https://twitter.com/Chromatique_GM

It is now past the official start of the new year - maybe an hour or so past the minute tick into 2015, and despite your surroundings you’re feeling rather comfortable. Your surroundings being a large party filled to the brim with idorus. The comfort, of course, coming from the 5th (or was it 6th? 7th?) glass of whiskey in your hand. You’re seated in a large, comfortable armchair, half watching the crowd of drunk idorus and their various friends live and enjoy the welcome into the new year. Iori had tried sticking around you for most of the night, but you implored her to go and enjoy the company of the other idols - she was with you enough, and deserved some fun with her friends. You had all you needed for the night in your old friend Jack Daniel.

From your vantage point you can spot a few idols here and there that you had previously been introduced to - Miki and Chihaya being the two that you knew the best (after Iori) and Hibiki Ganaha, a tan, boisterous girl with a love for animals that Iori had introduced you to tonight. They all seem to be having fun, but everyone in the room was very obviously inebriated. Idols don’t get drunk - as if.

Still, you feel as though you want to get home very soon. You’re tired, and being around all these people was absolutely draining.

Wobbly on your feet, you decide to get up and

As these things tend to happen, you meander your tall lanky way through the crowd of smaller, much more proportional girls, looking around from head to head to see if you could find Iori. Of course, things just aren’t that easy. She is nowhere in sight, and only the alcohol in your system prevents you from taking your normal course of action, ie: flipping out in a sweaty paranoia.

Instead, you head towards Miki, the well-endowed blonde idol who had previously helped Iori rescue you. She’s a bit tipsy, but welcomes you with a smile.

“Hey Protag!” she says, “Happy New Year!”

You return the greeting and then mumble out a “I-is Iori around here?”

She purses her lips in thought “No, I don’t think I’ve seen her recently.”

You nod and slink away, almost tripping over a few of the girls on your way through the sea of idols.
Of the other 2 girls you ask the same thing - had anyone noticed Iori anywhere. The answer was also the same. No, no one had seen her in what had to be about an hour.

A mild panic attack begins to rise in your stomach, but you ignore it for once and instead wander out of the apartment, light on your feet. Out in the cool hallway you can think a tiny bit straighter. Perhaps Iori wandered to the little cafe next door to the apartment building you were in?

With a goal in mind (for once), you head for:

Although your vision is spinning you manage to walk slowly, slowly towards the elevator. Once inside, you try and make sense of those alien marks - or, well, numbers. Lower floor...lower floor....you try and click on the the “Base Floor” button, but your shaky fingers happen to press in the 20th floor button.

Fuck.

You realize your mistake all too late, and despite trying to correct it you still have to ride all the way up to the 20th floor, and then from there ALL the way back down to the ground floor. Needless to say, you wasted quite a bit of time.

Stumbling out of the elevator only brings more time-wasters. Darting in and out of your way are people in the lobby still excited about the simple prospect of a new year, and they waste no time in getting in between you and the door. Some give you a loud “HAPPY NEW YEAR” for which you can only respond much more quietly. Others stand in your way, talking amongst themselves and oblivious to your presence. Trying your hardest not to be a bother, you squeeze past all of these people and eventually make it to the blistery but fresh air of the outside world.

The first thing you notice is how fucking cold it is outside. You only wish now that you’d taken your sweater with you, but you don’t want to go back into that crowd. The cold air, however, wakes you from your alcohol induced stupor. Mostly.

Taking only your second step out the door, you trip and fall flat on your face. Your mind may be in a better place, but your body and reaction time are still guzzling whiskey up in the loft.

The first place you think of visiting is the cafe next door. It’s still open, somehow, and inside are a few people drinking coffee to stay awake and/or sober up. You slink your way in there and order a coffee for the same purposes.
And yet, you can feel eyes staring holes in your back.

With the past few months of your life having been entirely more active and dangerous than any other, you think before you turn around, and instead check the reflection in your spoon like a movie spy. As it would be, any reflection was thrown off and distorted with the curves of the spoon. Ah well, it was worth the try.

You sigh, and finally turn around to see the slightly familiar face of a gir you had met that night. Tall, busty, and hardened from years of dealing with idols, their producers, their managers, and everyone in between, there behind you sat Anna Nabokov. She stood with her arms crossed, one hand clutching a coffee in a to-go cup, and she waited for you to speak first (even if she was the one staring at you).

