RULES AND STATS: http://pastebin.com/SeV4Mmqv

"So, what the heck are you having us do this time?" You ask as you lounge back in your chair."

You had just come off a raid against a base controlled by the One Belka terrorist organization. While the attack was successful, it was going to take some time for the investigators to sort things out, especially after all the damage the attack caused. However, you did find that the supposedly sealed tunnel connecting North Osea and Belka was back in operation, something that did not sit well with Osea, further straining relations between the two former enemies.

Well, you'll leave that up to the politicians to figure out. Right now, you had a new mission to worry about.

"All right." Samantha says. "Today's mission is being carried out courtesy of the Dupont Foundation. And yes, this is the same Dupont you're all thinking about."

You all turn to Lilian, who just smiles and shrugs.

"What can I say, my family has always been rather philanthropic."

"Right." Samantha nods. "Anyways, we'll be escorting an international aid convoy to Kasna."

"Kasna?" You frown. You don't recall hearing about a country by that name.

"Kasna is a small island nation located between the Usean and Yuktobanian continents." Samantha explains further. "Actually, it shares the island with another nation, Biala, which is where the root of the problem lies."

The map then zooms in on a rather large island, which is further separated by red and blue colors denoting the territory controlled by both nations.

"Both nations have been at a constant state of conflict for the past decade or so. Thanks to international pressure, they've set aside a small demilitarized zone between their borders to accommodate refugees, but lately, with relations souring, they've been blockading aid shipments to the DMZ. As a result, the Dupont Foundation and number of nations have decided to send in a convoy with an armed escort."

"Will we be having any support?" Lara asks. "Not that we need it..."

"Alpha Flight will be accompanying you, as well as a couple flights from other PMCs." Samantha explains. "You will be escorting a flight of four cargo planes through both nations' self declared no-fly zones. Now, unlike the last few missions, you WILL be operating under rules of engagement. That means you don't fire unless fired upon, and only when you have a positive ID on the enemy. We're already risking an international incident with this aid delivery, so let's not make things worse, okay?"

"AWWWWWW." You hear Lara and Amy groan loudly.

"Suck it up." Samantha grunts. "If Bial or Kasna do decide to start a fight, you'll likely be dealing with heavy air and naval resistance, so arm yourselves accordingly. Oh, and one more thing. Weather conditions are expected to be cold and snowy, so be sure to keep an eye out for that."

Snow? Wonderful.

"So, any further questions?" Samantha asks.

Everybody shakes their heads.

"Good. Get your planes ready to take off in two hours. Dismissed." She says.

As you exit the briefing room, you wonder what to do next. Well, you now had a big fat stack of 20,500 credits, which should be more than enough to grab something from Quint's shop.

"Ah, back to buy something?" Quint grins as you enter, his feet on the counter.

"Thanks." You say, pocketing the receipt.

"Will you be purchasing anything else?"

You then exit Quint's shop and head straight over to the hangar, trying to ignore just how chilly it had gotten all of a sudden.

"We'll go with the 4AAMs." You say. "Expecting a target rich environment today."

"Gotcha. We'll load them up right away!"

A few hours later, you're in the air and just about to rendezvous with the air convoy.

"So, you think the Kasnans and Bialans would be dumb enough to pick a fight with us?" Amy asks.

"I hope they are. I'd hate for this to be a milk run." Lara says.

"Now now, I'd much prefer we get through this without doing any fighting at all." Lilian sighs. "We ARE escorting precious cargo, after all."

"I'm with Lilian. I'd prefer not to fight at all." You say.

"Boooooring." You can visualize Lara rolling her eyes.

"Heads up. I believe we're about to rendezvous with the convoy." Lilian warns.

Sure enough, you see four massive contacts appear on your radar. You look down to see four C-17 cargo planes emerge from the clouds, flying in a loose formation. Immediately, your IFF system tags them on your HUD as RUDOLPH, DASHER, VIXEN, and COMET.

"This is Rudolph. I assume you are our escorts?" The lead plane asks.

"That's right! Bravo Team from Artemis!" Lara says cheerfully.

"Don't forget Alpha." You hear Wolf's cocksure voice as his F-22 drops down from above. "Don't leave us out of the party!"

"Loki here, providing AWACS support." Loki announces. "It appears the other two teams that are assisting us have been delayed due to bad weather."

