Fires spread and alarms echo through the facility as your remaining workers move through the air ducts of the Union research facility. Your flies patrol the area, scouting the halls for your workers and observing the panic of the humans as they run about the halls blindly.

“What’s happening?” A technician asks a nearby guard. Your fly watches from the shadows.

“There’s been a breach, everyone needs to get to the hangar, we’re evacuating the base. Leave your stuff, there’s no time!” He shouts.

Your worker examines the small device taken from the humans. It looks old and worn, but seems similar to current human tech. You wonder what data on this could be so important that Seiner would be left behind to try to save it.

>Algae Farm – +100N per day, 1 worker to maintain
>Hangar Expansion – Add on to current hangar facilities for your choice of +40 aero/fighter drone space, or +20 shuttle space. 50N 100M
>Anti-orbital battery – A bunker armed with a massive Particle beam capable of attacking ships in orbit from the ground. It includes the power and sensor systems required to operate it. 250N 1500M
>Docking Pylon – A large spire or station that contains space for docking and construction of 4 ships, or a single capital ship if placed in orbit. 100N 300M
>Surface to Orbit Missile System – This massive bunker complex houses a wide range of warheads and a nigh limitless number of missiles within its protective walls, allowing you to launch missiles against approaching invaders from the safety of your hive. The facility uses the ship missile stats and comes equipped with a single Cruise missile silo that can target any detected object within the system, five Stinger missile silos capable of targeting any craft within high orbit, and ten Swarm missile silos specialized in targeting high altitude aircraft and low orbiting targets. The facility itself is a massive complex spread out over several miles, and includes guidance and launch equipment, as well as the means to construct and maintain a stock of warheads and missiles. Finished research

>Acid spray
This alternate version to the fire and plasma spray spews a stream of caustic molecular acid over its foes, causing horrific chemical burns and melting through armor. Decreases the effectiveness of a target's armor and causes chemical damage over time, but otherwise holds the same statistics as the fire and plasma spray.

>Broken Crystal
Upon inspection of this strange crystal your initial assumptions were that it was a kind of spent ammunition, a waste byproduct of the Psionic Cannon, and you were correct, mostly. It appears to be the corpse of a Void Shard, and while it is indeed junk in a way, its strange aura of absence and unsettling silence could yet hold a use.

New research unlocked

>Psionic Shroud
Slow
Your thinkers have been working over the strange and unsettling silence of the broken crystals you have collected and several of your quantum thinkers have theorized of using them to develop a kind of mute effect. In theory it could offer a way to muffle the mental sounds of your hive's thoughts from other hives.

Am I the only one that feels kinda bad that we went "Aliens" over everyone?

I mean, it was fun as hell. And I fully supported it when it happened. But I have this odd soft-spot for humans. I want to have them "Adopted" into the hive, or something.

I just hope this doesn't come out and end up screwing us in the long run.

Your flies move out in all directions in search of a functioning computer. The facility contains numerous power stations and multiple redundancies on several levels, so while your drones had disrupted the main power grid, there appears to be sparse and inconsistent power supplied to some of the offices and labs, however most of the computer systems important enough to be powered by backups also appear to be under security lock.

Your flies find a small data terminal in one of the offices. It is under a security lock, but you seem to recognize the clearance request. You recall the numbers Seiner had entered on the console in the lab to access the security system, and your flies hop up and down on the keys. The terminal lights up in response as your workers enter the office.

Before your drones plug in the data storage device you make note of an alert scrolling across the console.

[CODE BLACK: XENOLOGICAL CONTAINMENT LEAK. ALL PERSONNEL REPORT TO SURFACE FOR EVACUATION AND QUARANTINE. AN ORBITAL STRIKE HAS BEEN ORDERED ON THIS FACILITY DUE TO UNKNOWN CONTAMINATION THREAT OF SPECIMENS, PLEASE REMAIN CALM AND REPORT TO THE HANGAR IN A TIMELY MANNER. LEAVE ALL PERSONAL EFFECTS.]

Your worker plugs in the small device and the computer beeps in response. A small file opens on the screen with a number of folders within. Most are standard holo-video recordings labeled by date and time, the last is an audio file.

Either 1) you get a fresh head with no memories, which is useless. 2) you can copy the memories from the existing head into the fresh one, in which case you don't NEED the fresh one, 3) you can revive the existing head in the regen tank so it's fresh again. Use some logic anon.

Your orbiting pod pivots and finds an approaching human frigate, the USV Sulaco. Several shuttles drift down to the planet below. Your thinkers quickly calculate its course. You have less than an hour before it is in position to fire.

