Well now, we've reached a rather special stage in the quest. We're on the cusp the endgame here, so we're now at the point where we have to resolve a bunch of dangling plot threads, Loyalty Mission style!

You are MORGAN KALUGINA, a young Russian sniper and an idol for Clover Entertainment!

You've just gotten off a small photoshoot. Just a few glamour shots for the latest winterwear. Apparently, your white hair and pale eyes made perfect shot for thick coats and warm hats. This was a solo job today, so you were actually by yourself, which was rather uncommon since you were usually with at least one of the other idols, or put under the watchful eye of the Producer or Jenner.

Ah, today was a rare day to have a bit of fun on your own! Besides, if the Producer REALLY got worried, he could always just ring you up on Harbinger, or vice versa.

You take a bit of a stroll down the street, grab an ice cream cone, and just relax, taking in the scenery. Through all the windows, you could see various clothes and other goods, now all on sale since the holidays were over and stores needed to unload excess stock.

Perhaps you could get some new clothes yourself. All you had were the shabby casual wear you had brought with you from Russia, and you had a lot of saved up income. Perhaps a wardrobe upgrade was in order.

Maybe even a gift or two for that nice Marine Scout Sniper you met...

Hmmmmm, perhaps some new clothes would be nice. Thankfully, this street simply had no shortage of clothing outlets, giving you no shortage of choice. You spend the next hour or so just going down the lane, buying up whatever you found to your fancy. This was something you could never imagine doing in Russia, what with its drab environment and mood. Everybody there just took things so SERIOUSLY.

Also, the dislike for foreign brands, too. That was also part of it.

You've got all sorts of clothes. Dresses, skirts, simple shirt and jeans, even one of those weird sweaters with a hole in the chest that seems to be all the rage today. You also a got a few dresses of the... "frilly" kind. Not that you would tell anybody...

You pick one rather nice one and head for the dressing rooms...

However, you get the oddest feeling. That sniper sense you never thought you'd feel. That sixth sense telling you something was not quite right. You follow your gut feeling you spin around, just in time to see the glint of a sniper scope.

And you were having such a good day, too.

You twist to the side just as the first bullet hits, punching through the glass window and burying itself into the carpet. No bullet report, not even an echo. None of the other patrons in the store seem to have noticed it. Suppressed shot. You dive behind a clothes rack to further obscure you in case of a follow up shot.

Well, this was problematic.

Eheh, perhaps you should call in backup. Sure, there was the pride thing, but pride could only get you so far before getting you killed.

"Um, Producer?" You say over Harbinger a bit meekly, sounding like an embarrassed schoolgirl. "I think I might need a bit of help..."

"What kind of help?" Producer sighs. "The 'what kind of underwear to buy' help or the 'help I'm getting shot at' help?"

Now that was unfair. There was only one type of underwear you could wear in Russia, and it was the kind that prevented you from freezing to death. You STILL weren't quite used to the pair you were wearing right now.

"The latter." You sigh. "I'm pinned down by a sniper."

"I see." Producer says grimly. "I can get NEMO to drop off your gear. Do you need backup?"

"...Rochelle and Julie." Producer says.

Hm, that was good. Rochelle had a sharp eye and could help you with spotting, and Julie's muscle was always welcome, even if the girl herself was a bit dim witted at times.

"All right, we're heading out." Rochelle says. "NEMO's still in gunship mode. You want to give your attacker a morning surprise before we land?"

Hm, it was tempting, but blowing up a rooftop tended to attract all the wrong kinds of attention. Plus, you had your pride as a sniper to uphold...

"Negative. Let's limit the collateral damage here, Tovarisch." You say. Well, in truth, you really just wanted to best this challenger to your professional pride.

"Roger that, we'll be touching down in the parking lot. Can you make it to the back?"

"Yes." You say and quickly head to the back to store, making sure to keep yourself obscured behind the clothes racks. Nobody seems to have noticed the hole in the window just yet.

