Second Verse, Part 3

It is the Year of Our Lord, 1134.

You are Wilhelm, Lord of Ramla.

You have come to the city of Sidon to meet with Lord Gerard, and to cement an alliance with the Republic of Genoa. You have achieved the first, having met in secret with the Lady Lucca and her twin brother Lord Luke to gain their assistance. Now, having finished up your business in the Genoese quarter, you are returned to the streets of Sidon.

As ever the city is thriving with travelers and business. Outside Acre it is the busiest and richest port of the kingdom. It was said though it was only a Lordship of a single city, the Lordship of Sidon was possibly the most important title outside the throne itself. Certainly the wealth on display, the silk brought from the furthest Orient, the ivory brought up from Dark Ethiopia, and the amber and other goods brought down from the Slavic regions, was enough to fire the greed of any man.

It was a struggle despite your station to fight your way through the trading grounds, to make your way to the sea-fort that held Lord Gerard. When last you had been in this land you had been but a landless knight seeking your fortune. Now you had a lordship of your own, though it was a poor one, and a personal invitation to celebrate the Feast of St Paul and Peter with Sidon's nobility and clergy.

A good excuse to find allies for your coming war with the Saracen.

> head to the sea-fort and your waiting host
> tarry a little, visit a friend or the market
>>
Note: It will be a short one this week. Blame Christmas.

>>
>>36900669
Hmm. I think we can count his success towards the completion award, he was a PC for a while after all.
>>
With your squire by your side and your concubine in hand you fight your way through the mass of pilgrims, merchants and common folk of the city to return to the sea-fort. As ever it is a sight to behold, jutting out from the city itself, defended by the gaping, steel toothed mouth of its portcullis, a narrow band of entry to the high walls beyond.

Men armoured in the livery of Sidon and armed with spear and bow kept guard below and above, sitting idyll in conversation rather than watching the thronging mass as their duty dictated.

Indeed, your own waiting body of men kept better vigil. Though shields were at rest by knees and the more tired of them leaned upon the walls, they kept a tight company as they awaited you, overseen by Sir Etienne. Sabeen kept herself slightly separate from your body of men, chewing an apple as she watched your return.

"My lord," Etienne said. He looked quite regal, the long hem of his tabard switching in the wind coming off the ocean. The smell of the sea came with it, a strong belt that woke you from your drowsy afterglow of Adelheid's ministrations. You had left the woman a panting mess upon her bed linen, and truth be told you had struggled to walk afterward as well.

"Sir Etienne," you said, trying to mask your tiredness.

"Lord Gerard awaits," he said, motioning to the door.

You were not the only guest, of course. You knew at least of the Greek 'boy' who had been on the Roman ship, and as you checked your sword a pair of noblemen passed in the livery of Edessa. It seemed this event had attracted many kinds to it.

> ask Etienne if he has seen any other nobles enter

Good, very good

It would not help to Interrupt ''unwarranted''
>>
>>36900702

He was at Jerusalem, he must know some we may pass over, at least.
>>
>>36900702
> ask Etienne if he has seen any other nobles enter
>>
"Tell me who you have seen enter," you instructed, stretching your arm out. Adelheid had put you through your paces, and left you quite rung out, "I would know the field before I enter the fray."

Etienne nodded. "It is such that I have seen many nobles of Jerusalem in attendance, as well as some knights of Antioch. But more that is interesting, nobles from distant Occitan, Toulouse and Foix. Count Alfonso of Toulouse and his troubadour companion Marcabru in particular. A cousin to Duke William of Aquitaine, Sir Christopher of Gascony, has entered as well. The two of us have an...acquaintance." He rattled off some other names, all either known to you or unimportant.

Joyce the Crusader had taken up in the city to establish a house for his Order, and was in attendance of the feast looking to make a match for his young sister. And a man named LeBrand, known as a companion to Prince Elias and supporter of King Fulk, but of no real station, was also there.

"It should in all be an interesting event," Etienne said, "Talk is had of a melee to be held, and Marcabru is to perform his latest composition. Quite a coup for Lord Gerard. All this foreign activity in Jerusalem, no doubt as a result of certain upheavals at the royal court." He gave a sniff, correcting the collar of his tabard.

"Let us be in," you instructed, motioning for your men to arm up.

You marched in between your men, who formed a column either side of you. A disciplined display giving you the appearance of a hard campaigner. A good image considering the business you were set upon. The more they thought you a skilled warrior, the more likely they were to join your cause.

You came across the stone bridge, and were admitted into the grounds itself by the seneschal. He did not recognise you as anything but the new lord of Ramla, having been just another face back in your adventures here earlier, but you remembered him.
>>
If this is the ritzy city, perhaps we can find good trobadour here. Befriend him with music.
>>
>>36901088
"A fine afternoon," you said, pressing his palm.

