You are Recette Lemongrass, and you are adorable.
You're so adorable that every single person in your hometown of Pensee always goes out of their way to help you out.
You're so goddamn adorable that even the local mafia boss, instead of selling your body for quick cash, decided to give you an item store to manage and a fairy to help you. And it's been going pretty swell. You've made friends with a bunch of adventurers who help you haul in rare and magical loot from the dungeons and you've also established a solid customer base that keep coming back for more. You really couldn't ask for a sweeter situation.

Except that it's before dawn in the middle of winter and for some unexplained reason, Tear has woken you up and got you sat behind the counter in the store while she busies herself in the next room. The wooden top is cold on your cheek but you just don't have the energy to raise your head off the table.

"Timer certainly does fly." She flutters into the room, interrupting your thoughts before you can really come to resent the situation.

"Mwueh?" You pull your head up off the counter to gaze blearily at the little fairy.

"The winter festivities have already begun in the town. Now correct me if I'm wrong, but I do believe it's human custom to exchange gifts with friends and colleagues. An odd practise if you ask me."

"Yeah, that's usuall- AAAH!" You jolt upright. "It's Saints' Feast today! I haven't got presents for anyone yet! I thought I still had time!" You leap to your feet, rushing over to the fluttering fairy. "TEAR! What do I do!?"
>>
>>36975008
She frowns. "Don't ask me, it's your festival. Could you not just perhaps grant them an item from our stock free of charge?"

"No way! That's really impersonal Tear! That won't do at all! No, we've got to go looking and pick out something just for them! Something from our stock could go to just anyone!"
She shrugs before fluttering back into the other room, ignoring your problems entirely.

>Maybe some of the stores are still open today! They might have something in stock!
>Nothing else for it. The Adventurer's Guild is definitely open. You'll just have to go Diving.
>It's too late now, there's no way you can get presents for anyone. You'll just have to think of something else.

You burst from your stool, filled with passion. "Well there's nothing else for it! I'll just have to go dungeon diving to find a good gift for everyone!"

"Recette." Tear's voice stops you before you've taken a single pace, her hand clutches the side of her head in exasperation. "You do realize that it's five in the morning, yes?"

"Wha-!? Then why am I awake?? Uwaa. No, never mind that. I still need to get those presents!"

"That may or may not be so, but the Guild doesn't open for another two hours yet. And besides, who on earth would you find to come to a dungeon with you in the middle of the festivities?"

Ah. You hadn't thought about that. No, it's fine. This works to your advantage! You have two hours until the Guild opens, which means two hours to find a companion and still be there early enough to find something for everyone before the traditional gift-giving takes place before the day's feast!

>Louie would definitely help you out! Though... you might need Alouette's help in finding him.
>You're sure Charme would love to spend Christmas morning with you. And she's always easy to locate.
>Caillou would... maybe help out? If you asked nicely enough.
>Elan is probably just wasting his time somewhere. You can probably rope him into this!

You're sure Charme would love to spend Christmas morning with you. And she's always easy to locate. Because if she's not by your side, she's almost always in the pub. And that's open all day every day. "I'll be back later!" you call over your shoulder to Tear, pulling on a jacket to fight against the chill wind that is likely tearing through the alleys outside in the frozen morning.

"Very well. Please be back before midday," she calls after you in a dismissive tone.
One step outside confirms your thoughts, a fierce wind tugging at your clothes. You steel yourself and turn to head down the road towards the inn, passing under the decorative candle lights lining the wide street as you go.

The view provided by being at the top of the hill lets you see the whole town from here, too. Every street is lined in much the same fashion, with every house sporting their own little lights in their windows. The fluffy tinsel effects do look lovely, but you'd hate to be responsible for cleaning this all up when it's all over.

You don't have long to marvel at the prettiness of the town, though, before you spot a group of rough-looking men ambling along the street up the hill towards you. They're definitely mafia, but the street lighting isn't helping you pick out the little details you've learnt over time to distinguish between Terme's men and his opponents. You can't tell if they're friend or foe!

>It'd be best not to draw attention. Walk on past them. Nice and calm now.
>They haven't noticed you yet. Try to slip into one of the side alleys and wait for them to pass.
>There's nothing for it. You'll just have to challenge them, and get ready to run if they're not friendly!

The best thing now would be to just walk on past them. Anything else would likely just draw attention to you. If you're lucky, they won't recognize you even if they are in a fit state to notice you. Which they're not, judging by the slurring made so obvious by the volume of their chatter.

You're a few paces past them before one of them turns to grab his friends' shoulders. "Hey, lads look! It's the little miss, Recette! Oi, Receeeette!"

Your heart, after initially skipping a beat at being noticed, eases instantly when you recognize the voice from one of your previous encounters. You vaguely remember Tear chastising this particular man for being a little... handsy with you in the past.

He seems okay now though, if a little (or a lot) inebriated. "Ah, good morning!" You pull your signature beaming smile as you greet the pack of men who are now granting you their undivided attention.

