You have always wanted to be an emperor. That ambition has burned dimly in the past, tempered by reality. Now the opportunity to realise your ambition has arrived and you are determined not to let it slip. Now is the time to build your empire and become an emperor.

Last Thread: You are Imperator Talon York and you rule your own small empire, but you are not yet the emperor you dream of being… yet. Last thread you managed the hell out of your empire.

Rolls are d20 and the best of the first three posters. I may sometimes ask for more dice to be rolled by each player, but same rules apply otherwise. Please quote the post you are voting for or rolling against. Note there are hard-to-replace points that can be used to offset failures in rolls. Please see the Rules and Mechanics, linked through the GDocs Folder above, for more info and detailed dice rules.

>Ren scene

After your drunken ambling about last night you decide to avoid the main dining room. You tell yourself that it’s not cowardice but intelligence. Kyria seemed to be convinced something had happened (nothing did) and was probably going to blather about it a bit. She seemed the type. Taira and Sala would then get upset that you were avoiding them and the whole thing would blow up. Instead you slipped into one of the smaller dining rooms, thinking about what you might ask the staff for breakfast, and immediately regretted it.

“Ah, Talon,” Tsucchi says when she sees you, turning red and not meeting your eyes.

Her brother doesn’t miss the reaction, eying her silver tails shuffling about nervously behind her, but he merely gives you a neutral look. Great experience tells you that he’s trying awfully hard to hide his reaction but he’s good enough that you can’t tell what that might be.

“It’s odd to see you here this early, Ren,” you say to the fox, noticing the small buffet to the side and motoring towards it. Still better here than the other room – Ren might savage you but he’s only got eight tails.

“I needed to confirm arrangements for additional foxes in the new year so I figured I’d visit my sister and get the news,” he drawls, his tone noticeably deepening when he mentions Tsucchi.

Scowling at her brother, Tsucchi attempts to school her expression. “Don’t be silly, Ren. Besides, you hardly came here to see me. I just interrupted your flirting.”

You can feel Ren’s eyes on you as you pick out some food. The situation seemed quite silly as both you and Ren were noticeably wary of each other despite the innocent content. Tsucchi just seemed to adamantly ignore that fact.

“I wasn’t flirting,” Ren says and you resist the urge to snort. “I was merely being appreciative. I don’t often see dragons that aren’t Sylvian.”

You pause at that and Ren’s eyes snap to you as he spots your weakness. You wonder which dragon he ran into…

I have a new idea for an upgrade to AAs, which I might as well make now given I missed the last two threads.
Basically, give them a small shield for the same arm as their bows so they'd be less fragile in melee.
>>
Seriously people, can we at least not drag Tsucchi into this time honored tradition of douchebaggery and counter-douchebaggery?
I mean, she's sitting right there next to him.
>>
>>37092628
I don't think a small shield is going to make up for the fact that anyone they'll ever end up facing in melee are going to be guys in power armor and they have none.
>>
>>37092407
>1. Don't let him know he rattled you.
>>
>>37092653
Not one on one, no.
But it's relatively cheap, and would at least let them survive longer until reinforcements arrive.

Besides, it would be great if they're ever ambushed by MaA/HMaA, or ift they're fighting shadow beasts on the wall of marie.
>>
>>37092407
1 > 2. Guys, lets just act natural. Ren acts very similar to us. We act natural and cool, He'll act natural and cool.
Fluffy bros 4 life.
>>
>>37092704
They'll still get absolutely trashed by any of those things you listed with shields or not.

On a side note, who do people actually suspect Ren was flirting with?
I don't think it was Lynn because I think she's somewhat likely to just go along Talon's conclusion that Ren is a douchebag.

Not to mention that I'm for some reason more worried that it was Rayza anyways.
It's kind of weird that I'm feeling more protective and territorial of Finn's waifus than of ours.
>>
>>37092828
New dragon
>>
>>37092828
AAs would not get trashed by MaA or HMaA, and the smaller shadow beasts are iirc kind of shit, there's just lots of them.
>>
>>37092828
Aspirational, can we get a list of the Various Waifus we have running around in Harrowmont?
Include Talon's Harem, Finn's Harem, and the people in-between including the women that Mal, Vad and Ren have been seeing.
Lets get to Waifu Deduction stat!
>>
>1. Act natural. Don’t give him the pleasure of knowing you’re worried about him flirting with Lynn.

Oh boy, 3 will be fun but dangerous.

You just play it cool. Sit down as though there isn’t a care in the world. Ignore the probing eyes of the fox chief, the shadow of a grin on his face, and just sit down and not worry about whether he flirted with Caitlyn. You were going to kill him if he did.

“You should mention how badly you got shot down,” Tsucchi says, rolling her eyes at the actions of the two of you. “I swear that Rayza was going to rip your tails off.”

“How was I supposed to know she was going to be so defensive of the elf? I heard he was sleeping with the regent of Farun and a couple of young foxes,” Ren mutters, scowling at nothing as he avoids looking at you.

It’s difficult to hold in the laughter so you just let it out. Rayza had been a little caustic about fluffy tails since Mana and Kuro had started sharing Finn with her. She’s also gotten very caustic over implications that she’s not faithful to Finn, having dropped the whole ‘we can both do what we like’ policy, much to Finn’s confusion. Ren practically jumped into an active volcano.

Tsucchi baps you in the head with one of her tails, giving you a look. “It’s not that amusing. You really should do something about Finn and her.”

“Finn wound up with his harem, he needs to learn to handle them,” you say, and Ren simply snorts in reaction. “Plus, it’s Rayza’s fault for not just admitting she wanted him in the first place. He never would have wandered if she had been a little clearer about her feelings of monogamy.”

“You don’t understand a maiden’s heart, Talon. She wasn’t aware of her feelings.”

“I can safely say that Rayza is no maiden,” you say, before hastily correcting yourself when Ren grins broadly. “She told me. She also made it pretty clear that she was always aiming on keeping Finn. So it really is her fault.”

