So, let's see, news.

With any luck this should be a solid return to our usual schedule, I think the holiday BS is over at work for the most part, but next week may be jacked up still, IDK. At any rate, we'll be normalized within a couple of weeks, haha.

No real news here other than that, so I guess that's good, right? right. haha.

You're not exactly unhappy to see Japan leave sight, the big- and new- C-33 taking off from Misawa air base, in the northern part of Honshu. You'd been ferried there earlier by a pair of IJA Chinook helos, along with the witches and their equipment. The Fandance remained behind- by now, it had attracted more than a little interest from the technical staff, and, last you'd seen of it, they'd had the shattered turbine out of it's housing, and were examining the other.

Of course, your own debriefing was short and to the point, coming sometime after your movie night with the team. You and Merlin had been debriefed together, and while they'd asked some passing details of the mission itself, they'd seemed far more interested on your and Merlin's opinions on the soviet fighter. You'd tried not to let bias flavor your statements.

It fights better damaged, you'd thought, though you'd never suffered damage like that in the wyvern, so it's hard to say. It had certainly performed far better than you'd expected it to with the lost engine, and it's handling was fairly impressive. It accelerated quickly, and it was fast, though still unable to flat outrun those Foxbats, which, honestly, surprised you. It had an unsettling tenancy to want to stick in high angle turns, though, bleeding speed and threatening a stall if a pilot wasn't on top of it. You suspect with VDNI that's less of an issue though, from what you know of it.

1/3
>>
What you don't know of it is rapidly being filled in by Merlin. You get the sneaking suspicion she spent her time with the pararescue team mostly following their young pilot, Laika, whom Merlin said was equipped with it. She's got probably as much information as anyone not specifically briefed into and part of the program can get- maybe more, depending on how much of her ability to talk to machines she used. You wonder, for a second, what talking to an implant like that would be like, anyway.

“S-See?” She says, pointing to a sketched diagram. “I-it's only kind of i-invasive, t-there's nothing in y-your brain, just t-the port at the top of the s-spinal column. A-and they said t-the newer ones t-they were working on were l-less than that e-even!”

“Still sounds like anyone who got it would be down for months, plus the time to re-learn how to fly.” You point out. She shakes her head. “S-She said it's intuitive. O-once you start l-learning, you l-learn faster the more you u-use it.” She edges marginally closer to you in her seat, pointing. “S-see? I-I bet if w-we got it, we w-wouldn't even have to leave the front.”

2/3
>>
You scowl. “Who's to say we need it?” You ask. “We've been doing pretty well without it.”

She nods. “B-but you saw how L-laika could control her fighter. W-we'd have problems matching t-that.”

“I saw,” You say, “How her avionics were giving her fits.” Merlin's right, though- the girl's control of her fighter was amazingly precise. You'd struggle to do that, assuming it was even possible for you.

Merlin shrugs. “T-Teething problems in a new fighter. A-all planes are like that, and Laika s-showed how good the VDNI is b-by not falling out of the sky w-when it happened.”

You nod. “Yeah, but the Wyvern never had them.”

“F-Frank, the Wyvern had me.” She says. “A-And if we got it, I'd be a-able to handle everything better. A-and you saw what she could d-do with that plane.”

“Right.” You say. “But it's an all or nothing deal, right? If you get it, I have to? Or if I get it you have to?”

She nods. “Y-yes. But would it be s-so bad? T-they'd never be able to s-split us up-”

“Is that what this is about?” You ask. She shakes her head violently.

“N-no!” She says. “F-Frank I just t-think this is a chance we'd be s-silly to miss. I-it could help you too. I-if you were able to control the p-plane better, maybe you wouldn't have to p-push so hard?”

If we get it won't we be doing even more crazy shit, that will kill us faster? I'd understand if we have better control that may mitigate how hard we have to push and thus do less damage to us but I'm still skeptical. Either way getting the others opinions on it won't hurt, they might see something we don't. Best night of the Week!

Great, another thread I'm going to miss because timezones are a thing.

I'm rather sorely tempted to repost the thing I wrote at the end of the last thread for feedback but iirc posting writefaggotry while the QM's running is in poor taste. If anyone wants to check it out, they know where to find it. Spoiler'd for off-topic.

