You are Nina Tuckemby, a sixteen year-old sophomore student at Scarridge High.

You look out of your window from your bed and watch snowflakes drift down and settle on the ledge. Unfortunately, the snow only came yesterday - days late for a white christmas.
Christmas this year was rather unfortunate - the academyship had been forced away from port in Scarridge, and instead had to set sail for the English Channel, depriving you of a chance to see your family for Christmas.
Despite not being able to see your family as you do every year, however, you were not alone this year. You look back fondly on the night you spent at your best friend, Jess' house with Emily and Kate, exchanging gifts and making merry.

You check the time. 11:45.
You haven't done much today, just get up, make breakfast and watch some television. School's out for the winter, and you're feeling laid back - although, now you think about it, there is some work you could be doing.

Suddenly, the television turns on. You look over too see what's on.

> Hello! I'm Tina Stewart, thank you for tuning in to the weekly Tankery Report!

Ah yes, the tankery report! You always remember to set a reminder for it the day before.

> This week's news: LGA defeat Houston High in the Southern USA regionals, and rumours of a new USA/EU Tankery League are brewing.
> Locally, the Scarridge High tankery team has been forced to abandon their match with Lockland Technical after their academyship was forced towards the English channel by unfavourable weather conditions.
> They have, however, scheduled a match against the British team of Portsmouth University. This development has lead to talks of a new USA/EU Tankery League.
>>
You sigh longingly. You've wanted to be a member of the tankery team ever since you joined Scarridge High as a Freshman, but they've never had any need for extra crews (Apart from that one time in Junior year when that bitch Julia and her gang of cronies managed to beat out you and your friends to join the team. God, she drives you mad.)
You'd jump at the opportunity to be able to command your own tank, to feel the heat of battle, hear the thud of the guns, the roar of the engines - but unfortunately, you haven't had the opportunity.

> What to do?

> Do that homework you were set last month.
> Meet up with your friends.
> Read more about the rumours of the new tankery league.

Woot, another GuP quest!
>do your homework
>>
> Meet up with your friends
>>
>>37043758

Now you think about it, you really should get that homework done. The physics proffessor is starting to get sick of it, and you're starting to get sick of him.

...

Jesus, that took forever. You sit back in to your chair and sigh, before putting the completed homework away on the corner of the desk where you're totally going to forget about it before the start of term. But you did it, and it's the thought that counts, right?

As you get up to go to the kitchen to reward yourself with a post-work snack, a knock at the door draws your attention.

"Ninaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!"

Oh god no it's emily and it's only 7pm and you know she's been eating sugar or something

You take a breath and get ready to face the storm that is the sugar-hyped Emily, before turning the handle and opening the door.

"Oh, hi guys." You say, realising that Emily dragged Kate and Jess along with her.

Nina rushes in, and pulls you in for a hug, squeezing the air out of your lungs. Jess notices you turning red in the face and grabs Emily by the waist and pulls her away from you.

"Sorry," Jess says, "We decided to go to a cafe today, and she ordered basically any sweet thing they had."

Emily's a sweet girl (no pun intended.) but you really wish she didn't get so hyperactive every time she ate sugar. Amidst the initial chaos, you notice Kate slip in quietly, shutting the door behind her.
>>
>>37043933
"So, any reason you all came 'round?" Not that you mind seeing your friends, it's just a bit odd for them to appear without warning.

Jess is the first to speak up - "We were texting you and asking to come to the cafe with us, but you completely ignored the texts!"

Oh, damn. You must have managed to blank out your phone whilst you were trundling through your assignment.

"We just thought we might as well stop by because you didn't get to come to lunch with us."

That's nice of them, you think.

...

They really aren't making any conversation though. Just three blank faces staring at you. They didn't bother to actually think of anything to talk about.

"So... did you do anything interesting today?"

Three blank faces.

"See anything?"

"Oh!" Emily exclaims, "The tankery team was in the cafe for some sort of special lunch!"

You perk up. "Any idea what it was for?"

"Not a clue," she replies, "but it seemed like a really big deal."

"Maybe you should find out, Nina." Kate interjects.

"Yeah, I probably will."

"I mean - we aren't really doing anything here. Why don't we just go now?" You suggest. "Besides, if that bitch Julia is there, I need my sassy crew for backup."

"She makes you mad, doesn't she?" Kate looks at you with an amused look.

"God, yes. She's such a fucking bitch she thinks she can steal my spot on the tankery team and get away with it and her hairs longer than mine but that shits all genetics and-"

"Alright, Nina, we get it. Let's go, before she has a stroke."

...

Now, where to look? It occurs to you that you don't actually know where any of the tankery team dorm.

"We could ask at the cafe." Suggests Kate.

"Why not the tankery sheds!" A still excited Emily proposes.

"We could just ask around the dorms?" Jess ponders.

tonks ahoy
>>
>>37044257

The tankery shed sounds like the most sensible idea.

...