"You should be careful, miss! There's been some ruffians on the streets, lookin' for easy fights. Wouldn't want your day to be spoiled so soon! Might be worth waitin' until sun-up before going anywhere."

>Thank them for the warning, wish them a good day. You should hurry to the pub then before you meet anyone else on the streets.
>Well, you actually need to go somewhere urgently. You would really appreciate it if they'd walk with you though!

"Well, actually there's somewhere I need to go quite urgently. I'd really appreciate it if you'd walk with me though! It would make me feel much safer."

"Haha!" A grin splits his face as the other start to crowd around. "We'd love to, little miss! Where are you headed?"

"The pub," you tell them, "by the fountain. To meet a friend," you add quickly before they question why a minor would be heading to such an establishment at this time in the morning. It's certainly not for their drinks; you'd never be caught drinking that swill. Though their food is pretty good for its price.

"Alright sure, we can walk you there right lads?! Let's see the lady safe then we can head home! Haha!" The rest agree in unison, and together the dozen of you start the trek down the hill once more.

The night is still perfectly quite besides the sound of merriment from the direction you're headed, and the noise of your own escort. You're pretty sure you're going to make it all the way there without incident!

Until you walk into the clearing around the fountain. You can see the pub across from you. And right between you and it, another large group of suited rogues are waiting, talking merrily among themselves. They clock your group the same moment you clock theirs.
And in a flash, both groups are suddenly sporting a vast assortment of lethal-looking weapons, from clubs and chains to knives and even a mace. A small corner of your mind wonders where all these were being hidden, while the rest is screaming in terror at what is about to erupt with you right in the middle.

>Nothing to do with you! Time to get out of here!
>Good thing you also keep your shiv handy!

No! You can't let a fight happen now! Not like this, not because of you! You push your way to the front of your group, stepping out into the space between them and holding a hand out at both of them.
"STOOOP!" The growling, grunting and hype from the two groups dissipates, leaving two dozen heavily armed men glaring down at you, questioning your attempts to halt the approaching blood shed.

"It's Saints' Feast Day!" You turn your own glare at each of the men in turn, driving the point home as best as you can. You're not exactly the most intimidating person in existence, so you're not sure how well this is working. "No killing!"

The burly sailor-like man who looks to have no place in a suit from your own escort blinks a few times before directing a question back at you. "So beating, maiming and general chaos is alright then, miss?"

The apparent leader of the other group looks between his own cronies, sharing a look and a few muttered words. "Yeah, it'd suck for anyone to get shanked today." "I just got this thing dry cleaned and everything." "Feast Day spirit and all that?"
He looks to you again, with a solid nod. "You got it, then. Long as none o' yours go for kills, we won't either."

>"NO! No fighting either!"

You quickly scarper to one side of the fountain as the two groups charge in to meet on the other. You note a distinct lack of sharpened edges now, which you guess is a good sign. Though unfortunately most of the edged weapons were among Terme's men, meaning they're now suffering a distinct disadvantage in the ensuing brawl. When one of the unarmed men takes a length of pipe to the sternum and drops like a sack of potatoes, the tide quickly starts to turn with the slight but sudden change in numbers.

While most of the fighters are still taking it one on one, the poor buggers on the edges are now getting pulled into two or even three on ones as they're dropping quickly. They're giving just as good as they got though, it just seems like their opponents are rolling with the punches that much better. That, and their own punches are coming in the form of metal instead of flesh.

In short order, it's turned into a full wipe with your entire escort in various forms of dishevelment laid out across the open ground, though there are still a few of the other side in the heap as well.
For what you suspect will be the only time for the duration of this war, though, instead of the victors quickly setting about murdering the survivors and looted everything of value, both sides are cackling with hearty laughter. One of the reds gets pulled to his feet by a white, they clap each other on the shoulder.
"Good fight, man." "Haha, that was a heck of a punch. Thought you'd broken my jaw!"

The scene is repeated across the entire fountain. Someone shouts that he's buying a drink for the guy that managed to win a three-on-one, and suddenly in place of two dozen bloodthirsty men, there are two dozen laughing friends. The entire band amble back towards the pub without any more cajoling.

That went... well?

Shrugging the absurd event off, you follow the rowdy group into the establishment (whose surprised owner seems split between anxiety and relief at seeing both groups flood his space but not to cause trouble), and quickly set about the task of attracting Charme's attention. You signal the bar keep, and he nods before pulling a mug of beer for you, and placing it by the unoccupied stool beside you.

"Yoo, Reshette! Di'n' spect t'shee you 'ere!"
Charme slips onto the stool, grabbing the beer with one hand while her other wraps around your shoulders. "Come ta wish your ol' Sis Charme the sheas'ns greetin's? Mmm, or maybe I'm gettin' m'present early?"
A lecherous smile splits her features as she leans in towards your face.

Apologies for the delay. I got distracted by War Thunder.

"Uhh, about the presents..." Her face contorts into one of apprehension at your tone. "I've got some work for you, so there's no time for them just yet."

