September 9th, 2053.

You are Prinz Eugen, a heavy cruiser of the German Kriegsmarine. You were paired with Bismarck during the war, and though your guns were never enough to match hers your speed, torpedoes, and armor helped make you a unique threat all your own. But right now Bismarck isn't here: instead you find yourself surrounded by those who were with you at Operation Crossroads, along with several of their friends and comrades. They may once have been your enemies, but your many shared experiences have brought you together. No hard feelings remain from the old days.

You just hope that this time it doesn't all end in an atomic fireball.

“You have returned from the dead?” you ask Maryland, who now sits across from you between Saratoga and Nagato in your team's shared living space in Honolulu. “How is this possible, Fraulein Maryland?”

“It was... messy,” Mary replies, pausing to find the right words.

Unlike Sara and Nagato, who are understandably happy to have their friend back, Kongou seems skeptical as well. “I know all the rest of us came back from the dead before,” she muses. “Hell, Prinzessin spent some time after the war as a propeller.”

You remember that: your propeller was on display at Laboe for a while, once the radiation levels were manageable.

“None of us,” Kongou continues, pouring herself a cup of tea, “have ever come back twice.”

Let me get this straight.

So far, Maryland got revived as an early kanmusu but didn't survive the procedure since she got scrapped or something. She got a naval burial.
Then the Abyss got to her and they revived her as a Ta Class BB, where the girls first saw her.
When she came with them for a patrol last time, a Symbiotic Battleship Hime's monster backpack speared her with a bony spine and brought her back to the Abyss, albeit with her consent.
Now she's back as a proper BB Hime sans her monster backpack?

“Take your time, Frauline?” you suggest. “We'll be here a while yet, so you can take care to explain it correctly and carefully, yes?”

Maryland takes a deep breath, and lets it out slowly. She's obviously nervous, trying to clear her mind enough to explain something she herself may not fully understand despite having experienced it in person.

“The first thing you should know,” she tells you, “is that I'm not the Maryland you knew before.”

Nagato sits up straighter, obviously alarmed at the revelation. “What do you mean?”

“Are you saying you are a different ship's soul?” you press.

“Not at all. I mean that there were at one point seven Abyssal ship-girls based on the USS Maryland. I was one of them.”

“Then how're you wearing her clothes?” Saratoga asks, confused at what Maryland is telling her. “That doesn't make sense!”

Maryland gestures emphatically to Kongou, who passes her a cup of tea that she downs in a single gulp. Then, she wipes her lips and clears her throat.

“The Maryland you knew gave her life, knowing the Abyssal wanted to reclaim her,” Mary explains, quite cautiously. “It was all part of her plan, you see... a plan she knew she would have trouble explaining to you.”

>>

>>
>>36908675
Oh ffs... I thought you were better than this AoC, especially after apparently fixing things in the last thread, now you go and undo all your work...
>>
I will say it one time: you, as a collective, brought a non-combatant with you on a mission, and instead of stopping her you chose to support her with naval artillery that ended with a mediocre set of rolls.

The NPC had a plan, and everything you chose to do and all of the rolls you made supported it coming to fruition. This is part of what she had planned.
>>
>>36908675

I gave you a chance after your fuckup the first time around, you killed her off based on a single vote and roll, then it looked like giving you a second chance was worth it when she came back, and now you go and burn all the trust you built up with us, your players, again, for the second time, and ruin everything you were attempting to fix.

Don't pull that bullshit 'collective' excuse, you railroaded her death based on a single vote, then you go and shit down our throats a second time when we think you are improving.

How could there be seven copies of a single ship's soul? Also, if the copy that had been with us had died, how is this one here, and know of what she had planned?
And Saratoga does make a point about how this copy could be wearing the clothes that normally an Abyssal wouldn't wear.

So, the Abyssals found a way to copy souls? But the souls are linked together, so that when one broke free of Abyssal control, when she was reconnected to the other by the Abyssals recovering her body, they all broke free?
>>
>>36908942
Well theres 9 unique IP's, excluding you and the anon you replied to, assuming your not the same person, and OP, means there are at least 6 anons including myself calling OP out on his bullshit.

>>
>>36909064
Don't lump me in with you fucktards I didn't vote for that shit and I won't take OPs bullshit laying down, the fact he decided to fuck us over on one single roll is indicative of his shitty QMing and this is the nail in the coffin. His players were willing to give him another chance and trust him again, and what does he do? He immediately goes and breaks their trust with a shitty Ship of Theseus and retcons the original railroad into being even more of a convoluted asspull railroad.
>>
>>36909117
I understand consequences fine, I also understand shitty railroading just fine, and its not my stupidity that let OP pull this shit, you voted for that and enabled OPs railroading.