"Indeed m'lord," he said with a touch of forelock.

The courtyard of the castle had been given over to the visitors. It was an explosion of colourful pageanhtry. Knights and ladies in their finest clothes, a riot of colour with competing heraldry and realm colours. Most in evidence was Lord Gerard's men, but you saw the colours of Galille and the household of the Royal Family as well.

Lord Gerard stood far from you at the very end of the courtyard, in company with a pair of men, one whip thin and carrying a harp, the other doughty and round, but round like a barrel, his fat cheeks smooth and eyes crinkled with laughter.

"Count Alphonso and Marcabru," Etienne said, pointing them out.

Most people around you were chattering in French, and when some ladies passed they sniff and looked with wide eyes and armoured Sabeen.

"I feel like a lord's monkey," she muttered, palm upon the pommel of her sword.

Sir Joyce of the Order of St John was the only face that reared out as immediately familiar, he stood with a pretty girl of about twelve or thirteen years. When he saw you however he scowled, and you felt a prickle upon the back of your hand.

You think its in your best interest to present yourself before Lord Gerard immediately, and make your way to do so. Shouldering through the crowd with a polite chuckle and nod of apology to those you jostled, soon enough you and your immediate circle of companions are standing before Lord Gerard.

He paid you no mind as he continued to speak with Count Alfonso.

You waited, he turned an eye to you but did not stop to greet you.

You waited, their chatter an alien bubble of nothing to you. When Alfonso turned his paunchy face upon you he did so with a respectful little nod.

And when they were done Lord Gerard gave you an irritated look, while the count left with a touch of his forelock, his troubadour accompanying him.

"Wilhelm," he said, not bothering with titles, "Must you be forever the centre of attention?" He gestured. "The Count of Foix was not offended, but it was most rude to interrupt our conversation like that."

"Forgive me Gerard, I only meant to pay my respects immediately upon my arrival," you said.

"Hnn, which is why you tarried to arrive in the first place. I was told your ship docked this morning, but you present yourself hours later with little explanation," the man seemed in a particularly prickly mood. He clicked his fingers and wine was brought to him. He did you the honour of pouring you a cup as well. Perhaps he was not completely sour.

"You see all these foreigners?" he said, motioning to the courtyard, "They have all come for their own reasons but they speak mostly on one subject, the dethronement of Fulk. It is an extreme irritant. The king of France is offended by our queen's actions, and they are all only too happy to tell me so." He spoke with the rumble of a coming storm, eyes dark beneath a drawn brow, those owl like eyes troubled.

"Perhaps we should give them something else to speak of," you said, your mind on Ascalon, but his words giving you some concern as well.
>>
>>36901355
Jesus always knows
>>
>>36901411
Gerard raised a thick corner of his brow.

You looked back to the mingling crowd of colourful nobility. How many would raise a sword to join your righteous cause? You could not say, many seemed more occupied by the game of conversation and gesture that was the intrigue of court than they were the hard steel of combat.

"A word for later," you said, "Needless to say, there are things afoot that would interest you."

Lord Gerard smiled. "A plot already, and with your first not fully played out. Should you note weigh the aftermath before engaging in more schemes?" he sighed, looking into his wine, "No, of course we should not sit idly. Come find me after the feast and we may talk." He emptied his cup and walked off, deep in thought, giving you the freedom of his castle.

You looked back to the crowd. More guests were arriving. You spotted Sir Matthias the Frog-Knight, and with him his wife Jehanne, belly swollen with child. You felt a nervous flutter at that.

Then your gut turned. He had another with him, a familiar scar-lipped face. Orlando. He looked haggard, his face covered in stubble and his clothes ill-fitting, eyes cast about like a paranoid. He stuck close to his old friend Sir Froggy.

You saw also the Greek 'boy' and 'his' English bodyguard, in conversation with a dark haired man in the colours of Maine. The man said something to cause the Greek to laugh, though you could not hear it you saw through that disguise as she threw her head back, and could not believe you had fallen for it earlier.

Sir Joyce kept glowering towards your party, ignoring for the moment his sister and a brother-companion of his order.

You stood alone in the far corner, no true friends at this court save the now departed Lord Gerard.

"Sir Joyce," you make your way over to the irritated Templar. You had met first on the road in combat, and he had praised you as deliverance from the Saracen. What had turned him so sour towards you? As you approached you noticed his glare shifted from you to your squire. And you noticed a blush alight on his sister's cheeks and on Hugo's as well.

Of course, the maidenhead.

You struggled to maintain your smile.

"Lord Ramla," the other Templar stepped forward and bowed. He was a younger man of mixed heritage, thick lipped and dark of skin. Some offspring of Frank and African. He spoke with the tone of the Iberian.

You returned the slight bow.