"That's unfortunate." Rudolph grunts. "We're pretty loaded down and it's going to be a long trip. Even with tankers, we'll be pushing our range limit."

"But I don't think we'd want to be going with half an escort." Lilian warns.

"Aw, we can take care of it!" Lara insists.

"Fine, fine." Lara acquiesces.

"Well, not like we're going anywhere without our escort." Rudolph agrees.

So your hodgepodge flight orbits the rendezvous point for about another ten minutes before Loki speaks up.

"Contacts on radar." He says.

"I'm picking up four contacts. Friendly IFF signals." Loki says. "Looks like some our latecomers have finally arrived."

You check your radar to see a new tag called BUTTERFLY TEAM. Soon enough, they come into visual range and you can see that their flight consisted of four Nosferatu fighters. Pretty high end shit, there.

"Ugh, hate those things." You hear Lara grumble. "Went up against one of those during the Liberation of Gracemeria and it was a NIGHTMARE."

"Now, now. Just because they're flying an Estovakian plane doesn't mean they're Estovakian themselves." Lilian advises.

"Butterflies reporting for duty!" You hear what sounds to be a criminally young voice announce.

Magnet is the ship killer, the others are air dominance, we're mutirole, and getting ASMs would hobble our efforts against other planes, especially when we're expecting large numbers and UGMs do minimal damage
>>
>>36977790

You forget we're running on Ace Combat Logic. Where we hold effectively unlimited missiles on a plane and where A-10s can shoot down planes with its gun.
>>
>>36977783
Right, i realize that after i hit post button.
I'll go for Pierce then.

And for the question... that'll up to Boss Merc i think. Maybe he'll make us to complete sidequest to unlock that.
>>
>>36977813
Yes we have lots of missiles, but we can't spam lots of UGMs at lots of targets in a short amount of time, they are individual lock weapons, good for a single opponent, not when we're outnumbered in a furball, thats where 4AAM and QAAMs come into effect
>>
>>36977813
UGMs also work perfectly well on ships so theres no reason to get them at the detriment of our AtA abilities
>>
>>36977817
We'll damn, we'd better start aiming for a triple-S rank (or nearest Ace Combat equivalent) then.
>>
>>36977836

We'd only need one against a single ship and its long, stand off range. We can drop the ships easily before they even come into range and fuck up our airspace with AtA fire.

>>36977847

They do but they need a flight path over the target and we'd definitely take hits from AA fire. Standoff range weapons would just take them out. Whats more, we're also in a flight with great AtA capabilities in Lara and Lilian. A slight tradeoff in lesser AtA to bolster our AtG would not be amiss.

>>
>>36977885
>they need a flight path over the target
UGMs are missiles not bombs...

>Whats more, we're also in a flight with great AtA capabilities in Lara and Lilian.
Except they have their own planes, chasing their own targets, they are not us, nor do we use their weapons, relying on them to cover for a deliberate weakness is folly.
>>
>>36977910
Anon, you are my brother. I too want the F-16XL
>>
>>36977937
I'd like to get it, but it means a massive chunk of money that isn't put towards a better airframe, which might hold 2 specials by default, and missing out on buying better specials.

Unless the next tier of airframes we can potentially buy are only comparable to the upgraded -16XL, then its currently not worth it to upgrade our current plane instead of buying a completely new and better one.

I'll have my Widow yet
>>
>>36977962

I dunno. I don't think base planes would have come with twin special weapons by default.

I see that we might be forced to buy planes before we see if they can carry twin specials.
>>
>>36977985
>I see that we might be forced to buy planes before we see if they can carry twin specials.
That would suck. I wouldn't want to waste 25+k on a plane and then find out its useless and we have to spend another 15+k just to carry a second special when the plane is already pretty high tier.
>>
>>36977985
That reminds me Merc, why don't you include the plane's stats in the shoplist? It would be nice to know what each plane is capable of.

"Wait, what stories?" You say calmly, trying to hide your panic.

"Heh, the stories that whatever mission you're on, you just utterly turn things around in your favor, no matter the odds." Revenant says with a bit of admiration. "Kind of like a bunch of wildcards."

"I see..." You frown.

"And it's not like Stripes here didn't already have a bit of a rep, and Solo Wing Valkyrie seems to be a popular name being thrown around, too."

