You've made it halfway across the godsdamn forest, dragging probably several hundred kilograms of people with you. Not that they're dead weight or anything, you were literally towing the boat.

There was dragging going on, is what you're trying to say.

And now, not even a days walk from your goal, something, some monster, is trying to get in your way.

_________________________________________________________

You stand over your waking friends lividly glowing with anger- The patterns across your legs and hands burning near white, flickering cracks of molten fury dancing across your chitin.

There's a resounding crack as the thing tries to pull itself further into the tree- Or tries to drag the tree down to it's level.
You don't know, don't care.
It's in your way. It's threatening your family.

You level an iridescent spear and ready yourself.

>Defence! Stab anything that gets near your nest!
>Offence! Drive it back! You need room to get everyone down!
>All out! Climb all over this bastard and show it your teeth!

It's a giant standing rioght in front of our improvised nest.
Any attack on our current position is liable to bring the thing crashing down, whether we defend adequatly or not.

This means we need to either force it to defend or direct its attention elsewhere by climbing out of the enst and on it.

Rebuilder of the Lost, Restorer of the Ancient, Spearwielder, Dungeonbreaker and Friend of Oakring.

>It roared at us
Well, its eyes widened and it growled when we went for our spear. That's it.

Not exactly a declaration of war. Might still be hostile but Lyra will feel the SillySpider if she picked a fight with something like this for nothing.
>>
You don't even think about it.

You howl a warcry and throw yourself out of the nest, hurtling towards the monster.
There's a moment of vertigo as you legs claw the air, chitin clicking uselessly-

And then you collide, skidding across and down the monster's hide.

It's not like climbing a tree. Not at all.

Your legs dig in, drawing blood and making the creature flinch away, forcing another growl past it's curled lips.

One massive hand, three fingers tipped in claws, swings towards you- an open handed slap, brushing away a pest.
You are an Arachne.

You meet the hand with your spear, Punching straight into the palm and catching it on the crossguard, easily holding the hand at bay. A howl of pain, and the fingers start to close, furiously seeking you out, and you answer with a blast of lightning, the creatures arm spasming, flying open and pulling away.

You push forward, upward, clambering over tensing muscles and protruding spikes of bone.

You can see your friends in the corner of your eye, Sara working hard to drop people to the forest floor- The branches below the boat are twisted and broken, and it's only your web holding it up now.

REQM, the hell does this thing look like? We could be fighting an eel with arms for all I know. Does it have legs? Arms? More than one eye?

We can't effectively fight what we cannot see.
>>
>>36919205
At this point Lyra doesn't really see much either, beyond the limbs we get described.
>>
>>36919205
>We can't effectively fight what we cannot see
Maybe that's the point, since it's night, we're under the canopy, and this thing is so big that we're too close to be able to see it all.
>>
>>36919238
We can use fire to light up the area around us.
>>
>>36919293
Just to clarify, I mean summon fire, not light the area on fire which we would have to put out later.
>>
>>36919293
Which we neither did nor would change much about the fact that we'd have to stand 20m away from the thing without any obstacles between us to get a full view of it.

We didn't get a good enough view yet, so we don't know what it looks like yet.
>>
>>36919224

Just saying, the confusion and complete lack of direction or consensus is because we have no idea what this thing is or how we can fight it. Otherwise, solid plans would win out.

We know it can moan, but we don't know what it's mouth looks like. We know it has claws, but not how it stands.

As such, we can't say how to immobilize or bring it down. Zapping it along the spine seems like the only thing we really know might work, since electrocuting the arm forced it to relax, indicating an underlying nervous system structure.

Of course, we only get ONE lightning blast per day, and now that's gone. Really wish we would have taken the all day, everyday stun rod as opposed to the one shot ranged bombard.
>>
>>36919324

True, we don't know how many legs it has, or if it even has legs...
>>
>>36919403
>ONE lightning blast per day
Three, actually.

And I agree we should try to get a better look, but sofar we haven't, and thats the reason for a lack of information, hopefully once Sara gets on the case we can shed light on the issue.
>>
>>36919419
I'd rather she murder something with the light.
>>
>>36919437
Either she charges up another Genkidama and we get light that way, or we would be better served by having some of her Star Blessing lights circle it so Lann can start shooting.
>>
Have we considered pouring molten hot magma all over the giant?