“You know, I think I appreciate the fact you understand the trials and tribulations of courting many women,” Ren says dryly, still grinning even as Tsucchi shoots him a look that would kill. “Most people seem to think it’s all fun and games and forget that you need to carefully manage the situation to prevent them from blowing up.”

“Or just completely ignore them and have it somehow work out,” Tsucchi says darkly.

“I don’t ignore them. I just manage them from a distance without them realising,” you respond.

The door suddenly creaks open and in steps yet another set of fluffy tails. Noah gives you all a searching gaze as her four black tails shimmer behind her. She’s dressed in that formal silk gown that she wore when you first met her but looks a lot more certain this time. Until she sees you, then she goes to water again.

“Um, I’m not interrupting something?” Noah says, sounding uncertain.

You hadn’t gotten to the bottom of Noah’s cautious behaviour around you – Vad had said she was confident but you’d yet to see that. Unfortunately, Ren’s turned practically thunderous with Noah around and you try not to meet the sharp gaze he’s planting in the side of your head.

The situation looks fraught so you do what any wise man would do in this situation. Get somebody else to handle it. You jab Tsucchi in the side and nod your head towards Noah. Hitting you softly with her tails again, which wouldn’t normally be a punishment if Ren didn’t become more thunderous when he saw it, she sighs and looks at Noah.

“Come in, Noah, and stop being so skittish,” Tsucchi says, giving Vad’s sister an impatient look.

“I’m not being skittish,” Noah says.

“Yes you are. You look like you’re worried you’re going to get eaten,” Tsucchi says.

Eyes bouncing between you and Ren, Noah mumbles, “I might not get eaten but it might not be completely safe.”

Now Ren looks a bit putout from Noah’s reaction. He gives her a wounded look which she steadfastly ignores as she sits down opposite Tsucchi. For her part, Tsucchi gives the two of you an odd look before beginning to giggle madly.

“What? What’s so funny?” Noah asks her, voice getting distinctly angry.

“You’re worried about Talon doing something? Or both of them? The two of them spend most of their time fighting and it’s not like Talon ever does something uninvited,” Tsucchi says, her tails seeming to fan behind both you and Ren

“That’s not what I hear,” Noah mutters, staring at the top of the wooden table.

“Yes, and I bet the young foxes who told you otherwise probably read the books that describe Talon’s anatomy in great depth,” Tsucchi replies dryly.

“How did you get those, by the way?” Ren asks you suddenly, ignoring the two girls as they talk. “It’s rather impressive to have a lot of trash written about you.”

“How should I know? All I know is that fantasy only begins to describe it,” you respond.

Noah scowls. “I only read one of the books.”

“And the fact that Talon didn’t ravage you with his great, mighty oak when you first met him should have told you its accuracy.”

Clearly Tsucchi’s been spending time with Aladria recently. The conversation turns to more normal matters as you eat breakfast, with Noah losing her skittishness. You’re not sure how to feel that she was actively worried you were going to come on to her the entire time.

Talon's not specialised in any particular weapon but he does favour the greatsword - though he got a bigger one with the bigger armour, just as he started using a tower shield over a kite shield. “I’m sure you’ve heard about my run in with the Eastern Winds Trading Company, Ren. I’d appreciate your input, given you probably deal with them a lot,” you ask Ren between munching on the little pork sausages your staff had put out for breakfast.

Tsucchi gives you a smile which completely mismatches her following words, “I do apologise for my figure being the illusion used, Talon.”

“I’m surprised you were fooled,” Ren mutters darkly, giving you and Tsucchi a suspicious look. “In any case, you need to be more careful around the EWTC. They’re an underhanded lot – this looks more like a prank to get your measure. They’ll cater all future dealings towards how you react to them. The fact you missed it the first time also means they’ll try it again, when it matters more.”

“When might that be?”

“During dealing with Pharos or over very specific trades. If you ever find yourself needing to go to Pharos or get something from there then you’ll need to work with them,” Ren says, stealing Tsucchi’s hash brown and ignoring the dark look she gives him. “They’re cutthroat and if they pin you as somebody they can put over a barrel then they will. Fight fire with fire and you’ll be fine.”

“Avoid weakness, in other words.”

“And avoid strong-arming them,” Tsucchi interjects as she wanders back to the table with a plate full of food. “You’ll get a better trade deal but they’ll hold a grudge. Even if it’s fifty years down the track, somebody will remember. There are plenty of foxes and families that stay with the EWTC, so threatening or killing somebody’s grandfather might come back to bite you.”

You sigh, having basically been told not to pick a big fight with the EWTC. You pick at the last of your eggs for a minute while Noah talks to Tsucchi about Vad’s kits. You almost miss Ren’s look of unhappiness during the conversation, as he schools it once he sees you watching.

“What sort of tails do you think they’ll end up with, Ren?” you ask the chief.

“I’d say black normally but there’s a lot of power in them. Probably gold or silver,” he says, shrugging. “Sai seems to be better than the other two, sharper too. She’ll probably get gold if the others get silver.”

“I take it that’s a big deal?”

“They’ll be the first gold tailed foxes to be born outside of Pharos in history,” Tsucchi says. “That will draw a lot of attention. To Vad, especially. He’s noteworthy for his talent rather than his power so people might wonder if that led to the gold tails.”

“Is it genetic? The tail colour, I mean,” you ask, frowning as it doesn’t match what you’ve heard.

“Given Taira’s behaviour, at least partially. My research kind of stalls at that point because it’s hard to get access to the kits of powerful foxes and myself and Tsucchi haven’t had any,” Ren says.

You find it curious that the foxes know so little about themselves. It’s also pretty clear that Taira knows much more but simply doesn’t tell anybody. Honestly, it would be nice if she was a little less playful sometimes.

>Talking to Ren about the clans next.

I’m going to grab some lunch so back in 30min. Bring up anything you want to specifically ask Ren about the clans or incoming foxes.
>>

>>
>>37094198

>>
>>37094318
Me too. But we're going to have to be indirect and untraceable.

