REV UP THOSE EVOLUTIONS!

It's time to get those critters 'volving!

This thread's current forecast?
A freezing ice age and low populations.

Table of Misfortune: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1CKg7H6g3sTO1yVji7iLDAcSfY5GRhlvSHfp5du9WHCs/edit?usp=sharing

How to play:
• Open an image of a species in MS Paint, or your editor of choice
• Make one evolutionary change to that species
• Save as .PNG!
• Post your new species in the thread with a description of what evolution you've added and why

Notes:
• Unless stated explicitly, no species ever goes extinct. Old species can still evolve, even if they're not on the latest "chain"
• Try to make your evolutions gradual and realistic
•Don't do a thousand evolutions on a single creature by yourself, let the other Anons try
• Archived threads: >http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive.html?tags=Grombworld
Thread 2 got messed up on suptg >https://archive.moe/tg/thread/36761184/

Meanwhile, this particular line of the fennel as had little need to evolve up to this point. It was left so far in the dust that it hardly gets preyed upon anymore. It simply gained extra fins for better movements and relocated deeper in the ocean, into the chasms were It is out of everyone's way, lest other organisms decide it would be an easy meal compared to others. It mostly persists on scraps of plant matter that fall to the bottom.

Diverging from the first tallsat, those up north begin to loose their tails, giving them a minute resistance to temperature fluctuations. For the winter, this species escapes the cold by migrating as close to the equator as they possibly can. With so many of them together at once, this is when they breed.
Unlike their cousins across the sea to the south, the lack any sort of rigid support. Instead, they have a series of muscles bracing against each-other to support their weight.

Front limbs of the solidjaw become long and narrow, acing more as feelers that can still be used for scooting around the seafloor.

What's done can't be undone. There's no reason to be obsessed with eyes, especially in the ocean. There are way more esoteric and exciting sensory options, and making an ever more sensitive touch was definitely an option. It was already headed that direction. C'est la vie, whatever, I just think it's a shame that something that was already blind is starting the eye game so many millions of years after.

Mayhem is activated.

You thought it was cold before? Permafrost covers the world. Anything subterranean better get used to it. The seas shrink dramatically as ice continents form. Tropical zones are the only places that have any season that isn't winter. Cloud cover is common, blizzards are regular, and every form is life is going batshit crazy.

It used to be that only the yellow flying fennets with membranes would be part of the pack. Mutants without useable glide-wings were left to starve. With the world becoming ever colder, it is only the yellow fennets with the smallest surface area and thickest coats that live to hunt. Now it is those with complete wings that taste death: at the cannibalistic opportunism of the new order.

This new species, furnets, still have pack tendencies and still try to attack their prey from above in powerful leaps using their legs and tail to launch themselves from the snowbanks.

(Can someone with some artistic ability draw these guys in a simplistic, easy-to-edit way but with a quadrapedal ground stance?)
>>

As things get colder, more and more deep sea life crowds around the volcanic vents, including the Welaks. To survive in this dense gathering of predators, the Welaks evolve the ability to live in waters too hot for other species to survive.

Sun Grombs more than double in overall size. The ones that can reproduce over the greatest height also reproduce over the greatest area, and end up hitting more viable spots than smaller rivals. Larger leaves are selected for in colder weathers, and those that produce the most light do the best in every possible way.

>>36841995
Massive regression takes places in a small group of the Air Grombs. Countless specimens do not survive the colder periods for more than a short period of time, even as they try to remain buried. Only those that are able to grow quickly, with the side-effect of being less advanced, are able to reach a stage of reproduction before they inevitably die to the bitter cold and ground-based herbivores.

Large twisting networks of roots become feeble and small, as water is no longer as rare as it was during the drought. Any sensory abilities atrophy and are lost. Even the inflated section of the Air Gromb has become smaller, no longer enough to get this species of the ground, let alone keep it aloft.

Yet it still has found a strange use for its gas bladder. It is the only exposed part of the Gromb visible above and is often approached by herbivores. If a tear or a hole is made in the gas bladder, all of the gas immediately rushes out of it in a disorientating blast, usually enough to stun small creatures for a matter of seconds. The danger side-effect of this is the loud bang it creates, alerting any nearby predators to the presence of the herbivore.

This atrophied version of the Air Gromb, known as the 'Bomb Gromb,' is a spiteful little plant.

