"Ness?" You'd spend a good five minutes staring at her back: watching her for any sudden movements, any tells of what's wrong with her. The woman has kept inhumanly quite and serene as the two of you have trekked through the woods. She won't acknowledge your attempts at talking and hasn't tried to strike up conversation yourself. That's a bit maddening, especially after a week of what was practically complete solitude. Unfortunately, Sprig doesn't make for a great conversationalist. She's cute, though.

You're not even particularly sure where you're headed or what your next move will be from here. Do you head back to Southern Shores? Try to earn your full Trainers License and complete the Sort? Get Dani and go into hiding? Go into hiding by yourself?

Ness hasn't commented on that. Chances are you won't like her answer more than her first: "Why would you want to go back?"

How could you not want to go back...?

Hey everyone. Welcome to a weekend thread! Break out the coffee and cheap bagels!

Voting periods will be 10 minutes usually, with votes during high-stakes, "react fast!" events taking 5 minutes. I will wait 10 minutes here, initially, so that people can show up.

Write-ins are always welcome and, actually, I try to reward them when possible. Creativity, flexibility, thoughtfulness... All important things to consider when you're in the middle of guiding Grey through this quest.

If you have any questions or concerns at any point in the quest, please feel free to voice them. That said, let's try not to shitstorm in thread. That hasn't been a problem with this quest and that's because you guys, the playerbase, are the shit. Keep up the good work.

Useful shit:

Before setting off, Ness explained that she can't know where, when, or how forces from TITAN may show up. She said that the transportation vehicle that brought you here was driven away. This was supposed to be a long, deep cover mission for Seline and Kal. Wait out the initial storm, question and convert you, and then hold you until you were further needed. She claimed that the closest settlement, a Ranger Station, was about a days walk from your initial location.

She also said that, should TITAN make a move and come after you it would draw notice, and "they wouldn't want that. Not when they're so close."

That was the last thing she said to you and you've had plenty of silence within which to think and worry about it. So close to what? Where does Ness plan on taking you?

Ok why are you guys so keen on questioning and converting me? Honestly i can't be the only one whose had to deal with the freaky mind things up til now. If I'm going to keep getting attacked i need to know why. Otherwise i might do something really stupid because i lack context. Also for fucks sake why didn't you people try to talk to me instead of the whole blowup a building and try to kill me and everything i hold dear schtick? Seems pretty counter intuitive to me. Hell i wanted to wreck all your collective shit after that.

we need to know what is going on. we have no reason to trust Nessie. in fact, we should hold the gun to her and threaten her. why shouldn't we shoot her right now? maybe this is a trap.

"Ness." You call again at her back. Once more, no response. Not a flinch, a shrug, nor any other sign of her having heard you. "Ness...! NESS!"

"Yes, Grey? You seemed distressed. That will only fatigue you faster, and we have much ground to cover."

"Just... Shut up." Your hands find your head, the throbbing pain in your temples making it hard to concentrate on anything beyond anger and irritation. "Shutupshutup... Why did you people do this to me? Capture me? Blow up a gym? For me, a Sortie? What... Because I got some freaky dreams?"

You scoff. "I can't be the only one to have dealt with these things. So stupid to... Augh..." A spasm races through your body; the cool metal of the gun barrel feels good against your bruises, at least... "Fuckin' capture me because of some spooky voices. You COULD have just TALKED to me!"

"You refer to a we. This is TITAN, no?"

"Yes, Ness. TITAN. Whatever."

"I am not a part of TITAN."

"You-you, you worked... You were holding me. What? Who are you with, then?" You're so confused, but that's nothing new.

"I am only present to assist you however I can in your journey towards the end."

"... What end? The end of what?" Anger raises your voice upwards in volume. Your muscles start tensing again. "Enough with the secrets. What do YOU PEOPLE want ME for?"

She stops. You almost run into her it is so abrupt. Then she turns to face you, visage impassive as always. "You will be used to repair and reform the ARC. Further information is unneeded for now. There are others selected and meant for this purpose. All are valuable: valuable to TITAN, included. They were sought or captured as well. You are the Prime candidate. You must be protected until you the time is right."

"My understand of Seline's memories is that TITAN sought to eliminate you should you prove elusive or uncooperative. You are sufficient but not necessary; you are Prime, but not the only candidate."

