This quest will be a departure from Harem Protag Quest, though my general writing style will likely stay the same. There will be no god modding (PP), there is not currently a Fate point or Re-roll system though that is subject to change. The world is realistic for the most part, people will likely die, possibly even friendlies depending on the choices and situations, though I won’t be dropping characters left and right or on purpose with no chance to save them. Finally, the MC will have issues stemming from his situation and past. He will not be perfect or even mostly perfect. Things around you will also sometimes be shitty and there may or may not be something you can do about it.

This first thread will be particularly intense; at least that is the plan. There will be blood.
Keeping that in mind, I welcome players new and old to the thread and hope we can make a good quest together. Details in quest are also subject to change if I screw up completely.

Mercenary Quest 2030:
Prologue: 2026

You wake up the same way you have for the past three weeks, with a loud yell and a boot to your side. Whimpering from the pain, you stand up as your attacker continues on his way, waking up most of the children around you with the same yell and the occasional boot to those to slow for his liking. Sitting upright, you rub your side and follow after the mass of children, all boys. You see the girls sometimes, but they’re largely kept away from you. You’re twelve and half, you’ve talked with a few boys when you could but you haven’t seen one older than fourteen in the room with you, the youngest is six.
>>

It’s been five weeks since the power stopped working everywhere if you remember correctly. Your parents had whispered something about “Coronal Mass Ejection” when they thought you weren’t listening, but that doesn’t mean anything to you.

Thinking of that reminds you what happened to your parents. It was four weeks ago, at the same time as the bright light in the sky. You were driving to your grandparent’s house; mom and dad said something about them being more self-sufficient. You’d just taken it as another trip until the light happened. When the light happened, the car stopped working. Dad yelled, Mom screamed. There was a screech and then a crash. When you woke up, both of them were dead and the strange men were pulling you out of the car.

Dead…they’re dead and not coming back. Even as you’re herded with the rest of the kids to a new room you…

As for everyone concerned about not liking the quest, I'd ask for about 5~ threads to see if you like it, as it will take a little to settle in. But if it's not your quest, it's not your quest. Please don't stay only for my sake. However, I'll still be taking suggestions for the first few, so you might be able to suggest something for me.

Anyway, writing.

You feel yourself tearing up like you have been for the past couple of weeks. You stopped sobbing after the first one; it didn’t really help anything and it only made it hard for you to answer when the mean men came in for you.

As the tears fall down your cheeks you still notice something. You aren’t going to the breakfast hall. Normally you take a left and are fed a small meal of porridge or something for breakfast, then you usually sit or are yelled at and told about “The Rapture” by a scary man. This time you’re going to the right, you’ve never been to the right before.

Following the other boys you are herded into a single file line, with men dressed in green camouflage yelling at you to take one and only one.

One of what?

Quickly you see, being towards the front of the line. Knives, they’re handing out knives to all the boys. Stepping up to the man passing them out, you take yours, head down so they don’t yell at you. It comes with a little belt and a thing to put it in. Touching the tip carefully, you can tell it is really really sharp.

Still you’re herded onwards, towards another table with even more stuff on it. That stuff turns out to be guns…and grenades; you recognize them from the movies and T.V.

The men are still yelling at all the boys to take one and only one.

Which do you grab?

>Gun

Even if the grenade is easier to use for a kid or more effective the guns better for personal survival. Plus we're a kid and probably associate more with a gun from tv than a grenade.
>>
>>37496055
Unless this is some WWII Russian level shit where they don't have ammo. Or worse some are fake.
>>
>>37496076
also when you first throw a grenade you don't realize quite how to aim it. A gun is less dangerous to use without experience.
>>
>>37496076
I was thinking the same thing.

"The man with the ammo follows the man with the rifle. When the man in front dies pick up his rifle and shoot!"

I imagine quality anything is going to be hard to come buy shortly. Bullets are easier to make than explosives.

