Interlude: Could have been a Dragon

You storm into your dormitory room in a worried huff. What happened earlier still has you unsettled, that lost little girl just disappearing like that with your wig. More than that, even after the girl was found, she seemed to have lost your wig.

So frustrating. Even if you’d been planning on looking at a new one, it might not be in your budget.

“Damn it,” you sigh and flop onto your bed.

Running your fingers through your vibrant green hair you look up and drag a heavy book tome down. Flipping through childhood memories you settle on a halloween costume you wore when your father was stationed in an American branch of the company. Your first time as a blonde, it's a fond memory dressing up in a store bought valley girl outfit. The beginnings of your infatuation with the style, and eventually getting into the Ganguro scene when you got back to Japan.

To think, that halloween, you were almost Maleficent.

Interlude End

Quest Start

You reach your hands out tentatively and lace you pad gloves fingers into the thick and mildly coarse fur so presented. Sasha insisted you pet Boris to finish off your pre fight socialization so he doesn't seriously hurt you in the spar.

As if. You could take this bear apart unarmed and unarmored, but here you are covered in protective padding. Hell, even the bear is padded. Boris is wearing large and flat padded glove, meant to receive impacts. Little more than wearable punching bags.

Admittedly, the situation presented to you is kind of underwhelming. Yeah, you're still standing in the shadow of the largest bear you have ever seen, but it isn't how you pictured sparring with a bear. Hearing that Sasha trained for boxing with a bear had conjured images in your mind of visceral violence in snow covered forests. Bloody spatter dripping from black hooked claws as they rake across dark skin in this vision of contest set in the Siberian wilderness, Sasha is shirtless columns of visible breath rising from the exertion. A rain of small fists buffeting bestial hide. Something epic in scope, a scene out of The Gray when Liam Neison had glass on his knuckles and lunged at a wolf.

Now...your imagined training between Sasha in Boris is changed. The slim and blonde muscle manlet wears the pink hooded sweatshirt from Punchout, and his bear is in grey sweats of the trainer bracing a heavy bag while...ugh. It's funny, but so much less interesting.

Anyway, back to petting this 1,800 pounds of somehow gentle muscle yet potential ursine fury that stands before you.
>>
>>36882538

Your name is Mikage Chiba, second year Highschool student age 15, and you are about to have a round of training with a bear in the back of a Veterinarian Clinic. This contest is being watched by your friends Kairi and Midori; and some acquaintances of yours who will soon be Sasha's classmates at Infinity Academy, Moe Ueda and Momoko Nakajima.

"Take as long as you need to feel comfortable before the fight," Sasha instructs.

I'd prefer shadow claws but I'm not sure our audience is privy to our magical abilities. Even with the subtle thing they'd notice claw hands.

Yes, I was thinking about that but worried about the time limit.

Well, its been thirty minutes, so we've got everyone who is voting on the OP, so then.

Time for a Final Destination.

While you are investigating with Boris with the Shintennou, what will you do?

Kamchatka Bears are brown bears weighing around 1800 lbs and are genial and usually non aggressive toward humans.

East Siberian Brown Bears max at 1500 or so and are fucking psychos.

Boris is the most adorable, given his weight and likely species of bear.

Besides, do you want to looks like a complete baby by backing down from something we dragged everyone to see?
>>
>>36883709
>>36883756
Well, the spell it is based on had that infusion being stone, which is where the natural attack came from.
>>
>>36884034
Exactly. We fought the evil bear. The standard one shouldn't even be a problem.

Though we did have the use of our claws at the time.. which are fantastic for CQC.
>>
>>36884062
We didn't have claws at the time, we just straight up wrassled the bear. Which turned out to be a little difficult.
>>
>>36884062
Except that for most shadows, evil makes them stupid. Boris might be quite a bit more dangerous in his true form.
>>
>>36884062
We didn't have claws during that fight. They're a much more recent spell pickup.
>>
You continue to pet the bear, moving around him, while he makes noises to indicate he is comfortable with the situation. Granted his pleased and comfortable noises would probably be terrifying to anyone else in this close a proximity. Sasha quietly begins to ease back from the two of you, eventually leaning against the inside of the fence adjacent to where the girls await beyond, awed.