Her shoulders droop. "Y'di'n' get me 'nything?"

"I- I will! I promise! We just need to, sort of, go get it first. And I want you to come with me to do so!" Her face makes you feel like you just kicked a puppy.

"Shyo, now y'wan' me to help fin'a present... for myself, a'the las' moment 'cause you forgot'e get me 'nything?"

"No! It's not like that at all!" That's exactly how it is. "I just, uh. I really needed something doing this morning, and I wanted to spend time with you. I thought maybe if you helped me with that I could kill two birds."

Her face brightens instantly. "Aw, Reshette! Why di'n' ya say so?" She waves to the bar keep, who promptly hands her a glass of water. She necks it in one, shakes her head a little, then smiles happily at you. "C'mon, let's go then! What's the plan?"

"We've got a little bit of time before the Guild opens," you tell her. "So we might as well get some breakfast here first." Her face brightens at that.

"Ah! That sounds great, I'm gettin' pretty hungry actually. Oi," she waves to grab the landlord's attention; he's currently being overwhelmed by the mafia pack all trying to put in orders for drinks at the same time and it takes a few calls to get him. "We need some breakfast over here!"

He nods, "get yourself a seat, I'll send it over." And he's back to the suits. The two of you do as you're told, finding a table in the corner away from the rabble. Charme slips into the seat on the bench beside you, effectively trapping you in between her, the wall and the table. You make a note of the window being slightly ajar, before quickly suppressing the thought. Surely a simple breakfast wouldn't come to that.

"So you did get me a present, right? Ha ha, you wouldn't forget your best pal Charme on a day like today." You opt to say nothing on the matter, unwilling to break her positive opinion of you. "So what kinda business you got on Feast Day, anyway? I'd have thought the store would be closed until the turn of the year at least? Surely no-one will be buying until then."

>Blame Tear. She woke you up this morning. You're not even sure what she's doing back at the store.

She'll probably figure it out in short enough order once you get out there, so you guess you should just tell her the truth now. "I kind of sort of might have maybe... not realized what day it was. And I need to find presents for everyone."

A shadow of disappointment crosses her features. "Aw. So I really am being hired to pick out my own present from a dungeon, huh?" That is how it is, you stop trying to deny the truth. "Well it's an excuse to spend time with my favourite employer so who am I to complain!"
You swear, it's downright impossible to keep that mischievous grin off this girl's face.

Before you can continue this line of conversation further, the bar wench arrives with two plates of food. A selection of greasy friend meats, eggs,
Likely just the sort of thing needed to get Charme back into full form; though it's not really your sort of meal. You tuck in all the same, picking through the selection for the more easily digestible chunks even while Charme digs into the piled food in a strangely feminine fashion.

"That was good," she sighs contentedly. "Shall we get going then?" You agree, and the two of you quickly head out after throwing some coins over the bar to pay for the meal.

By the time the two of you make it across town to the Guild, the darkness has morphed into a pre-dawn light, the Sun just threatening to appear over the horizon within the hour. The Guild is already open when you arrive, with tinsel spread gratuitously over all the surfaces and many candles set about the place; though the clerk behind the desk seems to be in a somewhat less than festive mood himself.

"Joys of the day to you!" You crack a beaming smile his way, only to have it blown off with a grunt in response. You immediately switch to a saddened pout. "That's no good! You can't be miserable on a day like today!"

It's his turn to switch expressions, morphing into a moody glare aimed at you. "And who are you to say what I can or can't be today?

"I didn't mean it like that," you protest. "Only that it's not right for something to be getting you down! Is it maybe something we can help with?" Charme nudges you at this, giving you a look that clearly says she's not in the mood for helping a miserable clerk. Well she'll just have to put up with it!

He scoffs at your question. "Well it's dawn on Saints' Feast Day, and I'm stuck here bandying words with you and your filthy adventurer instead of being warm at home in bed with my wife. So unless you can bugger off and not be the cause for me having to keep the Guild open today, then no there's nothing you can do to help."

"Oh. Well, sorr-"
Charme cuts you off, "Don't apologize to him. He's just being a miserable berk for having an easy job that lets him live a comfortable life without ever having to risk his neck for an honest coin. Not having a day off is the worst thing he can think of to complain about."

The clerk jerks off his seat, standing to look Charme level in the eye. Ah! Why is everyone trying to start fights today!?

>Y-yeah, Charme's right. You were just trying to be nice! He could at least appreciate your thoughts!
>Calm down, Charme! No need to get angry over it, you didn't mean to cause any offence.
>Well, you can't do anything about that unfortunately. But you can definitely pick up a gift for him while you're out there and it'll totally make his day better!

"Charme!" You interject yourself between the two of them. "Calm down," you tell her in a lower tone. "I just wanted to be nice, don't start a fight over it." She colors slightly, turning her face away from yours.

"Right. Sorry." She steps back, her shoulders relaxing noticeably. Good, that's better.

