You are John James Green, mutant vagrant.

You run your fingers along the edge of the plain, unmarked envelope in your hands. You haven’t opened it yet – you’ve been too busy thinking, and the weight in your hands has a way of helping to settle your thoughts, focusing them in one spot. The cold moves over you, your nose prickling at the diesel-stink of a passing bike.

The Phantom’s words keep finding handholds in your brain, and you go over them again and again and again.

“This girl’s name is Laura Kinney, isn’t it?” You felt a little sick when that came out. “She’s wanted by SHIELD, in connection to a number of missing persons cases going back as far as 2008. Why is she here?”

You managed to convince her that calling up SHIELD (Jesus Christ, SHIELD) would be a bad idea, but she still looked suspicious when you left. You don’t know what to do. You promised that the situation wasn’t whatever she thought it was, and she promised not to tell anyone, but… you could taste the uncertainty, feel it hovering in her breath, like an imp perched in the air between the two of you, silently breeding its discontent.

Fumbling nervously with the paper, you tear open the envelope. Inside is $700, cash, and a note clarifying that another 700 would be provided once the Agency had received its payment from Mr. Kamar. Too bad you’re in no mood to appreciate it.

Oh, and she told you that Chat had been asking after you that morning, too. Hardly seems consequential now, though.

This.

Frankly our play card against calling shield is that Laura was previously working under the facility (maybe we could sell facility info to shield?), and that turning her over would be a quick way to a dissection table.

I don't know if talking about SHIELD to Laura will do much good. It will jut make her worry. Chances are she will disappear into the night to not get JJ involved. Though maybe not.

See if anyone from the agency is following us. She's not gonna let a lead like this just walk away.
>>
>>36860363
Right now we are way too valuable for the agency to give up. Invisible man will let them do some missions that are normally plain impossible.
>>
>>36860368
Agreed. If we mention it the extent should be getting her to teach us, Bishop and maybe the others how to avoid that level of being hunted.

>[X] Visit Peter
>[X] Talk to Laura

You’re painfully aware of Laura watching you, her eyes studying you in silence, as the two of you plod your way down the street. The Phantom had said SHIELD was after her for cases going back to 2008, which would make her… eight, or around that, at the time? The thought of that makes you extremely uncomfortable, and you imagine that Laura can smell it.

“Laura…” You pause. You’re not sure what you want to say. “Why would SHIELD be after you?”

She answers quickly, and without trepidation. “Because I have killed many people.”

You flinch a little. Yeah, you know that, but…

“…That… that wasn’t really your fault, though, right? You didn’t have a choice…?” You sound a little hopeful at the end there, as though she’s about to explain to you that, actually SHIELD just wants to make sure she gets a proper childhood and an education and a pat on the back. That’s not the case, though, and you pretty much know it.

“I still killed them.” She says, quietly.

You guess so. You don’t like that she just leaves it at that, though.
>>
>>36860738
me thinks he is one of the folks that quit following because sonic scream lost

>>
>(2/2)

“Do they know what you’re in the city?” You ask, eventually.

She considers it for a moment before answering.

“They did. SHIELD will assume that I am operating under standard procedure, however, and if I were, I would have left some time ago.”

That sounds like ‘maybe’.

You shuffle along in silence. Eventually, she speaks up.

“Do you believe that she will inform them?”

You shake your head. No. Well, you’re not sure. Maybe? She didn’t want anything to do with the Astrovik case, did she? But Astrovik didn’t have a trail of missing-presumed-dead victims rotting in his wake.

“I don’t… I don’t think so.”

Veering aside on your path home, you head further up into Queens. You guess you’re somewhat curious about what Chat wanted.

Unable to fully wring the suspicion from your mind, you make sure to listen closely for a repetitive set of footsteps in your wake, or a smell that just won’t fade away. You trust the Blonde Phantom, mostly, but trust is bulwarked by verification. Creeper taught you that.

You don’t think you catch anyone out of the ordinary moving along the nearby streets. That strange, internalized vision comes to you again, sketched from the ripples of foots on pavements, and for a moment you swear you can ‘see’ – like, in your brain – the chubby woman cooking nearby the window of her nearby apartment, and the man reaching for his dropped keys a few meters behind, and… and a lot of things.

A low, dull ache settles in the back of your brain, where it remains for the next few minutes.