Standing as he is, you barely clear his hip. He is a veritable giant of a bear. You didn’t know there were bears this huge in the world...and he seems incredibly friendly. Though as he occasionally leans into your petting and scratching, you are briefly visited by the fear of him simply toppling over onto you.

You mentally urge the phantoms of Kunzite and Zoisite still bound to you to investigate the bear as you had Sasha investigated earlier. As you complete your circle around Boris, you feel the weight of Zoisite’s presence return to the back of your mind.

<Princess, this beast is the same weird void of magical presence we sensed earlier within the boy,> he begins, <I believe they may both hold a fragment of the Golden Crystal you seek,>

-What of Kunzite?- you inquire after the lingering spectre of one of your father’s retainers in his past life.

<Kunzite-sama elected to investigate a strange feeling. He said he felt a presence neither beast or the crystal,> Zoisite’s voice echoes in your mind.

<Though I have found nothing from it,> the additional weight of the platinum haired phantom resumes its shelter within your mind.

You continue your socialization with Boris, he briefly tries to pat you on the head with the oversized punching pads his has secured over his paws. Its kind of adorable...for a creature almost thrice your height standing.

Well initially I was expecting something a lot darker. The initial interaction with Luna being a pace setter. It was not. Things have turned out a lot brighter and I'm amazed that some of those combat situations turned out as well as they did.

My knowledge of the Sailor universe is cursory at best but you do a good job of not letting that alienate people. You don't rely on peoples names to infer the personalities, you write them. So I don't feel as if I'm constantly missing something.

I'm enjoying Mikage more for her flaws than her virtues. It really seems to bring her to life. Panic attacks and will rolls for socialization.

I caught with the majority of the threads a few days ago so I'm not sure if my view is still, "fresh." But this is what comes to mind.

I'm looking forward to combat, whether it be with Boris or whatever monsters happen to be lurking.

The kitten thread was adorable. Sorry for the wall of text.

~You are so fluffy,~ you exclaim in what is to those who know you presently an uncharacteristic high and excited tone as you wrap your arms around his leg and hug him from the side before calling over to Sasha as he stands a fence apart from but beside the girls, ~Sasha, Boris is the most adorable bear I’ve ever petted,~

He looks at you, with a certain amount of disbelieved shock at the conclusion you’ve reached. Moe laughs while Momoko remains silent and observant. Midori looks a little embarrassed, perhaps by association with you. Kairi seems to be stealing glances at the ring on her finger, distracted from your antics, perhaps in the middle of some kind of counsel with her mentor spirit.

With a sigh you release and back up from the bear, and raise your padded fists in a combat pose. With a quick look you shoot Sasha a nod and smile before turning back to Boris. You are ready for this. Boris seems to nod happily and raise his pawed hands to present you with the two flat surfaces of the punching pads, while lowering them far enough for your to strike head on.

~Alright Boris, care to spar a bit?~ you say in a friendly tone.

Sasha shouts something out in Russian and the massive bear before you tenses up, coiling in on himself and braces. His mouth shuts tightly and his eyes focus on you.

I'm now picturing a large bear being confused by the change of pace from regular boxing moving to relatively easily brush us loose, only for us to scrabble around on him and end up riding his shoulders to Boris' greater confusion.
>>
Feet planted firmly before your friendly foe, you explode into motion and thrust a single punch forward. Veering toward the outside edge of the glove, you seem to manage to force Boris into quick action as he on instinct reaction tries to center your punch against the mit. Your fist twists with force and impact, and from his quick repositioning his catch of the punch presses back into his mass. He did not expect the force of your strike.

Just as well, using his seeming momentary confusing you duck under the arm and shoot both arms up and wide. Catching his forearms with one arm, the force of your rising engagement catches Boris off balance slightly more. Wrapping one arm around him, you redirect your upward velocity back around and somehow manage to send the bear toppling with you to the ground. Wrapping your other arm around it and your legs around his upper arm several feat shy of his shoulder you arch your back as you hit the ground.

“????!” Sasha shouts something in Russian you don’t quite catch while the girls cheer in surprise and amazement.

Boris seems confused and looks over to Sasha, who shouts something else and he roars in response.

You relax your back and kip up between his arm and torso on the ground. Even standing, you punch straight forward and tag the space between his arm and shoulder, which he fails to block in time with his other mit. It flusters him and as you pull back you elbow him in the shoulder, to throwing him off his game just a bit more, he shakes it out with a lazy and annoyed roar before you hop back and tighten your stance, like a coiled spring.