Hit 'em where it hurts most, break up their monopoly.
>>
Just a note on the trade company,

a very simple way of dealing with them should they get uppity, without actually breaking any contracts or strong arming them is to just simply bury them under bureaucracy.

example: They import goods from pharos, pharos has fox's hostile to ours, It is therefore in our interest to search the company's vessels for any stow away fox's who may be coming to the TYE to stir up trouble.

Repeat every few blockade points and they will soon regret messing with us compared to normal trade when playing ball. If they use another country, they do not get access to our canal system, and their goods still get searched. Since we are sitting on the best trade route with the most profit, its in their interest to not just sod off.
>>
>>37094357
Make it a fake red-tape bureaucracy. We'll give them the express clearance once they make the trade on our terms.
>>
Ask Ren why he seems to have such a low opinion of Wakato.
>>
>>37094357
They also aren't immune to fines. Ah, the joys of a pliant judicial system.
>>
>>37094398
Since we have no other trade company's with specific special deals who are based in pharos coming to us, they have no grounds to base any complaint off of to use in their case. Meaning we can modify this 'red tape' on a whim until we have to deal with more company's.

>>37094433
Especially if we have them write up a manifest of cargo, and we find out that the cargo does not match the manifest, we can use as a pretense as a smuggling fine.

Funnily enough, if they are efficient as traders to corner the pharos import market, we wont ever lose this power over them, but if they let in competition as protection their bargaining chip degrades. They literally have no way around it.
>>
>>37094198
Information of the Garotte clan loyalists, and how Karise's success is impacting politics there. The Typhoon and Lotus foxes. And how Ren thinks the foxes will react to our Source trick, especially since we'll probably prioritize fluffy tails in our military for obvious reasons, as well as people like Karise who support us.
>>
So, in the interest of random off topic conversation, does anyone have any good ideas for upgrades to FMK, because there does not seem to be any available currently.
>>
>>37094631
I think that might be a product of flight enchantments taking up so much magical real estate that there is room for little else outside of the gauntlets. They command a lot given the level of precision they offer.

So I'd imagine it would be more of compacting and maximizing the efficiency of the flight enchants first, thus freeing up room for new upgrades.

Air brakes?

Seriously, fit their armor with air brake flaps and the internals with G force dampers and you have probably increased their maneuverability by a high margin.

As a monopoly, they are probably already charging the most profitable price possible, probably with some price discrimination as well. Not sure they can increase their prices without reducing profits.

Of course, I'm of the opinion that any action we take against them should first start with us suborning a certain fluffy tailed fox so she gives them bad advice.

If you can make the customers expect a price rise then they'll pay more than they would otherwise, believing that there's no choice. The most profitable price rises from psychological factors. Plus, they might take the profit hit just to screw you over.

>Of course, I'm of the opinion that any action we take against them should first start with us suborning a certain fluffy tailed fox so she gives them bad advice.

a>talking about the clans

“So have you settled in without any problems, Ren? Your clan, too?” you ask Ren, easing into the official matters with some small talk.

“More or less. The township is constructed and quite a few people have been moving into the canal section below,” he says, finishing off Tsucchi’s food while she idly bats at one of his golden tails. “That canal is looking good, too. It makes getting food in and out a breeze, plus my foxes tend to like travelling when not busy. They spend most of their time flitting about here or the Commercia in Vitria.”

“I take it you’re planning to bring more?” you ask.

“Plenty more. Things have worked out well so far. I hope they continue to do so,” he says, eyes turning serious with the last sentence.

“I don’t see any reason why not. I hear that other clans are coming too,” you say.

“Mmm. Most clans are sending over token amounts and Pride is practically moving house,” he says, shrugging. “It’s all going to plan, though I suspect that the Wardens might get a bit antsy once they realise that all of the Pride clan is leaving.”

“You seem certain of that.”

“I have no doubt that you got along with Wakato. He’s a warrior at heart, so you likely appeal to him for that reason,” he says. “At least he was smart enough to just ignore his advisors and talk to you by himself. I worried that you’d meet him in the natural habitat of the curmudgeons that clutter up so much of his clan.”

You frown at that, trying to get a read on Ren. You’re not sure if he’s trusting you with the information, being relaxed because he’s near Tsucchi and Noah or simply playing you so that you’ll happily bring all the foxes over.

“Exactly what makes these ‘advisors’ such a huge problem? Why can’t they just be replaced with people Wakato trusts – he’s a seven-tailed fox with centuries behind him. Surely he has plenty of friends,” you say.

“Surely you know all about the dangers of tainted advisors? The RSK must have no small number of them, corrupting and pushing their own agendas on those that have inherited power,” Ren says.

“The RSK is ruled by a man who rose to great power without any magic and is probably a devil in human form,” you say drly. “Those corrupting and pushing their own agendas are part of the to and fro, ensuring that the cream rises to the top in his kingdom.”

Ren gives you an odd look. “I thought King Fenix was your friend?”

“He is.”

There’s a shift in Ren’s posture as he gives you an assessing gaze. He’s suddenly a lot more alert as he carries on the topic. Both Tsucchi and Noah give you a probing look, too.

“I see. Power is still inherited and there must be many who have taken it for their own indirectly,” he continues.

“Yes, but then it just falls to a different noble family. The land and structures simply changes hands if the inheritor is incompetent or misled,” you explain. “The Gendarmes are a good example of this – Phillias inherited some land and gained more to become a Landgrave. He passes on his skills and talents, personally culling out the advisors and sycophants he doesn’t need. His children develop their own talents and the most suitable would have received the title.”

“In other words, the ability to groom a successor and the ability to just hand over lands and title keeps a check on things. That’s not really the case in the clans – influence doesn’t come from the lands you hold or the foxes you birth, it just comes from age and charisma,” Ren says. “Imagine if you had to step into King Fenix’s position tomorrow, bringing along no advisors.”

“That’s nonsense. Wakato would have old friends,” you protest.