"Ahehehe, yeah..." You laugh nervously. Were you really getting that popular?

"All right, everybody, focus." Loki calls out. "We're reaching the self-declared no fly zone. We're going have to make a call here. Either we go through Kasnan airspace, Bialan airspace, or run right between them."

"What's the difference?" You say.

"Kasna has a more sophisticated air defense system. However, much of their air force is newly bought, so they're not quite experienced with it and there's not a lot of planes at their disposal. The Bialans have older airframes, but they have a lot of them and they're a lot more experienced in using them. If we try to fly in between their airspaces, we can hope that they'll be more concerned fighting each other than us, but we do run the risk of both of them deciding to shoot us down first."

"Lovely." You sigh.

"I'm all for it." Wolf says.

"Heh, guess that's my job." Revenant chuckles. You see his engines flare as he picks up speed and pulls ahead of the main group. "Let's see how good their early warning is."

You continue on your present course for a few more minutes.

"Warning, incoming contacts. They look like Kasnan fighters." Loki warns.

Indeed, you can see a flight of four F-15s vectoring in on an intercept course on Revenant while another flight of eight were vectoring towards the main group.

"Attention, unidentified aircraft." One of the F-15s begins broadcasting. "You are entering Kasnan airspace. Identify yourselves."

"We are an international aid convoy delivering relief supplies to the DMZ." Loki replies. "We are not here to fight and we will not initiate hostilities, but we WILL defend ourselves if attacked."

The F-15s slow down, no doubt reporting back to their superiors the situation. However, it doesn't take long before they respond.

"There is a high possibility you may be smuggling supplies to Biala. We demand that you immediately reverse course and leave our airspace, or we WILL shoot you down."

"This doesn't look good." Lilian mutters.

"I think we should take them out now." Lara grunts.

"Loki, can you stall them?" You ask.

"I'll try." Loki grumbles. "Hey, Kasnan Fighter, what's your callsign?"

"Jumper One."

"Jumper One, do you really want to do this? You may have top of the line fighters, but so do we, and our pilots are ready and willing to fight. Are you and pilots prepared to die for nothing?"

"Orders are orders. We're here to stop you from progressing any further."

"Come on, you idiot, THINK! If we were going to smuggle supplies to Biala, why would be flying through YOUR airspace to do it?!"

You see the F-15s on your scopes slow down as they hesitate. Meanwhile, you see a whole mess of new contacts pop up from the Bialan side of the border.

"Loki? Looks like we've got some more party guests."

"I see them. MiG-23s. At least two dozen."

You check your screen again and see that pretty much all of them are homing in on the main group. Looks like they haven't spotted Revenant.

"Kasnan fighters, you will immediately leave our airspace." Yet ANOTHER voice speaks.

"Go away, Bialan scum!" Jumper One growls. "This is a Kasnan matter!"

"Our airspace, our concern!" Jumper One's Bialan counterpart retorts. "This is OUR airspace!"

Oh boy, the tension in the air was thick enough to kill an engine. You feel that just about anything could pop this powder keg.

Also, will we get paid more for shooting down Kasnan fighters or Bialans?

"I think this is a good time for us to go." You say.

"Good idea." Loki agrees.

With that, the group picks up speed as they speed up while the Kasnans and Bialans continue to bicker and posture. Surprisingly enough, it seems they've completely forgotten about you and your whole group manages to get away unmolested.

"Camp Sanctuary, this is Santa's Sleigh. We're inbound. Are we clear to land?" You hear Rudolph broadcast.

"Santa Sleigh, this is Camp Sanctuary. You are clear to land. Be warned, we are in the middle of inclement weather."

"Noted. We're heading in." Rudolph says.

You grumble as snow begins accumulating on your canopy as you circle around. It takes a while, but all four cargo planes manage to touch down. Finally, with the scopes clear, your fighters also begin to land one by one.

As your planes are refueled, you're glad that's all that needs to be done with your plane. The airfield, if you could call it one, was not very well equipped. Not surprising, since the place was a refugee camp and not a military base. Resources of course would be thin. You shiver as you step out of your cockpit, and your boots crunch on fresh snow.

"Come on! Come on!" You hear a loadmaster yell as the supplies are carted out of the cargo planes. "Let's get this shit unloaded ASAP! We've got a blizzard coming in!"