Boris rises slowly, leaving several openings, but you think you’ve deviated far enough from his trained routine and impressed your audience. Once fully righted though, Boris’s has his mit padded paws raised wide and out. They no longer occupy the active defense positions, nor are they low enough for your to tag.

You feel a sudden sense of foreboding, as though he’s about to make his first aggressive move of the fight.

You know something is coming, so you pull into yourself and raise your padded fists up and stay light on your feet. This isn’t the time to throw a punch, now is the time to put all your attention on Boris’s movements.

It pays off when he explodes into motion, stepping wide and swiping with the wide mit hand. The rush of displaced wind rushes past you as you lean back, if that had connected…

No time to dwell on it as a second one comes at you from the other side pushed forward to compensate for your dodge. Ducking under it at the last second, you smile that you were able to keep up with him, though this fight won’t go anywhere if you spend all your time dodging.

Your attention is solely on your opponent, but you feel something strange as the last attack misses. The world slows down and you feel there was something trailing after Boris’s strike. For an instant in this odd slowed space, you see another blurry shape superimposed upon Boris.

It vanishes and time resumes.

-Zoisite! Kunzite! What the hell was that?!- you think to the guests in the back of your mind.

<I am uncertain, Princess,> Kunzite admits, <Whatever it was, it is again beneath the surface of the void my senses cannot pierce,>

-Oh well, gotta keep this going,- you huff and throw a punch into Boris’s hip.

It strike true, but without the benefit of catching him off guard, you find yourself bereft of the extra oomph you’ve been accustomed to dealing. So you lean into it, eventually bracing against his leg to try and force him over much like you had earlier. Its more a misdirection of his own shifting weight as he prepares to swipe at you, but you manages to resist your attempt to topple him, barely.

And then, he swipes at you. His first attempt is wide and unwieldy, leaving a gaping opening. You shoot up and take it, leaping and landing a solid hit below his jaw somewhere in his neck. Boris roars in pain from the solid and direct hit as his other arm swipes to the side, and the padding catches you across the middle.

>You take 15 vitality damage

You’re about to respond in kind when Sasha yells something out.

The bear pauses and roars in his direction. Sasha is stomping over to the two of you and Boris appears demure somehow and hangs his head.

“Alright, this spar is over,” he waves his arms and pats at Boris’s side.

The huge bear leans forward and back onto all fours. He drags his paws against the ground until the mitts come off with Sasha’s help unfastening them.

You lower your fists and sigh as he leads Boris closer to you while petting the back of his neck. He repeatedly makes a few choking cough sounds before he regains his usual pleasant bear sounds.

Sasha...he just looks at you oddly. Like he doesn’t understand what he’s looking at. Its unnerving.

Heh. Who is prey now tiny Russian?

Just because it's a prey animal doesn't mean it's not dangerous. You don't see wolves taking on elk 1v1 for a reason.

While Sasha is still staring at you, trying to figure something out, you surge forward and hug the bear with the cutest and girliest sound you didn’t know you could personally muster. It reminds you of the kind of noise our inner vapid super bitch might make, and considering she’s no longer an inner portion of yourself and just you now...it feels natural. Boris seems confused by the sudden shift from near bloodthirst you had been exuding to this unmitigated adoration and affection. Sasha seems equally confused.

You don’t care so much about the weird presence, because frankly everything is weird these days so you’ll focus on the positives. That was FUN.

~You are the fuzziest fight bear ever, Boris,~ you exclaim as you nuzzle at the back of his massive head near his ear, ~and that was super fun!~

You lean over and shoot Sasha a sly grin, almost begging him an unspoken question about fluffy little prey animals. Boris leans into your appreciative cuddle and you pleasantly squeeze him while rubbing the area you punched in his neck gently while cooing softly that you’re sorry for hurting him. Like, so totally sorry.

...you need to start working to weed that word out of your vocabulary if its going to come to you so naturally now.

Anyway, petting this super cute bear. Though, you feel an odd prickling. A tingling sensation at the base of your neck. Goosebumps that pass as quickly as you noticed them.

As you fall into your soothing and comforting rhythm of the ridiculously large beast that is almost twenty times your mass, you weave your energies and target your magic to spread a soothing of the wounds you inflicted into Boris, and perhaps dislodge the crystal shard you expect resides within him. After a few moments of this continued contact your spell is complete.

