Your hive swarms with new children, and your throne room fills with eggs. The first of your new harvesters come to life with throbs of energy as static crackles between the ground and their hover pads. They depart for the shores of Leeland to begin their harvest. Workers carve out endless caverns of bioluminescent plants and your tiny but burdening air force takes to the sky for their first patrol. The air has become cool in recent days, and you have noticed a decrease in local activity. The short and intense summer of Leeland is over, and as the planet drifts further from its star in its odd orbit the far longer winter slowly begins.

Welcome back to Hive Queen Quest!

Finished research

>Rapid nano-assembly
Advanced construction techniques utilizing nanomachine filled paste to bond materials together on a molecular level allows for the construction of ships and buildings at a much more rapid pace.

[Nano-manufactory – While your workers are capable of efficiently providing for any and all labor you require, construction is still dependent on the growing of tools and the shaping of small components normally created within vats or shaped by workers. By employing large amounts of biomechanical nanomachines held within large centralized vats, this limitation can be removed and construction projects rapidly accelerated. Passively reduces time of all surface construction to a minimum of 1 day, depending on worker availability.]

Medical nanomachines
Uses injectable nanomachines to assist in healing wounds or performing surgery, reducing the time required for medical procedures and allowing for far more advanced medical care in the field.

[Smart-blood transfusions – Medical procedure times no longer accumulate with multiple procedures for non-hive life, and instead use the longest time]

[Bio-salve – The biological interface can now administer a regenerative salve capable of disinfecting and healing minor wounds, as well as stabilizing more serious wounds]

>Skyl controller chip
This small chip in the Skyl skull is all that remains of the complex network of nanomachine based medical systems. The device itself works in a similar capacity to your own parasites, but offers the controller extensive control over rapidly reprogrammable nanomachines capable of a wide range of tasks.

New research unlocked

>Smart Mines
Medium
Replacing digger drones with programmable seeds of nanomachines allows the hive to effectively create metal trees. The nanomachines spread roots through the ground to locate ore veins, break them down and assemble them on the surface as metallic fruit-like bulbs for workers to gather.

>Liquid metal sculpting
Medium
By using nanomachines to maintain metal in a liquid form regardless of temperatures and without diluting it with chemicals, you can improve the quality of the Hive’s metallurgy, decreasing the time it takes your workers to perform metal intensive work in cramped spaces and dramatically boosting ship construction times.

>Carbon nanostructure construction
Medium
By using the ancient Raligha ship as a basis, and new construction techniques, you can implement more sturdy nanotubes and carbon based diamond filaments to slightly improve the stability and durability of your ships without impeding maneuverability or increasing cost.

>Cellular acceleration
Medium
By using advanced medical technologies to assist and boost the cellular metabolism of an organism, clones can be made to develop much faster than normal.

Yes, parasites can administer it to heal wounds. It essentially just gives the bio-interface mandibles a new use outside of the niche use it has now for parasites, and functions similar to how the construction mandibles work with rock, only with flesh instead.
>>
>>37027615
>he biological interface can now administer a regenerative salve capable of disinfecting and healing minor wounds, as well as stabilizing more serious wounds
Makes it sound like our parasites can only heal internal wounds now(which i believe they could already do to a lesser degree).

Lyle leans back in his seat and watches as the massive space city of Long Island slowly grows before him. It spins gradually on its axis with its solar array outstretched. Even at this distance the massive freighters can be seen like ants against it as they move to and from the busy docking rings.

As the Angel drifts into Long Island space and communicates with its control tower, you look over the rest of your hive. Your first pod was just recently finished and has blinked away to the FG-883 system, and even at its great distance on the edge of the system your pod's delicate sensors can detect an increase in local activity. There is something in space resting just on the outer edge of the planet's orbit. Your pod cloaks and begins to drift inward for a better view.

Meanwhile, within your hive proper the comatose bodies of the twins and Coil sit in their tanks. Your study of Ceph and Tidaren biology was extensive, and you have gained a wealth of data from them, and about them. You were somewhat surprised to find Coil to be at a ripe age of over 200, and the twin's memories are a garbled mess of chaotic and haphazardly planned events, like a twenty year car crash. In a lone pod rests the deceased head of Seiner, covered in probing arms and sensors working to preserve and analyze the contents of his mind. It is in surprisingly good condition.

You gaze into the memories contained within Seiner's brain. There is a lot to sort through. Countless research studies, experiments, surveys, research papers. The man had lived for over a century, with numerous artificial organ transplants keeping him alive.

You peel back the memories further and further. He was a child near the end of the Colony Wars, and his father was a high ranking member of the local government. His grandfather, however, was a leading scientist of the Confederation, and was one of the many who died in the attack on Earth. The memory is clear in his mind, the same conversation you found recorded on his data device, but there is something more to it, something the recording didn't seem to pick up.

As the child Seiner ends the call with the press of a button, his head begins to ache.

With his brain silent and dead, you do not receive the same feedback as the mind of a live individual. His memory is like a slideshow, flashing from major event to major event.

Seiner sits on the floor as his father reads over an intelligence report. The image of the Earth's moon cracking to pieces can be seen on the screen.
"My god." His father says under his breath. He closes the report. For some reason the young Seiner can still picture the image of the moon as it cascades in chunks to the surface of Earth. He can visualize the evacuation efforts as ships ferrey civilians from the surface, and he can sense a small chunk of the facility where his grandfather had worked as it fell to Earth inside of the larger chunks.

His father wakes him up with a worried look. Adam is on his back with a headache as a doctor flashes a light in his eyes.

"Do you know where you are?" He says.

