You clatter your way through the forest, sounding for all the world like someone has thrown chitin plates down a staircase.
And for some reason, that thought cheers you up, even if just a little.

The trees start to thin as you near the river. You can already smell your friends, the wind carrying their scent.

You have once again resolved a problem.
Which is why you are sporting this classy new adornment- The neck-snake. Individually patterned, sentient, and utterly unique.

In particular, you've acquired a new friend, a Lamia by the name of Esmerelda. Or Ezzy. A forest lamia, she's only a few feet long, nd is currently wrapped around your neck as you travel. It certainly makes it easier to talk.

Overhead, the sun has already reached its apex for the day. Noon is past, and you've got more than a little distance to go. A bit of relaxation is in order. Deserved, even.

Of course, you have to make it home first.

>Get to the river, get that boat in the water. Paddle for all you're worth.
>There's been enough stress today. Let the current take you. You can go all out tomorrow.
>Get some chatter in. (Who? What?)

Well keep in mind she doesn't necessarily have to gain that EXP from combat. The first time Lyra evolved she gained the last required EXP from practicing magic. Perhaps we could get a bit of practice with Sara in before the day is out?

>"Sara, I said practice, yes? That does not mean "try and blow Lyra up," yes?

>>37440995
Which reminds me, with all the powerleveling and Lyra being all kinds of broken, it's kind of easy to overlook just how damn talented Sara is at the whole magic thing herself.
Sure, she lacks Erics' Job levels and her combat and adventuring capabilities are still greatly outclassed by him, but she has kind of already surpassed him in Enchanting skill levels and having her Star Magic at 12 after only two months is all kinds of impressive.
>>

If it were a skill she could have, were she to train in it, it would be unlisted. By having it as Rank 0, it means that she may never improve it, ever.

Just like Esmerelda's self-esteem.
>>
>>37441205
The thing to note is that she's as rank 0 and not N/A, (unlike Dad and his strong silk) which means she has the ability to level it up somehow.
>>
>>37441347

Almost makes up for not inheriting her elf fangs.

Esmerelda has been mostly silent for the trip- After the conversation with her mother, anyway. And the promises that followed.
You have quite a few to keep, now.

She's still standing upright atop your shoulder, a lock of your hair in her hands to keep her stable.
Your hand comes to your throat, finding her tail.

Her scales are smoother than you thought they'd be. The top is cool to touch, while the underside has already started to pick up your own heat. It feels like it's mostly muscle. Solid rather than soft. You run it between your fingers until she lets out something approaching a chirp, yanking on your hair to draw your attention.

"SSssssstop that! What are you doing!?"
"Sorry, yes? I was curious."
"About my tail?!"
"I was curious about what scales would feel like, yes."
"Well, don't."

You dip your head a little.
"Mhmm. Ah."
"What?"
"About Nin, yes?"
"Nin? The... harpy?"

"The moth."
"Which one is the harpy, then?"
"Jin, yes."
"That's confusing."

"One is always alseep, and the other is always annoying."
"I'll certainly be able to tell them apart now."
"Anyway. Nin, yes? She's ridiculous. Don't listen to her."
"Huh?"

"She tells lies. Absurd lies."
Your hands a gesturing expansively. Trying to visualize the size of your resident moth's capacity for lying proves to be beyond the reach of your arms.
"I see."

"Yes, yes. So, don't believe her."
"Mhm."
"We're back."

You break free from the gnarled grasp of nature, pushing an errant branch from your face as you reach the riverbank.

The boat is much as you left it- Sleeping harpy, Reading spider. Moth harassing elf.
You sigh.

"Nin, what are you doing?"
Both turn at the sound of your voice.
Sara turns a page.

"It's just a harmless experiment."
"I am not letting you experiment on me with anything, you-"
"Do you even know the meaning of harmless?"
>>
>>37441447
"Where no harm comes to me!"

Esmerelda snorts, and you manhandle the moth back onto your shell.
"Absolutely not."
"It's fine! I just want to see what the dust does!"
"Then use it on yourself, yes."