Boris makes a pleased sound as the likely ache in his neck and throat fade slightly under the touch of your fingertips, and at the point of contact something happens. Buried in fur, so no one else notices, something surges out of your new ursine friend. By touch you are familiar with the material, and the unfocused energies inside of it call to you.

“That was...insane,” Sasha finally manages to explain and pull himself from his stupor.

You nod and smile as you pull away from Boris, only for your eyes to be drawn right back. As you pulled the crystal shard away from the bear, you experienced the scent of pure and unadulterated anger and rage from your immediate surroundings. Eyes darting to Sasha, he seems more confused and impressed than anything else. Boris looks like a happy bear.

~Yeah, that’s me,~ you chuckle nervously, ~Insane,~

“A poor choice of words,” he shrugs and rolls his eyes before regarding your sternly with his arms crossed, “or spot on. This was a spar. What was that? It was amazing, yes, but it was incredibly reckless,”

Hm... this situation had me wondering just how many ranks Sasha has in Handle Animal. And the answer appears to be zero.

For someone who regularly trains with a bear, this seems odd. Maybe Boris has mad ranks in Handle Human?
>>

Boris.. is not animal? Is bear. Is okay for you not to be understanding this. Such is life in Soviet Russia.
>>
>>36889076
>Hug Boris tighter, and apologize to Sasha. Fighting just gets you so riled up
>>
Releasing Boris, you turn to face Sasha abruptly. You’ve already begun stripping the over padding he strapped you into as you close the distance to him and raise up your hands with the pleased and smug smile on your face. He appears to be about to launch into a diatribe about taking the situation seriously when you lay a hand on your shoulder and bring the index finger of your other hand to your lips to gently shush him.

He appears put off and confused by this until the hand snakes away from your lips and runs to the joint of his jaw and up behind his ear. Sasha freezes up at the sudden casual contact. You think one or more of the girls might be shocked you’d behave in such a way.

You begin the slow process of concentrating this spell into him and simply ask him.

~Hey,~ you ask plainly, ~What’s that behind your ear,~

This pose is held for nearly half a minute. Sasha’s already dark complexion reddening with embarrassment and perhaps something else. You smell the rage nearby, tinged now with fear. Rapidly it seems to be flitting about the area. You get the psychic impression of desperation and worry, but it fades back into unbound anger.

It doesn’t concern you now, as you finish your spell and pump the restorative energies into the boy. His embarrassed and blushing face shifts to something else as the sensation probably similar to his experience with your other healing spell courses through him. A tension he didn’t realize he was carrying is undone and the weight of the fragment rests between your fingers.

Retracting your hand, he watches as you flash him the gleaming shard with a smile. This is awesome. You feel like a million yen. He is confused. He might be a little angry. He is definitely frustrated.
>>
>>36889542

“What just happened?” asks Moe of the other girls as Boris curls up and tries to sleep somewhere behind you.

“I’m not sure we’ll ever truly know,” deadpans Kairi.

Momoko yelps.

“He’s sooo cute! I want to pet Boris too!” the other pink haired girl exclaims.

“Is it wrong I kinda wish I could do that,” Midori sighs before clarifying herself to Kairi and Moe, “Not the stupid magic trick, fighting a bear like that,”

The floating anger vanishes.

~Ah, this was fun,~ you smile, ~Next time we should have some one on one. I mean, you still want to spar against me again, right?~

Sasha composes himself and shakes off his embarrassment.

“Of course I want to spar against you,” he scoffs, “Though given your manners it might just turn into another street fight,”

~Oh, I don’t know about that. I think I’ll be able to pull a few moves like here. I probably have a much better chance of pinning you than I did Boris,~ you smile and walk past him to the latched door in the enclosure fence.

Sasha remains behind you a bit stunned as you confidently walk. With a quick command you direct Kunzite and Zoisite to investigate the presence of anger you smell flitting about. However, it seems to have vacated the immediate vicinity as they notice nothing. More to the point, they lack your ability to smell these feelings and cannot pinpoint a location to investigate for the presence you described.

However while you fiddle with the latch, Kunzite has something positive to report.

