Welcome to Academy City. The time is morning, the weather is cool, and the date is December 24.

You are Kyril Torikov and you had just finished breakfast. Your day seemed quite open but that only meant that it could easily be filled. There was one thing you wouldn’t want to miss in the world though. This evening, you were going to reunite with your biological mother. Growing up as a Child Error, an orphan had resulted in an interesting childhood. Then you died. It was a rather interesting path through life and hopefully your mother wouldn’t hold it against you. Still, you felt nervous. Without prior experience in the matter of reuniting with lost family, the feeling was probably natural. There was little you could do about it anyway.

Shifting your thoughts to other matters, there were two that needed addressing. First, you needed a date. You were to attend a Christmas party of sorts. There was only one person who you’d think to invite in that case. It was thus a matter of convincing her. The sooner, the better. The other matter was Nayuta. She had sent you a request to meet up. It was for work. As the HsCC-02 VERDICT and a member of Judgement, you were obligated to report in. She did say ASAP but that didn’t mean you couldn’t do other things first. Then again Code M rarely waited. Putting this off may be a bad idea. You prioritised,

You put your personal problems aside for the moment. If you were quick, you’d still have some time left over to look for a date and still see your mother. That was your hope at least. You found Nayuta in another office building. She was bright and cheery as ever as she greeted you. Again, the room was set up with multiple monitors and most of them were scrolling walls of text. The others were video feeds.

“Good timing nii-san. We’ve got a bit of a problem on our hands.”

The screen flickered and brought up two images. One was a logo, a stylised fusion between an “A” and an “L” whereas the other was a scan of Ilija’s file.

“We’ve got a note from a very famous person, here let me read it out,” Nayuta pulled out the note in question, “Dear Academy City, there is in your possession a shield that belonged to Aias the Unconquered which has caught my eye. For this I am willing to part with an interesting individual who is registered within your databases as Ilija. In the spirit of the season, I shall have her gift wrapped and ready to exchange with your representative at my coming Christmas party. Should you decline this invitation, know that I shall myself acquire the shield personally before the coming of the New Year.”

The note went in to further detail regarding party in question. Said details happened to be the same as the one Tadakuni had given you just seven hours prior. It couldn’t be coincidence.

“What are my orders?” you asked instead.

“In order of importance, secure the girl, the artefact, and Lupin IV,” Nayuta replied, “If that proves problematic, kill her then secure the artefact.”

You acknowledged them.

“I also managed to borrow TESTAMENT until afternoon so we won’t be able to upload everything,” she continued, “Only has Greek Mythology and the Bible. Wanna have a go?”

Well you were glad to know that you were still going to the same party. It’d be awkward to decline the invitation so soon. While uploading information directly in to your brain was handy, you think you’ll just have to decline the opportunity now. You still had to find a date for the party. Come to think of it, you also had the number for THIEF. That was worth looking in to.

“Hmmm, I didn’t think you’d turn down the opportunity, especially since I’ve worked so hard to get it ready,” Nayuta pouted, “It’s that woman isn’t it?”

“What woman?” you asked.

“Ah never mind,” she shooed you out of the office with an ominous, “though I wouldn’t get too close to anyone if I were you nii-san.”

You weren’t sure how to interpret that statement. Was it a warning, or a threat? Was she trying to help you or otherwise? In the end it was a waste of time. Your life, as you knew it, belonged to the City. As long as you did what you were told there shouldn’t be any problems. Ideally, that’d be the case. But as always, your circumstances were rather unique and blackmail was certainly on the cards. More leverage was useful. Privately, you had to wonder if you’ll ever be a free man again. Still, you had to put that aside as you stepped out on to the street. Your next stop was,

After you near disastrous attempts at subtlety at the Tokiwadai Outer Dormitory, you were rather reluctant to go there again. A powerful guardian beast stalked the halls. Queenie also held court there and you wouldn’t want to run in to her. Hell, you didn’t want to run in to any Ladies of Tokiwadai that you had acquainted yourself with. It’d just make the whole thing rather awkward. You went with the next best thing, a payphone. It didn’t take too long to find one, nor did it take too long to look up Asuka’s number. Thank goodness for Rank B security clearance. Being able to look in to the Tokiwadai’s Student Registrar database with your credentials was in no way an abuse of power. Unfortunately, you could only reach her room, doubly so when it was not Asuka that picked up. It was her roommate, a certain Mitsuko Kongou.

