You didn't scream. At all. Ever.
You might have hopped a little, in surprise. You definitely span in place, flinging yourself around to face the voice.
You may have squeaked. A little eep. Barely auditory.

You definitely didn't scream.

The creature is... Ancient, to say the least.
Dark skin so gnarled that it was invisible in the roots of the tree. It's sitting cross-legged, back straight against the bark, long arms wrapped idly over its chest. Golden eyes peering out from a battered looking elk skull, cracked and broken antlers protruding wide.

It looks like its wearing- not so much a fur coat as just a fur pelt, thrown over it's shoulders like a cloak.

That it's taller than you while seated is rather telling.

But-

It fits the description. From the books, from Lann, from your Mom. This is a wendigo.
You made it.

Now you just need to get your heart-rate under control. And to slow your breathing.

The creature's- a male, by the sound of it- voice sounds like branches creaking in a strong with wind. Low and old.
"We... Have not seen one of the Fate-Spinners in so very... Long. What brings you so far, Child of Web?"

Goddamnit I'm gonna miss most of this thread. No body piss off the Human man eater while I'm gone.

Also Mothia report, we had our last quest of the year with an extra long session so then.

Gin is now officially the Moth Father, the Mothia sat down and had tea with the chief of police, Nye gets his new wife pregnant, the hobogobs are sick of their shit and preparing for all out war, Tim got attacked by a roving band of economists, the Moth village finally discovered the Squirrel breeding pit and Dr. Love started a quest to find the true meaning of Romance.

You didn't even mention hobgoblins. They probably should have declared war BEFORE the Mothia allied themselves with a family of Unstoppable Apex Predators. It's likely the Arachne will want to protect their investment.

So they found a pit full of dead stinking squirrels? They couldn't have survived in the pit all this time, right?

You punch down any hesitation, stepping forward- though you stay a respectable distance back.

"Hello, yes? I am Lyra. And these-"
You gesture behind you with a flip of your hand, pointing to each person in turn.
"-are Sara, Nin, Jin, Lann, and Sheszka."

There's another creaking sound as the creature moves, bone against bone. His arms unfurl, hands easily as big as your torso coming to rest on his knees as he leans forward.
"Shapeshifter. Sharp eyes. Dustbringer. Hmm, Star-blessed."

He twists his head side to side as he focuses on Lann, turning to give each eye a full glimpse of the Half-elf.
"Hnnnnn. Not... Quite human. From the isles? Even further abroad than the spider."

You step forward again, letting your chitin click, and he turns to face you once more.
"We- I need help, yes? My friend- Sheszka- The were-wolf, yes? She is sick. Poisoned."

The creature, the wendigo, stands. He towers over you, creating a patch of shade all his own with his fur cape. His hands reach past your sister, eyes wide and frozen, oddly spindly arms folding past her to pick up the little wolf.

Sheszka stirs, but doesn't wake.

"Hnnnnnnn- poison and sickness. And still alive. It wasn't yours, then."
"A- A hydra, yes? A monster with many heads. It's blood-"

The head swings back, tilting to fix you with one golden eye.
"And where did you find that? They do not travel far."
You shake your head.
"The river, yes. Next to our home. Between the ruins and the waterfall, yes."

The wendigo leans back, his hands cupping to hold your friend.
"They should not be there. Not... in the river.
"Yes."

He looks down again, at the wolf eclipsed by his hands.
"It is a problem. One that will need... Hmm. One at a time, as the seasons pass. Follow me."

He turns, and steps onto a path beyond.

Somedays tg, you deeply disappoint me. I guess I have to ask, why so much hate for male characters? Are they not able to be cute, after their own fashion? If they aren't harmlessly cute, does masculinity really terrify and disgust you lot to such an extreme? If so, why?

I mean, I took the joke for what it was from the majority, but those sorts of over the top satirical responses bring the truly misguided lot out of their corners swinging, thinking they have backers and a cause to defend.

