You are Shee Hyul, rebel and psychic. Your world is ruled by inhuman creatures and this has gone on far too long, it’s time to fight back.

Character Sheet http://pastebin.com/fYSgcZdE
Rules http://pastebin.com/LEEi5A3u
Setting
QM Twitter https://twitter.com/anAspiringQM
QM Askfm http://ask.fm/AnAspiringQM

You are standing in an underground bunker that you have been told is a training facility for psychics. The lights and power seems to work and the technology is easy anything you’ve seen up-Hive.

You are in a large room called the *Activation Chamber* - it is full of complex computer arrays and 6 glass-and-metal tanks, each large enough to fir a person in, standing upright, some are full of murky water.
The tanks are labelled: Clairsentience, Metapsionics, Psychokinesis, Psychometabolism, Psychoportation, Telepathy.

With you is Charun, one of the Lago – a rabbit-like beastman called Clumsy, and the bunkers AI holographic image, which calls itself *the Teacher*.

Due to a DNA test you’ve been granted level 2 access to the facility, and Charun claims your father came here before, which may be why the place recognised you.

“Before I *activate* my powers” you say to Charun and the Teacher “What’s this” you gesture around you at the chamber “all about?”

Both speak at once. “It’ll let you use all your powers” says Charun.

The Teacher says “This is the place where recruits activate their psychic potential, later training is provided in another part of the facility.”

You pick up on that quickly enough “Wait” you say “You can teach me how to use my power?”

“Of course” says the Teacher “I have access to extensive training programs, records and analysis’ of psychic experts.”
>>
“Worry about that later” says Charun “right now you need firepower” he heads over to a computer terminal next to the chamber labelled *Psychokinesis* and starts pushing buttons, he manages to turn the thing on, but not much else, you roll your eyes at his hamfistedness with the terminal.

What do you want to do?

>I need to learn how to use my existing power first
>Activate a new power (options in next post)
>Ask about the history of this place
>Ask general information about this place
>Ask about your father
>Ask other question (what?)

Both Charun and the Teacher are on hand to answer questions.

I have been reading the feedback of players regarding how vague the addictions are, I am proposing the following new rules. This is a draft and so changes may be made and I am always open to suggestions.

Drug Addiction: You regularly use a variety of drugs including stimulants, sedatives and recreational drugs. The drugs you use are not harmful unless taken in very large doses. If you go too long without a fix, you don’t feel well and will take penalties.
You take penalties whilst using drugs.

Vampire Bite Addiction: You really like it when a vampire drinks your blood.
Ashley is the only vampire to have bitten you.

Feeding one addiction makes the other seem less painful.
XP: You gain 2 extra XP/thread (1 per addiction). More may be gained by roleplaying the flaws appropriately.

Drug Addiction Rules
If Shee takes drugs then she suffers a -2 penalty to all rolls for an hour – larger doses result in larger penalties.

If Shee does not take drugs for 3 days or more then she suffers a -2 penalty to both Agility and Fellowship.
After a week these penalties rise to -4; after a month they rise to -6.
Taking drugs or getting bitten by a vampire resets the clock.

Bite Addiction Rules
Shee feels the urge to get bitten at varying intensity depending upon how long it was until she was last bitten.
>>
Very Weak Desire: Shee feels this level of desire for up to 8 hours after being bitten.
Weak Desire: Shee feels this level of desire for up to 16 hours after Very Weak Desire ends.
Moderate Desire: Shee feels this level of desire for up to 3 days after Weak Desire ends.
Strong Desire: Shee feels this level of desire for up to 1 week after Moderate Desire ends.
Very Strong Desire: Shee feels this level of desire for up to 3 months after Strong Desire ends.
After 3 months of Very Strong Desire, Shees Bite Addiction goes dormant, being bitten by a vampire will immediately re-set the duration at Very Weak Desire.
Being around vampires will remove the dormancy modifier after enough time has passed.

When feeling any level of Desire, Shee must make a Willpower check when faced with the temptation of being Bitten by a vampire. The level of temptation varies with the level of desire felt – the stronger the desire, the less it takes to tempt her.
At Very Weak Desire only explicit requests/offers from vampires to bite her will trigger a roll.
At Very Strong Desire simply being near vampires will require a roll.

A failed Will roll means Shee will do anything she can to get the vampire to bite her. Shee will usually recognise the situation before it happens, giving her the option of leaving or taking drugs.

