You, Tia, your maid Millian and the ghost Reken leave Tianna as a new dawn breaks on the horizon.

Amata was understandably worried about letting you go like this, but she didn't raise many objections. After all, you and Tia should be able to look after yourselves, and it's just a matter of exchanging hostages and, hopefully, preventing this entire battle from happening. She informed you that she will hold the fort, literally so, and focus on the defense of the walls surrounding the city of Tianna until you'll be back.

Millian requisitioned a small horse-drawn cart from the army, mostly to "look a little more official than if we just walked there", which you admit isn't something you thought of. So, as the mist of the night dissipates and the rays of the sun bathe the countryside, you ride out.

The roads leading to Tianna are choked with the influx of refugees, the result of the evacuation of the many outlying villages, farms, mills and such. Scared, desperate people carrying only their most precious belongings. Hopefully the evacuation will be complete before night... In any case, Tianna will be crowded.

You remember Amata's words: the city doesn't have the supplies to survive a long siege. At best, you'd have one week.

At worst, well, just until someone blasts a hole in the walls. You don't have a second line of defense past that.

You feel nervous, nervous in a way that neither Fae nor Lintha made you. But it's neither the overwhelming odds against you nor the fact that this time you're fighting other Exalted that makes you so nervous.

It's the realization that, while the other times you fought you were on the offensive and you had the initiative, this time... This time Tianna is on the line. And with it, all the people you've met and grown to care about since your Exaltation.

...not to mention the giant doom fortress buried under the city. Yeah, that might be a factor.

The awkward silence hanging around you as you ride out, broken only by the horse's hoofsteps and the cart's creaking, makes your mind wander...

Think about the Deathlord, Tyrant of the Doomsday Machine and what she wants the Titan for and how she knew about it. She's probably, definitely the Solar that held Maka's Exaltation during the First Age. The Name just fits too well.

You turn to Millian. She looks cute yet oddly badass in that suit of armor she donned over her maid dress. You wonder where she even found something her size.

"...So, what did we miss while on the sea?" You ask her. "Anything happened in Tianna?"

She's staring in the distance, in the direction you're going towards, but your words shake her from her train of thoughts. "Uh? No... not much. As far as I know, the army kept spotting that Abyssal lurking around town, but never managed to corner him."

"Phoenix." You mumble. "The Tyrant sure wants us to know that she's been keeping an eye on us."

"There's been something else, though..." She continues.

"Huh?" First time you hear about this. Well, you've been in a hurry, so it's understandable. You didn't have the time to stop and ask, up to now.

"Well, there's some... remember when I and Regis have been attacked by that ghost?"

"Amata told me, yeah." You reply, noticing Reken perking up as soon as she hears her.

"Seems like there have been other incidents in town. Ghostly appearances, hauntings and infestations."

You cast a sideways glance at Reken. "You're still blaming this on the Silver Prince?"

She raises her hands in a defensive gesture. "I don't know! I've been locked up, remember?"

"And... there's another thing. Have you talked with Pyre Spark?" Millian asks.

"...No. Didn't have time." You do feel bad about it. You didn't even see her, but it might have been because of the military lockdown in the city, Curfew and all.
Even though, well, Pyre Spark could probably beat up any other mortal soldier in Tianna, she's technically a civilian, so it makes sense.

"She said something about... an angel of sunlight."

"...A what?"

"She didn't seem sure about it either. She said something about a dream..."

"What did she dream about?"

"Flowers."

You groan. "She always dreams about flowers. I have no idea how she can interpret those dreams."

"But she kind of foresaw it. In the last two or three days, there has been word going around of this "angel of light" saving people from ghost attacks."

"Anybody got hurt?" You wonder.

"Some people. A few wounded, but nothing serious. Fortunately."

You turn to Reken. "...Do you know anything about this "angel of light"?"

She shakes her head. "No idea. Maybe blasts from sorcery of essence-discharge weaponry? If Phoenix is lurking around town, it might be him taking out these ghosts."

You try thinking about it for a bit, but nothing comes to mind. Maybe another one of Amata's secrets? Some weapon to defend Tianna from the ghosts?