"Sir Rodrigo," Joyce said, cuffing his companion, and then bowing himself, "Lord Ramla." His sister Elaine curtsied and muttered her own greeting, eyes hot for your brother however.

Sir Rodrigo straightened, and eyes turned to Sabeen. To her he also bowed, taking her hand for a kiss. Sabeen kept a stoic look but you saw a darkening of her cheeks as well.

"You are a long way from home Sir Rodrigo," you said to the knight.

"I go where there are Moors to fight," he said, "And though my homeland does not lack for them, for now I am forced to be else where." He spread his arms and smiled, "And where else is there but Jerusalem?"

You all gave small applause. It was well spoken.

"And yet it seems we spend more time against each other than against the infidel," Joyce said, ignoring the infidels in your company.

"Ah, to have a Muslim in hand now," Rodrigo said, "I long to match your variety, and put them to the sword. You have so many that you just permit to scurry around the place. This would not happen in my homeland. We know how to keep such people in line."

>>
>>36902090
>Invading Jerusalem is a crime. Warring against the armies and kingdoms of Christendom is a crime. Living and breathing? Not a crime.

"I think to make an enemy of all Muslims would be to set yourself against half the world," you said, "Foolish at best, suicidal at worst. And some Saracens have their charms. It needn't be so that we should fight and just fight. There's much to learn as well."

Rodrigo frowned, the words tumbling about in his head. "I suppose you are not wrong. Those we do not kill can be made as useful slaves, as Romans did in days gone by. But I think you speak too highly of them. My homeland has been ravaged by their kind and we know them well, better than any. They are a treacherous species, not like us in the mind. You will learn this the more you have to do with them," he sighed, "Though it is the mark of a good Christian to extend such warmth to an enemy. I salute that, if not your misguided judgement."

Now you did not think yourself misguided, and you saw a flash of anger upon Sabeen's face, but you also felt that were this conversation to continue it would lead to a quarrel, the opposite of your intended task.

"Well I should say that I am not a mindless friend of infidels," you said, "Since coming here already I have crossed swords with them, and mean to continue to do so. But enough on this for now, let us speak on other things."

"Such as sisters and marriage," Joyce said with a nod, "You might have heard I'm looking to make a match for my sister Elaine. Is she not a sweet thing?" he motioned to her. She did have some charm to her, a clean face and slim figure. "You are unmarried, are you not Lord Ramla?"

"You are correct sir, I remain for now a bachelor," you said, gut turning at what you knew was about to come.

"Well," and for the first time Joyce smiled, "It is such that you should know my sister has quite the dowager. We have possessions in Aquitaine, and with me in holy vows her husband is like to inherit them upon our father's passing. And she is quite young but already beautiful, and likely to become more beautiful with time. Would it not be pleasing to watch a rose bloom in full?" he held up one of his sister's tresses as he spoke, almost as if she were a horse on display.

But that was common, you supposed. One day you would have to do the same with your father, marrying off your sisters, or for any daughters you might have.

But though Elaine certainly had her charm, your heart was set on another, more beautiful young woman. The honey skinned, dark-golden princess of Jerusalem. You thought to mention, or at least allude to her, but then stilled your tongue. It was still no certain thing and might annoy the Queen should a murmur of it reach her.

"My brother is a fine young man," you said, giving Hugo a pat, "Would it not do for two young such people to grow together? As of now he is my sole heir, and the lands of Jerusalem are treacherous."

Hugo spluttered up at you, eyes wide and blushing. Elaine looked on your brother with eyes wide with delight.

But Joyce frowned. "Ill born is ill fortuned," he said, "But if you vouch for the boy, perhaps a betrothal can be arranged." Elaine turned bright red, her smile growing, but you noticed a drop in Hugo's expression. It troubled you to see him look so troubled. It was a good match, and she was a fine looking girl. It is not as if he could not sample other such delights on the side if he so chose. It certainly had not stopped you.
>>
>>36902766
It was perhaps time to start thinking of such things, the marriage of your brother and sisters to likely allies. Lands in Aquitaine were nothing to scoff at, no matter how small, and you could use more friends beyond the circle of the Queen.

"We should all meet after the tourney, the day after next, and discuss it," Rodrigo said, "Speaking of events coming though, would it be such that I could have your company at tomorrow's feast, my lady?" Rodrigo spoke to Sabeen, and you saw her cheek twitch.

"Sabeen?" you looked to her with brow raised, offering no council but suggesting she answer the man. It was such that as her liege you could order her attendance, or have it dismissed, but you were not the sort to dictate the lives of your subjects to such a degree.

She looked to you then to Sir Rodrigo, a hand briefly to her lips. "Your offer is very generous sir," she said, "But I'm no fair maid to take to court."

"You are the finest maid I've yet laid eyes upon in this land," Rodrigo countered, taking her hand in his.