The snowball kerp develops mechanoreceptory organs known as Slit sensilla in its exoskeleton including its spikes which detect strain due to forces experienced by the snowball kerp.
Though barely visible, they are small grooves in the exoskeleton which deforms under stress, and these deformations are detected by neurons.
This allows the snowball kerp to detect when it is being stepped upon and burst out of the snow, and attack its victim regardless of identity. It's spikes have changed color to better blend in with the appearance of the ice covering the landscape.
As snow falls down, even the exposed body of the buried kerp is covered often simply leaving the tips of its spikes visible.

Seeker fennets have a unique strategy for avoiding the freezing, dangerous surface: they just never land. Using their sensitive heat vision, they use the biggest, hottest thermals to glide aloft in order to rest their limbs. Those with the biggest limbs do the best at this, and attract the most mates due to flagging displays.

Higher body size and more intensive locomotion has a serious drawback in that more food is required. This results in seekers being even more aggressive about creating, maintaining, and invading territory in their quest for food. Anything that stands out heat-wise, color-wise, or movement-wise will cause a seeker fennet to guage that thing's known deliciousness against the ease of capturing it and the seeker's own level of desperate hunger.

A small seeker invading the wrong airspace can become easy prey for larger seekers, who get a quick meal and one less upstart to worry about. All of this cold, effort, feeding, and frenzy fuels another arms race in the seeker's overall size.

Watch the skies! Danger lurks among the clouds!

Certain breeds of the Gulper grow ever more interested in the lights beyond the ocean surface. These hermaphroditic creatures lay their eggs of shallow coastal water, where they choose areas of mud and slush to make their nests. These eggs hatch from the muck to become tadpoles, gnawing upon shallow-water grombs with a lucky few developing into adolescents.

Adolescents of this species heave themselves on to the frozen surface of icebergs or coastal ice, sucking in the air so greedily that they are now known as Gaspers. These Gaspers aren't the stealthiest creatures with their heavy breathing, nor are they adept at running from prey as they move mostly by flopping about and dragging themselves with their pitiful fore-limbs. This is why they always stay close to the coastline, able to flop into the water whenever they need be and hide amongst the muck. Similarly, when they need to get away from shallow water predators, they heave themselves on to land.

They're also oddly territorial. Should one Gasper ever find another Gasper feeding, it's more than likely that they'll try to wrestle its counterpart away from the Glow Gromb or Bomb Gromb they're chewing at, spending hours trying to shove and nudge them back into the water. The loser of these fights has to struggle to crawl back on to land and by the time they return to their meal, the voracious victor has usually eaten every last trace and moved on.

A much earlier version of the Walek (The one just before the head on shot). Develops an interesting adaptation for survival. It begins to prey upon its more evolved kin. (This was caused by a lack of some of its food source dying from the cold and the rage inducing global event).

Now able to discern color, it's eyes looks for the bright green color of it's much larger descendant's female specimens. Upon finding them, It will latch on to the unprotected side of the creature with its fin arm things, hanging on to the side of it for some time.
The larger more evolved Waleks will often disregard it as a minor annoyance, or mistake it for a young of its own species and ignore it, often they are not able to reach the spot where it has latched on to remove it anyway.

After some time of clinging to the side of the host, It will bite into the side of the creature and begin feeding upon its bodily fluids. This provides a long-term food source. It will stay attached until the female dies. Where it will move on to another female.

With the more evolved walek's females now being targets and preyed upon, their numbers start to fall as there are not as many females to reproduce.

While one breed of Bomb Gromb seems to specialize in mitigating the disadvantages of its new development, another breed of Bomb Gromb seems to go out of its way to be suicidal, for the purposes of procreation.

Developing a layer of nutritious seeds on the outside of its gas bladder, this Bomb Gromb deflates even more violently when it is ruptured. It bursts like a balloon, scattering fragments of the bladder along with the seeds in the nearby area. This results in the quick death of the Bomb Gromb with its innards exposed to the freezing cold but it is a short-lived species anyway, quick to grow and quick to die in the frozen wasteland.

Only the gentlest herbivore is able to remove the seeds from the surface of the Bomb Gromb without creating a tear and being stunned by the explosive decompression of hydrogen in their face.

Eugh, posting late at night is a bad idea. Let me clarify something: there is no food in the hotter waters for the Waleks, so they have to go into the normal waters to kill things and eat them. The hot waters, like I said, are there so they have a safe place to breed and sleep, as well as a place for their weak younglings to grow up. After all, not getting killed yourself is an important step in crushing your enemies and driving them before you.

Most fennets are herbivore, except for the yellow flyers and some others.

Sats started herbivore, the gooish (right now ghostsat is the more recent) ones became omnivore, I think; and the red ones (waleks) are carnivore? I think.