Also I thought MiG-25s were the Foxbats, not the 31s, unless Wikipedia's been lying to me all this time.

[x] Let's sit on it till we get back, we can see what the others think.

You shrug. “Maybe,” You admit. “But let's sit on this till we get back, we can see what the others think.”

Part of you wants to go for it, even after you answer- she's got a point, it really will push you that much closer to being completely unstoppable, or moreso than you already are, at this point.

The problem, as you see it, isn't in the increased capability the system offers, it's in just how many unknowns there are in it. The phrase “potential health risks”, for example, has you kind of leery. Even though you do trust Merlin, there's just too much about it you don't know for it to be worth the risk, at least not without getting some further input.

Merlin, though, nods, accepting your answer. “O-Ok Frank.” She says, closing the binder up. “W-we can wait. I bet t-they won't like it t-though.”

“What makes you say that?” You ask.

She shakes her head. “T-They'll say there's too m-much risk. We d-don't know enough. T-They don't trust m-me like you do.”

You grin, wrapping an arm around her shoulders and pulling her close for a sort of one-armed hug. “That's cos they don't fly with you kiddo. Their loss.”

1/2
>>
She nods. “S-so, did you see the XF-19's w-weapons?” She asks, smiling.

“Kinda.” You say. “Looked like stuff we've had on the Wyvern for a while though.”

She nods. “I-it is, mostly. T-the burst missiles are new, though.”

“Sure, but they seemed awful big for our bays.” You point out. “Could we even carry them?”

“R-Right now?” Merlin asks, and you nod. “N-no. Well, maybe in the c-centerline bay, but only one.”

“So we're better off with what we already have?” You ask. She nods again.

“Y-yeah.” She says, around a yawn. “I-I'm going to take a nap, frank.” She says, leaning over to rest her head against your side, your arm still around her shoulders. She leans forward for a second to dig in her flight bag, and pulls out a poncho liner, which she drapes over herself and Yawns again, taking off her glasses and putting them in a case in her bag.

[x] She's got the right idea, I could do with some shut eye too.

You consider, for a while, getting up and stretching, then change your mind. For one, Merlin's busily using you as a pillow, and for two, she's got the right idea. You arrived at the European front too late to get the real hell of it, the no sleep, constant alerts, heel to toe missions constantly, but if the operations tempo picks up, you know what kind of premium there can be on quality sack time.

So you adjust the best you can to make yourself comfortable, carefully shifting in your seat so as to not disturb Merlin. You've got a bit more practice with this kind of thing, thankfully- with grandparents scattered across north America, you logged plenty of airline hours as a kid. Eventually you drop off to sleep fairly contentedly.

You're not asleep long, it feels like, when you feel the aircraft's attitude shift, nosing down, with a building sink rate. You yawn and open one eye blearily, noting that the weak-pre dawn light there was in Japan has given way to afternoon sunshine as you arrive over the west coast of the US.

You're about to ask where you are when you look out the window next to you- this C-33, like many others, was converted from a passenger liner, and the upper deck seats remain mostly unchanged, though some of the nicer amenities have been removed for the sake of more available weight. Outside the window, the aircraft is suddenly enveloped in cloud, with streaks of water sliding backwards across the glass. Seattle, then, you think- McChord air force base.

I think it's less dissing the 'Cat and more praising the ingenuity of twin-engined fighters that can perform against all disbelief.

Also, yes, the bastards jumped off the plane.
>>
The heavy thump of the wheels hitting the runway is joined by a jolt heavy enough to wake up Merlin, who looks around for a second, then sighs. “W-where are we?” She asks, yawning again.

“Seattle, I think.” You say. “Went through a layer of cloud on landing, and it's raining.”

“I-it doesn't rain only in S-seattle, Frank.” Merlin says, slipping her glasses on. “A-and I'm from here, b-be careful what you say.”

You hold up your hands, laughing. “Sorry, Sorry! I just feel like, you know, if it rains this much, maybe we should invest in an ark, you know?”

“V-very funny.” She responds in a way that indicates it isn't funny at all.

I'm just waiting for them to wearily slump into the lounge with Young waiting on a couch.

>"Well, look at who showed up!"
>"You're alive!?"
>"No thanks to you two cowards. I swear, the plane take a bit of damage and the both of you freak the fuck out. It wasn't even that bad! I regained control just under the clouds. Then the sled was coming around for another go. I won that exchange, by the way."