She looked like she might sound a retreat. "Well," she said, "Well, I suppose I cannot refuse. Very well, I shall accompany you tomorrow night." She with drew her hand from his. He bowed and she dipped a slight curtsy. "Until then."

"Until then," he said with a grin, drawing away, "And until then, we have other business Sir Joyce." The Templars took their leave. Elaine gave Hugo a small wave as she departed. Your brother merely looked sick.

"Would that we be done with this courtly nonsense and be back in the saddle, eh?" he said, looking over to Sabeen.

"I don't know..." she said, fingers upon her chin, "I think these might be quite enjoyable."

You make your way over to Sir Matthias and his heavily pregnant wife. As you approached you saw Jehanne grow even paler than she naturally was. Orlando skulked a step behind them, eyes dark and glitter on you.

The three looked upon your approach with some awkwardness. Jehanne bit her lip. Sir Froggy's eyes bulged. Orlando turned his eyes away.

"L-Lord Ramla!" Sir Froggy said, with a bow, "It is good to meet you again, and we are honoured that you have remembered us. You know well my wife."

"Lord Ramla," she said, eyes down cast and blushing. She had a glow about her, and a fullness to her figure that reminded you of your brief affair, and you felt a stir in your loins despite the swollen belly. Even with child she had a loveliness about her.

"Jehanne," you said with less formality, "It seems this scoundrel has done well for himself after all." That drew a curling smile to her lips.

"Indeed," she replied, and she stepped forward to brush a hair from your shoulder, "Very well."

"And you are pregnant," you said, and put a hand to her belly. You felt a small motion. A kick. "It seems healthy, is it due soon?"

"Yes, very soon," she replied, "The luck of a strong father. We think it may be a boy." And her smile told you something about that even though it was Sir Froggy that beamed.

"Should you be walking about so close to birth?" you asked, sudden concern for the child within her. She simply took up your hand in both of hers, gave it a slight squeeze and returned it to your sword hilt.

"I will be happy either way," Sir Froggy said, oblivious to her tender gestures, "Perhaps you should come around after the tourney. We can discuss trade. My father has passed and I have come into his possessions, including a part of a horse trading ring. Ramla is well set for caravans. Perhaps we can make this a mutual benefit."

This was not a bad suggestion, you thought. Your coffers weren't exactly bulging, and there was always a need for horse flesh, particularly so close to the frontier. If it was not to Jerusalem, perhaps south. There was potential there.

"I may take you up on that," you said, thoughts of coin and horses dancing through your head.

Chihirizahd stepped up next, a wide smile for Jehanne's bulging belly. She nervously asked permission to touch, which Jehanne granted with some hesitation. The concubine's eyes grew as she pressed an ear to that belly.

Sabeen watched, a troubled look on her face.

"Wil..." you heard Orlando speak your name through a miserable, scratched throat. He had remained silent in the rear, but now he dared glance up at you.

Both Jehanne and Matthias looked to Orlando and back to you uncertainly, an air of trepidation upon them.

"Orlando," you offered to recognise him, but that was all. None the less it brought a light to his eyes.

You looked upon his miserable figure and felt nothing but pity. It looked as if he had given himself to drink and the company of the meanest folk. Even dressed up he looked vaguely dirty and worn down. He had no sword at his belt or spurs on his boots. The man no longer seemed a knight. If he should have ever been judged as one to begin with.

You turned your attention back to Sir Matthias and the talk of horse trading.

Hugo said something, a jest, and Sabeen laughed.

You saw him come across the floor. A Syrian servant carrying a dish. He seemed familiar, but you could not place him. Where had you seen this face before? It took your attention away from the company you were keeping. He was walking to you, the dish carrying goblets of wine. Perhaps for your party?

But something about his eyes.

He had such rage in his eyes.

You thought to call as he dropped the plate, revealing a dagger held in the hand beneath it, a slim blade that came thrusting toward your face. You bobbed your head back, avoiding the piercing knife.

Orlando launched himself forward, grabbing that stretched forth arm, twisting it back against itself, knife falling from hand.

But the Syrian caught the falling blade in the other, and sliced upward, cutting a red ribbon across Orlando's chest, opening his tabard and doublet both, kicking the man in the leg and wringing himself free from his hold. Orlando dropped with a hideous moan.

He spat something at you in that Oriental tongue, moved forward again with knife out to kill you.

Sabeen grabbed him 'round the neck as Hugo crashed into his torso. The both of them had him, wrestled him to the ground and prying the knife from his hands. He struggled against them, earning Sabeen's fist in his throat and Hugo's knees in his balls, bringing him for now to heel.

"God damn you," he snarled in broken Greek, limp in their bonds, "God damn all Franks, but most you."

And then you knew him. One of two bandits that had taken you upon the road, the survivor of the pair.