The tankery sheds are enormous hangars at the entrance to the Tankery Grounds. Partially subterrainean, it is cleverly disguised from the outside by a small wall of trees and shrubs.
You know the place pretty well, as the Tankery team holds all of the bi-annual Tankery demonstrations here. You walk through the chain-link gate and enter onto the huge courtyard outside the sheds.

"Looks like there's a few people here." Kate indicates towards the small door open at the end of the sheds.

You walk to the door, taking in the latent aroma of gunpowder, oil and fuel. The tarmac floor is literred with tread marks.

"Hello?" You poke your head in the door.

"Oh hi Nina, nice to see you!" a voice chimes out from behind a Cruiser Mark VI. A familiar voice. A bitchy-ass voice.

"Oh, Julia." You say through gritted teeth. "How pleasant to see you."

"Nice to see you too, Nina!" She smiles at you past her stupid, long hair. "Why are you down here?"

Kate pushes past you into the sheds. Julia notices her and gives her a winning grin and a little wave too. Don't do that face at my friends, you hag.

"Hi Julia. We were just wondering what the occasion was at the cafe today?"

"Oh, I knew I saw you there! Sorry, I would have come over and said something, but I was busy with the rest of the team. Yeah, we were having a party!"

"Yes, Julia, but why?"

"We've recently come into some money," She winks and taps her nose. "We're getting a little something special! We're calling a special school assembly here tommorow. Hope you turn up!"

"Yeah, sure, we will. No telling us what it's about though?"

"Nope, it's a secret!" She winks again. You wish she'd stop that.

"Alright!" You cut in before Kate has a chance to continue conversation. "We're going now, we have... something to do." You collar Kate and swiftly leave, shutting the door behind you.

"Bye then!" Julia calls out from inside.
>>
>>37044529

"You should really learn to get along with Julia," Jess turns to you as you all walk back towards the gate. "She genuinely seems like a nice girl."

"She seems like a bitch."

Before Jess gets the opportunity to berate you further, Emily hushes you all as soon as you turn the corner out of the gate.

"Nina! Did you see what they had in there?"

"What, the Crusader?"

"No! Over at the back of the shed! Three huge tarps! I bet that's what the secret is!"

"Wait," Kate looks puzzled, "When did you come in to the sheds?" Now you think about it, you didnt notice her either.

"You were hogging the door and I was bored outside, so I tried the next door along."

Huh.

"We should find out what was under there!"

Now she mentions it, you are really intrigued by what could be under the tarps.

"I have a plan! But we'll have to wait until nightfall..." Emily trails off.

"We could always just ask Julia nicely, maybe a bribe?" Jess proposes.

"Let's just wait until tommorow." Kate rolls her eyes.

..."And that's when Kate uses the pen to disable the laser grids! Now, at that precise moment, Nina, you need to do your best dog impression to lure the guard dogs away from the sheds, and-"

"Emily." You check her.

"Y-yeah?"

"None of those things exist. Like, literally none. There's only a chain link gate and a few locks in the way, and maybe the night guard if they have one."

Emily looks at you with a miffed expression, like a child who has just been told they can't, in fact, have a pet tiger.

"Well, I think it's good that we keep the plan in mind, just in case! Fail to prepare, prepare to fail!" She crosses her arms and huffs.

You sigh internally. You're going to need to say something or she's going to be in a mood.

> What to do?

> Fine, we'll stick to the plan!
> I think mine might be a tad more sensible.

Jesus. Alright. None of those threats are actually there, so what's the worst that could happen?

"We'll do it."

She spins back, gleaming with pride. "Alright! Time to gear up!"

...

A few hours later, and it's midnight. It's midnight, and you're all dressed in black, equipped with ridiculous items ranging from a ballpoint pen to several rolls of duct tape, crouched behind the trees at the Tankery Grounds.

"I'll scope it out!" Emily whispers.

She stands up and produces her mobile phone, before opening the camera app.

"This isn't the time for selfies, Emily!" You chide her, "Now get the binoculars!"

"This is my binoculars." She tuts, before turning back to her phone and pinching the screen to zoom in. You die a little inside. "Coast is clear! Let's move in!"
Without much warning, Emily launches herself into a frontflip, and proceeds to crouch like a ninja up to the gates. You all follow suit, sans flipping.
"Alright, Kate! Hit the gate with the tactical silencer!"

Kate rolls her eyes, and pops open the pouch on the assault vest that Emily gave her, and produces a can of WD-40 from it. She sprays a little on the hinges, and throws Emily the thumbs up.

Emily returns the gesture, and moves in to sever the padlock with her "Tactical Entry-Denier-Deniers" or bolt cutters. She grunts, and the padlock cracks loudly.
"Alright, let's roll!"
She pushes aside the newly oiled gate, and proceeeds to the tankery sheds through a series of forward rolls.

Suddenly, she stops, and drops to the ground. Did she hurt herself?
Slowly, she turns back to you three and waggles her fingers above her head.

"That's the guard dog signal." Kate whispers.

