Consciousness is a fickle thing, in a way amusing in and out of itself. You realize this as your senses slowly start sending information to your processing clusters, around you is the nothingness of space, but these are not the sense of your own body. No this is the information from an extension of yourself, you are inside a pod drifting, space is vast and full of countless stars and worlds abound. You know who you are, you are queen, supreme intelligence, you are mother or rather will be mother to all.

A thought enters your mind with ample excitement, “SISTER, I have found new homes!” Its a thinker, a specialized near-autistic brain-like brood. This one is a sibling to you, hatched to protect and guide your pod, no doubt given very specific instructions. You cannot directly counter these, but while know all of this, you do not from whence you have come nor where you are going, or how many of your species there are. Ideas and memories are floating about in your mind, not yours, but nonetheless part of you.

For the moment you push them aside, its time to see what the thinker has found, your pod no longer has fuel for another star to star jump, or an FTL capability. This star system has many planets, but only a handful can provide you with survivable conditions. This is fine, your thinker, your brother has done well, you commend him. “I HAVE DONE THING!” It responds. You find the data from your pod's sensors to be acceptable. Three planets are in your sight:
>>
>>37472628

The first is a class II, a frozen tundra, unforgiving and certainly not devoid of life. In your memory you can see these planets to be harsh, but not without their merits, they do provide ample supply of specimens, but thriving would not be easy.

The second a class III, if the last one was not cold enough, this one is pure ice, arctic in nature and highly unlikely to contain high lifeforms, not a place to be taken lightly. But the isolated nature does provide protection in some of your more advanced stages.

Last one is a class I, but mostly Ocean, 98% Ocean, the abundance of life here would astound. By memory, most lifeforms here can be gargantuan. Threading with much care is a must for a place like this. Nonetheless if will be fairly abundant in its supply of nutrients, your hive could thrive, if only metals where equally abundant, you don't doubt the sea-floor could provide for the hive.

However at the edge of your vision are multiple class V asteroids, but without a nutrient base, you'd starve to death.

Your mind directs the pod towards the Frozen tundra, its a suitable place to start, not so cold enough that it would freeze most of your brood, but not so hot that it would equally burn them to a crisp. Your thinker plots the course and the pod swiftly moves towards its destination. Upon reaching the outer layer of the atmosphere you find it that perhaps this is more than just a suitable world but a thriving one, there is an abundance of plant life, and thus animal life must surely follow. But for the moment you must land.

With great difficulty you manage to steer the pod into a relatively safe landing, coming up a bit fast you crashed into a heavily forested, area, the place is saturated with huge trees, no less than 200 meters high. You cannot make out any sounds, the pod is deaf by default, no need for such sensors out in space. There is some minor damage to the pod, but its mostly superficial, your companion, is a bit dazed but quite alive. What does the queen do?

Caves win.

You have decided that if any place is suitable to start a hive it is inside a cave, but you have no workers to assist you, so your first task as queen must be to find your own accommodations, this is hard. However, you did not expect things to be easy, and perhaps this is how your kind tests the mettle of their future queens. If so you shudder to think of how you will test your future daughters. For the moment this is of no concern, you must find shelter. And you know it will be not be without peril.

Upon first leaving the pod you can feel the world explode into a cacophony of sounds, its beautiful if overwhelming. Clearly there are many, many creatures on this planet, there is a constant chittering and chirping all around. There must be dozens of avians and who knows how may insectoids, albeit by comparison so small. But you cannot let the sights and sounds distract you from what is to be your most important test. You try to extend your magnificent wings but you cannot, the steep temperature seems to have frozen the mucous that normally covers them, without your wings you must walk and hope to find a cave soon.

You are unsure of your likelihood of success but nevertheless this is the path you are committed to. For hours you wonder the forest, and you can swear that something is following you, but your eyes are not meant for detecting prey or hunting down enemies. And your antennae pick up various disturbances in the ionosphere, some electrical activity to the west but no large animals nearby. Its disturbing, and yet you must continue. This drags on for hours, your energy nearly depleted but all of it pays as you near the edge of a ravine.

Out in the distance, no more than 400 meters away if a good 200 meters below there is a cavern, you can see it quite clearly. Making your way there will not be easy, but climbing down should not be that hard, drones do it all the time. Upon your attempt the rocks at the edge give way and you fall, there is some struggle as you attempt to unfold your wings, but this is to no avail. Three legs break upon impact with the hard soil beneath. Pain shoots through your mind, your thinker cries in protests, but you quicly assure him that you are fine. A lie.

It takes a grueling herculean effort to grad yourself over to the cave, and even more of an effort to make it inside. The place is damp and cold, without proper heat you fear the worst.

With much pain you continue deeper in to the cave, you fear that your legs are ruined, three broken and the others covered in cracked chitin and cuts. For a queen to not have taken her maiden flight, such a disgrace, oh if your ancestors could see you, weep, weep they would. With great effort you unfold and expand your egg-sack now that you have reached a sufficient depth into the cave. Your first brood will be weak and small, but they will hatch in a few hours instead of a day. You lay a total of 5 workers, you wish you had the energy and nutrients for more but this ordeal has left so with only a fourth of your normal strength.

Its so cold now, you wrings are cracked and pieces have fallen off two of your eggs, your precious eggs have become frozen, their tiny embryos all dead now. You cuddle the other three and hold onto them for dear life. Your body provides a modicum of warmth. You desperately hope its enough, you cannot lay any more eggs, not in your state, you could try and eat the other two that froze but that would at most support you for a day or give you enough energy to lay one more egg. A hard choice indeed, not that life has given you much in the way of choices, this accursed world has been a harsh host, and you can only but dream of setting foot upon a world lush with fungi, and bathe upon a warm star. But such is not your fortune.

