Welcome to Academy City. The time is evening, the weather is fine, and the date is December 27.

You are Kyril Torikov and you were due for some upgrades. It wasn’t much to be honest. They just stuffed a bunch of religious and mythological texts in to your head through TESTAMENT. You had to be put under for that and it had taken most of the day. You were also missing half your right arm. Nayuta had taken it to be fitted with what she called a “stun” whip. You weren’t sure what exactly it did but it sounded sufficiently less than lethal. It was something you had asked for.

The fact that you had awoken missing part of an arm didn’t alarm you at all. It wasn’t a special, or even unfamiliar, experience. If anything, Christmas had been pretty crazy. It involved time travellers, Ben-jii’s self-termination curse, and literally stealing the heart of an older lady. The stolen heart had belonged to a supposedly immortal Code M. At least the City hadn’t blamed you for the three dozen corpses and other damage she had left in her wake. Even if they had found out, it was a fait accompli. There wasn’t much they could do about it, at least according to the time traveller.

You found the missing part soon enough. It felt nice to have a functioning right hand again. Maybe you’d have the chance to try out the new bells and whistles. Nayuta probably had the manual, and maybe other things to say before you left. On the other hand, you wanted to see Ben-jii. You had done something very illegal for his benefit, so you’d at least like to know he was okay. Thus you were,

Yesterday was uneventful. You had a feeling that things were going to pick up. You recalled Ben-jii’s words. He was supposed to still be in his beserk state still so it was probably a bad idea to go see him. Maybe tomorrow would be better. Thus you went to find Nayuta.

“Here’s the manual nii-chan,” she greeted.

She was at her battlestation and idly threw a small book over her shoulder. You pocketed it for future reading.

“There’s not a lot going on today but I do have a few things I want you to investigate,” she continued, “So, we got some footage from your fight with Ambrosia, as well as your game on Christmas. First, Ambrosia was going after a sword which you had identified as Code M. I’m not sure what the deal is with Code M and little girls but the higher ups want a closer look at it. We want to know who owns it and if they can be trusted. That sort of thing.”

You supposed someone had to run the background checks. Figured it’d be you.

“And the other?”

“Personal assessment mostly,” she answered, “The Slumlord hasn’t done much so far and we know she’s a pretty good at causing damage so we’re hoping we can come to an agreement.”

“You want her working for the City.”

“‘In a more official capacity’, according to the briefing,” Nayuta quoted, “So pick one so I can have Kaoru-chan take care of the other.”

Well, work was work.

Investigative work wasn’t your forte. Besides, Kyouko was always fun to be around. Hopefully she’d give you a reason to test out your new toy.

The time is now night, the weather is chilling, and the date remains unchanged.

School District 10 looked scary. It was night time after all. With the lack of intact infrastructure, the general decrepit look just seemed more ominous. Thankfully you had low light vision and even the odd thug seemed to shy away from you. That was good. Then you noticed that some of them were lying haphazardly along the streets. Someone had come this way before you. They had been knocked unconscious and it looked like you were getting closer and closer to the source of the disturbance. A crackling of electricity in a nearby alley was all you needed to know. Making sure your armband was on you ducked in to find a familiar electromaster.

Misaka Mikoto was working over a thug, or two. Honestly, you didn’t expect to meet the third ranked Level 5 here but she had made a habit of wandering after dark. At least, that’s what you were able to recall.

“Where is the Slumlord?” she asked.

“I don’t know.”

“Wrong answer,” then she zapped him, “Where is the Slumlord?”

The thug didn’t answer to her satisfaction again. You think she was firing off his pain receptors repeatedly. She paid no mind as the figure finally slumped down. His mind had been unable to take it and just shut down. Then she turned to you. Your HUD flickered. Her eyes fell on your armband and grimaced. You got a good look at her then. She wasn’t wearing the Tokiwadai uniform. That should have been enough of a clue. You asked her,

“What are you doing?”

Your voice was accompanied by more static than usual. You supposed that was due to her nature as an electromaster.

“Just looking for something,” she answered stiffly.