The Will roll DCs are as follows:

Base
Average vamp, DC 10
Trustworthy vamp, DC 15
Best friends, DC 20 (e.g. Ash)
Desire
Very Weak Desire, DC -0
Weak Desire, DC +2
Moderate Desire, DC +4
Strong Desire, DC +6
Very Strong Desire, DC +8
Circumstances
Some Reason Not To, DC -4 (i.e. anything that would make the request weird and embarrassing, such as being around friends)
Strong Reason Not To, DC -8 (i.e. vamp is untrustworthy, a known enemy, an asshole, something similar)
Recently taken Drugs (last 6 hours), DC -5
>>
Other
Forced, DC NA
Shee has no experience with non-consensual biting, a vampire trying to bite her by force does not trigger a roll.
Shee initiates, DC -1 (or lower)
If Shee initiates (requests) to be bitten, she feels more in control of the situation

Being Bitten
Being bitten is a very pleasurable experience for Shee (and the vampire) whilst being bitten, Shee is essentially helpless and insensible to the world around her.
Being bitten does damage to her hit points and Constitution. The Constitution loss recovers at 1 point per day, the hit point loss heals normally.

Questions and comments welcome.

Lewds
We’ve had some interesting write-in requests so far.
Smut is not the main focus of this quest.
I may write sex scenes when I feel like it. If I do they will be few and far between. I do not anticipate any happening soon.
Romance will not be present as an in-character option during the first 10 threads or so, romantic write-ins will be ignored until further notice.

XP
Last thread 6XP was gained, two anons suggested different XP uses, no one else commented. I have not yet spent this XP.

For anons help and feedback in writing the addiction rules, a further 5XP has been gained. Shee has 11XP unspent.

I will award XP for art, written work, rules help and ideas etc. If I think it merits such a reward.

“Tell me about this place” you say to the Teacher “Who built it, how long has it been here, why is it hidden out in the desert?”

“The facility was built in Imperial Year 9171” says the Teacher “It was built by the Government of Apollyon to train psychics, it was expanded during the Themi invasion. Its mission parameters required secrecy.”

“What mission parameters?” you ask

“You do not have the level of clearance required for that information” it responds.

Huh Ok, you try a different track “Who was in charge?”

“Professor Frederk Galterin was the first head of the facility” says the Teacher “Would you like to access his records?”

“Yes please” you say

“You do not have the level of clearance required for that information” it responds, then adds “one video log is unclassified, would you like to view it?”

“Uh sure” you respond.

The Teacher dissolves, to be replaced by a hologram of a taired looking man in rumpled and stained clothing, sat at a desk with his head in his hands. The detail is high enough that you can see he looks very old, and very tired. He’s sat slumped over with his head in his hands.

“Facility Log date, oh who the hell cares” he says in a tired voice “It’s over, we’ve lost. The Themi now control the entire world. The last planetary defences forces surrendered 6 hours ago, I’m putting the facility in lockdown. All of my students are dead, and I killed them. This is Professor Galterin, signing off.” The record ends and the Teacher reappears.

Well that was...informative.

“Before I get new powers” you say to both the Teacher and Charun “I need to know how to use my existing power first.”

“Follow me this way” says the Teacher, his hologram walks out of the room, occasionally flickering as different holoemitters are projecting him, sometimes losing focus as a broken one tries to project the image.

“This is wasting time” says Charun, as you follow the Teacher. Clumsy follows along, looking wary, but not as terrified as before.
>>
The Teacher leads to you what appears to be a combination of obstacle course and firing range, it directs you to a circular metal plate on the floor “please stand there.”

You don’t see any danger so you stand on the metal plate.

“According to my scans” says the Teacher “You have only just activated the Psychoportation power of Teleportation, would you like to undergo a beginners course?”

“How long will this take?” you ask

“The course will last 12 hours” responds the Teacher.

“Told you” says Charun.

“We can still get back today” you respond. Still, that’s the entire day.

What do you do?

While a strong reason not to indulging is strong, I think it shouldn't be that beneficial. A -8 counters the Very Strong Desire completely, which I think shouldn't happen. I'd say a -6 to the DC is more appropriate, a high number but not as high.

There's also the fact we can spend XP on Willpower to overcome the DCs without proper RPing. I suggest locking the flaws to the plot and stacking both in a single huge penalty once Shee has gone long enough without either.

It's more like, if Shee asks a vampire to bite her and he asks her for something unreasonable in return, its easier for her to say no.

The Will roll represents her keeping in control of herself and her desires, if she satisfies it on her terms, she has a little more control.

“Better to learn the power I have before I get a new one” you say to Charun. To the Teacher you say “yes, I’d like to take the Beginners course please.”

“Loading files” it says “initialising...hello and welcome to the Beginners Psychoportation (Teleportation) course....”

Over the next twelve hours you learn how to activate, and direct your powers. The Teacher explains how teleportation works, its limitations, and its pitfalls. You now know that teleporting whilst moving means you keep moving, that teleportation has no known maximum range, only your familiarity with a location limits where you can go. You spend most of your time on the theory, then move on to the practice section. By this time Charun has wandered off and Clumsy appears to be sleeping.

