“You wanna know my story? Psh, I ain’t telling you that.” You say.

“But I tell you what – you look new around here, so I’ll give ya the two-cred tour.”

“You see out the windows, all the fancy houses, this here is hive central, its rich folk land, here is where they live.”

“This train? This train is on its way to Dust Town – that’s where most folk live. We call ourselves Dust Folk, or Dusters.”

“What’s Dust? Oh boy you are new, ok, it’s like this.”

“This world you’re on – it’s a colony industrial world called Apollyon. Some time ago, the Corewards Empire settles this world because it has a lot of natural resources, metals n’ stuff.”

“Lots of colonists arrive, everything is fine and dandy, life goes on...until they arrive.”

“Yeah, Them, no I ain’t saying their name, do I look stupid to you?”

“The Fair Ones, The Shining Folk, the Fae, The Dreaming Ones. Them.”

“So they decide they want our world too, so they invade. Well no self-respecting tough independent colony world is gonna take that, so we fight. And we die, and we lose.”

“I wasn’t there so I can’t say what happened, some say they were just too powerful, some say the Core Worlds promised to send a fleet that never came, some say the vamps made a deal.”

“Vamps? Oh you’ve heard of them, sorta? Ok, here’s the deal, vamps look mostly like you and me, usual number of arms ‘n legs ‘n stuff. They can seem pretty normal, most of the time. And I guess you could say they are normal, sorta. They are born, they need food, water and air, and they can die. But they also need blood to survive, and they can be really strong and fast and tough, and can mess with people’s minds. And when they do die they can rise again as the True Dead – and then they no longer age, and just get stronger over time.”

“Anyway, the Vamp families control a lot of money across the galaxy, in the Coreworlds Empire, and the Republic, especially in the Free Traders and so on.”
>>
“So I dunno, a bunch of them came with the colonists to watch their investment grow or whatever.”

“And so when They came, what did the vamps do? Cut a deal.”

“Now the vamps keep their wealth, get to be treated like almost equals to Them, and oh yeah, the laws preventing them from turning people into unwilling blood-whores, they just got quietly brushed aside – good for the vamps, yeah?”

“So they get to live in a hive city with clean air and water, and we choke on the Dust.”

“Ah you’re seeing it now, yeah we’re almost at the end of the line, almost out of the nice, safe and sanitized hive. See the grey sky? That’s not cloud, that’s Dust. See the colonists who settled here had strict laws about clean mining, clearing up after yourself and not throwing a lot of crap into the atmosphere. They don’t care, and so the mines run day and night and people die in their thousands to keep production up, safety? Not a consideration. The environment - who cares?”

“How long? Oh I dunno, 200 years I’m told, no one alive today remembers a time when they didn’t rule. They coulda conquered this place 50 years ago, or 1,000, all I know is I was born in Dust Town, and I’ll probably die here.”

“Ah yeah, this is my stop, see ya – and watch out. Take the sleeping pills and don’t dream – I mean it: Don’t. Dream.”

You get off the train and walk away from the station, you got a meet tonight and – you hope – a mission.

You dunno if the fresh ninker is gonna make it, but you help when you can.

The station is deserted this late in the day, is cold, and the dark is closing in. You head towards the meeting point: you meet in different places every time, and Charun takes you to the hide-out – which he moves regularly.

The wind whistles through a thousand tiny holes in the rocks and shacks around dust town. Above the wind you hear a howling that’s getting closer.

Around me people are already going inside their shacks and preparing.

[Metapost]

Hello and thank you for joining me for the very first thread of Psychic Rebel Quest.

This quest will primarily focus on creating the character you’re going to play, because the choices you will make will have an impact on the character, their personality, backstory and abilities, I ask that you please do not write-in your own choices but instead choose from the options I have provided.

From the next quest onwards write-ins will be allowed and encouraged, but for now, please stick to the choices provided, I will be happy to explain the choices along the way, if any of them are unclear. Write-ins, whilst demonstrating player involvement and creativity, will screw up the character generation process.