Clawed sats are mostly diggers
Webbed ones live in floating grombs, up in the sky, and are sort of tribal.
Also, many sats have lips that close when pumped full with water

The few pholls that made it to land are parasitic, the rest is sealife

Don't know much about kerp, but they're carnivore, most of them. The ones with green tentacles use those to drug prey

We need the gromb chart updated, but pic related will do
The ones with the ball make hydrogen from water to float, the rest is explained on the chart.
The waterbowls with tunnels host flosats, since having the flosats not dehydrate used to be a thing. Now they are connected to digsat tunnels by the digsats themselves, and pump water around, and some have turned rogue and digest digsats that are pumped in. The cthulhu-looking one is full of little grombs growing inside, that will rip the mother and spread (this only happens on the latest stages)
The grey grombs take nutrienst from the volcanic depths

To in response to their parasitic cousins, the more evolved Welaks develop larger eyes with better definition and color perception. This helps them against all predators and prey, but especially the Parawelaks, who are now much easier to distinguish from their own young. On their part, the Parawelaks split into two groups: one evolves the same coloration and heat resistance as its more evolved kin, and the other fleshy arms for grasping. The former is better at preying on female Welaks, but the latter pursues a wider range of victims and pursues them well. However, this puts them into competition with Parasitic Pholls, one of which has developed a broad tail for greater speed and the other a longer, thicker proboscis to penetrate its victims.

Bomb grombs that live near iron pyrite deposits will take the pieces up their roots through capillary action, then deposit them in the gas bladder. Now, when ruptured, the pyrite will spark against the small pieces of flint.

This is not good for the nearby herbivore.

The hydrogen ignites, launching a stream of flames into the face of the nearby animal that dared to attack the Hindengromb

>>36853770
I can see problems though, namely untimely explosions. Won't this really risk the population of the species, as I doubt there will never be a situation where a plant just exploded due to bad luck. Also, couldn't these explosions chain if several plants are near one another? Seems like a very risky evaluation, but interesting because of it.
>>
>>36854008
Previous species of the Bomb Gromb also violently deflate when ruptured - just in a burst of gas and/or seeds, depending on the breed. Not fire, as is the case with this one.

All previous breeds would be likely to explode accidentally at times but I think a chain reaction would only be possible with this one, due to the fact that they're somehow filled with naturally occurring hydrogen.
>>
>>36854087
My main though is that the explosions will be a lot more frequent now considering how volatile the reaction between hydrogen and oxygen is. Surely it would make more sense if only a few of the Bomb Grombs evolved to have this explosive trait, therefore deterring animals because they don't know if this pant could kill them.

Thinking about it, wouldn't other plants evolve to look like the Bomb Gromb for the same effect? IIRC there's a plant which mimics stinging nettles for the same purpose of scaring away animals who have learned not to approach nettles.

I think there's a lot of weaknesses in this evaluation to be honest, I and think other animals will evolve to exploit them soon.
>>
>>36854008
A continent of hindengrombs suddenly going off in a massive chain reaction could be the fluff behind the next shift.

I am on a phone so I can't draw, but I had an idea for a behavioral evolution. Would that need to be drawn? Basically, surviving Flying Fennets and Seeker Fennets begin grabbing tiny, sharp rocks and dropping them in hindengromb fields to warm their environment for a time and take down large prey with little fuss. This makes thermals to extend flight time with and makes hunts easier.
>>
>>36854348
You would need to draw the rocks

Furthermore its single eye develops slightly to cope with the brighter lights above the surface.

Figured it was them noticing the explosions and free meat when things tried eating these things leading to them going "hey, these make hunting really easy, I like these plants", and then as creatures stopped trying to eat them, just enough brain activity began for them to try popping the bubble themselves when things got near.

Reminder that those kerps die soon after laying their eggs, becoming more food for their larva. Got a nice little fluff piece for them. After mating, the female's final meal is more often than not her mate.

According to Google, a world sans plate tectonics would mean no landmasses. Thus, no terrestrial life. If any life managed to survive, it'd have to all be aquatic.
>>
Mars doesn't have any tectonic movements, that is why it has those huge volcanoes. Still, it had water collected in the lowlands and craters, that stay longer around, as there are no eroding tectonics. Of course we don't know if life is there or was on Mars, but on a similar planet it could still work - given it has protection from charged particles, uv etc.

Also does anybody else experience the problem with the new captcha that it overlays the 'upload a picture' button? How do I fix this?

After many generations, Flamboyant Sats develop hoarding tendencies, with the strange habit of collecting shiny minerals, such as gold.

