Last time:

Traveling back to Jay City was put on pause for a moment while you, Dani, and Nick investigated the cheering and excitement of a small crowd of trainers. Getting closer, you found a young man about your age and a Pancham in the middle of the fistfight. A bit uncomfortable but otherwise seeing no place to say anything, you asked about the two fighters a bit. It was explained to you that the Pancham was newly an orphan, and the trainer was beating it senseless on a sort of bet.

The match was plainly uneven, ending with a battered Pancham to be left in the dirt. You saw to the Monster medically while Dani challenged the young man to a fistfight. She proceeded to kick his ass before getting a handful of dirt thrown in her eyes. You laid the dirty cheat out with a punch. You and Nick then tended to Dani, considering what to do next.

“Hey, Nick?” the blonde looks over at you, plainly. “Would you mind calling this whole thing in to a ranger or something? I’m thinking this was abuse enough to be reported.”

The narrowing of his eyes and that lopsided twist to his mouth means he’s thinking it over. You understand him to be relatively pragmatic, and calling the authorities after you just punched a guy seems like anything but pragmatic. Still, you’re confident enough that you won’t get in serious trouble. Maybe a yellow card at the worst, yeah, but napping dickhead over there will get it worse for abusing an infant Pokemon. The authorities take that shit seriously.

Nick must trust your judgment, because he flips open the phone on his wrist before ticking off a quick request or report. There’s a moment before he turns back to you, saying that “they’ll be here in approximately eight minutes. How’s Dani?”

You’re surprised he asked. You turn back to your girlfriend, still dabbing a wet cloth at her eyes. “How’re you holding up? Still in pain? Want Nereid to try washing it out?”

Dani nods in between wincing. “Yeah, that, uh, that may be a good idea. I got most of it, I think, but fuck if it doesn’t still hurt really bad, Grey.” A pained sigh and her fingers go white-knuckled around the water bottle. “I seriously, really, really hope you punched him hard, Grey. What an ass!”

“I did, but it probably wasn’t as good as you kicking his shit in some more. Come here, let’s move you against a tree.” Your hands find purchase under Dani’s arms and you help her get to her feet before leading her to a tree. You ease her down with a “just relax, okay? He’ll be out for a while and a Ranger or something will be here soon.”

You then call out Nereid and, with Mittens's help, explain the situation and how the little weasel can help Dani. They both readily agree, to your relief and pride, and you give them each a small treat and a pat on the head.

According to your watch it’s only seven minutes when you look to the horizon and see a small, fast-moving shape in the distance. Judging by the gait, color, and speed it’s an Arcanine, moving about sixty miles an hour or so.

The beast of a lion-dog comes to a quick, dusty stop a few paces past your group. The Ranger, a middle-aged man with tan skin and a serious face behind his visor, quickly dismounts and jogs on over to Tyler. He consults with the groupie, nodding along and asking a few questions before checking Tyler’s pulse, his eyes, asking him some questions… Turns out he had woken up at some time shortly after you punched him, which is good; he seemed too groggy to move or really do anything though.

You watch as the Ranger pulls out a Pokeball and calls out a Grumpig. With a few commands the Grumpig starts sifting through the memories of Tyler and his friend. Then the Ranger makes his way over to you.

“Alright: I’m aware that one of you is the one that made the report. I’d like to quickly go over someone’s memories of the scene and then get a couple accounts out of you all. Then we’ll talk about possible punishments for anyone that violated the law. Sound fair?”

“Yeah,” you stand up, brush off, and present yourself to the Grumpig. “That sounds fair. You can go over my memories of the scene.” The Ranger nods before giving a quick whistle to the Grumpig.

The ‘Mon closes its eyes and you feel an intrusion in your mind: not as subtle, gentle, or friendly as Mittens. No, this visitor is cold, calculating, and deliberate. You’re not quite aware of what the Grumpig is looking at, but it doesn’t seem to be anything particularly deep or powerful emotionally. The whole process takes but a few seconds before the intrusion leaves. You open your eyes.

The Grumpig comes to regard its trainer, and the Ranger silently nods and gestures to it before turning back to you. “Alright, yeah. There was definitely Pokemon abuse going on: one of you has the Pancham, yes?” you nod. “And you intend to care for it?” Again, you nod.