Also, I get bored between REQM's posts and thought discussions of gender's place in narrative could be fun. You guys tend to be well adjusted enough for these sorts of conversations.
>>
>>37045238
welcome to the internet, our main two languages are sarcasm and troll.
>>
>>37045238
>bring the truly misguided lot
People aren't misguided just because they have different tastes.
I can't blame anyone for liking cute girls, and >>37045050 does have apoint.
If we had a mixed group right from the start it wouldn't be odd. Like if one or both of our brothers would have accompanied us from the start. But one guy among several girls as a fix character would be weirder than a all girls group.

And frankly, wanting a character solely for his gender as criteria strikes me as a boring criteria if we have all kinds of weird and exotic creatures to choose from. Not saying you shouldn't, but its not surprising it doesn't get much enthusiasm to work against the detractors.
>>
>>37045056

Apologies for roping you in on the response. Your point is completely valid. The party is over critical capacity as it is now and we don't have a mobile base to keep more folks in. And even then, more characters will mean less time to spend with each.
>>
>>37045409

6 people isn't over critical capacity, it's the soft-limit for fun, but it isn't that.
>>
>>37045469
I just disagree. And the fact that we hear so little from for example Jin in the last few threads, and even rarely from Sara, unerlines my point, its just hard to give so many characters the appropriate space within the updates.
>>
>>37045374

Your point about tonal consistency is fine, as is your claim that selecting a character based on gender doesn't sound good. The fact you are making a valid counter-argument rather than recklessness flinging insults and accusations about my character means you aren't really the group I am talking about.

In all honesty my hopes on a male character (though we don't need one) is that even the slightest bit of gender diversity tends to slow down the /d/eviants.
>>
>>37045512

I assumed it was because Jin is not an early bird and takes the 'Night Watch' and Sara is too busy writing notes in her books...
>>
>>37045523

A single male character in a group of female monsters.

I don't see how this would do anything but empower the /d/eviants, so that reasoning falls flat.
>>
>>37045469

Nin is just so dynamic that she really demands the spotlight, whereas the other characters really ride the background. However, if everyone was about half as demanding as she was, I feel that we wouldn't be able to run an effective scene while doing each justice. There is a reason ideal party size is 4 to 5.
>>
>>37045523
In my experience gender diversity tends to egg on the people that are, lets say opinionated, when it comes to loveinterest gender. Which is never a good thing, especially for people that don't want loveinterests in the first place, even if I realise we are a tiny minority.
>>
>>37045589

Jin and Sheszka make conversations by going "Lyra!" and "Yes" and sometimes "Fire" and "Alpha" and "Stars"
>>
>>37045589
Maybe if Jin had a hobby we didn't know about until now. We know she has a *goal* (pluck the stars from the sky and get stronger like Lyra), but that's not exactly something that will help gain more spotlight unless it comes up, while a new quirk would.

Same with Sheszka. Something about her new life that interests her more than other stuff, maybe.
>>
>>37045691

Jin has three hobbies we know of.

Stars, Fire, and Perching on Lyra.
>>
>>37045691
>>37045705
Her hobbies are flying fast and hunting, its apparently all she does when Lyra isn't around.
>>
>>37045638
I loathe to admit it, but you're right on some level. Jin and Shez need some things to help them stand out (aside from Jin's laziness, which doesn't help too much), they're too much hanger ons of Lyra. Nin is also devoted (that Queen stuff isn't just a joke) but she has a pretty unique personality in the group so she stands out a lot more.
>>
>>37045742
Now here's an idea: She has Lyra impose some small challenges to improve her flying, or hunts big, weird, or interesting things when Lyra isn't around and waits to show her (Lia knows how Nialla feels now).

You give Lann a moment to hop onto your shell before you give chase.
The wendigo has one hell of a stride.

It only takes a few seconds for you to catch up, falling into march behind the giant creature.

"Ah, excuse me?"
"Hmmmm?"

He turns his head, looking over his shoulder at you. Is his eye actually glowing?
"Do you have a- Ah. May I ask your name, yes?"

His chuckles sound like branches cracking.
"I am called Root's Grace, little one."
"Ah."
"We do not name ourselves in the same way."
"Yes."

You let the sounds of travel catch up for moment, the creak of the wendigo's limbs a counterpoint to the clatter of chitin following after him.
"Hello!"

