Book 2 ~The Travel of the Blazing Ember~

After dying in a plane accident and being reborn in a world of swords and magic rules by RPG-like laws of reality, our MC has been busy with his new family and friends.

The 1st war between the Alquian Empire and the Coalition is over. A time where two forces fighting under similar, yet different flags representing the might of the old kingdom (A golden gryphon over a white flag) and the desire for freedom of the northern realms (A white gryphon over a blue flag) ended with no clear winner, in what the sages already call the Gryphon's War.

Currently, we are visiting the ancient Heavenly Empire in the northwestern continent, trying to help a little princess friend of us to reunite with her twin sister after a 2 years exile.

hi! Oh btw, I went to the doctor and he put me on the strongest eyedrops the hospital had. Said that if that didint do it, we would go to surgery, but that there was a huge chance i would go blind from it.

So ill try these drops for two weeks and then the surgery. Let's try to get things moving so we can get as much as possible done, alright?

When someone else shows up, of course, tho being xmas its likely noone else will, so if noone shows in 10 minutes, we'll just start

ok good to know if you do get the surgery i hope it goes well

No wonder they didn't want to push surgery if there was a blindness risk.

Hope in the end it all goes well regardless.

Almost.

I hope that advice is solid, because I don't recall eyedrops being very good at curing conditions, just staving off symptoms.

Also, get your trip back on.

well, what he said was: The surgery has a big chance of leaving you blind.

But what I heard after all his explaining was: The surgery WILL reduce your eyesight further because the stress and added strain to the eye will kill plenty of the few remaining nerve cells since we have taken so long to do it.

So if we had gone to surgery when I was 40% blind I may have been left 70% blind, but it would have stopped.

Now that im %95+ blind, it may leave me fully blind because it will likely kill a lot of cells. So it would have been better if we had done surgery earlier.

>>36971412
how so?

>>36971459
what's noscript?

Yeah, basically he told me that without the surgery I WILL go blind within a couple months, but the surgery MAY save some eyesight, so I should think about it at home, and I was like "Between low chances and no chances, what am I meant to think about? surgery please"

Anyway, let's start, I guess?
We were in the palace's public areas, in a tour with Asmund, Dawn, Honoria, and.. i don't remember who else... Zoe and Stella?

Blocking most stuff and unblocking what's important generally gets rid of a lot of clutter and keeps things safe, but apparently it doesn't like captcha too much. I've spent a good 3 hours or so wrestling with my computer just to figure out why I couldn't post on 4chan.

hey, i kept asking for surgery since day one but the doctor wanted to try and use eyedrops.
Well, its a young doctor, maybe fresh out of college so he may be afraid to operate? I dont know, but I kept and kept asking and he kept giving me eyedrops.

The faery bee shrinks down as fas as she can, and flies into the inner palace compound while we go back to our tour group.

Stella is sniffing at the air with a hungry look. Well, it has been a while since lunch time, and she may have caught a whiff of the palace kitchen's.

"Eldric, let's get some food?" ~she asks while hanging from our left arm.

"Ah, I'd like to eat something as well" ~says Dawn

Asmund asks the guide for a place to eat, and the man takes us to a close restaurant. Of course, being this close to the palace means it is an upper class place... it is rather fun to watch this world's not-china's decoration. It looks like a grab bag of asian cultures, but in a positive way.

Then again, chinese philosophy always was a grab bag of "we pick what we want from everyone else and leave the rest", anyway.

Meanwhile, Miel...

Shrinking down to about the size of a large beetle, the faery flies about into the palace, her wings making a soft humming noise as she flutters about.

She goes into the inner gardens and heads straight for the flowers... well, she's a bee, perhaps it can't be helped.

After enjoying the exotic flowers for a bit, she takes off towards the nearby building, flying over the heads of some government officials while they do paperwork busily.

They notice her, but beyond the "ugh, a bug" reaction as she goes by in and out of rooms, there's no big reaction. They don't get to take a good look at her, and she's just interested in making herself a mental map of the building, so she barely takes a look into every room right now.

"I can't read this" ~Zoe is struggling with the menu.

Well, even tho the western and eastern continents share the same language, with some minor differences, their written characters seems to be extremely different.

Stella has her tail and ears down, and she looks like she's about to whine as she struggles with the menu as well.

