You are John James Green, mutant vagrant.

Not five minutes ago, you woke up in your friend’s basement after passing out in the street. You can hear his footsteps slamming against the wooden flooring upstairs as he runs up toward the second floor, presumably to his room.

Huh. When he said he had stuff to do, you presumed he meant ‘outside stuff’. Like school, for example.

You can’t help but get the feeling that Peter is hiding something from you.

“We should follow him.” You say, quietly, as if sounding out the idea to yourself. You’re not sure how comfortable you are with spying on a friend, but you know something’s up here. “I think there’s more to this whole thing than he’s letting on.”

You make your way to the stairs, but stop on the first step when you realize that Laura hasn’t moved. In fact, she hasn’t said anything much since you woke up. You turn around, as if to ask whether she’s coming, and she doesn’t budge an inch. Her stare remains centered upon you, frozen in a single, rictus state of obtuse silence, the slow, ordered rhythm of her breath providing its only punctuation.

“How can you live like this?” She says, eventually, her voice low.

>[X] What does she mean?

The silence is deafening. You feel yourself edge, just minutely, toward the exit, your hackles rising as if in response to an encroaching predator. In the absence of anything spoken, your breath seems to shimmer in the air, its patterns digging into your ears, loud and obnoxious, each inhalation seeming to taunt you. You’re wasting time. You’re not sure what to say. You feel the moment lengthen, dragging torturously, crawling onward and onward and onward...

“I…” You swallow. “I’m not sure…”

You roll your shoulders, and find it in yourself to pull off a little shrug.

“What do you mean?”

She studies in silence for a moment. Her brow falls minutely – it’s barely noticeable, but you catch it.

At long last, she opens her mouth, and:

“I have a high tolerance for pain.” Raw feet on snow. Torn flesh. Arm bent backwards and split like the trunk of a tree. These are the images that swim back to you. “Still, I try to avoid it when possible. I find it extremely frightening.”

‘Frightening’. That’s not a word you’ve heard Laura use before.

“Do you not feel the same way?” She steps forward slightly. “You seem to actively seek out injury. Do you enjoy being hurt? If not, how can you live like this?”

Actually I was thinking drop her in a vat of molten ademantium, but as long as galactus, the kree, the shiari, skrulls, stark tech assets, nova corp etc. aren't operating in whatever direction we launch her I guess space would be a viable drop off point. Good luck throwing her into the sun without someone rescuing her though.

>(1/2)

Well. What do you say to that?

“I…” You want to run away. It’d be easy, too. Flip the switch, fade away, be gone. Forever. You tug nervously at the hem of your coat. Why does she want to know, anyway? You’re fine. You’re alive. You’ve survived everything the world has thrown at you. You can survive everything again, if you have to. “…I lost the most precious person to me because I couldn’t do anything…”

The words tumble out, like nettles upon your tongue, like something poisonous, and deep down, you feel the question rising. Can you survive everything again? Could you do the last four years again? Or are you too tired for that?

How much strength do you have left in you? Sometimes – when you’re happy, when you’re angry, when you’re with your friends – you feel like you have all the strength in the world. But sometimes you only feel cold, and tired, and like there’s no end to anything in sight.

“It’s better that I get hurt than other people. They matter.”

That’s what it comes down to, isn’t it? You don’t matter. There isn’t even much of you left.

It’s quiet for a little while after. You feel like you’re digesting what you just said nearly as much as Laura is. Eventually, she steps a little closer, and glides the tips of her fingers over yours, her eyes fixating upon the point of contact. You flinch – you feel her pulse firing, even through your gloves, even through her gloves.
>>
>>37063653
He might, but I think he prayed to him in one thread, and after the encounter with the veritable demon I could see JJ wonder
>>
>(2/2)

Her eyes turn up towards you, bright and green and bewildering.

“Why?” What? What does she… “Why do other people matter more than you do?”

“I…” You fumble nervously at the back of your neck. “…I don’t really know.”

