You're days from home, in a section of the woods that puts your own to shame in terms of 'giant monster infestation', you're more than a little hungry and the boat you sailed in on is buried. Somewhere.

And the day is already looking up!

You can't keep the smile off your face as you walk. Sheszka is safe. You're surrounded by friends and family. There's less monstes in the daytime. And the rest of the trip is even downstream! You won't have to pull the boat.

You hum a little as you walk, letting the tune buzz through the air. You'd skip, but you're not sure how. Or if it's possible. It doesn't really work for people with more than two legs, does it? Spider skipping would be something like hopping, or bouncing rather than-

"Lyra?"
"Hm hmm hmm hmm- Nin? Yes?"

Her arms tighten, and she whispers quietly.
"Aren't you worried? About what he said? The city and the-"
You reach a hand up, over your shoulder, letting the moth's hair run through your fingers, stroking her head.

Not sure if its a nice surprise. That place has some bitter history to them. We don't even know if most arachne would want that.
Mom isn't very indicative of the average arachne.
>>
>>37202139
Well, that's just an unfounded assumption.
They could also think it's a really cool thing to do.
>>
>>37202170
Well yes. Just as assuming they would want to see it rebuild.
I doubt we were the only arachne with earth magic in the last few centuries.
>>
>>37202186
About time someone did the charity work of fixing the place up, then.
>>
>>37202170
>They could also think it's a really cool thing to do.
Its been six centuries.
Something tells me they aren't all that enthusiastic about it.
How about we first actually meet other arachne and get their view on things?
>>
>>37202186
>>37202215
>>37202219
actually, the assumption they would like it IS founded on arachne we've already met.

I mean, you might have an argument if we ever met other arachne who had a dissenting opinion, but we haven't.
>>
>>37202235
>the assumption they would like it IS founded on arachne we've already met
Which is Mom, who is explicitly atypical for a arachne.
And contrary evidence is the fact they haven't made effort to rebuild it in the last six centuries.
>>
>>37202257
They've also made no effort to make web highways to help the less combatative races.

Therefore, it must be a terrible idea they all hate, right? That's the assumption you're making here.
>>
>>37202272
Except I'm not making any assumption about that they would hate it. I'm saying that its a place of symbolic importance to them, and changing it, might not be well recieved.
Those two things aren't at all related to eachother.

Especially because all the races the Arachne actually interact with, are moths and harpies, who can fly, and aren't in that big need for web highways.
>>
>>37202272
>They've also made no effort to make web highways
To be fair, only the moths would actually be able to use those, and most of them aren't as adventorous as Nin.
We want web highways based on the assumptiom we find other races.
>>
>Rank 3 cooking
meanwhile, Lyra has proven pretty good at barbeques.
>>
>>37202272
>They've also made no effort to make web highways to help the less combatative races.
The less combative races can fly. Why would they need a highway?
>>
>>37202310
But moths explicitly can't fly well enough to get anywhere.
And you're outright saying that they wouldn't like it. That's your assumption. Based on not much at all.

It could be that nobody wanted to make the extremely long trip to the city to spend the time rebuilding something they didn't plan on living in, perhaps.

We're the only family who even lives close to the thing, if you recall.

There's an infinity of reasons for why they didn't fix it, and to immediately assume they won't like it is just being pointlessly contrarian.
>>
>>37202310
>>37202369
>>37202343
>But they can fly!
Moths can't fly like that you doofs.
It's central to many conversations we've had AND our moth character.
>>
>>37202369
I could see the moths needing it. Assuming there isn't anything dangerous that can climb trees in this forest. Which there most likely is.

>>37202390
I explicitly said moths would use them, read what people write.
>>
>>37202373
Not sure why you are so opposed to meeting other arachne to find out if they have any particular reason they didn't rebuild the ruins.
> Based on not much at all.
Based on them not having been rebuild in six centuries.
>>
>>37202373
>And you're outright saying that they wouldn't like it.
No, I'm saying we don't know if they would like it.
He assumed they absolutely had to like it.
I never said they necessarily would hate it, I said its very possible they might not want to see this place changed or rebuild.
>>
>>37202448
I'm not opposed to meeting them.
I am opposed to you assuming they don't want their fancy things rebuilt based on how nobody has decided to put any work into it yet.

Because there's usually only one or two families that even live near the thing, and it's STILL half a day trip there for us. And it would take several trips to fix it.

I really have no idea why you are so opposed to doing a nice thing. If they don't like it THAT FUCKING MUCH they can break it down again.

There's literally no reason for you to oppose this as much as you have.
>>
>>37202480
And it's very possible all the other arachne died of a mysterious disease in the short time since we've seen them. Better assume they're all dead and act on that information.
>>
>>37202448
>>37202373
>>37202310
>>37202272
Guys, it's nice to meet new people and it would be good to meet other Arachne in general. Taking the time to ask, just to make sure, won't really be a burden to us.

In fact, it would be nice to meet our Spiderauntie and Spidercousins. Let's go meet them.

That must be for a good reason. Better just get him a pile of things he already has.
>>
>>37202552
>I should instead get nobody anything.
Or you get them something different. You are really bad at making strawmen.
Usually you go an find out about what the person likes before making them a gift.

