You are Arhan, first of the Awakened, Commander of the Legion of the Damned. Your black armored shell burns with the twinkling red of warpfire that constantly rolls across your hard surface, a gentle smoulder without to reflect the raging fires that burn constantly within your dark frame.

Your form resembles a space marine in power armor, but you begin to suspect you may be something else entirely. Your eternal quest, to defend the weak and helpless of the Imperium, has brought you to this world, an icy ball of rock with a dark sky. It is beset my orks, and opportunistic eldar reavers have descended to make attacks on key positions, following some unknown plan of their own.

You and your entire force, one full company, have arrived upon this world. You have just concluded a battle for a key communication facility, a vital link in the chain of communication and supply, defending it from viscous dark eldar. You now prepare to set out up the long ice road to Pandoven city, a major defensive hub and spaceport.

But you are not alone, several regiments of the Valhallan Ice Warriors were deployed here, and one such force defends the site you just saved.

You are now making your preparations to depart.

With nothing else to do, you saddle up onto your warbike and head off down the road. You move slowly due to your other forces moving on foot, but you are making decent time despite the terrible conditions.

"It's strange." Rafel says as he walks beside you. "To be in the mortal world when not in battle, this place is so different." The apothecary held up a hand to the wind, snow melting as it passed through his ethereal flames.

"I've been studying our makeup, I can't find anything inside these suits, just flame, no bones or flesh, nothing. It's the same for all of us, I don't know what we are, but we're not anything that could be called alive, by the laws of this place."

''We must have a chaplain awaken soon, perhaps he will provide aid in knowing what we are''
>>
"I hope that a chaplain awakens soon, perhaps he will provide aid in discovering what we are."

He nodded. "I believe a chaplain would be of assistance in uncovering the truth, at least some of it. A librarian would be helpful as well, as we seem intrinsically connected to the warp. I dare not speculate further on the nature of our existence, I need to run further tests."

You nod, riding slowly. "What we are is important to know, our strengths and weaknesses. But we have the strength and will to raise gun and sword, and for now, that is enough."

Your journey continues on through the blinding snowstorm which never seems to abate, you have to keep a close eye on the unawakened less they wander off into the frozen wastes. Time stretches, you are a being of great patience, used to waiting a very long time to act, so the long howling darkness does bother you terribly much.

Eventually you see a town, practically stumbling into it due to the blizzard. No greeting party meets you, no lights shine in the windows, no movement is seen or felt at all. And yet... there is something, like a tiny tug on your mind.

>Actions?

>>36745650
Get off bike and approach on foot with the rest of the marines.
>>
You dismount, walking into the town. "I sense something... search pattern." You order, the warriors fanning out, their flickering forms barely visible through the snow. On closer inspection, you see this town has not been spared violence, buildings are wrecked, and small mounds of snow in the street mark bodies.

Rafel kneels by a stricken man. "Dead, frozen, at least a day." He said, shaking his head before rising. "No one came to their aid."

You walk through the frozen tomb of a town, seeing broken windows and lighting gone dark. "No, no one did." You say, wondering why you are sent where you are. Surely for each battle you save from the jaws of defeat, a thousand others are lost without recourse.

The tugging on your thoughts grows stronger as you near the source, a broken down home with the door hanging ajar, the wall washed with flames. You sense the source of the disturbance is inside.

"Awakened, to me." You intone, calling them to you. You enter the home cautiously, pressing past the broken door which opens with a solemn creek. The home within is damaged, swept with snow that blew in through the broken door and windows, and there are bullet holes in the walls.

On the floor, the body of a man lays dead, a shotgun in his hand, killed while reloading. Rafel sweeps the snow aside with his boot. "There is Xenos blood on the floor, he did not go quietly, he managed to at least injure one of them."

You press on further, deeper down a hall, before you finally find the source of the psychic call in the last room. You enter, finding the bedroom of a child. In the corner is a tiny figure, bundled in cloths against the biting cold. Her brown hair spills over the floor and she is clutching a small stuffed creature to her chest.