The eye turns again, his gaze shifting over your shoulder and to the fluffy insect waving from your back.
"Little moth."
"Is that because I am young or because everyone is little compared to you?"
"Both, I think."
"I will get older. And bigger."

He nods.
"Some do."
Nin glares a moment while your party shares a laugh.
"I'm going to- No. Why did you call Lyra Fate-Spinner?"

He turns back to the path, changing directions at a set of stones set beneath a tree.
"Fate is a stream. It flows, unending. Some things are meant to be. They will happen."
Nin sits back down, waiting, curling her knees to her chest and hugging her wings around her.

"And the spiders are too stubborn by half."

His declaration startles a chorus of snorts and laughter from behind you. Traitors.

He looks back again, away from the trees and the path.
"I have yet to meet an Arachne willing to accept what will come. Prophecy bounces from the ears like blades from their armour. They changed things, little moth. And now we do not know where we are going."
>>
>>37045746
Its not like Jin never has anything interesting to say, she can be prtetty talkactive and insightful, like that conversation about how Lyras sisters try to compete with and impress her. its just that she gets overshadowed by constant stream of new companions needing characterization.
>>
>>37045852
Lann speaks up, though her voice seems small amongst the trees.
"That's how most people live their lives. They do what they can."
"Hmmmmmmmm. Perhaps. The forest remains. Life continues. I see a spider, a wolf, a moth, a bird. History is repeating itself."

His antlered head swings back around again, gazing down at your half-elven friend.
"But you are new. Time moves on. We will see."

The moss is growing brighter, the blue giving way to something nearly white. The trees open up, and you find yourself surrounded by stones- each sitting in a shallow pool, moss lighting every pillar.

"The hydras-"
"Yes?"
"You said they came from somewhere else, yes?"
"Indeed. They are born in the heart of the swamp. Disgusting, sickly creatures. The forest ill needs a beast that poisons the ground i walks upon."
"What do you think is chasing them out? Will they be a problem?"

"There are not many of them. They eat. And that is all. They eat, and more heads are born, until there is nothing left. It was likely chased from the swamp by another of its misbegotten kind."
"What can we do?"

He turns again, pace slowing. You think he might be smiling beneath his mask.
"The forest is our concern, little one. We will see to them, that their blood does not fallow our home."
"Ah-"
"We are here."

One stone stands above the others, wide bottomed, its peak closing to a rounded point. Moss forms shapes and letter you don't recognize over its surface, giving off a stark light in the eternal twilight of the canopy.

To be fair we're only seeing things from Lyra's perspective without knowing how our party interact with each other when not interacting with Lyra. I'm sure they do, the problem is more we as readers don't see as much from them.

I'm fairly certain Sheszka would rather die in the most horrific fashion around than do anything to harm her Alpha and pack, as they are very much her own family after her first pack was slaughtered.

Call it morbid curiosity but now I want to know.

What is the unpleasant sounding quest?
>>
>>37046428

After the Alpha dies, there IS no more pack.

And do you really think that the most savage of the known forest races, the greatest degenerates barring the Lizards would allow a rival pack to live after they just took over their hunting grounds?

No, they are exterminated.
>>
>>37046179
Wait what? Did Jager go rogue?
>>
>>37046521
>the greatest degenerates barring the Lizards
Thats a exaggeration by far. The werewolves arn't degenarted like the Lizards, they are just very competitive, and have been even during the city days.
Its true that there is no more pack without the Alpha, but we don't actually know if they subsumed them, kill them or drive them out, which is pretty much a death sentence by itself.
>>
>>37046467
It's not so much unpleasant, as things got a bit out of hand with one character, though I don't recall it being quite as bad as described by one anon here.

Hollows from Bleach.

They are soul-eating monsters that cannot be seen by humans unless they have powerful souls and call a dimension of endless white sand and dead trees lorded over by a black sky with a single ridiculously huge moon and no stars.

I second this motion. It is rude to eat up REQM's bandwidth while chatting about another quest. Either qtg or a new thread would be ideal.