“He’s a seven-tailed fox. Most of his friends probably didn’t grow extra tails and are long dead by now,” Ren says and you blink in surprise. “The vast majority of the foxes that Tsucchi and I grew up with were dead by the time we reached three hundred years of age. That means you find yourself dealing with people who are decades or centuries apart from you in age. Foxes from villages you’ve never visited and never spoken to. You can’t judge their character easily and you don’t know of many of the matters they do.”

You nod at that. It seemed to you that the power structure had no relation to what was actually being done – foxes held political power because they were old, not necessarily because they were trusted. This was problematic because it’s difficult to question somebody who has been around for centuries and nobody else truly knows him.

“So when Wakato took power he stepped into a field of politics he’d never touched, surrounded by people he knew nothing of,” you sum up.

Ren nods. “They also tend to work against him – those foxes the Wardens had in Shropham weren’t directed by the clan head.”

You sigh, not liking the way the Pride clan would potentially be so unreliable. Or the other clans too, for that matter.

“What about Garrotte? Do they have the same problem?” you ask.

Tsucchi snorts. “Hardly. Their problems stem from the ability of Marin to charm a lot of the younger foxes. That and the other six-tail wanted to wrest power from Karise.”

“More or less,” Ren says, smiling slightly. “Karise was too heavily involved in alliance matters to be able to smoothly step in after most of the leadership was beheaded in the Betrayal. A lot of the remaining foxes didn’t know her so they supported the less competent ones. Most of the field agents knew her so they’ve now effectively separated. The fact that the clan doesn’t have many active agents, at least none that actually report to Marin, is causing them some problems. I’m hoping not to step in, but I suspect the clan will either have to split or put Karise as head.”

“You sound happy about that,” you say.

“I am. Karise is reliable, even if she serves you rather than the Alliance now,” he says, shrugging. “So long as we’re working together, which will be the foreseeable future, then there’s no problems with the arrangement.”

That was either a statement of faith by Ren or he’s just playing you. Again, it’s hard to tell.

There was at least one a long time ago where she almost blew up at Talon, shortly after suspecting that Talon and Sarah were having sex.

>4.

You bid farewell to the foxes, leaving Ren and Noah to themselves as Tsucchi follows you out. Judging by her expression, you’re pretty sure that Ren and Noah are probably going to find their way to the embassy rather quickly. You take the opportunity to tease Tsucchi a bit, running your hand lightly through one of her tails. She squeaks a bit, eyes widening as she looks at you but does nothing else, her ears just going flat against her head as she pouts and wanders off in the opposing direction. You glance back in the room and catch Ren glowering at you, before he returns his attention to a very red Noah.

Eh, it was worth it. Ren can just deal.

A few hours later you found yourself sitting on the edge of the reflection pool outside the keep, with Sarah by your side and a small selection of cheeses and meats spread out on the bench between the two of you. Across the courtyard the Order of the Griffin assembled for a mass training session of sorts. A hundred knights in gleaming suits of steel magical plate, with many being a little more extravagant. You picked out Phrace in his new suit of hand-enchanted plate that he’d picked up, a gleaming gold griffin head embossed on the front of it, as he spoke to Grandmaster Lucas of the Order of Black Stone.

You’d been surprised to see the honorary Masters of the Griffin knights here today – Lucas, Toren and several others were present. With the growing numbers of knightly orders in the empire you’d actually limited the number of royal positions to two per city, with three for Vitria being an exception. Most of them appeared to be here, showing unity with the addition of some form of griffin symbolism on their left shoulderplates. You wondered if they were here just to train.

Lynn steps out of the keep, giving you a small wave as she spots you, flanked by Felix and his two friends. Stepping into the middle of the mass of knights she began effortlessly directing them into groups and explaining how the training would take place. You took great amusement from the fact she was the smallest person in the Order but they all followed directions.

“Is it true that Caitlyn beat up all the Masters right after becoming Grandmaster?” Sarah asked you, nibbling on some cheese as she watches the knights line up for shield wall drills.

“She sparred with them. Some of them probably got put in the dirt, though,” you say.

The drills continue for a while as you chat with Sarah.

Order of the Red Hawk:
Commandant: Lionel Hawkens
Lionel Hawkens is Sarah's first cousin, and was a leading member of House Hawken's guard and has always gotten along with Sarah very well. When Imperator Talon expressed frustration at the slow pace that the rangers were catching on, Sarah turned to her cousin, with his childhood pasion of archery, to fix the issue.
The Order of the Red Hawk is largely made up of young nobles and veteran Vitrian AA's, who are given a stipend directly by House Hawkens. Who can well afford it given their brilliant exploitation of recent opportunities (basically, the order is funded by a few instances of insider trading, which isn't considered poor form in this setting).

>1. Talk to Sarah about how she’s splitting her time between Vitria and Harrowmont.

Worth noting that the other main source of house Hawken's increased wealth is military supply contracts. In the aftermath of the Vitrian takeover, Talon didn't really trust any of the other houses to take care of supplying him with the tents, food, pack animals and other incidentals he needed to take the fight to Taour (We rolled kinda terribly on minor houses). Although the situation has regularized since then, the wealth of expirience and practice House Hawkens gathered in the initial days has ensured that they remain the army's favored supplier entirely on their own merits.

You pour some of the wine you’d swiped from Mal’s cellar on the way out, a nice red that should mix well with the salted meats and cheese. Holding your tongue while the knights clatter into each other, only to break into melee, you offer Sarah a glass. She takes it absentmindedly, enraptured by the light brawling of the knights. You can’t help but notice that they’re only using their weapons.

“How are you splitting your workload between Vitria and Harrowmont, Sarah? I’m a bit worried after I was away in Shropham,” you say.