I can understand fucking up once and improving and moving on, but immediately burning your players a second time by fucking up and making the first fuckup worse? Thats just unacceptable.
>>

>>
>>36908675
"Wait," you mutter. "You said there *were* seven?"

Maryland nods. "There were."

"How is that possible? With kanmusu it's always been one ship, one soul," Kongou points out.

"We were... fragments," Maryland offers. "The Abyssal had little in the way of materials to work with. It was one body, and one soul: not enough to learn from."

"So you were split into multiple bodies?" you conclude.

She nods. "Yes. Bodies were crafted for us to function with a fragment of a soul."

"That is the second time you referred to the Abyssals in the singular form," Nagato points out. "I take it that was no mistake?"

It takes several moments for Maryland to work out a response. "Well, it IS singular," she finally explains. "I know it sounds strange, but the living ships you see are hardly intelligent on their own. Probably no smarter than a housecat."

"A hivemind?" you posit. "Together, they can manage higher brain functions?"

"That's probably correct," she tells you. "Clever, Princess. See, the Abyssal thought that our navies worked the same way. So when the first human ship fired on an Abyssal node..."

"It assumed we were all its enemies," Nagato concludes. "But what was your plan?"

"When the Abyssal created myself, and the other Marys, it wanted to understand us. Kanmusu. The beings it recognized as individuals."

"And it wanted to recover you to see what you learned?" Sara asks.

Mary nods. "The Abyssal learns by reincorporating nodes, and so a part of the Maryland you met was incorporated into me... along with her memories of you. Combined with my own fragments of memory from the original Mary, I grew closer to what I once was."

"And so there *were* several of you," Nagato mutters. "The others... you incorporated them?"

Mary shudders. "Some came willingly... two I was forced to kill and incorporate myself. I gained power as I did so, and my memories filled out to where they are now."

Whether you voted for it or not doesn't matter, you fucking idiot. This is a quest where actions are decided by majority vote.
If your vote fails, then tough shit, dumbass. That's what happens.
If you can't accept that your vote didn't win, and there were consequences and you blame the QM for them, then you're nothing but a whining shittard.

And of course things went bad on that roll; we backed a high risk-high reward type of gambit, with someone who had no armor, going up against an opponent that the entire party would have been hard-pressed to win against even if everyone was fresh.

What the fuck are you even doing here? Get the fuck out and stay out.

Physically, her body is dead. Her fragment of soul and her memories are part of the last remaining Maryland, and were what drove her to execute the second half of her plan.

"That sounds like it was horrible," you offer in consolation. "I'm sorry."

Nagato's hand finds Mary's shoulder, and in return Mary's hand gives hers a squeeze. "It was. But that was my plan, and it made no sense not to follow through once I put it into play."

"And the dress?" Kongou asks. "Why would you wear that other Maryland's dress?"

"Well..." Mary muses, putting her finger to her chin. You see Kongou lean forward, and even you find yourself waiting to hear the explanation.

"... I really liked that dress," Mary finishes.

Kongou falls flat on her face in surprise.

"It was that simple!?"

"It's a nice dress!" Mary insists. "A girl's gotta look her best, right?"

"Well," Nagato concludes, "that is enough for me. So far as I am concerned, you are truly Maryland."

"You'll find no disagreement from me," Sara agrees.

"Good to know," Mary sighs. "Sorry I couldn't explain it better that day. Not enough time or command over the English language, you know."

"Just don't do it again," Sara tells her.

"Poor Nagato probably couldn't handle it," Kongou mutters in a voice you're pretty sure only you heard.

Well, that settles one matter... but now there's a question that's nagging your mind. Something you're pretty sure is your Germanic heritage coming out into the open.

Nagato preempts your own question. "So how do we report this?"

"I think we have to take it to Admiral Clarke," you point out. "We've been honest with him so far, and he hasn't betrayed our trust. He may even cover for us."

"And if he doesn't," Sara counters, "we're boned."

"Mary blew up her gear... fantastic explosion, by the way," Kongou nods in Mary's direction, and the American battlewagon feigns a little bow. "We might be able to set her up with some new kit."

Nagato nods. "That settles it, then. We will make a report to Admiral Clarke, and only to the Admiral. Agreed?"

Your teammates don't complain.

After about an hour, you welcome the Admiral into your re-fitted hotel down at the water level. You notice that this time the old man is in his khakis rather than his whites: good, that means he's probably relaxed. That'll make it easier... though his collar insignia is askew.

Damn your Teutonic OCD. You wonder silently how inappropriate it would be to straighten the errant pin.

"Admiral," you salute over the silver star's goading. "Thank you for agreeing to see us on such short notice."