Meanwhile your flies have found several routes to the surface. The most direct would be through the hangar bay, although it will likely be guarded. The less direct but likely safer route would be several emergency ventilation ducts connected to the apartment block level.

look at
> however such memories can be implanted. If the original is readily available the experiences, memories, and skillsets can be copied to the clone prior to its completion. Such clones will believe themselves to be the original and if confronted with their falsehood they will deny it vehemently. False memories or isolated experiences, knowledge, or training can be given to a clone in the same way, and can be used to ensure the clone is well skilled in a desired field. Such memories can be from multiple other subjects, or simply be fabricated by the thinker overseeing the project.

>>
>>36902518
Yes, i know, but you say it like its gonna be impossible for us.
>>
>>36902518
But that line isn't talking about hive drones, it's clearly talking about memories implanted into and taken from aliens, anon. Our drones don't even HAVE long term memories if they're not thinkers or have quantum brains.
>>
>>36902572
Its all dependable on head freshness. Do we have a health pod in space? because if we really want the memorys we need to cut down the timer since death to a minimum. Get one on a ship into orbit and meet up, transfer the head asap if we manage to get out of this.
>>
>>36902564
could be worth a try, might work if we claim that he has important data
>>
>>36902616

>>
>>36902638
Ice crystals will form in the cells and destroy the soft tissue, along with the memory's.
>>
>>36902638
Would the radiation and cold not wreck it? Never mind getting dragged behind a spaceship.
>>
>>36902616
We blink in a replacement pod to the system to switch places with the existing pod carrying the data stick and Seiner's brain. Get it into the hive quickly that way. Just have to move into an position where the blink flash's visibility is blocked.
>>
>>36902655
>>36902677
Not too long, but long enough to slow the decaying processes than, plus our ships are pretty speedy.
>>
>>36902696
Its not like you can hang someones head out a spaceship just a little bit dude. they just aren't meant for that. Never mind that moving into a safe position to jump away from could take as long as a day. Maybe even more.

This turned from space bug madness to severed head preservation weirdly fast.

Your worker moves to extract the device from the computer when a thinker stops it.
"No no, thing bad. Use like this."
The worker selects through several menus on the computer as the alarms echo through the halls. It selects an option and the computer clicks as a small dialog box opens and the light on the data stick goes out. It promptly rips the stick from its port and rushes down the hall. Your workers split up, one heading back to the body of Seiner while the others rush to the vents and head to the surface. It is a long ways to go, and time is short.

Please roll 2d100, best of 3. First is for workers with the data, second is for workers retrieving Seiner's head.

"I'd like to thank you all for coming tonight. I know these election years can be hectic but nothing is more important to our freedom and liberty then the right to the vote, I-"
Conrad stands at the end of a large table, his shuttle had landed halfway through the party and he had been giving his speech ever since. A large man in a suit whispers something in his ear and the mask of hospitality cracks, although it's difficult to tell for certain with the public new's low quality news broadcast. He gathers his thoughts and continues his speech, although his voice almost quivers in anger. He masks it well.

Your workers clamer through the vents as fast as they can, the data stick hanging from its keychain around your worker's neck in the lead, and in the rear a worker carried the dripping head of Seiner in its mandibles. Your pod droops down into the atmosphere to find a landing zone in the otherwise barren landscape as the Sulaco drifts into position. The last of the evacuation shuttles take off and you hear the crack of thunder as a missile bursts through the atmosphere at hypersonic speeds, the air quickly slowing it to something vaguely considered a reasonable velocity. Another follows through the clouds, then another.

Your drones break through a sealed steel door to the surface and a mix of sand, heat, and whipping winds strikes them. The planet itself is actually quite lovely, perfect weather for your drones, and the pod's shimmering form floats nearby, its thrusters sending sand up in a maelstrom around it. It takes off with your drones, riding the shockwave of a half-dozen nuclear strikes.

>Bring your drones home with the data and sample

The blink drive does its FTL in hops of 5 lightyears anyway unless we want to roll, we already stop in several places along the way. It is completely impossible to "tail" it even if it didn't. What actually kill them is a misfire of anti-cancer mechanism caused by reactivation of oxygen flow. I am pretty sure that Hive can compensate for that.

>>
>>36903534
In a burst of radiation your pod vanishes as it reaches orbit, and you become blind of the Gliese system.