“I’ve learnt a bit from that. With the new office handling the diplomats I’m ensuring that there’s suitable agents to take care of matters here whenever I return to Vitria each quarter,” she explains. “It’s especially important because the time I’m in Vitria is the most important. I think the only quarter I’ll be in Harrowmont at the close of a quarter’s business will be during the harvest. Otherwise I’ll be directing matters in Vitria – there’s been so much work to do with the canal and new business ventures lately. I haven’t seen the city so busy my entire life – my mother’s stories about the revitalisation after the first rebellion are the only thing I can compared it to.”

You smile indulgently as Sarah talks about the wonders of Vitria and how it’s going. Noting the fact that the council is working as intended – Lucas and Spoker have probably become the most powerful people in Vitria after Sarah, having leveraged their age and experience over Aaron Tabeth. You can almost picture the Grand Magister of Pax Vitria being overjoyed with himself for having so explicitly backed you. Lucas worries you, however. Not for his ambition but for the fact that he doesn’t seem like the type to get bogged down in politics. He’s always been rather eager to campaign alongside Toren of the Golden bears.

You watch the individual sparring between the knights while you try to put your thoughts into words. Words that won’t insult or belittle Sarah – she can be a little oversensitive to your criticism at times. It makes for interesting viewing, as Lynn concentrates on the younger knights, literally moving through a line of them as she concentrates on defeating each one as swiftly as possible. You don’t know if she’s trying to teach the basics or is just trying to make the newer knights realise their place, but it’s certainly an effective way to let the experienced knights train on each other. Lucas is sparring with Sir Darren, one of the most promising Griffin knights and Finn’s compatriot. The fight looks like it’s going Darren’s way as he stays close and tries to limit Lucas’ ability to use his axe – which works right up until the point gets the handle underneath Darren’s arm and upends him in an instant, ending the spar.

“Ooh, Sir Lucas is really good,” Sarah says, clapping lightly to herself. “I thought he was going to lose because he lost the initiative but he just finished it so easily.”

“He’s a grandmaster for a reason,” you say. “Speaking of which, I’m a little worried about the amount of time he’s spending on the council of Vitria. I understand he’s the most senior knight with a head for management and politics but I get the feeling his passion is for being a knight, not a politician.”

Sarah looks away from you, picking at some ham. “I know that. It’s just that there’s nobody else. None of the other orders hold the necessary respect.”

“It doesn’t need to be a knight and I’m not saying you need to do anything now, but it’s probably a good idea to talk with him about paring back his responsibilities,” you say. “Eventually you’ll just be able to replace him with your heir. You do plan on having one of those, right?”

Your voice was teasing and a small grin is plastered on your face. Sarah gives you a wicked look in return.

“If you’re suggesting something Talon…” she says, her eyes darting to a rather inappropriate spot on your body.

Before anything more can happen you’re interrupted by Phrace, who says, “Say, Imperator? Are you going to join us? I think it’d be interesting to have you show off a bit in front of the new knights, even us old hands. It’s be awesome to see your talents and not just your power.”

You look up at Phrace, a few other griffin knights trailing behind him to rest. He’s not exactly close but you suspect he didn’t quite read the situation very well. Rayza probably has similar problems. Leaning on his long-handled war hammer, he waits patiently for an answer as he catches his breath from a spar.

“You don’t mind, do you, Sarah?” you ask her.

“Oh no. I’m happy to wait for when you return, hot and heavy,” she says, keeping her voice low and heated.

Phrace either doesn’t hear her or simply becomes temporarily deaf. Any knight who wandered around the keep of Harrowmont had long since learnt to demonstrate no small amount of discretion. You’re also certain that your afternoon is going to be a bit occupied, though not in actual procreation – the contraceptive brew is still active and you’re not sure whether to join Mal in having children just yet. Not with so much turmoil to deal with in the near future. You give Sarah a kiss before stepping out into the middle of the courtyard.

Phrace follows you, shield in one hand and hammer hefted over his shoulder as he towers above you in his armour. “You sure you don’t want to head back in and armour up, sir? We can lend you a weapon but…”

“I won’t need a weapon, Captain,” you say, turning around once in a suitable position.

The sparring has stopped and instead the hundred plus knights in the courtyard form a rough circle around yourself and Phrace. Said knight spins about as he realises he’s alone in the centre of the courtyard with just you. He turns back to you, his expression hard to read behind his helmet but you don’t need to see it to understand his bout of fright.

“You, uh, you sure about this, Imperator?” Phrace asks nervously, lowering his hammer as he raises his guard. “Like, really sure?”

“Whenever you’re ready, Captain. Don’t hold back on my account,” you say lightly, shaking out your muscles but otherwise maintaining a loose stance.

It’s a bit of a nonsensical situation. You’re unarmed and unarmoured, merely wearing some fine clothes suitable for the summer heat. Phrace is a Master of the Griffin knights and probably one of the best fighters that isn’t from another order, and he is hefting an enchanted war hammer and tower shield while wearing a suit of armour big enough even for you. The younger knights to your left chatter amongst themselves, ignoring their grandmaster in front of them as they make some stupid comments about letting your position get to your head. The experienced knights to your right are taking the chance to rest and are mostly all grinning – they know what’s going to happen. The grandmasters from Termina are watching closely, having not seen you in action up close. Phrace, for his part, holds his guard nervously as he considers the best time to attack.

“No time like the present,” he mutters to himself before attacking.

With a lightning fast leap, faster than you expected, Phrace is upon you. His right foot slams into the flagstones before, his hammer low for an upwards sweep. You shift slightly, bringing your hands around but are careful not to show too much. Then, as you expected from his footwork, Phrace deftly shifts his hammer blow to a downwards swing, his left foot hitting the ground right at the apex of his arc, ending the feint. His hammer swings down at you, straight through your guard and surely right into your head. Except being in your guard doesn’t matter.

Your left hand snaps up at the hammer that sailed past it, gripping the handle near the head. With a jerk you pull Phrace off balance and yourself forward and your right fist sails into his helmet with a mighty crash, right over his shield. The clatter of your iron-hard fist on his steel helmet rings throughout the courtyard, followed by the crash of his armour on the flagstones as he collapses from the blow.