"Sorry, mister. I didn't mean offense. But if you don't mind, we would like to head on into the dungeons now." He shrugs your apology away, quickly filling out some paperwork and demanding the upfront fee for taking Charme out. She, of course, gets less than her fair share of the cash but it's still more than most men would see for a week's work.

That done, he summons you on through to the portal. "So then, where are you headed?"

"The Amber Gardens, please!" A trip there might be a little more hazardous, but it'll give you better chances of finding trinkets that everyone will enjoy. The clerk nods, and without further ado opens the portal for you both to step through.

The two of you step out together onto the little islands floating in the endless lake. Understandably, you notice Charme looking apprehensively at the dark water. You don't really want to remember the shadows of what lurks down there either. Pushing those thoughts aside, you look ahead across the wooden bridge to the next island. Already, critters are appearing to block your path deeper into the area. A few eyebats are fluttering about, ready to hit Charme when she crosses into their range, and a walking suit of armor guards the open ground. Though none of them seem eager to cross to attack you here; a clear sign of the dungeon's intelligence, and its avoidance of attacking you before you can establish a foothold. It's kind of creepy when you think about it like that.

Charme busies herself readying her blades and checking all her pouches are secure and ready for whatever she needs. When she's done, she looks over to you. "What's the plan, then? Did you have something in mind or are we just poking about until we find something?"

Only exposure to the game and setting I have is through this quest, how do we get those rings? Because I don't trust Kaleun to keep the characters safe without them as insurance.
>>
>>36979670
You literally can't die in the game. Recette and Tear sit inside an invisibility bubble, supervising an adventurer. If they get badly hurt, they get dragged into the bubble and taken home, but leave all their loot behind.
>>
>>36979735
Well then thats very different to this seeing as IIRC Charme died or nearly died the last time we came here, that and Kaleun is always grimdark as fuck means I'm always paranoid he's going to kill off everyone next update without plans in place to deal with that.
>>
>>36979735
So how do we get those rings then?
>>
>>36979670
Well, it actually shouldn't be possible to get them this early on.

It makes more sense to buy(not fuse) healing rings, which have a chance to heal you when your health drops below a certain point.
>>
>>36979813
Pretty much random.

>>36979820
Rings a shit. Just flood your inventory with food, it's cheap, and you'll clear most of it by the end of the dungeon anyway.
>>
>>36979495
"I've got an idea of what to look for," you tell her. "But I think for now we're just going to have to work our way through the chests that are here. We'll play it safe and try to avoid monsters where we can."

The lady thief acknowledges your words with a nod, before steeling herself and rushing across the bridge. A hop and a dodge slip her under the guard of the knight awaiting her, and she neatly slices through its leg joint to bring it toppling over. She doesn't wait around to finish it off or attempt to loot it, however, as the two eyebats are already charging up to try to blast her. She ducks under the closest one before it can fire its beam and rushes for the clear space on the next island.

The invulnerability field of course means that following her takes significantly less effort as the critters completely ignore your presence, and you cross over both bridges to catch up to her just as she's closing on the first chest with a confident smile on her face. Her foot extends ahead of her as she prepares to kick the thing open. Then you notice the tiny symbol etched into the front of the chest.

Images of what are about to transpire flash through your mind, and you burst into motion, arms reaching out in a vain attempt to stop her, your voice leaving your throat too late to stop her. She glances up to you confused even as her boot connects with the lock, cracking the seal and the chest flies open.
You brace yourself against the explosion-

-which never comes. You open your eyes, looking around the clearing. Charme is appraising a bottle she's just pulled from the chest with a detailed eye. "Wow, look at this! This vintage is older than I am!"
She hands you a bottle of Scotch. It's not a very pretty label, but you recognize the name as a popular one. People pay a lot of money for stuff like this. "Takes me back," Charme hums thoughtfully. "I remember being given a tour 'round their distillery when I was a kid."

"Merry Feast Day, Charme!" You hold the bottle out towards her.

The beauty blinks. Then blinks again. The bottle remains hanging in the air between the two of you as she makes no motion to take it from you. She blinks again.
"Wait, you're serious!? Rece-"

"Take it," you order her.

"Recette no, this is too much! Do you have any idea how much this is worth!?"

"I've got an idea," you nod happily. "Merry Feast Day!"

Her hand reaches out unsteadily to take the bottle from you, tears forming in the corners of her eyes. "Y-you don't mind if I-?" You shake your head, and she uncorks the bottle, inhaling deeply before taking a light sip. "Aah. Tastes of home," she murmurs with a content smile. She corks it again, handing the bottle back.

"Would you mind? Holding onto it, I mean. Until it's safely out of here."

"Of course," you answer taking the bottle. She turns away, with a look you've never seen before and a new fire burning in her eyes.

From here, the island has two more bridges. One heads north, to where you can see a swarm of slimes ambling about guarding a chest at a dead end. It probably wouldn't be too much effort to get to the chest, but you definitely would have to fight through the slimes. To the west, the other bridge leads to a pair of gnolls blocking the path leading on towards the next level.

>Head north. The chests are definitely worth checking out.