Grabbing the gun you examine it as you are pushed towards a door outside. It looks just like the ones you see the good guys carrying on T.V. though they didn’t give you any more bullets than the one inside of it, at least you don’t think so. As your group of boys is herded towards a group of trucks, you see the bad man who seems to be in charge.

Normally he’s all angry and yelling about the rapture and god’s deliverance, but today he is smiling at you. Once all the boys are gathered in front of him, along with a bunch of the other mean adults, he starts speaking.

“Children of the Rapture!” he says, raising his hands almost benevolently over your assembled group, “Welcome to the first day of the end of time! Today is the day that we will start to bring the lords gift to the rest of the world! You will be the vanguard of their salvation! We shall bring the final purification of this sinful earth to those around us, granting them final peace and a trip to purgatory so that their sins may be cleansed in the fire of our lord! Now go forth, listen to my messengers and do as they say, so that one day too you will join us for our final reward!”

As the man finishes his speech, which you really didn’t understand, the other men cheer, a few of them holding up guns and shooting them in the air. A few of the boys cheer as well, but most of them just look like you, confused, scared and unsure as to what exactly is going on.

You are made to climb into the trucks by the scary men with guns, the tailgate being shut behind you as the truck starts. You drive for a long time, you don’t know how long. Eventually the truck stops and you are made to get out. From there, you walk a long way, before stopping when another group of scary men appear from the trees. The two grownups in charge appear to talk, before the one with your group comes back and starts talking to your group.
>>
>>37496249
Very..very bad. Think throwing a small cannon ball. if you throw like a baseball it will travel maybe 12 feet and your still in the blast radius. Grenades are pretty dense.

“Soldiers of the lord!” he yells at you, “Over this ridge is an outpost of our enemy. You will assault the position from the front while the others flank them! Do not stop, do not falter in the name of the lord! Now line up!”

You and the rest of the boys are made to get in a rough line, and then marched to the edge of a clearing. You see a big building in the distance, with men in front of it. You can’t tell if they have guns or not.

“Soldiers, advance!” yells the man, firing a pistol into the air. A few of the boys start forward, the rest of you still pretty scared. “Forward!” yells the man, this time firing his pistol near your feet. That makes you move forward quickly. As you do so, the men behind you occasionally shoot, making the group run faster.

You can’t see very well thanks to all the boys, but you think the men in front of the building are surprised to see you. They don’t seem to be doing anything, at least until the man behind you yells again.

“Fire!” he yells, “Fire in the name of the lord, kill the unbelievers!” Nobody does so, at least at first. Then somewhere off to the side, you hear a gun chatter, one of the boys following the order. That breaks the silence in front, the men by the building raising guns at you and shooting!

A grenade is more like throwing a Shotput, they're heavy as balls, especially depending on the type. A pineapple can weigh around 1.5lbs, and they can get much heavier than that.

You keep running, even as there are flashes of light towards you and loud noises from the guns. You see, but try not to see some of the other boys around you drop down, their screaming coming from behind you as you and some of the others keep running, a few of them stopping to aim at the men in front of the building with their guns.

One of the boys in front of you stops to throw a grenade. Even though he looks older than you he struggles with the pin. Just as you pass him, you see that he managed to get it off. You keep running, expecting him to throw it past you and towards the men that are getting closer and closer. You don’t see the grenade go past you, but you hear an explosion. You don’t look back, aren’t given the chance to look back as you somehow trip and end up rolling into a big hole that the men appeared to be digging in.

On the other side of the hole is a man. He doesn’t look that old, but then again you’re terrified out of your mind and barely thinking coherently. The man looks surprised as you tumble into the hole, his eyes going wide. You stare at him as well. Suddenly, he moves to grab a gun on the bottom of the hole. He’s going to shoot you!

Guys, I will ask you to take a deep breath and calm down.

This is the prologue, before the quest proper. Scenes are a bit scripted at the moment, you will not die.

This is building the backstory for your character, how he develops for the actual quest.

This has been your threadly QM announcement.

He's using the anatomy term breastplate.
>>

The Sternum, also referred to as "The Breastplate Bone" or "The Breastplate."