You stand up straight, ignoring the slight pain in your fist – shaking it out would ruin your image. The younger knights have stopped chattering even as the experienced knights laugh amongst themselves at the demonstration.

“Not to steal Sir Lynn’s thunder, but I’ll just say a short blurb while Captain Phrace picks himself back up,” you say, enhancing your voice to cover the courtyard easily. “When I was in Shropham, I saw Lucas’ Black Stone knights tear apart a company of mage-knights with their talent and fists. I don’t expect any of you to knock out knights with a bare-handed punch, but there’s more to battle than swinging your sword or axe. Your grandmaster has been manhandling the newbies all afternoon, throwing them this way and that, but I’d suggest you pay closer attention to why. A knight should never be without their weapons, even if it looks like they aren’t.”

You raise your hand to Lynn in recognition and she gives you a bright smile. Then you shake Phrace’s hand once he pulls himself back up. You figure he’ll be just fine, though he gripes a bit about you constantly trying to kill him.

“I hope your hand is still useful,” Sarah says when you return, eying you greedily. “There’s still a lot for it to do.”

Maybe you should have shook out a little of the numbness. Oh well, you’ll have plenty of time to shake it out on the way to your bedroom with Sarah. Afterwards, feeling a little tired, you catch up with Lynn at…

After a quick shower you decide to take a jaunt to the Order of the Griffin guildhall, leaving Sarah dozing on your bed. It sounds odd but you don’t often go the guildhall despite its proximity. Or perhaps because of it – most of the time people come to you. The hall itself is a reminder of how enormous Harrowmont is, with the guildhall being a veritable fortress yet still smaller than the keep itself. The hall towers above the keep, however. The central tower stands above even the inner wall at twenty storeys high, with York Empire flags flying from the battlements atop it. Smaller towers ring the outer wall at fifteen or ten storeys high, used mostly for storage and additional barracks space. The two squires on duty at the front gate salute you as you approach and you return the gesture as you pass through. The knights appear to be resting for the remaining time before dinner, spread out across much of the courtyard and central fountain.

“Coming to see the grandmaster in her roost, Imperator?” one of the veteran knights, Sir Terry, asks you as you pass.

“I take it she’s curled up in her lair?” you respond lightly.

“Probably getting ready for the banquet, I imagine. The Masters are having a big bash for themselves tonight before the order-wide one tomorrow night,” Terry says. “Looking forward to that.”

You make some small talk before making your way into the guildhall proper and to Caitlyn’s office. Curiously, it’s on the fifteenth floor, but with plenty of floor space. You step through the dining hall outside her sitting room, trying not to startle the servants and squires too much, then make your way through some small talk with the few grandmasters lingering outside Lynn’s office. Finally inside, you see Caitlyn hanging up the last of her new armour, the special set that you purchased for her in Ahm. Next to it stands her old set, forged by the dwarves but non-magical. The office itself is sparsely furnished, with just a reinforced window, desk and chair alongside weapon and armour racks.

Lynn hasn’t noticed your entrance yet, toying with her armour instead.

There’s no point visiting Lynn if you’re not going to cuddle, so you slip behind her and give her a huge. You slide your hands around her waist and rest your chin on her head. She leans back into your touch, obviously having sensed you enter. Her hands play along your arms.

“Finished with Sarah? She looked pretty hungry,” Lynn says as she raises one of your hands to her chest. You’re pretty sure Sarah wasn’t the only ‘hungry’ one.

“She’s dozing in my room. I imagine she’ll clean up before dinner,” you say.

“That’s good. I’m sharing with her tonight so I hope you don’t mind if we play a bit before,” she says.

“I didn’t realise she shared with anybody but Undine.”

“I’ve been added to her list, though I think she’s avoiding Gnome and Sala because they’ll outshine her.”

“They’re good partners, so long as they’re not together.”

“Yes, but Sarah just sees their competitive behaviour and worries that they’ll hog your attention,” Lynn says, suddenly drawing away from you and holds her arms out wide. “So, what do you think?”

“That you’re doing a good job. I take it you’ve taken on some new recruits?” you say.

You slip onto the top of her desk, bereft of any clutter as it is. Lynn slips into her chair, playing with your hands as she talks. You note the excellent view of Harrowmont’s courtyard and the reflection pool – as well as Vad’s kits splashing around in it while Ren, Tsucchi and Noah watch them. For such terrible swimmers, those kits love their water.

“That’s right. I figured we could use some more given we have plenty of space,” she says. “It’s a bit of a pain instilling the basics in them. I think I got a bit spoiled with so many soldiers before. I took on quite a few nobles this time and they’ve had to be beaten into shape a bit. I’m not sure I would’ve done it correctly if the other grandmasters hadn’t told me it was normal.”

Lynn’s beaming at you, clearly waiting for your praise. She’s been very active in the Order of the Griffin lately, taking great pride in her work as grandmaster. Like a duck to water, she’s picked up a lot of the work extremely well – better than you expected given her propensity to focus on her own enjoyment.

“You’re doing well, Caitlyn,” you say, taking on a soft and congratulatory tone. “You’ve definitely done well to take the initiative and recruit more. I was a little concerned about how well you’d fill the position at first.”

“Really? I thought the whole tournament was to cement me as grandmaster?” Lynn asks, pouting a bit as you admit your initial lack of faith.

“It was. That was because I wasn’t sure you could be a grandmaster without proving your combat credentials in front of everybody,” you say, slowly moving onto the inspirational part. “You’ve done far more than that. You’re not merely grandmaster because you can fight, Caitlyn. You’re grandmaster because you can manage, lead and inspire the entire order. The other grandmasters didn’t turn up just because you asked them to – they turned up because they respect your position, respect you. You’ve accomplished this.”

If you thought Caitlyn was beaming before, you haven’t really seen her beaming. She’s staring at you wide-eyed in surprise. Then she smiles broadly and makes her happiness pretty clear with a kiss. It would have been a better kiss if she hadn’t tackled you off the desk in doing so – your back hurt, damn it.