Choices you make will impact upon the character being made. Note that some options will result in the character gaining a Perk or a Flaw.

Perks provide some form of bonus, but reduce XP gained, Flaws provide a penalty, but increase XP gained. Please pick the choices you want for the character and don’t get too paranoid about *bad* choices.

Thank you for listening.

Yeah, dust ghosts, the reason you always carry salt on you. You look around you for a dead end between two shacks and you sprint there as the howling grows louder. You use a single finger to dig a tiny trench in the dust in front of you and you take out your salt and pour it carefully into the trench, making sure it runs wall to wall of the shacks around you. Protected on three sides by walls, and one by salt, you sit down to wait.

The howling gets louder and louder until finally you see it – a swirling mass of dust taller than a man and with...shapes inside it, fortunately you can’t see what they are, the remains of its last victims probably. Around you all the doors are closed and barred, the people inside protected by their homes, the dust ghosts can’t enter homes, or cross salt.

It wanders around the street, checking walls and doors, sealed tight against it, and then it spots you. In a rush, faster than anything living should be able to move it’s suddenly there – only a few feet away from you, tendrils of wind and dust reaching for you, but barred by the unbroken line of salt. It screams in frustration and tries again and again to get past, but it can’t. You stare it down, unafraid. Finally it leaves, off to haunt another part of dust town. You wait until the noise has faded, and then you carefully collect as much of your spilled salt as you can, and head towards the meeting point.

Charun and the others are waiting there for you, and wordlessly you follow him to an abandoned building some distance away, ushering you all inside and closing the door.

The leader of your little group, Charun, has called you here tonight for a meeting, and you hope, a mission. Charun is an old guy, like maybe 40, yeah, he’s that old, which for a duster is ancient.
>>
He’s got typical duster grey skin and has a short stubbly beard and one eye. He’s glaring at you all as if he suspects you of something. He probably does, to hear him tell it he’s been a rebel since he could walk. He knows everything there is to know about the fey, and lots of other stuff besides. No matter his age or his funny habits you put up with him because of his knowledge, and skills.

You try and imagine being in his place, staring at us 4 kids, (or wait, is it 5 kids?), what does he see when he looks at you?

Dev Mosal
Big guy, maybe 18, towers over everyone. Duster-grey skin and thick arms and legs. Has burn scars on his hands and arms, welding job maybe. Shaven head and looks kinda slow. Good solid lad, and that size – he could wrestle a bestigore. Friendly, gets on with people, but trusting, too trusting.

Shee Hyul
Tiny girl; claims to be 17, looks more like 14. Has long hair that’s only just turning duster-grey, and pale skin. The faded tones of red hair can just be seen under the grey. Wasn’t born a duster. Has the look of a former up-hive girl. Has a fancy charm on a locket ‘round her neck. You’d think someone would have stolen that already. Has a job up in the hive, receptionist or something.

Rhydian
A lot of dusters wear cloth wraps around their heads to keep the dust out. Doesn’t work, but Rhyddian never takes his off. Also he has a long coat, what’s he hiding under there? Maybe he’s badly burned or scarred. Quiet too, Doesn’t say much, but reliable and follows orders. Doesn’t have a job, scavenges and begs. Who knows Rhyddians age – tall though, maybe 16-18.
>>
Rainya Halms
Rainya has the typical grey duster skin, but much deeper. The skin underneath is a darker tone. Before, skin colour used to matter, doesn’t now –you’re all dusters. Youngest of the group. Looks 15. And hasn’t pulled herself together. Next to Rainya is an identical girl – same clothes, same height, same everything. Rainya notices her double with a start, then the two reach out a hand towards each other. As soon as the hands touch, there’s only one girl. Yeah Rainya is a Champion, don’t expect too much though, that’s her only power. Still, can come in handy. Works as a cleaner in rich peoples homes.

Which are you? Why you’re...