I was not implying armor, I was talking about the bone and connective tissues between his soft inner organs that you are attempting to tickle with a sharp piece of metal. It takes a massive amount of force to get through that. So much so, it's better to go under the floating rib, which is hard to know as an untrained child, who is prolly just gonna try to stab someone in the stomach/chest.

Your first thought as the guy goes for his gun is that you really really don’t want to die. You’re scared and mom and dad are dead, but you don’t know about grandma and grandpa and there’s so much you wanted to do, you don’t want to die!

Then you remember that you have a gun too! Somehow you landed with it in your hands, so you hastily point it at the man and then pull the trigger, even as he’s starting to point his at you.

The gun is louder than you expected, not the soft pops from T.V. or even the slightly diluted sounds that had been coming at you. The sound shocks you, causing you to close your eyes as it makes three insanely loud noises and then the gun drops out of your hand. You leave your eyes closed, expecting the man to try and shoot you now that you don’t have a gun.

But it doesn’t come; you don’t feel any pain as the man tries to kill you with all the bullets in the world, though you hear yelling and screaming around you as even more guns go off. Slowly you open your eyes to see what happened. What you see causes you to close your eyes, your stomach roiling.

The man was dead. There was a big hole in his head and behind him was lots of blood. You feel like throwing up.

You throw up. You somehow manage to lean over so you don’t throw up on yourself, but you throw-up everything in your stomach and then some. You’re throwing up for more than just the man, but for every minute of fear, pain and sadness that you’ve had in such a short amount of time.

You don’t know how long you take, but eventually you notice that the sounds of shooting have mostly stopped, but you can still hear lots of screams and moans. Looking down at the ground, you see your gun, which you lean down and pick up while you try not to look at the dead man, the one you killed. You shudder.

Peeking over the edge of the hole, you see lots of bodies lying around, some dead, some alive, both kids and the men that were here at first. You also see the strangely dressed men who were “Flanking”. One of them turns, his gun pointing towards you before he realizes that you’re on “his” side.

“Hey boss,” he says to the man your leader talked to before, “Looks like we’ve got a live one hear.”

The boss looks over at you, your head peaking fearfully out of the hole.

“Well don’t just leave him there,” he says finally, “Get him out of the damn hole and back to the trucks, we can’t waste any of the little shits if they’re still alive.”

“Roger boss,” says the man, before leaning down and pulling you out of the hole, “Come on you,” he says in a tone only slightly lighter than his boss, “We’ll see how many more times you get through something like that before you get to visit god.”
>>
>>37497368
You don’t answer the man, don’t feel like answering him a sense of shock seems to descend over you. You make it back to the trucks somehow, a small handful of other boys also still alive. A few of them are sporting bullet wounds, crying. A couple are on the floor, barely tended wounds still bleeding red blood.

You never forgot that sight, never forgot how red that blood seemed to you.

It’s been…years, since that day. You aren’t sure how many, but you know it’s been years, it’s been snow season three or four times since then. You’ve lost count, you don’t care enough to remember anyway. The years have been hard on you, mostly because of lack of food, you almost starved to death a few times. But you’ve survived, along with many of the original grown-ups. None of the other kids survived, at least you don’t think so. Maybe a few of the girls, but you still don’t get to see them, never knew in the first place.

How did you survive?

You made yourself useful. Early on you figured out it wasn’t enough to just be a killer. Almost anyone could point a gun or throw a grenade at whoever you happened to be fighting that day or week. That just meant there was more of a chance to get shot or stabbed or exploded in turn.

So you made yourself useful in any way you could. It started small, carrying things, doing your best to help the older soldiers with their guns. Slowly you got trusted with more and more. First maintenance, mostly small things like boards or windows. You made your way from there, up to the trucks, at least while you still had parts or could scrounge them. Eventually they even let you do maintenance on the guns. You didn’t have very many after the first year or two, so that was a big honor, it also kept you in food.