“Or someone,” her face tightened.

“Look, I’ll go back as soon as I find her.”

You just stared at her.

“It’s important,” she tried.

It was fortunate for her that you were looking for the same person that she was. The only difference was that you already knew where to go. You were just pulling her leg as it were.

“Come on,” you turned around, “before she goes to sleep.”

She almost didn’t follow you. Idly, you wondered if Kyouko even needed sleep.

“You’re not the usual member of Judgement are you?”

You simply turned your head, looking down at her briefly. The gesture answered her question with a resounding, “no,” as you continued.

The building ahead, which you recognise as where the Slumlord held court was eerily silent. Not even common vermin or insects stirred. The electromaster beside you shivered, making your HUD flicker again. It was just a step. One step forward and you found yourself surrounded by fog. It was a familiar blue and you hazarded that if it weren’t present the surroundings would be purely black, despite the impossibility of the thing.

“Where are we?” your companion voiced your thought.

“And here I was hoping it’d be a quiet night,” Kyouko’s voice bloomed from around you.

It was coming from every direction at once with equal magnitude. The distant sound of marching, emphasized by the clop-clopping of hooves, filled the brief silence.

“What can I do for you Pops? Sparky?”

“A job offer,” you replied.

“No thanks. Making sure these idiots don’t burn down the district is already a fulltime job,” she chuckled.

“Think of it as a promotion then,” you continued, “Apparently, the City likes the way you do business.”

“They just want their damn district back,” she pointed out.

“Probably, but it’s not like you’re Fidel Castro or anything. They just want to work with you in a more official capacity.”

“Pops, you know the City ain’t straight for kids like us,” there was a sigh, “I’ll hear ‘em out but I ain’t signing anything got it?”

“I’ll tell them you’re interested.”

“So what does Sparky want?”

You smiled from underneath your helmet you nudged the electromaster forward. It may have been a bit rougher than you had intended but apart from a tiny glare Sparky spoke,

“Someone stole something from me.”

“What makes you think I have it?” Kyouko’s voice shot back, “I steal a lot of things, I get that, but you’d think I’d remember stealing from you right? You’re better off asking Pops and his friends.”

“I know you didn’t,” Sparky explained, “But you were the one who had it before me.”

“Oh,” she paused, “Oooooh, yeah, that thing huh? Not my problem.”

“What? I just wanted to know the kind of people who’d steal it.”

“Still not my problem,” Kyouko repeated, “Go ask Pops.”

“Why me?” you asked.

“Dunno, Kuso said it was you jury, juris, jerry,” she gave up and blurted out, “You’re the expert.”

“Jurisdiction?” Sparky supplied.

“Yeah that.”

Sparky sighed and muttered something you almost missed,

“Bet she doesn’t even know who Fidel Castro is.”

“Hey I do too!” Kyouko heard it, “It’s a band of cigars.”

“Close enough,” you headed her off, “That’s all for tonight, come on let’s go.”

“Yeah yeah, way’s out behind ya, watch the door.”

“But you don’t have a door.”

“Exactly.”

In the interest of looking like you were doing your job, you continued to escort Sparky out of the district. The two of you didn’t exchange anything on the way back. You called in to report but Nayuta was sleeping at the keyboard when you so you just went home.

The time is now morning, the weather is chilly, and the date is now December 28.

You had messages when you woke up next. One was from Kaoru, all work related and business like. It looked like she was filling in for Nayuta today. The other was from Ben-jii. He wanted to see you and thank you for the change of heart. You had a whole day ahead of you.

You went and paid Ben-jii a visit. Nayuta was still asleep, according to Kaoru and she was only at the office to make sure you knew. You walked to Ben-jii’s place. He was sitting in his study enjoying a smoke and a drink. In a clear plastic box was a beating heart. You assumed it was not his. He gestured towards a seat as he produced another glass. You sat down. Since neither of you were going to talk just yet, your eyes wandered the room. There were several diplomas hanging along his walls. One of them was from the FBI Academy. The others were his degrees. One was from a university in Berkeley, the other from one in Arkham. His bookshelves were lined with books ranging from law and criminology to archaeology and cosmology.

