RULES AND STATS: http://pastebin.com/SeV4Mmqv

You are KARLA WEISS, a Belkan fighter pilot looking to carve your own place in the skies!

You splash more water on your face as you look at yourself in the mirror. Nearly getting killed by a burst missile again dredged up a lot of bad memories, and you hadn't been feeling well in the couple days since that mission.

Your poor Falcon had seen better days, as well. When you put down on that Yuke carrier for emergency repairs, the repair crews were shocked you were even able to fly back, much less land successfully. While the rest of your flight didn't fare as badly as you, their planes had gotten pretty banged up as well. Bad enough that the captain of the ship outright refused risking sending them off the catapult. As a result, you were all sent back by C-2 Greyhound while your planes were carried back to base by helicopter. Smokey was in literal tears when he saw the sorry state your fighters were in.

You then hear a soft knock on the bathroom door.

"Karla?" You hear Lilian's voice. "Are you okay? You've been in there an awfully long time..."

You take a few deep breaths, trying to regain your composure and rebuild that famed Belkan stoicism.

"I'm all right." You manage to say simply. "Thanks for asking, though."

"Hm." Lilian doesn't sound quite convinced. "If you say so."

You lean over the sink, continuing to stare into the mirror. Sometimes, you swear you can see flashes of that ill fated battle over Sand Island all those years ago. Planes, missiles, and explosions dazzling the reflective surface. You finally pull away from the sink and exit the bathroom, where you see Lilian waiting for you.

"Hm, you certainly don't LOOK well." Lilian gives a slight smile as she pats the chair next to her. "Care to sit a while and talk?"

"Okay." You sigh and take a seat next to Lilian. "I suppose we're not going to be talking about pretty clothes and boys."

"Well, we can if you want!" Lilian giggles and winks.

"Ah, um, no. Not really." You bite your lip. "That's, uh, I'm totally not interested in that stuff at all!"

"Whatever you say." Lilian chuckles and then sighs. "Actually, I kind of wanted to apologize to you."

"Apologize for what?" You blink. "You're making it sound like it's all your fault!"

"Well... it is slightly." Lilian looks away and laughs nervously. "The mission was funded by my family, after all, and I was partly the reason why they awarded Artemis the contract, so I bear some responsibility..."

"No, it's not like that all!" You insist. "If it's anybody's fault, it's those damn Kasnans for shooting that damn missile in the first place."

"I guess you're right." Lilian nods thoughtfully.

btw, for anyone missed the twitter on last Friday/Saturday.

Also open suggestion for Tatsuta candidate here.
>>
Hey, I'm curious. Where does the whole Belkan Stoicism (tm) come from? Like the prominent Belkans in AC, Pops and Pixy weren't all that stoic and the same goes for the ace squadron leaders in Zero, who all had different personalities.
>>
>>37212390
Tatsuta is a bit of a troll... Lara maybe?
>>
>>37212426
Perhaps Karla has delusions of BELKAN KNIGHTHOOD in her life... or it's just that she has a relatively reticent personality. You know, from her PTSD or being bullied as a child and having to keep it all in, etc, etc, etc

I just imagine that Karla is fairly stoic because all that has happened to her and the way she grew up
>>
>>37212426
Because Belka is Strangereal's Germany, and Germans are stereotyped as humorless, efficiency-first buzzkills.
>>
>>37212426
Maybe because Belkan is synonymous with German.
And Germanic stereotype is rather stoic and with weird sense of humor.
>>
>>37212426
The upper class Belkans are seemingly quite stoic. Additionally, Pops seemed pretty stoic to me.
>>
>>37212502
I dunno man, there was plenty of humor to be had when Germany did what they did to Brazil in the World Cup.
>>
>>37212426
I like to think Belkans come in 3 main styles. You got Proud ones, Sly ones, and Stoic ones. I think Karla shows all 3.
>>
Buddy when?
>>
>>37212526
Hence, why I specified it was a stereotype.
>>
>>37212526
Hell even the nazi's had a sense of humor from time to time. And not in the "Look at the jew running around on fire." humor.
>>
>>37212213
Huh I figured we'd talk about crippling stress and fear of that type of weapon.
>>
>>37212526
Man, that was a terrible game. My Brazilian friend took a few days off work and just drank with his entire family (mom, dad, 2 grandfathers, 1 grandmother, 2 brother and little sister) for 3 days straight and apparently cried.

"You know, you seem way too nice and understanding to be a fighter pilot, much less a merc." You frown. "And considering your family, it's not like you need the money, either. Really, why are you here?"