"...So, how do you feel about going to the rescue of your boyfriend?"

"He's n-" She starts, but shuts up immediately. "...I hope he's alright."

"He best be." you give Reken a harsh stare.

The ghost just shrugs, unconcerned. "He'll be fine."

The next few hours pass by uneventfully, in reflexive silence or idle chatter, until you notice an encampment lying on your way.

You see a wooden palisade, and a squareish fortification built from large, roughly-hewn blocks of dark rock. Black and grey banners fly from the lonely outpost, surrounded by wild, unkempt countryside, cleared of trees in all directions.

"Is that..." Millian mumbles, but Tia silently stands up. You can feel all her senses and nerves sharpening all of sudden.

"Black and silver unblazoned." Reken notices. "The colors of Feurdelis of Eternity."

"Her." You frown, looking at the fort's battlements.

Lined with skeletal warriors. They draw your attention: they are oddly clean, clad in light plate armor and held together by weaves of leather strips. You see spears and bows shining in the morning sun. If you should strike a guess, you'd say about two hundred troops. It's amazing they managed to erect this strongpoint in just two days.

You feel pretty sure of yourself. You're not afraid of these skeletons.

The same is clearly not true of Millian, who seems to be doing her best to keep a straight face, but the beads of sweat on her forehead and her troubled body language paint a different picture.

The skeleton soldiers turn their heads, tracking you as you enter the fort's coutryard. Rough stone constructions and black and silver tents and banners are arrayed inside the walls. The silence is eerie.

Then, from one of the tents, you see Feurdelis emerge. She doesn't seem clad in any armor or carrying any weapon, simply wearing what looks like the same elegant, overwrought dress you first saw her in. She brushes her hair back and steps haughtily towards you, a look of disdain in her eyes.

"...It's been a while, Maka." Her sweet-sounding voice greets you. "Phoenix told me you had picked up a loyal pet." She adds with a second glance at Tia.

She doesn't seem to mind or care the remark, or even to have heard it. Her eyes are fixed on Feurdelis' neck with an intensity that anyone else would find unbearable.

The abyssal, on her part, seems to notice the stare about as much as Tia noticed her insult.

"Mistress Feurdelis." Reken steps down from the cart and bows deeply.

"Reken." The Midnight concedes herself a brief smile. "Welcome back."

"Was Baron fine in my absence?" She asks.

"Barely." Is the amused reply. "I'm amazed he managed to survive on his own without a minder."

"Well, he didn't." The ghost replies, and they both chuckle to their private inside joke.

"I need to talk to your boss." You tell her, straightforward.

"And what makes you think that you're allowed to?" She replies, so fast that you'd think it was a rehearsed response.

"For starters, I want Regis back."

"He's at the airship. With my mistress." She shoots back.

"Then I'm going there."

"No."

You clench your fists. Fleurdelis answers with a smile, showing pearl-white, slightly pointed teeth.

"We suspected that you'd get this weird idea somewhere along the line." She hums, grossing her arms and tapping her foot to the rhythm. "So we got ready."

"Feurdelis. Your Deathlord doesn't want this war any more than I do. We both know this. I need to know if there is..."

She waits for you to collect your thoughts.

"...If there's any other choice, any other option. Any other solution."

"We already told you. Evacuate Tianna and leave it to us."

"No. I am not going to accept that." You stomp your foot down, cracking the dusty ground beneath it. "I'm not discussing this with you. You're just a lackey. I want to talk with your boss."

She straightens her dress. "All of us... lackeys, how you call us, though I'd prefer the term "Deathknights", are scattered along the way leading to the Black Omen, our airship." She informs you. "You're only getting to her through us."

Tia gives you a meaningful stare and slowly shakes her head.

"...Or you can wait here a hour or two, I'll send word to bring Regis here, we can exchange our hostages, and then we can start this silly war." Feurdelis stands in front of you. "Choose."

Mental + Twilight = 9 9 4 9 2 = 3 successes

You open your mouth to reply, but then you close it wordlessly.

...what?

Your brain tries to click the facts together, but they just don't match.

