"What the-" your overall-clad companion twitches his fuzzy ears.
Off in the distance, toward a large warehouse, you can hear- yelling?
Huh, that's a familiar scent in the air. It almost smells like, a wood fire?

You are Jack Albator, handsome swashbuckler, hero-for-hire, and-
And your train of thought has been interrupted. The man who said he was going to show you a magic ship takes off into a sprint toward the warehouse. In the distance, the yelling seems to intensify. And so does the smell of burning wood.
Which is when you realize that you may soon also be able to put volunteer firefighter on your list of achievements.

Cody already got the hint and darted off. He throws the bewildered man onto his shoulder as he runs past him and into the warehouse. Which leaves Yuuki and You to leap over the fence and into the courtyard behind it.

The dry-dock centered in the courtyard is a mess. Scraps of wood everywhere, along with the obvious frame of a very large ship grounded in the center of the dock. Everywhere, the builders and security of the night shift yell to each other and scramble for water and sandbags. At the edge of the ship's ribs, you can see a small fire bellowing. It's not a very large fire at the moment, but you can easily see how it could spread out of control with so much fuel laying around.

As you get closer to the flames, you suddenly notice a smaller fire, and then another, all seem to pop up along the frame of the ship. In the glow of the building embers, you can see a hooded figure zipping around the perimeter of the ship with record speed. As the silhouette bobs and weaves through the chaos, the problem only seems to get worse.

"Yuuki! You need to-"

You don't even get to finish, she breaks away from her gait alongside you and kicks an entire water barrel toward the flames. Briefly, she raises her spear into the air.
"HOLY AVALANCHE!"
A white line slowly follows along the ground before intersecting with the mid-air barrel. With a blast, the barrel explodes into a chilly white mist.
Snow, she somehow turned the barrel of water directly into a cold gust of snow. The white cloud settles onto the ship and its flames. Embers of the smaller fires smolder and puff from existence.
Well-played, Yuuki.

In the shadows of the lighting, you can still see a cloaked figure bob and weave between the panicked builders.

There he is.
No, wait, that's not him. There he is again!

He's weaving in and out of the crowd. Trying to make himself a difficult target to shoot.
"CODY! GIVE ME A HAND 'ERE"

There he is again! He just jumped out from the crowd and dashed toward the door of a shed. He stands outside of it grappling with the handle, trying to yank it open.

It's time.

Using your remaining five loaded shots, you unload every magic round you have directly at the dark shape. With a crash, you see the dark silhouette go down.

You hop up onto the concrete platform, ready to punch someone's face in.
Just to see the smashed remains of the door itself. It looks like he opened to door to shield himself.

You can see the figure weaving through the crowd. This time he seems to be going for the fence surrounding the courtyard.

"EVERYBODY DOWN!" Cody yells as he draws his revolver.
The crowd, likely used to their boss barking orders at them, immediately hits the dirt. Cody has a clear shot at the mysterious figure.
Several of the shots clearly strike the man's shoulder, but he powers through them. Resulting in his cloak taking some heavy damage as he flees.

With a yell, Yuuki leaps over the prone crowd.
"WINTER NOVA!"
A blue shine seems to erupt from her spear and fly straight through the air.

The hooded figure has almost cleared the courtyard by now, he quickly approaches the well and gets ready to spring over the fence.

Just as Yuuki's blue shine strikes the well like an arc of lightning. With a blast, perfect blue stalagmites erupt from the well and from the dampened soil.
The intruder, clearly not expecting this attack, skids on the frozen ground and falls right on his ass.

He stands up to face you as you approach.

>Tell him to stand down, there's no place to run.
>Just shoot him, what difference does it make here?
>Try to entrap him somehow with a nearby object

There's a yell behind you as Cody tells you to hit the dirt, as well.
Sure enough, Cody was right. Immediately the hooded figure reaches into his cloak and draws four throwing knives. With a quick movement of his wrist, he sends them all flying at your group.

They soar overhead as you can hear Cody shooting another series of shots behind you. Each bullet colliding with an individual throwing knife, striking it from the air.

You don't want to admit it, but he's damn good.

Several other bullets whiz over your head as another wave of throwing knives fly to meet them. Cody, however, is a much more talented shot. His bullets strike true on the hooded figure as he falls backward onto his back.

That's when you hear Cody grunt. Looking back at him, it seems one of those throwing knives hit true, slightly tearing his leather armor.
Yuuki jumps out in front, immediately intercepting another wave of throwing knives with a spin of her spear.

Both of them are damn good, wow.

So where does that leave you? You're crouched on the ground, the burglar continues to lay on the ice-slick ground as he throws more and more implements from his cloak in a last-ditch attempt.

Your hands are grasped around something cold, half-frozen, but very solid. Lifting it up slightly so you can see it in the day's ever-decreasing light, you see that it's part of a pilot's ladder! A thick webwork of netting that would normally be draped over the side or netted to crucial parts of a ship. This one hasn't been sewn or cut properly just yet, so it's more akin to a fishing net than a ladder.
Hey, there's an idea!

>Cont.
>>
>>37208458
Standing up into the hail of knives and bullets from both sides, you unfurl the large tapestry. It easily reaches over to the burglar with length to spare. With a solid throw, you heave the mass of rope over the burglar just as another set of knives tangle uselessly in the web.

The man struggles and kicks as his legs tangle in the weaved mass. With a solid pull, you bring him straight over to you and pick him up by the ankle. For such a scary figure, he certainly seems shorter than you. He struggles and kicks against your arm as you dangle him helplessly in the mass of netting.

That's when, at the last second, his arm punches through the net and whiffs very close to your abdomen with something in his hand! A large, silver hatchet is broken free from his grip as it falls uselessly to the ground.