She stares. Her eyes bore into you, almost accusingly.

“So far, you have relied upon your ability to adapt to survive.” You blink, wondering where she’s going with this. “What will happen when you can no longer change fast enough?”

You don’t answer. You think you both know.

Minty Fresh Mutant Quest
>>
>>37063678
>[ ] Rest a while in Peter's basement

>>
>[X] Rest a while.

Though it feels like it could go on forever, the moment eventually passes, and you spend the next hour or so just stewing in Peter’s basement, feeling a little awkward and very out of place. As you knead at the sore, freshly-knitted flesh near the base of your neck, you realize, to no small surprise, that there’s a long streak of rough, almost scale-like skin tracing its way down your shoulder blade, parallel to your spine.

You reach back, your stomach churning a little. More surprises? You’ve had enough, thanks. More than enough.

“Peter and I have also noticed that.” Laura’s voice interrupts the silence, and you glance up at her, feeling almost like you’ve been caught in some secretive, unhygienic act. She’s watching you from the other side of the room, leaning back against Peter’s work desk. “There is another patch on the opposite side of your back.”

So there is.

Huh.

“That’s… that’s weird.”

Yes, that is very weird.

Mutation. Change. How fast can you keep changing like this?

It sort of… you sort of remember your dad saying something about this, once. Something…

“Heat and pressure are the prime catalysts of change.” You mouth the words in silence, long-tattered strips of memory flowing back to you. “This applies to chemistry, biology, and to life in general.”

You remember the smell of the Bunsen burner. The goggles he made you wear – he had to adjust the straps for you, to fit your head. The deep, tantalizing flourish of indigo fire. You remember something flashing and sparking, momentary flowers of red and green and blue. A smell like acid.

Huh.

In like thread 6 or something.
>>
>[X] Lots of stuff.

With a minty mouthful of Peter’s toothpaste on your breath (he may want to dispose of that toothbrush…), you head out, using your invisibility to slip away without giving Peter’s aunt a heart attack.

Queens is kinda quiet. The constant murmur of the city seems somewhat lower than usual, like it’s coming to you in long, drawn-out breaths.

You wait until you hit somewhere less… residential… before stopping for a bite to eat. Thinking about your dad sorta brought back the breakfasts of old – it was always light stuff, croissants and such. You don’t find croissants (this is Queens, not Paris), but you do find somewhere that sells these baguettes stuffed with all sorts of cheese and rabbit food an’ stuff. Usually you’d balk at the lack of meat, but… eh. Nostalgia.

Following a familiar route home, you pick up a paper, leafing through it.

There’s nothing about the return of the Green Goblin – that must be old news by now. There is, however, something about Spider-Man. Apparently he was fighting some kinda weird, viscous black creature in the streets of Manhattan yesterday. Your exploits get a mention on the fourth page, topped off with a bunch of insipid quotes by some guy called ‘Flash’. Apparently Harry wasn’t available for comment.

What dominates the front page, however, is a statement by police that the granddaughter of known crime-lord Silvio Manfredi has been confirmed as missing, possibly kidnapped.

Damn, that’s messed up. Your thoughts immediately turn the assortment of assholes gathered at the White Rose Gala. Which one, you wonder, was most likely to get excessively personal this way?

No one (we know of) ever tried that.
Assuming his powers are some form of telepathy it should work, though probably not with a handheld camera.

Why not?
As far as I remember, his power is causing people not to notice/acknowledge him, but he can't do shit about being recorded.
I don't remember if he avoids cameras because they're recorded, or because the security would see him, but I think if the latter wasn't a concern then he could just wear a bodysuit with tons of masks and waltz into anywhere.
A security camera is just a handheld one, except the screen is farther away.

>[X] Stuff.

Furling the paper away under your jacket (you love having all those folds… it’s like being a bear. A giant bear with pockets sort of dug into its blubber), you make your way back to the Scar. You’ve been meaning to check out those guys camped out near your den, make sure they’re not a bunch of Jack-dropping freakheads or whatever.