You're prevented from returning the snark by one of the loadmasters of the bird heading to the front of the upper deck passenger compartment. “Welcome to McChord Air force base!” He says. “We'll be unassing shortly, but before we do, a couple of things. First, Seattle is off limits. They've had some issues with anti-war protesters getting into scuffles with the local guys and girls, and the CG had enough of it. Tacoma's ok, so's Olympia and south, if you feel like going that way.” You see Merlin's face fall at that- her dad, you remember, is an engineer up at the Boeing plant, and she'd probably have liked to see him.

“Second,” The load says, “We'll be turning around and re-loading to head to Andrews, but that'll be a couple hours.” He looks down at his watch. “If you're headed to Europe and don't want to piss a lot of TRANSCOM people off, be back here no later than eighteen local.”

You nod, and look over at Merlin, who doesn't really look happy, but doesn't look too disappointed either. “S-so what should we do, Frank?” She asks. “I-i was going to suggest g-going to see d-dad, but we can't go to s-seattle.”

“Ya can't be getting caught.” Brigitte corrects from her seat a few places in front of you, to the knowing nods of the rest of the witches. “I be goin along if ya go up dere, jes ta make sure ya ok, but jus because dey say ya can't do a ting don't mean ya no be doin it!”

Merlin looks unsure. “I-I don't know... maybe we should just call a-and see if he'd like to m-meet us for food? I'm hungry!”

Brigitte shrugs. “Ya do what right by you, sistah.” She says.

You nod. “Yeah, go ahead and give him a call, kiddo.” You say, remembering her dad. He had a peculiar sense of fashion, as you recall- Cargo shorts and Hawaiian shirts. You suppose it must have something to do with the weather- all this wet probably causes people to go crazy.

Merlin nods, and Brigitte grins. “Well,” She says. “I do no wantin ta be intrudin on mah sistah's famillie, non.”

“Y-you're invited too!” Merlin says, sounding like she's afraid Brigitte feels excluded. Brigitte laughs.

“Non, non. It not be a problem Sam. Maman be fine, she got some tings ta do anyway since we here. You go visit wid your papa, take de baron wid ya. Be makin sure ya remind him o his table manners.”

“hey!” You protest. “My table manners are fine!”

Brigitte laughs. “If ya be tinkin so, Baron.” She says.

It takes a while to finally get permission to start debarking- you've no idea what the big plane was carrying, but it took a while to unload. You step out into the rain on the tarmac, noting that there's no vehicles to carry you to any of the nearby buildings- you're effectively on your own.

“Thanks.” You say, nodding gratefully to him and his driver.

“Hey, no problem brother!” He says, twisiting in his seat to shake your hands. “And, uh. Sisters. Witches?” He asks. Merlin and Brigitte nod. He looks back at you. “Lucky guy. So where to? Hopkins and I got shit better to do.”

“I-is there a phone exchange?” Merlin asks, quietly. “M-my dad lives in S-seattle and I wanted to c-call him.”

The security trooper nods. “Shit yeah there is! Should be empty this time of day too. So, y'all came in on the med flight? You look fine.”

“Yeah.” The security trooper nods. “Guys and girls coming back to the states for their long term treatment and rehab.”

“We get about two a week.” The driver, Hopkins, says. “Little less than that, really, bout one every five days. They treat a lot of 'em over there, the ones coming home are the ones that ain't going back downrange, ya know? Medical discharges.”

“Yeah.” You say, nodding. You try not to think about how close you came to one of those yourself- probably would have caught one, had it not been for your unique situation in regards to Admiral Nixon and the witches.

“Ah, it ain't so bad.” The passenger- who's name you still haven't gotten- says. “Hell, I was a med discharge. Got hit in Poland when the whole thing kicked off, I was with the eleven ACR, ya know?”

“Aw hell, here we go.” Hopkins says, sighing.

“Shit man, the airforce and the squids are takin everybody they can get for security and desk jobs and shit. Ya gotta jump through hoops to get combat again, but I hear it ain't out of the question.”

Well then I hope we say to keep the fact we're here a secret as we've been on secret squirrel shit and it shouldn't get out that we're not actually in Poland.