Lann nods in agreement.
"But what if it isn't harmless?"
"Nin, I will tie you down until we reach home."

She sighs dramatically as you pack Jin next to her.
"I never get to have any fun."

Lann rolls her eyes right along with you, and you shove the boat free of the sand.
Bloody ridiculous moths.

You pile in, grabbing the oars and focusing on your task.
Which is getting as close to home before sundown as possible.

You easily pass your previous mark of 'now I have to go back and return this snake' when Esmerelda turns, parting your hair like a curtain and leaning out behind you.

"So, Nin?"
"Hmm? Oh! You came along!"
"Yes, I-"
"Perfect, perfect! Soon enough everyone will acknowledge my lady as the one true Queen!"
"What."

"I told you, yes. I warned you about the moth."
You mutter your discontent downstream, arms flexing as you propel the boat towards home.

You growl, leaning forward just a little further.
Really putting your back into it.

The conversation behind you continues, unabated.

"She's too young to be queen, isn't she?"
"Aha! That's the beauty of it! If we start now, then when she is old enough- She'll be ready!"
"Hmmm. But why? What do we get out of a queen?"

You can feel the moth inflating. Chest puffing up, pride radiating from every pore.
You cringe internally.

"A forest free of fear! More food, faster growth! Imagine- a space of your own, heated by the queen herself!"
"She isss warm..."
"And just-"

"Nin."
"My lady! I fall over myself to-"
"I cannot fit the entire forest on my butt, Nin. And I will not be trying, yes."

Lann is choking.

"A bit of magic-"
"No. No, no, no."
"The city is broken, isn't it?"

Nin's attention is immediately swung back to the snake.

"My lady has at her very fingertips- magic the likes of which has never been seen-"
"Earth magic is very common, yes?"
"Pfah! She seeks humbleness in her radiance! The stones of the city rise at her command! Rebuilding itself to marvel at her-"

Ezzy slides back under our hair, pulling herself up next to your face, looking forward. Nin continues on. Lann has gagged herself- While she apparently finds the moth amusing, she is at least smart enough to know not to encourage her.
You appreciate it.

"Can you really rebuild the city?"
"Technically yes? I fixed one building, so we could get into the ruins. And I can build things and call stone."
"Are you going to fix it, then?"
"Not now, yes? Noone lives there. If I simply raised buildings... It would fill with monsters inside the week, most likely."
>>
>>37442589
The lamia lets herself fall into her thoughts, then lies across your shoulder- her arms flopping over the side as she balances herself atop it.
You aren't sure if she's simply allowed herself to fall asleep, but with her tail wrapped around your neck she won't be falling anytime soon.

Nin, thankfully, dozes off in the minutes that follow, the sun dipping ever lower in the sky above. You keep at it, arms burning, until the rays are dancing over the water, nearly gone.

You don't even bother getting out of the boat- the earth lifts you clear of the river, moving you up into the trees, bracing you there.
Your eyes close, and you lean back, even as your friends close in around you for warmth.

You extricate yourself from the group, though you stop short of attempting to pry the snake from your neck.
She curled in on herself in her sleep, holding her tail tight to form a neat little loop.
Ha.

You snag a wolf shaped package, and start to clamber down the stones- Sheszka is at least as early a riser as you are, and you're greeted by a pair of alert eyes when you start to peel away layers of blankets.

It brings a smile to your face.

"Good morning, little wolf."
"Alpha."
"Lyra, yes?"
"Mmm."

You muss her hair and shake your head.

"We need to get you back on your feet, yes?"
This, at least, is something she full agrees with, nodding ferociously.
You do away with the rest of her blankets, and she stands next to you- with a bit of support. One hand holds your leg while her own tremble.

"Don't worry, yes. We will have you up and running in no time!"

She smiles up at you, and you lead her into the woods.

To start- You ease her into it. Letting her move on all fours helps, and she's got a decent pace again soon enough.
Nothing approaching her absurd bursts of speed, but it'll be back soon enough.

You send her after rabbits, rodents. Anything to small to put up a fight.
You want her moving, not injured.