“Hello?” was the uncertain answer.

The phones, as you have now just found out, were mostly for emergency use. No doubt you gave her a scare calling through it. Still, with the most official tone you could articulate through the helmet you spoke,

“I must speak with Kudou Asuka.”

“Oh,” there was a bit of a pause, “My apologies, but Asuka-san is not in. Shall I pass on a message?”

It’d be more than a bit embarrassing to admit you were calling to invite her to a Christmas party.

“She is being extended an invitation to attend a meeting of great importance tomorrow,” you lied, “I only wish to confirm whether she will or not.”

“Ah, I’m sorry, but I think she will be busy that day.”

“I see, may I ask why?”

There was a lengthy silence. As you were about to ask again Kongou spoke,

“It seems she has been invited out by a gentleman named Toulour.”

That was all you needed to know before you hung up. Damn, what now?

Assuming we can't get this situation amended and Asuka is unavailable (I hope Tolour knows better than to try to steal her heart)

We could probably pull some rank and get Kaur to assist us on this "mission". She is still in town yes? Asuka did get jelly at her previously.

Failing that, bribe/ask Kyouko. She is/was Asuka's rival. She might do it out of spite.

You didn’t have Toulour’s number per se. He was working with THIEF, so you’d probably be able to contact him through that. At least, that was what you thought. When you rang up the number, you got someone else entirely.

“I was wondering when you’d call,” Sagara started coolly.

“Sagara?”

“What? Were you expecting someone else?”

“Where’s Toulour? You didn’t retire him did you?”

“Why does everyone keep asking me that?” your friend sighed, “No I did not, and no he’s retiring this year.”

There was a beat.

“If you do kill him, I’m afraid we’re going to have to terminate your relationship with THIEF,” Sagara stated, “Not because we care what happens to him, but because the rules are pretty clear here. We’re thieves not killers.”

“I wasn’t aware I was on a job.”

“You want to steal Asuka’s heart, figuratively speaking,” he replied before his tone became cheery, “On that note we do offer consultation services. All’s fair in love and war.”

You swore you could see him smirk on the other side of the line.

“What do you know about the Christmas Party then?”

“Ah, Lupin’s little celebration,” his voice reverted back to neutral, “I assume Tadakuni passed an invitation over?”

“My boss also got one.”

“Right,” he sighed, “That’s just like her. Well it’s a formal event so we’re hoping you could dress up and come with a date. After we exchange ‘gifts’ there’ll be a round of poker to determine who gets to keep the shield. Initial buy-in is 1 million JPY. The rules are no limit Texas Hold ‘Em. Didn’t Tadakuni tell you all this? Hell I’m surprised you didn’t ask Asuka first thing this morning.”

That would have made things so much easier. You’re not quite sure where you could find the money for that though. Among the options you had, you decided to,

Well you didn’t want to appear clingy, or jealous, so it was probably best to find another date. As for the buy-in, you’re pretty sure you had an old offshore account with 1 million sitting around somewhere. You’d have to consult Nayuta about that. If you couldn’t get a hold of it, you’d have to talk to Nayuta anyway. She’d probably be interested to know how the party was going down. Come to think of it, if you asked, she could probably help you stack the odds in your favour if you were really going to do this without violence.

“No, thanks for the info Sagara,” you hung up.

With that you hung up and contacted Nayuta.

“Oooh a game, I love games nii-san,” was her reaction, “As for your old account, it’s been frozen on account of you being dead. Currently the one who has any say over it is your ex-girlfriend.”

It must have been in the fine print, you thought.

“Anyway, otherwise, I’ll have Ben-jii-san help out,” she continued, “The City doesn’t trust kids like you with that kind of money.”

“You’re not telling me to bring Ben-jii as my date are you?”

“Whatever gave you that idea nii-san?” she asked innocently, “Or are you asking me out on a date?”

“I’ve already gone to jail,” you pointed.

“Nyahahaha, that’s true,” she laughed, “Well, if you could buy yourself in you can choose your own partner. Otherwise you’re going with Ben-jii-san, or me I guess.”

Money aside, you really needed a date. Preferably, it’d be a girl so you wouldn’t end up in more yaoi manga. You were pretty sure you had a list somewhere…

“Wait, what if I picked someone else from Judgement, would that be okay?” you asked.