“A-Anna, was it?” you ask

“The same. What’re you doing out here?” she asks

“I couldn’t find Iori inside, so -”

“Another one?” she shakes her head

“Hmm?”

“I had to scour the city for two new idols who drank just a bit too much. Idols don’t get drunk, my ass.”

Well, at least she felt the way you did.

“You haven’t seen her in here, have you?” you ask.

Another shake of the head, this one not as patronizing as the last. “I’m going to guess you need help finding your girl.”

You nod.

“Are you absolutely sure she wasn’t upstairs?”

Another nod, and she sighs.

“Well, we might as well get going.”

You don’t even get to finish your coffee before she drags you away, and in the direction of

Sorry this took so long. I had to do something real quick

For what had begun for most people as a festive night petered down rather quickly - the group of partiers that had occupied the park earlier was entirely gone, with only small noise makers and “2015” banners scattered around the grass as a reminder that they were there. The park isn’t very large, and you notice a lack of Iori rather quickly.

As you turn to ask Anna if she saw anything, you see that she’s walking away without a word towards the silhouette of a young girl farther in the park. The girl is stumbling around, obviously drunk, and playing on the slide all by herself. Her laughter rings out loud in the night air.

You run after Anna, still stumbling yourself, and appear while Anna speaks.

“ - and don’t you realize that if you break a leg here, you can’t perform next week?”

“Y-yes, Anna. I u-BURP-understand”. the girl says pitifully.

Anna grips her arm to help the girl up and brushes off her skirt of dirt that it had accumulated from the slide. Anna then turns to you.

“Mind if she comes with us on our little hunt? If we go back we’re wasting time.”

You shrug, indicating that you don’t mind.

“Have you seen Iori?” you ask the girl, who Anna had introduced as Mami Futami.

She shakes her head. “Last time I saw her was back in the apartment.”

“Ah. Thanks anyway.”

Then, with Anna taking point, the three of you head towards

When you see Anna heading towards the group of street urchins hanging around a few blocks from the apartment building, you immediately want to turn around. Not only are you uncomfortable around so many people, but there’s also no chance in hell that these kids won’t be the pushy, bully kind that you really hoped you’d escaped after high school. They could smell your weakness like a bloodhound can smell a lost kid.

Maybe you needed a bloodhound to find Iori…

Despite your objections, you do end up heading towards the gathering of your high school nightmares. They don’t see you approach - they’re all too preoccupied staring at....something in the circle. Hooting and hollering rang out in the cold, otherwise quiet streets.

Mami stood back with you as you watched Anna fearlessly make her way through the crowd, which parted like the red sea at her arrival.

“Ayyyy lady, what’s poppin?” one kid asks.

A single stare from the girl silences him. Some of the kids laugh, while others resume paying attention to what you can now see is another idol, beer can in hand, dancing and rapping to a beat blaring out of someone’s smartphone.

“Ami!” Mami calls out. The rapper turns, smiles a confident grin, and continues on.

To put it bluntly, she was probably going to be more successful if she stuck with the idol thing.

Unfortunately for her, Anna was going to have no part in this. She walks over to Ami and begins dragging her by the ear.

“Ow ow ow!” the girl cries.

“Anna, mind asking them?” you whisper. She rolls her eyes, but agrees. You’d probably stutter through the question 6 times before you got it right.

“Ami,” you ask. “You haven’t seen Iori, have you?”

She thinks for a moment and then nods. “I think I saw ‘er go that way earlier.” she points down, further still from the apartment you’d been partying at. Had Iori really made it that far without you noticing?

Anna comes back shaking her head, but you tell her what Ami said.
“I don’t even have to tell you that it was stupid hanging out with all those guys, do I?” she asks Ami grips the hem of her skirt, and looks anywhere but Anna’s eyes.

“You’re like their mother.” you say. Whoooops. That wasn’t supposed to slip out.

Anna then turns her stare on you, cocking an eyebrow. “What an astute observation.” her tone is more sarcastic than you thought possible. “But yes. I help manage all the girls in the company at a personal level - I’m not setting up their concerts, I’m making sure they get there safe and sound. And I prefer to think of myself more like big sister, and less like a ‘mother’”

You try switching subjects. “Y-you know, your last name is kinda familiar…”

“I’m sure Iori’s mentioned me before.”

Mami and Ami, who you now find out are twins, begin speaking to each other in quiet voices while you and Anna figure you to go next.

With Anna taking the spearpoint yet again, the now-expanded group you’re in continues down the block, the blustery cold whether an issue to everyone who isn’t the unflappable Anna. She hasn’t shivered once, while you and the twins might as well be blocks of ice.