You then go to link up with your squadron, who are hanging out a temporary tent with Wolf and the rest of Alpha. It was marginally warmer in there, but there was hot coffee, which was a HUGE help in this environment.

"So, guess we managed to get through without a fight." You say.

"I know. Sucks, doesn't it." Lara sighs.

"Definitely." Wolf agrees as he fist bumps her.

"Well, I'm glad. None of us were hurt." Lilian says happily.

"Well, not much to do while we wait for them to refuel our birds and offload the cargo." Amy shrugs. "Any ideas on what to do?"

"Sure, looks fun." You say as you sit down and one of them immediately hands you a mug of hot chocolate. Sitting in this tent was oddly... what was the word? Cozy. Really really cozy.

Your first instinct is to report this right away to anybody who would listen. However, just the way those girls LOOK at you, with those big puppy eyes, eventually convinces you to change your mind.

"Don't worry, your secret is safe with me." You sigh. "Just... why?"

"Well.... it's gonna sound stupid." Dawn laughs nervously.

"We're fighter pilots. We jump into aluminum deathtraps and to shoot missiles as guns at other people like us. We're ALL stupid." You assure her.

"What we mean to say," Echo takes over with a stoic look on her face. She almost reminds you of a younger version of yourself, "is that it's our one true desire. You see, we're all actually orphans."

"Is that true?" You turn to the twins, and they just nod somberly.

"You don't know what it's like to be in one!" Thunder wails.

"You just feel so powerless and alone." Lightning adds.

"And then, we saw the documentaries. Started hearing the stories." Dawn comes back into the conversation. "Mobius 1, The Demon Lord, Scarface 1, Garuda, Yellow 13, and more! People that changed the world! That everybody knows and respects! Maybe if we could become fighter pilots, we could be great aces like them!"

The other three girls nod.

"So when Atlas came and asked us if we wanted to enroll, we took the chance." Echo explains.

Something about these girls. About how earnestly they wanted to fly, tugged at something in your heart. Maybe it was because they reminded you of when you were a young, idealistic nugget. Maybe it was some kind of maternal instinct that came with age. Either way, you wanted to see these girls make it.

You didn't want them to suffer like you did.

"You realize this is a dangerous line of work, right?" You say with a warning tone.

"Of course." Echo nods calmly. "We were already informed of a high chance of death or injury."

"And we joined up anyways!" Thunder and Lightning chime.

"All right." You shake your head and smile. "How about this. Stick close to me and my squad and we'll make sure we all get out of this, okay?"

"Okay!" All four girls affirm.

"And here." You hand them your card. "Whenever you got free time, youc an always do a few sim battles against me. How does that sound?"

"Thank you!" The girls squeal as they group hug you.

Must...maintain...Belkan... stoicism!

---

"Oh dear, what happened to you?" Lilian gasps when she sees you in a disheveled state. "It looks like you got mauled by a bear!"

"Make that four little bears." You sigh. "What are you doing out here?"

"Well, we noticed you were missing so I went out to try and find you." Lilian smiles. "Should we head back?"

"Well, I want to meet this Revenant guy first. Wanna tag along?" You ask.

"I'd love to!" Lilian smiles.

The both of you head a little further down the flight line, where you see Revenant and his second crewman.

"Hey there." You wave.

"Oho, so it's the Valkyrie herself." Revenant grins. "What brings you here?"

"Well, I'd like to at least meet my fellow pilots in person when I can." You shrug. "Your copilot?"

"Yeah, you can call her Merlin." He nods.

"H-hi." She squeaks.

Goddamn, another young one.

"Oh my, she's quite young, isn't she?" Lilian blinks.

"Heh, everybody says. that." Revenant chuckles. "But she's just as much a pilot as you or me. That's why I keep her in the backseat, till she's old enough and picks up enough experience to fly a bird herself."

"Is she your daughter or something?" You ask.

That causes Revenant to sputter.

"N-no!" He shakes his head rapidly.

"Younger sister?" Lilian moves in to back you up. "You two seem to be close!"

"Um, something like that." Revenant grunts.

"W-we're just friends!" Merlin insists.

Heh. Cute.

"Anyways, that's a pretty neat plane. Where did you get a bird like that? I figured only a PMC or military could get their hands on a Wyvern."

"Now THAT is a long story." Revenant laughs.