The snow falls lightly through the air, fading almost as soon as it hits the pavement. You watch the Laura’s braid as it dances back and forth, a drop of bright, unrestrained colour in the endless, static grey. Her steps are like those of a spirit visiting the Earth, barely disturbing the thin sheet of snow that the Scar has yet to fully give up. You feel a pulsing, sanguine sort of heat grow in your chest and your cheeks, the blood tunneling fast and hard through your veins, like fire in the moment of catching.

“Is something wrong?”

She’s turned back to you, her eyes wide and questioning.

“N-no.” You cough a bit, mostly to hide your embarrassment. “It’s nothing.”

You want to say something, you realize. You want to whisper something in her ear. You want to move your hands through her hair, and along her neck, and definitely down that bit where her back trails off, whatever that’s called.

You don’t, though, and instead you just sauna yourself in that bigass coat of yours for the rest of the walk.

As you approach the cracked, battered slope of felled apartment buildings where you spotted the fire earlier, you notice a figure emerging from the tear in its side. They glance your way, just a shadow against the snow at this distance, and hurry off in the opposite direction. Huh.

Well, time to meet these people.

Well yeah, we wouldn't know where to aim if he didn't want us to, but if he reveals himself or we just catch him accidentally, or go into his liar with a camera on at all times?
But alright, I'll take it to his ask later, once I catch up.
I've also been thinking, just because we can't notice HIM, does that mean we can't notice his footprints and the vibrations in the air around a person, since those are not directly linked to him, just anomalies?

>[X] Roll in.

Guess you should head in through the front door?

Not that there’s a door. Or a ‘front’, really.

As you head in, you can’t help but be reminded of one of a thousand scenes from too many action flicks to count – you look up, and the way the entire complex is cut cleanly in half has you right there at the end of The Last Crusade. It’s like a tiny ravine cut into the side of a mountain, except here the mountain is all toppled plaster and rebar and tons of precarious, blackened apartment building. You sort of wonder why nobody’s living in the rooms further up, but the answer becomes obvious very quickly.

You look back down, but you can still feel them – a host of splayed, scorch-black ghosts, printed upon the walls and ceilings and remaining furniture in thin layers of ash. There must have been hundreds of them.

Laura sticks close as you progress in. You can feel her fists bunching, tendons tightening in readiness.

“It’ll be fine.” You whisper, your reward for which is an odd, over-the shoulder glance. You place a hand on her shoulder, feeling her stiffen up momentarily under your touch, before slowly, steadily, the tension begins to drain away, as if passing from her to you.
>>
>>37065912
>>37065900
Don't worry, if we consider that Laura will realize her feelings at about half the rate JJ did, due to her upbringing, it should only take another 90ish threads. Which is pretty standard for comic books I hear.
>>
>(2/3)

“Who’s there?” It’s a voice like wind tearing over broken glass.

You blink. A quick heat-sweep reveals that there’s five humans and one… something… nearby. There’s a clearing where the ravine cuts off into a veritable wall of collapsed brick and mortar, and you think you can see the lingering warmth of a recently-quashed fire emanating from its center. The place’s inhabitants, however, have scattered throughout the building, taking up positions behind a number of skewed walls.

Slowly, you raise your hands. Non-threatening-like.

“Nobody who wants to hurt anybody.” You say. “I just saw your campfire and wondered who was here. I’m not here to be an ass, don’t worry.”

“John!?” Oh, hey, that’s a familiar voice.

Without hesitation, a face you haven’t seen in some time emerges into the clearing. It’s… that guy. That guy with the psychotic sister. Saul? Sssssssss–

“Sam?” You chance, grimacing a little.

Before you know it, he’s shaking your hand.

“Hey, haven’t seen you in a while.” Yeah… you could say the same. “How you been?”