You were handed a drink which was obviously alcoholic. With a small clink of glass, you accepted it somewhat gratefully.

“I kinda owe you big for that VERDICT,” he finally said, “I’ll make it up to you some day.”

You remained silence as you contemplated what kind of favour your should ask of him.

“Still I’m glad the whole shield thing is behind us,” he continued, “Especially since I don’t have to deal with that Ilija girl anymore.”

“What happened to her anyway?”

You hadn’t paid much attention to her after she had been escorted off, once and for all.

“They’re not sending her to the Reformatory if that’s what you’re worried about. It’s just house arrest. Hopefully she’ll stay there for the foreseeable future.”

She seemed to know him and him a bit about her so you wanted to ask,

“So, time traveller,” you started.

“Hmmm yeah, that’s kind of a long story,” Ben-jii gestured to one of his diplomas, “Miskatonic has always been a bit sink or swim so let’s just say time travel was involved in my final exam. That’s how I know how to identify them.”

“Because being chased by a Hound of Tindalos is rather obvious.”

“That and the putty,” he smiled, “Ilija would actually be the first time traveller I’ve met since graduation.”

“She called you Captain America.”

“I’m not sure what she means by that though,” he admitted, “I mean I am American but I was never in the armed forces or whatever. Was a Special Agent though, but that was a long time ago.”

“So she knows us, but in the future.”

“Or of us,” he corrected, “I don’t think she’s a short hopper. In time I mean, she’s probably jumped back several decades. Means there won’t be anyone to recognise her. It also means there’s a greater chance of paradoxes. Unless she has a better understanding of time I don’t know how she’s doing it. I’d love to ask her who she is but there’s a risk there as well.”

“So we shouldn’t go see her and bug her about.”

“Well we could, but like I said, it’s a risk,” he repeated, “I hate time travel.”

“You’re the expert,” you conceded, “Let’s get back to work.”

“Sure thing, we’re walking though,” Ben-jii agreed, “Need a replacement windshield, among other things.”

That sucked but it wasn’t like there was anything you could do about it. You had to feel bad for him. A car was high maintenance so this was doubly true for Anti-Skill given the situations they found themselves in. You didn’t think you could afford one.

“Yeah, most of my salary goes to the car,” Ben-jii seemed to have picked up on it, “And I make much more than you.”

You ignored that last comment.

Kaoru was sitting and staring at the rows of monitors, half captivated and intimidated by the whole set up. Napping on a pile of pillows was Nayuta. At your entrance, Kaoru turned quickly and shushed you. Not wanting to wake up Nayuta, the three of you talked in the next room.

“I reported in this morning but since she looked tired I asked her to take a nap,” Kaoru explained, “Since we are here, how are you feeling Benjamin?”

“Much better, nothing a few days of bed rest to get myself back in the game,” he greeted.

“What have we got today?” you interjected.

“I read your report this morning and I think this confirms a few things I had suspected. Misaka Mikoto is the owner of the Code M artefact we were looking into.”

“That doesn’t sound too bad,” Ben-jii remarked, “From what I hear I’d trust her with that.”

“The sword is called Joyeuse.”

Ben-jii’s expression fell. You could tell what he was thinking.

“You and your big mouth.”

“Please tell me she hasn’t lost it,” he pleaded instead.

Kaoru’s look wasn’t very encouraging.

“This morning, as soon as office hours were open, Branch Office 177 reported a theft of a sword matching the description of Joyeuse. Branch Office 49 has been brought in because of our expertise in handling Code M. Not to mention that it’s our jurisdiction as well.”

[1/2]
>>
>>37295012
With that, she stopped and stared and Ben-jii.

“Oh right, technically I suppose I am your direct superior at the moment,” Ben-jii admitted, “Three things first, interview the owner of the object, interview the one who gave her the object, and interview any witnesses to the theft. So, let’s split up gang.”

