You are Captain WILLIAM PIERCE, a combat rescue officer of the United States Air Force.

And currently, you were in the White House Rose Garden, in the middle of your Medal of Honor award ceremony. Sure, it should be one of the biggest and most momentous occasions of your life, but right now you couldn't help but be nervous at all of the VIPs present in the crowd, not to mention being within arms reach of the President of the United States himself as he was in the middle of his speech.

Also, your formal Air Force dress uniform, which you had not worn in quite some time, felt tight and itchy.

"...and so Captain William Pierce, Lieutenant Rachel Kelsey, and Airman Rex Bishop stayed behind on the ground to ensure that their charges could be evacuated safely. They then proceeded to evade enemy pursuit, and were at some points forced into vicious hand to hand combat against an enemy witch, in which Lieutenant Kelsey suffered grievous wounds." The President said. "Their extraordinary heroism and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest standards of military service and the United States Air Force. I now present to these three the Congressional Medal of Honor."

The gathered crowd stands and applauds as the President walks up to pin the aforementioned medal on your, Red, and Rex's chests.

"C'mon, son." The President winks and pats you on the shoulder. "Let's go inside and get us some drinks! Don't have nearly enough to celebrate about these days!"

The entire event them moves inside, where you and your squadron find yourselves among the elite of Washington DC. Senators, Generals, and ambassadors from various nations were in attendance. It was almost overwhelming. You lose most of your squadron in the shuffle, but fortunately Janice sticks to you like glue, her arms wrapped around yours.

"Awfully crowded." You comment.

"Indeed." Janice nods. "Though you might want to find somebody to mingle with."

"Why?"

"Janice turns her eyes to one side of the room, where you see a gaggle of what you presume to be senators and congressmen eying your every movement.

"We're a political goldmine right now." She whispers. "Politicians are like savannah cats. They'll lurk close to juicy prey and then pounce when they see weakness. Right now we're just two lone gazelles in the middle of a field."

"Okay, good idea." You say, your eyes darting around looking for solace.

"Actually, let's fetch Laika first." You say.

"Oh, good idea!" Janice smiles. "They'll be overjoyed to see her!"

You head over to the back of the party, where you fetch Laika, who had been playing with the other children that had been brought along to the function.

"Where are we going?" She asks.

"You're going to meet our mommies and daddies." Janice grins as she pinches Laika's cheek.

"Oooooh!" Laika sits up a bit straighter. "Can't wait!"

As you head back, you can see both yours and Janice's dad in the same group of senators and war vets, while your and her mom were with the wives, like in any typical formal function.

You head towards Mom first. After all, she'd LOVE to see Laika, you're sure.

"Hey, Mom." You smile.

"Oh, if it isn't the star of the show!" Mom hugs you. "To think, my own son getting a Medal of Honor!"

"Mom, seriously, it's not that big of a deal." You laugh.

"No big deal?!" Mom glowers at you. "Do you know how hard it is to get one of those and not die in the process? Don't be going all modest at a time like this!"

"Oh please, he wouldn't be a hero if he wasn't modest." Janice's mom smiles. "Ah, Janice, I see you brought Laika, too!"

"Oooooooh!" Mom's eyes widen as she kneels down. "Is this the new girl in your unit you've been talking about?"

"Yes she is." You nod. "Mom, this is Laika. Laika, this is my Mom."

"You're pretty." Laika says simply.

"Oh she is SO CUTE!" Mom hugs Laika. "She reminds me of Briana when she was that age! Shame she couldn't come!"

You vaguely wonder if Mom's memory as fuzzy. You never remembered Bree being nice or sweet AT ALL.

"So, in light of recent events," Janice's mom grins, "me and your mother have been talking about things..."

"...what things?" You grimace.

"Marriage arrangements!" They both chime.

Both you and Janice freeze like ice.

"Mother..." Janice shakes her head and sighs.

"You mean you're NOT married?" Laika blinks.

"Quiet, Laika." You grunt. "Do you even know what that word means?"

"Dunno." She shrugs. "It sounds cool, though."

"You are FAR too young to be thinking about things like that, young lady." You sigh.

"Oh my, he already sounds like a father!" Mom chortles.

"Oh, you children will have such a wonderful pedigree!" Janice's mom grins.

Well, you guess-

"We're not even close to thinking about that yet." You blanch. "At least not until after the war."

"Oh, understandable." Mom nods. "But, that doesn't mean you can't prepare! We've already been picking out clothes, and even come up with a shortlist of names! Two separate ones depending on gender, of course!"

"M-mother..." Janice shakes her head. "This is too much..."

"Oh, don't silly! Your grandparents were the exact same way!" Janice's mom laughs.