Ok, Shee Hyul it is. no more votes please
>>
>>36857421
Seems pretty peaceful so far. I think it helps that the characters are "packaged", rather than gender being a single choice (which is the height of shit, you're basically setting yourself up for trolling with it).
>>
You are Shee Hyul, former hive girl, now a duster, just like those around you. Your once-red hair is fading as the dust gets into it, and the locket around your neck is all that remains of your old life. You can fit in easily with the other hive folk, but out here with the dusters, you’ll need a whole new set of skills to fit in.

Charun tells you about the mission “We’re breaking into a water treatment plant” he says “it cleans all the dust and crap out of the water so that the rich folk don’t have to think about how we live” He notices the disappointed looks “yeah yeah, I know, it’s not blowing up an ammo dump or killing someone important, but it’s what we’ve been asked to do – raise awareness and that. Hopefully when a million hivers turn on their taps to see grey sludge, maybe they’ll think about how good they’ve got it. Anyway” he finishes “let’s go.”

With that you all climb into a beaten-up old track, it’s cramped and uncomfortable but you all make do. After an hour Charun pulls over “We’re here” he says quietly “From here, we approach on foot, stick close.”

You and your allies approach a large building on the edge of the hive, thick pipes run in and out of it. “Follow me and stay quiet” whispers Charun. He waits until a light inside has moved on – probably a guard – and then moves quickly up to the wall, hugging it tightly you follow, staying low below the level of the windows.

Charun directs Dev and Rainya to watch for guards in one direction, takes up a watch himself in another and says to Rhydian and you “Get the door open.”

Examining the lock, Rhydian turns to you and says “What are you gonna do?”

“Why ask me?” you ask indignantly

“Because I have no ideas” comes the response.

What should you do?

Oh fuck's sake. I hope we can quit these faggots as soon as possible. They seem all kinds of awful. Poisoning water supplies is just about one of the most fuck off evil things you can do, "social awareness" or not.

You bend down and examine the lock; its electronic nature puts it far beyond what most dusters are used to putting up with.

“What’re you doing?” asks Rhydian, “Just break it.”

“Give me a minute” you say in a distracted tone of voice, pulling a few tools out of a pocket, it’s not long before the lock beeps quietly and the door opens.

“How did you do that?” asks Rhydian, his voice rising slightly.

“An old Kelsper II” you say in a casual tone “not really a challenge compared to some locks I’ve seen.”

“Check for guards” comes Charuns harsh whisper “And get back here.” Rhydian and you head inside. Once inside, as you’re looking around, Rhydian asks “So like, I know you’re a hive girl, but where your parents locksmiths or something?”

“You want to know about my parents?” you say “I don’t know you well enough to tell you that.”

But you see, the truth is, your parents...

You never knew your parents, aunts and uncles and extended family raised you and would never answer questions about your parentage, avoiding the topic. They obviously knew something but refused to tell you, the whole thing left you somewhat bitter. If you ever meet your parents you don’t know if you’ll be glad to see them, or hate them for abandoning you.

As Rhydian draws a breath to snark back you hold up a hand to quiet him, and then drag him around a corner, putting a finger to your lips you point in the direction of the corridor and mouth the word “guard” silently.

Down the corridor comes a guard in an untidy uniform, holding a torch and whistling to himself, he’s walking quickly and if he’s anything like underpaid guards on night shifts everywhere, he’ll probably walk right past you and Rhydian. Still, he might spot your allies when they come in, maybe you should do something about him.

Rhydian seems to agree “I’ll knock him out” he whispers, barely audible even this close.

What should you do?

>Let Rhydian handle it

Because we want to see what our abilities are and we're determining our character now. As QM said NO WRONG CHOICES. So if we choose to fight we may be a competent combatant we choose to avoid fighting we may lack the ability to. So.. I'd prefer to gain combat capabilities.

No, you'll want social abilities. You're just going combat now because you're really dumb and haven't remembered that we don't even need to actually know how to fight to be competent in combat.