Some short time later your pod falls from the sky over Leeland and flies into your hangar. A team of workers rush in to grab the sample and take it to a medical pod. As it throws the quickly spoiling head into the medical juices of a waiting tank the arms within grasp at it, poking at its tissue and taking samples and tests.

"Seiner has been killed." You say as you send the memory of his death to Theseus.

There is a long pause. Longer than normal. Zero One is entirely silent as every instance reviews the data countless times. Several other recordings are sent back and forth along the surface, and you see Seiner in the laboratory of the Chandra research facility. He is arguing with Elizabeth.
"Don't be ridiculous. After a leak this big I'm surprised it's lasted this long."

Elizabeth is in a panic, her hair undone and her eyes baggy from a lack of sleep. "He is alive, you need to tell them that! They could amend just a few lines of law and the first contact clause will cover him."

"What, are you insane? It's a magnificent work of artistic coding the likes of which has never been seen by man, yes, but it's just a machine. We need to be more worried about our own carriers at this point. Now I managed to-"

"No, you hold on!" Elizabeth snaps, her accent slipping. "Just how do you go about claiming he's not alive?" She points in a fury to the camera where Theseus sits in silence. "He meets every quantifiable criteria we can think of for sapience, so give me one good reason to just unplug him like less then an animal?"

Seiner thinks for a moment, ignoring the console in which Theseus sits trapped. "Because the people with grant money told you to. This was a job, and now it's over. You need to deal with that and move on."

Elizabeth slaps him across the face, a red handprint spreads across his cheek as she storms off. "mach es dir selber!" She shouts.

This is an idea, we could ask for fusion tech in return. Fusion power is commonly used throughout human space, but would take us a long time to research. We could get it out of the way now.

We could actually send in suicide ships to bomb all their shipyards. We have the stealth technology to pull it off.

Then we can demand their surrender; and claim the expansion zone as our own. Then populate it with our dynasty.
>>
>>36905286
We have our own power sources; not sure if they're better or worse than what we have though.
We should definitely ask for shield technology.

If we get a bunch of children and have them take over various worlds in the expansion zone, do you think we should discourage the casual war that our ancestors seemed to do?

Constantly fighting with eachother for land might damage planets or generally make the humans think we're barbaric. That could be a good or bad thing, depending if we aim to ally or war with the humans.

Your frigate moves into what looks like a relatively clear section of the debris field, free of the larger chunks of derelict starships and lunar fragments. A smattering of metal hail indicates your official arrival into Earth orbit, and your ship's cloak flickers in and out against the barrage of scrap. It is nearly halfway through when a piece of lunar stone punctures the hull and lodges itself in the organ of a thruster. It bursts from the pressure and rips a fissure open along the hull, sending chitting into the debris field and adding to the spinning maelstrom of shrapnel.

"We are wounded, mother!" The many component drones of your ship cry out in pain as subsystems report to quasi-thinkers and thrusters madly adjust themselves to compensate for the loss. Your ship bleeds a silvery green ooze as the organic paste of your damage control systems fill the hull breaches, but the lost thrusters remain non-functional, and the ship slowly enters a spin as its hull begins to glow from the heat of reentry.

Lyle has assembled a hammock between two trees, and is halfway through a flask of whisky when a thunder clap sends him spinning face first into the mud for cover.
"Who's shooting?" He says as he reaches for his gun, but as he looks above he sees your corvette falling as a thunderous ball of fire, slowly curving to avoid slamming into the ground.

"What in the fuck?" He says simply.

Your corvette slopes downward at the massive forest filled crater below. Emergency flaps and air brakes open along the hull and are quickly torn away. Retro thrusters fire to slow down the ship and it lowers into the forest below, tearing into the trees and sending foliage and swamp water cascading into the air as it grinds to a halt against the ground.

The many component drones of your ship think in concert, and the subsystem commanding the damage control reports. "Wounded. Can heal in time, but cannot fly."
The others speak in sadness. "No good, no do thing for mother!"

