You are Mylene, Sith Acolyte, new arrival on Korriban, Chiss, and in that awkward gap between infancy and adolescence. Having found the classroom you were all looking for, you and your fellow acolytes now have no specific excuse why Zakk and Kagg shouldn't get on with their latest grudge match in what's sure to be a long struggle for the coveted status of alpha twin.

"Well then, this won't be hard to find again. You two want to watch us duel, or..?"

There are a few ways you can do this, and the choice, is, yours.

Either we hurt their pride by dismissing them with little to no interest and go do something more productive, or they don't care and let us get a lead in gaining allies.

Win-win if I ever saw it.

You don't see why not; nothing else of real importance to do today, and it makes you look friendly to them whilst also giving you a chance to see their combat skills (or lack thereof, as the case may be?). And it'll probably be entertaining too, can't forget the entertainment value of seeing two obnoxious kids get the snot beaten out of, by each other.

"Sure, let's go."

You look over to Moriana, loitering there all quiet-like. Looks to be at a bit of a loose end, and you figure giving her a specific invitation to come too can't hurt - and maybe enough subtle reinforcement might just get her in the habit of going along with what you say and/or do. Can't hurt to have a habitual ally.

"You should come too."

The girl nods, and the four of you set off, Zakk and Kagg all but racing as they stride away, you close behind, your taciturn companion bringing up the rear.

In a matter of minutes, your group is assembled at a vacant sparring ground immediately outside the main building of the academy. The twins arm themselves from a rack of communal practice sabers, and face off from opposite ends of the field.

"This is where you learn that dumb riddles won't help you on the battlefield, brother." boasts Zakk, powering up his weapon. It hums and emits a dull glow. Kagg follows suit.

"Takes more than a good saber-arm to win a fight, ever heard of tactics?"

The tension is practically palpable.

Nothing really needs to be said, they're already riled up enough anyway, wouldn't serve any purpose to egg them on even more. Similarly, Moriana stays silent, and indeed has put her hood up, covering her face from the admittedly rather harsh Korriban sun.

"Time to put your saber were your mouth is, Kagg. Or if you don't, I will!"

Okay that was actually pretty good, as pre-teen trash-talk goes. With no further ado, Zakk advances, and you note that his form is actually quite solid, a standard Juyo ready stance, not really surprising that he'd default to a heavily aggressive style. Kagg takes a few steps forward, but lets Zakk be the one to close the gap, he himself in what you recognise as Shien form, which, if you're not mistaken, is based largely around defense and counter-attacks. Pretty good foil for Zakk's obviously offense-based strategy.

Before you know it, the gap has been closed, and the twins begin to circle one another, Zakk evidently a little nervous to take the first swing. The proverbial calm before the storm. For his part, Kagg keeps his cool, pacing in time with his brother, but never breaking stance.

And then it begins. No way to begin without it being necessarily rather telegraphed, Zakk swings and meets a rather perfunctory block. He steps back, then launches forth again in a lunging stab, forcing Kagg to fall back as he pushes the oncoming saber aside with his own.

Moriana steps a little close as the two continue to trade blows, ground gained and lost but no advantage really gained as yet.

"Who do you think will win?"

[ ] This is extremely open, just write in.

Isn't Juuyo Form VII? The unfinished Form VII that required extensive know-how from Ataru (Form IV) to pass as usable? I mean, kudos on him for finding someone stupid enough to teach him Form VII, but I'll put my bets on Shien (Form I), which is, if I'm not mistaken, the elementary starter form. I'll go with the guy who sticks to his fundamentals over someone who is clearly showing off.

tl;dr: There are a bunch of lightsaber forms. Juuyo is the incredibly aggressive Form VII. It's really powerful but was never finished and lacks a whole bunch of shit it's supposed to do. People often compliment it with the less aggressive but also very offensive Form IV, which is based around acrobatics. Form VII with a Form IV finish is basically how Darth Maul fought, for the sake of a mental image.

Shien, Form I, is the bare basics of lightsaber combat. Mastering it is mandatory to becoming a Padawan or a Knight, I think? Either one of those, I can't remember off the top of my head. But it's basically the fundamentals of lightsaber combat.

Does that explain things better?

The first thing you begin to notice is that, for all their showy opening stances, neither of the pair really has much knowledge of the forms they're aping. Looks like they're as knowledgeable as you yourself; they've seen what the forms look like, probably from their father, as you have, but that's as far as their expertise goes. Indeed, at this point, Zakk is still being more aggressive and reckloss and Kagg remains defensive and careful, but neither is really sticking to anything you recognise as the fundaments of, well, any formal lightsaber form. More just trading easily-blocked blows and grunting at each other.

"Looks like Kagg's just going to let Zakk wear himself out, then go in for the kill. So I'd bet on him."