And the ruins are place of memory and history. Yes, it is very possible they don't want to see them changed.
>>
>>37202552
>you mean how I said it would be fun and probably a nice gift?
That is a completly unfounded assumptiom though.
Fact is, they haven't rebuild them in six centuries.
There is probably a reason, and we should find out that reason. Simple as that. Don't get so butthurt just because some people don't instantly agree with your idea and point out possible problems with it.
>>
>>37202605
And so far, all evidence has pointed to them liking the thing but not getting around to fixing it.
If you want more evidence, fine, but don't just go saying that they wouldn't like it based on nothing at all.
Sometimes these things just take some initiative.
>>37202650
>completely unfounded
All arachne polled thus far think it would be cool. You are free to poll more arachne, I am fairly confident it would only support my argument.
>>
She leans into your hand easily enough, falling silent against you.
You sigh a little as you consider what to say, chitin clicking lightly as you walk.

Sometimes simple is best.

"No."
There's a twitch of movement beneath your hand, a little hop as the moth's surprise makes itself known.
"But he said-"

You shake your head.
"No. Nevermind that the city fell, yes? Or how. It doesn't change anything. We will still leave the woods, still travel, still see so many different things, different lands."

Her hands come off your shoulders, reaching up and catching your own. Her thumbs trace your palm, your fingers as she shifts side to side on her feet.
"But... The forest- I wanted- I thought- that we could make it better. That if we just..."
She trails off again.

You close your hand holding hers for a moment.
"Nin, we are children. A year, a few years, that is a long time, yes? A decade is nearly forever! We will find things, learn things, grow older, wiser. Maybe not you, but-"
She snorts.
"And in any case- I will not be taking advice on cities from someone who's idea of a perfect living space is moss covered trees, yes? The wendigos don't seem to like people. They don't seem to like each other! And there are so many other things we could do-"

Your voice trails off as you consider them. Roads and maybe a central market, or just an office type thing or a meeting place or- Ah. Aha.

"-And none of those matter anyway because I am not GOING TO BE A QUEEN."
Her giggles bubble out into the air, and she leans against you again.
"Thank you."

You make a noise that's half growl, half assent, sending your friend into another set of laughter.

You pick up your pace.
Just a touch.

You know the general area of your boat, and you did build a marker over it.
You're still in an unfamiliar piece of the forest, though.

You've got ways of distracting yourself, at least.

"Lann?"
"Yeah?"
"What'd you think?"
"What did I think what?"

You tilt your head side to side.
"The wendigo, the story. The trip, I guess? You have to make a report, yes?"
"Yeah. I don't... The whole thing is weird. Every piece."
"Mhm?"

"To start- Everything we know about wendigos is wrong."
"Everything? Even what they looked like?"
"People thought that their faces pulled back over their skulls and then they ate people."
"I think he was just wearing it, yes."

"Mm. And they're healers and druids and want to be left alone in the forest. Hells, I don't know if they'll even believe me."
"I will speak for you, yes?"
"I don't know if that'll count for much."
"Of course it will. Who would contradict a giant spider?"

The half-elf snorts, leaning back in the eye socket- She isn't as small as Jin or Nin, so she's filled it with blankets, leaving her legs trailing across the back of the skull and sitting in it.
"I think you might be exploiting that a little much."
"I save it for special occasions, yes."

"Hmph. And you're not worried about the whole city thing?"
"I already say no."
"I heard. But the whole prophecy bit-"
"It was broken, yes? And I will break more, if only to prove him wrong."

"Yeah, that's a great attitude to have. Rewrite destiny out of spite."
"Whatever works, yes."

Well, this is definitely the area the boat should be in. Probably. You are planning to get it in the water, and then you just won't do anything for like, a whole week. Maybe a day.

You slow to a stop, tapping one leg idly against the ground.
A moment's thought conjures a stone out of the ground, letting your chitin click audibly.

A little frivolous magic and you can feel calmness wrapping around you.
It brings a smile to your face.

You can probably use earth magic to pulse for your boat. That'd necessitate stopping, grabbing mana from Sara and all that, though. And using magic rather than the earth control will tire you out faster.

You could, of course, just run around the woods looking for it. Orrrrrr-

Your eyes slide up one of the monstrous trees surrounding you, your head leaning back straining till you can see the branches above.
Jin could easily fly here. And two sets of eyes are better than one. And one set of eyes that can fly are probably better than one on the ground. And-

No, this is getting stupid.

You turn, leaning around Nin, extending a finger and prodding the snoozing harpy.
Her head pulls free from a wing, eyes blinking slowly as she looks around.

"Nnngnng- what? I am fast."
"No, you are Jin."

The bleached harpy pulls her shoulders back, stretching and yawning, feathers flicking as she clears her eyes.
"Lyra?"
"Jin."

You brush her bangs from her face, smiling as she look sup at you.
"I could use your wings, yes? We need to find where we buried our boat."
The harpy nods, picking herself up, wings already spreading.

"Look for the stone I raised to mark it, yes?"
"Yes, yes."

Between you and your eyes in the sky, it barely takes any time at all to track down the boat.