“Alright, well fella’ over there will be getting a point deduction for statutory Pokemon abuse.” He gestures curtly with his thumb, but then points at your chest, a bit of mirth in his voice. “You, my friend, will be getting a small point deduction yourself. Can’t have people punching out folks here and there, alright?” You nod, slowly, trying to resist showing your frustration on your face.

“Don’t worry, Sortie. It’s practically just a formality: a couple points…” He pulls up a pad, scrolling through some information. “Let me see your card?” You dig it out and hand it to him.

He swipes and then watches as the information loads up on his screen. “Aw, shit, yeah you won’t be missing a couple points!” He starts laughing. “Might even have to get yer autograph, huh? Mr. Top Ten!” More good-natured laughter on his part.

The Ranger’s laughter is, granted, infectious and you soon find yourself chuckling a bit along with him. You insist that you’ll “have to sign an autograph next time, I’ll have a marker and paper ready for you.”

Thoughts of a “next time” roll through your head and what was once mirth turns sour. Seeing another trainer beat their Pokemon? Seeing abuse like this again? Your smile straightens out, and internally you wish you could punch Tyler again. You try to grab the Ranger’s attention again as he walks back towards his Arcanine.

“Hey, actually? How often does this kind of thing happen?” The Ranger looks up from his E-Pad at you, the unspoken question on his face. “You know, Trainers beating Pokemon…? Pokemon abuse? I ask because, depending on your answer, you may be seeing me again.”

The Ranger seems torn between smiling and frowning; like his face can’t decide which so he does both at the same time. “T’tell you the truth, Sortie? It happens frequently enough for me to be unhappy about it, but most of the time you don’t see it.” You both nod, a touch grimly, at that. “Don’t worry, though: we almost always catch it. And ‘Mons are pretty tough, and people learn to respect them. Even some of the worst offenders, you catch me?”

Another question springs to mind. “Hey, another thing? Should I maybe expect another Pancham around here? How many are usually in a litter?”

The Ranger sets a finger to his stubble, scratching about with a slight pucker to his lips. His eyes search the forest line, as if another Pancham might come waddling out at any second. “Eh, well, one to two is usual. It’d probably be near the mother, or… Oh, wait. Yeah, I don’t remember seeing another in that kid, Tyler’s, memory. No worries.” That’s a relief.

Dani’s able to get back to walking without assistance, her eyes cleared of debris with Nereid’s help, and then you and Nick argue over the map a bit. Nick insists on cutting through the finger of woods between you and Jay City, but you maintain that keeping to the development will be just as fast and put you near the East main train station. From there you can quickly reach any wing of the City.

The three of you settle on cutting through the forest; you’re willing to give Nick this point, even though you doubt it’s faster at all, and he exhibits a bit of gratefulness in response. Only a bit, though.

A couple things of note happen during the trek: The first, to everyone’s excitement, is the hatching of the Yanma egg that Dani was carrying around! Dani had been carrying it in her pack when she felt a wriggling sensation coming from within. She pulled it out and the three of you, plus Mittens, watched as a dragonfly about your foot in size crawled out. It seemed to regard Dani pretty well (though you doubt on any sort of imprinting, personally) and she caught it without much fuss.

The second thing was a number of sizable, loud explosions ahead of you. Always looking for excitement, you and Nick couldn’t resist working your way over to where the disturbances issued from. You found a lot of knocked down, singed trees, and made out a couple large, flying forms over the trees.

Between the three of you, Dani was the only one able to get a lock with her Dex. Stats and information came up, but the species name certainly surprised you: Noivern. They usually stick to areas near caves or structures, not open forests.

Another series of blasts, and after the ringing in your ears stopped you could hear the shouting of a few Trainers, you imagine Rangers, coming from nearby. They had been taking cover, and you watched the six of them begin to move in unison, releasing their teams and seemingly trying to usher the Noivern deeper into the woods.

Such occurrences are common for Rangers: they try to keep the more dangerous ‘Mons away from the city.
Right now, you are most interested in the smaller forms that have dropped from the trees as a result of the attack. Based on the shape and noises coming from them, at least a couple may be Noibats.