"Hmmmmm, that's a rather good question." Lilian gives you a thoughtful look. "I suppose I wanted a change of pace."

"A change of pace?" You raise an eyebrow. "What, cocktail parties and lounging around in skyscraper sized mansions didn't do it for you?"

"You could say that." Lilian nods. "Life at home just felt very... strangling. My and my siblings were told from a young age that we would grow up to change the world. I just couldn't see how I could achieve that sequestered away in the depths of the family estate. That's why I joined the air force, and later Artemis. I feel like I'm making a difference when I'm actively making it with my own hands."

"Something tells me your family didn't quite agree?"

"Oh, of course they didn't!" Lilian laughs. "But they respected my decision. On that note, did you ever tell your mother that you joined up?"

"Erm...." You look away. "...no."

"I'll get around to it... eventually." You bit your lip. "You have to understand, when my Dad flew out and never came back... it really hit her hard. I can't even imagine what she'd feel like if she had to live with the fear the same would happen to me."

"Well, we all have to learn to deal with uncomfortable truths." Lilian sighs. "I just hope you and your mother can come to an understanding while you still can. There's no worse feeling than regret."

"Oh, believe me, I know regret." You say grimly. Sometimes you wished you died over Sand Island that day, so you wouldn't have to live with the burden of being the lone survivor.

And now the atmosphere just felt heavy and oppressive. Lilian seemed to realize this, too.

"How about this!" Lilian clasps her hands around your own. "How about we take the day off and go off base? Just the two of us!"

"Um, sure." You blink. This was... sorta a first. You didn't exactly have a lot of friends when you were young, and you had devoted most of your time to the military, so the concept of just going out with someone was just a bit alien to you. "Would Samantha be okay with that?"

"Oh please, she'd probably let us if we ask nicely!" Lilian laughs. "Plus, it's not like our planes have been fully repaired, yet!"

"That's true..." You nod. "And I'm guessing money isn't an issue.

"Nope!" Lilian smiles and takes out a solid black credit card. "I haven't used this much, but now seems like a good time, right?"

"How about something to eat?" You ask. "I mean, honestly, all we've had is that cafeteria slop. I'm sure a girl of your refined taste has to notice, as well."

"Well, yes, that IS one of the luxuries I do miss." Lilian agrees. "Oh, I know just the perfect place! Let's go!"

Lilian pulls you along and the both of you return to the barracks to get changed into more casual clothes. Couldn't with going around town in your flightsuit, after all. You simply get dressed in a simple shirt and jeans, but Lilian decides to come out in a full dress.

"You carry that around with you on base?" You raise an eyebrow.

"Well, you never know when you need one!" Lilian gives a slight twirl, her hair and dress sweeping in the breeze.

Nice.

Lilian then insists on driving, taking you off the base and towards Oured.

"Now, I know this very good pasty shop. Very, VERY exclusive. They won't even let you through the door unless the baker personally knows you!"

"Really?" You blink. "How does he even stay in business?"

"He does it more as a hobby than a living, really."

"Ah." You nod. Goddamn rich people.

Finally, you arrive a pretty nondescript little building, tucked away on the edges of a high class suburb. Lilian leads you through the door, when a big burly suit slides in out of nowhere to block your path, and he just glares silently at the two of you.

"She's with me." Lilian points to you.

The suit gives Lilian one look and slides out of view. Damn, how does such a big guy move like that?

"Lilian!" You see a short, bearded man standing behind a counter lined with the fanciest, most beautiful cakes and pastries you had ever seen. "Why, the last time you were here, you were just a wee lass! What's the occasion?"

"Oh, I'm just showing the place to my dear friend Karla here!" Lilian puts hand on your back and gently pushes you forward. "Karla, this is BP, the owner of this shop. SP, this is Karla, one of wingmates!"

"Oho, a comrade in arms, I see!" BP chuckles. "Well, since you're both military, consider your cakes on the house!"

Hm, if you remember correctly, that war was about, ten, maybe fifteen years ago? What you DID remember was that was the war Mobius One made his appearance and then subsequent disappearance.

"After the war ended, home just didn't feel the same." BP says a bit sadly and wistfully. "So, I moved here. Opened up a bakery and now I just spend my days baking instead of fighting."

"I see." You nod, but your gaze is quickly drawn to BP's assortment of cakes.

Oh my, so many choices...

"That one." You say, pointing to cake that looks more like a pile of roses than an actual cake.

"Oooooh, that's a good choice!" PB laughs. "I'll get that one out right away!"