“You think…” Laura turns toward you, causing you to pause mid-sentence. “You think we should be working out more, or something? Getting more prepared, or whatever…”

“Yes.” Is her immediate answer. You smile a little – you kinda expected a ‘maybe’ or a ‘if you feel that way’.

You suppose it is logical. If anything, this whole thing has had you thinking a little bit about how… well… balled up you’ve been, like you’re hiding in the Scar. There’s Laura’s Facility out there, and Creeper, and Roxxon, and about every crook in this corner of the city looking to push Jack, and you’ve been… tentative about it all.

You glance at your watch as you approach Peter’s porch, making a quick note of the time.

>14:46 PM

Cool. You didn’t want to be out all too late today.

As you make your way up to the entrance, your early warning system crackles along your spine, and you step back just in time to avoid being floored by the door as it swings open. Peter emerges, rushing out as though he’s in a hurry, and grinds to a sudden stop at the sight of you, his eyes widening.

“…JJ?”

You blink.

“Peter.”

He stares for a second, and then glances past you, at Laura. “Hey, Laura.”

She nods in response.

“Uh…” He swallows. The way he’s standing, it’s almost like he’s hiding the schoolbag slung over his back from you, like it’s full of acid or something. You’re something of an expert on matters such as this, having performed similar maneuvers while running drugs for Creeper. Yep, you're the drugs expert, that's you. “Hey, um, I… I’m kinda in a hurry, so…”

“No prob.” You cut in. He looks really worried about something. “I just heard that Chat was asking after me at the Agency, that’s all. Was wondering what’s up.”

He raises an eyebrow, immediately looking a little displeased. What’s that about?

“Oh.” That’s not a happy ‘oh’. “Uh… it’s… it’s nothing, she just wanted to ask you for this favor for me, but it’s fine, I’ve got it.”

Hey, that’s okay. You can do favours. So long as they’re not, like, sexual. Maybe if Peter was a hot chick or could turn into a hot chick and definitely was a little older why is this train of thought still running?

“Oh?” You shrug. “That sounds fine by me, man, what’s the problem?”

Peter smiles politely and sort of… squirms a little.

“It’s really not something you need to worry about...” He waves a hand as if passing it off as something to be brushed aside. That is generally what people do when they’re embarrassed about something. You do that quite a lot. “I mean… you’d… I understand why she’d ask you to help, but it’s not fair to rope you in. It’s not your problem.”

He seems to actually mean that.

“At least tell me what’s wrong.” You smile broadly. “I pretty much owe you, anyway. For multiple things.”

His shoulders sagging slightly, he gives in.

“Well… it’s this friend of mine.” You notice that he hesitates a little around the word ‘friend’. “A while back, he sorta fell into a drugs thing, and he did some stuff I’m pretty sure nobody wants a repeat of. I think he might be at it again, and I’m worried about him, but I’m…” He pauses, as though he doesn’t know how to say the next bit without it coming out wrong. “…really, really busy right now. Chat just thought you could keep an eye on him.”

Still pretty damn smart when talking about the animal kingdom on the whole. Easily smart enough to convey info and receive instructions to someone they can talk to.

Really the best thing to do with birds is track were a person goes during the day etc. I'm not advocating the animal talk power btw. Prefer the electro cloud since there might be an extrap for a mini healing field, which would be cool.

“Yeah, I can do that.” You say. “No prob.”

“Well, it’s… I mean, that’s really cool of you, but it’s still not your problem…”

Rolling your eyes a little, you put a hand on his shoulder. He tenses up very slightly.

“Look, it’s fine, and I owe you.” You shrug, and grin toothily, probably flashing your fangs a little more than necessary. “Besides, what’s the worst that could happen? I’m the Invisible Man, man.”

Except not as creepy. Or rapey. The Invisible Man was extremely rapey.

Peter thinks for a moment, before grudgingly agreeing to let you help. Though he doesn’t seem entirely happy about it, he does appear genuinely thankful.

“Thanks, JJ. You didn’t have to do this.”

You shrug again. Whatevs.

“What’s the kid’s name?” You pause. “I assume this is some kid at your school. Midtown, right?”

“Yeah.” Says Peter, nodding. “Harry Osborn. He won’t be at school today, but his address is…”

You note it down in your phone.

Osborn, Osborn, Osborn… Why does that name ring a bell?

“Thanks again.” Says Peter, smiling halfheartedly. “Now, uh, I really do have to split…”

You say goodbye, and Peter guns down the street at a surprising pace. You sometimes forget that he’s about as strong as you are.