They would respect your position as their mother, but if you ever lay more then one they would very likely break out into occasional war with each other over even the slightest things, and would regularly engage in espionage, political bickering, and cold war Mexican stand-offs when they aren't fighting openly.
Picture an average pair of bickering siblings, only they both posses an interstellar military with neigh inexhaustible manpower. The "ya-huh nu-uh" arguments that crop up in the back of the car are now interplanetary border disputes and the "mom, she's touching me" fiascoes become orbital artillery barrages. For the most part they would keep it out of your antennae and avoid dragging you into their competition for fear of appearing weak by asking for aid.
Or because they don't want to be a taddler, either works.
It sounds like they wouldn't encroach on our territories f we call dib first, they might fight against themselves if we don't pay attention to them though.

i've thought about laying other queen eggs and what i think we should to is lay maybe 5-10 queen eggs and send them out in to unknown space and have them hatch after 100 years apart, this way if we were to fail and die qd could start up hive queen quest 2.0 where we get to play as one of our daughters and obviously we send our memories and tech with them

Lyle pours the swampy mix of sludge from his whisky flask as he stands covered in mud next to his tangled hammock, grumbling under his breath. A gilled worker erupts from the water nearby and he sends the flask into the air as he reaches for his weapon. "Goddammit, stop fucking doing that!" He yells.

"Ride was bumpy! We dig now?" It thinks. The thought skims over Lyle's mind and he shoos it away with his hands.

"Go... go play in the mud over there." He says, and adds under breath, "Damn things, tryin' give me a heart attack, little shits." He returns to his hammock and begins to straighten it out.

Elsewhere your thinkers bring your attention to the construction on Raligha. The thinkers report a deficit of metals, and while the hive is extracting local metals to supplement it, it is at a rate of hardly a single metal per worker per day. We are falling behind our thinker on building an orbital defense grid for leeland. Lets give a thinker a bunch of workers and have it finish our leeland defense grid.

>>36906247
You're being dumb. The hybrids are loyal because they're a mix of human and hive drone DNA. A hybrid queen would be a mix of human and hive queen DNA. Queens are not unquestionably loyal! The mechanisms that make hybrid clones loyal DO NOT EXIST IN A THEORETICAL HYBRID QUEEN.

Now, you could set up a hybrid clone to act as thinker that directs the growth of a hive, but that's not going to be any more effective than quantum thinkers.

>50 Large Harvesters
Your workers sort the eggs throughout your throne room.

In Tau Ceti your pod interrupts your thoughts with a new report. A news broadcast propagating along multiple news outlets is quickly filling local space. They all show the same massive expanding cloud of plasma gradually dissipating over the desert of Tadega.

"We are getting mixed reports of possible anti-government forces at work." Says one broadcaster.
"Our program can confirm that it was the Sulaco that launched the salvo, but we have yet to receive any statement on the matter." Says another.
Mixed reports come and go like fads, spreading across the various news stations before being disproven and retracted.
"We have unconfirmed reports and images of what appears to be a facility at the location, and records indicate a possible military presence, however there is no official record of a base here, and the military is keeping quiet on the matter so far. We will keep you up to date on this developing story as it unfolds."

Eventually you see a number of channels cut to a large chamber where a press officer stands behind a podium.
"It has come to our attention that a number of media outlets have shown growing concern over an apparent orbital strike on the surface of Tadega." He begins. "I would like to inform you all now that the event was, in fact, a scheduled military test of a new method of bunker construction with the intention of developing a method of protecting surface infrastructure and population centers from the risk of orbital bombardments from both anti-government threats, and the ever present Commonwealth risk." The sounds of shutters nearly drown out his voice as he continues. "The test is as yet inconclusive, as we have not yet had the time needed to inspect the target facility, but we hope that we will see the inclusion of this new defensive construction technique in bomb shelters across the Union within the decade." He moves to walk off the stage.
>>

Leeland defense plan:

Lay 25 Aquatic Workers, 25 Radiator Workers, 75 workers, and 25 diggers to begin work on 5more anti-orbital batteries on Leeland. Also add 40 fighter and 20 shuttle space at each of the new orbital batteries.

These are the hubs of our defense network. Once the hubs are completed, we send the construction force to build more orbital defense batteries elsewhere, and then add some more workers and a few farms to the hubs, to make them nominally self sufficient. Then each hub receives 20 strafer drones and 15 heavy fighter drones and 5 air defense drones with the standard armaments.

The suicide strike is just a defense network right now. It could be used to attack, but right now it can be used to target anyone who gets too close sticking their nose where it don't belong. Though if it were used offensively, the easy answer to stop that alliance in the bud is to have enough to completely cripple everyone simultaneously.

Different anon, but I don't want any daughters at this point for a variety of reasons:

We're haven't consolidated our position, we're surrounded by hostile or potentially hostile factions, a daughter represents an asset we cannot control to maintain our interests, there is no practical benefit to having a daughter at this point, we're currently engaged in a shadow war with a faction that engages in genocide against our and other species, I think it's unethical and foolish to introduce a daughter into he political bedlam we're embroiled in at this point.