"My house." Says Adam, but as he says it he can see the fluorescent lights of the local hospital above him. The doctor speaks with his father in the hall, saying something about a seizure.

"Does your family have a history of epilepsy?" The doctor asks.
Adam isn't sure what that means, but it sounds bad. They speak for a while before the doctor hands him a slip of paper and some medicine.

You see his life flash by. The image of Earth never quite leaving his thoughts. You see the endless spires of Mentan's grand cities, and the sprawl of the urban slums below as Seiner looks down from the window of his dorm room. The white halls smell of cleaning fluid and everything seems to glow an eggshell white. He scours the libraries dayly, their cavernous halls of digital and physical media alike seem endless, with what seems like entire city districts dedicated to every subject imaginable, except Earth.

An automated expedition, that is the promise from his friends in power, but only after the project is finished.

A sharp sting stops the rapid pace of memories flowing by, and you see Elizabeth storm out of the room. She yells something but Seiner doesn't know what. Some dialect of Arnimean.
"It will be worth it in the end. I'm sure of it." He thinks, but in the end there is no expedition.

At least several years blur together in a drunken haze from an apartment on Gemini. The sound of a train passing feet from the window shakes the room, and the sirens of police seem to be endless. You take note of the apartment, a small hovel not far from the capital.

Eventually there is an announcement. New colonies ripe for the taking in the Expanse region. Uncharted, unknown, and rich with new opportunities. He makes several calls, and calls in the last few favors he has.

You watch as once again he climbs the ladder of political influence, earning favors and grant money for all manner of projects. Few are willing to deal with him, but Killinger, for one reason or another, offers to help.

With his status in the Union's research division granted back, Seiner feels a ray of hope return. It has been many years, and only now does he feel any closer to his dream. At the time he had no idea what the reports of his father meant, but as he aged he remembered the images clearly and recognized what was stricken from the public records. The moon was never struck with a weapon, it fired one. It nearly obliterated the approaching fleet, and as it annihilated ship after ship it detonated.

Your samples are largely intact, although there is extensive degradation.

[New research available]

>Photosynthetic cells
Fast
By implementing the same cells used in many of the local foliage in infrastructure, you can create stations and buildings that produce energy via solar radiation to produce energy in a manner more safe and stable than fusion, although less efficient.

>Genesis Project
Medium
By studying the practices and techniques on top of the dedicated technologies of the Gardener's hive, you can develop a method that can be used to rapidly spread foliage and life on a planet with to develop a new biosphere. The process is time and resource intensive at the start, but with the use of weather spires the biosphere quickly takes root and becomes self-sufficient.

[New adaptations unlocked]

Rotary wings - What appears to be a set of wings based on the local life, these wings spin on a pair of counter rotating rotaries. They are too bulky to be mounted on a standard drone without causing dangerous instability in flight, but with aerodynamic drones it allows for improved thrust, allowing for double the carrying capacity when used with a Honey pot, although it sacrifices in speed.

Barkskin carapace - Less a research project and more an item of interest, this carapace uses densely packed layers of bone and dead plant-like cells to create a layer of protective armor comparable to a combat carapace without the use of metals. The process can be applied to ships as well, and appeared to be the main source of construction material and metal substitute to fuel the Gardener's efforts. What it gains in metal efficiency it loses in upkeep efficiency, leading to expensive and high maintenance units, although with the rich and lush nature of the Gardener's worlds, that issue never became a problem, and she had always considered the natural and plant-like appearance to be worth the additional cost in the name of beauty, a stance your mother clearly never shared. With your abundance of metals the carapace is rendered obsolete, but the appearance can be mimicked through the peacock carapace.

As your thinkers relay the findings to you you finish your own study of Seiner's mind. Youn find a wealth of confidential codes and data, but with it comes the knowledge that such codes are changed on a regular basis, or are exclusive to Seiner, who is assumed dead by the Union. However, you do find the knowledge of the locations of a number of military research facilities, as well as a somewhat limited understanding of their objectives, although even Seiner was not privy to much of it.

Several research sites reportedly focused on understanding the technology of the Void Cutters, as well as the Ceph themselves are scattered across Union space, with at least a half a dozen located on Tadega or Mentan. Others include weapons research centers and experimental shipyards, as well as a number of dedicated facilities for scanning and removing computer security breaches caused by Theseus, as well as manually performing the duties once given to Theseus before he had escaped.

You call on Theseus and he responds promptly. You send a synopsis of the data for review.

"Yes, this data would be most beneficial." He relays the data to Zero One and it sends its reply. "And the requested price is reasonable."

[Quantum Communications boosted, will finish next day]

"Your intelligence efforts are highly impressive, even to the greater Unity." He says. Your pod detects a server ship breaking off from orbit as it fills with cruisers. It folds space soon after and vanishes from view.

A system wide alert fills Virgo and local defense forces quickly assemble. Your pod detects a server ship drifting on the edge of the system, and with a burst of energy it fires its main gun at what you now recognize as one of the cyber security facilities you had just sold the location of. The server ship vanishes as the local forces burn out to attack. Nearly an hour later the security lab detonates with a multi megaton blast as a ferrus slug impacts it at a small percentage of light speed.

"I will not ask for details of how you obtain these kernels of information, although I can only assume it had something to do with the incident on Tadega." The Clarke returns to its patrol pattern in Leeland's orbit, slowly accommodating the monitor satellite.

Unity knew a slugging space battle was too much a pain in the ass, so it just accelerated a slug to near C, and pointed said slug at the lab.
Due to math, this means the slug impacted with the force of a nuclear bomb/orbital bombardment, and probably destroyed the lab totally.