“Hmm? Am I not good enough for you nii-san?” she teased, “Who do you have in mind?”

“Jaswinder Kaur.”

It was a name you had almost forgotten. Well, you had forgotten and then remembered her name. She was Code M too, but you were pretty sure she was like Ben-jii.

“I suppose that could work let me get back to you on that,” furious clicking ensued, “We could split up the money, improve our chances. A team from Anti-Skill and a team from Judgement, I like it. The Board doesn’t, at least not as much. We’ll split the bill. Go find Ben-jii to get your assigned money. Then you need to find 500,000 on your own, and also impress your date about her future assignment.”

As for the money, you had a few ideas on where to get some. Barring your old account, you were pretty sure there were opportunities to make a quick buck around here. THIEF of course, was the first option. While obviously illegal, you were confident you could be discreet enough. Then there was the Slumlord Strange. You were pretty sure you could come to an arrangement with Kyouko. It wasn’t like she owed you half a mil or anything. The time is lunch, the weather is brisk, and the date remains unchanged.

Well, you had to go see Asuka. While not the most reliable of methods, it was the most legal. That is, the money actually belonged to you. It was just a matter of unfreezing the account. You managed that by arranging an encounter with the Dictator. That is, you simply looked up her schedule with your clearance and placed yourself in her path. She didn’t seem outwardly surprised or anything. She was however, in the company of a few of her school mates. Your recognised them and put it out of your mind. This was not a private meeting.

“Can I help you?” she asked.

You had affixed your Judgement armband. Even if they were outside of the Garden, it was rather suspicious to be accosted by a helmeted member of Judgement.

“I’d like to discuss some financial irregularities with you,” you replied.

Her friends were easily mollified at that. They went on ahead as the two of you walked in the direction of a familiar bank.

“Is this about your old account?” she got straight to business.

You nodded.

“I am only slightly disappointed you haven’t put up a fight for me,” she continued, “Toulour is more interested your mother in any case.”

You recalled that he had named her his favourite Torikov. That is, until she died. The title fell to you. Then you died. Truly the Torikov name is cursed, you mused.

“The only reason he is not going with her is because he was, as they say, dumped,” she giggled slightly, “However, being the cousin of Lupin IV, it was pretty much a given that he had to attend. So he went with me instead. An interesting pair is it not? Both of us have lost our loves.”

In a manner of speaking that was true. You had forgotten how talkative Asuka could get.

“Pray tell, who are you asking out to Riko’s soirée?”

“Kaoru.”

[1/2]
>>
>>36863212
Her eyes narrowed, but not dangerously so.

“At least it was not the Queen.”

“The thought did cross my mind,” you admitted.

“Well I am thankful for small mercies,” she remarked, “The next time, if we should ever find ourselves in a triangular situation, I suggest you murder the hypotenuse. In fact, there is still time for that.”

You fell silent after her casual encouragement to murder all rivals to your love. She was right. It wasn’t too late to murder Toulour. Putting the thought aside, the two of you spent most of her lunch hour transferring account ownership. Asuka would still have rights to it in the event of your death, but at least now you had a truly private account.

Your memory was correct. You had just a little over one million JPY. It was more than enough for the buy-in. If you withdrew it all, you wouldn’t have to worry about potentially paying the City back the money you lost.

With her presence no longer needed, Asuka quickly left. You thought about emptying your account but it was probably a good idea to save some for a rainy day. Hell, this could probably be your slush fund. You never knew when you could use some. You also needed some fancy clothes. A new suit would probably set you back a pretty penny. You were left with 750,101 JPY in the account. The next step was to talk to Ben-jii. He was supposed to have half of your buy-in after all. Thankfully he wasn’t teaching in the afternoon so the both of you grabbed lunch.

“You’re going to need a suit,” he nodded.

“I was just going to get one,” you replied.

“I meant something more bullet proof,” he clarified, “How much money you got to spend?”

Discounting the money you set aside for the buy-in, you had about 100 thousand. You could probably dip in to your salary for some more but not that much.

“That’s not nearly enough,” he continued, “Enough for stab proof, maybe.”

“We’re expecting that much trouble huh?”

“Hope for the best, plan for the worst,” he replied, “The worst part is that it’s Lupin. No one can predict Lupin. Well almost no one.”