You’ve been alright.
>>
>>37065925
>>37065900
>>37065912

Considering that JJ is about as subtle as a brick in social situations, Larua will realize what his feelings are on her own in short order, after which probably end up thinking on them herself.
>>
>(3/3)

With Sam out in the open, a few others filter in.

There’s three kids, two of ‘em probably Layla’s age, another looking a bit younger. One of them is sort of weird and see-through, like a ghost, and the other two are clearly twins, their eyes touched by the same red glow and their hair alternating between black and white. Then there’s some twitchy guy with dark hair and some sort of scruffy, emo-punk thing going on around his arms and legs, lots of belts and stuff. He stays some way away, twitching occasionally, spots of fractal light strobing over the crown of his head.

The last one is… a woman, you think? Or the outline of one, at least. She’s vibrating so fast you can’t make out even the slightest detail regarding her expression, though you’d guess from her build that she’s a little younger than you. The air constantly buzzes around her.

“How’s your sister?” Acting like less of a fool, you hope.

He smiles, though it’s a little strained.

“She’s fine. You just missed her, actually.” Oh? So that’s who that was. “She helped us get ahold of these.” He holds up one of those little hand-warmer things. It looks like one of the good ones, too, the ones you can charge in the sun. The horrible little gangster in you can’t help but remark on how bad that is for business – if the Corsairs wanted to make real money, they’d sell cheap ones with battery-lives. “Discount price. I don’t like what the Corsairs are doing, but my momma taught me better than to miss out on a sale.”

Huh. She’s still doing that, then.

Sam invites you to sit down, and you find that they’re not all too badly stocked up here. They’ve got tents, they’ve got little boxes to sit on, they’ve even got a stove almost exactly like the one you dished out for. Sam explains that they get most of it from the Corsairs, though his blurry friend has zoomed out (you don’t think that’s just an expression) for a thing or two, when she’s feeling up for it.

Much like you, these guys don’t have a name or anything like that. They’re not ‘Corsairs’ or ‘Hellions’ or anything. Mostly they’re just a bunch of kids who either can’t or won’t go home.

The youngest kid is called Clarissa. The twins speak small English, apparently, but Laura speaks with them for a while, in whatever whatever language. According to her their names are Karasu and Sojobu, respectively, and they’re very much honored to make your acquaintance. The guy with the excessive belt fetish is another John, and you pretty much glean that he keeps to himself. Sam mentions something about his brain oscillating through different universes, and stuff, but you mostly let that just wash over you. You’re not ready for the implications of different universe. Ms. Outline is the origin of the voice from earlier, and she introduces herself as Agatha Thrawne. Her ‘thing’, according to her, is superspeed. Apparently she can’t quite switch it off.

It just says that a nurse at Midtown High was attacked in her office while tending to a student. She's currently in hospital, and has yet to make a statement regarding the attacker, though the level of damage to her office raises suspicions of superhuman involvement. This would be par for the course at Midtown, which has been attacked by the Green Goblin on no less than two occasions, as well as once by the mysterious 'Lizard'.

>[X] Write in.

You chat a little while longer. Eventually, the conversation turns to Sam’s bother.

“Jay?” He shrugs. “He’s hanging out with those Young X-Men guys. I think he’s got the hots for one of ‘em. Good on him, I guess…”

Jay. In your mind, he’s tied up with that whole awful mess you ran into with the Corsairs. Still, that does remind you:

“Anyone been giving you trouble since then?” You don’t know why you bother asking, really. If people were placing bets, you’d be all in on ‘Yes, Hells yes, trouble is everywhere’. Those exact words. “I heard there’s a bunch of twerps selling Jack around here.”

Did Agatha just flinch a little? It’s hard to tell, what with her being set to vibrate by default.