There’s flamethrowers, boom bursts, and sonic attacks flying all over the place, so screw getting closer: you ask Dani if she wants to try and catch anything caught in the crossfire. She thinks about it, scrunching up her eyes and trying to get a better look at the forms lying in the grass.

A falling branch startles the three of you, and the screaming Aipom attached to it didn’t help either. Poor thing seems to have gotten the wind knocked out of it and is stuck under the branch. Nick calls “dibs on helping the little guy” before crouch-walking over. A flash later and you know the monkey's been caught.

Dani, a bit quicker this time, says to “catch me whatever you can reach, Grey. We should get out of here!” you agree and take aim at a winged form 30 yards away. It’s not moving, so you’re able to get a lock by creeping forward a bit.

Then you look around, seeing another form fall to the ground below: this one much more “fluffy” than the previous one and squirming about quite a bit. You get a lock on this ‘Mon as well before tossing one ball after another. Both are able to make their marks, so you and Dani dash out to collect.

A few minutes later and the three of you have sprinted far away from that battle. You clear the forest, and Jay City is just in sight. You and Dani looked at your “spoils” once you were out of danger. Between the two of you, a Noibat and a Whimsicott.

>Dani, you could use a strong flier, and you might as well add to your bat-collection.

Evolution stones aren't a concern in this setting, just an... option.

For example, Apollo is slowly turning into an Arcanine just fine. This could be rushed with a stone, but that would have drawbacks.

“Which do you prefer, Dani?”

“Hm?” Dani’s face took on a warm glow as you got closer to Jay City, eyes searching the skyline; pointing out billboards as you passed, Trainers flying in on Pokemon, the trains speeding by. When you speak up to her it snaps her out of this momentary magic, leaving only a bright, goofy smile in its wake.

“Which what, Grey?” You laugh at that bit of gibberish. “I mean, ‘what are you referring to, oh boyfriend of mine?’”

“The two Pokemon we just caught: which of them do you prefer? The Whimsicott or the Noibat?”

You and Dani talk about the two species, with her commenting that she thinks the Noibat is really cute and liking the idea of having two bats to watch after. You mention that you think her taking on a strong flier is a good idea. She agrees on this, and so you make the registration of the two official. Dani congratulates you and Nick on your Whsicott and Aipom, respetively.

Dani starts fantasizing about when her Noibat will be big enough to fly on, leading the two of you to daydream about flying around on your Pokemon someday soon. A funny little image of you, Grey, flying by on a Talonflame with long locks of hair flowing in the wind… You start laughing out loud.

Nick asks what’s so funny, and you tell him. In between laughs he calls you a “raging dumbass,” and then claims that if he could ride his Vivillon or his Scyther he’d pull off the long locks better.

That reminds you that firstly, you’re not that familiar with Nick’s team. Turns out he has a male Nidoran and a newly-emerged Vivillon in addition to his Fennekin, Geodude, and Grotle (Nick claims Sonny is a Grotle). Secondly, you never considered riding your Scyther as a mount. You need to see about getting a saddle!

You decide on catching a city bus over to the MedCenter and meeting up with Erica there. Better than having her strike out on foot alone and getting into trouble yet again.

Mittens rides in your lap, mentally humming, physically purring, and overall greatly enjoying the little ride around town. Nick suggests getting something to eat, which you and Dani both heartily agree with. Some quick snacks on the road staved off your hunger but a real meal would be great now that you’re in town. Otherwise, you ask about the Pancham and Nick’s Aipom. They’re both a little worse for wear, especially the Panda, but the rudimentary medical readings offered by your Dexes give hope that the Pancham will live and be alright.

You make it to the Trainer House and MedCenter quickly enough. Heading inside, you look around and see Elice’s familiar face at the front desk. She plays it cool, but her greeting this time around is a lot warmer than when you met her. Erica had been bunched up on a chair nearby, playing something on her phone. When she sees the three of you she runs on over and practically tackles Dani with a hug. The two of them turn into a giggling, shrieking little fit as Erica shows off her new badge and two new ‘mons that she managed to catch: a Trubbish (which smells like old wontons, for some reason) and a Wooper.

There’s a big round of celebrations, promises of partying it up, and asking about where she caught the two additions to her team. Apparently, her wandering brought her near a sewer/utility entrance or something.