"What would you like? I'll look for something in the menu for you" ~says Asmund

Well, looks like the count can read western characters.

Meanwhile, in the palace, Miel is about done checking the eastern buildings, so she flies towards the northern ones... with a small detour towards the central gardens again.

"Ah! what is this?" ~one of the government officers notices her while taking a break from work.

Looking carefully, it notices that Miel has a class and job.

"Oh, thou are a visitor, then?" ~the old man seems quite interested, but as he approaches her, Miel stares at him for a few moments, then flies up and north.

The man watches her go, wondering if he should call security or not.

Stella and Zoe are enjoying the local cuisine far too much, digging into the tasty new flavors with gusto.

"Eat some vegetables t-- come think of it, Eldric, are your "sisters" able to eat vegetables?" ~asks Dawn before she continues

some thing has been bugging me tho since elli is 140 and elves work with a 10 to 1 ratio; for every 10 years alive it is equivalent to 1 year human time so she would be 14.

"It is fine, they eat everything at home."
"Alright. Girls, have some vegetables too, they're cooked different too, you may like them"

Zoe nods and gives it a try, while Stella watches her and keeps sniping at the meat.

"Stella, have some veggies too. Try them with the sauce"
"Okay..." ~she starts nibbling on the greens

~O~

Miel meanwhile is flying about the northern buildings. She finds the baths, the doctor's quarters, the armory... some of the lion beastmen notice her, and immediately head towards her. First to make sure it's not some wandering monster, and then to question her.

They don't take chances when it comes to the safety of the inner palace.

"Miss, do approach, please" ~they keep their weapons sheated for now
"Huh... ahmm... sorry?" ~she flies out the window

Shortly after a whistle is blown off, warning the rest of the guards.

As if from thin air, from around every corner, groups of armed lionmen begin popping up, cornering Miel until she leaves the building and heads up into the air again.

Well, time to go out and around.
Luckily the guards don't fly, no matter how disciplined they may be.

Going over the wall and around to go back in over the wall shakes them off nicely. Probably

Coming in again, this time into the southern buildings. it looks like this side of the palace complex is mostly empty.

There's a few ornate buildings, but they look quite comfortable, somehow.

Heading towards one in a literal beeline, Miel finds that these are the dormitories. As she enters through a window, she is suddenly stopped by a sword's blade right before her.

"Wh--!?"

Just the tip of the sword is visible, while the rest of the blade, and its wielder, remains in the shadows.

Miel gets the clear impression she's about to be stabbed, when Ami/Mai's face emerges from the shadows behind the sword.

"Who are you and what are you doing here? speak now and die"
"W-w-what? shouldn't it be speak now OR die!? i-is it you, Mai? Ami? wh-why are you already here?"

"...o-okay..." ~the faery says softly, and falls into the shadows custody

At about this time, Stella is happily wagging her tail after her meal, humming softly and swaying her feet as she rides the carriage back to the inn by our side.

The faery hasn't returned home yet. Perhaps it did get herself lost in this big, strange city?

"I will go have a bath before dinner. See you later" ~Asmund takes his leave for now.

"Eldric, I'll go visit the kitchen. Maybe they could cook up something else." ~Apparently Honoria fell in love with the local food. Stella tags along with her, wagging her tail

Zoe goes in to find Mako, looking for ear scratchings.

Going to our room, we find Lyann taking a nap in our bed, She looks like she came after having a bath, and is wearing a silk robe as she cuddles with an Eldric plushie.

"Lyann, what are you doing here, you have your own room" ~Eldric shakes her gently until the redhead sits up
"Was waiting for you. How did it go?"
"I asked Miel to take a look around. I was hoping she would be back already"
"Cant you just draw her back into your sword or crown or whatever? how does that work? she's part of your menagerie, right?"
"Uhmm..."

We try summoning Miel, and thankfully it works. She is called back into our crown and dissapears from the palace dungeons.

"Miel, are you alright?"
"Sire! y-yes! I got caught. Sorry!"
"What happened?"
"I think I wandered into the princess' private residence within the palace. Her shadows caught me at the window so I didin't got to see her. They were interested in news about Mako. I'm sorry"

So the shadows know that Mako is alive and here, is this a good or a bad thing?

"I believe we should gather some information about the current government, and send Mai to greet the locals."
"In that order?"
"Yes"
"Alright"

Lyann leans over and gives Eldric a very light smooch before going away.