>cont.
>>
>>37437409

"What the hell are you talking about...?" You slowly bring the gun up towards her, thumb going over what you recently learned is the safety. "What are you? You're part of Veda....? Part of the ARC? You're in Seline...?"

No fear. No confusion. Peace. Perhaps even boredom rests on Ness's face. "I am Seline."

"No, you're not. You're not human. You are different. Changed."

"What is Human, Grey?"

You snap a bit more; the fatigue, the pain... It gets to you. You shove the gun into her chest, knocking her back a few steps.

"STOP TOYING WITH ME! ANSWER ME!"

"Seline was changed, but I AM Seline. I am flesh. I am blood and neurons. Cells. I am human, albeit changed from my original state after interfering with your mind."

>Ask what was in your mind.
That's what I want to know if we can...
>What does she mean, candidate?
And what makes us "prime"...
>>
>>37437425
We should also point out they've given no incentive to help out...just the opposite really...sure they saved us but only because they need us...why should we want the revival of the arc shards or whatever, how can we trust them...
Plus it don't seem to be understanding what we mean by not Seline...it may be currently occupying Seline's body but it's not Seline herself ...or is it...is it all of us...does it even understand what it is...
>>
>>37437425

Various muscles in your face flex and tense; you squint, your mouth contorts into a twisted smile. It's all so nuts...

"Wha....t.... What is... What's in my head, uh, Ness?" You tap the gun barrel against your temple. "What did you put in there? What's hiding, and... Can it change me? Like it did you? Am... am I even me?"

"I sense great psychological stress from your person. This is both time-consuming and overall detrimental to all things currently involved."

"Yeah no shit. Great deductive work, there." You sigh and set into a bit of a controlled fall, coming to a rest against a nearby tree. "How much of Seline is present?"

"What?" Finally, a bit of confusion. Maybe some humanity.

"You have replaced or altered Seline. How much of her mind was left untouched? Is she, er, her mind gone? Dead?"

"Very little of her neural network was altered. Why is this information necessary?" She seems to think for a bit, finger to her lips. She closes her eyes in concentration. You sit and ignore her crazy shit.

"Ah. Yes. I see, now: My behaviors have been too inhuman for you. This is partly because the assimilation has not completed, yet. I shall strive to be more human-like in my behaviors. I understand that you like 'humor.' I shall strive to be more 'funny,' but do not count on it. Hah. Hah."

You groan.

"Most of Seline's consciousness was left unchanged, merely... slightly 'discolored.' She was shown things and made to understand a greater picture. Like adding coloration to a glass of water and then turning a light upon it. It is still water, merely... changed."

You nod a bit.

"... And my mind? You 'colored' it too?"

She shakes her head in the negative.

"That cannot be said. Your mind was always colored. Perhaps there is a joke to be said here about 'a glass being fifty percent full?' Hah. Hah."

Her attempts at humor are shamelessly inhuman, you decide. Funny, but not in the way she intends. More eerily surreal than anything.

>cont.
>>
>>37437833

"Okay... Sure, Ness. Look on the bright side. Right. And my mind being 'colored,' is that why I'm a Prime candidate? What does that mean? Candidate for what? 'Repairing the ARC?'"

That puzzles you the most. You're not even sure what the ARC IS, what it DOES...

"What's the problem with the ARC? What IS the ARC?"

"No, there is no problem with the ARC. The ARC IS the problem. And you are one of the few humans on this world suited for the purpose of solving this problem."

Riddles. Riddles and half-truths. Or maybe full-truths? Maybe it's just the questions are too big. too big for you right now...

You're not sure if you should explore this more or not. Everything's wrapped up around this ARC, but then... what's "everything?" Maybe when she's opened up a bit more and decided to make some more sense... Maybe. You don't know.

"Alright, well... Thanks. For finally explaining something." You pull up your phone, looking through...

"Hey. What the hell." You open up your contacts again and again. "Where's my service? My numbers? My contacts?"

"Removed by TITAN. Phones contain software and hardware that would enabled tracking."

"Fucking DAMN IT!" You slam it shut onto your wrist. You pinch the bridge of your nose as you stand and set to walking. "Alright. Let's go. Keep walking.... I can't... Can't even find out about my team. Ness!"