You practise teleporting, teleporting whilst moving, whilst holding different objects, whilst distracted, teleporting to places you cannot see directly and so on.

Towards the end of it you have exhausted your psychic powers, but you have a basic grip on how your teleportation power works, and how you use it.

[PE 0/11; You no longer critfail a teleportation on a roll of a single 1.]

Once you’ve finished and you sit down to get your breath back, really Teacher, teleporting whilst climbing a rope?

“Congratulations” says the Teacher “Shee Hyul you have successfully completed the Beginners Psychoportation (Teleportation) course, your learning transcript on your file has been updated and once you have been assigned to a class, your tutor will be notified.”

Charun comes back into the room, a dusty black folder under his arm “ready to head back?” he asks.

>There's also the fact we can spend XP on Willpower to overcome the DCs without proper RPing.
Not really? Willpower would increase the chances of successfully overcoming the DCs, but it caps out at a +4 modifier. There's still a reasonable chance of failure even with that mod.

>I suggest locking the flaws to the plot and stacking both in a single huge penalty once Shee has gone long enough without either.
The flaws are part of the plot. The addictions are already interlinked in a few ways, and the negative modifiers for both of them do stack. Are you asking for a DC modifier based on withdrawal level for drug addiction? I'm a bit confused.

“I want to see the Activation Chamber” you say to Charun, waking up Clumsy and heading back.

“You’ve got work tomorrow too” points out Charun “not enough time, we should be getting back.”

“Still” you say “just a look.”

Back at the Activation Chamber you ask the Teacher “How does this work?”

“Each of the Activation Chambers are used to stimulate the recruits brain to unlock their psychic potential” says the Teacher “this is done whilst the recruit is unconscious, to minimise discomfort.”

That sounds...wonderful.

“And why are some full of liquid?” you ask.

“During Activation uncontrolled psychic phenomena are common, as well as extreme physiological responses” says the Teacher “The fluid is a non-reactive energy dampening solution that prevents the psychic from harming him- or herself, or the equipment.”

Better and better...you think cynically

“So how long does it take?” you ask

“Each session takes 3 hours” says the Teacher “No more than 1 session is recommended every 7 days, and a success rate of 25% is normal.”

“And what, a failure is fatal?” you ask.

“Injuries occur in less than 2% of cases and fatalities occur in less than 0.1%” responds the Teacher “A session longer than 3 hours raises the chance of success, but also the chance of injury. Level 5 access is required to disable the safety protocols.”

Oh joy...

“So I can learn any power I want?” you ask.

“Each Activation Chamber allows you progress in a single Discipline” says the Teacher “But there is no guarantee as to which specific power you will gain.”

“We should get back” says Charun impatiently. Clumsy just watches all of this, he seems calmer.

“How do I raise my clearance level?” you ask the Teacher.

“Please file requests to raise your clearance level using Student Request Form A7-1B” says the Teacher “This can be submitted to your Tutor or the Head of IT Security.”

Great, yeah, I’ll do just that you think, or rather, I’ll just break into your security files myself when I have a chance and grant myself clearance.

But for now, it’s time to go.

“Let’s go” you say to Charun “I’ve got work tomorrow.”

The three of you get out of the Bunker, the door slowly closes behind you.

Clumsy asks “What now?”

“Now I’m going” you say.

“Oh ok” he says “see you next time I guess, and uh, my names Ferd, you lead an interesting life Shee” and with that he lopes off into the sand dunes.

You and Charun get back into his Truck, the other Lago are long gone and its after dark. There’s not much conversation on the way back, but Charun does say “You should have got some sorta firepower girlie.”

“I’d rather know how to use what I have first” you respond, Charun goes quiet again.

As the truck is pulling up to Dust Town Charun says “The Convoy will be here in three days, I’ll tell the others, you be ready.”

“Why are we doing this?” you ask.

“Money, supplies” he says “Can’t fight a war without ‘em.”

“No I mean, why fight the fae?” You ask

He just looks at you “Not their world” he says “It’s ours.”

“Really?” you ask “Or do you just want to kill them, if this was really for other people, wouldn’t we be doing other stuff to help them like, like hunting down the Gouger or something?”

As the truck stops Charun just shakes his head “One thing at a time” he says “One thing at a time. You get rested, stay out of trouble, and be ready.”

You get out of the truck, what are you going to do over the next few days?

“Sure, whatever” you say, stalking away from the truck to your hovel. But really...

