You're awoken at dawn by the obnoxious blaring of your alarm clock. With an annoyed sigh you roll onto your side, reaching out to switch off the infernal contraption. You take a few moments to bask in the comfortable warmth of your bed before reluctantly throwing off the covers and swinging your legs over the edge of the bed.

In a half-awake daze you shuffle into the bathroom, shedding your boxers and stepping into the glass box that is your shower. A blast of cold water serves to jolt you awake, and prompts you to fiddle with the shower knob until such a time as a more comfortable temperature is reached. Once you've washed yourself, brushed your teeth, and taken care of your morning constitutional you wander out of the bathroom and see to getting dressed.

You'll probably need to actually go out in public today, but you're not going into the office. Thus, you opt for a pair of khakis and a casual button down. Taking into account the weather you also pick out an old flight jacket from your navy days, replete with various patches to indicate your rank, allegiance, role, and unit. Sadly it's lacking in anything to indicate your scant accomplishments in the military. Navigators are not known for downing enemy fighters or repelling boarders, especially not during peace time.

Thus dressed to face the day, you pull on a pair of sneakers and head downstairs. Sally is there to greet you, laying on the tiled floor of the foyer. She springs to her feet with surprising agility considering the bandages covering her abdomen, but instead of jumping up to greet you she merely nudges your thigh with the top of her head. Seems she's still not quite feeling back to normal.

You make your way through your home to the kitchen and quickly whip up a breakfast of bacon and eggs, along with a pot of the blackest coffee to drive the last vestiges of sleep from your clouded mind. As you sit down at the kitchen island to break your fast, you begin to wonder about the task of the day.

You think you're fairly well equipped in terms of weaponry, clothing, and camping gear; however, you may want to look into body armor considering you'll be in a barren, isolated wasteland with a man who has previously murdered you in cold blood. You might also wish to head down to the shooting range and reacquaint yourself with what it's like to fire a weapon.

Claire is supposed to have her father drive her home around one in the afternoon. You'll want to be here to greet her. Last but not least, there is a world of spirits out there for you to explore. You might try a spot of hunting.

>Just relax until Claire get home, watch a movie or something.

You decide to do some research online once you've finished your breakfast, and maybe find a good place to buy military grade body armor. You doubt you'll be spoiled for choice in that regard, not many places sell the sort of thing you're looking for. At least, not openly. There are all sorts of special permits a vendor needs to get and most places don't bother.

It doesn't take long for you to polish off your eggs and bacon, you give what few leftovers you have to Sally before filling up her bowls with dry food and water. Once your dog has been cared to, you make your way back upstairs to your bedroom. You have a fairly massive desktop complete with an old fashioned tower. Not the most ergonomic of computing options, but certainly the most powerful and cheapest in the long run.

Taking a seat behind your desk you boot up your computer. Your dual screens flare to life, the windows logo displayed briefly before a log-on screen appears. Microsoft collapsed late in the twenty-first century due to backroom corporate dealings that never quite became public knowledge. Regardless, one of their programmers leaked the source code for most of their products and open source development continued.

You type in your password and strike the enter key, the log-on screen replaced by a full suite of read outs and a few scattered shortcuts. You've got connection and proxy information, as well as a number of buttons you can use to quickly deactivate all network connectivity or perform any number of other operations. It's all fairly standard in this day and age.

Opening up a web browser reveals the google search bar, largely unchanged save for the innumerable notifications from social media platforms and news readouts that clutter the page. Most of the clutter is from services owned and operated by the Google megacorporation, services you're obligated to use if you want to take advantage of the largest and most comprehensive catalog of information in recorded human history.

(1/2)
>>
You begin your search by simply searching the word 'spirits'. You find a number of articles related to 'school spirit' or 'national spirit', but nothing particularly relevant to the metaphysical concept of a spirit. You do find something of minor interest. Opening one link you find it directs you to a website for a church of some sort headquartered in the Appalachian Mountains. They call themselves the Brothers and Sisters of the Harmonious Aether. They preach a rejection of monotheistic religious practices and instead revere the 'Gods of our ancestors'. Whatever that means. They don't actually elucidate the nature of their deities on their website.