<Since he was no longer shrouded as this morning, I took the liberty of reviewing the boy again for compatibility,>

-And?-

<He is a viable host candidate for Kunzite-sama!> Zoisite happily interrupts.

<Yes, I was getting to that,> he says in exasperation.

<You were taking too long, lover,>

Casting a look back toward the still stunned boy and speak a bit more plainly, and call to the natural result of your exertions.

You are just too much fun. Speaking of fun, all this excitement has made me hungry. Up for some food?~

This shakes him from his stunned expression.

“Uh...I mean,” he composes himself, “You aren’t trying to get me to buy you another meal, are you?”

~Perish the thought,~ you turn your nose up, ~Aside from special circumstances, a girl should only expect a guy to pick up the tab when he asks her out,~

“Oh, so you’re buying this time,” he chides, “or are we just covering ourselves?”

~Err...I didn’t mean...yeah. You know what,~ you grab onto that Miki confidence, ~Sure. I’ll buy you dinner as thanks for this amazing experience and as an apology for roughing up your amazing bear of adorableness,~

Before you can step over the threshold, Momoko bursts into the enclosure.

“Please! Please let me pet Boris!” she pleads.

As Sasha tends to the situation at hand with your pink haired former classmate, you exit the enclosure and are met with the scrutiny of Moe, Kairi, and Midori. Your two knights grant you a nod, well Midori nods but rolls her eyes, acknowledging a mission well done. A brief telepathic rundown reveals they noticed nothing unusual during your fight.
>>
>>36890165
-Although,- Kairi explains, -Nephrite did notice something important...to someone’s past. He couldn’t get more of a read. I couldn’t either,-

Nodding at that you turn to Moe Ueda, who regards you curiously while deep in thought about something. After a while she shakes whatever concern she had off and regards you slyly.

“Pretty smooth there, Chiba-san. I had you pegged for some kind of wall flower, then you do a complete 180 and are taking him out,” she smiles in approval, “Gotta admit, he seemed like a cool guy and he’s an athlete, I was going to make a pass at him once he started class. Though I don’t think I can top bear wrestling as an attention getter,”

~No. Its not...we’re just friends,~ you become mildly embarrassed and try and downplay what just happened, ~Ands its not like we’re getting food alone...right?~

Though you aren’t sure if its for her benefit or for your own.

~I mean, I’m not ditching everyone. We can all grab a bite together. That makes it totally not smooth,~ you reason, ~Its a fact,~

Let's look at what you didn't pick!

>Damsel in Stress: The usually stuttery Scribe of the Keiko Sugimoto fan club goes off the rails and into a rant at the president's ever selfish behavior and how this weird change up means she has to scrap everything she's working on and drop what she's doing at this self important whim. So caught up in her moment of standing up for herself, she fails to notice what else is amiss until the fangs catch her neck.

Intelligence and Contingencies: the question is asked when the briefing resumes on where some of the new intel on the yet named enemy has come from. It is revealed that some came from the Mysterious Eclipse, while other parts came from the absent and retired Third Sailor Moon. Also discussed is the contingency plan should her reverse possession turn out to be an enemy ruse, even if the first has complete faith in her.

Hey don't look at me, I voted damsel.

Both of those look more interesting than what we picked.

Especially Intelligence and Contingencies, I wanted to see what their big plan regarding us was.

He said discussed...I highly doubt Art would just hand us the actual plan to take us down on a silver platter if we decide to go dark side. I think the whammy of that is that such a thing does exist, and the people we love and who love us are prepared to enact it.

I'm more curious what our codename is.

I'm hoping it's "Gaia".

Do you think Mikage would have a panic attack if she found out about that?

Because I certainly hope so.
>>
>>36894710
Doubt it. Mikage's panic attacks are mostly social. She's pretty much fine with any kind of actual fighting.
>>
>>36895031
Yes, but what if she learned that her own family was plotting against her, making a plan to take her down because they really don't trust her THAT much?

Especially if she didn't have context of knowing that everyone has a takedown plan, and she's not special for having it.

Usa reminiscing about how she remembers when she went Darkside, she destroyed an abandoned city.

Meanwhile Mikage got to be subtle. She's jealous.
>>
>>36895110
Seems to me like she would understand why they would do that,

I would think that Mikage, already having massive trust issues, would only further dive into despair if she learned about it without knowing beforehand that everyone gets their own contingency plan.