"Excuse me." Another woman, close to the mothers' age, and wearing a Navy uniform, steps in. "I was wondering if I could talk to Captain Pierce."

"Oh, Esther, of course!" Janice's mom smiles. "William, Janice, this is Matron Esther Longstreet, who runs the Naval Academy at Annapolis!"

"Ma'am." You salute.

"No need. I'm the one who should be saluting." Longstreet smiles. "That is one of the perks of the Medal of Honor, after all."

"I guess so." You nod. "So why would a Matron like you want to talk with us?"

"Isn't it obvious? You two are set up to be a very politically powerful couple." Longstreet says simply. You get the feeling that she's the extremely blunt type. "A war hero paired with the daughter of a Matron and very respected attorney? Those are the kind of people you'd want to have on your contact list."

"As is a full fledged Matron?" You raise an eyebrow.

"Ah, so you understand the game. That's right." Longstreet nods. "We may be working in separate branches, but I think trading a few favors down the line won't benefit just us, but the country as a whole in the future."

"I'm sure." You nod. "Janice? What do you think?"

"Oh, more acquaintances are always nice!" Janice nods, though her demeanor seems a bit more artificial.

"Can you give us just a second, please?" You ask Longstreet.

"Sure, go ahead." Longstreet shrugs.

You turn away with Janice and quietly whisper to her.

"Okay, so what's the deal with Longstreet?"

"There's no 'deal' between me and her." Janice huffs.

"But I can tell you don't have a high opinion of her." You say back.

"Well..." Janice sighs. "I don't have anything against her personally, but I do disagree with her training methods. She's a harsh disciplinarian who does not hold back any criticism or punishment. We've had quite a few transfers from Annapolis to our Academy due to "personal differences". Of course, they never say anything specific, but it's easy to infer."

"So why's your mom all chummy with her?" You ask.

"They've known each other for a long time. I think they even fought side by side at some point. Plus, despite what I think of Longstreet's policies, you can't argue that it must be effective if it keeps her in Annapolis."

"So, your opinion on associating with her?"

"I'd be careful. She's a very practical person, but also fanatically patriotic. The type that would bleed on the flag to make sure the stripes are red."

"Okay, I'll keep that in mind." You nod before turning back to Longstreet. "Ah, so where were we?"

"Talking about the country's future." Longstreet says bluntly. "Miss Foster, I think this would be a good opportunity for the East and West Coast academies to forge closer ties. Currently, each individual academy has its own enrollment standards, curriculum, and training methods. Frankly, it's an absolute mess, and horribly inefficient. I was wondering if I could count on you to support measures that could standardize policies across not only the West and East, but eventually every academy in the United States."

"That sounds mighty ambitious." Janice says diplomatically. "But I'm afraid my influence is somewhat limited. I'm just a Lieutenant in the Air Force, and don't hold any position of authority in any academy."

"Not yet, anyways." Longstreet grins. "I have an ear for these things. Your mother is guaranteed to be granted Matron status once she assumes leadership of the Los Angles academy, and with your pedigree, I won't be surprised if you'll be given an academy of your own eventually."

"Still, I think that sort of talk is very premature." Janice gives a forced smile. "But it's certainly something to think about."

"As long as you understand." Longstreet nods, seemingly satisfied. She then turns her attention to you. "And Captain, I hear some very interesting things from your unit."

"Really now?" You force a smile of your own. "What kind of things?"

"You're practically running a worlds' fair of witches. American, Japanese, and French witches all in a single unit? I can only recall one other individual in the armed forces that could pull that off."

"To be fair, the DoD is in charge of my unit composition. I don't really have much say in those matters."

"Though one thing does bother me." Longstreet continues. "Lieutenant Kelsey. I've been going over her academy and training records, and I've found that she has particularly powerful magical talent, but from what I get from your reports, she refuses to use strikers?"

"That's right." You nod.

"Pity." Longstreet sighs. "Seems like such a waste. A witch of her caliber could do some real good in a set of strikers."

"It's her choice to operate without strikers and I respect it." You say, narrowing your eyes. "And either way, she does plenty of good the way she is now. Moving around on foot gives her a tactical flexibility that benefits a CSAR unit like us more than anything else. Plus, the fact that she's also sporting one of these medals should speak volumes about her effectiveness."

"Yes, and that medal was very nearly a posthumous one." Longstreet narrows her eyes as well. "That sort of behavior is going to get her killed, and then we'd be down one very good witch."

"We'll see about that." You as you stare at her.

However, the confrontation is broken up when Dad intervenes.

"William!" He says happily, grabbing you by the shoulder. "I want you to meet an old friend of mine!"

"Sorry, Matron Longstreet." You say. "It appears I have other engagements to attend."

"Until next time, then." Longstreet responds.