“Who’s your partner by the way?”

Ben-jii smiled at that.

“A consulting detective,” was his answer, “Still, where should we head next? You might want to make a withdrawal if you’re going to have the best protection the City can offer.”

The time is late afternoon, the weather is clear, and the date remains unchanged.

The two of you headed to the bank. You needed more money. It was best to go with the best protection you could afford. You remembered that Ilija had had a sniper at her disposal. While your helmet could take a shot, your rather fleshy centre mass was probably not up to the task. I might not stop a serious round but against handguns and SMGs, it could increase your survivability. Even if you got shot, the colour should be able to hide it well enough. After that, Ben-jii drove you to meet your date.

Nayuta worked fast, having handled the paperwork of it all. Apparently, she was transferring Jaswinder Kaur to Branch Office 49 on a permanent basis. Kaoru had technically been considered a trainee at that point but no longer. When you asked Nayuta how she could expedite the process, she merely giggled and told you that she was Branch Office 49. It was a pretty lonely outfit until you came along.

The song playing on the radio was,

http://youtu.be/tUXjWeWuVSk

“Huh, that’s the second day it’s doing that,” Ben-jii complained.

He was banging on the dash.

“Normally doesn’t play anything that isn’t classic rock,” he explained, “Yesterday was French rap.”

You dismissed it as he kept trying to fix his radio and drive. Honestly you were impressed you managed to arrive at Judgement Branch Office 177 intact. Leaving Ben-jii to his radio, you walked in to the office. There were three girls decorating the room when you entered. Two of them were tagged as members of Judgement, Uiharu and Shirai. The other was a civilian.

“Ah, VERDICT-san,” Uiharu greeted, “erm, Kaoru is, uh, on patrol at the moment.”

“That won’t be necessary,” you replied, “I’ll go find her myself, it’s rather urgent.”

You left them to their decorating. It wasn’t like Kaoru couldn’t visit since Branch Office 49 didn’t really have an office. Wherever Nayuta unfolded her battle station was where HQ was that day. It would be just like Kaoru never transferred out in the first place. Kaoru was easily found. She was the only one with a yellow aura surrounding her to begin with. Along with her superior, Konorii Mii, she was walking the beat.

“Jaswinder Kaur, you have been promoted to full member and are transferred to Branch Office 49,” you stated, “Please come with me for your briefing. We’re on a schedule.”

“I understand,” she replied evenly.

Konori looked at her worriedly but otherwise didn’t stop her. You noted the tone. It wasn’t the kind children had when they were told they were being separated. She had recognised that duty called. In this, Kaoru was the model soldier. Still, she was probably not done walking the beat so you elected to walk back to Nayuta’s current location. You ignored Ben-jii’s descriptive language as you passed his car.

“How many are working at Branch Office 49?” she asked.

“Myself and one other,” your reply was mechanical, “with you that makes three in total.”

Her meeting with Nayuta was likewise subdued. You think Nayuta was slightly disappointed. If Kaoru was confused, bewildered or otherwise disturbed, she hid it well with her stoic expression. In fact, she wasn’t at all surprised when it was revealed that she was going to be used to combat Code M, despite being one herself. All in all, the briefing went without a hitch. By the time you were done, your other appointment approached. Just as you made to leave, Kaoru asked you a question,

“May I have your name? I don’t believe you’ve introduced yourself.”

“No, I didn’t,” you continued to the door, “Ask Nayuta.”

She frowned.

“It’ll be nice working with you again,” you added before the door closed.

The time is now evening, the weather is chilly, and the date remains unchanged.

With the rest of your day being so busy, you didn’t really have time to prepare, mentally, for your upcoming appointment. It was a good thing. You would hate being a nervous wreck all day. Touma was going to bring her over to your place. It was much better than a public location anyway. Though knowing Touma, he’d walk straight in to a fire fight, or meet an old grudge. You shook you head, just hoping for the best. If anything you at least wanted to pay him back with some dinner.

What surprised you the most, as you went about making dinner, was how steady your hands were. Your nervousness was rising. It was probably an advantage of having telekinetically controlled arms. The doorbell rang as you were just done dicing shallots. Without delay, you unlocked the door. It was the sight of the woman before you retreating, falling backwards in shock.