"Lord of the Mountains damns you!" he spat that and grinned, rearing against his captors in vain.

The gathered nobility were flocking around you, guards coming up to wrestle your prisoner away from your companions.

You ignored the fanatic and instead call for a physician.

"Hold strong Orlando, help is on its way," you said, cradling the fallen man's head. He had saved your life at risk of his own.

"Brother," he croaked the word, "I am sorry. Sorry for all the things I have done. It was only my wish to help you. And now it has come to this." He looked down at his own wound and his cheeks drew in, a spectre of death. "A payment for my sins."

"You will be well Orlando," you said, "Where is the damn surgeon!?"

Etienne comes forth, followed closely by Mohmed.

The young Arab pushes into the circle forming around Orlando. Orlando's chest was dyed red, seeping deep into the cloth. The knife had a keen edge to cut so neatly and so deep. When Mohmed knelt beside the man, fingering back the layers of cloth, he gave a whistle.

"A clean cut, the bleeding is only surface blood. It looks worse than it is," he said, patting Orlando on the cheek.

Orlando's grave expression lifted, his cheeks flooding with colour. He gaped up at you a little.

"B-but I cannot stand," he said.

Mohmed touched the calf of his right leg. "The kick has dislocated your knee. Hold still." Mohmed took the leg in hand and *pop*

Orlando gave a high peeling scream.

Mohmed dusted off his hands with a smile. "All well, have someone escort you over to a chair and get those bloody rags off. A bit of stitching should do the trick," the young man seemed quite pleased with it all.

You shoulder Orlando to his feet, and help him limp over to a vacated bench. Other folks were coming to aid him, young women mostly. With the help of a fulsome woman of gentle birth you peel the bloody rags from his frame.

Orlando had truly lost much weight in his time outside your company. Given to drink and other vices. He looked up at you with sad rimmed eyes.

"Again I must apologize," he said, "Even in a moment of valour my nature betrays me. What a miserable creature I am." He looked like he might sob.

You shake your head and squeeze his shoulder. "Be hearty Orlando, you saved my life. All is washed away before that."

It brought some cheer to his face as Mohmed came up, accompanied by Jacques the squire. They helped you lay Orlando out on the bench, and taking up needle and thread, Mohemed closed the cut across Orlando's chest. The man was much complaining of it, hissing at every dip of the needle and yowling at the pinch of pulling thread. When it was done he looked like he might be sick.

"Keep the wound clean," the Arab surgeon said, laying on a salve, "This will keep off infection. But do not go to public baths. Use private water only, fresh every day."

Orlando nodded as Jacques offered him a wine skin, squeezing out a mouthful.

You look at your former companion, still heavy with pity for the figure, but with some of that old affection returned. He had betrayed you, but as he had spoken he thought it had been to help you. Could you trust this man?

If you like I could find a place for you in my household, on my lands in Ramla. The choice is yours. If you refuse, I bid you go in god's grace and with all good fortune."

The both of you sat in silence for some time.

"Well, how can I refuse?" he said with a dry chuckle, "In Sidon I'm just a landless drunk weighing on the good nature of an old friend. In Ramla, working to a purpose? I would be honoured to serve you again."

You nod, and give the man a grin. "Welcome back into the fold, brother," you said.

Orlando returned your smile, face still pale and haggard but a note of joy now in his eyes. "My thanks, brother."

You are Hugo of Ramla, and you have just watched your brother nearly take a knife through the eye. Slow on your feet in his defense, you none the less pull the would-be-murder to the earth with the help of Sabeen, pummeling him with your fists and knees, choking on your own rage and fear.

The man did not struggle long as you brought a last knee up into his crotch, doubling him over and making it easier to slam him into the hard stone ground.

The Muslim groaned as Lord Gerard's man took him in hand.

The assembled nobles make some muttering about that as you search for something to drink. Sabeen offers you some of her water. It goes down well, a cold slice along your throat.

"How did that man get so close?" she murmured, watching the guards drag him away.

They had both been distracted. You could not say what had occupied Sabeen, but you knew where your attentions had gone. And you were ashamed. Your brother had near been killed.

"All is well," Etienne said, "Do not be hard on yourselves."

"Who said I was?" you shot at the knight, and his raised brow made you straighten in fear. Such a disrespectful tone. "Sorry, sir," you said, bowing your head. You'd had such a rage building in you, a troubling knot, and you couldn't say why. You watched your brother speak with Sir Orlando, and then looked back over to your other companions.

You felt pressed in and hot under the collar. You had not been lying. You would prefer to be else where, on a horse and alone. These assembled nobles and their parties, packed together and building a heat that made the mind swim, was too much for you. You felt on the verge of some outburst. And you did not want to embarrass your brother or yourself.