"Not a problem, Princess," he growls. "Show me what Nagato mentioned in her message, please."

You lead him up to the upper floor, where he is quickly introduced to the new Maryland. His eyes linger on her horns, then her dress as he circles her.

"Looks very similar," he muses. "I suppose you would know better than I would whether she thinks and talks the same."

"Eyes up dear," Mary quips as the Admiral passes behind her.

Nagato nods. "We have heard her story, but you may wish to hear it yourself."

"It's a lot to take in," he admits. "A hive mind, and recycled parts... do you know where the center of the hive mind is?"

"North," Mary tells him. "I'm not sure where, but the Abyssal's body works better in cold water. The nerve center would be in the North Pacific, or maybe above the Arctic Circle."

"So we were right," Clarke mutters. "Hot damn."

Finally.

"ONI thinks that based on the patterns of attack, the Abyssal favors colder waters," he explains. "Satellite telemetry also suggests there's something up near the Aleutians. Navy thinks the Abyssal is going to try and spread into the North Atlantic by going under the ice."

"Why haven't they done so already?" Kongou asks with a frown. "Our subs can do it."

"Because the nodes breath air," Maryland explains. "They would need to surface."

"We need to get Fraulein Maryland armed," you conclude. "Admiral? Can that be done before we ship out to Japan?"

Your heart skips one beat, then another, anticipating the Admiral's next words with all your attention. You feel your eyes widen, your muscles tense, and your hair stand on end...

You don't wait to be told twice.

"Come on!" you practically shout. "Mach schnell! I wouldn't want to keep my older sister waiting!"

"I made you a promise, did I not?" Nagato grins at you as you board the water taxi that Admiral Clarke hired for the trip over. "A member of the Big Seven never goes back on her word."

"Well, Nelsol and Rodnol were always a bit finicky," Mary corrects. "But hey, Nagato here is good people. Bet she had it all worked out in advance."

Nagato nods. "I wanted it to be a surprise... after Mary's apparent death I admit I quite forgot."

"She was a right mess withoutcha, mate," Kongou mutters quietly to Mary. "Do that to 'er again and I'll stick a rifle right in yer gob and give ya a cordite flossing myself, don't think I won't."

"Noted," Mary gulps.

Finally, you arrive at Pear Harbor: home of the Tenth Street Fleet Girl Station. One of only a handful of places where Kanmusu can be created, modified, and outfitted with any confidence in the result. Admiral Clarke waves you through no less than seven check points and past three biometric scanners before you arrive in the innermost lab: often jokingly referred to as the "Maternity Ward".

A scientist of some sort in a labcoat tries to stop you.

"This is a restricted area," he tells Clarke. "I can't allow civilian access."

"I'm not a civilian," you counter hotly. "My big sisters are in there, you schweinhund, and you will NOT keep me from seeing them. If you TRY, then we will have a problem. Alles klar?"

Admiral Clarke gives the scientist a dangerous smile. "You'd better let her in, Doctor, or she'll huff, and she'll puff, and she'll..."

Thankfully, that seems to be all you need to shut the man up.

The Maternity ward is a sterile place, and not one where it'd be nice to wake up. You've been there. You all have.

The whitewash, the machinery, the pure, uncut, utterly alien sensation of primal human fear and disorientation. It's a wonder none of you have gone mad waking up to that.

But your sisters deserve better. And they're going to get it.

On one table in a featureless room, there lies a young blonde woman. Her body is lifeless, unbreathing, and pale as death. Her uniform is like yours, sort of, but a little more dignified and less "cute".

Next to her there's another pale young woman, this one with shorter, darker hair. The brunette wears a uniform modified with some sort of camouflage-patterend panels. Both carry radar aerials like your own.

A surge of electricity passes into them, and a monitor on one wall flares into life showing both of their pulses. An intravenous drip flows into the arm of each body: you know from your basic orientation and training that this mixture contains red blood cells, the hemoglobin in which is crafted from ferric material taken from the Bismarck and the Tirpitz. Their bones are impregnated with the same material as well, taken up by the cortical bone as it formed and incorporated into the crystalline metallic structure.

Their bodies suitably tempered by scientific processes that by all accounts should not work, they become the subject of the mystical component. You're not sure what happens at this point: nobody really is.

All you know is that the blonde one's eyes flick open, and you know immediately that it's her.

You thought you lost her, but here she is, looking right at you, a question in her eyes.

"... what?"

>What do you say?

Wait a minute. Bismarck and Tirpitz are surely going to be a little bit more, well, German. We had time to come about, they have just been reborn after their sinking at the hands of the Royal Navy. Thank fuck Kongō is half-Japanese, I guess?
>>
>>36911245
Your arms somehow find Bismarck through your tears, and you cry quietly into her uniform.