At breakfast and after work the next day you start asking Dusters about the Gouger. You are easily able to gather the following information, by asking people, though as it’s the rumour mill, it might not be 100% accurate:
- The Gouger sometimes grabs victims off the street and sometimes breaks into people’s homes, meaning it’s likely not a dust ghost.
- The Gouger kills its victims by cutting them up with some sort of blade, *gouging* chunks from their flesh and always takes their eyes
- It’s killed over 30 dusters so far, and has spread its kills over an area of almost 30 square kilometres
- The Gouger prefers female victims, but has killed some men too
- The Gouger always attacks at night
- No one knows what it looks like, you’ve been given 8 different descriptions so far
- The Gouger drinks its victims blood; the sole survivor of the Gougers attack claimed he couldn’t see it properly but you’re told me had bite marks on his arms – perhaps you should speak to this *survivor* in person.
- You will know when it hunts due to its aura of fear, the lost souls it has claimed herald its arrival

Ok that’s enough, the rumours are getting more and more out there. Still, it could be a person, or a monster, a serial killer or an animal, and with the blood drinking, maybe a vampire...

It’s the evening of the next day, 2 days to go to the mission.

What do you do?

You don’t want to involve anyone else just yet, maybe when you are ready to catch the Gouger.

Talking to the survivor is probably the best first step. You ask around and eventually locate him.

He’s a duster. A guy named Kirian (no last name) who sometimes works in the hive transport depot, loading and unloading trucks.

You manage to track him down at a makeshift bar and ask him his story. He’s had a few drinks at this point, and so he happily tells you everything.

“It was terrible” he says “There I was, walking back home after a hard days work and out of the sky swoops down the Gouger. I was terrified of course and I hit at it and yelled and ran, this is where it bit me see.” He shows you his arms, both are sporting several bite-marks.

From your experience they look like vampire bits, though from a smaller mouth than Ashs.

You recall his teeth breaking your skin on your arms so gently as the two of you hid together, your eyes rolling up into your head in ecstasy as you begged him for more.

You snap back to the present, all of the bits look shallow, and some ragged, like he managed to shake of his attacker before they were able to properly draw blood.

Something about his story doesn’t add up, sounds like he wasn’t attacked by the Gouger at all. And yet...when he says the word *Gouger* you can see him seem obviously afraid, more so than most folk, could it be that he’s seen the Gouger and he’s trying to pass off his attack by something else as the real thing?

“What did it look like?” you ask

“Didn’t get a good look” he says, shaking his head “Could tell it was small, like a child, and it had wings.”

“Tell me again how it happened” you say, and as he relates his story again, you start picking out the inconsistencies.

“You went down Stall Street” you say “And you live in sector 8Y, that’s an odd detour.”

“Ah well” he says “Fell asleep on the bus, went past by stop.” Hmm, maybe, you don’t know the routes that well.

“Doesn’t the Gouger use knives?” you ask

“Sometimes” he says “Dunno why this time.” That doesn’t prove anything one way or another.

“When did this happen again?” you ask

“Just two nights ago” he says. That’s odd, the Gouger killed someone on Stall Street 3 nights ago, and most of its kills are 4-5 days apart, and never in the same place.

“How did the Gougers bites feel?” you ask

“Just like bites” he answers, shrugging “painful you know.”

“Really?” you ask casually, “no tingling, no odd feelings, I mean, it could be poisonous, maybe you should see a doctor.”

Kirian rubs his bites with his fingers, swallowing nervously. From the way his breathing quickens when he touches the scars, he’s either scared, or perhaps remembering a really good feeling from the bites.

“It’s funny” you say “All that yelling and no one came”

“Ah well” he says dismissively “Folk just mind their own business” he says. True, but the whole street? Unless he wasn’t yelling, because he didn’t want anyone else out there.

“You sure you go the night right” you say “I mean the Gouger did kill someone the night before it attacked you, seems odd.”

His eyes flicker back and forth and his mouth gapes a bit “Not talking to you no more” he says, and leaves the table.
>>
Dammit, you know he’s lying about something, what he saw, the night he was there maybe. And you’re pretty sure that he was bitten by a vampire, but you’ve never heard of a winged vampire.

Kirian won’t talk to you again alone, but maybe you can ask Dev or someone else to intimidate him into telling the truth, or ask Ash about winged vampires. Also its now getting late, you need to go to bed soon

You get out of this dive and once you’re sure no one else is around you text Ash.

I’m not actually going to type the conversation out in text speech, this is what it would be like in normal format.

-Hey Ash- you text –How are you doing? Know anything about winged vampires?-

-I’m good- he responds –and very funny, good one, who told you, Quinn, right?-

-Told me what?- you ask.

The reply is several minutes in coming, as if Ash is thinking about how to reply.