You copy down an address deep in the backwoods of West Virginia and move on. Sadly, besides a wiki article relating the various meanings of the word 'Spirit' and the nigh ubiquitous belief in spirits of some sort by nearly every culture on the planet you don't find much else of interest. Instead you turn your attention to finding a place to buy body armor.

It doesn't take more than a simple search to bring up a gun store in Richmond operating out of an old abandoned National Guard armory that sells military grade body armor in addition to rare and hard to find weaponry. You type the address into a mapping app on your phone, directions appearing at the bottom of the screen.

You google the name of that cult in the mountains just to see if anything interesting pops up in association with their name. There are a few news articles relating their charitable works and the various ways in which they've given back to the community, and of course their website. However, you also find an article from a few years back related to a number of missing persons cases in Pocahontas County, West Virginia. The same place that cult is headquartered.

Apparently a number of cult members were suspected, but ultimately acquitted when the bodies of various tourist and locals were found in a cave in the hills. Not much of them was left after the wolves got to them. Ever since wolves were reintroduced to the region two hundred some-odd years ago the number of animal attacks has sky rocketed. You don't know who thought that was a good idea.

You close your browser and put the computer to sleep, deciding to try out some of these powers of yours in the backyard where you hopefully won't burn anything down. You make your way downstairs and into the kitchen, pulling open the sliding glass door that opens into the fenced yard. Sally bolts past you, doing a slow (for her) lap around the yard while you shut the door behind you.

There isn't much in the way of decoration in your yard. Some lawn furniture, a covered hot tub, and some scattered dog toys are just about all there is to see. You consider how you want to apply your new found powers, for now ignoring Sally as she butts her head against your thigh. She has a rope toy in her mouth and seems eager to work off some excess energy.

You run your fingers through your hair, trying to decide what to do. You don't know if shooting fire into the air is a good idea. It's not what you'd describe as 'subtle' and you have a pretty broad definition of the word. Stepping seems fairly harmless, and you felt compelled to try it yesterday. You decide you'll try it now, even though you don't feel the abundance of spiritual power you did after consuming the jackalope.

You focus on a point at the opposite end of the yard, picturing yourself vanishing into thin air and reappearing where you will it. You brace yourself, anticipating the disorienting lurch of rapid motion. However, nothing happens. You're left staring into empty space like an idiot for a solid ten minutes.

Eventually you relax, sighing. You decide you'll try a different tactic. You simply close your eyes and picture the opposite end of the yard. You feel an odd sensation, a tugging in your gut. A longing for something you can't quite put your finger on.

A sound like paper tearing fills the air and you feel yourself lurching forward. Your eyes snap open instinctively to reveal a barren landscape rushing past you. The land is covered in a thick, impenetrable fog and rifts tear the sky asunder. They reveal glimpses of strange, alien landscapes. Of towering structures and the darkest forest. You feel a lump form in your throat as you look down to find the ground far, far beneath you. You must be a hundred feet in the air.

In an instant it all vanishes. There's that sound like paper tearing and a soft pop as you reappear on the opposite end of your yard. Your legs give out beneath you as they come to rest once more on solid ground, your stomach roiling. Just keeping down your breakfast proves an almost impossible task, though you manage.
(1/2)
>>
Sally whines as she trots across the yard, sniffing you warily. You reach up to pet her, but she flinches away. Frowning, you push yourself into a seated position. Sally has backed a few feet away, staring at you with wide, terror filled eyes. You glance down at yourself, but don't find anything overly strange. Black smoke boils off your skin in a number of places, but there are no wounds to be seen.

After a few minutes you stop smoking and Sally calms down. She approaches once more and sniffs you, apparently deeming you acceptable because she proceeds to bump the top of her head into your chest affectionately. You scratch behind her ears absentmindedly while considering your next move.

Realization dawns on you slowly as you push yourself to your feet and brush the grass and detritus from your clothing. It's only as you're crossing the yard and sinking into a padded wicker chair that it finally sinks in what you've just done.

You can fucking teleport.

The implications are astounding. You just violated who knows how many laws of nature. Probably something about thermodynamics and the speed of light and who knows what the hell else. You were never really the 'physics' type but even you know enough to say that teleportation is an impossibility. A flight of fancy best reserved for fantasy novels.