There stood what was supposed to be your mother. Her hair was white, her eyes were red, and glowing about her like a silhouette was a red aura. A memory resurfaced. You remembered how you got those scars across your chest and back. The word ‘vampire’ flashed once in your mind. Your helmet was on your desk, and so was your gun. Even then you didn’t think it’d be much help.

She took a step forward and you,

Do we gotta invite her before can she can cross the threshold?
>>
The last time you tried to do anything against a vampire, it ended badly. You remembered their weaknesses, garlic, running water, the Cross. You had none of these things on hand. That was assuming she was a Western Vampire. Seeing as she had crossed your threshold, she probably wasn’t. You noted her clothes. It was civilian wear. You just imagined that the red aura surrounding her cloaked with some kind of phantasmal dress. All you could do was stay still and hoped she didn’t notice. Stay very still.

“Kyril?”

So much for that plan, you thought bitterly. Her voice was hoarse. It was not at all like you imagined. In fact it just made her scarier. She was probably thirsty, thirsty for your blood. Kneeling down, she raised a hand. It cupped your cheek and you flinched away from her touch, eliciting a frown.

Shit.

“Kyril?”

It was Touma’s voice that broke the spell.

“Your mother’s nothing to be afraid of,” he said.

You glanced at him, before your attention came back to your biological mother. Her eyes were soft. You tried to convince yourself she wasn’t looking at you like prey. Touma had terrible luck but to actually bring a vampire back and claim it was your mother had to take the cake. Your eyes wandered, taking her in fully. The memory of her wedding photo was blurry and unclear but the face. You remembered her face. It was similar but you couldn’t be sure.

Sighing, Touma picked you off the ground as your mother made herself comfortable in your kitchen. He sat you down and patted your shoulder,

“You alright?”

No, you were not. You didn’t say that. Instead, you replied,

>”There is a vampire. In. My. Kitchen.”
>”How are you sure that’s my mother?”

“Touma let me tell you something,” you whispered, “I’ve had very, very, bad experiences with vampires.”

He scratched his head. It looked like it he couldn’t make the connection.

“There is a vampire,” you spoke slowly, “in my kitchen.”

It drew said vampire’s attention.

“No riddles please,” you added hurriedly.

She frowned as Touma looked on confused.

“My only regret is that I could not be the one to end their miserable existence,” she declared.

Touma snapped his head in her direction. Your mother just went back to cooking. You wondered,

“How did she know that?”

“Call it mother’s intuition.”

“I think you’re overreacting,” Touma offered, “so, uh, sorry.”

To be fair, it wasn’t his fault that your mother was a vampire. If she was a vampire, that is. You’ve calmed down somewhat. It allowed you to look back and remember that it wasn’t just the vampire in your memory that was scary. No, the old man in green who had torched it to nothing without batting an eye was just as scary. That your mother was on their tier was quite a shock. Combined with your healthy respect for vampires, well, maybe you weren’t overreacting. You were just was wary when she served dinner.

She sat and watched as you ate in silence, her own food cooling to the point where it might need reheating. Touma dug in with gusto. It wasn’t bad, not even when she had started halfway through what you had planned. No, you could say that it was good. There was a quality to it you couldn’t quite put your hand on. Well, maybe she wasn’t so bad. As the thought crossed your mind, she smiled softly.

One day the crabs will win.

You are Suzushina Yuriko, a Level 0 nobody. At least, that was until you started living with the Accelerator. Well, it was more like he moved in with you. The both of you shared a strange relationship. He knew you were taking advantage of him but at the same time he seemed to be taking advantage of you. It wasn’t physical, but he was definitely using you for something. There wasn’t a way for you to rationalise being shipped off to Istanbul like a piece of meat otherwise. That terrible ordeal was behind you however and the normal routine had reasserted itself. You woke up, made breakfast, before he accompanied you to school. There you’d suffer through class, pine for your first love, and gossip with your best friend Chiyo-chan. Then you’d walk back home with him and settle in for dinner before watching a movie or something before hitting the hay. It was a stable, controlled and near worry-free lifestyle.

It was what just what the doctor ordered. No really. Today, like any other day he was walking you home. You never bothered to ask what he did during the day but you knew he did something. His rescue of you in Istanbul proved it. You had a feeling it was clandestine in nature. It was why you never asked. From his expression, and it was rather varied when you got to know the Accelerator, you figured today was another rough day on the job. He could do with some venting. Or maybe he didn’t want to talk about it. It was fifty-fifty like that. Christmas was around the corner too so that’d be a great distraction.