She is barely moving. "A survivor?" Rafel asks, having not dared to hope, taking the first step towards the tiny figure.

"Rafel, inspect her, be ready for a trap."

The apothecary nods, walking over gingerly, kneeling down beside her. Gingerly he checked her over. "Human, girl, six or seven years of age, uninjured but suffering from the cold. I'm not detecting any kind of a trap." he carefully picked her up. "She's unconscious." He said, walking over.

Valkyr looked about. "I don't think anyone else is left alive here, the xenos scum were very through."

Rafel nodded. "We cannot leave her here, she will not last, any no one is coming to help."

"Is there anything we can do?" Lucerne says. "Can we even help, and do we dally here while battles rage elsewhere?" He pointed out, his voice somber.

You turn to the techmarine. "We must help. It is what we do, what we are for, is it not?" You take the girl, feeling how cold she is through the armor, your ethereal flames rolling harmlessly over her.

"Try to contact the guard, perhaps they can do something." You say, looking down to her.

"... Very well." He spends some time working on the vox, trying to raise them. "Ach, the storm sir, it hampers communications and I believe the local relay in this town is offline, we cannot punch through. Besides, we are more than halfway to our destination... I suppose we could take her with us." He said, not sounding thrilled at the prospect.

Rafel checks the house and finds some food, bundling it up and storing it on his belt. "I doubt we'll find much else here, and we're needed up the road. Your orders sir?"

Take the girl in the warbike, the heat from the engine should be something. I'm sure we can scavenge a few blankets from the surrounding area.

Resume marching. Pay attention to any vox transmissions, try to find out if there's a friendly position where we can drop her off for safekeeping during the assault.

When we get close to the enemy we may have to leave her and later return.

I did announce it. Everybody use this to keep updated.

Yeah, there should at least be blankets in the surrounding houses. This isn't a completely ransacked town, a few minutes' search should yield results. Then we have to go.

Ensure the child is warm. then move out on the bike. If we can find a safe place for the child before the assault, leave her there. If not... get her behind the guardsman lines as quick as we can, preferably with Cain.

Ah glad to hear then, I don't have access to twitter right now so I didn't know whether you had
>>
"Search around quickly, find some blankets or something, we'll try to get her into the hands of other humans as fast as we can. Until then, her life is in our hands, we cannot let her down."

A brief search finds some blankets, and you bundle her up more before mounting up, holding her close. She shifts a little, pressing closer to your warm chestpiece in her sleep.

Your forces resume their march into the biting cold and bitter snowswept winds, continuing for some time. Eventually you look down to see one hand has come loose from the stuffed grox toy, and grips the edges of the aquila mounted on your chest, her skin no longer deathly pale. She seems to be waking up, two eyes looking up at you from within the wrappings.

"Commander, I'm getting something." Lucerne said, working his auspex. "It's the city, I'm detecting Imperial Guard transmissions, it's distorted but I think I can home in on it." He resumed his work.

Go to the transmissions.
Oh God-emperor, please let us deliver this child safely.
Oh god I just realized she's a psyker and she's not on a black ship. This will end in tears.

press on to the city have Lucerne try to unscramble the vox transmissions and tell the child she is safe
>>

>>
You look down to her, metal gauntlet gently cupping the bundle. "Hush child, you are safe, He sent us to come and find you, and take you to safety." Her small, timid eyes watch you, hand insistently gripping your breastplate.

"Lucerne, try to home in one those transmissions, we need to link up with the Guard."

He nodded, working various switches and dials on his gear. "I think sir... I have it! There's a unit not far from here, I can hear their side of the conversation at least.

He patches you into the channel and you hear the transmission. Whatever the person in the city is saying isn't clear, it's mostly static and distortion, but you hear the other side from the local unit.