You decide to clamp down on your anger and remain at the court. But know you have an itch in your eye, continually looking at every passing person with suspicion, unable to shake the feeling of threat in the air. One killer had struck, more may be in the offing.

A plate was brought by a servant, laden with fruit and it was offered to you, but you let it pass.

Though your stomach grumbled you wouldn't be lax again.

Sabeen came and tried to draw you briefly into conversation but you studiously ignored her. She had taken up so much of your attention, and it was always for nothing or had some grave consequence. And all her attention seemed to be on other men. You had seen hr seek out your brother in the thunder storm. You had seen her blush under Sir Rodrigo's attention. What was the point of looking on after such a woman? When she left she did so with a troubled expression of her own.

Never mind her. She was just a woman.

You told yourself as you felt that ball tighten up again.

It was painful walking through these crowd and only understand half a word here or there. Most of these people were French, and chattered in that tongue.

You say the men lay over the women, giving compliments while trying to mask their lust. You saw the women react, withdrawing as if demure while masking their own.

What you would give for a screaming Turk and spear in hand. All this dropped away when the blood was up and the fight was at hand.

You stalked over to keep vigil by your brother. He spoke with Orlando, exchanging jests. It was always remarkable to you how easy your brother had it, making and winning friends.

"Hey, you," a voice called.

A trio of girls, around your own age, thick with Occitan accent. They wore those vieled smiles you had grown familiar with.

"Hey, you!" a male voice called. Sir Joyce, and he did not look happy.

"Excuse me, Hugo?" Sabeen stood by the shadow of a pillar.

You stood to Sir Joyce as he approached. The man had his jaw set forward with a mean grin upon it. When he came to stand before you, that is to say over you, his brow was lowered.

"So your brother thinks you a match," he said, "And well it might be,after you robbed my sister of her maidenhead, and made her endure this farce." His finger found your ribs, and he was happy to grind it into you. "I know it was you. She was bound for an English lord until he caught wind of it. Now I find myself peddling for the hand of a bastard born."

You glared up at him, a hard smile of your own building upon your face. That knot of anger was clinching tighter.

"I hope you are not a coward on the field as you are in the bed chamber, skulking out after robbing a pure maiden of her virtue. From what I've seen of your character, I very much think you are."

"A coward?" you asked, stepping forward slightly, voice tight.

"Yes, a coward," he took half a step forward as well, "And I'll not have my sister marry a coward. A coward and a bastard both."

You choked back on your anger.

"Hugo," you heard someone say, but their voice was fuzzy in your ears, stopped up as they were with anger.

"Believe what you want," you said, "But know that I've fought Turk and Saracen, that I've stood before a king with a dangerous name and declared myself, and that I've crossed swords with false knights and won. Call me coward all you like, it's the deed that counts not the word."

If you spoke more you would not be able to contain yourself, that rage that you felt in the back of your throat like a bitter poison, threatening to spill out. You simply looked up at Sir Joyce, waiting for him to make a move.

He gave you a troubled look, but as he withdrew that finger he flicked at your face.

"You are a coward," he said, "As you said, deeds prove it, not words. You skulked from my sister's chamber like a dog. I say you are a dog. And time will prove it."

But he no longer fought the point. He withdrew. Leaving you be. It was only then you noted the quiver in your limbs.

No one had much paid you mind, though those girls looked over you curiously.

You saw Sabeen standing still by that pillar, eyes large with concern.

Your head was so clouded you felt you could barely see straight.

You staggered away from the pageantry of the crowd, feeling sick, staggered over toward the stables.

Night had come and torches had been set, but you stuck to the shadows, not wanting to see anyone, not wanting to be seen.

It was when the sound of the party was lost entire you heard steps behind you.

"Who follows!?" you barked, reaching for your sword in fear of Sir Joyce.

You turned prepared to draw and see Sabeen. She stood half in shadow, near vanished, her black skin lit only by a nearby torch. She had a hand half raised to you, as if you were a startled horse.

"Are you well?" she asked, stepping forward. You took a step back.

"What business is that of yours?" you asked through a raw throat.

"Are we not friends?" she asked, "A comrade asks with concern for a comrade."

Comrade and friends. The words were unwelcome. They gnawed at your ears, buried deep into your mind and down into your gut. You did not want to be her damned friend!

"We are not friends," you snarled the words and saw Sabeen flinch. "You are a Saracen, I am a Christian. It's only for money that we are on the same side. Come next season you'll as likely be back under the banner of the Moslem. You are an infidel and a mercenary. What do either of those know about friendship!"

She recoiled fully as if struck hard upon the cheek. "You are hurt, and angry. An angry boy who needs a friend," she said, again, stepping forward.

You drew your sword.
>>
>>36907808
"I. AM. NOT. A .BOY!" You bawled the words, eyes hot and head swimming. No longer able to hold that ball together as it came apart within you.