“Sorry, I just got a bit caught up,” she says later, pretending to look bashful. “So, can we get back to you praising me?”

“After a break,” you say. “You’ve got a couple of hours before the banquet – let’s relax in the hot springs.”

“Oooh, that sounds good. I wanted to go there earlier but Noah and the fox chief were there. Not really my thing,” she says, following you out the door.

You nod to the grandmasters as you head out of the guildhall. You try not to pick up that particular conversation until you’re in the keep itself, away from both the other knights and the ears of the foxes concerned, as they’re still lingering around the reflection pool, babysitting Vad’s kits.

“I take it they were busy,” you say finally.

“Ren was making Vad extremely unhappy by proxy, yeah,” she says. “Not that he was watching. I don’t think Vad’s realised that Ren’s still sleeping with his sister.”

Given the frequency you’ve seen Ren lingering around the fortress of late, you find that surprising. You’d assumed Ren was teleporting in to see Noah in her new embassy rather regularly, as Tsucchi had mentioned a few times that he stayed there frequently.

Forgetting to ask Corrfax who was in the hot spring leads to you being crash tackled by Sala almost immediately after undressing. That in turn leads to the two girls fighting a bit over you, mostly because Lynn wants more attention.

“We came here so he can praise me,” Caitlyn says, tugging on your side.

“You’re very good at sex,” Sala says brightly, grinning broadly. “Now come on.”

Eventually the two calm down a bit, after some help. Enjoyable help.

“Oh, I heard something interesting from a friend in Malataine, Tallie,” Sala suddenly says, perking up from where she was resting against your chest. “That armour that Finnie brought back is very similar to what their knights wear. I’d thought it was similar to the armour of Basette, and Malataine copied that, but it seems to be a new model. Of course, he also said it didn’t match many of the details – maybe it’s a rogue enchanter from Malataine?”

“Maybe. It might be worth investigating. Where is your friend?”

“Sortaine, actually. He’s part of the extended Leon family and is in one of the mage towers,” she says.

“Why would we be going there?” Caitlyn asks, clearly still in the mood for more but Sala is keeping her occupied even as they chatter.

“The plan was to go to Terrnaine but it might be worth investigating this at the same time. I doubt I’ll be able to enter Malataine without being noticed, however. I suspect they’ve avoided establishing an embassy for a reason,” you say, frowning.

Your frown doesn’t last long as Sala gets bored of holding Lynn back and the two need some more help calming down.

>That’s the thread

Next real thread at 5pm EST on the 2nd Jan. I’ll probably start on Terrnaine Forest then.

I’ll probably look at doing more of the extended social scenes from time to time. I’ll try to restrict them to extended slots, rather than just running for a few hours overtime. I imagine more people will be interested if it’s for a long period of time instead of maybe an hour or two extra.

Siege Archer Design Incoming!

Note: Armor and equipment will have to be made with specific constraints in order to handle the bow's extreme draw power. Addendum: Also very effective Anti-air and Anti armor. Draw back is the reload and the specialized training required to use this beast of a bow and its arrows.

Under Empire tab, sub section Research has the options as of now.

Not sure if there was anything else though, I assume we'll be good for a little bit. Especially if we end up tracking down that rogue enchanter and then enlisting his help. Mmm top tier enchantments.
>>
>>37098862
The problem with armor is that it limits the motion of archers. Knights get around it by having really awesome quality custom made armor AND being muscle wizards. But your average soldier would not.
You need a significant amount of metal to hold an enchantment, so we can't just a ring of strength for them. And a belt would be super bulky and made of steel.

Which made me think of he-man's chest harness. lots of metal criss crossing his chest, it doesn't impede motion at all, and should have sufficient mass to hold a strength boosting enchantment.

That all being said, the siege archers are probably gonna obsolete them

>Yeah, that anon cracked me up a bit.

The hilarious part is you just quoted the same anon who said that. The difference is a matter of scale aspirational. Taira's soul is pure even if her body is defiled by tens of thousands of men and animals.

Tsucchi on the other hand is pure as the driven snow in both spirit and body. I think she just might burn someone as impure as Talon with a touch by this rate. Tails are the exception because tails are never pure.

>That all being said, the siege archers are probably gonna obsolete them

Not necessarily. Arcane Archers have greater range than the siege archers, simply due to the size of their bows combined with the magic. The God-Knights combine both by basically have ballista bows, which are big enough with their frames to use while wearing armour (plus it's really well articulated armour).

>>37099342
There was a reason that Talon was calling him captain still. You gave knighthood and rangerhood to a number of your soldiers who maintained their officer positions which is unorthodox but works just fine. Kind of like how you've got members of the order that are also members of other orders.

>>37099402

Seems interesting how Talons politics are going. On that note how odd would most of the other rulers in the world so far rate how Talon runs things?

Tsucchi: "I never commented on your sex life, Ren. Not when you were sleeping with girls centuries younger than you. Not even when most of the village girls my age could tell stories of their time in bed with you. So don't you dare say a word about mine."

And then Ren shuts the hell up because he knows what's good for him.

Norry? Talon would have gotten along fine with him - he's a professional and wouldn't have taken it seriously. I had a scene prepared where Talon first meets him while babysitting the kits (and hits it off) but didn't do it because it lacked any real importance or important characters.

>On that note how odd would most of the other rulers in the world so far rate how Talon runs things?
He probably appears (rightly) to be more of a military overlord than a traditional king or ruler. A charismatic warrior-king who distances himself from the politics.

well, we literally explicitly stated as such with calling ourselves imperator. Which means "a general who is also an emperor", with justification that we are general first and foremost.

Not so sure. Ember is more about stabbing you in the chest with a lance that can't heal. Raphael uses a item of power+high levels of Flow animation.

That's pretty different then just no selling magic.

Ember has 2 signature weapons named after himself, the lance is just one of those two.