The Tyrant of the Doomsday Machine is a deathlord but doesn't want to kill.
She is giving you time to solve this situation without a war, but orders her Abyssals to get in your way as you do so.
...And she took a hostage to be sure you had a strong reason to do it.

She WANTS to talk things out with you, but she wants you to go through her Deathknights first.

Why? There must be a reason. There must be a plan behind this.

Besides, if Feurdelis just wanted to take you out, she could've had all the Abyssals attack you together. This fort is right on the way to get to the Black Omen, no reason to scatter them all over the place.

She doesn't just want you to face them: she wants you to face them one by one.

And you have no idea why, but you're sure that there's a good reason.

And you're pretty sure Feurdelis isn't going to tell you.

"...I'm going to make my way up to the Black Omen, Feurdelis. And I'll fight you and whoever else will get in my way, if need be."

Tia steps up to your side. She says nothing, but silently stares the Abyssal down.

Feurdelis shrugs, seemingly undaunted. "Put up your dukes then. Ah, is this going to be one-on-one or just all-out?"

>One on one me! Right here, right now.
>Can you take care of this, Tia? I have an appointment with a Deathlord.
>Why should we go easy on you? Let's do this, Tia.

"...How about a nice cup of tea, instead?" You ask her.

Tia turns to you, looking quite surprised. Feurdelis at first replies with a groan, but then breaks in a soft giggle.

"...Alright. Come in." She motions to her tent.

Millian is completely confused. As well as panicking.
It gets worse once you're in. There is not much decor, and what little there is is fairly ghastly. A cabinet of bone and sharp steel. A table of black, petrified wood. Skeletons bring in enough stools for you all, and the cups and teapot too. It's just so surreal.

You all sit down around a cup of tea with the Deathknight. Even Tia seems uncomfortable.

The aroma fills the air. Fresh herbal tea, with a hint of mint, it seems.

"I only have this blend with me." Feurdelis says, apparently considering this situation very amusing. "Hope it'll be alright."

Millian is staring at the cup like she's expecting it to try and eat her. The slightly jagged ends and the skull motif doesn't help.

You take a sip, set the cup down, and focus. You and Feurdelis lock gazes. A shiver runs down your spine.

you EF, some clarification if you don't mind, does MRP make a 7/8/9 into a 10 because it adds 3 to the rolls?

"So." You start. "What about you?"

She takes a long sip of tea. "What ABOUT me?"

"I don't know. You seem to know a lot about me, but I know basically nothing about you." You reply.

"Not much to say." She sets the cup down with the clinking noise of porcelain. "I'm someone who used to live a good life. I was just a dumb kid, but I was happy. I didn't care about anything else. Then, I grew up, and real life punched me so hard I was supposed to die from it."

An icy atmosphere sets down around the table.

"That's when a woman with a plan came to me and told me that she had a way to have it all make sense." *sip* "She also offered me immortality, by the way."

Silence falls again inside the dark army tent. You consider trying to prod her to get some extra details, but she doesn't look like she's about to go in detail about her personal life...

Just when you're thinking of a follow-up, she asks: "What about you?"

"What ABOUT me?" You echo.

She lifts an eyebrow. "You're gambling on that?"

"...Why won't she talk to me directly?" You ask her.

You see her face twitch.

A few seconds of deafening silence pass, with her eyes fixed inside yours. Neither of you blinks.

"Why won't she talk to me directly?" You repeat.

Feurdelis snaps an angry gesture, and a skeleton butler picks up the teapot and empty cups, including Millian's still-full cup.

He cleans up the table, while you and the Abyssal stare into each other's eyes from across the table. Once it's cleaned up, the undead worker walks out of the tent.

"Why won't she talk to me directly?" You ask again. "Why the charade?"

She stands up, and turns her back to you.

"The army is just here so I wouldn't ignore her. You're just showing your muscles. You don't have any intention to invade."

She slowly walks away from you and the table.

"This fort has just a bunch of skeleton footsoldiers, despite being your advance base. You don't have any artillery or siege engines on the frontlines. If you have them, you're keeping them deep in reserve. Even if you intended to assault Tianna, you're not ready to march on the city walls as soon as the hostage exchange is done."

She steps out of the tent's flaps.