“It smells… like, it smells bad, yeah… but there was a lot of activity down there.” That’s funny enough, and may warrant an investigation later. “Hey, it’s alright!” You look over to see Dani fondly smiling at the two of you. Nick just looks grumpy, as usual. You hug Erica a bit tighter and then end the embrace. “Everyone came out in one piece, and we caught a few of’em.” Erica follows you to the nurses’ station where you drop off your Whimsicott. “Speaking of which, we had a ‘spare,’ if you will. Do you want it?”

You rummage around in your pack until you find the dormant ball holding the fourth, unregistered Scyther.

“Uh,” Erica takes the Pokeball in her hands and looks at it warily. “Yeah, sure… Thanks, Grey.” Another big smile, and then a hug at your side. You’re not used to this much affection from so many people! “Maybe you can help me train it, though?” You agree to that and then suggest that Erica ask Dani and Nick what they want to do today.

That taken care of, you sit down at the main SILPHNet terminal in the Center and get to work going through your account. It’s empty, sure enough, and you ready a box for depositing two of your ‘Mons. Erica said that the gym involved water when she went, so Bonnie and Apollo seem like the best bets to put away. First, however, you draw them out and explain that you’re going to put them in stasis. Mittens helps you explain that it will be “painless,” and they “won’t notice a minute go by.”

The two of them seem a bit nervous, but some hugs and friendly scratching set them at ease. You say goodbye, which touches your heart in a sort of poignant way, and then upload them for Pokeballs and data for safekeeping.

Your friends all follow your lead, depositing the excess members of their teams for now. You investigate, asking about what they would like to do. Lunch, of course, comes up, but also…

The four of you decide on blowing through your hour-long wait with some lunch. You ask what everyone wants but Dani challenges everyone to a “first person to pick a place chooses it!” contest. There’s a bit of a race as everyone searches locally for someplace nice. You see an Asian-inspired restaurant, a gastro pub, and a good old-fashion grill pop up. You’re about to suggest Asian food when Nick yells out “Rusty Window!”

Dani and Erica start laughing, Erica behind her hand, and you can’t help but smile and pat Nick on the back. He seems taken aback, perhaps embarrassed that the just yelled out “Rusty Window” in the middle of a busy MedCenter waiting area. Erica asks him “what’s that, Nick?” and he explains it’s a chain place that serves lots of street-food standards. Sounds good, and everyone packs up and heads out.

You get a sort of “sampler” platter, with falaffle? Falawful? Dani eventually corrects your pronunciation of “falafel.” That was good for some laughs and left you embarrassed. Yeah, but anyways? It had falafel, chicken poppers, all sorts of crunchy veggies and dip… Delicious, and with everyone sharing their meals you had a lot to choose from and gorge yourself on.

Unfortunately, you also found that Mittens doesn’t handle spicy foods very well. Poor thing.

>>36858057

After collecting your ‘mons you head back out onto the street; it’s midday and there’s plenty to do. You had looked up some local favorite features on the bus ride to the Center and one thing that stood out to you was the Historic SILPH factory. It’s more exciting than it sounds: basically a living, breathing museum where you can get a sort of inside look into how various everyday objects are made and how technology has changed through history. They also have these tasting rooms of regional and international treats. It’s free, which is cool. You give a brief explanation and offer it up to the group. Everyone says it’s an interesting enough way to spend a couple hours and agree. Unfortunately, it’s on the north-central part of the City…

You turn, spotting a, well, a Gogoat vendor. You’ve never used one before but you’ve heard people recommending renting the large goats for intracity travel. You point it out to Nick and he brightens a bit at the sight. You ask him if he’s used one before.

“Shit; they’re pretty awesome, especially if you get an empty stretch of road and you get the chance to get it up to full speed.” You mention that’s unlikely for right now, and ask about getting from one place to another.

“Oh, yeah. Easy to direct, tough, smart. I’d say it beats the shit outta’ the bus.” Dani and Erica have no complaints, so you settle on renting four Gogoats for a nominal price, which Erica graciously covers as part of paying back her "debt."

On the back of your mighty green steed you make progress through the city at a swift “prance,” or something. It’s not a gallop, you know that. Anyways, you look at the bustling city around you, your grip tight on the ‘Mon’s horns and your legs squeezing like your mother’s crab leg-cracker. You haven’t had too much experiencing riding anything before, and you’re a bit nervous. If the gruff grunting of the Goat is any indication, it notices your unease.