You don't even have time to comment on Longstreet with Janice when you're pulled into Dad's little group of friends. He then brings you front of a similarly middle aged man in a suit. Though he was dressed as a politician, you could tell from his appearance and the way he carried himself that he was military, or at least ex-military.

"Son, meet Thomas Whitmore. We served together in Asia, and he's saved my life more than a few times!"

"We've saved each others' lives more than a few times." He chuckles.

The UN's mandate is to coordinate Earth's defenses from an alien attack, as well as to control all nukes and superweapons on the planet.
They're not supposed to mess with wars between nations unless and until someone makes a grab for a nuke.

The UN wasn't being ineffective when the Soviet's pushed through the Fulga Gap, they were doing as they were supposed to do.
>>
>>36773701

The UN can't stop the wars between the member states but the military units attached to the anti-alien weapons have kept out of this completely.

"That actually sounds like a good idea." You nod. "But what exactly does that entail?"

"Currently, only the UN is allowed to have weapons capable of reaching past the Earth's orbit." Whitmore says. "But what I want to do is give the American military the capability to put defense assets into space at a moment's notice. Me and my team have already got a rough outline for what we want to do."

"Almost makes me want to get into politics myself!" Janice's dad laughs.

"Father, we've been through this." Janice sighs. "You'll never become a senator because that means you'll have to take a pay cut."

"Don't underestimate my resolve, Janice!" Her father pats her on the head. "Maybe I'll even be the President myself, on day!"

"Excuse me, Captain." You hear another voice and you turn to see a General. No, not any general...

It was General Malcolm Granger, the Chief of Staff of United States Air Force.

"Sir!" You snap to attention and salute, with Janice doing the same.

"At ease, Captain." Malcom says and snaps off a salute. "I'm the one who should be saluting YOU."

"What brings you here, sir?" You ask.

"I actually had a bit of a proposition for you." General Granger says and glances at your father and his group. "Unless I'm intruding on something?"

A SOLG would technically be a defense asset within Earth orbit, and so within the scope of Whitmore's plan.

Of course, all it takes is a few course corrections, a software update, and now the weapons platform aiming towards Mars is now aiming towards Earth.

The UN comes down with both feet on anyone even trying to develop a nuclear weapons program, let alone anyone developing actual nukes.

If anyone uses a nuke, then they get erased from the face of the Earth.

>There is only one currently operational flying superweapon under the UNEDF treaty.

ARKBIRD- A joint Imperial Japanese-American project, the arkbird is a large orbital space plane equipped with a pair of long-range Laser weapons designed to engage orbital targets, and several orbit-to-surface kinetic weapons- 'rods from god'. The orbit to surface strike capability is considered mostly superfluous by analysts, who point out that any XT threat that would require such an attack on earth would have already destroyed the arkbird.

In addition to these, Russia operates two extremely large submarines- the Oktyabrskaya Revolyutsiya and the Poltava. While not explicitly considered superweapons by the UNEDF, these subs are considered the equal in destructive power of a US or IJN carrier battlegroup.

Russia also operates the Maxim Gorky- a large, flying aircraft carrier. Capable of handling a single squadron of aircraft, the Gorky is capable of self-defense with several batteries of long range Air to air missiles and attacks with multiple air-to-surface weapons.

"I'm all ears, sir." You say.

"Now, from what I understand, you've got a very skilled pilot in your squadron flying experimental aircraft, but she's currently using an obsolete tech demonstrator." General Granger says. "What if I told you that the Air Force would be willing to 'upgrade' her plane to something far more cutting edge?"

"How cutting edge are we talking about, sir?" You ask.

"Well, as you know, Russia's newest Flankers and the appearance of the Fandance, as well as the Navy's Wyvern means the air war is advancing at a rapid place, and I hate to admit it, but the F-15 is starting to lag behind." General Granger grunts. "Fortunately, our R&D predicted this and had been working on new generation of air superiority fighter, and the war only accelerated development. We call our new plane the F-22 Raptor. Outperforms the Eagle in every way, and is predicted to outperform any Flanker variant and maintain parity with the Fandance and Wyvern. We're starting to roll them out now, but I personally commissioned the creation of a souped up version I call the King Raptor."

"So you want us to test out this 'King Raptor.'" You say.

"Well, that's one of the choices." General Granger affirms. "The second choice is the XF-19. It's a fighter whose design and capabilities are projected to match, or even exceed, the Merlin-Wyvern."

"But there's a catch, isn't there?" You narrow your eyes.

"Suffice to say, we haven't been able to find a pilot who can properly control it, but I have a feeling your girl can do it. Just getting flight data from it can help us refine future plane design and save a lot of lives."