Given that you’ve already met the owner, Misaka Mikoto, you went to go see her. Kaoru went to see the one who had gifted said owner the weapon whilst Ben-jii went to interview witnesses. Scheduling wasn’t too complicated though a bit roundabout. Sparky had agreed to meet you at Branch Office 177 so that you could take a statement. The downside of having no fixed headquarters, you thought.

“Huh, I didn’t expect that to work,” were Sparky’s first words when you entered.

“What did you not expect to work onee-sama?” Shirai asked, “You do have a tendency to take the law in to your own hands.”

You coughed, or approximated one through the helmet speaker.

“Of course,” now it was Shira’s turn to sigh, “VERDICT. Well, you’re in good hands onee-sama. Try to be helpful.”

She vacated her seat rather quickly as you came in.

“So,” Sparky turned to you, “You wanted to take a statement?”

You merely nodded and proceeded. A few facts jumped out at you. It was Asuka that had given her the sword. Supposedly, it was an early Christmas present. Before that, it had been in the possession of the Slumlord of the Strange. It had gone missing in the morning of the 26th.

“So you went back to see the Slumlord because you thought she wanted it back?”

“Well yes, and, not really,” Sparky was unsure, “Here, let me quote Kudou. ‘I had taken the liberty of removing such a burden from an acquaintance of mine.’ Or something like that. I didn’t think it’d be the rumoured Slumlord.”

“Well I think that’s plenty of information,” you said.

It wasn’t much but at least it pointed back towards Asuka and Kyouko. Was there anything else you wanted to ask Sparky though?

“Anything you could tell me about the sword? What makes it so special perhaps?”

“It’s kinda pretty I guess, and it’s actually sharpened,” Sparky continued, “Nearly cut myself by accident so I had to get a scabbard. Apart from that, it’s my Christmas present. I got a sword for a Christmas present. It’s from Kudou of all people. Why would I not treasure it?”

“You tell me.”

“I guess she was trying to cheer me up or something. I mean, we weren’t really friends but then we lost,” she trailed off, “We lost someone. I guess it brought us closer together, even if she was kinda, off.”

“I see, but let’s get back to the sword,” you interrupted, “Why would she think it was a burden of some kind?”

“Because someone else wants it.”

“Apparently,” you paused for a moment, “Has anyone strange approached you in the past few days? Like, they had a fixation with your sword or Ability Users that seemed off?”

“No, I don’t think so,” she paused, “I didn’t go around showing it off or anything. Except on Christmas I went to get a scabbard for it. Kuroko and the girls were holding on it for me while I went to take care of business. There was a whole fight in front of them but I don’t think they got away.”

Several thoughts came to your mind. You wanted to refuse. Protocol demanded it, and she’d be safer. Even if she was powerful enough to take care herself Code M operated on a different kind of paradigm. If you refused she may take matters in her own hands. That was another risk on its own.

“This is highly irregular,” you began.

Before she could protest you continued,

“Can you promise to behave?”

“Behave?” she asked.

“Your Ability, it interferes with my hardware.”

“Oh.”

Her indignity became apologetic.

“Okay.”

“Then come on, my team are regrouping for lunch.”

The time is lunch, the weather is comfy, and the date remains unchanged.

Kaoru was not alone when you got there. Sitting next to her was your ex-girlfriend Asuka. The two of you sat opposite them. At both ends of the table sat Nayuta, who was smiling mischievously, and Ben-jii, who was fiddling with an unlit fag.

“I have to say nii-chan, you work fast.”

You said nothing. Sparky opened her mouth to protest but that seemed to have died in her mouth since she pointed at your boss and said,

“You!”

“Yes me,” Nayuta agreed happily.

“So what did you find out?” you asked your colleagues.

“The reason the French went to war with England,” Ben-jii huffed.

You turned to the other two young ladies.

“Well it was never our intention to start a war,” Asuka shrugged, “It wasn’t like I could come back without a souvenir for Misaka.”

“Wait, my souvenir started the war between England and France?” Sparky was incredulous.

“And Germany too,” Asuka corrected, “They think the British took it.”