"What? No, I'm telling you, they're right on top of us here!" ***** "No, not the orks, the eldar. Yes, them, they're right on top of our position, trying to... well I don't bloody know why but give us some damn support here." ***** "No don't you dare put me on hold!"

Then you hear the sounds of a vox headset being wrenched from whoever was holding it, and a new man's voice is heard. "Listen to me, this is Commissar Ciaphas Cain, Valhallan 597th Infantry regiment, I am using my commissariat code to authorize this diversion, if you do not comply this instant, then so help me if I make it out of this I will shoot you myself!"

There was a lot of squawking on the other end of the line.

Technically we have the authority of a Chapter master at most, or a Company Captain at least, so we can very easily ignore the aforementioned Commissar Stupidfuck
>>
You answer quickly "We have heard you. we are coming." Before you cut the line.

"The Imperial Guard is embattled with the dark eldar, we must engage at once, it sounds bad. Valkyr, take you assaults forward and hit them when they least expect, try to link up with friendly forces. Lucerne, Rafel, with me."

They nod, Rafel looking to the girl. "And her, sir? A battle is no place for a child, and I hardly trust one of the unawakened with her. Should one of us look after her?" he asks.

>Keep the girl yourself
>Let one of the awakened take care of her (This will remove them from the fight)

>>36748779
we definitely don't have those. She's way to small and definitely not strong enough to wield any space marine weapon.
>>
"No, I shall keep her, I have the utmost faith in your abilities, I think you can handle a few eldar pirates without me standing over your shoulders, go, and be quick about it, lives are on the line." They nod and you sit upon your warbike, looking out at the source of the signal as you draw closer. It seems to be a small outpost, military by the looks of it.

The small hand on your chestpiece brings you out of your gazing. "Hello, small one... Do you have a name?" She remains quiet. You place your hand on your chestpiece. "I am Arhan, can you tell me your name now?" She was quiet for a moment, before speaking in a quiet voice. "Cy-Cyrene."

You nod. "Well, Cyrene, don't worry, I'm going to make sure you stay safe. Please hold on, I'm going to try and ride to some soldiers, they're going to help us." You say, before reving the engine, riding down towards the outpost. You can see and hear the comm chatter of the battle underway, your forces pouring rapidly into the little outpost. It can't take very long, a full company tends to cause an impact.

You stay back, directing the fight from afar before you sense your chance, gunning the throttle and racing through the compound, taking fire for a brief moment before you ramp off a fallen wall and sail through the air over a defensive embankment, landing with a thud and a burst of flame amidst what looks like at least a squad or two if Imperial Guardsmen.

"What the frack!" shouts one, crawling backwards.

"Silence. There is a child present." You reprimand him.

Where is your commanding officer?
>>
You look down to the panicked Guardsman. "Where is your commanding officer?" You ask, eyes burning like red coals.

"Well... The Commissar is outside the walls, went to go check one of the seismic sensors... this is a listening post... you see. The lieutenant's in back missing half his head... So I suppose he isn't in charge anymore."

You nod, taking the bundle of a girl and handing her over to the guardsman. "Here. This is Cyrene, you are going to take care of her for me. I will be back to check on her, you understand." You say as you draw your bolter.

"Yes sir of course sir I'll take care of her sir!" He assures you very quickly as Cyrene pouts slightly at being given to somebody else.

"What's the situation out there?" You ask, looking up over the embankment. "Going well sir, but the enemy's popping up out of the snow, I swear, they just keep coming." Valkyr answers.

You throttle up, raising your weapon before you ride out of the compound, leaving a brief burning trail where the fiery tires chew through the snow. You head in the direction of the sensor the gurdsman pointed out, keeping a steady watch. You put warp bolts through a few dark eldar, but it's nothing noteworthy. Finally though you see something.

Up ahead there are a few figures engaged in a frantic melee, it seems like a pair of figures sword fighting, while a few others are struggling in a brawl, various other warriors taking potshots at each other. The sword fighters are whirling and turning rapidly, showing great skill while the others are far more unrefined.