You point out the chest to the north. "Can we stop by that one before we move on?" you ask.

Charme laughs. "This berk is yours to command, boss!" She rushes across the bridge and quickly hacks into the slimes, carving through the smaller ones on the edge of the pack without engaging the ones in the center. As she keeps this up, the pack thins out soon enough leaving only the larger, slower-hopping ones. It's fortunate that slimes are such aimless creatures without a King to lead them that such a tactic can work. They make absolutely no efforts to swarm Charme, instead just milling about waiting to be cut to shreds in her rapid hits.

In short enough order, she's finished clearing the way for you to move up and access the chest. You closely examine this one before letting her open it. As far as you can tell, it doesn't seem to have any telling marks or signs of it being a booby-trapped chest. But you can never be too sure with this place. It like to play mind games, or so it seems...

You give her the all-clear, and she kicks the chest open.

It pops open easily enough, and inside you find-

You blink to clear your vision, checking again. Nope, that really is what you saw. You look up to see Charme equally agape at the prize. It's the finest chocolate, wrapped in pure gold leaf. "Well," you breath, "I can think of one elf who would be over the moon to receive this."

Charme chokes on her own breath at your words. "And I can think of a lot of people who would pay ludicrous amounts for it."

You frown at your companion. "But that's not in the spirit of the season, Charme! That won't do at all. Besides, this means we're now two for two. How much more luck can you ask for?"

Charme chuckles at that. "It's almost like the dungeon is just handing you the things you were after, huh? Come on then, what's next?"

You both head back to the junction, facing off against the two gnolls. "They're not worth anything, Charme, let's just get past them."

"You got it," she acknowledges before exploding into motion and zipping between the two. She neatly dodges the swing from the first and completely ignores the thrown rock from the second that flies wildly off-target. You jog after her at a more gently pace, catching up to her only when she pauses before the next split in the paths. To your right, the portal to the next level is clearly etched on the ground. To the left, a floating ball of molten rock seems to be lying in wait for you to try exploring the rest of this level.
"What do you think?" Charme asks when you catch up. "Next level usually has better loot, right? But it'll be harder to get to the chests, too. Might be worth checking out that way too."

Well the first rule of the dungeon is to explore all of it! Of course, the second is to not overstay your welcome, but the first comes first! "Let's check out that way first," you say. Once more, Charme zips past the critters she doesn't need to fight, this time being the floating rock that barely has time to register her movement before she's already past it. The next one has a pair of the tentacle monsters that try to sprint after her, but Charme being Charme, she neatly cuts off the tentacles that almost reach her and she sprints on past them without slowing down, leaving you in the dust. You hurry after her as best you can.

You cross two more bridges in your rush after her, barely keeping up with the de-tentacled monsters, let alone Charme, until she suddenly comes barrelling back the other way.
"Uhh Recetter, what do we do now!?"

You manage a "huh?" before the space behind her is filled with five more of the tentacled beings. Uh oh. This might be an issue.

"We're only here for the chests, Charme! Draw them over here to the open and try to slip past them."
She grunts in response, apparently not best pleased at your suggestion but complies anyway. She barely manages to scrape between the first two, now converging on her as she makes it back onto the open ground of the island you're on. Waiting a bare handful of heartbeats, all five of the creatures surge onto the island, intent on catching Charme in their reaching grasp.

She side-steps to the left around one, leaps to the right between two more, then charges through the gap between the last two. She's almost out and clear when one of the tentacles drags across her upper arm eliciting a scream from your adventurer. She still doesn't slow down though, turning her pain into energy and crashing through the gap to freedom. A hard sprint later, she's cleared enough space between her and the tentacles that all five of them slow to a halt, their prey having escaped their immediate attention.
You catch up to her checking over her own wound on the next deserted island. "Nothing serious," she reassures you through a grimace before you've even had the chance to voice your concern. Then she nods at the next clearing, where a new chest sits waiting for you.

When you examine this one, however, you note the little run that you've come to associate with the higher chance of the chest being booby trapped. Still, these types also usually come with the chance of valuable loot. You steal a glance up at Charme, who's trying to check out the sting on her arm a little more without you noticing.

Oh hey, it's Kaleun. I haven't seen you since you went all ayy lmao with loli stalker.

Frankly I'm surprised you're still alive, thought your lab would have exploded or been swallowed up by the earth at this rate.

Merry Christmas, or whatever you celebrate.

-nothing happens. You let loose a breath you didn't even realize you were holding, as does Charme. Inside the chest, a pair of brown knitted woollen gloves with a simple pattern on the back of the hands. Alright, you're going to admit that somehow you were expecting something more valuable, after the last two chests. But you can't really expect every chest to be giving you a small fortune. And you're pretty sure you had a vague thought towards getting some warm clothes for someone. Maybe the dungeon really IS just handing you all those things you spent a fleeting moment thinking about on your arrival here. You'll need to remember that little fact for the future.

>These would make a good gift for Elan, you guess. You'll keep them for now.
>You could pick up gloves like these anywhere. No, you'll hold out and see if you can't find him something better.