You wonder how far you can teleport, and to where. If it's only places you've seen or if anywhere will do. Could you simply appear in Paris at the base of the Eiffel Tower on a whim? Show up in Saint Peter's Basilica during Easter Mass? Take a jaunt over to London, Berlin, Istanbul, Beijing, Cairo, or Tokyo?

You lean your head against the wooden back of the chair and let out a deep sigh, forcing those thoughts from your mind. It would be horribly irresponsible to just go jumping around the world, especially when you don't know what sort of consequences there might be to stepping. That black smoke which was boiling off your body concerns you, to say the least.

You wish you had some sort of instruction manual, or someone to talk to. You begin to wonder if perhaps you DO have someone to talk to, and you simply haven't reached out to them. Reaching up to your neck you run your fingers over the lump of your Adam's apple, where you know the sigil of Gluttony lies.

You focus on a mental image of the strange, headless figure of Gluttony. Well, you suppose he wasn't really headless. He had a head, it was just more gaping maw than it was anything else. You recall the strange palor of his skin and the way the air around him seemed distorted. You try to draw him forth, to drag his consciousness from the markings on your throat.

Rolled 8, 4, 9 = 21 (3d10)

>>37400156
I'm flattered someone would think to still use that label.

Dice Atheists unite!
>>
Sadly, all you're met with is sadistic laughter. It seems to echo through your consciousness, reverberating in your skull. A deep, throaty laugh. No matter what you try, no matter how you plead or threaten or bargain, you fail to get anything else from the spirit. Just that cruel, echoing laughter.

Eventually you give up. Your head is beginning to throb painfully and you've no desire to find out how bad your headache can get. You reach down and briefly scratch behind Sally's ear, she had curled up next to your chair while you focused on your attempts to draw out Gluttony.

You stand and stretch, shaking some of the weariness from your limbs. That done you retreat inside. It takes some time but you manage to find some ibuprofen in the downstairs bathroom and take two, hoping that will put a stop to the throbbing ache in your temples.

Nursing a glass of water you return to the den, a readout on your television screen indicating that the time is ten in the morning. You have about three hours until your wife is supposed to be getting back from her parent's house. Probably less, knowing her. You suppose you could voyage into the woods and see about hunting down a spirit, or perhaps voyage into downtown to buy that body armor. You still have time, if only barely enough.

Then again, with your new found ability to 'Step' you might not need to worry about getting home in time. You could simply appear in an instant whenever you please. You wonder if you could just pop into existence in front of the gun store, or in an alley adjascent.

You decide you'll simply step to the gun store. Not only will it test your new found ability's limits, but it will allow you to actually accomplish something fairly important. As tantalizing as the concept of exploring New York with its elegant skywalks and various architectural wonders, among them one of the massive tethers of the space elevator just a hundred miles off the coast of Manhattan, you have more important things to attend to.

The Manhattan Tether was the third of its kind ever built, the first being placed in the international waters of the equatorial pacific late in the twenty-first century while the second was constructed in the Mediterranean Sea by a coalition of European and Middle Eastern governments. There is a fourth tether in the Sea of Japan built by a coalition of East Asian governments and a fifth in the Arabian Sea. They connect to vast space stations in geostationary orbit which serve as shipyards, tourist attractions, and launching platforms.

You reminisce briefly on past visits to the Manhattan Tether. It was where you were sent up to join the crew of the USS Adventurer after you joined the navy. You spent a fair amount of time on the US operated space station, it was something of a home port for you. However, from what you understand it's fallen into a bit of disrepair lately. There have been reports of breaches and leaks every few months for years now. Its funding has been repeatedly cut in favor of major projects underway in the asteroid belt.

(1/4)
>>
You shake off such thoughts, focusing instead on the present. You have a task to accomplish. You retreat upstairs to your bedroom and tap a key on your computer's keyboard, the screens flaring back to life. You type in the address of the gun store you plan on stepping to and bring up images of the surrounding area. There's an alleyway, fairly narrow and secluded, just across the street from the abandoned National Guard armory the gun store inhabits. It actually seems to be in quite the terrible neighborhood, you're fairly certain that man standing on the corner in the picture you've found is a dealer. He certainly looks the part.