-Ok, if no one told you, winged vampires are a legend, like don’t behave and they’ll come and get you. I think some used to exist, but there was a clan war and they all got wiped out-

-Tell me the legend- you say –humour me-

-*Sigh* ok- he texts –Vampires can turn almost any humanoid species into True Vampires-

-Like Humans and Fae?- You ask

-Not like Fae- he responds –I mean like Humans, Minierens, Shozan, Kragorans, like them-

-What’re they?- You ask

-Sorry- he says –I forgot the fae edited the history files, ok the Core Empire is made up of lots of intelligent species not just humans-

-I didn’t know that- you reply

-Now you do- he texts –can I continue?-

-Sure, go ahead- you laugh a little at the frowny face he used.
>>
-Right, so Vampires can *turn* anyone mortal, but not magical, nornally. Didn’t stop one of them trying to turn a Celes, A Celestine? I can’t remember what they’re called, but like an Angel from the Syrnian Holy book, winged people, holy powers, like that. It worked, and anyone this vampire turn because like him, a mix of vampire *and* angel.
At first it was nothing, another weird clan of vampires with powers, but then the Graced declared war on the other vampires, said vampires had to be all wiped out. And that’s when we found out that their powers where far stronger than normal. Still as out-numbered as they were, they lost and were wiped out. But to this day the elders still have a big bounty out on them. To stop anyone cashing in on the legends I guess. Happy?-

What do you do?

-WHAT????-

-A guy who claims to have been attacked by the Gouger has what I think are vamp bites on his arms and describes his attacker as small and with wings. I don’t think he was attacked by the Gouger I think something else got him, I think he’s lying a lot though, so I’m not sure-

-What’s the Gouger?- He asks

What? Doesn’t he keep track of what’s happening in Dust Tow- no, he probably doesn’t you think ruefully, Hivers generally don’t, you didn’t after all.

-A monster- you say –Or maybe a madman, not sure, it’s killing people, I’m going to stop it-

-Are you crazy?- He responds, adding –I’ll help, please?-

-No- you respond –It’s dangerous, and I’ll be fine-

-Sure you will- he says –Because I’ll be there, if you let me help I’ll buy you something, please?-

You recall Ashley was never much of a fighter, but as a vamp he’ll be strong and tough, plus...owning guns isn’t illegal, the fae just tax them so high that only the rich can afford them. Ash could buy you a decent gun maybe.

This vampire doesn't kill, we already know that much.

But its dormant right now. We would actually be more vulnerable then we are right now.
We got our drugs to cover the rest of it.

At least thats how I understand it. I'm not sure what
>Being around vampires will remove the dormancy modifier after enough time has passed.
Is exactly supposed to mean. Do we have any level of Desire right now? Can we see that somewhere?
>>
>>36894458
I understood that to mean "if we spend more time around vampires, it will leave dormancy".
Seems like the only reading that makes sense.
>>
>>36894458
You have no level of desire right now, if dormancy ends, I'll tell you.

Dormancy will end when you get into a situation that seriously tempts you, or are fed on, or if you spend time in vampire company over days or weeks.

-No- you text back –You’re not coming, but I won’t say no to a gun-

-Oh?- You send back –Are we going steady now?-

-I mean a friend who is a, you know what I meant. Ok, fine I’ll get you a gun, what do you want?-

Well Laser guns are reliable, high number of shots and long range, but the damage isn’t the best

Plasma guns will kill just about anything but the range is so-so and the ammo count is low.

Cryo guns hit almost as hard as plasma and slow foes down, but their ammo is likewise poor.

Electron Guns are like lasers, except not as good. Their real advantage is against robots and cyborgs, then they’re better than anything else

Generally energy weapons are better than solid ammo, but might raise eyebrows in dust town, you suppose you could stand a solid slug gun, if you had to.

Slug-throwers are your basic solid-slug gun, good range, lowest damage, highest ammo capacity.

Shotguns (both long and pistol variants) can do the most damage, their range is shorter than regular slug-throwers though, and their ammo capacity is lower.

Needlers are often called an assassins weapon. The mass of sharp metal they fire makes a mess of flesh but can be stopped by even basic armour. Supposedly spacers use them on ships to avoid hull-breaches.

The real plus to solid-slug and shotguns, is that you can get modded ammo for them, such as plasma rounds, cryo rounds, tracker shot, explosive and a bunch of other goodies.

What gun do you ask for?
>Laser
>Plasma
>Cryo
>Electron
>Solid-slug
>Shotgun
>Needler

And of course, you are better with long guns than pistols, but a pistol would be more concealable.

PoJs was not any smaller and the only problem there was that we got too many new powers added into it over time.
If Pally does it right this time and we don't go on brutal powercreep and get some useful companions to also buy skills for, the pastebin is completly okay in size.