You held the sword forward, "Fifteen. So far, fifteen. I heard Sir Matthew died of his wounds. All of them by my own hand. And a girl I made a woman," you spoke through your teeth, "What more do I have to do. How many more must I kill? Should I bed every woman this side of Christendom like my brother? What must I do to show you I am a man!"

Your body shook, muscles twitching, sword point low and eyes upon the ground. You could not even look at her. Maybe you were a coward, as Sir Joyce had said, for you felt no courage within you.

"God save me from this Saracen woman or I think I might go mad," you said. And then you dared to raise your head.

She stood very still with eyes very wide, an ebony statue, the aspect of the warrior struck out of her. You could not speak another word for fear of what might come out, and for all the wracks upon your body your feet felt planted into the ground.

The only motion was the wind off the sea.

This is it. Stand fast Hugo. For tonight you shall be tested upon the steps to manhood and glorious /ss/
>>
You stand. You watch her. You wait.

She is poleaxed and gaping.

"Hugo," she said your name and she said it soft that you felt a hot flash run through you.

But she did not step forward, and she did not say another word. She turned on her heel and ran fast, fast as you'd ever seen a person run. A panicked flight, her boots echoing down the way. And all she left behind was a sound on the wind, a choked something, a feeling that couldn't find a word. And your sword dropped from your fingers, hard clatter of steel on stone as you folded onto your knees.

"God," you said, chest rolling as tears sprung from your eyes. Then you looked up to the heavens. "God, if I could take that back. If you could take it please, please!" Take back your angry words, your foolish confession. Take from you your anger and lust, your affection for the strange infidel woman. You prayed on it but felt nothing change within you. No great hand turning back the hour so you might have said something smoother or not said anything at all.

You stayed upon your knees in half-prayer, sword fallen before you, alone and hollow. Eyes upon your sword. The glint of torch light along steel. You gave a heave as your tears dried.

"What are you whimperin' about?" a harsh French voice asked. You looked behind your shoulder. Brown Jacques came slinking out of the dark from near the stables, rubbing sleep from his eyes. His tunic half open.

Jacques, low born and mean mouth. Never smiling cast off of a Parisian whore.

"You wouldn't understand," you said.

He cleaned the wax from his ears. "Something about a Saracen woman?" he ventured, coming to stand next to you, flicking the wax away. "This is why I don't bother with women. They got nothing for me." He put hands on hips as he frowned down on it.

He had a wine skin and had been drinking.

He offered it to you. "You need to stop thinking so damn much and start drinking. World makes a lot more sense through three cups of wine."

You push the offered wine skin away. "I don't need that swill," you said.

Jacques' brows arched. "Eh?" he grunted, "You think you're better than me?" he kicked in your direction. "You're just a half-noble arse. You're no better than me just 'cause it was a knight put his prick in your ma instead of a tinker."

"Don't talk about my mother," you snapped, climbing from your knees to your feet.

You squared off with the boy.

Jacques raised his fists. You had a head on him but he looked fearless. "Your ma was a whore, just like mine. Just like e'ry woman god put on this earth. Jus' like that Saracen girl."

That did it.

Jacques knuckles took you in the chin before your fist could finish its arc. The smaller boy ducked out of your next blow and put one on your cheek, sending you stumbling back.

You came back and hit him hard in the gut, knocking the wind out of him.

But when Jacques straightened he just laughed

"Je me'n fou," Jacques said. And threw himself back at you.

The two of you brawled in the dirt, belting and beating each other, until you were both left panting and bloody, leaning against the sea facing wall. Jacques grinned at you through bloody teeth, and you grinned back, eye swelling.

"Not bad German," he said, but when he tried to walk he groaned, clutching his ribs.

You grabbed him, feeling tender in your shoulder as you supported his weight.

"Let's find that Saracen doctor, eh?" he suggested with a merry twink in his eye.

"Yeah," you said, wiping the blood from your split lip.

The two of you stumbled together down the way, laughing like idiots.

>>36909104
Don't mind it too much, although I'd rather keep it in the family if you know what I mean
>>
>>36909104

I'm fine with it but not all the time and only our central characters.

I for one would be interested in playing out Orlando's return.

Btw, was orlando stripped of his knighthood? If it was, can we get it back for him?
>>
>>36909106
Often.

>>36909109
Joyce is a seasoned and tough fighter, with weight and size on Hugo.

I'll note it now, but until Hugo turns sixteen, his strength is capped at 80.
>>
>>36909133
Cant wait for us to play Wilhelm's bastard in Jehanne's belly!

>you are laying inside your mothers belly waiting to be born
>do kick
>dont do a kick

>>36909104
Im fine with it. So long we dont do too much jump cuts
>>
>>36909129
>>36909133
This.