"Ah. Well perhaps the glass analogy should be employed here as well."

"Shut up, Ness."

Your thoughts drift over a few different topics as you walk. Sprig seems to keep an eye out, for the most part, and everything's relatively uneventful. Quiet. Which surprises you, mostly... There's usually a lot of background chatter throughout the forest. Why...? Why is everything so quiet?

"Ness? Why is everything so quiet?"

"Because there is nothing currently producing much noise."

"Damnit- Yeah, I know. Why..." You sigh. "Why is there currently a lower-than-expected level of ambient noise in the area?"

"A side effect of the ARC being tampered with by TITAN, I have concluded. Though I am unsure if it is due to organism death or distraction."

".... What?"

There's a noise. A rustling; it starts far away but seems to quickly be getting closer...

"What did you mean by that, Ness? Organism death?"

It's growing louder. Something feels off.

"Grey. Get into that nearby tree and prepare to defend yourself." Ness has gone from impassive to hustling, pushing you towards a tree and practically forcing you up it. "You must survive. Hurry. Climb! CLIMB!"

The rustling's practically on you, now.

>53 - 10 (Fatigue, Pain, and Stress) = 43
>43 v. 89
> Things are starting out rough...

It could be forces, something dangerous... Whatever it is, Ness's acting urgent enough for the both of you; and, so, you climb. With Sprig clinging onto your back you climb as fast as you can up the side of a hickory tree. One you get a couple limbs up you turn to offer Ness a hand but she's not going for the tree: she's turned to face the oncoming threat.

Branches and twigs snap; leaf litter crumples and rips under the rush of feet as the form moves through underbrush... There! You can see it!"

"Ness! It's a Mightyena! Coming straight at us...? What the hell!"

"The ARC, Grey. It has lost any semblance of reason. It will try to kill me. It may succeed. Do NOT let it kill you; Survive, Grey. Find a way to survive."

The Mightyena is moving at a terrible pace. With a howl it charges straight for Ness. She dodges, leaping out of the way and letting it collide with a tree. But it quickly recovers, turns, and then uses its vastly superior dexterity to take a long swipe at her. She doesn't cry out or flinch but that wound doesn't look good....

>Ness is injured. She can only take 4 more injuries before death is imminent

We'll "fluff" (haha, cotton. fluff) it as Sprig having superior speed, here. No, I didn't give Pokemon abilities though. Seemed like an unnecessary complication that I didn't think made much sense in many cases.

That said, developing and bonding with a Pokemon can give them bonuses / "abilities."

>78 for Spring vs 63 for Mightyena
>Success; Type advantage, too

"Sprig! Get down there and get'im!" The little Fairy hops down and glides her way over to the Mightyena.

"Cotton Spore! Slow him down"

Sprig pulses, her fluffy mantle expanding before suddenly deflating again. This repeated shaking releases a cloud of seeds and cotton that floats towards the Wolf-like Monster. It's back turned, it fails to notice the cloud drifting onto its body and taking root in its hair, seedlings quickly sprouting at the contact with body heat and creating thousands of dragging blooms. The Mightyena snaps to attention as the roots continue to spread, turning away from Ness's form and growling angrily. Roots roll over skin, forming interconnecting nets that slow and hamper its movement. It turns, breaking some of the root network, and searches for the offender.

Sprig has dashed over on all fours and is on its back at this point. She sinks her claws and teeth into it. It howls out in pain.

"Keep it up, Sprig! Stun Spore!" You shout from on high, voice tense and body even more so. Ness isn't moving much; she's pulled herself up against a sapling and is working on stopping any bleeding. She doesn't seem to be in any severe pain, either, but you're not sure if that's because she's alright or forcing herself to be.

You turn your attention back to the fight. The Mightyena managed to roll around and then fight Sprig off. He got a couple bites in but you can't see any blood or wounds on your Whimsicott. Damn fluff is in the way... The Mightyena goes for another bite but all he gets is a mouthful of Stun Spore.

Sprig lunges onto its muzzle, then, as it tries to escape the choking, disorienting powder. The two set to biting and clawing, the Mightyena's movements even slower and troubled now. You get the feeling it would have a hard time chasing you, but it seems to have stamina left in spades...