>cont.
>>
>>36858091

When you finally step down in front of the factory it is with much relief. You silently thank the world for providing solid earth. You turn to the Gogoat, and the instructions of the vendor come to mind. You tell it to “wait,” and you know that it will until either nightfall or you tell it to return home.

That settled, you get a good look at the factory. The entrance is settled into a proud, mighty-looking façade. Rocks of various dark hues strike out against white marble. Above the huge doors, about twice as tall as you and easily twice as wide as that, is SILPH CO. in gold lettering. You snap a quick picture before looking around a bit more: Gargoyles and grotesques fill various places above windows and near gutters, all carved out in fiberstone and gilded to exaggerate their features.

It's not the tallest building in the area, but definitely one of the more beautiful ones. A melding of older styles and materials with newer ones, done up in a nice little package. It just screams SILPH.

Getting inside the factory you’re given the opportunity to scan your phone and retrieve some info about the building. It's apparently built on the ruins of a pre-Dark period building, and was one of the first buildings constructed in Jay City after the movement or return to above-ground living. A couple things about the architect, the SILPH founder, charity work,...

While you read through that, Dani and Erica take a look at the free digital map, complete with an audio tour.

They flick through your options…

“Nick? Hey, Nick, wake up!” Your newest companion found himself a nice little spot on the floor to fall asleep while you and the girls decided on where to go. In his defense, he looks exhausted. Sleep hangs at his eyes in black-purple puffs. His face is lacking a bit of its usual color, and his shoulders lay low in fatigue. “Hey man, why don’t you get a coffee with a stim-shot? They’ve got a Slowbucks right over there.”

Nick follows your gesture with his eyes, brightening a bit at the sight of the pink aprons and the blenders churning out the caffeinated lifeblood of workers everywhere. You’re pretty sure Slowbucks, replete with its Slow-poke inspired logo, is owned by SILPH, so it makes sense to have one here…

“Ya, sure… Sounds good. Feel asleep on the Goat, ‘myeah?” You nod and help him up. He trudges on over to get himself some liquid help.

You tell the girls that Nick will be right back and ask if they decided on anything. Turns out Dani really wants to see the section on Ancient Technologies, and Erica wants to see about the “Digital Beings” film and exhibits. Both sound good to you, so you tell them to go on ahead. You and Nick will catch up.

Heading back over to the coffee bar, you spy Nick leaning against the condiments cart, eyes half-lidded. Nick reminds you of long nights at the computer, angry and alone. Not sleeping, trying to find something in nothing. Training day and night, tearing yourself up internally… Nick’s mind is a mystery to you; you’re not sure if these images are just delusions on your part or accurate comparison, but you’d rather try and help him then never find out.

Whatever. You’re overthinking things again. You tap Nick on the shoulder, bringing him back with a jolt.

“Hey, man: the girls headed off. I told them we would catch up with them.” Nick idly nods but doesn’t say anything.

“I know you’re exhausted… why don’t we wait here? You can sleep somewhere around here and I’ll make sure nobody steals your stuff while we wait for the girls.”

Nick’s head doesn’t move, only his eyes. There’s a bit of movement on his brow and cheek: he’s thinking of something? Wondering if you’re playing him, maybe?

“Nahman…” It’s hard to hear him with his face smashed into his arm like that. “Thas’tupid…” he yawns, then begins again but more clearly. “Nah, that’s stupid. We came here to, fuckin' see shit… Not sleep. You go on ahead. I’ll hang out here.” You nod and shrug, unsure of what to do. “Oh, hey… Can I get a favor?”

“Yeah, sure. What’s up?”

“Can you give me Erica’s number?”

You laugh a bit and pull your phone out. “Uh, sure… Why do you need it, though?” He gives you a measuring glance again, jaw clenching uneasily. “Just curious.”

“I think she’s cute. Was hoping I could get her to tell me what you guys were looking at.”

“Oh.”

You're glad you came here... This is some interesting shit!