If you notice, this quest is about having Psionic powers. So obviously that will be our major power, so in that case having social will be more important.

>>
>>36858332
But what if we don't want psionics to be our only or primary combat option?
We could use psionics for support too.

I'm betting with you right now, there will be moments where we can't use our pschic powers. And I want us to be prifcient in combat for that.

One instance of samefagging and it wasn't even that vitriolic after the fact. Still better than most quests.

The playerbase was pretty well-behaved, for the most part, and there wasn't any major samefagging after that that I can recall.

>Anon, there is absolutely no reason to stay around in a quest that is not enjoyable to you.
Okay. I wasn't judging him if he had left at that point, I just couldn't recall too many instances outside of the first ten threads where anything like that happened.
>>
>>36858492
There was some samefagging here and there from time to time. No it wasn't very vitriolic, at least not compared to what other quests have to see sometimes. Nonetheless, I can see why he would have the impression of aligment sperg, because that was a thing.
I blame Mathrian for that, btw.

No time for subtlety. As the guard walks past, oblivious to your presence you jump out and tackle him to the ground. With the element of surprise you quickly pin him down and hit him again and again until he stops moving, unconscious. He barely managed a few weak attacks that you easily deflected. You get off him, still trembling with adrenaline and look around.

Rhydian is just standing there, unmoving “Wha-what the hell?” he asks.

“What?” you reply.

“How?” he exclaims, pointing to you with one hand, and the guard on the floor with the other “You’re so...small.”

“Which is why I learned how to fight” you say, grabbing the guards legs “Now help me move officer doughnut here.”

The two of you manage to hide the unconscious guard out of the way, and then you head out to tell Charun and the others what happened.

Charun rubs his chin thoughtfully “not how I would have done it” he says, but good job.”

The others give you looks of newfound respect, despite your small size you managed to take down a much larger opponent in seconds, unarmed.

As a group you move through the water treatment plant until Charun tells you to stay put and scouts ahead, coming back he doesn’t look too happy “guard post” he explains “supposed to only be two guards there, but instead there’s five, ok, this is going to be a real fight.”

He pulls off his backpack and opens it up, showing you an assortment of guns and other weapons.

Charun offers the first pick to you. There’s a heavy club, a short sword, what looks to be a fast-firing repeater pistol, and a rifle, albeit with a shortened stock to make it easier to carry. Ugh, slug-thrower guns, so uncivilised, you’d prefer a nice las or plasma gun any day, still, you are about to go into a fight.

“Ok” says Charun “This next bit could get a bit rough, what weapon do you want?”

That's not how ballistics work, anon. It can't be a sniper rifle because sniper rifles need to be long for the bullet to achieve the necessary acceleration and spin.

I just wished people would think a bit before desperatly trying to look down on people.
The choice was for choosing the kind of weapon we are good at. The actual weapon we got right now is not relevant to the question at all.
But we need proficiency wth two-handed range weapons for sniper, thats why we take the option that gives us proficiency for two-handed range weapons.
Just think for a second, its not so hard.

“Give me the rifle” you say to Charun, taking the gun from him as he hands it to you. You expertly check that it’s loaded, that the safety is on, and then you sight it down the corridor, away from your allies “The sights on this thing are shit” you comment quietly.

“All I could get on short notice” says Charun, as the others share out the weapons between them, Dev takes the club, and Rhydian the sword, Rainya takes the repeater pistol and Charun draws a thick-barrelled pistol from a hidden holster, crafty old bastard, saving the best for himself, that looks like a plasma pistol.

You all gather outside the door of the guard station and then Charun kicks in the door and Dev and Rhydian rush inside and engage two of the guards. Rainya fires off bursts with her pistol, managing to hit one of the guards more by luck than skill. Dev and Rhydian manage to occupy two of the guards as you carefully aim and squeeze *bang* a bloody crater appears in one guards chest. As another pulls his pistol out you sight and squeeze again *bang* and he’s down too.