You see NEMO touch the Hornet down on the pavement outside, managing to maintain clearance from the parked cars around it. You see Rochelle and Julie, fully geared up, hop out, with Rochelle carrying a large and heavy duffel.

"Special delivery!" She smiles as she tosses the bag to you. You grab it and open it up, revealing your rifle, your jump pack, as well as the rest of your gear. It takes you only a few minutes to get yourself dressed and ready to go.

"NEMO, can you get back in the air and try to spot?" You ask.

"Affirmative!" NEMO says cheerfully.

"So what do we do?" Rochelle asks.

"I'll need to set up on the roof, and I need you to spot for me." You tell Rochelle.

"What about me?" Julie asks.

"Just get ready to move. Once we confirm the shooter's position you go to ambush him." You instruct.

"Ohoho, I like it!" Julie grins as she cracks her knuckles. "You two do your thing, then!"

"Better hold on, Tovarisch." You say to Rochelle as you grab her hand. You then aim your other arm up and fire your grappling line, hooking up to the roof of the store and with a helpful burst from your jump jet, reel yourself up to the roof with Rochelle in tow.

"W-wow, I don't think I'm gonna get used to that." Rochelle sighs.

"It's fun, isn't it?" You chuckle before going prone and setting up your rifle into a firing position as you scan the skyline. You quickly calculate all the possible areas a shooter could have line of site from where you were in the store, but it's a big city, and there's lots of roofs and vantage points. You had to find a way to further narrow the search.

You could have NEMO dive down low to get a closer scan, but that would make her vulnerable to ground fire, but either way, you'd stand a better chance of spotting your shooter.

Or..., you could try drawing their attention toward you and hope your trigger finger was faster.

No, not hope. You trigger finger IS faster.

Wait, weren't there mannequins in the store you were just in? Now you have an idea...

After a quick radio request to Julie, she "procures" a mannequin from the store and you winch it up to the roof with your grappling hook. You then dress it up a bit to resemble you and stick it up in a standing position.

A split second later, the stop half the mannequin explodes into pieces. However, you pale when you see it. Not from the speed or accuracy, but from the number of shots. They happened almost simultaneously, so fast that you were barely even able to register it.

There were THREE shooters.

You heart goes cold. You knew of only one trio of snipers capable of such coordination.

And they were your cousins.

You know how some families can get fucked up when there's a position of power (Murder, assassinations, etc.)?

I think it's either this, or some way of saying that they do not believe that she's fit to lead.
>>
>>37151261
Well, if your family was involved on a hit against you, you had a very good idea of what it must be about. However, you never thought they'd follow you all the way to America...

Not to mention ruining your day and potentially putting your friends at risk. What if Rochelle had been with you? What if she had been standing in just the wrong spot, or if your cousins' aim was just a little off?

Unacceptable.

With a growl, you key your radio to make a short range broadcast.

"I hope you didn't think it would be that easy to kill me, cousins." You say with as much venom and anger as you can manage. "You three came a long way home just to die. Tell me, what brings you here? Perhaps I will spare you my wrath if I like what you tell me."

"Uncle Cherekov believes you are not fit to take over the family." You hear a voice say simply. "He thinks you've been corrupted by American decadence."

"Corrupted?" You scowl. "I assume my father knows nothing of this."

"Of course not, and he never will." A second voice cuts in. "You will die here this day, little cousin. On this, we have staked our pride."

"I got eyes on them. Ready when you are." Rochelle says as she stares at the skyline with her binoculars.

Well, you could do this easy the way and just have Julie and NEMO help you take out your cousins. However, if you REALLY wanted to send a message, you knew you had to take them all out yourself...

You like the fury of the Russian winter. Your first shot hits Viktor in the shoulder, causing him to drop to the ground squirming. Your second shot actually hits Antonin's rifle, shattering it to pieces and burying itself in his arm. You see him shriek and fall backwards. You then instantly switch to the third and final target, Illin, but he's already making a run for it.

Well... two out of three was not so bad.

"Holy shit, that was amazing!" Rochelle gasps. "I've never seen someone shoot that far that fast!"

"Child's play." You puff up with pride.