There's plenty of interesting stuff to check out here from pre-Dark times, too. Many decades ago, people had to survive. They also warred constantly. You check out an old phone that soldiers allegedly used because it was almost indestructible. Anthropologists claim that by cross-referencing other sources they discovered that militaries used these phones and printed “No KIA” on them. Apparently, they were used to phone back to your superiors or whatever and tell them you were still alive.

Then there’s exhibits on the energy and water wars. Behind a thick glass panel is a car used by people on a daily basis; over usage of such cars caused people to get fat and burn through “gasoline,” or petroleum as a fuel source. You look down at the mottled, faded-red of a “gas can.” A little sigh escapes your lips at the sight. Life used to be so different! Fighting over energy and clean water, struggling to get food… How did people live in those days?

You’re asking yourself that question again as you pass exhibits on “Cubeculls,” where they would send excess people to die; “Re-Clines,” which scientists believe were small chairs that simulated specific environments, making people more comfortable in their miserable, day-to-day existences; and “Co-Mute Radios” which ancient people used to silence the over-populated, noisy world around them when they traveled. Fuck, it must have been hell on earth!

This idea is only reinforced when you get to the Warfare exhibit. It’s solemn, and plenty of people have their heads bowed and hats off as they pass by these grimmer exhibits. Torture devices, including this sort of scissor-looking thing that would pull off your eyelids; “mines,” which were outlawed in the modern world because thousands of people around the world would be blown up walking out their doors.

>>
>>36859738
Op is getting grim. What did we do to deserve this? Did we pick the wrong choice?!
>>
>>36859738

And, then? Then there are Pokemon-prototypes. You look over documents and videos of mechanical beasts and robots, clunky and stupid-looking. The older stuff looks kinda cool, like the giant boxes that men would sit in and fire missiles out of. "Tanks," they're called. Then there's the sleek planes that would gun down armies. It contrasts a lot with the bipedal and quadrupedal contraptions that they built, all wires and aluminum frames.

These early-looking forms, however, give way to pictures and videos of more organic-looking vehicles and weapons. One of the final lead-up videos shows a “DOG-E,” a yellow canine-robot, jumping over obstacles and racing humans before leveling a truck with an explosion. It looks a lot like a robotic Pokemon, but it obviously isn't living or breathing.

When you get to the cusp of Pokemon development in this timeline the exhibits change to brighter, more hopeful depictions. Bigger pictures, historical relics hidden behind glass... It starts with a variety of materials and nanofabrics laid out next to petri dishes, then moving onto cross-sections of said materials. There's a blurb about mastering energy and materials science.

How you understand it is, well, a Pocket Monster is like an "animal," what the world used to be filled with, but improved in every way. It's like science gave way to magic: natural, organic materials replaced with materials stronger than steel, living organisms given virtual nuclear-reactors worth of energy, sexual reproduction perfected on a cellular level, digitization...

It's a lot to take in.

>>
>>36861133

The first examples of this technology released to the world were mostly militarized: Dragons.

Dragons were some of the first real "weapon" Pokemon made and produced. Giant, powerful beasts carrying around vast amounts of nuclear energy and harnessing it to do things previously unimagined. Unfortunately, this early technology bled off a lot of radiation and made soldiers sick. Smaller, more stable creations had to be made.

As the technology was perfected you saw the early "ancestors" of Pokemon, like Mew. People tend to think that the "ancient" 'Mons were released first, but they weren't. Mew, Ditto, Rhydon, and others were.

Early on, however, the "starters," so common today, started to be mass-produced. Militaries fielded Bulbasaurs next to soldiers, hiding away Dragons and only using them in sieges or to destroy cities. Eventually, the wars escalated and you didn't see soldiers anymore: just Pokemon.

Typing became more nuanced. Each type started to find a niche. Pokemon were refined, strengthened, and even introduced to homes. Domestic Pokemon, the smaller "cuter" ones, hit the shelves. People loved it.

The Dark times hit, though, and the world was flung into chaos. Catastrophic climate ch4nge, nuclear warfare, shortages of everything... People drive underground, leaving only the Pokemon to fight. All that changed, somehow, and now people and Pokemon are living peacefully, rebuilding and repopulating the world.

"Hey, Grey?"

You pull yourself away from the glass. You had been staring at the scientists standing in front of a large test-tube. Apparently part of NASA's International ARC EU and US program. Something about it struck you as odd.

You're not sure what, though.