Regardless, you take in as much detail as you can from the picture you've found. Once you feel prepared you lean back in your office chair and close your eyes, picturing the alleyway and its various detritus. The rusted trash bins pressed against the wall. The piss-stained mattress sitting at the back of the alley. The empty bottles of liquor scattered about the area.

You feel something tugging at your guts, and there's a sound like paper tearing. Your eye snap open and you once more find yourself soaring through that strange, fractured realm. You're lower to the ground this time, and flying much, much faster. The fog which blankets the surface of this alien landscape seems to press in around you, cloying at you. It fills your throat like mucous as you try to take a breath, choking the air from your lungs. Just as you grow panicked, there is a sound like paper tearing and a soft 'pop'.
(2/4)
>>
Your legs give almost immediately but you manage to support yourself against the wall of the alley you find yourself in. This time you don't manage to keep your breakfast down, doubling over and spilling the contents of your stomach all over the grime-crusted pavement. The rancid stench of stale piss and hot garbage fills the air around you, doing nothing to settle your stomach.

Once you've finished tossing your cookies, you straighten up and inspect yourself. You're surprised to find you have no proper hands at the moment. Rather, your arms merely end in incorporeal wisp of black smoke. You're worried for a moment, but as the minutes tick past your flesh slowly returns, the smoke vanishing. While concerning, there doesn't seem to be anything wrong with your hands. They don't hurt, nor do they seem any different. You just didn't have them for a while.

You step tentatively out of the alleyway, relieved to see that nobody seems to have noticed you. If they did, they didn't pay much attention to you. A man puking in an alleyway before noon probably isn't all that spectacular a sight in these parts. After you've straightened your clothes and wiped off your mouth, you cross the nearly abandoned streets to the old armory on the other side.

There is little to outwardly announce that this place is a store. No signs of any sort. The door is a thick, rusted metal thing. Were it not for the tiny little 'Open!' card hanging from the front you would have no idea this place was inhabited at all.

Pulling the door open you're greeted by the familiar smells of gunpowder, sweat, and cigarette smoke. The interior of the armory has been gutted, and replaced by row upon row of wooden crates, gun racks, and metal stands. There are no display cases, nor anything to stop someone from simply grabbing one of the guns and making a break for it. Then again, you suppose trying to rob a gun store would be rather silly.

There is a man sitting behind a tiny window at the opposite end of the room, a magazine clutched his hands. A woman proudly presents her naked breast to the readers on the cover, making it fairly easy to guess what sort of magazine it is. You're sure he reads it for the articles. Regardless, he sets it aside once he hears the jangling of a bell, though you see no bell hanging by the door. Probably some automated chime.

“Welcome to Larry's House of Conspicuously Inexpensive Firearms. What are you looking for?” He ask, voice gravely. You'd estimate he's about forty five or so, his hair hasn't started to turn grey but he might dye it. He's dressed casually in an old jacket and a t-shirt, a number of gadgets strapped to his person.

“I take it you're Larry?” You ask, whilst inspecting a rifle of curious make situated on top of a pile of various rifles. It appears to essentially be a rectangular hunk of metal with a barrel sticking out the end. You're not even really sure how one goes about loading the thing.

“People call me that. My real name's Longin, but Larry's easier to say. Less Polish too. Nobody wants to be Polish. Now do you intend to buy something or just waste time?” He states this matter-of-factly. You're not sure what's so bad about the Poles. From what you understand they have a rich history.

“I was hoping to buy military grade body armor, I saw your shop was a licensed vendor. I just need a vest, not the full-body suit. How much will that run me?”

You set down the strange rifle and cross the room, coming to a stop in front of the tiny window. There's a door adjacent, a heavy lock baring entry. You can see that behind the counter, in addition to a number of exotic weapons such as a traditionally plane or tank mounted laser cannon and a grenade launcher decorated with gold filigree, the vendor keeps a number of mannequins wearing body armor of various shapes and sizes. You spy a vest in the back that looks like exactly what you need, a corporate security vest with gleaming metallic plates coated in an ablative material to absorb laser fire.

“Well that depends entirely on you, guy. You happen to have a permit to buy military grade body armor?”