Moriana nods sagely, but doesn't add anything. You guess that was her assessment too, or maybe she just agrees with the logic. Hard to say, really, her poker face is really quite good.

Meanwhile, the brothers are beginning to slow down, early enthusiasm and adrenaline wearing off and giving way to stubborn refusal to admit neither of them is actually achieving anything. If anything, it's a little boring to watch, little more than two boys swinging big sticks at each other - just fancier sticks, really. Far from the epic spectacle of fraternal combat you'd sort of hoped for.

Also you're mistaking Shien with Shii-Cho. Shien is form V, effectively a variation on Soresu, replacing some of its focus on endurance with more counterattacks and such. I believe it was Vader's form of choice. Either way they both suck at their respective forms.

As Anakin, he used Form V a lot, yeah. I think that once he got jammed into that heavy suit, which didn't allow him to make any of the movements he typically did, he swapped to...

I think it was Niiman? Form VI, I think it was, supplemented with bits and pieces of Form V and improvised moves based on his now absurd length and weight.

That said, if I'm not mistaken, Form V is the dueling form for lightsabers (that isn't fancy Form II fencing), so I'd still put my money there.

With a sidelong glance to Moriana, you add "If they ever finish swinging at each other like idiots, that is."

After that, well, you cast your eyes elsewhere, looking around the sparring field in search of a more accomplished duel. Mostly acolytes only a year or two older than you, by the looks of things... until...

The blonde human from the dorm. She's dressed in combat armour now, and speaking to someone dressed in rather concealing robes, hard to tell their species or gender, only that they're slightly shorter.

[x] Focus on them
Seems more interesting than watching the other two flail at each other.

I have now read through the basics of the forms!
>>
[ ] Focus on them

Looking a little closer, it becomes more clear that the one in the robes is probably female too. Still can't see their face, though. The robes themselves are quite distinctive, however, mostly black with deep purple trim, shouldn't be hard to identify again in the future. They have a curved-hilted lightsaber at their hip, too. As for the acolyte from before, she seems to be wearing two sabers, now that you get a chance to look closer.

The conversation is clearly rather amicable, too, not any sort of confrontation at least. So much for a chance to see the older student in action.

A nudge from Moriana drags you back to the fight at hand. Kagg finally seems to have started attacking in earnest, properly pushing Zakk onto the defensive now. Both boys seem tired, powered mostly by sheer bloody-minded stubbornness.

"Guess you were right, I think Kagg's really going for it, now."

Quite so, upon closer inspection, looks like Zakk's suffered a few blows, he moves with a slight limp, and he's got a small cut on his right cheek, bleeding ever so slightly.

Man I'm getting lazy at replies, I didn't even greentext that last one, and I misspelled reckless earlier.
>[ ] See how it ends

As the two boys move slowly but surely into the endgame, you notice that Gand and Vorr have showed up to watch at some point, and perhaps more importantly, so has Overseer Galsenn. Zakk lands a glancing blow on Kagg's leg, the latter steps away from the impact as it connects, swings back round into a rather sloppy horizontal swing that Zakk promptly ducks under, then charges forward, driving his shoulder into his brother's belly.

Kagg's footing falters, he's driven back one step, then two, then finally overbalances and drops onto his back. Even as he scrambles to roll aside from the anticipated next strike, Galsenn strides into the fray. With a wave of his hand, Zakk's blade stops mid-swing, and the boy quickly intuits that he's being forcibly stopped. Quite literally forcibly, via telekinesis.

"That's enough."

The glare the twins share could cut flesh, it's so sharply pointed. The I-had-you look from one side, the no-you-damn-well-didn't from the other. Not a word is spoken though, whether out of lack of breath or respect for the Overseer you aren't sure.

Moriana wonders aloud "Do you suppose he did that on purpose?"

Weighing your options, you figure it's best to just observe for now. No sense picking sides for no good reason, being a friend to both twins has served you well so far, at least.

After a short, tense silence, Kagg clambers to his feet, still glaring at Zakk. Zakk, for his part, is now looking daggers at the Overseer. With just a gesture towards the weapon rack, Galsenn directs the two to put their practice sabers back. They acquiesce without argument, still not having said a word since the interruption.

For her part, your companion doesn't add anything else to her question, preferring to stay silent as well, at least until Galsenn approaches.

"I trust you two don't intend on crippling one another before your first classes too?"

The human girl shakes her head. "No, Overseer." Common sense dictates you follow suit.

"Good. You're welcome to practice, but your performance reflects on me, and I will not have my students beat each other into worthlessness before they've even begun their training."

True to form, he's more concerned with discipline than the actual wellbeing of the twins. Though to be fair, neither has shown themselves to be precisely likeable so far.