You still had to go out of course, almost everyone did. But they kept you out of the line, off the charges. Instead they gave you other things to do, mostly with the adults. They let you carry grenades and such, even taught you how to set up an explosive charge the few times it was needed. You learned a lot, even if you didn’t get to shoot as much.

Today you’re in the Leaders room, fixing a leak in the roof. The leader was one of the people who never went out from the compound, though he usually sent you off with more of his speeches about the rapture and bringing peace to people. It was funny how peace often arrived at the end of a gun or an explosion.

Just as you’re about to finish, you hear the alarm bell going off. Dropping your tools, you dash to the upper story window and peak out, towards the front of the compound. You don’t get a chance to see very much, just some men in uniforms firing at the ones defending the compound. You don’t get a better look because shortly afterwards the window shatters, bullets flying past, missing you by inches. Glass cuts your cheek as you fall to the floor, the leader scrambling around on the ground a look of fear on his face.

“You!” he says as he points at you, terror in his voice, “The agents of hell have come to stop my holy work, you must protect me! I must live to continue to spread the word of the lord!”

A thought hits you at that moment, the Leader nearly groveling on the ground. Why does he need to live so badly? Isn’t he the one constantly sending you off with exultations to kill in god’s name? Doesn’t he want to meet salvation?

You feel the weight of your pistol on your hip. As one of the trusted people, you got to carry a gun, even a small one. It was supposed to be used in self-defense, but all it would take was a snap and it could come free and…

Outside you hear the firing getting louder and louder, the alarm bell having stopped a minute ago. You hear an explosion come from the front door, the building shakes. Whatever you’re going to do, you better do it fast.

You feel the snap of your old holster as your hand slides upward, the sound of metal across leather as you pull the gun out.

“Yes, yes, you must protect me…” says the Leader, at least until you point the gun at him.

“Wha…what, no, no you can’t!” he says, suddenly crawling backwards, away from you in fear, “I treated you right, I kept you alive! You must protect me! I have to spread god’s word to the people!”

“Maybe…maybe you should talk to him about it yourself,” you say, turning off the safety, “You’ll see him soon.”

To be fair to you, you didn’t make him suffer. You did however empty all seven rounds into his chest at close range, obliterating the spot that used to hold his heart. As the Leader lies on the ground, blood pooling from the messy hole in his chest, you once again realize how red blood is.

As you lower your weapon, you hear something outside the door to the Leaders room.

“Pastor John Francis, this is the United States Military! You are ordered to lay down any weapons and place yourself on the floor, hands behind your head, pending arrest and trial for crimes against humanity! You have ten seconds to comply! If you do not comply you will be shot!”

The United States Military? The Leader said they were all dead, killed by god’s holy fire. You weren’t sure you believed him, but you aren’t sure you believe these folks either. Still, you need to make a decision.

From the sounds you heard outside, these people, whoever they actually are, have a lot of guns and plenty of ammunition to go with them. Besides that, you only have seven more rounds and you figure they won’t go down as easily as the leader did.

So you do as they ask, dropping your gun on the floor and kicking it away before you drop to the ground, hands over your head like you vaguely remember seeing on T.V. back when you were little. It doesn’t take long after that for the door to burst open, actually at eight seconds, not ten. Men in combat gear swarm through the door, assault rifles held straight and pointing to many different directions, one of them focusing on you.

“We’ve got a live one here!” yells that one, even as another yells, “Priest is down Priest is down!”

You try not to flinch as the man with his gun pointed at you approaches, his barrel not wavering off of you.

Finally you hear “Clear!” shouted a few times, before another man in combat gear approaches you from behind and grabs your hands, pulling them down behind your back. You don’t resist, even if he is a little rough. You’ve seen much worse the few times you took prisoners and remember much worse from back when you regularly got kicked to be woken up.

The men pick you upright, not saying anything as you docilely comply with their unspoken orders. You do see a few of them look at you though, most seem to either not care or have a tinge of sadness in them. One however, seems pleased and gives you a tiny nod as you pass, being dragged out the door.
>>
>>37498728
You’re taken outside, where you find several trucks waiting, more people in uniforms by them, both men and women. You are taken to a group off to the side, along with a few other men that you recognize, all tied up. Most are wounded, a few aren’t. You guess that those who aren’t wounded surrendered like you did.