You used to, although you let it expire a few years after you left the military. Still, there is some leeway when it comes to the field of corporate repo, flash a badge around and most places will sell anyway out of the hope you'll remember them the next time the bill collectors rolls around. Then again, not a whole lot of people like the repo man. That might just inspire him to jack up his prices, especially if he doesn't have any reason to fear a corporate repossession officer.

You reach into your back pocket and retrieve your wallet, unfolding it with a perhaps unnecessary flourish to reveal the golden badge of a corporate repossession officer. “This ought to serve just as well. Afraid I don't have my permit with me.”

The man glances from you, to the badge, and back to you. “You don't look corporate.” He states, a suspicious tone to his voice. “Look more like a cop, if you ask me. Guess I'm not here to criticize your dress sense.”

You flip your wallet closed and tuck it into your back pocket, waiting while he makes his way over to the stands of mannequins and detaches the vest of gleaming white plates. It slides off over the mannequin's head easily enough and he hauls it up by a handle on the back of the vest. He seems to struggle with the weight of it as he drags it over to the counter, but you don't recall vest of this make being overly heavy. Maybe he's just weak.

He grunts as he lifts the vest up and onto the counter, setting it down on the metallic surface with a heavy thud. Pushing it aside he leans forward, resting his elbows on the counter top and taking a few deep breaths. Once he's caught his breath, he names his price. “That'll be seven hundred dollars.”

That's a steal, considering what you're getting. Two thousand dollars is the low end price for most military grade equipment. His stuff really is conspicuously cheap. What price does he get this stuff at if seven hundred dollars brings in a profit?

You reach into your pocket and pull out a fat wad of cash, counting out seven hundred dollar bills and passing them across the counter. The man scoops them up silently and pushes across the body armor.

You heft it up by the handle on the back, weighing it in your hand. It's really not that heavy, it feels about the same as you recall. You take a moment to scratch at one of the ablative coating on one of the plates and are pleased to find that it doesn't flake off. A lot of the time on the models you got the ablative coating had been reapplied so much that there was nothing left of it. Of course, you had military rather than corporate models. Same basic design, but from what you understand the materials differed.

You nod to the man. “Pleasure doing business with you. I imagine we'll be seeing more of one another in the future.”

Larry, or Longin, shrugs his shoulders disinterestedly. “Yeah, sure. As long as you've got the cash I've got the stock. Anything else you want?”

“I think that'll be all for now. Have a good one.” Longin responds with a grunt, you take that as your cue to leave. Stepping onto the gravel walk which surrounds the armory you shut the heavy metal door behind you and drag your phone out of your pocket to check the time. It's a few minutes shy of ten thirty. This really hasn't taken much time at all. Pretty clean and simple, all things considered. Much more convenient than buying from those weapons smugglers on the coast.

You tuck your phone away and consider your options. You should probably stop by home and put the armor away. You're rapidly running out of closet space in your bedroom. You might want to consider turning one of the spare bedrooms into an armory or something of the sort. Just a place to store all your now manifold weapons and the ammunition that goes with it, along with your supplies.

(1/2)
>>
Your thoughts are interrupted by your phone's ringtone, a simple bell chime. Fishing it once more out of your pocket you see a picture of your boss displayed above the green and red displays to accept and deny the call respectively. You still can't get over how casually she dresses. A tank top and jeans hardly seems like proper office wear.

You see no reason to deny the call, so you tap the green button and raise the phone to your ear. “Hey Molly, what's up? Got my tickets booked?”

Judging by how breathless she sounds, you'd guess she just got done working out. Does she do anything else all day? “Yeah, yeah. You're leaving in two days aboard the 9 AM train to Puerto Santa Cruz. It's a fourteen hour train ride, not fun. Better than flying though. Anyway, from Puerto Santa Cruz you'll take a plane to McMurdo Base on the southern coast of Antarctica. You'll need to get to Mount Sidley by snowmobile.”

It all sounds simple enough. “Sounds good. I assume I'm boarding at the Staples Mill Road station?” You've heard they've renovated it recently. It's the oldest rail station in Greater Richmond still in operation and the largest as well. It's turned into something of a palace with the rise of high speed rail for long distance travel.