And I really wanted a reliable rifle, -2 might not be bad, but as a beginner weapon 2 does make a difference, and we got a mission in a few days were we could use the rifle.

>>36894875
Shotguns have bullets. I'm just not a fan of getting the straight-up weakest gun when we already have one, even with a -2 attached to it.

We could probably use Mechanics skill to remove that poor quality modifier in those few days.

>>36894935
Telepathy isn't that great. I'd rather get Psychometabolism to help remove our fragility somewhat. Or psychokinesis.
>>
>>36894981
we could also sell our old rifle for a pistol or shotgun pistol.

It’s late, and you need to rest, you can track down Kirian later. You head back to your tiny shack and sleep.

Next day work passes in a blur and before you know it, you’re sat in a cafe waiting for Ashley to arriv-ah, there he is! He looks a little out of place this low in the Hive but other than curious looks, he doesn’t cause much of a stir.

You wave and he spots you, taking a seat opposite and placing a bag under the table, as you both enjoy a drink you take a quick peek inside “What’d you get me?” you ask playfully, as you examine the gun without taking it out of the bag.

“Oh nothing much” he says, trying to play it down, but wait is that a Heamston quality stamp, damn only the best of the line, and a Evid Scope, and the extended mag? Ashley really does know you that well.

“It’s perfect” you tell him “Thank you”

“So” he says “Are you really hunting this *Gouger* and it looks like one of the Graced, really?”

You wave your hand back and forth “maybe” you say “My only source is a little unreliable.”

“Let me help you, please” says Ash, taking your hands in his. You feel a familiar thrill go through you or remembered pleasures.

“No” you say firmly, pulling your hands out of his “Ash I won’t risk you, please stop asking.”

He sighs “Fine” he says, “Will you at least tell the soft weak Hiver what you’re going to be doing, big tough Duster Girl?” He looks away from you.

Ouch, he sounds a little mad. But then, he did just buy you a very expensive weapon just like you asked, and he probably think you’re just being stubborn, rather than trying to protect him.

Plan?

“Track it or him” you say “To its lair, if its a monster I’ll shoot it, if its a person, then they’ll get a chance to surrender, if not...” you leave it hanging.

“Sounds like you have everything figured out” says Ash grumpily, oh Ash don’t be such a Hiver...

“Ash” you say “Ash” you repeat yourself, finally he looks at you “What?” he asks

You lower you voice; don’t want anyone overhearing this.

"It's not that you're weak Ashley, I'm the one that's weak." You say

“What do you mean?” he looks confused

"Each time you touch me” you explain “even just being with me, I get flashbacks. Temptations."

“Oh” he says, eyes widening in realisation “Oh...”

“Yeah” you respond, continuing "That and it wouldn't be good to associate with someone like me, you could be attacked by Dusters if they realize what you are....which means they'll attack me too. I don’t want to have to kill anyone defending myself or you, just because you want to help." You try your best to explain to him.

Ash gets a bleak look on his face “Yeah, ok, I guess I should stop being such a burden Shee, goodbye.” He grabs his coat and storms out, a few more curious looks from the other patrons follow.

Oh Dammit Ash, why can’t you just understand? Nevermind, you have other things to do.

You get on the bus in the dark and are out of the gate before curfew, as you walk to your shack a young boy comes running up to you.

“Miss, miss!” he says insistently “You was asking about the Gouger, right?”

“I was” you say, you’ve seen the boy around, but don’t know his name.

“It’s killed again!” he blurts out “They found the body a few minutes ago, I can show you.”

This is the perfect opportunity to track the beast, and you have your new gun, but do you do so alone, or gather your allies?

The more allies you gather, the longer it will take, and the thing might escape.

Blink teleport is probably the best power in Psychoportation for us right now. Apportation is alright, but it's fairly difficult to use, enemies get will rolls to resist, and it might still result in our brain melting if we Apport people too high. Of course, 500 meters of falling damage is probably enough to kill most non-flying enemies.

Anyway, we should probably get both of those powers after we take care of our Fellowship problem. Master bonuses are pretty great.

You can’t risk the Gouger getting away, you run after the kid without asking any of your allies for help, your new gun in its bag held in your arms.

The kid leads you through the streets to a small crowd of people gathered around what was once a shack, the remains of what was once a person on the floor in front of it, looks like they tried to flee. At least someone has had the decency to drape a sheet over them.

There’s a group of 8 people or so standing around, talking in hushed tones, some crying. No one is talking about going after the Gouger, they’re just mourning. Dust Town does that to you after a while.

One entire wall of the shack is torn apart and there’s blood everywhere, along with a short trail of it leading away from the scene.

You take a quick look around the crime scene, no time to question people, the Gouger is getting away.

