I'm guessing that syntax is only common in places where they never have to deal with any semi-complex relational structures, since playing loose with that grammar would make those inherently hard to describe.

Oh hey, the checkbox is working again. Maybe google fixed it from getting stuck on the CAPTCHA test.

Mostly they just don't give a shit. If you said "semi-complex relational structures" to them, their eyes would start to gloss over or they'd call you a cunt and walk off. It's that sort of intellectual level you're dealing with.

As with much of bogan grammar, 90% of actual meaning is inferred from context anyway, so it doesn't seem to impair their ability to communicate with each other.

Yeah, I kind of figured when you specified bogan dialects, I just didn't want to blanket dismiss things by saying "but the people who have those dialects don't generally engage in tasks that couldn't be intellectually mastered by porridge, so context is more than sufficient"

Though, saying that, I have family who work in social services in varying capacities, and I have witnessed incredibly bitter feuds lasting weeks or months that only occurred because of misinterpreted ambiguous language rather than any real dispute. Their family trees tend to look like the spiderwebs that get made in space so it's not too surprising that their shitty grasp of language coupled with hairtrigger defensive tempers makes pointless bickering commonplace.

It's kind of sad that unlike them, the spiders have adapted and overcome the problems, but you don't give up on anyone I suppose.