Molly's response is dismissive. “Yeah yeah, Station Mill. Listen, that's not what I called about. I was doing some digging and refreshing my memory, I'll be honest I didn't really do my usual research on this job since I didn't think anyone would ever willingly volunteer for it. Anyway, one of Doctor Knightly's men came stumbling out of the waste frostbitten and half dead babbling nonsense. He's still at McMurdo station. I suggest you start your investigation by interviewing him when you get there.”

You won't normally be required to roll to step, unless there are circumstances which make it more difficult than usual. In this case, it's because you're carrying something. Other instances which would require a roll are trying to take someone with you, trying to step to a place you've only heard about, and a number of other things I'll let you find out about as you go along.

You make your way across the street to the abandoned alleyway you appeared in just a half hour ago. You swear there's a word for what you're doing that probably fits it better than teleportation. After all, you're not really instantaneously transferring from one point in space to another. Rather, you seem to use some sort of alternate dimension to transport yourself rapidly. Perhaps apparition would be a better term?

Well, whatever. It's not exactly important what you call it. It's basically teleporting. You keep a tight grip on the armor you bought as you picture first your upstairs bathroom, and then your back yard. You suppose the upstairs bathroom wouldn't be a bad choice if you wanted to avoid mess, but the back yard seems better. You can puke your guts out and just blame it on Sally. The perfect crime.

You hear that ripping sound once more and the increasingly familiar lurch as you're dragged into that strange realm of endless grey plains and fog. Unlike previously, you note that you're not the only person traveling the waste this time. For the briefest of instants you catch sight of a figure standing in the fag, watching you soar through the air. It quickly fades from sight, but you can't help but wonder who or what it might have been. A native, perhaps?

There's a ripping sound and a soft pop as you land on your feet in your back yard. You stumble, but manage to avoid falling over. You don't feel nearly as nauseous either. Presumably because your stomach is empty. Sadly you no longer have hands, and as a result you've dropped the armor you were carrying. Fortunately you dropped it in the grass, rather than in the fog that blankets the floor of that strange realm you pass through.

Your hands reform after a few minutes. You try shaking your arms to speed up the process but you don't think it actually accomplished much of anything. Regardless, you pluck up your armor and carry it with you upstairs once you have manipulating appendages again. Sally doesn't greet you at the door as you were expecting. Rather, she seems to be taking an afternoon nap on her dog bed in the corner of the den. Just as well, she needs her rest.

Pulling open your closet door in your bedroom, you're greeted by stacks upon stacks of clothing, supplies, ammunition, and guns. You set the armor atop the pile, but wonder if perhaps you ought to bring some of this weaponry along on your hunt.

You stare at the armor for a short while before ultimately deciding to wear it after all. You shed your jacket and hoist the armor over your head. It's a bit difficult to slide into but there is elastic material on the sides to make it a bit easier. Eventually you manage to force your head through the collar and your arms past the short... well, you suppose they're sort of pauldrons.

You snap a few ties closed and cinch the armor tight, adjusting the crotch guard so it won't be slapping you in the nuts with every step. That done you shrug your jacket back on. You don't bother to zip it up, since you don't anticipate meeting anyone in the woods. You don't really have neighbors. There are houses close to your own, but you've probably seen the people living in them a handful of times over the past seven years.

That done you open the case which contains your Gewehr 98 and gently pick it up. You think for a moment you hear the baying of dogs, and the scream of a shell as it arcs overhead. However, the sensations pass. You take a moment to load one round into the internal magazine since you fired one off the last time you voyaged into the woods. You've already got a round chambered and the safety is already on, so you simply sling the rifle over one shoulder.

The last thing you do before you go is grab the four loaded stripper clips for your rifle and tuck them into your jacket pockets and affix the bayonet to the end of the rifle. Perhaps a bit odd, going through the trouble of affixing the bayonet. You just get the sense that it's a good idea. That it will save your life one day. That it's the last line of defense when those damned French bastards come charging across no man's land after three months without resupply.

(1/2)
>>
You shake off the false memories and turn sharply on your heels, marching stiffly out of the room. It's only after you've shut the door behind you that you realize what you're doing and adopt a more natural gait. You can't say that you like the effect this rifle has on your thoughts. It just feels insidious. You can't deny it's a powerful weapon, though.