Speaking of Felix, I'm really wondering how we're going to keep that promise to him about slaying a "mad god". Ember is straight up OP.
>>
>>37099870
I don't really consider hallim and enemy. He was pretty chill about things and actually gave us info and let our guys go past to do their thing, he just wanted to wrassle with us mano a mano. I can respect that.
He didn't cross lines with me yet.

Blackwater is an artist. His flair for dramatics both provided us with a bad ass encounter, fun, and actually worked to our favor in terms of tactics. He repeatedly avoided unseemingly tactics that would really hurt and piss us off like focusing on killing the weakest of our retinue, or sabotaging our empire, or letting the songbird daywalker enthrall our troops, or mass nightwalker vamp the populace. He isn't really an enemy either, just someone who managed to escape us with his life while we disassembled his unlife's work who has been staying away since then.
... plus i loved his outfit
>>
>>37099885
>Yeah. The Lance sounds the most dangerous. The other one sounds more like we should play the trogdor the burninator in the background while he uses it.
Anon, the lance is what he would stab talon with. the other one is how he would shut down talon's entire army and get it massacred. Including the hero units.
The lance is by far the less significant weapon.

The big thing is the other one works best in a army battle. If you are strong enough to fight him directly then the Lance is worse just because it only takes one good hit to take you out.

>>37100059
>The big thing is the other one works best in a army battle. If you are strong enough to fight him directly then the Lance is worse just because it only takes one good hit to take you out.
In order to fight him 1v1 you first must occupy or destroy his god knights, of which he has an army of.
So
>You come at him alone
>His army of god knights tears you appart
or
>You come at him with army
>He shuts down your army's magic, his army tears your army apart and then tears you apart
either case you never get close enough to him for him to even have a chance to stab you with his lance.

Hey Aspirational, are Larrya's siblings active? Could we summon them as well? Or have Sarah summon well since she was a candidate to bind Larrya afterall.

Also, why are all Pure Elementals female?
>>
>>37100105
>Also, why are all Pure Elementals female?
I asked that before and he said they aren't, we just happened to encounter female ones so far.
I think maybe each set is the same gender. so you either have 4 sisters or 4 brothers per clutch. but that is just my fanon
>>
>>37100150
we should get sarah to summon one of lyrra's sister then just to make sure she doesn't get a male familiar. because that would be all kinds of awkward.
although, most mages don't actually want a familiar
>>
>>37100087
If you are strong enough to fight him directly you are strong enough to rip a godknight to shreds. Also what do you mean shut down magic? He doesn't so much shut down your magic with his sword as burn your army to shreds with fire.
>>
>>37100171
>If you are strong enough to fight him directly you are strong enough to rip a godknight to shreds
There is a difference between ripping one to shreds and ripping through an army of them

>Also what do you mean shut down magic?
Exactly what I said. Your magic items stop working, your wizards can't cast spells.
Although it seems i misremembered. The gdoc says he summons an enourmos firestorm that has "unmaking" power.
After our last meeting with raphael, it was either raphael or aspir that mentioned life magic can be used to disrupt magic exceptionally well because magic is the source of life, ergo magic IS life, and thus life magic is manipulation of magic itself.
So yea, I did mess up what the sword actually does in retrospect. although that actually makes it even worse. He still annihilates our entire army and then his godknights gangbang the survivors of the firestorm.

Larrya is relatively young, so she only has a fire elemental sister called Surya who is younger than Undine. She's summoned in the League currently.

I'm not srue I ever said they were or weren't, so I'll hold out and possibly make a male one in the future unless somebody can point out where I've said otherwise. There's probably not any particular reason.

If you're talking about Raphael's comments in Shropham, he was simply explaining that his understanding of the flow of magic is different to yours because his control of the flow is tied to his conceptual being (that of Life) whereas Talon's is different - Ember probably is different, too. In other words, Raphael's Life path is different to Talon's Life path. Control of the flow of magic enables disruption for rather obvious reasons but that ability is granted for differing reasons for each individual.

Every astral power path is different per person. The lords seem to rely mostly on item creation is Ember is anything to go by.

the god knights are people, not items

Talking more powerwise there. Ember seems to rely a lot on his weapons and the likes and even the god knights rely on their absurdly powerful armor and bows.

Kind of makes me wonder what the lord of Air is based around doing.

Oops, just realised I contradicted myself with Laryya's sisters. The wind elemental hasn't been created yet, which means there's a water elemental floating about. La's only got a few centuries under her belt (same age as Sala), so the water elemental (let's call her Marea) would probably be about 100 and Surya is about 10-20 and serving her first master. Marea is unsummoned.

>>
>>37100863
you mentioned that a new pure elemental is anchored to her older sisters to accelerate growth
what if the older sisters are currently summoned? is a new batch created instead, with the set only being completed once there are suitable unsommoned ones?
Or does the mage who summoned the older sister suddenly finds himself with a baby elemental as a second familiar one day? (joking aside, not a second familiar but one who is latching on and drawing power from his familiar)

That's not quite how anchoring works. The new elemental doesn't draw on the power of the existing one, it just uses their intrinsic connection to the world to get up and running faster.

When an elemental is created without anchoring (typically only the very first one, but there was an incident where the earth elemental in a batch got killed and the third had to grow up without anchoring) they take a few decades to mature and become available for summoning. This maturation mostly involves curling up in their Place of Power while their soul and body connect with the PoP and the world itself. Later pure elementals get created in their own PoP but the anchoring means they already have a connection to the world through their oldest sibling and only need to spend a few years connecting with their PoP as their soul is already connected to the world. So there's no reason that new elementals can't be created with the others summoned (e.g. Undine was created while all three of her sisters were summoned). Also, all anchoring typically goes to the earth elemental rather than a chain due to the stronger connection to the world that earth elementals have.

FYI, the above means there are three earth pure elementals, four fire, three water and three wind. Plus Undine.

>Wonder how big the blow up would be if he did.

You know it's kind of interesting how Vad and Ren are in a way. He seems sad that he isn't in Vad's kids lives. Which is kind of interesting given how he normally acts.