Suddenly, the base intercom blares.

"ALL PILOTS, PLEASE REPORT TO THE COMMAND TOWER IMMEDIATELY. THIS IS NOT A DRILL."

"Looks like duty calls." Revenant grins.

"It f-feels like this always h-happens when you talk to a p-pretty woman." Merlin says.

"I know, doesn't it?"

You all sprint over the airfield's control tower, where the other pilots have gathered. There, you see Samantha on a large screen, no doubt video conferencing with you.

"Hey there, everyone. Glad to see you're all in one piece!" Samantha smiles. "Now, I got a bit of good news and bad news. The good news is that the Kasnan and Bialan armed forces have decided not to attack the camp to prevent an international response."

You get the feeling that the bad news was worse, though.

"The bad news is that the Kasnans and Bialans have declared a temporary truce, declaring you a hostile third party and giving an ultimatum that you turn yourselves over in the next 24 hours. You may be safe in the camp for now, but you're going to have to fight your way out."

"Of course." You sigh.

"Sweet!" Lara grins.

"Here's the latest feed from Loki." Samantha points to a map behind her. "It seems like both sides are putting up constant air patrols. Two from Biala and one from Kasna. Now, you've got two options."

The screen then shifts again, now showing doppler radar readings of the weather.

"We've got a huge blizzard incoming. If you want to beat it, you have to take off now, but you'll be fighting the Kasnans and Bialans at their full strength. Your alternative is to wait for the blizzard to hit, then try to slip out in the middle of the storm. At the very least, the Kasnans and Bialans won't be able to bring their full forces to bear."

"But won't that be extremely dangerous?" Revenant grunts. "I'm pretty sure some of us haven't had much experience flying in bad weather conditions."

You see his gaze fall upon the Butterflies, who now fully clad in their flightsuits, which helped hide their age, though you have a suspicion that he suspects what you know as fact.

"That's up for you all to the decide." Samantha sighs. "In light of this, ROE is lifted so you are free to engage. Just remember you still have to escort the cargo planes out."

"Got it." You nod and turn to the other pilots. "So, what's the plan?"

After much discussion, you all eventually agree that flying out to beat the blizzard is your best course of action. Considering the kind of firepower your combined wing was packing, you'd all be better off in a head on fight rather than trying to be cute with a blizzard.

With that, the order comes out to have all planes ready to take off as soon as possible.

"So this really is going to be it, is it? An actual dogfight?" Dawn asks you. You can hear her voice is tinged with anxiousness.

"That's right." You say. "It's going to be the real thing. Just stick close to my team and remember your training, and we're gonna get through this, okay?"

"Okay!" Dawn says, her confidence restored just a bit.

"All right, all planes sound off!" Loki barks.

"Alpha Team standing by." Wolf says.

"Bravo Team standing by." Lara announces.

"Butterfly Team standing by." Dawn says.

"Revenant standing by."

"Santa Sleigh standing by." Rudolph says.

>>36981957
I guess that's true, but the perks seem to be rather specific to what the plane goes through.

Look at Pixy's Eagle, its unique ability was because he managed to land the damn thing with only one wing.

So, depending on what the plane experiences, it determines its special perk. Hypothetically, we could get a starter plane with an awesome perk, but is very situational.
>>

We can always stick to our Falcon and upgrade it for multirole mission and buy something better for air-to-air mission.
>>
Whatever happen to the blackbird we confiscated?
>>
>>36982003
thats why its a legendary plane we wont be able to get our hands on again.
>>
>>36982038
We got a bonus to our wallets and I assume the company still has it.
>>

Possibly chillin in some secure location, with the pilot teaching Not!Powers.
>>

well we have a F-15 that was runed specifically for pixy. maybe this becomes our custom variant? i expect they'll be upgrades after the XL. The vidta honestly is the waste since if its better capabilities, we should be getting other planes while the XL brings unique capabilities.

Then why the fuck did we get a perk instead of just staying in the air by way of QM fiat?
The fact that it's a PERK, and not just a one-time thing, implies that it can be used in the future.

I'm surprised no one has done that to our female squadron yet?

Will Karla will them of pose?

I am of knowings the great KAMINA, comrade.

It was never said, hence the accusations of intoxication.

My memory might be a bit fuzzy, but I think he died when he was killed.
>>
>>36982309