“That address is in Manhattan.” Notes Laura, a hint of suspicion underlining her voice. “It seems strange that a teenager from that borough would go to school with one from here.”

Yeah. Yeah it kinda does.

Specially considering how shaky the basis for their accusations are, I mean she committed murder, yes, but she was also a white underage girl that was forced through torture and psychological conditioning to perform said deeds.

If it got out that SHIELD would prioritize her detainment over her employers when she hasn't been causing trouble for a while, it would destroy SHIELD's image for decades.

Not to mention it would completely ruin all mutant relations they have and cause shitload of paranoia that could lead into hundreds of new supervillains.

1) SHIELD doesn't know that Laura stopped working for the facility.

2) SHIELD's job is to protect people from super-human's. They will lock her up if they think she's a threat. How she got to be the way she is doesn't matter to them. No matter how nice a guy Bruce Banner is, SHIELD would up kill the hulk in a second if they knew how.

3) The public HATES mutants. The government regularly locks up mutants that have committed no crimes. Half of the general public thinks the only good mutant is a dead one. There will be no public outcry if they kill Laura.

>[X] Nah.

Well, you guess you can shadow this kid at school tomorrow. For now, you feel like getting back to the Scar, maybe follow up on your resolution to push more iron and be more x-treme.

You head back home, the sun slipping out of prominence as you approach the jagged borders of the Scar. You can’t help but think about all the things you’ve been putting on hold – the Facility, Creeper, Roxxon. Your dad. And then there’s Joseph out there, too, that creepy psycho. Hopefully he’s genetic destiny’d his way straight outta town by now, though you sort of doubt it.

No. You don’t just doubt it.

The quill-like scales smattered along your back twitch attentively, as if privy to a change in the wind. You can feel him out there, somewhere.

Shivering a little, and not just at the cold, you pick up your pace, glancing down at your watch.

>Time: 15:50 PM
>Hunger Level: 4

Getting late. Day went by like a blur.

As you make your way through the scattered ruins of the Scar, you recall the small camp you spotted earlier today. Those guys, whoever they were, had set up pretty close to your little hole in the ground.

1) SHIELD doesn't know that Laura stopped working for the facility.
She's been leaving a trail when JJ was cocooned. They know somebody has killed gangbangers in New York due to distinct claw marks and adamantium traces.

2) SHIELD's job is to protect people from super-human's. They will lock her up if they think she's a threat. How she got to be the way she is doesn't matter to them. No matter how nice a guy Bruce Banner is, SHIELD would up kill the hulk in a second if they knew how.
Yet they also try to not escalate a situation if they can for the same reason.

>3) The public HATES mutants. The government regularly locks up mutants that have committed no crimes. Half of the general public thinks the only good mutant is a dead one. There will be no public outcry if they kill Laura.

This implies full disclosure is in the best interest of politicians, and that they wouldn't just want to white-wash things, because it might backlash into a variety of other horrible things that their eyes are turned from.

>[X] Train with Laura.

You can check up on them later. Right now, you’ve got other priorities.

“Hey, Laura.”

She turns to stare up at you.

“Want to get started on that stuff I mentioned earlier?” She holds her stare in quizzical silence, and you clarify: “The, uh, the training stuff.”

It sounds faintly ridiculous when you say it out loud. You don’t know why – it’s exactly what you should be doing, really. You’re not going to learn this crap by yourself, and if your recent encounters have been evidence of anything, it’s that you don’t lack power, you lack experience. You fought the Sinister Six like you were scrapping with some homeless kid over the last bit of leftover burger, and while it didn’t get you murdered via Doctor Octopus, you can’t imagine what you’d done had Electro taken notice of your antics.

She nods slowly.

“Yes.” Her gaze swivels aside of you, focusing straight ahead. “I… would like that.”

Cool.

The two of you walk a little further past the station, Laura keeping an eye out for a nice clearing. Eventually you find a little bowl in the rubble where the snow has layered into a stark, white blanket. Laura stands opposite you, shaking her wrists, her body moving sinuously as she takes herself through the motions of limbering up. She’s really flexible.

Eventually, she straightens up, and stares straight at you.

“Your greatest weaknesses are not in your offensive capabilities.” States Laura, rolling her neck. “In this area, your powers make up for your lack of discipline.”

…Thanks? Thank you, Laura? Was that a compliment, or just half of one?