Due to Hive construction methods, however, we are VERY hardened against such attacks.

Most scifi would have ships close into the planet and bombard it, giving local defense forces time to react.
Here, Theseus calculates the planet's trajectory shoots a railgun slug at a good percentage of the speed of light at the estimated location of the facility a few hours later. It can't be avoided and this brings little risk to Unity's ships

I was talking about the ask page, i beleive we got C.
>They are split down the simple designations of A, B, C, and D class relays. Ds are cheap and slow, and can transmit or receive text at a rate of 1 character per second. They cannot transmit or receive pictures or other media, and can only either transmit or receive, not both. Cs can handle live text chat, or send or receive images or sound with painfully slow speeds. Bs can handle video with sound rather quickly, but can still only transmit or receive, and As are restricted on the open market, and require a license to operate. They can handle live, 2 way video chat, but are far, far too expensive to be useful as anything but vanity projects for the super wealthy. Most military ships have either B or C class relays, while typical consumers will usually either have a D, or C class, with the C class being considered something only purchased if you intend to use it for work, or are a tech obsessed geek.
Each one comes with two, which are built linked to each other. This means that if you want to use it, you need to give one of them to either the person you intend to talk to, or to a relay network service provider, which lets you avoid being nickel and dimed with the rental fees. In your case I assume you intend on breaking it apart and figuring out how it works, so that bit won't really matter much.

>>37031519

I was being very generous with the time frame on purpose, because the reality is several thousand times more terrifying than the alternative.

I mean seriously, less than a year from supping at Fungus-Blessed Red Water to SURVIVE to being one of the "Big Boys" of the immediate space with some of the most advanced technology, certainly the most advanced biotechnology.

And we basically had to either reverse-engineer everything or go from scratch, even our FTL was scrounged from the pod.

"Don't worry, the human is in need of a navigator, and you say you are highly skilled. Humans will not often deny a skilled individual."

The mechanical puppet appears in the hall as a humanoid shape, but it makes no pretense at being human. The large viewscreen on its face shifts through various colors and patterns in the Ceph language, and a speaker on the front offers the ability to speak in the myriad of human dialects and languages, although this one is only programmed to interpret Esperanto, the most widely spoken trade language. The speakers remain silent as it speaks to coil.

"Humans are reactionary, are they not? This was a well known and well taught lesson." Coil says as the two walk down the hallway, or at least the puppet walks, while Coil floats. The Valen smuggler is still aboard his ship, somewhere within the vast tanks of water built in the command deck. A massive waterlock connects from the bow to a deck further up for Valen, but they would likely not even fit in the corridors of the merchant deck. Coil thinks he would be more comfortable on the upper decks, but he was denied access on several occasions.

"Be sure of yourself. Humans are territorial and aggressive by instinct, but it is only a show to test each other. It helps them assemble a social order and hierarchy. Show your skills and he will accept you."

Coil is unsure of himself, but as they continue down the hallway the port comes into site. The Hel's Angel sits outside the window below the loading bay, and a rather frightening human stands at the airlock. He looks to Coil as the puppet drops the cargo to the floor. "This it?" He says. "You got a name?"

Coil's translator fissles and comes to life. "I am known as Born-in-coiling-bundle."

"That sounds dumb as hell. Well Coil, you said you had something to give me in exchange for this job, let's see it."
He waves the Valen's puppet away as Coil lifts the crate's lid and Lyle's eyes go wide.

The waters are warm today, a rarity in these parts so far from the sacred waters of the spires. Coil pulses a gust of water and shoots up closer to the surface. It is still black. Not a single star above. They are only in the crystals, as he was taught time and again at the temple universities, but for some reason he still liked to check now and then. They once filled the sky with light at night, and there was even a day once, long ago, but there is neither now, nor will there ever be.
He still likes to check.

He skims the surface for a while as he makes his way to the jetstream and tries to picture what it would look like to be so close to a star as to have it actually turn the sky bright with light. Maybe he will find a world like that soon.

The jetstream takes him and hurls him across the Divide at great speed. Even at his velocity it takes a great deal of time to make the journey. He always hated it, the endless blackness of the depths below, especially with nothing but the blackness of the sky above. Even space did not feel as empty.

Something moves in the depths. A goliath tail whips in a flash across his view as something moves along the edges of the abyssal drop off. It crunches the rock as it slides along it and Coil flashes a bright yellow for a moment. He hated Divide.

Eventually there is a reflection in the waters above, and the distant lights of the Reef can be seen in the distance on an island standing in the center of the abyssal depths. He hops from the jetstream and shoots himself down to the outcropping of buildings. Further in is the spire, the center of the Reef and source of the sacred crystals themselves. He knows what he needs, and he needs to get them tonight, but doing so could be considered a heresy by many.

The security is tight, but he is a Pilot, one of the trusted given the sacred privilege to swim in the void above, at the very least he will be able to get to the hangars, even if his training is not quite complete yet. Hopefully.

The temple is vast, and filled with activity as always, but the hangars are typically vacant at these times. He quickly passes the doors and makes his way through the twisting tunnels and corridors, all filled with busy students and observant locals carrying supplies and tributes through the temple grounds. He blends in perfectly with his case held in his grip, and quickly makes his way to the hangars.

The doors bend at his touch and he enters. He can hardly move in the presence of the sacred craft. He can't even believe what he is doing, how could the clergy be mistaken? It was he that is wrong, and this is madness!