Because goddamn, that would take care of him (or his ability to move around) pretty quickly.
>>
>>36919462
It takes some time for us to call up magma.
>>
>>36919462

>>36919462
Our righteous indignation will make it go faster.
>>
>>36919473

It'd be worth it, though. Just have Sara and Jin guide it towards defcon fuckzone zero and unleash the molten hot fury of the magma.
>>
>>36919462
>>36919510
I don't really want to wreck the forest of our future hosts like that. Magma has a tendency to set things on fire.
Not to mention all the wrecking we would be doing in the process of calling it up.
>>
>>36919518
I think if we take the effort to make a chasm with molten stone in it, we might as well just drop the thing in it.
>>
>>36919526
If there are monsters about we aren't IN their section of forest yet. This is the monstery bit. They probably don't care if we burn a piece of this. And we're by a river. We can put it out
>>
>>36919462
>>36919473
i honestly wish we couldn't period.

we are plenty powerful without magma powers, and it will trivialize any fight we do use it on, which is boring as hell, sort of like using cheat codes on the first playthrough of a game.
>>
>>36919555
I would still be disinclined to destroy a part of a forest before requesting something from a race of druids unless we really have to.
While callin gup Magma to drown our enemies in it is really cool, its not by far the only thing we can do.
>>
>>36919584
>and it will trivialize any fight we do use it on
It really doesn't. It takes us about as much time to call magma as it takes our sister to call up her giant death star.We had to be perfectly still and concentrate to do it.

Assuming we even succeed high enough on a earth control roll, although that concern is probably pointless with this quest.
>>
>>36919584

It takes a while to call up, so it'd delegate us to the Spirit Bomb role for a bit. But I just want to do it once.

I mean, come on man. Liquid molten hot magma.

Your friends are on the ground and you are a few stories up, climbing on a monster.
The thing roars again, rolling- well, shoulders probably, but you can't see enough of it to be sure. It's trying it's level best to throw you off, but your feet are firmly embedded in it's flesh.

An idea of what you're fighting is in order, you think.

You skitter across it's back, spear in one hand, the other already preparing webbing. You call, and the earth answers, however dimly. All the ingredients of a successful monster demolition.

You sling your webbing towards a nearby tree- it sticks reliably enough, and you loop it around your forearm twice with a flick of your wrist.

The web twangs audibly as it extends as far as it can, and you slide sideways on the monster, drawing furrows as you brace yourself against its movement. Your eyes close a half second and you will the forest floor to mud, the monster already starting to stumble, collapsing into the tree you've chosen.

Clawed hands reach out, taking hold of the bark and holding itself up, and you spin your spear downwards, driving the point towards what you hope is a spine. Your will meets the magic of your weapon, and lightning arcs across the haft again, sending limbs jerking and flailing, the rush of wind catching your hair as the beast slams into the ground.

Your earth magic had nothing to do with that tremor.
Jin has taken to the sky- and Sara has already begun to fill it with stars, each orb casting shadows in every direction, light blazing in
the clustered forest.

Lann has her arrows in hand and a worried expression on her face- You can see Sheszka's bundle neatly tucked at the bottom of your tree.

we can eat our own poison.
its other people who aren't arachne who are in danger.
I would worry about applying it, could end up stabbing ourselves in the mouth as we are not exactly on stable ground.
also, we could just bite it and inject poison directly. of course with its massive size poison is gonna be very dilute and of limited effectiveness.

Also, also, the char sheet says we automatically poison our weapons (since a while ago) unless specifically stated otherwise.

There's a monster down, and now you have backup.

You hurry over muscles and bone, making your way to the creature's shoulder.
It's next to its head, for sure this is a shoulder.

The beast twists it's head, one maddened eye glaring towards you.

Is this thing a bear?
A giant goddamn bear.
What is it with you and bears, anyway.
Maybe Mom was right.

It snarls, and you turn your attention back to the work at hand, slamming your spear into the bears shoulder joint, tearing muscle and scarring bone.

It has the weirdest paws you have ever seen.

Sara and Jin, having sufficiently lit the forest, have turned their attentions to murdering its inhabitants.
Stars streak through the liquid night, impacting with tiny claps and sizzling noises, burning through the air at a rate you can't comprehend.

Lann has pulled herself back to the tree, standing guard over Sheszka- and Nin apparently.

You tear your spear free and drive it down again, keeping your feet while the beast flails in pain, one arm limp already.

Its just that poisoning our weapons is part of arachne combat methods, so we advanced in those when we started thinking of doing that.
We do not poison our weapons by default, and we had minor discussion on that point in another fight where we got clarified by REQM that our poison could harm Jin and Sheszka if ingested by way of poisened flesh.

We all know this is a self insert quest. REQM clearly has a taste for bear and enjoys a challenging hunt. Why else would a Giant Spider live in Canada? Canadian Grizzlies a big and tough. They could probably make him work for it.

We need to attempt new recipes of melted food. Spices, blends of meat, varying levels of cooked/smoked, sky is the limit.