Although you had equal numbers, surprise put you at a clear advantage and soon all the guards are dead or down. You notice Charun hasn’t fired a single shot.

After the fight you all take a moment to breath before moving on, Dev throws up in a corner, Rhydian doesn’t seem much bothered and Rainya looks pale, but steady. Charun...nothing bothers Charun.
Rainya says to you “You’re pretty calm about” she gestures at the dead people.

“Not the first people I’ve sent to the next life” you say harshly.

“Next life” she says “Is that what you believe, are you a Syrnian?”
>>
>>36859141
Then I assume you voted for something else, and thats okay.
>>
Ah yes, Syrne. The dominant religion of the Core Empire, or so you’ve been told. Love thy neighbour, be kind to one another, worship only Syrne. Oh and one last thing: all magic and magic creatures are evil.

“Why are you even asking about my views on religion?” you say “What does that matter?”

“Just asking” says Rainya

“None of your damn business” you point out

To yourself you can admit...

“Let’s get going” says Charun, once Dev has finished “As slack as these guards are, there will still be check-ins now and then, move!” You all jump a little at that and follow him out of the room towards the control centre.

You unconsciously make the sign of respect to your gods, if ever you needed their help, now is the time. Under your breath you pray as you walk.

“Heart of Darkness, hide me from my foes;”
“Ichor in the Depths, watch over me, your faithful child;”
“Infinite Mirror, reveal to me their weaknesses;”
“Jagganatha, teach me strength and power;”
“King of Hell, should I fall, welcome me home.”

Bolstered by the familiar rote prayer you follow along, your heart lighter.

Finally, you get to the control centre. You see row on row on computers and machinery, yeah, this is more your speed.

“Dev” says Charun “the bombs”. Dev takes off a heavy pack and carefully lifts out several well-wrapped objects.

Charun looks over at you “You want to help place the bombs, or maybe see if you can get any useful information from the computer, or stand guard?”

“I’ll take a look at the rig” you say, sitting in one of the chairs and powering up one of the workstations. “The gateway on this thing probably isn’t even corp-spec.”

“What did she just say?” Dev asks Rhydian, Rhydian shrugs and looks at you. Ugh, duste- ah dammit. Anyway, you explain yourself, speaking slowly “I’m going to look at the computer; I don’t think the security is very good.”

“Oh” says Dev, as he and Rhydian set up the bombs as Rainya stands guard, both of her watching different approaches.

Charun stands behind you, looking over your shoulder. Yeah the security on this thing might keep a 5 year old out, if she were a dumb 5 year old. In no time at all you’re in, and all the treatment plants systems and records are at your fingertips. Mostly its boring shit, work logs, service requests, purchase orders-

“Wait” says Charun “Go back.” Ugh, back-seat riggers. Still, you comply “there” he says, pointing at the screen “where are they storing-”

“The Cellanite” you say “That’s just filter-cleaning stuff, why would you want-”

“Because if you cook it with a few other things” says Charun “it makes a pretty good bang.”

Oh. “This raid wasn’t just about dirty water was it?” you ask.

“Nope” he confirms your suspicions, adding “When they’ve got the bombs set up, you and Dev wander over to the storeroom and bring back as much of those tins as you can carry.”

It’s not far, but still, shifty old bastard

With the bombs all in place, you and Dev head down the corridor to a storeroom. It’s locked, but the security system isn’t a problem, what is more concerning is the faint white mist gathered in the room, coming from a leaky pipe in the wall. You’re not sure what’s leaking into the room, but it can’t be good.

“C’mon” insists Dev, looking at the rows of tins on shelves through the glass panel “Lets just grab them and get back.”
>>
You spot air vents on the ceiling, shut down for the night, wouldn’t take long to get back to the control room and turn them on, but Charun might get pissed that you’re taking too long.

Or you could brave the...whatever it is collected in the store room, or hell, just let Dev get the stuff.

How should you get the Cellanite?