“You may not have noticed, but your flesh is reinforced to an extent, also.” What? “You have been shot multiple times, but the ability of projectiles to penetrate your musculature is marginally lower than average. You also possess a healing factor, which makes flesh wounds less of a concern.”

They still hurt though.

You hope this session won’t involve flesh wounds just because they tend to seal themselves up relatively quickly. You may heal like her (and, considering what you’ve seen her bounce back from, you’re not entirely sure of that), but you don’t have Laura’s apparent indifference to pain.

“You still have the basic weaknesses of any creature with an integral skeleton, however. Snapping, twisting, and shattering joints requires comparatively little penetrating power, and complex systems require longer to regenerate.”

Haha. Okay. You… you’re not sure you like where this is going.

Laura falls down into a low, predatory stance, her arms spread wide and fingers curled in a manner reminiscent of talons. All in all, it sorta reminds you of a swooping bird.

“Today you will learn where your weak points are, how to prioritize them, and how to defend them.”

>shamefur dispray

She comes at you in a flash.

You try to swing at her as she closes in, but she swoops under your failing arm, shifting in close. Your danger sense screams at you from all directions as she lowers herself into a sweep, her leg slicing through the snow. You leap over it, raising your arms to bring them down on her, but she moves like a snake, slipping to one side as you commit yourself to the downward arc.

Her left leg lashes out. You feel your eyes bulge, a sudden, debilitating wave of pain crashing through you as your ankle crumples inwards.

You yelp involuntarily and swing your arm about at her, panicking, but she moves with it, catching it at the joint.

Snap.

You scream.

Your arm burning, you stagger about, awkwardly trying to shift yourself off your broken ankle, and you feel her fingers slip between yours, holding them almost gently.

They she pulls back, and pushes against your shattered elbow with her other palm.

You cannot describe this pain.

Within moments, she’s forced you to the ground, your nose raking through the snow.

“Jesus… Jesus Christ…”

The pressure of her grip relents, and you take a moment to just breathe, the pain passing over you in waves. You can feel tears, hot and shameful and huge, edging at the corners of your eyes. Laura sits down beside you, holding her knees together with her arms.

“That is what I meant.”

After you spend a little while longer rasping into the snow, she speaks up again, her tone somewhat less even this time.

“Are you…” She stops. “…Can you continue?”

“It’s fine.” You hiss through the pain. “Not like anyone I’m fighting for real won’t do worse, right?”

She nods, but doesn’t look all too convinced. Could be the way you’re spasming very slightly.

You wait for several agonizing minutes while your bones realign and snap back into place, excruciatingly aware of every shatter, every tear, and every spilt slip of marrow. The ghost of the pain lingers after your body has corrected itself, like a reminder.

Eventually, you take position again, still feeling the echo of Laura’s attention in your joints.

“Ready?” She says, looking very slightly away from you.

You nod.
>>
>>36865869
It was at this moment that JJ realized that he was, in fact, not ready.
>>
>(2/2)

She comes in again, moving like a shadow over the snow. You recall the way she dodged your initial flail, and you duck under the swift jab she aims at your throat, her fist parting your hair just very slightly. You feel a surge of adrenaline lift you up, propelling your musculature, and you ready yourself to bull into her from a low angle, put your superior strength to use.

Then your danger sense sparks, and her knee ascends into your face, caving in your nose and filling your mouth with the sharp, coppery taste of blood.

You sputter, crashing to the ground, and her leg is waiting for you. The moment your hands touch the snow, she grinds her heel into your wrist, and you feel the bone break instantly, the force spreading a net of fractures through your upper arm. You scream, and collapse on to one side.

The tip of her boot slams into your chest, heaving you over onto your back and pushing the breath from your lungs. Your vision blurs, frayed with red.

“Stop!” You hold up one hand, coughing out the words. “Stop!”

She stops.

You spend a moment recovering, feeling your bones pressing themselves back into shape. Christ.

You glance up at Laura.

Her eyes are wide, as though in shock, and her arms are wrapped across her shoulders like a blanket.

“I… I am sorry.” She looks at you with a hint of recollection in her eyes, and… something almost like fear? “I don’t think we should continue today.”

To be fair it was a combination of the desire to stress test their prototype and office politics (several powerful people wanted the X23 project to be a failure).
>>
>>36866350
They were teaching her to be immune to pain and martial arts at the same time. She's almost indestructible but bullets still hurt and it would be counter productive for them if she stopped fighting because of a non-fatal blow.