A few minutes later, you and Lilian are sitting at a small table next to a large window, perfectly placed to allow sunshine to come in. You have your giant rose cake, while Lilian has a simpler but no less delicious looking cake with frosting that you swore was actual snow.

Goddamn, this cake looked so pretty it was almost a shame to have to destroy it. However, your grumbling stomach, as well as the knowledge that someone was eventually going to eat this cake, finally convinces to you dig in.

...and you nearly pass out from the pure sugar rush.

"It's good, isn't it?" Lilian laughs.

"The best!" You nod.

"Mhm. I thought so!~" Lilian laughs. "Actually, I was meaning to ask you something..."

"Well, go ahead." You say, taking another bite of your cake.

"I couldn't help but notice that you've been spending quite a bit of time around one of the guys from Asset Protection. Mmmmmm, Jager was his name, right?"

You nearly choke on your mouthful of cake.

"So I'm sensing a story here." Lilian leans forward with a smile. "Care to tell?"

"Aaaaaah, all right." Lilian sighs. "There is a guy I met during the war. Part of my squadron, actually. Very nice, eager to prove himself to the world."

"I'm sensing a 'but' here."

"But, he's intimidated by my social status. Thinks he's not good enough for me." Lilian shakes her head. "Plus, since we were in the same unit during the war, neither of us thought it was appropriate to pursue a relationship..."

"So, do you still talk to him?" You ask.

"Occasionally." Lilian sighs. "Last I heard, he quit the air force and joined up with a another mercenary unit. I think he got it in his head that he has to strike it rich to impress me."

I get that English might not be your first language, but how can you not understand that he is doing what he is doing to prove himself to her, he IS pursuing her, in a round about way.

"We can do some shopping, I guess." You shrug.

"Oh, wonderful!" Lilian nods. "Where would like to go? Expense is no issue, of course!"

Hm, that was tempting...

"You know any good places?" You ask.

"Of course!" Lilian smiles. "You'll love it!"

---

"I HATE IT." You grumble.

"Oh, I think it looks cute on you!" Lilian smiles, back in her teasing mode. "Perhaps Jager would enjoy seeing you in this!"

"Of course he won't!" You grunt, your cheeks red hot. "What guy would find this frilly abomination attractive?"

"Now you sound like you're in denial!" Lilian chuckles. "Come on, live a little! It's not like you're paying for it, right?"

You grumble as you look at yourself in the mirror again.

"How about something a bit more casual looking?" You ask.

"Oh fine, if you insist." Lilian digs through some more clothes before handing you a fresh set. "Try these!"

---

Okay, you think to yourself as you look in front of the mirror. This was much more like what you had in mind.

You choose out a few more select clothes. Mostly just more casual wear and a fancy dress or two. Like Lilian said, it could never hurt to be prepared.

"Hm, it just occurred to me that we should get Lara and Amy something? We can't just leave them completely out." Lilian says.

"Hm, you're right." You nod.

In the end, you decide to grab stuffed versions of Lara and Amy's favorite planes, the F-15 and A-10 respectively.

Aw hell, might as well grab a Falcon and Typhoon for yourself and Lilian.

And finally, the day is done. Both you and Lilian start to make your way back to base, the car now laden with bags full of expensive loot.

"You know, I actually had a great time." You admit to Lilian.

"Mhm. I sort of suspected." She nods.

"And you know, thanks for everything. I was in a pretty bad funk before then."

"Of course. I wouldn't help somebody who wasn't in need!" Lilian chuckles.

"And seriously, good luck with your boyfriend."

"H-he's not my boyfriend! Erm, at least not yet anyways..."

Once you return to base, you hand out your spoils to Lara and Amy. The two pilots, being as childish as they are, instantly fall in love with their new toys.

"Awww, ya shouldn't have, Karla!" Lara smiles as she looks at her stuffed Eagle.

"I have to admit, it is kinda cute..." Amy agrees.

"Hey, I did promise to help get you a bed warmer, right Amy?" You grin.

"S-shut up about that!" Amy pouts. "It's not funny!"

However, your, Lara's, and Lillian's laughter seems to demonstrate otherwise.

"I hope I'm not interrupting anything."

The four of you snap to attention when you realize Samantha is present.

"At ease, girls." Samantha grins. "Just coming to deliver some news."

"Good or bad?" You ask.

"Good and gooder!" Samantha laughs. "Good news is that all your planes are completely repaired and ready to fly! And the gooder news is that we've got a new contract!"

Ah, well, looks like it was back to business as usual.