So, basically, it was a choice of letting Laika pilot a slightly weaker, but more stable plane, or a wildcard plane that literally nobody else has been able to fly. However, you knew exactly what Laika would pick if you gave her the choice...

"Okay, I'm interested now. What's this XF-19?" You ask.

"The latest in next generation fighter design." General Granger says proudly as he surreptitiously hands you a folder. You open it up to see a single picture of a very sleek looking craft with forward canted wings.

"Like the F-16, it's been specifically designed to be as aerodynamically unstable as possible to maximize maneuverability, and that's where most of the trouble lies. Our current avionics can't keep up with it, meaning the pilot has to manually adjust to whatever the computer can't handle. However, other than that, it's go anything a fighter pilot can ask for. High speed, low drag, extreme maneuverability, 3D thrust vectoring, and has a next generation ECM system. It's even capable of carrying specialized, modular equipment on a dorsal mount."

"Sounds nice." You whistle. "When can we get it?"

"I just need to make a phone call and it'll be shipped out to Japan within the day."

"I'm sure our pilot will love it." You nod.

"You're doing the Air Force a major credit, Captain." General Granger pats you on the shoulder. We'll show both the Russians and the Navy that we still rule the skies."

With that, General Granger gives you one last salute before moving off to talk to another group of officers and dignitaries. You look around to find anybody else to mingle with. Unfortunately, it seemed that the President and the Emperor were gone. Probably went to some private meeting room or something. However, you do spot some other faces.

"Hey, Janice, look who's here." You nod to Christina.

"Oh my, it's been ages since we've seen her!" Janice smiles. "Let's go meet her!"

"Who's that general she's talking to?" You ask.

If there was anything neat and proper about him, it was his lab coat, which was white and spotless. However, why he thought wearing a lab coat to a formal function was a good idea was beyond you.

I nominate Tarin for that position. She can become invisible and watch Pierce and Jan go at it, just like in the lewdfics!

"I REGRET NOTHING!" You bellow as Christina throttles you. "NOOTTTHIIIIIING!"

"You nearly killed her!" Christina wails. "My beautiful Ghost Hawk!"

"I- wait, what?" You pause. "What about Rachel?"

"Hmph, Rachel gets herself hurt all the time. It's nothing new." Christina harumphs.

"Okay,... can you let go of my neck now?" You plead.

"I'd rather not have to resuscitate him in front of all these people..." Janice chuckles nervously.

"Fine." Christina sighs. "Oh right, you probably didn't meet him before. This is my husband Randall. Randall, this is Captain William Pierce and Lieutenant Janice Foster. They help test out some of my inventions."

"Hey." Randall grunts, obviously wanting to be somewhere else very badly. "Do I really have to be here? There's stuff I have to calibrate-"

"It's the very least you can do to for your daughter, dear, and our boss and primary source of funding, General Townes, is also here!" Christina says with forced cheer, putting her husband into a headlock.

"As lively as ever." General Townes says flatly. "I take it your team was the one that rescued Sokolov?"

"That's right, sir." You nod.

"Good man. You've put our research forward by years. Decades, even."

"What kind of research?" You ask.

"All kinds of things. Striker interfaces, mostly. However, he's also contributed quite a bit to our laser technology program."

"Really, now?" You say. "Lasers?"

"Of course!" Randall steps. "Lasers are THE WAY OF THE FUTURE!"

"Quiet, dear." Christina sighs and turns to you. "Me and Sokolov have been working on a prototype module that can be mounted on a plane, but we can't agree what we should focus on, defensive or offensive power. Offensive is obvious, as it gives the laser enough power to burn through most objects. Defensive would allow us to intercept incoming projectiles to protect vulnerable systems."

"I think that there's more value in using lasers as a defensive weapon." You say.

"Hmph. That's what Sokolov said, too." Christina sighs. "But I guess I can see both your points. We'll get something cooked up, but there's a catch."

"Such as?" You raise an eyebrow.

"Current power requirements for laser weaponry are quite high. The smallest conventional power source we have that can power a laser can only fight on a Boeing 747." Christina explains.

"Which is why we with something unconventional!" Randall adds in. "And that something is MAGIC."

"Yes, magic." Christina nods. "In short, on a vehicle crewed by a witch, that witch can supplement the weapon with her own power in order to operate it. This, of course, limits the module to certain vehicles, but we're still working on ways to make fighter portable versions more feasible."

"I'm looking forward to it." You say.

"Sir." Tarin melds out of the crowd and appears right next to you. "We have a situation."

"What kind of situation?" You narrow your eyes.

"It looks like Red has had one drink too many."

"Uh oh."

"Perhaps we should be going now..." Janice advises.

"Yes, yes we should." You say as you nod the 3 scientists. "Until next time."

And so began the epic saga of how Red assaulted Vice President Dan Quayle...