"Just in case, don't take Mako along while snooping around. If things are bad, she may not want to hear about it" ~she says as she leaves the room
"Alright"

That night, Zoe comes by into our room, and casually kneels next to us and starts shaking us until we wake up.

Oh, right, it took her a few days to get used to the bathroom on the ship. She's the kind of person that has a hard time going anywhere but home, isin't she.

She finishes her business, washes her hand, and comes out of the bath, looking quite sleepy, and sort of adorable.

Even tho its a beauty in a half open shirt, all Eldric feels is warm feelings as she grabs his sleeve, and thenguides her back to her room.

"Thank you"
"You have to go on your own tomorrow"
"But I don't know it here."
"I can't go with you every time"
"Pwease?"
"Alright, just tomorrow, then you have to go alone"
"yay! I love you~"

Once Zoe is in her bed, and after a smooching her on the forehead, we go back to our room.

"Atroma, do you want to come out?" ~we ask our sword/dragon
"No, it's nice here."
"You can just be in the room"
"No, thankyou"
"Alright, but tomorrow you are joining us for breakfast"
"Do I have to?"
"Yes, you can't always be afraid of the open"
"...alright"

Eldric sighs, between the lion that needs his escort to go to the bathroom, and the dragon that doesn't wants to go ANYWHERE. his perception is getting skewered, isin't it?

Well, at least Mako is still cute and adorable. She hasn't become an action girl ready to punch people to rescue us. Yet

"Miel, do you want to sleep on top of a pillow, or are you alright on the crown?"

We go out with Asmund to check the rumours and the like. Well, it's not as if we can go to a tavern at 9am and hope for some drunkards, so we go to the local adventurer's guild.

"Why are we here?" ~Asmund seems only mildly interested
"Well, I hoped that looking at the requests people make from adventurers would help us see what they need"
"I see. That probably sounds good, but if they had problems with the government, would they be allowed to ask for her elsewhere?"
"Better than nothing"

We take a carriage towards the adventurer's guild, and find that the place is closed. It looks like it has been closed for a while, actually.

Asking an old lady that was sweeping the street, we learn that the adventurer's guild has been closed by imperial decree since a year ago, or so.

The Minister Regent said that, as an armed force unrelated to the government, and openly mercenary in its nature, the adventurers were not welcomed in the capital anymore. They can work elsewhere in the nation lands, but not in the capital.

Having left the old lady's company, we walk down the street for a bit.

"Well, so much for that. Still, you have to admit it makes some sense." ~says Asmund
"Its obviously a way to secure control" ~says Eldric while looking around, wondering what to do next
"Oh, of course it is. I am just saying it is not a lie. Having a small army of powerful mercenaries right within your walls is not something any government enjoys. Now what? go visit the edges of the city? the slums?"
"Why the city edges?"
"People coming from the countryside would probably settle there. It's a good place to hear about how things are going elsewhere without going ourselves"

"I could, but I got an extra pair of those linked notebooks, so I can talk with dad, grandpa and uncle wolfric any time. They know we are alright"
"Ah, that sounds fine"

The tall young man (vampire?) signals an empty carriage and we head for the city edges, where the newly arrived countryside folks settle down while finding their spot on the city.

Of course, it is full of city folks trying to rip them off as well, but that truly completes their introduction to city life.

The area is full of tents, the smell of cooking, and only a few guards here and there (not lion beastmen, just regular guards) keeping the peace among the immigrants.

"Now, where to start?" ~Asmund looks around after descending from the carriage.

We pay the driver and hop down as well.

"We should be very polite and try not to antagonize these folks. Doubtlessly they have had it rough if they decided to drop their roots and find a new home"
"I did not expect you to be the sensitive type"
"Hey, I lived in what most people would consider a horror story, I know about wanting to leave your home"

From what you hear, people is not allowed to freely leave their homes in the countryside, but once they arrive into the city, it is already too late. If the government began returning everyone to their homes, it would need the creation of a whole new branch of government.

The stories of the new arrivals most often refer to the way the local lords overtax the peasants, starving them in order to pay the taxes.

Well, it could be the local lords, or it could be that they too, have higher taxes to pay.

1/?

<- yeah, im thinking this look is properly lewd yet cutesy
>>
>>36974680

Other than problems with the taxes, most people seem to have come simply lured by their rumour and tale induced dreams of wealth in the capital.