“G-god I’m cold.” Ami says.

“J-jesus, I’m f-freezing!” Mami continues.

You keep silent. Your normal stutter would be infinitely worse without proper jaw control.

It’s a few minutes later when you finally end up at the bar. The place is loud, its music flowing in from the outside, and you can still hear many voices inside. It’s about 2 in the morning now, but the place is just as full as it had been 2 hours before. The four of you try to enter, but a large, bald man stops the group with a muscled arm.

“I’m going to need to see some ID.” he says. “And there’s no way them lil’one’s ‘re 21.”

Anna doesn’t even blink, and procures a dark black card with information on it. The man’s eyes widen, and he removes his arm from your way.

“Go on in.”
You begin walking, and Anna calls back “Tip the guy, Protag. It’s new years day.”

Grumbling, you pull out a 10 and then follow the girls into the place.

“What was that card?” you ask.

“Let’s just say that Idol Production companies have a lot of...reach.”

Not wanting to go any further with that line of conversation, she leads the group into the heart of the bar where yet another circle is surrounding two people. This time you can see who it is without it parting - a silver-haired Idol is matching a large, muscle-y man shot for shot. After 5 each, they grip hands and stare eachother in the eye.

Yes, there before you is an idol trying to arm wrestle a grown man.

You take a look around the bar but your idoru girlfriend is nowhere to be seen. When you turn back towards the “event”, however, you’re dumbfounded.

Somehow, Takane - the idol - does not have an arm snapped into 3 pieces.

“Want some?” Ami asks, procuring some popcorn from idol hammerspace and popping some pieces in her mouth.

“Or a drink?” Mami offers, taking a sip of her own.

This was almost odder than the whole “no broken arm” thing. Of course, you accept both.

Anna, appearing beside you, begins cheering for Takane. The twins follow suit, the three girls clapping and yelling things like

“Go Takane!”

“You can do it!”

“Snap his fucking arm!”

That was Anna.

And you find yourself doing the same, cheering for the girl to take down her much, much bigger opponent.

Takane has a regal air about her normally, and now it’s somehow become a satisfied smirk. She looks like a queen as she watches the large man struggle to move her arm even a bit.

And then she makes it a point to destroy him. With a flick of the wrist and pressure precisely applied, Takane slams the man’s arm down to the table, actually cracking it between them.

A slight bow with her upper body and she collects a large stack of money from everyone in the crowd.

You go to speak, jaw nearly dropping in disbelief, and all she can say is “It’s all in the wrist”.

“Have you seen Iori?” you yell over the music.

She nods, now looking concerned. “She had been here, with me, but I think she said something about finding you, actually.”

“So she’s not here anymore?” Anna asks.

“It appears not.”

Now discouraged more than ever, the five of you walk out of the bar back into the blustery winter night.

Anna sighs, pursing her lips, and looks to you. “Protag, I know you’re upset but...maybe we should get the girls back to the apartment. They’re drunk and cold and they’re not going to be much help in our search.”

As much as you’d like to continue on with your search, you have to admit that she’s correct - 3 drunk idols would not help in the slightest. Plus, didn’t Takane say something about Iori looking for you?

“Yeah, guess we’ve gotta call a cab. I got a guy.” you say.

Anna, slightly busy with making sure the girls miss their nice clothing as they throw up, just nods.
It is less than 5 minutes later when Ivan, your trusty cab driver (and friend) pulls up to meet the 5 of you, and rescue you from the disgustingly cold night.

You hold the door open for the girls, and the idols slide in. Anna, however, is already climbing in the passenger seat. You shrug and sit beside Takane.

“Happy New Years.” you hear Ivan say to you - you think. But when you go to respond, you’re beaten to the punch.

“Happy New Years, Dad.” she smiles a pure, genuine smile, one you never would’ve expected to see on her face considering her no nonsense attitude,

And wait, did she say Dad?

“Ivan’s your dad?” you ask

“The only one I’ve got.” She smiles, placing her hand on her father’s. “But how’d you have his number in your phone?”

“We have history,” Ivan explains - his Japanese is nowhere near as good as his daughters, but that’s to be expected. “I save him and his girlfriend many times.”

“It’s true.” you nod

“Small world.” Anna says, and then begins speaking to her father in Russian while on your way to the apartment.