No it is not? There are, explicitly, no benefits in having NPC nations colonizing stuff instead of doing it ourself.

Hive doesn't have decision loops - all data is managed by Queenie in real time, no matter if the relevant drone is in our throne room or in next spiral arm. There are no corruption or wastage either.

While our daughters will obey us, they will also waste resources in the internal conflicts - QD explicitly stated that.

Can we make a drone that's just a ball of arms.

We should bug Heretic for more info on them, he's the only living character who has anything like first hand experience with them.

>Fusion
You contact Theseus as he orbits in the Clarke. "How is your understanding of fusion reactors?" You ask. "You could pay for the Hive's assistance with such knowledge."

He sends a data packet to Zero One and responds as it returns. "That is acceptable."

>Research Finished
Fusion power
Another technology that you are aware of, but that you do not have as great a grasp of. While a fusion reactor does not offer the sheer power of a Power Tap, it is far more stable once built, and requires far less valuable materials to make and maintain.

>Microfusion power
This reasonably powerful but incredibly safe power source distributes a number of micro fusion reactors throughout the ship, decreasing the likelihood of a critical hit disabling a ship's power supply. In addition, increased power fed to railguns and accelerators alike increase the damage dealt by all weapons, and increased power to ion thrusters improve maneuvering of all ships. This replaced the default power supply of all ships passively.

[New ship adaptation unlocked]
>Fusion Core
This large and powerful reactor core is more volatile and more potent than the standard microfusion power system. It is more concentrated, and thus offers no protection from critical hits, but it offers more power, and thus greater damage and maneuverability bonuses over micro-fusion. When the ship is destroyed, or when triggered with a self-destruct, the ship can detonate in a nuclear explosion to destroy any salvageable components and damage nearby vessels.

Your thinkers pour over the information within the data stick, opening the first of the research logs. It shows Seiner in his bubble suit within a tent. The sounds of Leeland's spring weather can be heard outside.
"Log regarding new species. Xeno..." He thinks for a moment. "Xeno Formicidae, that seems good. Insectoid in appearance. Six limbs, two of which are graspers capable of manipulating tools, however I have yet to see them do so." He grabs the camera and pulls it closer, then quietly peeks it out of the tent. Outside you see your speaker some ways away sitting with Lee under a mushroom tree's dull glow. "They seem to show curiosity to humans, and are occasionally social. This one at least has been with us for a while. It appears to be a kind of specially bred social caste capable of verbal speech. I'm still not sure, but I think it was born in response to human interaction."
He pulls the camera back into the tent and looks into it, smiling. "No idea how they communicate, possibly radio, but more likely something else. Gray think's they're settlers, possibly from a kind of seed ship be found in the jungle. Honestly I find myself fond of the theory." The video cuts out abruptly as he hits a switch.

>>Ceph thought shell
This complex device contains a bundle of nerves running into the higher brain of the host Ceph and into a large central processor. The processor itself is mostly organic, and combines the sensory input of all the small brains within the Ceph body into a single consciousness. There are also several oddities within the shell. Your scans detect a tiny implant of unknown composition within the “brain” of the shell that seems to give off very low tachyon emissions. The shell itself is not all that dissimilar to the design of your own parasite, and you think that you could have a parasite drone fulfill the duties of the central brain of the shell without too much trouble.

Seiner cuts into view, his bubble helmet deflated around his head and his head covered in sweat. He is laughing hysterically.
"I can almost certainly rule out radio, but they are easily capable of using it! Our craft have been picking up a number of signals from the planet, but after running it through some screenings nothing shows any signs of intelligent patterns. It's not enough to actually get funding yet, but hell, at least it's a lead. I'll take that over old journals any day!" He returns to his giggling. "If I can find the right financer, I think I can take this further."

You hear a door hiss open. "Sir, we're breaking orbit now, if you want to send any communications you'll need to post them before we hit warp. You said you needed to contact someone?"

Seiner drops the camera to a table. "Yes, yes I have a letter that needs to find its way to Gemini immediately!"

Thanks, Anon-cun_t__

There are a number of valid reasons we might want to establish a base there, including but not limited to: giving the Union military a taste of our explosive growth potential and combat prowess (while maintaining our primitive disguise) so that when we're revealed as space faring they think twice before initiating hostilities, and/or prompting greater instability in the Union by revealing that they violated Leeland quarantine and bringing the alien rights issues back into the limelight. bBt i'm on my phone and don't have the patience to type the rest out.

There are also reasons we don't want a base there but you really don't have to be such a little shit about it.