"Gotta wear it down, then..." You think through the moves you know Sprig has. A lot of hampering, long-con ones... "Got it. Sprig?!"

She bounces off the Mightyena's back and onto a branch. It jumps, snapping at her, before settling into a low stance. A faint, purple light suffuses its jaw before it leans back and looks upward once more: the force spreads outward, rushing forth and washing over Sprig. Her form is blown back a bit but she seems fine. Little to no damage, and she doesn't seem to be mentally recoiling from the Dark energy.

"Sprig! Leech Seed!" She responds with a chirp before focusing on her cotton once more. It pulses, this time sending out larger, thicker seeds that stick to the Mightyena once more. It begins to yelp and cry out in pain as they dig into its skin, minuscule root-hairs working on harnessing its energy....

Sprig dives down once more to engage. In its fury, The Mightyena turned from the hard-to-reach form and back to Ness. Sprig intercepts it, thankfully, and the melee resumes.

Ness is impassive but the bleeding's looking too bad. You have medical equipment. She needs your attention... Have to get past that Mightyena...

>41 - 10 Fatigue, Pain, Stress = 31 Vs. 84
>Failure.

"Sprig... Ness... Shit!" You shift your weight along the crook of the tree and slide down. You lose a bit of your grip, though, and your descent turns into a fall. You hit the ground fine but your body reels from the impact. Your head and bruises throb; you can't help but cry out in pain.

"Ahfuck...! Damn it!" You go to your knees and focus on your breathing. You look up at a loud, high-pitched squeal: the wolf has Sprig's arm between its jaws. Shit, no... No, no, no. Nobody else can suffer or get hurt. "SPRIG!" You get onto shaky knees, tired feet. "Fairy wind! NOW!"

She manages to get your command through her head, somehow. Her body tenses and her horns glow. Energy radiates out from her body, sparkling through the air. Some kind of particulate... You're not sure on the exact science, but it hurts like hell for a lot of the more energy-sensitive Types. She puffs and gusts from her body, sending the particles spinning over and onto the Mightyena. It howls and screams out, letting go of her arm.

You stare at the blood running down your Whimsicott for a time, then turning to Ness. She's staring back at you, silent but visibly in pain. Fuckin' hell... Why you?

"Breathe. Breathe. Sprig! Fairy wind again!"

The ball of fury holds he injured arm as she creeps over to the raging wolf, still scratching at its eyes and sensitive bits, razor-sharp and Fairy-infused particles lancing pain through its body. She keeps sending wave after wave over it as the leech-seed does its work, tendrils creeping over and into Sprig to heal her. The Wolf begins to still, emptying of protest as the life leaves its body.

You make your way to Ness and begin administering some simple first aid. After stim'ing her she pushes you away, insisting you "try to catch it. Distraction. Tool, if nothing else. Put it out of its misery, at least."

Your understanding is that Leech Seed can finish... Even with a corpse.

You shakily stand up and aim. You take a deep breath as you stare down the gun-metal black barrel; the sights gleam in the dim light. Your eye runs over the scene: sprig standing over the wolf. Its half-lidded eyes and shallow breaths. The tendrils running from wolf to 'Scott... Part of it makes you sick, part of it reassures you that you'll be able to survive thanks to Sprig. You just have to keep her healthy.

You grind teeth against teeth. Can't catch it, it's too dangerous and just a liability as this point. Couldn't even register it with all your electronics fucked... Damn it.

You don't want to do it. Guns are absent in this society for a fuckin' REASON. You'd never even seen one until a week ago. You don'twanttoshoot-don'twantto-kill... It...

You pull the trigger. Gas compresses, an explosion is triggered. Metal flies. A shell is released. The mechanisms of the gun coil, wind, unwind, release... The bullet enters the wolf's skull and it shifts but an inch. It is dead.

You have killed a living thing with but a pull of your finger.

>>37440710
Or make him even more paranoid, remeber he was suppossed to be safe in the city and had men tranq him after a cyborg tried to kill him and some wierd entity stopped him. Then he got beaten, found out something not of him is i his head, almost got mind raped, sees another victim of mindrape and had to kill something. We aren't even close too safety yet. Grey could very well have a mental break or ten well before this is over. Just because it is low lethality doesn't mean a god end is guaranteed. It can still get dark fast.