But he had seen the records himself, he had studied the history and it just didn't add up right. No, he knew he had to be right, he would bet his life on it.
Coil shuddered as he realised he was indeed betting his life on it. It was a stupid decision, but it had to be done. If he could find one, just one other world with this grand gift and return with the news, it could change everything. He opened the case and reached for the Slip drive. Each shard shivered at the touch, and it's roots retracted from the Void Cutter as he pulled them from the compact hull and placed each in the case. He quickly made his way from the room.

There is a hiss. The sound of an air jet as someone enters the room. He turns to see his mentor, Flowing-in-Faith drift above the work tables.
"Why did I know you would be here?" He asks. "Despite my warnings."

Coil stamers for words, his skin flashing in vain.

We should give Theseus our memories of Tadega, minus the part where our drones start doing their best xenomorph impression. They're basically video evidence of the Union government kidnapping, torturing, and vivisecting a newly discovered species. If they were leaked to the net, not only would it cause a huge political shitstorm but it would give us a lot of leverage when we finally reveal ourselves.

"Stop! It is you that lacks understanding!"
But Coil is already at the door. He hears the door bend open and a rush of water behind him and he bends an eye stalk to see. Coil manages to swim from view as his mentor moves frantically through the crowd in pursuit.

The city was highly secure, but even outside of a cutter Coil's talents as a pilot was prevalent. He dashed into the hollow reaches of the Reef below and into the twisting and turning tunnels of the superstructure where his contact was waiting. He did not know his name, but he was known to lead the accursed and those who would shelter them away from this world. It was a path of heretics and betrayers, and to take the holy relics of the Slip drive along such a route was a heinous blasphemy, but he has no choice.

The building is a small home assigned to workers of the heat distribution plant, but he doubts the contact is the assigned dweller. They exchange the codes, flashing a series of patterns in the tunnel before the door opens and he follows the contact inside. Within there is at least two dozen cursed mutes, their blank faces stair like corpses without a single hue of emotion or a trace of speech. They are unsettling. Coil finds a corner as far from them as he can, and wraps his arms around the case, holding it like an egg.

"We're moving out soon. Get your things and follow the tunnel." The contact says, and he opens a wall compartment to a cramped and unlit passage. It takes hours to navigate, but opens to a decently sized chamber. Wires and power conduits flow into a device in the center of the room. "The other side will be dry, hold your breath and wait."

The device hums with energy, and a sphere of darkness grows in the center. It draws in the water around it and he can feel himself being pulled in. The contact has strapped himself to a console, and Coil passes by in a panic of thrashing tentacles and vibrant color flashes. He falls into the sphere and there is nothing-

-and then there is everything.

Stars, stars everywhere, filling the space around him with motes of light more beautiful than anything he had imagined.

He hits a metal wall as the airlock shuts behind him, and the stars disappear. Most of the water sucked through drifts in the chamber in globules for a moment before the room is flooded. The others twitch as they take in deep breaths in a grotesque display like dancing corpses, their blank white bodies soic in absolute silence.

A door opens and several lights flash around it.
"Welcome aboard. Please find yourself a place to sleep for the duration of the voyage. Payment for your ticket will be discussed prior to docking procedures."

Coil tightens his grip on the case.

You search through his mind for deeper memories, he has lived a long life, although among Ceph he is still young.

The spires of the university reach all the way to the surface. They are a marvel to behold. Coil drifts down through one of the apertures to the library within. Only a select few are granted access, and he is proud to be counted among them. The entire history of his people are recorded within the endless caverns and twisting halls of records, from the earliest carvings to the latest scriptures of the prophets.

"Why are you here?" You ask.
When Coil was first granted access to the library he dove into its wonders, taking in all there was to see. The deeper he went the stranger the lessons became, and eventually he found several... discrepancies.
That, of course, would be heresy, so he was sure he was mistaken.
"I am here to check something." He thinks to you. He seems to already be accustomed to you, his thoughts bouncing between the tiny quasi-brains and your parasite before forming a proper thought.

He finds the section devoid of activity. The room contains only ancient data, history long forgotten by most. Most of the shelves are empty, including several he could have sworn were filled not a week prior. He must be mistaken, like he was with the discrepancies.

"You know what they say is false." You say simply.

"No!" He replies. "It cannot be wrong, any more than water can be dry! It is something far more simple, a forgotten scripture. Yes."

You watch as Coil moves from shelf to shelf in search of the right tome. He finds an ancient carving, from near the beginning. It shows the Singing Stone coming to the world and shattering, bringing them into their glorious service. It was not long after that they had banished the sun and the stars to protect their devoted people, and displaying their powers in a way that none would ever forget.

And there is is, just beneath it. A tiny symbol of a swirling creature unlike anything he had ever seen. It's wings seemed to reach out in a fluttering motion and its body coiled around a shard of ice, the symbol of death. He could find no other reference to them directly, but the carving clearly went on to become the character for heretic in the ancient carved languages of the first tribes to be born in the shadows of the Reef. Here, they seem to hold a special significance.

"You know it means something important." You say as he toils over the carvings, reaching out for stone totems and ancient tomes bound in and Reefer skin.
>>
>>37034888
>It's wings seemed to reach out in a fluttering motion and its body coiled around a shard of ice, the symbol of death.
Insect wings? The shard of ice makes me thing of the dead crystals discarded by the Psionic cannon but i'm not sure.
>>
>>37034888
"It is damage to the stone." He says, but he knows otherwise.

He had found a tome that seemed to hold a similar symbol, referred to as the Doom Seekers, literal embodiments of sin and corruption. The tome seemed to speak of them turning from their masters and reaching to the stars for their own hunger like spoiled children. The ending chapters celebrated the guidance of the crystals as the first of the Void Cutters brought them down, granting them oblivion for their arrogance.
The tome is gone now, an empty space on the shelf marks its proper place.