You let her rest a bit, between catches. Call her off whenever she starts to lag. One step at a time, yes.
You round out the morning by letting her track for you, bounding ahead till she finds a small herd of deer- She spooks them straight to you, and you simply grab a few as they try to run by.

Breakfast is served.

The trip back to camp is quick, even with your partner's slowed pace.
You manage quite feat- Lowering your false tree without even waking anyone inside.
>>
>>37444034
Of course, they don't quite manage to sleep through the scents of tender meat, grilling fireside.
You have to tuck a little bib beneath your snake-necklace when she starts to drool.

Sleepy eyes and messy hair greet you around the campfire- People immediately start to line up for their food, while Nin staggers from the boat, wearing a blanket like a cape.
She clambers up onto your shell, slumping into a socket and chewing on leaves.

You still don't know where she finds them.

A few savory steaks later (and an entire raw deer, but no-on needs to know that), breakfast is finished. It's time to get this boat on the road. River. Waterway. It doesn't matter.

The current catches the boat almost immediately, tugging it along into the centre of the river.
It's not really all that fast, but...

You look at the oars.

You don't really want to, right?
You deserve a break, don't you. All this rushing and rowing and hunting and magic, it tires a girl out.
It wouldn't take long. A little nap, right?
You could just close your eyes, just a little...

You squeeze your six eyes shut, cursing.
You're so close, so close.

You crack your neck- To the protest of your current adornment- and sigh. You're going to just flatten yourself when you get home. Spread out and sleep. Maybe you could make a minipool, crank up the heat and just lie there. Lie in your hot tub until your chitin got wrinkles.
A spider slug.
You will be a giant spider slug.

"What is a 'giant spider slug'?"
Oh. That was out loud, then.

"Ezzy."
"Mmm?"
"I am very, very tired, yes."
"And the slug thing?"
"When I get home, I am going to lay around and do nothing at all."

She's moving, but you can't really see her.
"Why are you so tired?"
"The last week and a bit- Sheszka was sick, so we helped build the boat, then carried it to the top of the waterfall, then rowed and dragged it to the lake, carried it into the trees while fighting giant monsters. Then the wendigo healed her, and everything was fine and safe but I have not been home and I want to just sleep and not move."

"And you'll get to do that when you get home?"
"Probably not."
She snickers.

"Lyra?"
"Mhmm."
"Really, though? Do you know how to get bigger?"
"The growing thing, yes?"

"Yes."
"I don't know. Fighting monsters? Pushing yourself? I hunt a lot. And I... probably pick too many fights with giant monsters. But do not tell my mother that, yes?"
"Maybe."
>>
>>37445207

"Have I told you about our home?"
"Your home?"
"Yes, yes. We are arachne. Except for my father, he is an elf. But our nest is high in a tree, many, many times bigger than-"

She's already shivering.
"It is not that bad."
"Hmph."

You can see rocks ahead. You're closing in on the rapids, finally. There's a dull roar somewhere ahead- The waterfall, welcoming you home.

I bet Ezzy would level up from this.

Basically, if it looks dicey, just sort of earth our way out of the river.

Laziness over caution!

We are a giant spider yes?

Perhaps we can swing the boat down the falls. With spider silk.

Kinda like a Gondola

Funny as it is, I have to change to this one, because not everyone on board is a heavily armored giant spider and would overcome such a crash with ease.

Guys.. that was a joke. We are not going to desecrate a magical place dedicated to elements important to our sister to make a waterslide.
We are not That Giant Spider.

and that's the story of how we broke the boat less that a week after getting it.

Crazy plans to waterslide down the mystical star falls aside-

Snake evolution betting begins now.
Put aside the tier 2 generic stuff.
What do you think tiny snek turns into when she hits the big leagues.

And how long until lyra receives a 'long suffering babysitter' evolution
>>
>>37446235
She basically has seats on her butt.
She already got that evolution.

Of course, a tiny snake that wishes to be big, will get a Jormungand as final evolution.
>>
How long until lyra becomes a literal house spider?
>>
>>37446263
Prerequisite achievement: Is my tail delicious?
>>
>>37446267
Too late, we're already there.