“Yeah…” Sam’s voice darkens. “…Those guys. We’ve run into a bunch of ‘em, not too long back actually. First it was this big, smiley guy with snake eyes and his twitchy girlfriend. Then…” He smiles very slightly “…Bear in mind, I can’t believe I’m saying this. These guys in scarecrow masks rolled up to our last place, ‘bout a day ago. I don’t think they were mutants, either. They bugged out pretty quick when I told them to get lost. It was definitely Jack they were selling, though. I’d recognize that poisonous crap anywhere.”

Huh.

“That’s it?” You ask.

He shrugs.

“What were you expecting? Nobody’s all too”–

Clarissa tugs his arm, apparently wanting to say something.

In total silence, she turns toward the twins, and holds a pair of fingers up next to her head, like horns. The twins nod in extremely creepy unison.

“Ah.” Says Karasu, the girl. “Yes.” Says Sojobu, the guy.

They look at you, and then Laura, and say one word:

“Oni.”

What? You glance up at Laura.

“Oni.” She repeats. “It means ‘demon’.”

Sam breaks the ensuing silence with a long, drawn-out laugh.

“That’s just story.” He ruffles Clarissa’s weird, translucent hair. Apparently she’s not as intangible as she looks. “Nothin’ to it.”

“I dunno about that.” You say, your interest thoroughly peaked. “Seen a lot of weird stuff here.”

Where there’s smoke, there’s fire. And possibly demons.

“Could you tell me a little more about ‘oni’?” You ask, Laura translating into Japanese.

Their stories are halting, vague, and touch on enough of the usual ‘scary things for kids’ buttons that you can see why Sam would relegate this oni figure to the realm of bad dreams and campfire stories. You can’t help but be reminded of your sister being a giant huge jerk (seriously, looking back, her shoulders were pretty big for a girl) and regaling you with stories about skinwalkers, inevitably involving a friend of a friend, a friend of dad’s, or a friend that mysteriously vanished and nobody ever talks about ever, seriously don’t bring it up JJ, don’t be like that.

That said, the last time you almost disregarded kid fears on account of being kid fears, they grabbed you by the neck and almost ate you up. You won’t be doing that again anytime soon.

Oni only moves through the Scar at night. It doesn’t live here, it just comes to find dinner. It’s taller than any man and it has skin like bronze. Its eyes are like pools of cold, ghostly fire, and it makes no sound when it moves. It snatches up mutants and takes them away, because mutants taste better than normal people. Sometimes, when it walks, it doesn’t walk at all, and its feet just glide noiselessly over the snow. It has big, sharp fangs, and it smiles constantly.

Welp.

Feeling your chances of sleep gradually diminishing, you tell the kids that you’ll be sure to watch out for it in future. The last bit of urban myth that Laura translates makes you a little uncomfortable.

“Remember, it only makes a noise when it laughs, so you have to tell jokes when you think it’s near.”

Right…

Slowly but surely, the morning begins to diminish notably toward afternoon, and after a little while spent conversing you check your watch for the time.

>2:34 PM

Ah.

You’re just about to make a move when Sam drags a can of beer from one of the piles of snow nearby, shaking it invitingly.

Hey Crusty, you still interested in Mutation ideas? Cuz I got some.
>>
>[X] Yeah. Just one.

You breathe in, absorbing the crisp, tangy essence of the beverage. That’s not just beer, is it? It smells like… an IPA, possibly? You bet you could totally tell the difference if you got drunk more often. You bet you could sort between brands, if you really made an effort.

When was the last time you had a proper drink, anyhow? Not some horrible swill bought for cheap at Wal-Mart. Something smooth. Something with texture, and warmth, and an appreciable sort of bounce to it. Couldn’t have been too long after you scurried out of Creeper’s shadow.

You and Victoria used to sit out on Creeper’s balcony and drink until the sun went down. You did other things, too, but this is a PG-13 fit of nostalgia.

Beside you, Laura shakes her head in silence, politely declining.