Sats develop black apendages on their heads, used to store said objects, and hairy tufts in the sides to protect it from freezing.

A beneficial mutation has set one ghostsat strain above the rest.

The mutation, warping of the outer memberane that was more sensitive to vibrations than normal, allowed the Phantomsat to better locate their prey.

The shivering habit of their cousins the ghostsat and the ice-breaking tendencies of the 'Icebreaker Fenish' cause them to be preferred prey among the Phantoms

No slackers, the Levipholls have been evolving as well. The Necked Levipholl has developed a different color of luminescents; prey has grown wise to the shade of the other Levipholls' lights, and this makes it easier for the species to differentiate each other for mating purposes. The Complex Jawed Levipholl evolves another set of webs so that it may pursue prey and escape any foes it can't fight head-on with greater speed. The Giant Gulper Levipholl develops an even larger mouth to swallow more and even larger prey.

>>36867010
(Secondary evolution since this one hasn't been touched in a long time, might do a third before I pass out if thats acceptable)

The Phantom Sats revolutionary hunting method has lead to a new strain rising to prominence.

Sounds attract many Phantoms to prey, and then the Phantoms become prey themselves to other Phantoms.

Phantomsat Feeding frenzies that grow ever larger until the icy sea churns with death has become a regular occurrence.

Because of this a more durable strain that shows signs of being able to heal from injury more rapidly than it's cousins has more often than not been the strain that survives long enough to breed, driving the older strain into recession simply by brute force.

I don't see these on the size chart. How big are they? And what do they eat?
>>
>>36868150
The smaller two are bigger than an Eyepholl (which is pretty big), and the larger is bigger still. They eat whatever they can kill, though the Giant Gulper specializes in swallowing schools of prey.
>>
>>36868221
I...don't know how big any of those are either, but it does help me decide what my next evolution should be at least. I was fiddle faddling about with it.
>>
>>36868294
The Giant Gulper is definitely the biggest creature alive right now, with the other Levipholli (that sounds more elegant than Levipholls) being the second largest. Eyepholls might be the third, though I'm not sure. That's one of the difficulties with evo threads: no hard scale.

>>36868003
Sometimes the regeneration does its job too well however.
A new strain has emerged from the continued mating of Durable Phantom Strains.

A slightly sluggish, bulbulous strain has grained a foothold despite it's slowness. It's flesh acts as a minor toxin that paralyzes imbibers, or kills in enough quantities.
Combined with it's regenerative nature, this means that the <Toxic Phantomsat> escapes combat even more regularly than it's cousins.

It's sluggishness thus far has kept it from dominance in the Sat Line, but who knows what the future holds

<Divergent Strain>
<mild paralytic, lethal in high quantities>

That's some nasty shit, we're turning into a proper 40k-style deathworld here. What level of the ocean do they occupy? The Levipholli occupy only the deeps, and you won't find Eyepholli outside of the Seagromb forests, so there's a chance none of the Webbed Pholl line will be effected.

The Molesats have grown hairier and hairier, and now you can say that they are truly furry; a useful asset in this cold as balls age!

If someone could touch up the drawing to make them look furry without it being shit, that would be cool.

>>
>>36869128
From the early diagram the Ghostsat seemed to be mid level, so I'm going to say that the phantomsat (and any divergent strains) generally stay mid level to surface level.

There has been a general edge towards the surface for them as the Icebreakers have become favored prey (i.e. easy to find because of their practices making a lot of noise)

Might find a handful in the low zones too I guess.

>>36841995

Air Gromb have semi-rigid structures. The middle portion is water storage. And the roots are like ROOTS.
>>
>>36869901
Imma fluff this change.

A period of volcanic activity pumps CO2 and various other gasses into the atmosphere, trapping some extra heat from the sun. Over time, this causes the surface temperatures to warm back up close to former levels.
>>
>>36870149
I'm going to stop you right there because that's boring.

One fine day, firebomb grombs are chilling and maxing out. This particular bomb gromb forest is hundreds of miles across. And then a Tallsat wanders in and squats over one. It takes a big, lazy bite, and boom! There is no more Tallsat. There is a column of fire, as firebomb grombs set off their close neighbors. Smoke piles into the air. Ground is scorched. Firebomb grombs spread such an inferno, even the hardy gaseous bomb grombs begin to burst, the hydrogen launching embers high into the air. Some air grombs flame up, some embers fall into other forests, and vegetative life crumbles away. Sun glombs begin to go off, adding to the flames, which stretch and spread for months across a minor continent. Sats die in droves, killing off their predators that can't make it across the channels to other islands and other continents.