A short walk brings you to the trail head. The forest is, of course, quite dark even at this hour of the day. Unlike your previous trip into the woods, it doesn't seem at all insidious. Sun dapples the detritus that is scattered across the forest floor, the sounds of insects and animals filling the air with a subtle hum of noise.

You decide to journey off the beaten path. It's unlikely you'll find any of the truly powerful spirits so close to signs of civilization. You don't really have to worry about getting lost because you can simply Step home in an instant. That in mind, once the trail head has been lost behind you to the foliage you turn and start to tear your way through the underbrush, rifle pointed before you. Yet another use for the bayonet, should you be surprised you'll be ready with a weapon. No need to aim and fire.

You quickly find yourself lost. The forest seems to blend together, one tree looking much the same as any other. Normally you'd be concerned, but not today. Not knowing what you do now. As you roam the woods, the atmosphere seems to change. The canopy overhead thickens, choking off the vestiges of light which shined down from above. Though plunged into darkness, it is nowhere near total. In fact, you find yourself able to see fairly well. Thus, you continue on without a care in the world.

You start to see eyes, glowing in the darkness at the edges of your vision. They shine out from between the trees and from the midst of the underbrush. Full of hunger and longing. The first time you saw them they gave you pause, but they vanished only a moment later. As you wander deeper into the woods you see them more frequently, hovering there at the edges of your awareness. Waiting for you to let down your guard.

You grow tired of this creature, whatever it may be, hounding you. Indeed, as any sane person would. It's unsettling, to see eyes following you through a dark and vaguely ominous wood. You challenged the creature, darting towards its hiding place amidst the brush and jabbing your bayonet into the shrubbery. You felt it bury itself into something solid, and pulled it free with a wet squelch. Unfortunately when you parted the shrubbery all you found was an odd mushroom filled with some sort of oily paste.

You searched the forest for any sign of the creature following you, but found none. You even bothered to look up and failed to spot a thing. Nobody ever looks up, you were so certain the spirit would be banking on that simple fact instilled in many a generation by horror movies.

After perhaps an hour of wandering the woods hopelessly lost you came across something of interest. A peaceful brook, running along the forest floor. The canopy overhead didn't allow any light to shine through, but luminous mushrooms cast the stream in a variety of blue and green shades. Upstream, you noted a light in the distance. It shined a dim grey, though you saw no source. Downstream the brook seemed to continue on forever, vanishing over the distant horizon.

You turn upstream and begin to march your way along the edge of the brook. You're painfully aware of time passing, each second feeling as if a year to your mind. You find yourself constantly checking your phone to see what the time is. Much to your dismay it seems to leap around at random. You've either been in these woods for fifteen years, negative five minutes, six hours, or no time has passed at all. Your phone can't seem to decide.

You wrinkle your nose in confusion. Your phone should be synced with a satellite in orbit which reads its position and tells it the correct time based on your timezone. It should not leap around at random. It shouldn't really leap around at all. You draw your unlock pattern and navigate to a stopwatch app, tapping a button to start the watch. You're relieved to see it proceed at a normal pace, the seconds ticking by.

You keep one eye on the stopwatch as you proceed, and after the longest fifteen minutes of your life you find yourself rounding a bend. Ahead the light shifts from a soft grey to a warm gold, but once again vanishes around the next bend and out of sight. You set off at a jog, hoping you can find some sort of spirit to bind before you need to get home for Claire's return. Unfortunately the chances of that happening seem to be shrinking rapidly.

You hadn't really noticed it, but the brook is getting narrower and narrower. It's barely a thin trickle of water over the rocks at this point. As you round the next bend in the brook you find yourself face to face with what you presume to be the source. A massive set of carved stone doors sit embedded in the roots of a great pine tree, a horned head protruding from what would be the keystone at the top of the doorway. Two more carved stones stand on either side of the door as motionless sentinels, have lost in the gnarled roots of the trees surrounding them.

(1/2)
>>
The doors crack open slowly, mist spilling out into the chill morning air. You see a hand reach out from the golden realm beyond, clasping the edge of the stone. Cautiously, you raise your rifle and take aim. You half expect the door to be ripped off its hinges and some forgotten monster to come shambling out. After several seconds of tense stand-off, you begin to doubt that initial expectation.