“Wait here” you say to Dev, as you head back to the room, a few moments at the computer, under Charuns suspicious eye, and when you’re back at the store room, the fan has already sucked all the white mist out of the room and Dev and you enter unharmed.

You and Dev grab as many of the Cellanite cans as you can, and head back to the main control centre. As you’re packing them all into the packs you bought Rainya calls out softly “Guard coming.”

“Rhydian, Dev” directs Charun “get the cans packed, Rainya, Shee, get rid of the guard.”

Rainya looks at you, seemingly unsure what to do. “Follow me” you say, one of her follows you, the other one remains back in the room. “What’s that like?” you ask.

“What’s what like?” she asks.

“The whole, two bodies thing” you say

“Oh” she replies “Well, you have two hands right? It’s like that.”

“Forget I asked” you say, the two of you wait behind a corner as another patrolling guard approaches.

How should you handle the guard?

How do you know it does nothing? Unless OP told you and nobody else, in which case I'd like to know now.

Still, it will spread out the skills even more, mkaing the character even more of a generalist.

I suppose so, but at least it doesn't add Social. I like social, but it's a bit much when added to hacking and shooting, so I hope this is something to do with internal team sense or something equally focused.

“I already took down one guard” you whisper to Rainya, “Your turn.”

She looks at you in surprise then says “right, right I got this.” As the guard comes past she dives into him, knocking him backwards, but not down. He reacts a lot faster than the previous guard and swings the heavy end of his torch into Rainyas face, she stumbles back, blood streaming down her face but still tries to knock the guard out with the butt of her pistol. You see him reaching for a radio on his belt; seriously, a hand-held, this really is the fucking pits, what’s wrong with combeads?

Rainya might win, she might not, still, with the guard cursing and trying to fend Rainya off with his torch in one hand, and radio in the other you can’t take that chance. You sidle up behind him and smack him in the back of the head with your rifle butt. He slumps to the floor, unconscious.

After dealing that guard you’re breathing fast, you need to calm down. You lean against the wall, taking deep breaths, damn, why do you need to do everything yourself?

“Sorry” says Rainya “I’m used to being about to outnumber someone on my own”

“Then bring all of yourself with you next time” you say “Now grab his legs.”

As the two of you hide the guard, it seems Rainya wants to chat. “You don’t seem too calm” she says.

“I’m fine” you growl out, maybe you should have dealt with that guard yourself, if he’d raised the alarm, you could all end up dead. You try to look as calm as possible, as your heart hammers in your chest.

“Are you worried about the mission, or something else?” asks Rainya

“It’s nothing” you say, no point in sharing.

But inside you know...

As you and Rainya head back to the centre, you curse yourself for not bringing any of your stash with you, no uppers, no downers, not even a few capsules of Shine. Still, as much as you feel the need to take something, you know Charun doesn’t like you using on missions, he’s made that very clear to you. But I mean, it’s not like you’re an addict or anything, you just need a little help every now and then.

As you get back to the control centre you say to Charun “It’s done.” You decide not to mention Rainyas screw up, she can just owe you a favour.

“Good” says Charun “The bombs are set, and we’ve outstayed our welcome. I want you and Rainya to scout ahead.” He, Rhydian and Dev pick up heavy packs “We’re carrying the gear and can’t move fast.”

Oh joy. You look at Rainya “Ok we split up” you say “And if you spot any guards, deal with them.” She heads off, both of her together.

You run on ahead to make sure the escape route is clear. As you’re almost to the exit you hear a noise up ahead, another guard?

You hide behind some machinery and see another guard come walking into view. No wait, it’s not a guard, not at all!

What looks like a man comes walking through the room you’re in, only men don’t usually have flames licking out of their mouths with every breath. And few men walk with the confidence of knowing there’s nothing around them that can hurt them, shit!

What’s one of the Gifted doing here? You idly wonder what he bargained away to the fae for power? His free will, years of service? His family? Whatever it is, he’ll be deadly, if you and your allies run into that thing you’re all dead. You cannot fight him.