With that sorted, the two of you head back towards the portal to the next level. With all five tentacles in one place, Charme finds it much easier to coral them into position for her to dive through the gaps in their attempts to block the passage and head back to the first island from the junction. She pauses at the bridge though, and you quickly notice why.
"The rock isn't here," you comment. She nods, an uneasy expression on her face.

>Maybe it wandered off? You should rush through before it has a chance to come back!
>You don't like this. It might be hiding or something. Best cross this one slow.

"Maybe it wandered off?" You voice the thought aloud. Quick, let's get out of here before it comes back!" You head across the bridge onto the island first, crossing the ground quickly. Charme is following a few paces behind you, staying close but leaving just enough room for you to effectively scout for her with your invulnerability field. You can't see it anywhere, so maybe it really did just move on to a different island?

You haven't even finished thinking the thought before the floor underneath you shifts, as the rock bursts through the loose earth, already white-hot and ready to set off its explosive trap!

Right behind you, Charme is still mid-stride. She hasn't spotted it! She's not going to get out of the way in time!

>Shout a warning. Tell her to get clear!
>Push her out the way!
>Throw yourself onto it to shield her from the blast! This kills the Recette.

Her life is more important than our chastity!

Good morning, Senpai. Tired yet?
>>
>>36982770
Without even thinking about it, you dive back, hands outstretched to push her out of the way. She twists as if to evade your headlong tackle, but there was never a chance she'd make it in time. You crash into her and flatten her into the dirt with the weight of your own body as the explosion tears through the air above and behind you.

You're momentarily deafened by the sudden cacophony, but after a few moments the ringing subsides and all you hear is a meek complaint from Charme beneath you.
"Ow. That hurt."

"Oh no, Charme! Are you okay!?" You quickly look her over head to toe, searching for any injuries. She seems just fine, apart from being winded from your tackle. Right, of course. Because the moment you hit her, she was dragged inside the invulnerability field as well. Good. That's good.

"You know I'd have made the distance just fine if you'd just given me a quick heads up," she grumbles up at you. "Mmm. Not that I'm complaining." A by-now familiar glimmer fills her eyes.

You suddenly realize just how close your face is to hers, and promptly pull yourself back to your feet. She follows a little more slowly. "Sh-shall we carry on then?"

"Hah, of course." She takes the lead now, crossing the final bridge and heading over to the glowing blue of the portal.

The next level is again a familiar one now, the suspended wooden walkways and platforms high in the trees. And once more, you find yourself desperately trying to not think about what is below you.

"What's the plan for this one, Recette? The monsters are harder here, but the loot should be better."

>Same plan. You're here for the chests only, don't get greedy now.
>There might be something worth looting. Take everything that isn't nailed down!
>You've got enough for one trip already, just focus on finding the exit.

"Getting greedy doesn't help us," you tell her in no uncertain terms. "Let's stick to the plan and find all the chests. Let's try to stay out of fighting stuff we don't need to."

Charme voices her agreement before the two of you set off along the rope bridges. The first few platforms are easy going, with a few creatures appearing here and there that don't even threaten to slow you down. Charme simply sidesteps around them all and blows through to the rest of the level.
Soon enough you've cleared the entire level and found only a single chest right by the portal out. "Well, we can't be lucky every time," Charme comments as she moves to open it.

Very subtle ones yes, ones that you mainly perceive subconsciously which can start seriously affecting your spatial awareness, once you mentally get over that you should be good until about 70 hours (well still sane though drained and concentration is very heavily impaired), then the big hallucinations start, and around 96-100 hours if when you start to lose your grasp on reality.

The lid of the chest seems to throw itself open without Charme even needing to put effort into the kick, an almost heavenly light shimmering from within. In the midst of the glow, a bracelet adorned with white-feathered wings hangs in the air, calling out for you to take it. The moment you do, the shimmering glow dissipates and you're left with a simple decorative band. Still, it's a very pretty piece. You voice your thanks to the air of the dungeon for granting you such excellent gifts in your hour of need, before gesturing to Charme that it's time to move to the next level.

Instead of up, however, the portal casts you down. Deep down, back to the oceanic floor of this realm. You find yourself on a small island, maybe a score or so paces across at its widest. On all sides, the island is surrounded by a foreboding water and the sky is an impenetrable darkness.

Suddenly, a by-now all-too-familiar tingly sensation courses through your body, the ghost writing appearing to give you some idea of the trial to come. That same heavy electro track booms from the darkness on all sides.
[ELECTROJELLY]
[~THE WANDERING JELLYFISH~]
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cg1iV7cPllI

The gigantic blue jellyfish floats peacefully down to the middle of the tiny island, it's long, trailing tentacles reaching out as if to seek its prey. Charme barely manages to evade its casual movement sweeping inches from her face.