Which doesn't of course mean that you didn't spend thirty minutes running around the woods, checking trees and watching for foot prints. Or giant blood stains.

The only thing missing is ridiculous fast paced music as you barrel around trees and over roots, much to your passengers complaints.

You do, however, find the boat.
You'll mark it down as a success.

One bout of magically assisted digging later, Lann and Nin are walking next to you, you've got the boat slung over your back and a harpy demanding pampering in your arms.

Jin is barely staying awake as you stroke her hair and feather tufts, leaning back into you for warmth.
"Good job, yes?"
"Mmmhmmm-"
"We finally managed to get you awake, star-eyes. Don't go back to sleep."

"Star-eyes?"
"I think you are quite fixated on them, yes. Would you prefer fire eyes?"
"I am not obsessed, yes."

"You keep saying that, but-"
"Adventure-eyes."
"What."

"Always going on adventures."
"I am not."
"Planning to leave the forest."
"When we are older. And you wanted to come, too, yes!"

"I do want to come, yes. Not just so we get stronger. Not just to catch the stars. I will keep your stories, yes."

That's... a lot of words, actually.

"Thank you, Jinni."
"Mmmnm."

She manags to fall asleep a few minutes later. You aren't quite sure how she manages it, exactly. You should probably ask Lia. Mabe start writing your own monster compendium.
Or convince Sara, too. It wouldn't even be hard. Research monsters, write it down.
Getting her interested in non-magical species might take some work though.

You're still caught up in your thoughts when the trees thin, rushes and reeds lining the edge of the lake.

You don't have time for this. You'd like to get out of this piece of the forest before the sun falls.

You casually flip the boat into the water, securing it with a line of silk, wrapped once around your hand.

"Hop on, yes? I want to sleep in a tree and not be disturbed by giant monsters."
"Does it count if you have nightmares? I mean, you are kind of a-"
"I will leave you in the woods, Lann."

The half elf laughs, hopping easily to your back, offering a hand up to the tiny moth.

Your pace isn't quite at maximum- Sara doesn't have nearly your stride. Or your stamina.

You let the walk proceed in silence for a few minutes. At that point, you've had enough. Its time to amuse yourself.
"Lann? Do you mind if I ask a few questions?"
"Uh, sure? It depends what you're asking, though."
"Alright. What powers do you get from being half-human?"

"What?"
"And what ones are from being half-elf?"
"There isn't any-"

"Do you have poisonous fangs?"
"No. No, I don't."
"That is from the elf-side, yes?"
"I don't believe elves have poison fangs."
"But you're not sure."
"No, I'm pretty sure."

Nin is giggling, at least.

"Can you fly, then?"
"Why in any god's name would I be able to fly?"
"Well, Jin is half human, yes? And she can fly, so..."
"Jin can fly because she is a harpy. Because she has wings. Humans can't fly, Lyra."

"Then what are they good for, yes?"
"Just- All sorts of things."
"All sorts?"
"All sorts."

"I see."

You grin, and drop your pace a tad. Sara is flagging a bit.
"Sara, what did you think of the wendigo's magic?"

"It's- It's druidism, yes."
She gasps out, as she slows.
"Faith based magic, yes. It's not- Not the same. No mana."

"Hah? Really?"
"Yes. They channel the will of nature or something? There's still limits, of course."

The lake curves to a close in front of you, the single broken part of the bank rushing out and away.
You've reached the river.

One step at a time, yes.

Okay that makes more sense.

>Nah, Lann gotten over the giant spider thing.
Good, that means we can take the teasing to the next level.

I'm phone posting so I can't drop the whole story I would just like to say.

Dr. Love has started his courtship of the Butterfly and the lines "I'd like to spread you on my toast" and "Out of the cocoon, means it's all good" were used.

Old enough to be lewd with Lyra.

Since this is still up, here's the Wendigo location map update. Going to go work on a sea dragon because I'm bored.

Sea dragons are always a classic.

Can you do me a favor and also tell me what the genre of this quest chain is, I've added it to the 1d4chan quest list and am too tired to read through everything.

ffffantasy?
A pretty solid fantasy.
Though the QM is long gone by now.
>>
>>37213326
Eh, 90% of /tg/ quests are fantasy, and its almost always a safe bet, would you classify it as horror to or no?
>>
>>37213377
No, not really. Almost slice of life, but not quite.
>>
>>37213377
Not at all. It's generally very laidback and comical.

Completed the Sea Dragon, and saved as a separate map to be safe.
>>
>>37215501
That's actually pretty well drawn.
>>
>>37215519
I can't draw for shit, I take images that are similar to what I want and then edit the hell out of them for a few hours to get my desired look.

>You hum a little as you walk, letting the tune buzz through the air. You'd skip, but you're not sure how. Or if it's possible.
We must learn, it would probably take some practice, but it would be worth it
>>
>>37203876
Didn't the wendigo explicitly tell us that arachne have a tendency to break fate and buck prophecy?
>>
>>37205028
>Nat 1, giant monster eats our jin.
>>
>>37206356
>That image

>>
>>37206400
>Sarah researching monsters

>>