Though we might take up carrying a palenquin or something.

stone toboggan ?
>>
>>37446235
Really wondering how she'll get the constrictor evolution, as that's where her size will really change, with the possibility of jormungandr or even forest wyrm as eventual evolutions.
>>
>>37446714
Maybe a whole lot of burrowing?
Or for constrictor, just choking her food instead of using venom?
>>
>>37446714

well, Jin has a thing for fire Not Obsessed and she got fire resistance...
so Ezzy might get additional size growth due to her obsession with becoming bigger...
though that will probably adversely affect her stealth skill...

What I am curious about is if she will get some form of magic, and if so, what kind...
Fire as a minor is a given due to Lyra's affinity and Jin's not obsessed thing...
>>
You heave another sigh as you watch the stones and swift moving water approaching. Maybe you could just stay in the boat. Move rocks out of the way. Waterslide. Waterslide right off the falls, maybe even make a spiral out of it, dumping you right back into the river and-

You can feel a slap along the back of your shell.
"Lyra. Don't you dare!"

Out loud again.

You really need to rest.

You paddle over to the side, and begin the arduous process of unpacking everything so you can carry it.
"The slide would have been easier..."
"Lyra-"
"Yes, yes."

You sulk a little as you stuff bags behind you. Sheszka and Lann will have to walk. Everyone else, too.
Not your resident tiny snake, but nobody else can fit behind you while you're hauling the boat.
That'll teach them all.

Everyone stretches as they move, shaking feeling back into their various bits after the numbness of hard seats and hours of travel.

It's nothing like walking in giant monster forest circle, at least. Trees are reasonably sized, sunshine exists. The endless sounds of moving water accompany the slow chatter of people with nothing to do.

It's relaxing. The breeze is nice, too.

"-So your dad wasn't around when you were younger?"
"He went off to explore something, yes. He thought we wouldn't be so quick to hatch, or so quick to grow up."
"Ouch."
"Mmm."
"And you taught yourself magic without him, though? That's damn impressive."

"What was it like?"
"Hn?"
"When you were sick? When I used the healing powder. I want to know, please."
"Being sick was like... being hot. Too hot, yes? And shivery, and weak. And the powder was cool, and calm. I could sleep."
"Hmm. I see-"
"Thank you, yes. Very much."

You don't need to look to know Nin is blushing.
>>
>>37446870
Jin swoops in from above, her broad wings blanking out the sun for a moment before she lands on your shoulders, leaning over yor head to look at you upside down.
Ezzy narrowly manages to get out of the way.

"Watch out! You almost stepped on me!"
Jin eyes the little snake with an almost fiery jealousy. You poke her in the forehead.

"Yes?"
"Lyra."
"Mhm?"
"I flew up high, yes? I think your sisters are in the river."
"You flew all the way to the river?"

She shakes her head, which really only serves to flop her hair all over your face.
"I can see very far, yes."
"Mmm. Thank you, Jin. Good job."

She smiles, and her eyes instinctively slide closed as your hand reaches towards her head. Your new jewellery watches in awe as you reduce a harpy to a large winged pile of jelly, leaving Jin all but lying across your head.
You really can't see shit like this.

But that's okay.

Your sisters are ahead. You're almost home. Just a little further to go.
>>
>>37446899
Oh, I wish to visit with the sisters.

Also, HOW short is jin/how long are our arms?
Because that is an impressive reach for headrubs.
>>
>>37446899
>But that's okay.
>Your sisters are ahead. You're almost home. Just a little further to go.
then we walk straight into a tree
>>
>>37446714
I've said it before and I'll say it again.
Force her into cockfights or stick her into cagematches with gnomes.

The only way to make sure she'll get a size boost is to have her fight physically and that means finding stuff her own size to fight against.

>>37446899
Time for SPIDERSHARK!!!
>>
>>37446823
I'm sure she will eventually get an elemental affinity, but I suspect that it won't be until her second evolution. And even then, there's only a slight chance that it would be fire. The only one of Lyra's family to share her affinity for fire is Sheszka, and that's only because we're her alpha.
>>
>>37446899