>Think up a strategy to help her!
>>
>>36983844
fuq
err, well it's electric, so ranged attacks should be a priority (but i'm not sure if she can do that)
>>
>>36983844
>non-meta

Focus on evading its attacks first to figure out the weaknesses in its defense.
>>
>>36983844
>>36983875
This, keep on the move and dodging to stay safe, figure out its ranges of movement and then exploit them, see if it has any blindspots where Charme can get away from its tentacles, or at least slice them up with minimal danger to herself.
>>
>>36983844
With every jump over the tentacles, slash the round, not-stingy, body. Assuming Charme still knows her specials, only hit the tentacles with shadow clones.

I'm pretty sure the jelly is quite predictable, but then it can probably do a grabbing attack of some sort. Maybe we can throw sand and other air particulates to irritate its skin?

Non-meta enough for you all?
>>
>>36983892
>Non-meta enough for you all?
wut, I have no idea about the source material of this quest, but anything that sounds sensible or well thought out helps
>>
>>36983900
I just feel responsible for mentioning the meta stuff to begin with.
>>
>>36983844
You quickly set to shouting out your ever-useful advice. "Avoid its tentacles, Charme!"

She quips back, "that was the plan!"

"Try to go for the body, it's probably vulnerable there!" The slow rotation of the jelly's main body sweeps its tentacles across a wide area, with just enough speed that Charme actually does find herself spending a significant amount of focus on getting out of the way, dodging this way and that to avoid the feelers trying to locate her. One of them sweeps a little too close for comfort, leaving her diving into a roll underneath it, a short static charge jumping out from it to her clothing. That seems to set off a reaction in the jelly, its main consciousness now pinpointing the current location of Charme.

A huge electrical discharge suddenly leaps out to strike the ground where she'd been prone just a heartbeat before, and at the same moment the tentacle sweeps back in a grasping motion. Thankfully, she's already gained enough distance from it to easily avoid the pinpoint attack. You notice that the tentacle makes no hasty motion to return to its resting position, even after failing to grasp its prey. Perhaps... that's the opening Charme would need to strike at the body proper?

>Try to avoid getting anywhere near those feelers, hit it while it's in the middle of its sweeps!
>Let it almost find her again! When it makes itself vulnerable, hit it with everything!

"Don't even get close to those feelers, Charme!"

"Plan still hasn't changed!"

"It's using them to find you so it can hit you with a big attack! Avoid them and hit its body!" She responds by attempting what you suggest, a double-step bringing her around one of the tentacles and within a short dash's distance of the main floating body itself. She darts in, both blades coming up to bite deep. The creature recoils, both tentacles tensing up for a fraction of a second before the entire body cracks into a hard spin that sends the hardened tentacles crashing into Charme, which in turn sends her flying across the island.

She barely manages to catch herself before flying off the edge of the plateau into the deep water. Heaving herself back onto her feet, she spits out a goblet of blood. "Ugh, bit my tongue. Guess that annoyed it, huh?"

>That seemed to do some good! Try it again, but pull back faster this time!

"That looked like it did some good," you call out to her. "Do the same again! But roll under it when it spins like the first time! I have an idea!"

She acknowledges before moving quickly in to strike again. As she's circling, you prepare your desperate plan to give her even the tiniest increase in her chances to succeed. When she goes in for another strike, you're ready.

The moment her blow hits home, the tentacles once more tense up and prepare to spin. But you're a step ahead. Charme's throwing herself to the floor as you're throwing your bait. The material that hits is instantly vaporized by a sudden electrical burst, causing you a mix of despair at the sudden loss and some relief that you didn't throw something more valuable. It does the job, with the static discharge jumping into Charme's back being less than the blast to the fabric. The monster lunches with all its might focussed on destroying the non-existent target. Revealing itself entirely to Charme.

"It's confused," you yell out. "HIT IT WITH EVERYTHING!"

"RIGHT!"

Charme seems to phase out of the visible spectrum as she launches into an all-out attack against the soft underbelly. Her arms are a blur as hit after hit after hit shred into the giant creature. It shudders with every rending blow digging deeper and deeper into its vitals, tentacles flailing helplessly in every direction but the one that would be useful to it. After what could be barely a handful of seconds since the blitz started, Charme hits something major, the flesh being rent clearly changing in consistency to something less jelly. As suddenly as it started, it's over. The thing ceases all movement and slowly, peacefully, collapses down to the ground. All signs of life gone.

As the Go Home door materializes in the center of the island, Charme breathes a deep sigh, all remaining strength leaving her body as she drops to her knees.

You rush to her side, dropping down carefully beside her. "Are you okay, Charme!?"

She looks to you with a weak grin. "Ha ha. That was a tough one. What was that you threw at the end there? The thing that distracted it? It got zapped before I saw it."

"Tha- oh, don't worry about it."

Her eyes narrow as she searches your face, "was it something important?"