This cataclysmic fire vomits up ashen clouds that become a greenhouse, trapping in solar heat. The long winters break. Summer returns to a world that has forgotten what summer is like. Four months out of the year, the snow is melting away. Permafrost draws back. Even the shorelines begin to creep up once more. By happenstance and the sacrifice of millions of lives, an iced over world begins to thaw.

Some of the bomb grombs manage to survive this inferno. Those that sealed away their bladder from their roots had the best, slight chance of survival. And those that had mutated particularly hardy seeds found that, after the fire had left, ashen ground grew plants fairly well. Whenever another forest fire is sparked, the Hardy Bombomb plants will rise from the ashes like so many phoenix.

Careful Now, we don't want to render this world uninhabtable by evolutionary exterminatus
>>
>>36870416
Makes sense. In Fortune Evo we had a similar plant. Grasslands and prairies rely on a steady cycle of burning to keep them from turning into forests, and an exploding gromb could take the place of lightning strikes. Granted, there aren't any grass-like species on this planet at the moment, but just something a guy named ecology fag taught us.

Ha ha, now I've done it.

The rising temperatures and abundance of food has caused a shift in Phantomsat behavior. Just like their ancestors suddenly became more violent they return to their original docile, social nature with the warmth.

Phantomsat and Ghost Sat strains of all kinds can be seen moving together in groups for hunting and living, and feeding frenzies are mostly limited to non Sat prey instead of wanton cannibalisim

The humble albino mud kerp has for many generations now, fufilled an important niche in circle of life...as food. This position has not changed, but they have become increasingly social and family oriented. This carries out to extended family members. However they are xenophobic to foreign mudkerps a majority of the time. On occasion when there is an imbalance of breeding mudkerps individuals will be exiled from the community and wander in search of a new family. They often do not make it past the nest.

The generations of isolation in some areas of the mudflats have lead to two very separate breeds of Albino Mudkerp. The Nomand and the pile kerps. With two very different behaviors.

Nomads are stronger, having a longer endurance and a looser family bond. They will travel in packs and can sometimes even fend off larger predators. They are opportunistic eaters, foraging detritus, carrion, or those too weak to fight back effectively.

The Pilekerps build large mud mounds which contain an elaborate network of large rooms and small "hallways". An interesting behavior is the peaking action, where a kerp will dig a small hole and look out of it to observe for outside threats.

Nomads and pilekerps are mutually antagonistic when in the same territory.

and an evo.

The diversification between the two mudkerps continues. The mudpile kerps tentacle clubs become more scoop like in nature, facilitating in digging, while their tail acts as a broom to sweep away dirt behind them.

The Nomadic mudkerp adds on a bit of brutish hulk as only the strong have survived living out in the open, consequently predators of the mudkerp now have a choice.

Attack a herd of nomads and risk their tiny fury, or go digging in the mud after the pile kerp.

Yes you can. You just have to be reasonable and let the past stay in the past. It takes absolutely zero effort to NOT post something.

>>36871290
Anonymity in the 4chan persists exactly because it is the perfect situation to "vent frustrations". By which you mean, post what I really think without filters and passiveness that are required in public society. But no. No one would punch someone else in the mouth because they point out other people are derailing a game to talk about ones that are long over. This is like going to a D&D game and not shutting up about the V:TM session a couple of the other players had last month. It's rude, it undermines the tone, and it crowds out the ability to actually play the game that's going on now. Fuck yourself and fuck your entitlement. You should have fun on the way out by playing the game that we're actually doing.

>>36871270
How convenient for you that anything you don't like is posting by one person you can completely dismiss. You will forever be a newfag with habits like that. You should respond to every post according to its sole content, and not what you believe to be happening behind the Anonymous name, neither in identity nor trend. >>
>>36874436
They don't have to reminiscence about it in the game that they are currently playing. That is not a right they have. That is not a natural cause and effect occurrence. It is not remotely as inevitable as you're trying to make it sound. And by taking up image slots, and by CONTINUOUSLY posting critters and reaction images from that game, the unique direction of this one is being tugged into line with that one and the ability to play is hampered. Less slots mean less on-topic images. THAT is an inevitable effect determined directly by a simple cause.

Autosage on /tg/ means the game probably still has 10 hours of life before it falls off the board. It does not mean we need a new thread immediately and it definitely does not mean it's time to be off-topic or time to start shitposting. You are being wholly (and I believe intentionally) intellectually dishonest right now. You have no justification for what's happening. You just have excuses about why it's not as bad. If you don't have a reason to do something, why would you do it?