He shouldn't be right now, we just got back from a classified op, and our name is very recognizable, we're meant to still be in Poland and we don't want that to get out, or the Russians might try something before we can get back.

[x] Lieutenant Frank Bishop, nice to meet ya.

“Lieutenant Commander Frank Bishop.” You say, holding out your hand and getting a very surprised handshake out of the tech Sargent. “Nice to meet ya.”

He looks completely surprised. “Shit, sir, I'm sorry. Didn't recognize ya. So that'd make her-” He looks at Merlin.

“Lieutenant S-Samantha Wells.” She says, nodding.

“Honor to meet ya, ma'am.” He says, nodding. “And-”

“Commander Brigitte La Roux.” Brigitte says. He nods again, clearly not recognizing her name, which, you suspect, is the way she prefers it.

“So all Navy, huh?” He asks. You nod. “Well, that's aight. We can't all be perfect.” He laughs at his joke, right as Hopkins pulls up to the curb and puts the truck in park.

“Here's the phone exchange.” He says. “We'll sit here, like Johnny said, we ain't got shit better to do.”

“Yeah. Besides,” Johns adds. “If something happened to the Eagle and Spirit while they were on base, holy shit, General Greer would have a heart attack. So we're doing our job, too.”

You laugh, having occasionally used the exact same logic.

You have to shuffle around a bit- Merlin was sitting half on the center section, between the seats in back, half in your lap. Probably highly illegal stateside, you think, though who's going to stop an armed Humvee for a traffic violation?

She runs inside, and you sit in relative silence, noting that, in an gun truck like this one, the rain comes in through the turret ring, as well. You hope Merlin doesn't take too long.

Thankfully, she doesn't. “So where are we going?” You ask as she hops back in, electing, this time, to just sit on your lap.

“Y-yelm.” She says.

“Yelm?” Hopkins asks. “Shit, I don't know man, that's kinda far for us-”

“Shit hops, where's your sense of adventure?” Johns asks.

“sides dat, maman goan need some friends down dere while de baron and sam be eatin.” Brigitte says. “Mebby us, we can go to de range and have some fun wid de fifty?”

That, if nothing else, sells them- who wouldn't want to see Brigitte shoot a heavy machine gun?

Well, ok, you amend, what red-blooded American male wouldn't want to see that.

They still end up 'phoning' it in with the radio- you hear more than a few voices calling bullshit, but no one seems to tell them to not go, which is a good sign.

The drive down is surprisingly short, though it still takes a solid twenty minutes- if you want to make it back in time, you won't have more than an hour to eat.

Merlin guides you to the place her dad suggested- a steakhouse. The two of you hop out of the Humvee and Brigitte sticks her head up through the turret ring. “We be back ta pick ya up in an hour, baron.” She says, grinning down at you. “mebby a bit longah, I don't git to play wid de guns like dis too much. Maman be enjoyin herself, might let time get away from her, oui?” She laughs as they drive off- there's vehicle ranges on Ft. Lewis not too far from here, and that's where they're probably headed, relying on Brigitte to keep them out of trouble.

You and Merlin walk in to find the place covered in Boeing memorabilia- pictures on the walls, including one of your visit here, however long ago- you, with Merlin on your shoulders, along with the rest of the Tomcat-E team in front of the fighter. Pictures of engineers in front of Fighters, bombers, the jumbo jet team- this place definatley has a long history with the company.

“Two?” The host asks, pulling two menus out of the pocket on his stand. You shake your head.

“Three, we're waiting for someone.” You say.

He nods, not seeming to recognize either of you. “This way.” he says.

The place is dimly lit, with a faint cloud of smoke hanging just below the rafters and the scent and sound of cooking beef filling it. It's quiet this time of day, well before the lunch rush, and only a few other diners occupy the tables. “Your waitress will be with you in a moment.” He says, showing you to a booth- You take one side, Merlin takes the other.

You don't have to wait long before Merlin's dad- Dr. Wells- and another man, about the same age, enter the building and look around. “Daddy!” merlin cries jumping up and running at him- he catches her hug expertly and smiles.

“Sammy!” He says. “Ah, it's good to see you! Is- Hey! Commander Bishop!”

You can practically feel the eyes in the building shift from the two of them to you.

[] Dr. Wells! Good to see you again.