You’re no crime scene investigator, but it seems pretty clear what happened here, most of the bits of the shack are outwards: Gouger broke out, not in, maybe he snuck in?

There’s blood in the shack remains, but not much, he hurt the victim there, some.

You switch your focus to the victim, your mind analysing the details even as you feel the urge to throw up rising within you, you force it down and focus on the matter at hand. There’re a few gasps as you lift the sheet to examine the body, but no one interferes.

Ok, victim flees the shack, scrapes on her back, bits of shack hitting her maybe? Just how strong is the Gouger.

Scuffed floor and a lot of blood, he hurt her more here. And finally a blood trail leading to the body, she crawled away before dying. She has...had blonde hair and looks about your age. This could have been you.

Odd though, the wounds, there’s something funny about the wounds, they are the horrible gouges it is famous for, but there’s something wrong, what?

You wrack your brain, trying to think, thinking of wounds you’ve seen, wounds you’ve taken. No that’s no help, Ash always licked your bites clean-that’s it!

All of the gouges on her body have been licked clean, there’s hardly and blood on the wounds, at least not on her back. You check under the body.

“What are you doing!” exclaims someone, you lower the body and step back. The wounds on her front, under the body have plenty of blood on them, but those on her back, as well as arms and legs that are easy to get to, no blood. Strange.
>>
>>36895774
>this shit again
No, its not vital. Fuck off.
>>
Now it’s time to follow the blood trail, no wait, trails...

One, the obvious one, leads off at ground level, the other leads to a shack wall, you pull yourself up and check on the roof, yes across the rooftops.

Two people (?) left the scene, one at ground level, one climbing on roofs, or flying. They are headed in different directions.

Which do you follow?

>Ground level trail
>Rooftop trail
>Do something else (what?)

>>
>>36895904
And yet we still got the basic lead we wanted, and a good idea of our targets.

>>
>>36895928
If you want to find a thing, of course you talk to someone who has encountered it. Thats common sense.
And we got a lot of info out of him even with our poor roll, so I fail to see how fellowship is so vital.
>>
>>36895906
Dex isn't even a stat, you mean Agility. Failing such a roll is actually less likely to screw us over than Fellowship, Willpower or Constitution. Fellowship could lock us out of useful info, shouldn't have to explain the other two.

I'm not saying we should be a diplomancer, that kind of thing tends to be annoying, but completely bricking our fellowship rolls out of spite for diplomancers seems a bit stupid.

>>36895936
We succeeded a roll before that, anon. That's where the info came from.

>>
>>36895981
We can't brick our fellowship rolls? The dice do that.

Pumping fellowship. Is the diplomancer route. We're playing a new character.. we don't always have to roll with diplomacy.
>>
>>36896006
We don't have to specialize in it to make ourselves competent in it.
>>
>>36895996
>This makes it vital.
No it doesn't. A stat is "vital" if you absolutely need it for the character to be able to not die, hence "vital". Situations in which we need to roll fellowship to survive are very rare by comparison to a lot of other stats.
We could have also gotten information by investigating and rolling Int if we wouldn't have gotten anything out of him. If you can substitute one stat with another, like we have just done, that stat is not vital.
>>
>>36896029
Agreed.
>>
>>36896012
But we have to invest precious early game XP into it that would be better used in making our character good in something that is actually necessary to not die.
Like psychic powers, or willpower, con, HP, shooting skills and so forth.
>>
>>36896029
>A stat is "vital" if you absolutely need it for the character to be able to not die, hence "vital".
So....fellowship is vital because otherwise we're eventually going to piss off every single ally we're ever going to have, make a million enemies and never be able to talk to people properly, forcing us to become a murderhobo which will eventually kill us due to the lack of supplies and such?

>>36896049
I'm not arguing we shouldn't prioritize here.

Guess we better start cranking out fanworks so we can build power faster.
>>
>>36896060
>So....fellowship is vital because otherwise we're eventually going to piss off every single ally we're ever going to have
By that logic of assuming "you don't invest in something that means you will auto-crit fail every encounter", its a whole lot less vital then investing into willpower to avoid being made into some fey/vampires/whatevers bitch or getting our brain fried.
Interacting with people does not always require a fellowship roll. In fact, most of the time it doesn't.
>>
>>36896006
I am aware of that, I just don't see any kind of logic in intentionally cutting ourselves off from any path that involves using diplomacy, deception or intimidation. It's not like it would be a large investment or anything.

>>36896029
>>36896049
Nobody said to do it immediately or have it take much XP. It's better to have a little bit of competency than none at all and we will eventually encounter situations where fellowship is either the best or only answer.
>>
You climb up on the rooftops, heading after the less obvious trail. Is there two killers? A killer and a scavenger? Was the ground trail a false one?