“Wilkommen zurück, 'ne Schwester!” you manage, stifling a sob.

"Wirklich?" Bismarck asks quietly. "Are you Prinz Eugen? Surely that cannot be... and am I speaking English? How is that possible? Why am I a girl? Why are we both girls?"

Next to her, Tirpitz swings her legs off the table, sitting quietly with her head cocked at you in confusion. She's waiting for an explanation, so you give it to them.

"The war is over and Hitler has been dead for over a century, and we've been brought back as human girls to fight alien ship-monsters with possibly magical equipment using some sort of Japanese mystical science thing and our remains."

There's a long pause.

"Okay," your sister tells you cheerfully. "Point me to the aliens and I will crush them, but I need a weapon."

"That's... you're okay with that?"

"Fraulein," Bismarck chides you, "last I remember I was fighting the whole Royal Navy, and now I have breasts. Und auch so hübsch! This, I can work with. But there is something I need, to help me cope..."

You pass Bismarck a small bottle of schnapps you snuck in with you when nobody was paying attention.

"Ah! Truly, you are my kin!" she declares, taking a swig.

You eye Tirpitz, who has yet to speak, carefully. "Tirpitz?" you ask cautiously. "Hallo? Bist du hier mit uns?"

TIrpitz nods silently.

"Are you okay?" you presse gently.

Tirpitz nods again.

"You... aren't much for conversation, are you?"

Tirpitz shakes her head.

"Achtung!" Bismarck calls, tossing the half-empty bottle of schnapps at Tirpitz's head. "Have some of this. Maybe it'll loosen your lips, jawohl?"

Tirpitz catches the bottle, raises it lightly in a small salute, and downs it.

"Besser?" Bismarck asks, looking her sister over.

Tirpitz nods. "Ja."

"Well," you interrupt, "follow me and I'll show you around. My team is waiting in the armory."

A few hallways and turns later, and past a lot of scampering technicians in labcoats, you find the armory.

"Here you are!" you announce, waving at your teammates. "Nagato is our leader, then you have Kongou, Saratoga, myself, and our new member, Mary."

"I'm half alien!" Mary waves flippantly.

"Since I cannot half crush you, you get a pass," Bismarck jokes as she and Tirpitz salute. "I am Bismarck, formerly Kriegsmarine. I've always wanted to see Maryland."

Mary does a little show as the rest of your team returns their salutes.

"And you would be Tirpitz?" Nagato asks, smiling warmly at the taciturn battleship girl.

Tirpitz blushes and nods. "Ja."

"Pleased to meetcha both, Frow Lines!" Kongou greets. You're sure she deliberately mangled that line, to see what would happen.

"Ah, a half-Tommy," Bismarck replies. "I take my tea black."

"I think we'll get along great," Kongou grins.

The C-5 Galaxy only took you as far as Kaneda Airbase, on Okinawa. There you and the rest of your team met up with the Malacca battlegroup, spearheaded by Kirishima, Hiei, Akagi,, and Kaga. It warmed your heart to see Kongou reunited with two of her sisters, even just for a few hours while your planes refueled. Though their personalities are all different, Hiei being more supportive and Kirishima more analytical and precise, you can tell they genuinely adore each other.

It's like you and Bismarck, and to a lesser extent Tirpitz. You're drawn together like that, inseparable even after death.

Saratoga and Maryland were thrilled to see two American battlewagons in town as well, with their destroyer escorts. The Johnston, Hoel, North Carolina, and Washington insisted on taking you all to the Officers' Club for drinks. The base CO treated you all.

Then it was back into the C-5, bound for Mutsu bay. The aircraft flew about three hundred meters off the surface of the water, just above its stall speed of 210 kilometers per hour, letting you and your fellow Kanmusu parachute into the water: there was no runway in the Aomori Prefecture that could handle a Galaxy anymore.

Finally, you're greeted by Nagato's sister Mutsu in a tearful reunion. Nagato ruffles her sister's short crop of brown hair, setting her slug-like antennae askew as she introduces Mary. Mutsu's almost as excited to see Maryland as Nagato was, though her old friend's new horns confuse her to no end.

You spot Haruna and Ise and Mogami, and Kitakami and Shimakaze and Hiryuu. And that's what finally gets to you: Hawaii, Malacca, Channel Islands, Baha, Midway, Kwajelain, Okinawa, Melbourne.

"They're all here," you mutter, grabbing Sara by her collar.

"What do you mean?" Sara asks, her eyes narrowing at you. "What's wrong?"

"They've assembled us all," you continue. "What in Himmel do they need ALL of us here for? What have the Admiralties got planned?"