Just Wilhelm and Hugo.
Ioveta too, since she's part of the family
>>
>>36909161
>but until Hugo turns sixteen, his strength is capped at 80

goddamit goodbye Child prodigy hype train.
>>
>>36909161
How did we handle the court stuff with Wilhelm

Also

How does Hugo's WAR compare to other squires at his age. Is he a complete monster?
>>
>>36909153
No, he wasn't stripped of his knighthood. He sold his sword and spurs for alcohol.

You guys should watch Outcast and bask in how awful it is:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OnRuRFbpnCM
>>
>>36909161
>Joyce is a seasoned and tough fighter, with weight and size on Hugo.
Didn't the English dude we fought in front of the King have that too?
>>
>>36909196
But he was not very big if i remember correctly. So while we had a disadvantage it wasnt as bad as it would be with Joyce
>>
>>36909194
>No, he wasn't stripped of his knighthood. He sold his sword and spurs for alcohol.

.....GOD DAMMIT ORLANDO.

We're putting you to work your ass off after this.

And getting you off the drink.

Gotta cut that beer belly down.

I have a feeling this would be a bareknuckle affair so no armor or weapons to even the field.
>>
>>36909187
>>36909182

Hugo is essentially a child prodigy. It's a limit of human biology, not skill.

>>36909196
Matthew wasn't untalented, but not exactly a Templar. Templars who actually fought were often the best fighters in the kingdom of Jerusalem.
>>
>>36909194
It's like someone out there know how much I love shitty movies.
>>
>>36909238
wait so if we were to vs totally not squire aged mountain we'd have a fair chance?

>>
>>36909238
Do you ever re-read your old threads and beat yourself up over how shit you were back then?
>>
>>36909182

well it also does mean we know when to start working on some other stuff.

>>36909238

Considering that it might be some time till Hugo turns 18, for fights and war experiences after we hit the cap, could some of it go into a limited pool that will top up Hugo's war after he comes fully of age? Like he finally has the full ability to use his hard accumulated combat experience he'll be gathering?
>>
>>36909286
If there is a melee at the tourny tomorrow we can maybe train some Lead and/or CHA
>>
>>36909283
>Old Crusader quest threads
>Shit

It's like you don't love the shit out of lewd
>>
>>36909268
I've seen it already. It is gloriously shit. Hayden Christensen can't keep an accent to save his life.

Fight scenes weren't bad though. It was nice to see medieval Europeans as talented warriors for a change.
>>
>>36909283
Yes. But I feel that way about everything I do.

>>36909286
> Considering that it might be some time till Hugo turns 18
16 but yes, I get your point, and yes that sounds acceptable to me.
>>
>>36909307
Absurdly short updates, mediocre writing, etc.

He's gotten x20 better as the threads move on, it's really noticeable.
>>
>>36909332
HF, you're a gentleman and a scholar.
>>
>>36909345
To be fair. This is his first quest ever
>>

Is that a top knot, Cage?
>>
>>36909388
He also walks around with snakes wrapped around his wrists in one scene for -no discernible reason-
>>

This movie i need to see.

Brown hair, brown eyes.

But I'll need to go back and check his intro.

Leon.

Judging from the name my guess would be either Castille or Leon
>>

>>
>>36909696
Hypothetically could Hugo/Wilhelm join the reconquista?
>>
>>36909696
Ok...

So baby hair and eyes won't instantly be our death sentence for being suddenly blonde or something.
>>
>>36909719
Hypothetically. Some hold that the Crusades in the Middle East are part and parcel of the Reconquista as a movement.
>>
>>36909760
well I meant more like your're willingness to engage in such a venture.
>>
>>36909332
>>36909286

Excellent. Cap war at 80, pool the rest of experience to sudden rapid increase after puberty.
Focus on raising int and cha after hitting cap - Hugo seems to bottle it every social interaction
>>
>>36909801
Not really. It's literally the other side of the known world. I don't see what you'd gain from going to Spain at this point.
>>
>>36909827
But Anon. We will be in the neighbourhood when we forge our North African Empire. From Ascalon to Marrekesh
>>
>>36909815

I say we should do lead and cha.

Let Hugo be a warrior who leads from the front while his brother directs war strategy.
>>
I get the feeling that Chirhi and Sabeen has managed to put 2 and 2 together about Jehanne's baby
>>
>>36909936

I don't think so actually

Sabeen looks be to wondering if thats what she wants in her future. To be a wife and mother of children.
>>
>>36908923
>That fight on the boat earlier was Hugo fighting himself
>Wilhelm is an unreliable narrator
>Hugo, Jacques, and Wilhelm are all the same person
>>

Chiri maybe because Slave shit be crazy Sabeen has trouble putting 2 & 2 about Hugo together
>>

And technically, you can include Charizard as an MC as well. She and Wilhelm are bound together, and free together.