A clamor comes from behind the main compound, causing you to turn your head. Women and girls, many in blankets, are being led towards the trucks by the soldiers. A group of soldiers lead a few of the women towards your group. They whisper, pointing at everyone in the group. Most of the time the women nod their heads, a few timidly, one or two in anger. You’re at the end of the line. When they point at you, the women shake their heads no.

The rest of the men get drug off to a waiting truck, armed soldiers climbing in behind them, one of them looking like he just wants to shoot them all.

Another soldier approaches, with more stripes on his arms than the others.

“You seem to be ok kid,” he says, voice deep, “At least according to the women. Now, I know you shot that priest, but I’ve gotta ask you, have you killed anyone else?”

You can’t quite find it in you to actually say yes. But you won’t deny what you’ve done either. So you nod your head at the man, keeping your eyes on his face to see what passes. What you see is just a tinge of sadness, before he lets out a sigh.

“Don’t suppose you know how many?” he asks.

You shake your head no. You stopped counting after about ten, it was easier that way.

He sighs again.

“Alright kid, I’m gonna tell you what’s going to happen here. Firstly, I’ve gotta leave you tied up, orders. But I’m going to get you a blanket and let you ride in one of the trucks with the women folk and not with a guard as long as you promise to behave. You promise to behave right?”

You nod.

“Good,” he says, “I’ll see about getting you some food too, you’re too skinny for however old you are.”

You look down at yourself, whipcord thin and all lean muscle. You wouldn’t have guessed that yourself, but then again you haven’t eaten a lot in the past four years.

Time passes as the soldiers clean out the compound. Eventually someone brings you a bowl of some kind of stew. You’re allowed to eat under guard, but the soldiers don’t seem too concerned that you’ll try anything. When they tie you back up, you’re allowed to place your hands in front of your body instead of behind.

Eventually you’re led to a truck that seems to be mostly full of women. As the soldiers push you inside, a few of them flinch.

“Don’t worry ladies,” says one of them, “This one’s a good boy and he won’t bite.” The two of them share a chuckle as they shut the back of the truck, the gate slamming shut. You look around at the women, you haven’t really seen any up close in years except for the few times they were trying to kill you. A few of the women still shy away from you, a couple seem mildly aggressive. You decided to just look out the back of the truck and scrunch up as far away from them as you can get, it’s not like you know what to do around them anyway.

Once you get to the end of the truck ride, you’re taken off and away from the girls. You doubt you’ll ever see them again. From then on your life consists of little but paperwork, people talking to you and eating. You get to eat a lot compared to what you used to, though the cooks sometimes apologize for small portions. You just shake your head. Some of it even tastes good.

It’s been about a month since then and you’re in the office of your “councilor” an overworked lady who nevertheless tries to be polite while she tries to finish dealing with you as soon as possible.

“William, come in,” she says as you sit, “Are you excited to be leaving us?”

You shrug your shoulders. One thing you never quite did when you were learning to be useful was to talk a lot. Probably saved your butt once or twice.

Your councilor just smiles.

“Now, you know that you’ve been cleared of any wrong doing in your past,” she says, “And have been given a passing bill of physical health.”

You note she says nothing about your mental health.

“Unfortunately, when it came time to find you some employment, we really weren’t able to find anything in your skill set.”

You’ve heard this before, poor education, lack of actual training.

“However, we’ve managed to find a place for you to start re-integrating that will allow you to broaden your skill-set at the same time.”

You wonder how the hell they managed that, seeing as how your skills consist mostly of killing people and fixing the things that kill them.

“It’s on the frontier,” she says, holding out an honest to god business card, “But we feel you’ll fit right in.”

Holding the card you look at it. It’s exceedingly plain, with only a name and an address on it. It says “Morrigan Military Solutions LLC, Fort Riley Kansas.”