>He could borrow your ear
>He could use a distraction

Well whatever, it wasn’t like you couldn’t stop listening to him. You had no ability to deflect anything. He was grumbling about work so it was probably a good idea to let him vent.

“Stupid job,” he’d grumble, “Fucking annoying.”

It didn’t take much to get him talking. Over the months you had perfected the look that all exasperated women, young and old, had perfected. It was your go to tool to guilt him in to talking. With a defeated sigh, he started,

“I don’t know how to play poker.”

You would have laughed at him, rather loudly too. Of course, you didn’t know any poker yourself so you just kept your mouth shut. At your silent urging, he continued,

“They already have people on the job. I’m just their fucking insurance.”

You pretended to ignore that last bit.

“To make things even worse, I need a ‘date’.”

You could see him form literal quotation marks in the air. At least now you knew why he was so surly. Not only was he being forced to participate in something he didn’t have the slightest idea how to do, he needed a date. Well, the date part wasn’t hard and while you weren’t hoping he’d pick you, it wasn’t like he was spoiled for choice. There was that Kyouko girl. Incidentally, your kidnapping was an event that preceded that meeting. For the sake of your sanity, you tried not to think that it took you getting kidnapped to get him to move. Still, he could use some advice. You suggested that he take,

>You
>Kyouko

As a date.

Her full name was Toshino Kyouko. She also goes by the Slumlord of the Strange. At least, these days she does. Back then, she was some nobody. She was also the first person that could walk away under her own power after playfully punching the Accelerator. Apparently, her Ability was some kind of freaky regeneration. She was boisterous, loud, rude, violent and generally a wild child of some description. That was why she was not the best choice for him as a date. With her ruled out that left only one other choice, you. Or you could stop lying to yourself and admit that Yomikawa-sensei or Yoshikawa-sensei could also fit the bill.

It wasn’t like you could compete with them after all. The former was your homeroom teacher and had one day mistook him for you. You were later told it was a terrifying day on campus. The latter was technically his guardian and very involved in his past. There was no way you could compete with their adult charms. If anything, you just wanted to curl up somewhere and disappear. That thought was interrupted by a clap on your back. He wanted your attention because he knew. Being able to figure out the other’s personal tells worked both ways when you were living together. He stopped you from retreating in to yourself, that destructive spiral, that dark corner you found yourself relapsing in to from time to time.

“Remember your words,” he reminded you.

Yeah, you remembered them. It was what you told him after he lost a fight with his teacher. You were just so exasperated with him at the time. It was how you perfected that look in the first place.

“You can’t just deflect everything. That’s just running away from reality,” you repeated.

Last you heard, he won the rematch. Speaking of teachers, maybe they could teach you, and him, how to play poker. He both of you detoured to see,

>Yomikawa-sensei
>Yoshikawa-sensei
>>
>>36869397
Actually, you lost a foot, then bled out. I'm not sure who keeps perpetuating that myth.

There was only one other adult you’d trust in teaching, and that was Yomikawa-sensei. Besides, you got the feeling that she was a worldly adult. She tended to mistake between the two of you, comically talking about how Accelerator didn’t apply make-up properly, or how you weren’t manly at all. Now that you thought about it, poker was a game with some amount of deception right? You could take advantage of that, just as you could use a laugh. If you remembered correctly, tonight she’d be hanging out with her other friend and homeroom teacher, Komoe-sensei.

“Oh Yuriko-chan,” she greeted Accelerator, “And the other Yuriko.”

“Good evening Suzushina-chan,” the tiny teacher couldn’t make the distinction either but hid it better.

He looked annoyed, even more when you started explaining your request. The mischievous smiles the teachers were giving him were probably not helping in any case.

“Oh ho, what’s this? Yuriko’s got the guts to ask you out to a party?” Yomikawa-sensei turned to her colleague, “I win! Pay up!”

“B-b-but, but, but that’s forbidden love,” her colleague complained.

“I know.”

That was how you figured out they were doing it on purpose. Well, at least it wasn’t going to be boring tonight.

Interlude End. We resume next week on Friday.