Outside you hear the shuffling of rocks, perhaps near the entrance of the cave, that would be a good 150 meters away, but you are too weak to investigate. The time passes and you hear the same shuffling of pebbles, this time closer. If it is a predator you wonder how small it must be to make so little sound, your antennae are bruised and barely functioning, you cannot read the atmospheric pressure or local energy of animals. A sense of dread envelops your mind but at the same time a rustling near your drives your attention to the eggs.

They have hatched. “We live for mother!” So beautiful, your first batch. If only oh so small, both in quantity and in actual size. You settle for eating the two of your brood that could not hatch.

The energy of the two that did not hatch will serve you well until tomorrow, for now you must investigate the sounds at the entrance. Your little workers, all three of them march onwards in search of that which bothers their mother. “We will find!” With great care they sneak ever closer to the source of the sounds, with their antennae, they manage to find the creature with ease. Its a large quadropod, you suspect this creature followed you from the forest. Your workers may be small and weak, but they have the element of surprise.

You tell them to attack and kill the creature, “We please mother!” With that they leap into the air and land on the beast. Stabbing at it from multiple angles, the animal jumps and roars in protests but this is to no avail, within seconds it is bleeding all over the cave's floor. Your workers are happy and unharmed, this went better than you thought. Still the temperature is rapidly dropping, your thinker is reporting that the pod's life support will soon fail, at the current temperatures he may not survive the night.

You send all your little ones to recover your pod and thinker. “We BRING cousin here!!” such enthusiasm on their part. It takes them many hours and more perils than you care to count but your drones reach the pod. Lifting it proves hard for such a small band, bringing it to the cave takes your little ones almost twice as long as it took them to find the pod. Its now dark out, and you fear that the temperature will only drop lower and lower. You are large and should be able to survive if only weakened. But your drones may not live past the night, well the majority, one of them does have a hastily put together sweater made out of the fur that was graciously provided by the trespasser to what is now the entrance to your hive.

I hunted down a question in the original thread's ask.fm

"When laying a new queen you can do the same thing, but the egg will instead start as a larvae, then enter a cocoon. The queen will become fully aware within the cocoon, and will not leave it until she has been able to sense the condition of her surroundings, which then cause a last minuet series of genetic alterations to adapt the queen to the site of her new hive. For example, on a radioactive world a queen may be born with a much more sturdier and reflective carapace, while on a world with high gravity she may exit the cocoon far more bulky then normal, or without wings at all."

It doesn't matter much anymore, since this is quite a few posts in. So don't let me bother you, you don't need to stick to the canon of the first thread.

This has been going great, by the way. Great for filling the giant bug sized hole in my heart. Was the queen hurt in the pod or was she injured walking all the way to the cave?

Your workers begin dismantling the pod and quickly construct a sturdy shelter inside the cave, it is by no means a fortress but it will surely protect these young drones and yourself from the harsh environment. Your thinker is quite happy that you were able to retrieve him as he wishes to serve. Your current state is of worry for him, but you quickly assure him that this will not be an issue in a few days when you have healed. At least now the insulation of the shelter is staving off the cold which would have made you burn more nutrients to stay warm.

It is time to start planning for the future, your current workers will not suffice in the the long run, and they are not strong enough to survive in this cold place. But your next generation will be capable of more.

You have given it much though and the normal workers will not fare well here, your own adaptability has already saved you in this desolate world. Thus you spend the better part of an hour designing a new type of drone, one that is better suited to the cold environment. With some extra layers of fatty tissue and chitin they should fare better, but just to make sure you add an organ to produce extra heat, endothermic workers, brilliant. But not yet enough, to protect the precious and fragile eyes a semi-permanent eyelid is added. It will act as a set of goggles, and in need retract to self lubricate with a lipid layer.

These new workers will be splendid, if costly. You can only imagine the horrors that you would have faced if your first-borns had not sneaked up on the quadropod and gotten you the much needed nutrients to lay a clutch of 10 eggs. Surely you would have died alone in the cold, but at the moment you dispel such thoughts from your mind. Right now you watch over the little morsels that will tomorrow be your workers.

It is indeed a beta, but better then nothing while waiting for Quest Drone

This is so wrong and dirty. Did you at lewst talk to the original QM and ask for permission before stealing his name? God, this is disgusting.

I kinda agree with this anon. Its one thing to rip off someone's setting after asking. But using his name+beta and using the same damn OP picture just... I don't know. Its just distasteful.

Well, it's not like OP tried to impersonate QD or anything. I do not see it as morally wrong. We've got a little session playing as hive queen while the main good quest is on pause.

For now the problem is very little creativity and original content, maybe it will improve.

Ethics, man, ethics. What he did is still incredibly distasteful and cheap, regardless of impersonating QD or not.

If HQQ was dead or on a permanent hiatus, then it would be something else, a redux, which are acceptable. But so far, it comes across as filling a space not yet empty, blatant ripoff and riding someone's else high.

If QD had given a go ahead, it wouldn't be so bad.

Eh, he used nearly the same name and the same OP pic. I'd be willing to bet money at least half the people who came in thought it was actually QD.

Don't get me wrong, its sweet anon is running this. Its always better to have more civ quests. But its not really cool to take the same name and OP pic and the setting too.