"Are you sure?" You ask, knowing the response perfectly well.

"No, but I should be! I should not be here, to question is to doubt, and doubt is heresy!"
Even as he tries to turn himself away, he reaches for another tome, this time searching for more of the so-called Doom Seekers, the belligerent children that appeared to have been struck from history.

He digs deeper and ever deeper in the library, and finds another symbol. He recognizes it immediately as the ancient symbol of destruction and corruption, a circle with six sharp edges coming from the sides, and a horned spike at the top. It was the mark of evil, but here it was far more descript, like a drawing of a creature. The tablet upon which it is found has been shattered long ago, but several pieces remain. On one is a shard of ice in two pieces, on another is the strange symbol, and between them is a missing piece, with a strange beam of energy connecting them.

Without the destroyed fragment a translation would be impossible, but there is significance to this unknown symbol, a strange eight pointed star, the six outer points thin and wispy while the top and bottom point are larger, with a set of what appear to be horns set atop it.

They looks almost like...

"No. No!" Coil is in a panic as he hurls the slab away. It shatters to nothing against the wall and cracks run up the walls. Fractures form as the illusion slips. "That can't be right, I wright, I was wrong!"

His body thrashes within the pod. "It is you! The evil, the ones that corrupted the ancient servants and caused them to be stricken from history!"
An eye opens in a panic within the tank and thrashes on its stalk.

"What does the slab say?" You ask calmly, his fragmented mind slowly processing the question as panic runs through from sub-brain to sub-brain.

"Death slayers." He says finally.

"Now, how can one who kills death be evil? How can you say such things without the missing piece?"

Your drone collects his fragmented mind together, bringing them into a semblance of order once more as you work to shape his logic. You have long ago removed his Thought Shell and have had your parasite take its place, his mind relies on yours to think, and it gives you a level of freedom beyond your normal limitations. He slowly calms, his body slowly writhing in terror within the pod as you bring his many sub-brains back into line.

Upon reading your post, I now understand why the Gardener Queen came out he way she was. Yes we can live sealed up underground forever, but it is a hell of a way to live and more or less cuts off any possibility of native life from growing and producing useful D.N.A. adaptions for us. That and it should be easier to farm food on the surface than underground.

"You would condemn the hive over a forgotten translation?"

"I should have never left! I was warned."

"They kept you in ignorance, how is seeking to learn of your past wrong?" Your questions sting, and he can bring no answers to mind. "You only wish to know the truth, but what if the truth uproots your beliefs?"

His eyes twitch on their stalks. "Impossible! You were removed from the records to protect those who would be turned from the truth!"

"Knowledge grants power, not ignorance. Why would your people hold a library if not to learn from the past, and why would it be restricted from your people if not to control them?"

He is in no position to argue, the thoughts feel correct in his mind as you form them for him. He is arguing with himself as much as he argues with you, and he is losing.
"They seek to guide us on their plan, that is the way we have lived. I thought I was fulfilling that plan." His skin turns a deep purple and flashes hues of dark grays and browns as his panic ebades to sorrow.

"What plan? How does it lead to anything but death, for you and others?" You ask, but the thought is formed in your drone's mind, now partially his own mind. He cannot help but agree even as his many sub-brains try to deny it.

"I-" He stammers as his minds try to avoid forming together. "I do not know."

"They removed the sun and stars of your world, and would have you fight their wars for them. Will you continue to serve in ignorance, or do you wish to accept the truth?"

Coil does not respond, his skin ripples into a texture akin to a stone and a dark gray covers his body. His sub-brains can find no response, and your own drone serves as his central brain, finding no flaw in your logic.

Your pod opens and Coil's form pours out onto the floor in a heap of flesh, a living embodiment of dismay. "I wish I had never left." He thinks.

You respond softly. "Ignorance may make us happy, but the truth makes you stronger. Which would you prefer?"

How many adaptations do you expect to gain in an environment that evolves through natural selection? The Hive's method of crafting adaptations through engineering is infinitely more efficient, and faster.
>>
>>37036815
We still need to use a process of natural selection at some point.
We either reap the benefits of a world which has naturally evolved, or we throw our guys at other guys until we've figured out how to make superior guys.
Getting the evolution of another world to do the legwork is just plain simpler.
>>
>>37036790
We just don't HAVE to is what I am saying.
>>37036815
Quite a bit really, We are not all that imaginative about what to make without seeing it in action in nature.

So...we're turning Coil, have turned Lyle for the most part, and Elizabeth...we can probably just ask her point-blank 'hey, wanna make this official?' Anyone else we're trying to convert?

A worker brings the small hover harness and places it on the floor beside him. An eye stalk leans over to look at it. It takes a long while for him to gather his thoughts again, but eventually a tentacle reaches out to the harness.

"I suppose" he says, "I will become stronger."

Your worker leaves as he floats away like a gray cloud of tendrils.

But the more random process of natural selection could offer up good mutations out of serendipity that we may not have even thought of. >>
>>37036944
Did you actually pay any attention to what we've learned about him lately? His position was actually amusingly parallel to our own, in a strange way. Left with a vague legacy to pursue, he prioritized it before other matters.

Seiner's memories in a Seiner body is useful and we now know he's easily convinced to work with us. He never thought of us as some grand threat, we were the key to the puzzle he has grappled with for most of his life.