It really looks like immigrants you could find anywhere, until you start noticing how many of them are injured.

Apparently, an important percentage of the immigrants left their homes because the soldiers were forcefully relocating them into new, state run farms, trying to "modernize" them, and developing unsettled lands.

Which usually means stepping into wilderness and areas where monsters strong enough to discourage previous settlers, live.

Well, it is an imperial decree to bring the whole of the land under the heavenly throne. A decree approved ty the Regent Minister.

"...ambitious, but a lot of people will die because of this" ~says Asmund, toughtfully
"Why does someone even need to move the peasants around so much?"
"Who knows? maybe its just as he said, and he is trying to develop new land."

Sounds a lot like what happened in Stalinist Russia with the State Run farms.

Lot of it really sounds like collecting more and more power directly into the hands of the Heavenly Throne and then being controlled by the Minister.

As they control more and more, easier to control/limit dissent.

Of course without adventurers out there, most peasants could not do anything to armed troops

You talk with the injured people. They have been attacked by monsters, bandits, and in the worse cases, by the troops that were meant to keep them safe.

A few of them are here for the open audiences the Heavenly Throne holds for the people, once every year.

For three days, the empress will meet with ordinary citizens to hear about their problems, and that annual event is just a week away. The problem is, the Minister Regent has announced that from now on, it takes 10 gold coins per person to meet with the empress, to diminish the numbers of assistants and prevent the miles-long lines that are well known as traditional on those days.

"Are you thinking what I am thinking?"
"That depends. Are you thinking about asking for an audience, or are you thinking about giving the money to a few delegations of villagers?"
"Those are... not bad ideas"

It is a general play in a lot of wold be communist dictators. Of course such controls even predate communism of course. Just a method of control.

Especially in an agrarian society.

To me a better way would be to encourage settlement of the land would be similar to the American Homestead act. Settle and then improve the land (Often just a home) and then you would be granted ownership of a certain amount of land. 160 acres in the American West.

Something like this would work better as only the adventurous would seek out the land and then they would be followed by others.

If there are mile long lines just to meet with the Empress it sounds like the government bureaucrat are seriously screwing up managing things.

>Help the villager's representatives meet with the young empress

Why not, they need to first select someone who understands what they want. 10 gold is a brutal amount to ask the poor to produce.

>Ask for an interview ourselves

Due to our wealth, I have no doubt we could clear the bribes needed to set up an interview otherwise too. Meeting her would likely throw everything for a loop.

Then again our levels would also end up throwing people into confusion too.

Well, we're back to our 5 standard posters, I guess? you guys had a nice xmas?

Well, if you have ONE festival a year when anyone can meet with the empress, I think that, considering the size of the empire, its not unreasonable for there to be huge lines

***
We talk to the villagers and ask them to decide on representatives, which we will finance so they can go before the Heavenly Throne.

After giving them enough for 200 different groups to meet with the empress, we sign up into the waiting list ourselves. The clerk tells us that our number in the waiting line is #304, so we will be among the first people to meet with the empress during the third day of the festival.

We are not allowed to carry weapons in the empress presence, and while we CAN check weapons at the entrance, he suggests we simply leave them home to prevent anything from going missing, considering the hundreds of people that will assist to the festival every day.

>Implying a kraken's cock isin't intimidating enough

(on second thought, dont octopii just spray semen on eggs? i dont have a clue)

We go back and meet with everyone...

Mako is in the garden, gently scratching Zoe's tummy as our lion(kitty?) sister lies on her back, wearing a small top and pants, leaving her tummy exposed for scratchings.

Zoe, you're not meant to purr... do lions even purr? *sigh* our lion and wolf sisters are way too mellow, aren't they?

We meet with Lyann, Okaba and Honoria to let them know how it went.

"What sort of clothes should we wear to this event?" ~ah, right, Okaba's one eccentricity that we know of. He HAS TO try the local fashions and food anywhere he goes, doesn't he?

Honestly, our demon prince bro is also too mellow, sometimes.

"Well, what are we doing, meanwhile?" ~asks Honoria.

Thankyou for being a practical person, Honoria.

"I was hoping Mai could get in touch with the local shadows and arrange to have a message delivered to Ren... her highness?"
"Uhmm... her highness is probably appropriate until she says so." ~Lyann tries to be helpful

Asking Mai, she seems agreeable, but a bit confused by our question.

