"Howdy!" the stranger says, carrying himself like he's the most important person in the world.
Even the way he talks is making your blood boil.

You are Jack Albator, talented freebooter, brave hero, and occasional private detective. You're not in the best of moods today. First you learned that the castle, YOUR castle, was broken into by a mysterious thief. Then, suddenly, a mysterious stranger shows up at the shrine? All of this is too much of a coincidence for you to write off as not being related.

All you have to do is turn him upside-down and douse his head in the stream for a few minutes, and he'll tell you everything you know.

No, no, no, wait. You've dealt with far more annoying people. Some of them were even crew on your ship. Except those people were typically dragged behind the boat if they decided to be uppity with everyone. You can deal with a pompous stranger who thinks he's king of the world with his funny leather hat.

Maybe you're overreacting, or maybe you're just being cautious. It's hard to tell the two apart, especially when your enemy hides himself.

"Aye" you reply, in the friendliest manner you can muster on such short notice.

"Jack Albator, yerself?"

He shuffles the toe of his boot in the dirt.
"'Cody', that's what everyone else calls me."

"Aye." you say with a bit of disdain leaking into your voice. "What brings ye all the way out here?"
"Oh, nothing much." He's still shuffling his toe, avoiding direct eye contact. "I heard you were a very special man Jack. I felt it only proper that I come and see if you were for myself. "

>"If ye have business with me, I'd prefer if we not discuss it so close to the shrine and other people."
>"Nothin' special with me, just a drunk sailor living at a shrine."
>"Aye, I guess you could call me special. What is it to ye?"
>Cut the crap, accuse him of being the thief.
>Question him about the break-ins
>Other?

Yo, Announcer. One player down on Eastern Standard Time. Christmas has been hectic and I need sleep for work. Hopefully you've got enough players to keep going.

I'm still here, still writing

I see jack's madness is progressing apace.

Finally caught a thread near the start.

"So ye think I'm 'Special', eh? Sorry Cody, I don't swing that way."
He buckles over laughing like that was the funniest thing he had ever heard.

You and Atsuko look at each other blankly. Atsuko's face conveys the look of the first time someone has met an insane person. Further amplified by her slowly backing her mount away from the man.

He stops laughing, bit by bi. His face contorts to appear more serious and mature. Which isn't very hard to do considering that he has to be at least more than a few years older than you are.

"Ya' have quite a sense of humor, Jack. But I know you are aware of what I'm talkin' about."

"Aye, I do. What is it to ye?"

He scratches the dirt with the toe of his boot. "Well. You see, I've been traveling the land, searching for others like myself. There really aren't that many good rivals around, y'know? And a man needs someone to keep him on his toes."

He moves his coat out of the way, revealing a six-shot pistol. Much like the one you've been carrying around.
"So how 'bout it. Both of us, six shots each. It's not like either of us can get hurt, right?"

You smile, shifting your posture some.
"Argh, Cody, was that it? Ye should know somethin' bout me. I don't have rivals, I have corpses."

That's when your hand darts toward the wheel-pistol situated at your hip. Quickly, you grasp your fingers around the familiar feeling of the cold pistol grip and pull it from your holster.
The man, who is clearly no stranger to someone trying to pull a gun on him, has already drawn his pistol without you even seeing his hand.

What you have in the surprise element, he easily matches in speed. His gun has practically glided from his holster in one smooth movement while your movement is slower.

The combination of surprise and speed cause both of you to level your pistols at one another at the same time. Quickly, you slam your palm onto the hammer as each bolt leaves the barrel of your pistol. From the way he's moving his elbow. He's doing the same.

Explosion after explosion of sound and chaos erupt from both of your pieces. Atsuko's bird quickly leaps several feet into the air as it nearly throws her off. Bullets made of an unseen force whistle and crack past your ears as you feel several of them make contact with your chest.

The smoke clears, and silence falls over the makeshift battlefield. Both the stranger and you stare each other down, waiting for the moment the victor is decided.

The sound of fabric ripping slowly becomes more and more audible as both of us sneer at one another. Slowly, both of our outfits start to rip and tear as the battle damage makes itself known in the only way this strange world can convey.

And when it's over, his outfit is nearly in tatters while yours is unkept and ripped. Looks like you win this duel.

The man spins his gun in his hand and holsters it, before breaking out into another fit of laughter.

Atsuko on the other hand, dismounts and storms over to you. Swiftly, she grabs your ear and starts ranting at you for scaring her bird without warning.

>Cont.
>>
>>36979632
"Good show, Jack. Good show."
He reaches into his pocket, pulling out a similar scroll you saw Fritelli use to create your barrier jacket. He says something in a whisper as his outfit is nearly re-made with still some obvious marks of battle damage.

You'd love to say something, but Atsuko isn't exactly letting you off easy for your surprise draw. She harshly tugs and pulls at your earlobes as she rants about your rude and unexpected challenge.

"It's good to know this world has skilled men."

>"Ye didn't explain what it meant to you. Why are you tracking down other heroes?"
>"Yar, sure. Lass, can you lay off for a minute?"
>"Ye seen what ye wanted, now leave."
>Talk with him some more. He seems like an interesting guy.

You twirl your pistol before setting it back in the holster.
Whether the guy meant to pick a fight or not, you have to admit that it was an intense duel that you enjoyed every second of.

At least, the second that the whole duel lasted.

He smiles and walks over, prompting Atsuko to ease off your ear. The man extends his hand out to shake.
"Jack, great duel."
"Aye, Likewise. Ye didn't come all this way just for a half-second duel, did ye?"

"No. No you caught me, Jack. Instead, I wanted to meet the person you're contracted with."

"Ye mean, the person who summoned me?" You glance over at Atsuko, who isn't even paying attention to the conversation at the moment.
"That's right, I just want to be sure you're staying near your summoner."

You look at Atsuko, who stares back with an equally confused face.
"What's it to ye, Cody?"

He scratches his chin, looking over to Atsuko.
"To put it simply, Jack. There's a scoundrel on the loose. Your castle was broken into last night?"
"Yar. I heard."

"So was mine, Jack. The difference is: I know who did it."

He looks around, almost as if he's worried of someone listening in on your conversation.
"Ye do?"
"Mm hmm."
"Then who did it?"

Smiling, he looks back at Atsuko and nods.
"Another hero, Jack. A rogue hero, someone whose summoner and mission isn't known."

Something to you doesn't seem right about that.
"Sounds like ye fit that description too, Cody."
"And until a few minutes ago, so did you."
Fair point.

"So, Cody. What're ye gonna do next?"
"Back to town, I suppose. With you, that makes three heroes I've met face-to-face out of six total. There's two holed up in the castle I wanted to talk to as well."

"Yer not gonna shoot them, are ye?"

He laughs, "I hope so! That little duel we had was the most fun I've had since I got here."

That doesn't really put you at ease.

Thanks again everyone for the thread, apologies for the short thread again.

Something I didn't mention last thread: I got a new job. What this means: I can only run after work when I start the job. Which may push back start times. We'll see how it changes things when we get there.

Thanks again everyone for the thread, feel free to tell me what you thought.

Same here. I didn't expect today to go the way it did.

I wish I had started earlier and had less distractions for more storyposts.

This 1 hour per storypost thing isn't how I like it, that's caused by me getting distracted while I'm trying to write. Some of it is necessary, some of it isn't.

If it were up to me I would have storyposts every 15-20 minutes. Which I could probably do if this time of the year wasn't so busy.

i get it life does what it wants when it wants.