Then we can get people to try our nutrient shakes using our intimidating presence.
>>
Back and writing!
>>
>>36921668
>Then we can get people to try our nutrient shakes
Anon, we make our meat slurpies by injecting our venom into the meat. It would poison any non-Arachne we gave it to.

Although, I do like the idea of trying different spices and blends of meat. Wrap a little bear, wolf and rabbit in a single bundle and desolve them together. See what it tastes like!
>>
>>36921763
I thought venom was distinctly different from the digestive juices spiders melt stuff with.

Or am I misinformed?
>>
>>36921763
On the other hand, other arachne might like the smoothies. Maybe even throw some veggies in there for flavouring.
>>
>>36921803
You are misinformed in most cases.
I think there might be spiders where that is the case, of the poison not being responsible for that, but I can't think of one right now.
In Lyras case, her poison is explicitly what she melts her food with, as we know from the fight with the kobolds.
>>
>>36921803
As far as I know, the venom does the job.

>>36921836
>Maybe even throw some veggies
I have no idea if vegetable matter would break down the same way as animal protein. We'll have to wrap and inject a few vegies as test cases. See what we end up with.
>>
>>36921883
>>36921803
As addition to this, Lyra and Arachne are kinda weird for spiders, since "normally" spiders melt their food by vomiting their digestive fluid all over their prey, which I'm fairly sure Lyra does not.

It barely takes any steps at all to reach the beast's neck.

Comparative steps, anyway.
You have eight legs, you take more steps on technicality.

You brace yourself over it, legs splayed against shoulder and skull alike to keep you steady.
And then you stab.

Your first strike fails to find anything fatal. Or it wasn't deep enough. It isn't important.
You pull it free and try again.
And again.

Your spear punches fist-sized holes across the bear's neck, perforating it's skin without halt. You hit something, and the beast shudders beneath you.

You pull your spear free and catch a gout of blood with your face.

Spitting and cursing, you try to wipe your face clean as you slide down the bear to the forest floor. You upend your shield over your head and turn it on, pouring cool water across your face and hair, rubbing frantically to clean yourself.

Your friends mostly laugh.
Which happens a lot, now that you think about it.
Other people need to be less fortunate in ways that are okay for you to laugh about, because the last week or so has been kind of awful on your part.

Lann smiles.
"Bears, huh?"
Sara nods.
"Bears."
Jin cocks her head to one side, and Nin looks on in confusion.
"It is always bears, isn't it?"

"It attacked us!"
"Maybe they can tell, yes?"
"Tell what."
"That you are some sort of bear-slayer."
"I am not a bear-slayer!"

Nin nods solemnly.
"Lyra, I think you might need new hobbies. Hunting bears is unfitting for a quee-"
"You little- Get over here!"
"Heee!"

"Get down here!"
"Milady, I think you might be frustrated-"
"I will show you frustrated you ridiculous-"

"Ah. Lyra. We are still in the forest. At night. Beside a very large pile of meat."
"Ah."

The group looks, as one, to the fallen and bleeding form of the bear.

Your spear heats in your hands, glowing cherry red- you take a few quick steps to the tree containing your boat and slash.

A charred 'X' is seared into the truck, defacing bark and wood alike.
You nod to yourself, and turn back to your friends.

"Take some meat, yes? Don't let all of it go to waste."
Lann nods, heading for the corpse, but Jin lingers.

"Are bears your fire?"
You tuck the harpy under one arm as she giggles, heading for your kill.

It doesn't take much in the way of effort to hack a few sizeable steaks free, and a little webbing goes a long way when it comes to carrying bloody steaks and not making a giant mess.

With everyone packed, you gesture to Lann, and she heads off into the dark, searching for new tree.

The moon illuminates the forest where it can, peering through thick branches, revealing massive roots, giant bushes and more.
You skip a few trees that look lived in, and ignore anything that has it's lower branches torn clear.

You want sleep, not another fight. Regardless of what your tittering moth and harpy say.

Lann points out a clean looking tree, and you all speed across the ground towards it- You're first by a long shot, with no Sheszka to compete. You trail a web line into the foliage, and haul up the less vertically inclined of your friends one you're safe above.

Sara sets about clearing space and weaving something like a giant hammock- or maybe a cocoon. In any case, no one's going to be falling out.

You pile in together, cuddling in one giant pile.
It isn't long before sleep takes you- Adrenaline notwithstanding, you are a growing spider, and you need your sleep.
You can practically hear Nin's voice in your head making snide comments.
Parts of you are growing, anyway.

You're not sure if you sighed out loud or not, but your eyes are heavy and your friends are warm.