Why are all the shadows alike? isin't the appearance of everyone unique to their role in life? we are the only us, so we look different from everyone else, but as far as they can tell, all the lionmen guards look alike.

*Facepalm* Come think about it, she's right. The lion beastmen in the palace did all look alike, didin't they? how come we didin't notice before?

also
1. octopi is a latin conjugation, but octopus isn't latin (and has never been in latin), its greek. So it would be octopedes not octupii
2. despite having a greek origin, the word has been fully assimilated into english, and as such would be conjugated the english way. Hence Octopuses

"No, it could be after lunch and some tea to digest it with"
"Ah, that's nice"
"I was joking, could you please go now?"
"But my princess likes it when we eat with her"

That's right. They are always around Mako when she's eating, aren't they?

"Alright, then please do go after lunch and a digestion-helping tea, please"

Mai nods. Is there something wrong with every one of our friends, somehow?

Stella and Zoe are gluttonous and cutesy to a fault.
Lyann insiste in calling us master to tease us. (this one may be our fault really)
Okaba keeps Aura waiting to start their life together, and basically obsesses over local fashion and cuisine wherever he goes.
Aura can't find the malehood
Dawn insists in playing pranks
Asmund is a fucking patricidal vampire

Alright, so, getting clothes for everyone, taking Mako along, which should fit in the everyone part, and trying to learn more about the guy's policies.

***

Thus, we take everyone shopping, including our kitty princess Mako (we are so asking Lyann for a plushie like this), to get new local clothes for the festival while Mai tries to contact the local shadows.

Of course, this means we have to wait a little until after Mako's after lunch nap.

The kitty princess has a very rigid schedule.

However, once she's up, we go along with everyone and go check the local stores.

There is nothing like massive markets of Eopolis here, but there are merchant districts, and we go into a high class shop to make the clerk very happy.

Buying clothes with two succubi its about as fun as you would think. In the end, Aura and Dawn go with light silk dresses that look like a hybrid kimono and china girl clothes, with a criss-crossed top completely exposing their shoulders and a generous amount of cleavage down to their bellybuttons, and a kamisk-like bottom.

The rest of the girls all dress much more conservatively, but look every bit as nive to look at. Honoria was going to buy a simple black dress, but when Mako comes out with the same dress, she decides to switch.

Well, its understandable, Mako just looks too cute, you know?

Zoe and Stella go with full, white and black outfits, tailor made for beastmen, so their tails have a tiny fold they can come out from without ruining their clothes.

We are still having fun by making Lyann try yet another dress, when Mai catches up to us.

How did she knew where we were? anyway, she says that the empress wants to meet with Mako as soon as possible. This very night, if we can manage, so she wants to meet with us on the inner palace gardens.

As Mako comes out of the dressing room again, she walks over and looks at the shadow for a moment.

"Hello. Who are you?"
"Second Princess, I am Mai"
"No, Mai is the prettiest" ~she immediately noticed, didin't she?
"..."
"But, I am Mai, too"
"I see, it is nice to meet you" ~well, Mako is completely relaxed around this strange shadow. She doesn't has any reasons not to be, after all.

She's been nothing but lovingly cared for by the shadows, after all. Perhaps it should not be at all surprising that she can tell the difference.

Much like how a parent can tell the difference between his/her twin children, after all.

From what this Mai says, the Regent can order them in his role as protector of the imperial family, but he is still under the females in the traditional matriarchy that is the Heavenly Empire, thus Mako or Ren can overrule him if they do so directly.

Once our Mai delivered her message, as we asked her to, the shadows delivered it to the Regent, as they had been told to.

The Regent instructed our Mai to stay back while he sent one of his own to us.

Well, she was... all of them, the shadows, were conditioned and trained their whole life to obey, so perhaps it shouldnt be that surprising, but, please Mai, don't get added into the lump of oddballs that make our team, alright?

Alright, so it is an ambush. Should we go? if the Regent brings the shadows with him, Mako can simply order them to arrest him.

What if he brings the lionmen imperial guards? what about them?

According to what this shadow says, they too, are only loyal to the imperial family.

Pretty obvious that the Minister considered any imperial family a threat, since they have direct control over much of the military.

The newer, stronger and a bit more confident Mako obviously is quite a big threat to him.