>>37046687
you know, the image suggests waifus and harem
but all i got from the first 10 or 15 or so first threads was way too much edge
is the picture misleading, or does it eventually cut down the edgy and turn into a waifu harem quest?
>>
>>37046799

The edge is the joke, the main character is basically what you get when you mix Sheogorath with that fucking cat from Alice in Wonderland.
>>
You're at his side in an instant, despite the protests from your behind at your sudden surge of speed.
"Is there anything I can do? You can help her, yes?"

You can't stop your hands from twining, fretting as you try to lean around the wendigo.

His head pulls back with a creak, and he looks down at you with a snort.
"I will see her well, spider. And you will wait."
"But-"
"You can heal?"
"No-"
"Can you call the forest? The spirits?"
"I haven't tried."

His laughter is a gale, throwing his head back as his body heaves beneath his cloak.
"Haaaa.... Yes. There is the spider. Sit, Little one. Wait. Your friend will be well. There was a pact before your city rose, and we will honour it until the forest is dust on the winds."

You grumble a bit, feeling antsy and out of place, before you pick a spot next to a pool and plant yourself. Sara drops next to you, pulling your hand free from the other and taking it in her own.
"She will be fine, yes? We made it."

You throw your other hand up.
"I- I cannot sit still. Not like this. I just want her to be safe, yes?"
"And she will be. You just have to wait, Lyra."
"Ngngh."

Sara twists her lips into a smirk.
"Elle is right, you know."
"Right about what?"
"About you."

"Me?"
"Yes. That you'd go mad if you weren't doing something. That you spend every waking moment going as fast as you can."
"I don't do that."
There is a litany of dissent from your back.

Lann intercedes.
"Do you spend a day relaxing or do you punch a giant monster and then relax?"
"I think you are all ganging up on me, and this is very unfair, yes."

Nin giggles along with Jin, and Sara shakes her head.
"Just wait, Lyra. Sit and breathe. Here- We will help you with your hair, yes?"
"What do you-"
"Sit."

You grumble, but you let them take pull your ribbon free, your hair cascading down your back the second it's let loose.
"We should cut it short. There was a moth from the village who-"
"I want to see a braid, yes? Sefi tried to show me, but her claws-"

that isn't how jokes work. If it was meant as a parody it failed because it is played straight without a hint of humor. Furthermore, even if it was a parody, jokes become stale if overused. and at over 100 threads its definitely in the "too fucking long for a joke" territory.

It's a fancy way of saying that we need to put plates in her armor at strategic places. These plates would be clay ceramic with a taut, metal fiber mesh inserted during the solidifying process. That is something Lyra could do. However, I agree she probably knows nothing of ceramics, tensioned or no.

"Braids are fine, yes. If someone is to cut my hair, I would like that they know what they are doing."

Lann laughs.
"C'mere, birdbutt, I'll show you what a braid looks like."
"My butt is a normal butt, yes."

More laughter.
"Straight ahead, Lyra."
"Yes, yes."

The air behind you is full of whispering, giggling. There's tugs at your hair, gentle pulls, fingers sweeping through it's length.

"This is kinda ridiculous, isn't it?"
"Yes."
"Aren't you, like, a month old?"
"Older."
"How did you manage to get your hair like this, then? It'd take years, usually."

You shrug.
"It grew with me, yes?"
"I know girls who would kill to wake up a little older, with hair all the way down their back."
"Everyone wakes wakes up a little older, yes?"
"Ha."

"And besides, how many people do you know would want to wake up with a giant skull on their butt?"
"Well-"
"I like your skull, Lyra."
"Thank you, Jin."

"Fair enough, I guess. You wanna take a look now?"

You lean out over the water- as still as it is, it makes for a decent mirror.
You hair is partially trapped in a thick braid- The remnant still spills across your back though not nearly as long, and kept in place by the winding locks. There's a few strands left falling from your bangs, and you tuck them behind your ear absent-mindedly.

"It looks nice, yes? Thank you."
"You're welcome."
Sara chimes in.
"I was watching, yes? I can do it next time!"

You nod along with their chatter, looking up as the wendigo blots out the lights of his moss.

"Your friend is resting, little spider. The heat has passed. She will be well."
The relief is palpable- Your shoulders relax, letting themselves free of a knot they've carried all week.