The first thing you do is look over at the idols beside you, the ones you and Anna rescued earlier in the night. The twins Mami and Ami are passed out, heads resting on each other. In the darkness of the cab, unable to see their different hairstyles, you’re completely unsure about which is Ami and which is Mami.

Takane is awake and, despite her previous showing, far less drunk than she ought to be. However, her hand is covering her mouth, and she seems very worried about throwing up all over those of you in the back of Ivan’s cab.

It’s then that a thought hits you - all this time looking for her, and not once did you even think about calling Iori’s phone. You pull out your phone immediately following the thought and call your girlfriend.
The phone rings once, twice, and on the third it finally answers. All you hear, however, is the sound of the toilet flushing, and a painful headache-induced moan.

Huh.

Finally the cab arrives at the apartment building, and you grab Ami, while Anna picks up Mami. Takane, taking some money from the huge stack she won, pays for the trip and a tip, and then throws up right outside the car.

You begin to make your way towards the apartment, but a look back shows Anna and her father sharing a heartfelt moment.

“I’ll see you in the morning, Dad.”

He smiles - one of the very, very few times you’ve seen him do that - and drives away slowly into the night.

You, Anna, and Takane take an elevator ride up to the 10th floor, where the party is winding down. No longer can you hear music, and when you enter (and place the sleeping twins on an unoccupied couch), you can see that many of the girls are asleep or otherwise very calm.

And yet, no Iori.

Using the flushing from the phone call as your guide, you triumphantly swing open the bathroom door. And there she is! Iori, your idoru, is currently looking more sick and ragged than she ever had before, leaning over the toilet bowl. There was the terrible smell of vomit in the air.

“P-Protag?” she croaked out, voice hoarse.

“Happy new year!” you try, a sympathetic grin on your face. She grimaces and vomits once more.

You take a deep breath and sit beside her, rubbing her back as she throws up. It’s definitely gross, but as a NEET, you’ve seen - and done - much more disgusting things than a bit of vomit.

“T-thanks.”
Anna walks to the threshold of the door, holding her nose and not walking in.

“So she was here?”

“Yep.”

“Well, that’s better than her being somewhere on the street. Feel better, Iori.”

“I-I’ll try.”

Anna gives a little wave and walks off, probably to mother some other idols somewhere.

As it is, sometime in the night you and Iori had fallen asleep in the bathroom. You awaken to - of course - the lingering smell of vomit, but also Iori sleeping on your chest (and her hair in your face was much, much nicer smelling than the rest of the air in there). Sunlight peeked through the single bathroom window. Each beam of light that reached your eye burned. Your head pounded like a jackhammer.

You don’t even want to look at the time on your watch - it’ll either be much too early, or much too late, and you don’t feel like feeling shitty emotionally ontop of mentally and physically.

You gently, gently wake Iori, who looks only slightly less terrible than last night. Cute, but terrible.

“Kill me.” she says. “It’ll be better than this headache.”

“I feel like I was run over.” you say.

The two of you slowly manage to get up and take a look in the mirror. You don’t like what you see about yourself. More than usual, anyway. Iori may or may not feel the same, but you know that you both need to at least wash up first. You feel sticky and gross and altogether horrible.

After a bit of freshening up - finger teeth-brushing, some face washing, advil-popping (taken from Idol Hammerspace) etc. - the two of you step out of the apartment and into a minefield of sleeping idols. Everywhere you might want to step is a hungover, sleeping girl. One wrong move and you assume you’ll face death.
Thankfully, the two of you “Twister” your way through the girls and take a silent elevator ride down to the ground floor. You take Iori to the cafe next door and order some coffee and breakfast, and some standalone shots of espresso in hopes that the caffeine might override your headache.

Your french toast arrives and the two of you dig in, still silent because even talking would flare up your headache. You look over to a corner booth and spot Anna, sitting and enjoying a breakfast with her father. They’re all smiles, laughing and talking quietly but animatedly and you can’t help but smile while you watch.

Iori turns around to see what you’re looking at, and looks back at you.

You can’t help but agree.

The two of you finish your meals and are entirely unfit for walking halfway across the city to the apartment you share.

You instinctively think of calling Ivan - and you’re sure he’d actually take you - but you think better of it. You and Iori can get someone else for once.

Your sure Ivan will have your back the next time you need him. Maybe Anna would too

Yayaoi is a crazy bitch, but only a handful of people know that. Otherwise she's a normal idol like any other. She was at the party, but much, much too drunk. And too early - she passed out before the ball dropped (and before she could fuck with Protag)