But they don't have guard dogs! You're sure of it! No dogs are allowed on board since the Scarridge Canine Ban!
>>
>>37045169

"Time for me to shine, I suppose."
She reaches for the implement Emily had given her to deal with this situation. A small childrens toy megaphone, with a few pre-recorded sounds.
"What did she call this thing again?"

"Dastardly Dog Distractor." Jess whispers.

You roll your eyes, "Alright, go for it Kate."

She hits the button marked with a picture of a cartoon dog, and a low-quality dog bark erupts from the other end of the megaphone. In the dark, you hear the screech of a startled cat, as the guard dog raises its unusually long tail, arches its back, and scampers away into the night.

"Was..." Kate starts.

"That was a cat." Jess finishes.

Emily beams back at you all, pleased her plan is working. She flashes you the signal that represents all clear, and beckons you over.
>>
>>37045188

Once you all are huddled around one of the shed doors, Emily addresses you all.

"Okay, time for phase two!"

Oh. You don't actually know phase two. You sort of blanked Emily out after the first five minutes of the briefing.

"I'll keep guard, you guys go on with the plan!" She says, looking expectantly at you all.

You can't let her down now, you don't have time to let her explain it again. Guess it's time to wing it.

"Alright, Emily. Come on girls."

The three of you dissapear around the corner of the sheds, leaving Emily behind.

"So, what's the next step of our master plan?" You query Jess and Kate, "I forgot."

Jess rolls her eyes. Or at least, you think she does. It's pretty dark around here.

"We use the grappling hook to get up to that vent. It's our way in."

"Ah, yes, of course!" You say, confidently. They totally bought it. "So, who's throwing that grappling hook? I can't do it, my hand-eye coordination is awful."

"I don't know if I can do it." Jess mutters.

"Me neither." Kate shakes her head in agreement.

"Jess, you're doing it."

...

Several throws and one minor head injury later, the grappling hook latches onto the vent. Jess looks rather pleased with herself.
You take a solid grip of the rope, and begin to ascend the solid brick walls of the tankery hangar, followed by Kate and Jess. Kate gives the whistle, and Emily scampers around and up after you all.
A short drop takes you inside the shed, and before you lies three large shapes, covered in tarps.

"We'll check all three, but let's start with that big one."

Size matters, after all. You move over to the largest tarp, and instruct your friends to help you pull it off.
One swift pull later and a large metallic form is revealed - a tank!

"So this must be the secret!" Emily squeals.

"I'm honestly impressed we managed to pull this off." Kate adds.

You try and make out the model of the tank in the darkness. The tank is pretty tall, about 8 feet or so, and long too, maybe 25 feet. The turret appears to be mounted at the front, with a fairly long gun.

"Who's there?!" A gruff, male voice shouts.

"Oh crap! We're spotted!" Emily yells, and sprints away to the vent. "Commence Phase 3!" Her voice trails off.
You all follow suit and haul ass up and out of the shed, across to the gate and you keep running all the way to the dorms.

Exhausted, exhilarated and out of breath, you stop to gather your breath.

"Emily-" Jess pants, "You're- you're a mania- maniac!"

Emily beams at Jess. "That was awesome!"

"At least- Jesus... - At least we know what the secret is now." You struggle for air.

"Yeah! New tanks for the team!" Emily is basically vibrating with adrenaline.

"If they have new tanks, they need new crews, right?" You start to regain your composure.

"Right." Kate validates.

"At last! A chance to join! We're going to drive tanks, girls!"

Emily squeals with excitement, but your statement illicits little response from Kate or Jess.

"Kate, Jess, you two are in, right?"

"It's just..." Kate starts, "I don't know if tankery is the thing for me."

"Me neither." Jess adds.

"Fine. I'm sure there'll be plenty of people who'll jump at the chance to ride a tank." You huff, and cross your arms, and Emily follows suit.

Kate and Jess both look a little upset and awkward. "Sorry, Nina, it's just not our thing." Kate says.

"I'd love to do it, but I'm not sure I'm cut out for it." Jess adds.

"No, it's fine." You huff again, harder. "It's really late, we should probably all go home. Bye." You and Emily part from the group to head back to the dorms.
As you walk away, you look back and see Kate and Jess still standing there. Jess seems to be talking to Kate still, who is pulling an awkward expression.

...

You step into your dorm, lock the door behind you, change, and settle down to sleep. You notice it's 02:00. You're going to sleep in if you aren't careful.

Out of curiosity, what will be the (rough) proportion of paper tanks to real ones?

And with that, I'm off to look at tank profiles and lengths
>>
>>37047207

Thanks!

Going to be following normal tankery rules, so you'll be seeing a majority of real tanks, with a couple of one shot prototypes for flavour. I'll try not to add any absolutely imaginary tanks.

Good luck with your search ;)
>>

well the rules don't disallow prototypes as long as their construction was physically started before victory day

Christchurch dammit. OP, it might be a good idea to run this for longer than a couple hours if you wanna gain any measure of appreciable steam.

That being said, looking forward to seeing how you do things, OP. It's good seeing Trude and the girls again, too.