Yeah, you guess that adds up. It’d probably be really for her awkward to sit there while a bunch of better adjusted teens gen drunk around her (lord knows, you know that feeling and a half). But… it wouldn’t be all too polite to just straight-up say no, would it? Not after they went and offered you a drink, out of the sheer goodness of their crusty homeless hearts?

“Yeah, sure.”

You take one, flicking the can open with a flourish of your claws. You’re getting pretty good with those things.

It’ll just be one.

Still looking, but here are the juicy bits about Mr. Shadow. Don't bother looking for more, there isn't any except for that one bit in anon said was in a previous thread.

Does not show up on Echo-vision. (No physical presence?)
You can’t smell him. He has no scent. (yeah)

You see him cut in shades of black and nighttime blue, squatted at the end of your sleeping bag, hunched like a primitive, like a caveman inspecting his flint. The way he stoops to one side, his back arched, reminds you of something your mom showed you, a long time ago – Goya, Saturn, the figure half-submerged in the cavernous void of night, its form muscular and tall, yet somehow wretched. He must be tall, and broad. You can see the curvature of his muscles, see the way they bunch and strain against one another. He faces away from you, his body moving only very slightly, a shock of wild hair upon his head, his hands cupped as if holding something precious, or something sacral. (His colors)

You can’t hear him. Not in the way you usually can. He breathes, quietly and evenly, but he has no pulse. There is no rhythm to his blood. There is no sound as his feet shuffle very slightly against the fabric of the tent. (Fuckin Ghost, too spooky)

“This…” Your words feel like they’re kicking up dust. Like the dark around them is miasmic somehow, and doesn’t appreciate the intrusion of new densities. “…Pretty sure this isn’t your tent.” (Spooky shit)

“Adrenoleukodystrophy-p17adrenomyeloneuropathydemyelinating-metachromaticlysomalautosomal-leukodystrophy-centralnervousystem-cerebrotendineousxanthomatosis”–
(And then pass out, confusion upon waking up. Other anon already noted that they are chemicals and what they do. Med Major here, I can tell you there is a pattern but it's kind of shitty. Probably was meant to convey that the ghosts power is related to his words/chemistry. He is just blathering over cellular biology and the nervous system though. Might be a protein.)

Depends if he does get drunk, frankly i feel she would drag him off well before then, plus, even if its great booze, healing 3 mitigates it enough for us to function reasonably well.

JJ isn't that much of a lightweight for alcohol. Plus he has a (good) healing factor.

I guess we'll have to buy druid power set one by one

shouldn't take long

highest requirement is 2 points

all the other ones is are 1 point.

next thing should be Animal Affinity

FINALLY fill in that last utility slot

I feel the spiderbooty gave agility 5 an unfair advantage. CJ should have given us a full Moore beard if we went Druid.

Personally, I don't think it was Typhon
It was a residual memory, a leftover from when Typhon did his psychic thing. Like a hidden recess inside our mind that only surfaced when something triggered it.
The Beastie Boys.

Next time on HMQ: JJ wonders why Laura is so distant all of a sudden. She refuses to walk next to him, preferring to walk a few steps behind. Mysterious!
>>
>>37068192
Yes, clearly the booty can no-sell all opponents. The Juggernaut will fall before our Taserhands and the Sentinel forces will be struck down by our punching eyes.
Honestly most of our powers are suited for GTFO, which is good because we started as the stealth build.
>>
>>37068192
Think about it this way.

You are now pretty much able to fight Spider-Man, though you're still at a disadvantage in regards to strength and speed.

A lot of characters can still wreck you pretty bad.

There is by no means an infinite number of X-Points, of course, they're just coming much faster now.
>>
>>37068192

>>
>>37068248

>>

Right.. that's still pretty limited. It's a city. Not a nature preserve.

How fast are we compared to Spider-Man?

I know he's stronger, you've answered that question already, but I'm not aware of his speed v.s. JJ's.
>>

oh photo is still on the list, just getting the druid powers will go faster. like 5-6 threads depending on how many X points we get over the next couple of threads.