What a stubborn ass he is. You grab both of his arms and pull them through the netting, and then punch him straight in the gut to just be sure he doesn't try that again.

With all that struggling, he stops moving. Slowly, flakes of his cloak start to come off in tangles in the rope net.

Something else is tangled in the net, locks of silver hair tangle and weave in the mess of ropes, along with pieces and scraps of his black cloak.

"Ha ha! That's unbelievable Jack! You bagged him!" Cody yells as he runs over, "Come on! Let's get him out of there and take a look at that scum!"

"Wait! Wait!" Yuuki, quite clearly out of breath, approaches, "Don't let him out yet! He could just run away! Let's get him somewhere he can't flee and look!"

They both make good points.

"Cody, wait. Yuuki is right. We don't want him getting out here. We need to get him back to the castle."
"Psh, fine. Are you going to carry him?"
"Maybe I should."

"Hold it." Yuuki says, looking nervous.
"I think someone should walk behind you in case he tries to cut his way out. He might have hidden a knife or something."

"Eeh, that's a good point. Not only that, there's nothing stopping him from trying to strike you in the back again if he gets a good footing in there." Cody says, eying the bag cautiously.

"Ferget it" You say, "Let's get Max and some of his guys to help with this, maybe there's a cart we can put 'im in or something."

You walk over to where the overall-clad engineer is desperately barking orders and surveying the damage caused by your burglar. The whole time, Yuuki and Cody keep a close eye on the now-limp sack.
"'Ey Max. I got yer perpetrator, right here."

He turns to look at you with relief awash over his face.
"Jack.. Between savin' me at the bar and now, 'at makes twice now that you've saved my skin. I don't know how I could possibly repay ye!"

Oh, right. Ah ha. The bar.
"..Let's call us even, aye?"

He looks confused for a minute, but laughs and replies with an "Aye."

According to him, the damage done to the ship is superficial. A little bit of planing and sanding, it'll be good as new. You would have stayed and listen to the complete roundup, but you have a prisoner to deliver.

Which is when one of the builders flags Max down. Behind him, three figures approach. You recognize them as the three brawlers that were taking the barfight apart earlier.
"Hey! Boss!" the lowly peon yells, "I got a couple of knights from the castle!"

>Knights, eh? Introduce yourself.

No no, you have a prisoner in the bag and he's likely formulating an escape plan right now! You don't have time for this!

"'ey, Max. Deal with these guys, we're off to the castle."
"Eh? Aye. Take care, Jack."

With that, you make your way toward the exit. One of the knights approaches you to ask about the large bag.
"Hey, Yuuki? Jack? What's happening here?"
"Glad to meet you too." Cody says under his breath.

"Nothin' much Lass, this is the perpetrator. We're takin' him back to the castle for questionin'."
"Oh you actually caught someone? I-"

She catches herself, putting her hand over her mouth when she realizes the tone of how she just said that.
"I'll drop by later. Do you need help transporting him?"

With a whump, you set him down in one of the nearby carts and start pulling him.
"Naw, I think we're fine, unless ye really want to."
"No! No! I'm fine! I'll be by later."

Strange lass, that. But you don't have time for it. Cautiously, Yuuki and Cody walk behind you and keep an eye on him as you pull him all the way through town and to the castle.

--

You get some guards in the castle to help with the heavy lifting, so to speak. You don't wish to even dare let him out in here, so you take the long walk down to the dungeons.

"Hey! I'm going to let Anna know I'm okay. I'll see you in a bit!" Yuuki says, before she takes off.

Cody shuffles his foot uncomfortably, "Yeah, speakin' of which, Jack. I'm not much of an interrogator. Know anyone who is?"

>Get Fritelli, she seems to run everything around here anyway.

"Who're ye kiddin' Cody? Yer lookin' at the most intimidating person in the castle!"

He doesn't seem very convinced. So you begin to recount one of the greatest achievements of your career.
"One time, I made an entire poker table of sailors fold instantly with just a look! Just one look from me and they were so scared they threw their cards down and left the table!"

You did have just a little help from a queen that was kept up your sleeve, but details are just details.

"Ha! And besides, I learned from the best! We'd find merchants all the time that would cack their pants at the first sight of our ship! Some lowlife burglar doesn't stand a chance against me. "

You feel more confident than ever before about this one! They don't even have real violence here, so someone who is accustomed to actual violence is going to make their timbers shiver!

You walk down the stairwell behind the guards who hoist the squirming bag before them. Quickly, they arrive in the almost completely abandoned jail and throw the bag in. You and Cody step in after them as they shut the cell door behind you. Both of the guards stand at attention, waiting for your next word.

Perfect.

You get to work quick, trying to untangle and unfurl the ropes and netting that have ensnared your prisoner. Ropes so thick and heavy that it's hard to even make out that there's a person under all of this. You grab rope after rope and move them out of the way as you slowly start to shuffle the prisoner out of the trap appendage by appendage.

Your hand grabs another mass of something definitely not rope-like in nature. A kind of mass that elicits a high-picked squeak from the bumbling captive along with another round of kicks and squirming.

A high pitched squeak? Definitely not the kind of screaming you were expecting. Something is wrong here.
Cody grabs the top of the entire tangle of ropes and rips it off with a strong, powerful yank.
The bindings give way to a head of long, shoulder-length hair. Held in place by an elaborate, multicolored headband. Below that, there is nothing else.

The captive, clearly a few years younger than you and maybe Yuuki, grips her hands into little fists as she tries to cover herself with her tattered cloak. On her face is an expression halfway between the pouting and the full-on cry of a moody teenager.

Cody tosses the rope mess over her and steps back, completely dumbstruck.
"Jack, err. This isn't what I was expectin' at all. So I hope you know what you're doin'."

Strange, you were about to say the same thing to him.