“That’s the first I’ve heard about that,” Nayuta was sincerely noting it down.

“Then we have to give it back,” Sparky continued.

“Naïve as always Misaka, did you seriously believe they would stop simply because you returned the sword?” Asuka shot back.

“We can table that for now,” Nayuta intervened, “Let’s not count our chickens before they’re hatched.”

“Indeed,” Kaoru spoke, “If we could use the sword to negotiate peace between the three belligerent nations then that is all fine and good. But we cannot do that if we don’t have the sword in the first place.”

“You’re right,” Sparky deflated, “Jeez Kudou you always find the best gifts.”

“I try.”

Sparky was being sarcastic but Asuka was amused all the same.

“So, this is little taskforce of yours,” Nayuta spoke to you, “Do you have any ideas on how to proceed?”

“Who’s after the sword specifically?” you asked.

“I believe the Paladins of Charlemagne are,” Kaoru answered, “And not alone. If we are patient we’ll catch them eventually. They need a way out and we can trap them there.”

“Risky,” Nayuta said, “They could get away.”

Kaoru nodded but otherwise didn’t object.

“I think this is a problem of not enough HUMINT,” Ben-jii added, “All we need is just one sighting and it’ll be all over for them. You have people in the know right?”

The last part was directed at Asuka who nodded. Well you think it was better to,

“Take Kaoru, lay a snare and prepare for when we have to take them down. Asuka and I will go see a few friends.”

“And hopefully find some trouble along the way,” Asuka added pleasantly, “I was wondering when you would ask me out on a date again.”

“Hey, what about me?” Sparky seemed left out.

Well to be fair you weren’t exactly sure where to place her. She couldn’t go with the friendly Code M team. Accompanying Asuka and yourself would probably make her gag herself. That or she’d feel incredibly awkward. Thankfully Asuka came to your rescue here,

“Are you not an electromaster Misaka? Do you not have a free pass through every network in the city?”

The way she emphasised ‘network’ was pretty neat.

“Ahahaha, sure, she can work with me,” Nayuta chimed in, “We’ll let the stupid people handle the legwork.”

You were pretty sure that was just a joke to appease Sparky and not a jab at you and yours. Still, it was a productive lunch meeting.

Episode End. See you next Friday.

I think we did.

Anyway, nighty night

What happened to the body of the chick whose heart we took?
>>
>>37300230
Standard protocol is to keep her deep frozen permanently. Maybe Ben-jii will return the heart some time later.
>>
>>37300097
thanks for running

I hope #2 references Kyril no longer have to poop.

I don't like our chances against mind over dark matter

or is he dead by now? still behind in reading
>>
Is it really that hard for her to figure out Kyril is still alive?
>>
>>37300374
That'd be telling.

>>37300394
Even the 'definitive' records lists him as dead it isn't like people who know blab at the first opportunity.
>>
>>37300440
>only Kyril blabs about he is alive.

how mad will Sparky be when she finds out?
>>
>>37300440
Does Kyrils mom still live with him?
>>
>>37300491
We must live the lie until the small bombs are removed.
>>
>>37300510
I just hope she leaves the eyebrows (or what's left of them) alone.
>>
>>37300491
I have no words to describe it. Partly because I haven't really thought about it yet.

>>37300495
She doesn't but I suspect there will be unplanned visits.

>Even the 'definitive' records lists him as dead it isn't like people who know blab at the first opportunity.

It's pretty save that way as well. Thinking on it it's hard for a dead man to be traced back to anything.

Will Kyril have to attend school as VERDICT after Christmas break is over?
>>
>>37300742
hopefully it will be some online/UNC essay only "courses"
>>
>>37300742
VERDICT is too cool for school. Though thinking on it couldn't he like download all the info he needs.
>>
>>37300742
What kind of dog of the state goes to school?
>>
>>37300818
obedience school!

*rim shot*
>>
>>37300818
I swear I see him sitting there in a classroom surrounded by people with his helmet still on.
>>
>>37300742
Well I don't want to spoil too much but even ghost members have to show up some time right?