"And the hostage exchange is to make sure I wouldn't run away. To force me to seek her.

You stand up as well.

"And you're getting in my way, you're doing all the talking... because she can't. She can't talk to me directly."

You leave the tent as well. She's standing in front of you.

"That's the only way it can all make sense. She wants my help, but she can't ask for it. Why? Is it pride? Spies? An oath? A test? Why is it? Why won't she talk to me directly?"

Feurdelis does something you didn't expect at all.

You don't give her an answer, sustaining her crazed glare.

She leans closer and closer, finally coming in contact, lip to lip, stealing a light kiss from you.

Then, she pulls away from you with a jolt, like you had just punched her. Her composure finally and entirely lost, she grabs her head with both hands, shaking and shivering as she takes a few hesitant steps away from you.

"...Go away." She mumbles, wincing like she's in horrible pain, hands clenched around her head so hard it looks like she's trying to crush her own skull. "GO AWAY!"

Your cart is parked in the center of the fort, and you notice the skeletons have opened the other gate of the fortress, on the opposite side from where you entered. You can see through it, parked on a distant hill, a dark, metallic shape.

The Black Omen.

You step back on the cart, grab the reins, and wait for Tia, Millian and Reken to join you.

But there's something sill nagging you.

You motion to them to wait, step down, and walk up to Feurdelis, who seems to be slowly recovering from her fit.

"Feurdelis." You touch her lightly.

"WHAT?" Her voice is cracked. she jolts around, staring at you. One of her pupils is black and wide while the other is a pinprick in the middle of a large iris glowing a deep blood red.

"...Someone told me something once." You start.

Suddenly, she calms down, and straightens up.

"He said that no evil born of a human heart is beyond redemption. That no darkness born of a human soul is too bleak for light."

She starts shivering.

"He said that that's why the gift of Exaltation was given to the human race."

She sniffs, and gives you a light nod, as if to acknowledge your words. You get no reply, but you see her eyes going back to normal.

She turns away from you. "...Go away." She says then, now in her original voice, before walking back into her tent.

"...I don't get it."

Millian, who has regained some of her complexion, can't seem to get over what happened.

You're riding down the road leading up to the Black Omen. You're in full-blown Skeleton Country, with armies, patrols, tents and camps of undead all around you. By now, even the maid has gotten used to it.

"I don't either." Tia is just as confused. "What's going on?"

"Think about it." You try to explain. "The only reason the Tyrant could have for all this mess is if she wants us to do something, but can't tell us explicitly."

"Assuming Feurdelis didn't lie?" Millian asks.

"Assuming Feurdelis didn't lie." You concede.

"Can you tell when people lie?"

"Haven't figured out that trick yet." You admit. "I'm mostly guessing."

"So what's the big question here?" Tia wonders.

"What she wants Maka to do? Why she can't ask in a straightforward way? What she needs Tianna for?" Millian wonders.

"If you could pick only one question to get an answer to, what would that be?" Reken asks.

Is that just a provocation, or something more?

"Only one?" You mumble. "...Either what she wants from me... or why she can't ask me... but..."

She leans closer, intrigued.

"...What kind of person she is? Tyrant, I mean."

Reken leans back, thoughtful.

"...She's..." She begins. "She's proud. And therefore she's honest. She has noblesse oblige. She demands respect, and expects it." She looks up, at the sky. "She has no mercy, but she isn't needlessly cruel. She's strong, and respects strength. She loves ambition, but hates selfishness and pettiness. And she hates betrayers beyond all else."

"Accurate." A new voice from in front of the cart suddenly replies.

Out of nowhere, a young woman with pale skin and an elegant yet exotic white dress. She's standing on the back of your horse, as if weightless. A veil half-cover her face and a blue flame dances out of her hairpin, in the shape of a black flower. Millian shrieks in surprise.

Tia silently draws Skullopener.

The woman bows slightly. "Maka and Tia, right?"

"Been a while, Speaker." Reken introduces her. "This is Speaker to the Dead."

She gives a second bow, this time a lot more formal.

"Nice to meet you." You say, trying to not sound too sarcastic. "To what I owe the pleasure?"