"N-not as important as you, Charme," you deflect the question in such a way that her cheeks flush and she drops the line of questioning. "Come on, let's get home. It'll be time for the feast if we keep messing around like this!"
You pull her back to her feet and help her cross to the Go Home door. It swings open with a gentle push, granting passage back to the Adventurer's Guild. You both head back, spending as little time as possible interacting with the clerk as possible before being allowed to pass back into town. Thankfully, he didn't count any of your loot items as magical enough to warrant confiscation.
Which may well be an oversight on his part, since all of them feel pretty magical even to you. Either he's not doing his job properly, or just maybe... he let them through on purpose as a show of festive spirit?

Whatever the case, you and Charme find yourselves back on the snow-slick streets of Pensee. You let out a slight gasp as a firm wind snaps and bites at the tail of your skirt.
"Hmm? You alright?" Charme glances over at your outburst.

"Y-yeah," you answer quickly with a giggle. "Just cold, that's all."

"Anyway, uh...

>Thanks for the help today, Charme! I'll see you later?" Best head back to the store and find out what Tear's been up to.
>Are you up to anything else now? I still have a few presents to find."
>It was fun! Merry Feast Day!" You can try to find the other gifts on your own.

>Are you up to anything else now? I still have a few presents to find."

Capitalism never rests!
>>
>>36984796

what presents do we have now?
>>
>>36984796
>Ask if Charme would like to share a glass with the clerk
>SHOPPING

Sure!

Now now, anon.
That's for the party with friends,
(or should I say: *after* the party~)
>>
>>36984926
Tear will scold her if she finds out recette lost her panties.
How are you going to explain that to tear?
We need new panties.
>>
>>36984952
How is she going to find out? Is Tear actively keeping track of our undergarments?
>>
>>36985025
Well anon, remember we DO owe lots of dosh. And panties ARE an asset.
>>
>>36985065
>And panties ARE an asset.
An asset I'm sure Charme would be eager to repossess. Better make sure we don't get indebted to her!
>>
>>36984796
"...are you up to anything else now? I still have a few presents to find."

Charme shrugs, "sure. What else do you need to find?"

You hum, running over the list to check you haven't forgotten anyone. "I think we need to find something for Caillou, Louie and Alouette. Oh, and then of course Euria and Tear, we can't forget them!"

"Right, well I guess you've made some progress at least. Got any ideas for what you want to get for them? That might help us to start. There's probably a few stores still open that we could try our luck with, but only if we know what we're looking for."

>?
>>
>>36985412
We should get some couple-shit for Louie and Alouette. Maybe a reagent of some kind for Caillou? Not sure about the other two...
>>
>>36985412
>>36985412

What about Nagi? She needs a pair of sturdy shoes!

Euria gets a delicious pie.

Not sure about Tear, what does she like other than jewing?
>>
>>36985412
guess we can follow this guy's ideas: >>36979612
>>
>>36985412
Get one of those super-long couple scarves for Louie and Alouette.

A loud bell chime for Nagi(so we can find her more easily)

A desk lamp for Caillou.

A full outfit for Tier. Kimono? Tuxedo?

Euria and the Guildmaster get food, no question.
>>
>>36985412
Euria could like a big, warm coat with secret pockets, and Tear may have us for office supplies at her size.
>>
>>36985430
Maybe a looong scarf for the two of them? And we can look for some kind of clothing for Euria/Tear as well.
>>
>>36985519
>Tier
*Tear

...that wasn't even autocorrect, I typed that out myself.
>>
I'm with this guy
>>36985506
Just follow what >>36979612 said.
Also buy yourself some panties. It's not healthy for a little girl to walk around without panties during this season.
>>
>>36985519
Kimoxedo.
>>
We should give a mercenary calendar to Alouette's fairy
>>
>>36985715
>mercenary calendar
the "full of naked guys" kind, right?
>>
>>36985715
No presents for that tight bitch.
>>
>>36985461
>What about Nagi?
Nagi has a bracelet.
>>36985506
Still short on gift ideas for Alouette, Euria and Tear.
>>
>>36985790
I stand by my original suggestion. Euria gets a pie, or several pies, doesn't matter as long as it's pie. If you vote against pie for Euria, you're literally worse than Hitler.

Tear gets a complete list of inventory, sales, and acquisitions made within the last week, to cross reference with her own. She'll have a great time.
>>
>>36985790
a potted plant for Tear, maybe?
fairies like plants, no?
>>
>>36985790
Some kind of clothing for Euria maybe. Clearly the scarf is a Louie+Alouette couple-gift.
>>
>>36985821

Maybe we could get her a faerie-sized tea set.
>>
>>36985790
What's wrong with the kimono/tuxedo?

So are we voting a scarf for the love-birds, and clothing for your two house-mates?
>>
>>36985925
I'm down for that at least. Wouldn't mind pie for Euria but clothes are fine too.
>>
>>36985925
seems like it.
>>
whelp, it's 2am over here. Not sure how much longer I can hang on.
>>
>>36986324
I'm in a similar boat. I'm fine for being awake. But my attempts at writing are lasting at most 30 seconds at a time before I get distracted for 5+ minutes. We're up to 300 characters towards the next post.
>>
>>36986406
You can do it!
>>
>>36986406
believe in myself who believes in you

or something like that