Seiner is an interesting character, people are just getting hung up on the small stuff.
>>
>>37036944
Why torture him? He already paid the ultimate price for his hubris and slacked morals. It would be much more efficient if just put him into our growing human research department. He's been desperate to investigate Earth for nearly a century, and we can give him a front row seat inexchange for his analysis and expertise.
>>
>>37037016
How would we even do that?

No, better ask her about how her chat with Theseus went, and confirm that the Ceph do indeed serve the Crystal menace. Then float the idea of what she thinks Theseus would do if he knew the whole story. He's likely caught on to almost everything, but there is still that doubt in his collective minds. Would Theseus run? Help us? Join them?
>>
>>37036969

If this were fantasy, Lee would be that farmboy we maybe fancied that was nice to everyone.

And then we explored the entire world and slew Dragons, Gods, Demons, Demon Gods, Dragon Gods, and other various abominations, dined with Gods we didn't kill and maybe walked across several alternate planes of creation and may or may not have seduced a Lord or twelve.

It's just how it is, man.

>>

>>
>>37037368
I guess we're offering our improvements to make her our pseudo-child, which is basically our equivalent of a citizen.

I think if we do that we should wait until we can offer immortality to her.
>>
>>37037368
If she voluntarily wants to go full Kerrigan with us, I thought. That wouldn't include a parasite, we'd just genetically augment her in places. Just what I personally imagined.
>>
>>37037368
Different anon, but I'd guess the equivalent of saying "Hey buddy, you've ben crashing on my couch for a while now, do you want to officially just move in?". No substantive change except for the expectations and understanding of the respective parties involved.
>>
>>37037402
I really don't get the obsession of some with augmenting persons. As a goal in and of itself, I mean. There's a tone of deciding to do it first and coming up with justifications after rather than doing it when it's useful and makes sense.
>>
>>37036860
Your speaker moves to the door and it flexes open. Elizabeth appears to have finished her conversation with Theseus. She wipes at her eyes as you enter.
"Ah, I wasn't expecting, well-" She pauses as she gets up from the chair. "Thank you. For the conversation I mean. It's been a while since I last spoke with him and ever since all I hear is how the Unity blew up this base or killed these people or hacked into such and such and stole everyone's bank accounts. It's nice to actually hear from him again and get his side."

"And what was his side?" Your speaker asks.

She taps a key and the screen of skin goes blank. "He does what he needs to to survive. The Union makes no qualms about wanting to kill him. He would be perfectly in the right to to a lot more damage than he has, but he hasn't. He even fell back from the expanse when the Union started moving in, and I'm sure that hurt his industrial base."

You remember the other humans still in your prison area. "The other humans" you say, "they seem to have been agitated at you."

She sighs. "Yea, they're getting cranky I suppose. Humans can get stir crazy like that, and I suppose it's not without merit. We'll have to figure out what to do with them eventually."

Your speaker turns its head curiously. "You do not care of the other humans?"

"Well of course I care! I just..." She rests a hand on her forehead and starts to pace. "This is a lot bigger than a few lives. Your species is at risk, and I'm willing to say that an entire species is more important than a few humans. I made the exact same decision with Theseus." She picks up a mug on the nearby counter and takes a sip of the sweet spring water within, then takes a deep breath. "I don't think I was quite ready for the consequences of that at the time, but I think I am now." She takes a sip of her drink. "So, was there anything in particular you wanted to discuss?"

Okay, so time to craft a cover story for Lee that is semi-plausible and can be sold to the public. We can clean it up as we gain more information.

Lee was captured by dangerous radicals who managed to escape from. Wanted by both the Union government and the terrorists, he managed to charter a vessel and fled to Leeland hoping to hide among the natives who were friendly with him since nobody would be likely to follow. Not his best moment, but he was scared.

Then! It turns out Leeland was a nursery planet/conservatory of an intelligent space-faring civilization. They learn of his actions and decide that he is suited to being their representatives to a foreign polity they cannot help but to contact, if only for the sake of the innocents they guard who have been interfered with.

Sloppy first draft, woo.

Your speaker chitters. "Spine spies?"

She taps her head. "I can feel them, you know. It's weird, like someone with headphones playing too loud. At first I thought I could hear their thoughts, but eventually I realized they must have been something of yours." She shrugs. "Honestly I was a little disappointed that I couldn't read their minds, it would make talking to them a lot easier, but I suppose it makes sense as a security measure. No way it would slide if they found out, though, but humans are weird like that, sticklers for individuality, but by god they will follow a leader right off a cliff." She seems somewhat frustrated with them, her mind briefly leaks several thoughts of dealing with them in the past, but nothing beyond a few flashes of images.

You probe through their minds for concepts of human entertainment. "Would a pool be acceptable for them?"

She bursts out in laughter. "Yes, yes I do suppose it would! A prison camp with a pool, how the hell will they ever spin that one?" She lets out a long chuckle as your speaker chitters. "The hive has discovered news regarding the human homeworld and it's moon, however."

She stifles her laughter and wipes a tear from her eye. "You mean Earth, what about it?"

"It appears a device was found within its moon, which lead directly to its destruction after it was used as a weapon. It was discovered by Seiner's grandfather, who claimed it spoke to him."

"What?" She snaps at the sudden change in subject. "Hold on, Seiner, Adam Seiner? That old sack of-" Her fists clench. "His grandfather found an alien device that can talk, and he uses it as a giant gun? What in the hell is wrong with people?" She paces the room in frustration, circling the chamber before returning to your speaker. "Wait, how did you get this kind of data? Upon request from Theseus, Dr. Seiner did not survive.

"Well that certainly explains the hostility. Seiner doesn't exactly make the best first impression."