"AAAAAAWWWW, and I didn't get to do anything!" Julie grumbles loudly.

"I have already called medical response for your first two targets." NEMO says helpfully. "I am also tracking the third."

"Come on, let's get him!" Julie say eagerly, like an attack dog chomping at the bit.

"Got it." Rochelle nods. "And you?"

"I will be paying my other cousins a visit." You say as you leap off the roof and engage your jump jets, landing on the next rooftop. You keep going, leaping from rooftop to rooftop with a combination of your jump jets and grappling hook until you reach Viktor's position first, where you see him cradling his injured shoulder. When he sees you approach, he tries to make a grab for his rifle, but you kick it off the roof.

"You've lost, cousin." You say grimly. You don't even bother to give him medical supplies, as you're sure he brought his own. "Just accept it and wait for help to arrive."

"I suppose." Viktor grumbles and turns away. "I will not pursue you any further."

"Good. I'd hate to actually have to kill one of my kin." You sigh.

"And... for the record, you look nice in American decadence." Viktor admits.

"Why thank you. Now I won't have to shoot you in the kneecaps." You smile.

"W-what?" Viktor blinks.

"Just kidding. Just stay here." You say as you blast off again.

Antonin is the same situation, though a bit worse off in the injury department, as he had minor burns and lacerations from his rifle exploding in his hands, along with the bullet lodged in his arm. But after getting outshot by you, he was neither in the condition nor mood to pursue you, either.

Now all that was left was Illin and the other conspirators. The Hornet drops down from the sky next to you and you grab onto the passenger skid.

"You found his hideout, I assume?" You ask.

"Well, yes and no." NEMO replies sheepishly.

"Come on, explain."

"Illin has taken refuge in the Russian consulate." NEMO says. "I have already reported this to the Producer."

"What?" You gasp. "No-"

"That's it, Morgan, pack it in." Producer says. "We're done."

"No! If I break pursuit now, they'll just come back!" You plead.

"I'm not going to allow you to attack the goddamn RUSSIAN CONSULATE, Morgan." Producer says adamantly.

Well, it's time to do what you do best, and you sit and wait. Hopefully, when he saw the Hornet fly off, Illin would think you gave up the chase. Then again, if Illin knew you at all, he's probably know that you would never do anything like that.

Well, it couldn't be helped. You nestle into a comfortable spot where you had a good vantage point on both the consulate's main and secret entrances. With Viktor and Antonin out of commission and in custody, you had no doubt the consulate would want Illin out of the country sooner rather than later.

Several hours go by, and it begins to grow dark. Not that it bothers you or anything. That's what nightvision optics were for. Not to mention, the cold here was child's play compared to how cold it could get in Russia.

Finally, your wait seems to pay off, as you see a large unmarked VTOL come in low and fast. Considering the consulate wasn't shooting the thing out of the sky, you could only assume it was expected to arrive. You raise your rifle and look through your scope, and see only one man exit.

Uncle Cherekov.

He was the typical large, burly Russian who's seen his share of conflict. He was one of Father's main rivals for leadership of the family, that was no secret. In fact, if it weren't for you, he'd actually be next in line to inherit leadership.

Sometimes being part of a big family really sucked.

And you see a panicked Illin dash out, running towards the VTOL. He and Uncle Cherekov appear to get into some sort of argument, but had committed a grave mistake, and were standing stationary in an open position, skylined against the background.

You fire the shot, but maybe you were too hasty, maybe you pulled the trigger a bit too hard, or maybe it was the downwash from the VTOL's engines. Whatever the case, your shot grazes Illin's right shoulder and he immediately dives for the deck. Uncle Cherekov ducks back into the VTOL while a squad of consulate security guards stream onto the roof, guns drawn. They block your line of sight to Illin as he scrabbles his way to the relative safety of the VTOL.

"What do you want?" Uncle grunts.

"For you to leave me alone." You snap. "I have done nothing wrong, yet you send assassins after me like a common criminal. And for what, just because of whose daughter I am?"