If you haven't noticed it worked really well.
>>
>>36866350
The whole project was retarded. Instead of building a well adjusted soldier indoctrinated with a huge amount of loyalty, they tried to build an assassin that would do whatever the person on the other end of the radio told them and could be compelled to murder literally anyone in an instant.

Because it's more efficient to have someone actually teach her, rather than letting her blindly stumble her way through self-teaching CQC while being attacked. Whatever she taught herself wouldn't be as good as what they could get experts to teach her either, but they probably hammered that out afterwards. Probably using another strange method.

>>

>>
You flinch.

What’s wrong?

“I’m fine.” You insist, despite all evidence to the contrary. As if to punctuate your assertion, a low, dull pop emerges from your wrist, as the bones shift back into place. “I’ll heal. And… I guess I’m just rusty. Maybe I should be the one attacking, and I can learn some, I dunno, some basic defensive stuff from you?”

She is silent for a good long while. Eventually, you start to think that she’s not going to answer at all – she turns her face away from you and stares down into the snow, as if searching for something to concentrate on. Her fingertips are white with pressure where they dig into her shoulders, knuckles straining. It almost looks painful.

You lie there, the snow seeping into your coat, stinging gently at your cheeks, as she grips herself in silence.

“I don’t want to be like this.” She says, eventually, her voice trembling.

You haven’t heard her like this since… quite a while ago.

Flinching, you pull yourself up.

“I don’t want to be like this…” She repeats. “I don’t know what I want to be, but I don’t want to be like this.”

Slowly, tentatively, you fold your arms over her. She freezes – her tendons shuffle wildly under her skin, seeming caught between the urge to shirk away and the stillness of surprise. She’s warm, and her skin shakes against yours, her entire frame quivering minutely. You don’t know how long you stand there, but it seems like ages, the snow clustering down you like a halo.

She turns around. Her chest heaves, and you feel tears against your chest. You can do nothing but stand there. Your breath rises and falls, bright and sinuous against the mottled, cold grey of the Scar.

Eventually, she looks up at you, her cheeks streaked with tears and traces of snot clinging under her nose, and that, you think, was when you realized that you’d fallen in love.

ELECTROSTATIC
Level 2: JJ’s touch generates visible electrical arcs. Much stronger current, enough to cause people to smoke a bit after some touching. Will short out unarmoured electronics.

SHADOW FIELD
Requires: Level 4 Invisibility.
Cost: 2
Normally, JJ’s invisibility fails completely in moments of extreme exertion, physical trauma, or when he activates certain other abilities. This upgrade allows him to function in such situations with a muted form of invisibility – rather than being truly imperceptible, his features are blurred and his exact position becomes unclear, as if he’s being seen through mist.

NULL SHADOW
Requires: Level 4 Invisibility, Level 4 Enhanced Senses, Echolocation.
Cost: 2
This ability must be activated instead of Invisibility. It absorbs all sound waves that should strike or bounce off JJ, making him imperceptible on the auditory spectrum.

>>
ELBOW BLADES
Requires: Level 2 Claws & Fangs
Cost: 1
This ability allows JJ to protrude a pair of long, razor-sharp biological blades from his elbows. They have all the qualities that his current Claws & Fangs level bestows.

ELBOW SPINES
Requires: Level 2 Claws & Fangs, Elbow Blades
Cost 1
This ability allows JJ to extend his elbow blades atop a set of chitinous, spiny cords, roughly two meters in length. These cords are moderately prehensile.

FOREARM PLATES
Requires: Level 2 Claws & Fangs
Cost: 1
JJ becomes capable of protruding a set of armoured bone structures across his forearms and hands. These plates to not cover his joints, but they do provide a certain level of protection to this area, and can be used to block nasty attacks.

SPINAL TAIL
Requires: Level 3 Claws & Fangs
Cost: 2
JJ becomes capable of extending a highly prehensile, chitinous tail. It is moderately dexterous and possesses a serrated barb equivalent to his current level in Claws & Fangs.

ELECTROSTATIC EMITTERS (TAIL)
Requires: Level 3 Claws & Fangs, Spinal Tail, Level 2 Electrostatic Touch
Cost: 2
JJ’s tail becomes capable of delivering an electrical shock one level less powerful than that described in his current level of Electrostatic Touch.