Well, you apparently have a job now and it sounds like one you have some experience in. Hopefully it doesn’t get you dead.

Alright, thank you all for participating in the opening of Mercenary 2030 quest, a quest which has a terrible terrible name because I'm shit at them.

I hope you found this interesting at least, perhaps possibly enjoyable.

I will now take questions and do my best to answer any you may have. No spoilers of course.

Thanks for running Guide. It's a complete 180 from HPQ, but it's pretty good so far.

And the fact that we have the means of making something dead but not for making out is hilarious. I look forward to William's future.

Kind of looks like it actually.

>>37499586
Suppressing all emotion mostly. There was a branch you didn't take where you could've sat and watched a guy bleed out, not vomiting would've lowered it, getting a "Friend" would've lowered it as well, except for different reasons.

Guessing that would've been from stabbing the guy rather than shooting him in the beginning?
>>

Depends on school and work. I'm also running HPQ, which I promised to finish up.

So, probably not a regular schedule for about a couple weeks. I mostly wanted to see if /tg/ would even enjoy this idea.

In character you just know that one day the power stopped working, then about a year later most of the other electronics did too.

You'll learn soon, I promise.

>>37499781
Implying I would do that.

>>37499786
Tuesdays and Thursdays are my usual days, probably after five if I can get everything going correctly. My classes are done then at least.
>>
>>37499787
that would have a lot more consequences that I am not sure Guide wants. Also that feels like a contrived lie by media. I could be over examining things
>>
>>37499818
What kind of consequences?
>>
>>37499814
A week later, not a year later, excuse me.
>>
>>37499835
If the solar radiation acted as a defacto emp in order for the effects to be enough that power distribution wouldn't work it would need to be able to blow up all transformers. (Most vulnerable part to emps). If it were capable of creating the kinds of eddy currents needed it would very likely have a magnetic field that would deform earth slightly. In addition to surface deformation most common metal objects would deform if not outright melt. That is just the tip of the iceberg.
>>
>>37499963
The atmosphere of earth would become heavily irradiated by beta emissions ands most plant life would die. Basically it would act as an extinction event. Not really what Guide is looking for.
>>
>>37499999
Huh. Cool.

Nice quints, ntw.
>>
>>37499999
>>37499963
What about whatever that Coronal Mass Ejection was?

Is that different?
>>
>>37500039
that's a solar flare
>>
>>37500014
A coronal mass ejection is an event closely tied with solar flares. Think of it as a giant storm of magnetic and radiation. I am discussing the impact of one the magnitude required to destroy internal shielded power transformers for power plants.
>>37500039
slightly different from a solar flare but to laymen they mean the same thing.
>>
>>37500072
http://www.universetoday.com/114729/nasa-explains-the-difference-between-cmes-and-solar-flares/

No they aren't.
>>
>>37500098
What would happen for the CME thing and power plants?

Looking it up it seems to have done damage before.
>>
>>37500178
Cmes are not exactly uncommon. In fact we have experienced small ones in the last 50 years. They will destroy power lines and transformers. The magnetic field effects on the magnetosphere will in turn create large broad spectrum electro-magnetic pulses. The interval will depend on the emission, but the frequency can be seen as an effect of energy level changes. This magnetic field will also exist around all magnetic objects within its path. Lots of satellites will be downed. In addition the emp created by the magnetosphere will reek havoc with electrical devices as it will create errant eddy current which due to resistance will heat up the metal. In addition the magnetic field will be moving creating addition eddy currents in short order. Thankfully measure have been taken at plants and power structures and many parts are isolated by faraday cages. I used the idea that the cages would need to be taken care of to calculate the destructive energy of the phenomenon.
>>
If guide is still hear make sure to archive the thread.
>>
>>37500329
Oh, that would be a lot. Probably wasn't that. Or at least not all of it.

>>37500398
It's already in the archive if you look.
>>
>>37500398
That gets taken care of at thread's start to avoid any misarchivals.