"It is EXACTLY because of your father!" Uncle roars. "To think that our proud family will be put under the charge of... of a spoiled little brat like you one day makes me SICK."

Again with this FAMILY.

"I never asked for this." You sigh. "But I WILL be the next head whether you like it or not. It's a responsibility I have to shoulder, and if I learned anything this land of 'decadence', it's that one must never shirk away from their responsibility."

Well, at least the Producer was good for something, you think.

"I see. What a pity." Uncle grunts.

"You will take your sons and you will leave this country. Forever." You say more confidently. "And no more attempts on my life."

"And if I don't?" Uncle openly challenges you.

"I happen to know Baba Yaga on a first name basis." You say.

"You mean the same Baba Yaga that took out an entire Spetsnaz platoon by herself?" Uncle tries to keep the fear and surprise out of his voice.

"The very same." You say. At first you though Baba Yaga was just a myth to scare the conscripts.

And then you met the Captain.

"So if you truly do value your life, you will leave and never return. Otherwise, Baba Yaga might pay you a visit."

"This isn't over." Uncle grunts.

"I don't expect to be. At least not yet." You say. "And I will be telling Father about this."

"Fine." Uncle responds coldly. However, he apparently forgets to turn off his mic, as you can hear him speak again, a bit more panicked. "What are you doing? TAKE OFF ALREADY, you idiot! Full speed to the airport!"

With that,t he VTOL's engines whine and as tries to take off. However, you continue to track the craft with your rifle.

Guys, the VTOL isn't in teh embassy any more.

Do we really want to let them get away when we can drop them from the skies, and corall them with our allies?

Would father REALLY want us to foist responsibility for our combat onto his lap, or take responsibility for our messes like a true leader?

This is our loyalty mission. Our last one good shot - literally - at a good, fitting ending.

The question is not to shoot or not.

The question is do you all have the heart to push it to the limit? To walk along the razor's edge? To walk the dinosaur?

Well, you might as well let them go, but that didn't mean you couldn't punish them for a bit. You resight your rifle and aim it at the VTOL's landing gear, popping off all three landing struts in quick succession. You wonder whimsically whether the pilot was any good at belly landings. At the very least it'll make their landing fairly uncomfortable.

You make quick call to NEMO to come pick you up, and soon enough you're back at the office, now at an ungodly late hour. You didn't think Producer would be there, but as you get off the Hornet, you could see him slumped over table, asleep, a cup of ice cold coffee in his hands.

Had he been waiting for you this whole time?

"The Producer was insistent that he stay until you return." NEMO says. "Not even Jenner could dissuade him."

Oh Producer... you really shouldn't have. You can't help but smile warmly.

"Producer..." You poke him in the arm to wake him up.

"Wha...?" Producer's eyes slowly flutter open. "Morgan? You're back!"

"I am. And uh, thanks for everything today." You smile and give him a big hug.

"I didn't really do that much, honestly." Producer chuckles, humble as ever.

"You've done more than you know." You laugh and kiss him on the cheek. "You know what we talked about earlier? About my family?"

"Yes?"

"I think I've finally settled on a decision." You say confidently.

"That's good." Producer chuckles.

"Do you have room for one more?" You ask as you grab another chair and snuggle beside the Producer, draping a blanket around the both of you.

"I really shouldn't-"

"I still have that Coupon." You say as you nestle your head against the Producer's chest. Dear god you suddenly feel so very tired.

"Oh, all right." Producer sighs with a smile and pats you on the head. "Just, uh, don't tell the other girls about this, all right?"

"Lips. Sealed."

Then you hear a loud purr.

"The same goes for you too, Loki." Producer grunts. For some reason he just didn't seem to like your new pet kitten.

"Now don't be so mean to Loki!" You pout as you pick up the kitten and tuck him against your chest. "What has he ever done to you?"

"More like what he WILL do to me." Producer shakes his head.

"Not cat person, are you?" You giggle.

"Not in the slightest." Producer laughs as he drapes a blanket over the both of you.

Hmmmmm, perhaps today wasn't such a bad day after all.