How about Naked Black Steve Muryn? That's a good middle-ground.

You step forward cautiously, stopping with one foot on the stairs leading up to the door. You clear your throat, but get no response from the figure on the other end of the door. “Hello?” You really hope this thing speaks English. You suppose all the other spirits you've encountered so far have spoken English. Even the self-professed Russian princess. “I don't mean any harm, I'm just exploring the woods.”

The door swings open just a little further, and you lower the rifle so it isn't pointed directly at the doorway. A voice, silken and sweet, filters out from the crack in the doorway. “Do you speak truth, traveler? Many have professed the same intention, but left me sorely disappointed.”

You decide you ought to be careful in this situation, and word your speech carefully. “So far as I'm aware, I've told no lies. I don't mean you any harm if you don't mean me any harm.”

A laugh rings out from behind the door, reminiscent of the musical clinking of wind chimes. You find yourself drawn to the figure behind the door, though you've yet to see her. You wish to surrender yourself to her tender ministrations, to let her use your body as she sees fit. However, the urge passes in an instant. You feel as though some foreign presence has asserted itself in your mind, though it doesn't attempt to influence you.

The door swings open fully, revealing a woman of unmatched beauty. Her features are delicate, white hair cascading past slender shoulders. Two great horns extend from the back of her head, flowers draped from them and tied into her hair. Feathers and beads hang down from their tips, tinkling softly with ever step she takes.

Her dress seems composed primarily of bird feathers, though her modesty is preserved by cloth. A raven perches on one of her long horns, staring down at you with one yellow eye. You get the impression it's suspicious.

As for the woman herself, she steps forward carefully. Each movement screams grace and elegance, despite her apparently primitive clothing. “It is so rare that I have company, especially in these last few years. Would you be kind enough to join me for lunch? You would be the guest of honor, the light of an otherwise dull afternoon!” She seems genuinely excited at the concept, though you cna't profess to share her enthusiasm.

>Agree to join her, you don't want to offend this spirit.
>Nah m8. Politely decline.

Always enjoy chatting up a spirit. Maybe we could quiz her about our teleporting ability over tea and crumpets.

>implying it's ever a good idea to eat food offered by spirits
Magical realming 101; go for the party, don't touch the bait.

Archive here.
Go ahead and vote, I'll start the next thread with your choice.
Not sure when I'll next run LQ. I'd like to make more time for it. However, on Saturday I'll be running Banished Quest.

For now, I slumber. Thanks for playing everybody!

>>37409057
A respectable mid-tier fetish when all's said and done.

Thanks for running Soma! Catch ya next LQ.

As our phone's time was jacked up and we can't check the current time, what time was it when we entered the forest?

I can't stay long, someone else is expecting me.

This'll bring up the time dilation, and sow the seeds of jealousy
>>

I'll second that since it's close enough to what I voted.
>>
>>37409076
Thanks for running. How did the new schedule work on your end?

It was alright. We'll see how I feel in the morning. I really should've ended about an hour and a half ago.

You might consider exchanging one Banished per week for Life, or even one a month.
>>
>>37409035
Well this is ruffling my paranoia something fierce.
>>
>>37409172
Just remember that we can always rely on brute force to deal with spirits if shit goes down.
Gluttony was a cunt, now hes our bitch.
If Forest lady is a cunt, she'll end up our bitch.
>>
>>37409223
Rolls and equipment permitting, yes.
>>
>>37409244
Thats how it is always, but still, its nice to know there's a safety net, even if its a ratty and torn safety net
Besides, as long as she isn't a cunt it won't matter
>>
>>37409223
We hit like a 5% chance with Gluttony
>>
>>37409223
We got really lucky with Gluttony, not the sort of thing to rely on as a backup.
>>
>>37409278
>tries to invade our mind
>takes a tempting form
>invites us for a shady dinner

All things considered there's not much in favor of her survival. But we'll see, that's for certain.
>>
If this sort of thing is in the forest, who know what else is around? We won't lack hunting grounds at least.
>>
>>37409338
> survival
whoops
Replace that with "not being a cunt" but I'm sure what I mean is obvious.
>>