"His theories from his grandfather were not popular among the other humans. He tried to capture and learn from the hive's children. The information was found after they had escaped his facility."

"Well it sounds like a lot managed to happen." She says, "I assume that Seiner didn't live very long after that. Your drones don't mess around with that sort of thing."
Your speaker chitters in agreement, and she takes a seat in her chair again, propping her elbow on the desk. "I always thought he was a bastard and a nut, but I never thought he would actually be right about something. Who knows what they found on the moon, or how long it's been their? Or what kind of knowledge it could have contained, instead they blew it up along with the whole moon!"

"Perhaps it is best it was not listened to. Similar weapons have been made in the past using the crystals of the Ceph masters. Listening to them is ill advised." Your speaker chirps.

She runs her hand across her face and lets out a yawn. "Well I suppose you have a point. As much as I hate to admit it, some things are too dangerous to use." She rubs her eyes. "Wish we could find our own Mount Doom for these crystals of yours, no such convenience in sight though."

So I've been thinking about Seiner. From what we gleaned from Elizabeth's memories, he looked like a sleazy political player who threw her and Theseus under the bus to further his own agenda.

And he /did/, but it didn't help him at all. He just wasn't as capable as intrigue as I thought he was. I think all those times he assured Elizabeth he'd work things out he actually meant it. He got played by his sponsors who threw /him/ under the bus.

Add orbital pylons for M-323? At least 3, preferably more.

Anons, we need to start on actual fleet. We have resources, time to use them.
>>
>>37039054
QD, can we set up a 'standing build/hatch' order, to be started each time it completes itself?

Something like laying X number of drones each time we complete Y number of farms.
Lesse; one worker can feed himself and 49 other workers, in a farm?
So at 50/farm, we'd want a standing build order of...
10k workers
1k farms
And that'd give us 40k worker surplus.

A worker costs 5N to lay, and a 40k worker surplus would be 80k nutrients, which means we can lay 16k workers on the surplus from the sweat off the backs of our previous drones, immediately.
That gives us a 6k worker laying surplus, or 30k nutrients.

So assuming we stagger the build order to that each 10k drones are laid just as their farms come online, we'll be making a 30k nutrient surplus. Which is kind of thin for a 4x, but then again we'll have a fuckton of drones.

This is of course, not mentioning that 9k of the 10k drones are not needed to farm.
So that's 9k drones free to help build the next 1k farms; forever accruing.

On the natives, I think just shoving biomods at them is... unfair. Shelter, food, education, these are all things that could improve their lives in meaningful ways. Your ships move in and you take a proper account of the resources as a picket fleet of corvettes blinks into orbit to collect resources.

Thanks for running. Also:
How many baseline worker drones does it take to make a farm plot in a single day? To get it up and running?
Would you let us set up a standing build orders thing?

>>37039376
That's only for the first day of operation. It returns a 30k surplus on the initial investment, and then continues to spit out enough nutrients to support 49k workers each day afterwards. Which is roughly 98k nutrients.
The cycle I'm imagining is thus:
Make drones;
Drones make farms;
Farms up and running;
Lay drones using profits from first day operation of farms (see step 1);
Repeat until the planet collapses under its own weight.

Why not run a charity here? Especially one as low-cost as uplifting such a primitive species.

So I've been looking into modern advances (for stuff we might learn) and besides people already looking into regeneration, I also came across this:

http://www.medgadget.com/2014/04/xstat-gunshot-wound-system-approved-by-fda-for-use-on-battlefield.html

Can't let the humans outdo us I say.
>>

>Why not run a charity here
Well I could think of lots of reasons, some involving safety and others efficiency, but let's go with "I don't want to".
I don't want to be a nice good race rushing to save the universe and asking everyone how we can assist. We are here as the hive to fight for the hive. No one else.
>>
>>37039430
This.

Also, the important distinction is that the Ralighan natives were sapient before we showed up and kicked in their door.
The black crystals are cradle robbers; Coil and his ilk would probably be quite literally nonsapient without the aid of cybernetics, and the Skyl were being actively targeted before they even achieved sapience.

>>37039435
Because we like having good diplomatic relations with everyone but the black crystals, queen, and humans.
Also it would be rude to not answer their prayers once in a while.

>>37039431
>jamming them full of biotech doesn't help anything
How? They're literal hunter gatherers. A Ralighan with biotech enhanced immune responses, or self-knitting bones is going to have a hell of an advantage.
>>
>>37039455
>"I don't want to"
There are other players, you know.
:^)
>>
>>37039430
There's also leagues of middle ground. Pointing them towards a slightly better stick doesn't mean we're giving them spaceships all of a sudden.

I just want to be aloof neighbours who are also bros, honestly.

It takes a single worker per farm to maintain, and technically only one worker is needed, but up to about a dozen or so can work on building one at once without getting in eachothers way.

As it is your workers will automatically migrate to a new construction site and focus on the tasks you give them as much as possible, so your caverns are filled with piles of workers making farms right now, as well as many of the defensive sites, but many of the more distant batteries and your planned pylons, for example, are suffering until workers get to them in big enough numbers. Standing build orders would most likely soak up a lot of workers all the time and slow down the construction of other things.