You bow your head, a slow sigh escaping your lips.
"Thank you. For saving her, yes."

"Mm. It is our oath, little spider. You would not be turned away. She needs rest for now, though. And I am interested in how you came so far into these woods without finding any of my kin."

"The rest?"
"Yes."
"A day. Less. She should be awake by tomorrow."

You lean back across your skull.

You try to, anyway. That's where Lann is sitting, so it doesn't really work. At all.
People laugh at you though, so you have that.

"And your trip, little spider? You made it quite far into our woods."
"Ah. We were worried about monsters and such, yes? There was a rather large one last night."
"You came through the circle, then?"
"Yes? I do not know what that is."

"A ring around our woods, where the monsters live."
"There was definitely monsters, yes."
"It was a bear!"
"A giant bear, yes."

"And you managed to escape?"
"No, we killed it."

The golden eyes get wider as he turns to face you.
He studies you carefully, from your skull to your face.

"No, no- Little one, how old are you?"
"A month and a... half? Just shy? I was keeping track, but I have been distracted, yes."
"And you have already changed?"
"Twice, yes."

The skull tilts back a little farther, making it seem like he has raised his eyebrows.
You aren't sure he has any.

"That is... very strange, fate-spinner."
"Sheszka and Jin have done the same, yes"

He perches his head in his hand, thinking.
"Hnnnn. So you came through the circle, then."
You nod.
He changed the subject, not you.

"We went into the trees, yes? To stay out of sight. And reach."
"And you didn't come down?"
"We weren't sure what the moss was. So we kept going. Do you mind if I ask?"
"The moss?"
>>
>>37049084

You nod again.
"Yes."
"A bit of light, a bit of pride."
"Pride?"

"It is one of the most delicate plants of the forest- and the better cared for, the purer the light."
You blink, looking around at the white glowing moss on the stones.
"So this is..."

"I am very, very old, little spider. And I have watched over my garden for a long time. Perhaps in a century or two the blue will fade into a proper white. With time and care. It is something to look forwards too."
"Ah-"
"In any case- It is late now. Your friend is beneath the hollowed tree, if you wish to join her. The light will not fade, but it is dimmer below."

"Thank you. For everything, yes."
"Mmm. perhaps I will be thanking you, in time. Take your rest, children. I imagine you will be very busy in the days to come."

You scuttle over to the patch of shadow, beneath the long dead wood- Sheszka is resting, wrapped in her blanket still. She's warm, but no more than she should be- Her breathing steady, chest rising and falling without the stutter of a cough.
You settle down next to her, and your friends make themselves comfortable as best they can, spreading blankets all around.

Despite the light, it isn't long before you fall asleep.

There's been a little bit of talk about ceramics in thread. Would Lyra honestly have any clue on that? I mean, she is from the future, but increases in the body of human knowledge often make basic knowledge in assembly and manufacture limited due to the presence of very complex production infrastructure making such knowledge unnecessary.

Also, thanks for running and Happy New Year.

Aluminum is derived from bauxite ore through a fairly complex chemical and smelting process. Replicating that process without specific prior knowledge might be more difficult than finding an unoxidized vein of pure aluminum
>>
>>37050197
We got forge and earth control, as long as there is a aluminium deposit, we can probably get it out with enough skill in those.
>>
>>37050128
But we're already smothering her in headpats in front of everyone!
>>
>>37050197
>more difficult than finding an unoxidized vein of pure aluminum

Unlikely, considering prior to the 20th century, aluminium was super rare and more valuable than platinum or gold.

Then again, that was the case on Earth. REQM could pull a Korra and say something is actually super common in this world.
>>
>>37050197
I thought the key was running a powerful electric current through the molten ore, with the process being relatively straightforward after that.
>>
>>37050315

That is true when you achieve the alumina stage from the Bayer process, which is chemical in nature. We might be able to magic bauxite into aluminum, of course.
>>
>>37050476

It is fun to note that alumina is a key component, along with silicon carbide, in the production of SAPI (ceramic plate inserts for soft body armor). Unfortunately, most specific dopent formulas and admixtures seem to be proprietary. Still, metal inserts are a good fall back.