You run across tin and wooden roof, hearing shouts of annoyance, then the trail disappears abruptly.

Damn, were you too late, is the whatever it is gone?

You look around you, your gun clutched in your hands, your legs burning with the effort you’ve expended, as you gasp for breath, you’re feeling twitchy, you could really do with something to take the edge off, today has been pretty stressful, maybe a little Shine when you get back, just a pinch...wait, you’re not the only one up here.

About 20 metres away, perched on the edge of a roof is a very large...bird? Or is it a small child? You can’t see in this light, you try using your scope, wow have you ever missed the low-light function. Suddenly the figure swims into focus.

It’s a girl, 10, 11? She’s wearing rags, typical duster, except she has white feathered wings. Her back is to you and she seems unaware of your presence, crouched on the edge of a rooftop and watching something below.

Just because you can't wrap someone around your finger with words doesn't mean you can't speak properly.

We're not going to have a million enemies because we're not a masterful speaker. We're going to have enemies because we're the pc and we're going to get into some shit.

Because we have only so much XP which means we have to cut of SOME paths of competence.
And as of now, fellowship is one of the more expendable since less vital.

Considering our proficiency is shooting, we probably shouldn't go closer right now and startle it.

Just be aware guys. She could be a murderous little shit. So be ready to fight if necessary. Just because it's a kid doesn't mean we need to adopt it.
>>
>>36896181
She could also be a cute little Vampire kid too, that isn't a murderer and that we could adopt.
>>
>>36896181
A rifle can be a club if we need it too. Wished we stopped to pick up a knife though.

We.. could get our bite fix from her! No need to go int othe hive!
>>

i smell a vampire loli waifu
>>
>>36896215
I would like to think Shee wouldn't immediatly jump to that conclusion.
But since it might be the only alternative to the kid attacking random people in the streets, its a compelling argument.

She might mistake us for a Fae or one of their Gifted if we Teleport. That probably wouldn't be a good thing.

I don't want to immediately shoot a kid.

>>36896203
We're actually better with Unarmed than a improvised Rifle-Club. We have a proficiency in Unarmed Combat.

>>36896215
We don't need a fix yet, it's still dormant.

>>36896224
Nope, for a lot of reasons. Most of them outside of player control.
>>
>>36896135
Again, I don't want it immediately. I don't want the option immediately vetoed in the future when we do have some XP to spare and are out of the "die horribly" zone.
>>
>>36896253
True having unarmed means we stand a better shot with our own hands, we'll see how it goes i guess.
>>
>>36896277
Then I don't see your point, sure at some point we will do that. In some hypothetical future.
Hell, right now we could stand to at least get fellowship to 10 to get rid of the malus at least.
>>
>>36896235
>>36896253
Nah I'm not saying our fix Now. I'm saying we may have an adorable little girl who needs blood to survive and we happen to have blood.. and an addiction

We're not giving into urges! We're feeding a poor child!

Okay, I guess it was just a miscommunication. Glad we got that cleared up.

You focus your powers, you didn’t do all that training for nothing. You visualise where you are, and where you need to be. There’s no distance, none at all, all places are one, you don’t need to teleport, you’re already there.

With a gut-wrenching feeling everything blurs around you and you are standing on the edge of the roof next to the winged child “Woah” you say, and then turn to the kid, just as she jumps in fright at you suddenly appearing next to her.

“Easy, easy” you say, trying to look non-threatening with a rifle in your hands.

She hisses at you like a cat might and leaps off the roof into empty air, you feel like your heart leaps into your throat as you instinctively reach a hand out to grab her, and miss.

She spreads those beautiful feathered wings and climbs up and up into the sky, circling around like a gigantic bird of prey.

Is she trying to escape, or coming around to attack you? You’re not sure.

>>
>>36896425
>Yeah, but that's not currently a motivation.
No, I don't think anyone suggested it is.
I'm just saying that if the kids only way to sustenance is to attack random people in the streets or feed on the gougers kills, then Shee has an incentive for offering an alternative. Even if it would make her uncomfortable.
And it probably will and should.
>>
>>36896456
I like this idea but be prepped to teleport, can we teleport object that we can see but aren't touching? or would that require a mix with psychokinesis?

Obviously. If we have means to get blood bags or whatever from that medical transport we are about to raid, and they can use those, thats a option too.

I’m not here to hurt you” you call out to her “I just want to talk, dammit-”

You throw yourself to one side as she swoops down towards you, her hands grabbing at where you used to be, damn she’s fast. She growls in frustration.

You roll, coming up in a crouch, rifle at the ready out of habit, watching her fly up high again, circling over you, angling for another dive.

So far she hasn’t said anything, just made animal noises at you.