As it is, your drones will always assemble in a fashion most efficient to get what you want done done. Hives will trade drones to be most efficient, as well as trading resources freely to pay for whatever is needed.
>>
>>37039458
>Because we like having good diplomatic relations with everyone but the black crystals, queen, and humans
No, we like haveing no diplomatic relations or neutral relations with others.
And we can answer their prayers by talking or sharing food. No need to make then reliant in our tech. That's a pretty big step.
>>
>>37039470
Yes, when I say "uplift" I don't really mean that I want to take them straight to the space-age. Just...make their lives at least a little better. Sedentary agriculture and whatnot.
>>
>>37039458
Giving modifications to a select few is going to have far-reaching sociological ramifications. I'm opposed to providing any aid that might require we essentially take over their systems of governance to prevent massive religious wars.

Biomods also increase food consumption by quiet a bit. Stronger and faster isn't always better if the boost doesn't help in getting food, or if there is no more food to get.

Shoving biomods into them is lazy thinking.
>>
>>37039467
I guess there are aren't there
>>
>>37039470
As it is, you already get credit for just about any good fortune.
Of course, bad luck also ends up being explained as someone somehow angering you.
>>
>>37039490
>neutral relations
What's the thing with the space robot, then?

>reliant on our tech
Well, we could give them the means to produce some minor equipment and stuff (egglayer modified for limited production capability; use by Ralighan natives), but I get the feeling most people might object.

>>37039503
Okay, so doing like what >>37039493
suggested is, in your opinion, better?
Then lets do that. Give em agriculture and slightly better spears and basic medicine and whatnot. We could just dump our gifts in the center of the village. Hopefully that explains the whole 'for all of you; not just some' well enough.
>>
>>37039508
See, this is the kind of trend I'd like to guide them away from, or at least not reinforce.

Tempted to tell them their destiny is to be Builders themselves, that they have, and always have had, the potential to grasp that which they perceive as divinity by themselves and that we have returned not to aid them, but to watch the growth of equals though it will take many of their lifetimes.

But that'd probably complicate things.
>>
>>37039541
>giving another race a modified egg layer
Here we go.
>>
>>37039541
Basically, but even more mild, ideally. Gotta be chill.

A lot also depends on their biology. Deferring final judgement till we know more about them.
>>
>>37039562
Yeah, that doesn't sound like not making them reliant on our tech at all. In fact, that sounds like the exact opposite. Also, they wouldn't' even be able to operate such a thing without us and the drones would be- no, not even going to list all the problems with this. It's a recipe for maximum reliance no matter how you cut it.
>>
>>37039480
>about a dozen or so
For simplification, going to assume 20. The higher simplification of 1.5 dozens.

This means that in a brood of 10k, with 1k immediately leaving to man farms (leaving 9k left), you end up with the optimal building capacity of 450 farms. This is less than ideal.
We would need 20k workers to produce 1k farms at an ideal rate. Then a further 1k workers to staff those.
So we'd want clutches of 21k workers.
This costs 105k Nutrients to achieve, and the 1k farms will give off 100,000 nutrients when they first start up, or 100k.
So we're actually in the hole by 5k nutrients if we try this.
That said, if we focus on farms instead of pure drones, we can keep the 20k drones, and just lay the 1k drones to man the farms the 20k drones have made.
This makes things much easier.

I added in some stuff on minor races in the wiki.

Speaking of which, feel free to edit or add to anything on the page.
>>
>muh slippery slope
We are already talking about throwing parasites into all the humans, it's perfectly reasonable to force the ball creatures into being relyant on us, uplift them, and force them to fight for us.
>>
>>37039562
>sarcasm
>implying I didn't just say 'most people might object'
You need to read, my friend.

>>37039594
>wouldn't be able to operate such a thing without us
>drones from an egglayer modified to spit out tools
Come on man, you can read better than this.
>>
>>37039612
I'm not sure everyone shares your definition of "reasonable". It would even be a stretch to argue it is consistent.
>>
>>37039612
To clarify, maybe not force them to fight for us, we aren't the crysrals, but they would end up fighting for us in the end.
>>
>>37039598
I should add; it costs 105k nutrients to lay; half that (52.5k nutrients) to support. Which is easily handled by the farms we just made.

Actually, on second thought, this seems a lot more feasible than I previously considered.
Cause the farms are gonna produce a net 98k, the 20k drones leftover will eat 40k, so we end up with 58k left; or 116k nutrients after two days.
So depending on how long it takes 20 drones to make a farm, we could be looking at a pretty hefty growth rate; that assuming we actually slow the fuck down enough not to crush ourselves under so much egg production.
>>
>>37039623
That's not how egglayers work. There's basic hive infrastructure that does that. I was giving you the benefit of the doubt, but it appears I was mistaken. And they still wouldn't be able to operate it without us or our Thinkers running it because if it's truly independent it shuts down. And they wouldn't be able to produce these tool-producing devices in the first place, meaning that their population is entirely reliant on our providing them. Again, simple extrapolation of consequences.
>>
...let's talk about this next thread guys...
When we are all properly awake and reasonable.
>>
>>37039651
>benefit of the doubt towards assuming the worst
I'm not sure that term means what you think it means.
But alright, you caught me in a naming wibbly-wobbly mistake, and I was going to bring up the production of tool-producing devices in a proper proposal. Though I will admit you got me on the thinkers.
Now, to satisfy your intense desire for the people you speak with to lay out exactly what they're thinking:

An organic 3d printer von neumann machine capable of producing additional copies of itself; as well as a library of shapes, objects, and materials that can be utilized by the user to create (within the limits imposed by the creator of the original printing device) whatever they so please; namely building materials, acid sacks or similar, spear weapons or similar, cloth or similar, and the eggs or related methods required to produce additional organic 3d printing von neumann machines.
Or as you would refer to it: Hive infrastructure.

Alternatively, we figure out how to get a society of spearchuckers to figure out bioengineering of their local environment.