"Oh, I'm mostly just here because I'm curious about the Titan."

Millian and Tia turn to you, both looking quite confused.

"...Titan?" The Lunar asks. You see her frowning, the word leaving an unpleasant taste in her mouth.

Then, she falls silent, bringing her hand to the forehead. Thinking. "...Why..."

"...Why does sound familiar?"

anything that has every appeared in the charms list to vote for is eligible for voting on, its just that EF doesn't always have the space or time to go and retype each one, so if it appeared last thread like it did, you can vote on it this thread
>>
>>36816738
We also want to save up for Social 5 since last thread EF said that would let us get UCS as a mentor by spending the background dots.
>>
>>36816738
>>36816753
I mean I still want E-CSJ, but I meant save the other 11 points

>Maka wearing panties

Heresy
>>
>>36816764
Yeah, and like we said last thread, our priorities right now are on the charms immensely useful to us, after we get these two, if we need to get AST, then we save for Soc 5
>>

That's okay, well either way they are amazing and I appreciate the work.
>>
Good art! I'll leave for a bit now, but i'll be back and online on IRC/twitter/ask.fm in a couple hours.
>>
>>36816937
Thanks for the thread boss
>>
>>36816937
Are we banking the XP or spending it? This thread won't be alive by the time you get back.
>>
>>36816770
Amazing
>>
>>36816991
It looks like we bought at least ECSJ, but I'm not sure about the rest.
>>
>>36817020
yeah I'm pretty sure w bought that, and are banking the remaining 11xp for AST if we need it
>>
>>36816630
Speaker for the Dead would be their Moonshadow I guess?
>>
For the record, i'm voting for banking it to get Social 5.
>>
>>36817371

What are going to get with Social 5, anyway?
>>
>>36817478
Increasing Soc gives us an equal amount of dots to put into backgrounds, EF mentioned the thread before that we could use all five to get UCS as our Mentor.

We also get an extra dice and Maka becomes prettier, like way pretty, at Soc 5 Maka is like one of the most beautiful people in all of Creation.
>>
>>36817533

Oh no, I know that. Sorry, bad wording on my part.

I meant what will we use the bonuses from Social 5 for? Will we really spend it on Mentor UCS?
>>
>>36817533
Pshhhh...creation?

At Social 5 she'll rival gods, fey, demons and ghosts.
>>
>>36817371
For the record, I'm voting against that. +5 background points, +1 die to social checks, and +1 social damage is good. There's absolutely no denying that.

It's something we ABSOLUTELY SHOULD get at some point.

But for the situation we're in right now, we could buy 2.5 Zenith charms with that 20 XP. 2.5 Zenith charms will be WILDLY more helpful against these Abyssals and this Deathlord than those bonuses listed above.

I'm all for getting Social 5 when we're not staring down the barrel of an Underworld war machine. But it's just not even remotely worth it until then. Not compared to getting ECSJ, AST, and another half charm on top of them.
>>
>>36817575
Im-fucking-plying.

Fae Diplomats are statted at 7 Appearance, that'd be Social 7.
>>
>>36817575
>At Social 5 she'll rival gods, fey, demons and ghosts.
At Social 5, she'll be HILARIOUSLY better than most gods, fae, demons, and ghosts. She's ALREADY better than most of them.
>>
>>36817572
It's what people really want, I'm not really against it one way or the other.

Is there something else you have in mind?
>>
>>36817594
At 5 anything you're better than 99% of creation. At EXALTATION you're better than 99% of everything.
>>
>>36817533
>We also get an extra dice and Maka becomes prettier, like way pretty, at Soc 5 Maka is like one of the most beautiful people in all of Creation.
I'm honestly more excited about this part than I am about the 5 background dots.

I really enjoy hearing what people in the quest think about Maka and this is one of those things that would make that interesting.
>>
It's not a priority right now obviously, but I really want to get Terrifying Glorious Presence after we get Soc 5, I really like the idea of Maka being THE Social Person in Creation, just squeezing out every little bit we can is kind of fun to me.

>Social 5 + Zenith 5 + 1 Success + Bonus die for actions in Pearl + Social Artifact
It's mostly just daydreams of course.
