Last time, on Feral Necromancer Quest:

You repeatedly failed to negotiate with elves. After defeating a scouting party in combat, you chose to spare their lives and let them go, in hopes of trying to diplomacize once more later. That being dealt with, you improved the weapons of your undead minions and your dwelling. You set out South, to find an ancient elven ruin. Once you found it, you learned that powerful necromatic energies permeated the very stone of the construction. You found an ancient elf skeleton king, with his soul still bound to his body by magic. You agreed to release him to death, and he gave you two boons- the comprehension of written elven, and his own sword, which was super dope. You decided to move in, but first returned to your cave for Bathory's skull and other odds and ends. Elves were waiting for you in force, but you just about managed to convince them to settle the matter peacefully. To make future alliance possible, the elder gave you one of his people as an apprentice in magic. That is where the third installment of Feral Necromancer Quest ended.

Nope, str2/agi1 won fair and square, I'm sure shamanistic stuff will go up soon enough. Hell, I've considered making it more appealing, but I cannot really do that without revealing the higher level spells. I guess I'll just go with what the votes say as much as I can.

Well I'm one of the guys who wanted the Str2/agi1 but I have to tell you. I was really close to goin for shamanistic. The only reason I chose str2/agi1 was because if something gets close to use we're fucked. And with Lathrien who doesn't like us as our apprentice I figured we should have a bit more defence in cqc considering we now also have a kickass sword.

You travel in silence. There is not much to say, and Lathrien does not seem to be up for small talk. It is just as well, while the elves had been stupidly stubborn and arrogant, it is true that you likely have killed some of his friends, and raised them as undead. When you actually see the ruin, Lathrien looks suitably shocked and awed.

When you cross the threshold, however he all but jumps. Of course, without necromancer training the energies of the place would feel quite uncomfortable. You are happy that he can feel it at least.

'First things first. No murdering me.' You say

>Be cruel. Beatings for failures, absolute obedience.
>Be strict. Punish stupidity, reward brilliance, forbid violence and backtalk
>Be reasonable. Punish violence or blatant disrespect. Reward good behaviour and success.

You will call me by my proper name, Tepish, and you will do no violence against me or those under my protection. If you can do that and are willing to learn we will get along fine.' You say.

'That's... You killed my friends and are using them as puppets. How can I...'

'That is just what I mean about disrespect. The matter is settled between me and your elder. I will let it slide this time, and we can discuss exactly what happened, if you are willing to listen to reason.'

'Excellent. Well, there is no time like present to start your training. First of all you will have to get accustomed to working around the undead. This place needs a good clean and we can order the dead to do it. I expect you to put in the same work as the dead at least, until you can control them.' You say.

'How do I do that?'

'You can channel energy, I assume. It is a simple matter to control the dead, provided no one else is controlling them at the time. Channel your will where their brain would be and try to change their behavior. It will be uncomfortable at first.'

'Yes, Vlad Tepish.'

Set the minions and Lathrien to work, but watch Lathrien closely. If he does what he's told and works hard reward him by teaching him something useful. Plus working alongside the dead will help him get into the necromancers mindset.

If he mouths off or is lazy, make him do something gruesome like clean up/reinforce the zombies. He needs to learn to obey first, then the necro-goods.

Necromancy Nat 20! Critical Success. Awareness 12. Failure, made successful with the crit. Also progress to Awareness 2 [1/2].

Loosening control to the brink of losing it has been a long time training practice for you. In these necromancy infused halls it comes to you as easily as breathing. You command one of the dead to stand still and lower its defences, and then all but lose control of it. It is somewhat fun.

'Start by trying to control that one' You say.

'But that's Glorin.'

'No, that is a dead body. Your friend has moved on.'

'I will try.'

The kid tries. You remember the first time you tried to control a body that had no spirit within. It is a hollow, cold sensation. It gets better with time, or maybe you simply get used to it. Either way, when the kid's face goes pale and you see the look of fear in his eyes you know he has succeeded. He remains silent and cleans with his zombie friend, avoiding you, but apparently doing good work.

You command your undead to carry out anything rotten or beyond repair and join them in cleaning. You still have trouble processing just how large this place is. You might believe it a great cavern or cave, but to believe it was crafted by mortal hands stretches your belief. There is so much lost potential in this world.

You lose yourself in the monotony of cleaning, and almost fail to notice several pieces of carved bone, wondrous in craftsmanship, but luckily your undead feel a slight spark of thought upon touching them. Much like everything else in this place the tools required for such precision have been lost to history.

You also find sufficient skeletons of long-dead elves to raise dead up to your maximum capacity. You now control 30/30 minions, 24 skeletons.

These are valuable, but you do not know how valuable yet. They might even have some magical purpose from how your undead reacted to them. You hide the carvings in one of your pockets, and with the vast amount of undead under your control you finish the job in less than an hour. It has grown dark, but you think you should check on your new apprentice, if only to see if he is plotting to kill you.

You find him crouching on the floor, face in his hands, barely keeping from sobbing. Damn, maybe you had talent for this kind of thing that the kid doesn't.

'Vlad Tepish! Take him away, please.' You do.

'Sorry, kid, I did not expect it to affect you so,'

'How do you deal with it, all the time, the cold and the... nothing.'

'You get used to it. It gets better over time. That said,'

>>
>>37506478
Shamanistic Necromancy is kinda the fusion between Necromancy and Shamanistic Magic. It would take ridiculous amounts of time and effort to teach it, as you learned it mostly through circumstance, but if you want to go with that I can add it as an option.
>>
>>37506440
>It's just growing pains. He is weaker than you were, but the only way he will grow strong is by training. Continue teaching him necromancy

We should make him do basic drills before something as 'advanced' as controlling corpses. Meditating amongst the dead, contemplating death-dieties, make him kill a small animal then keep its corpse with him and study the decomposition etc etc.

Grim stuff, but we arent teaching him flower arranging. Furthermore it will alter his mindset, making him 'less' an elf and 'more' a necromancer and thus more akin to us than his former tribe.

Shamanism.
>>
>>37506440

One of the benefits of Necromancy is a true appreciation for the work of archeologists and a respect for history. These may well be cultural relics of great import. We should treat them with care.

'I like that idea a whole lot better than doing THIS again.'

'Very well. The workings of the shaman involve a lot of lengthy and sometimes painful ritual, and are best done by daylight. You can retire for the night. I recommend you sleep in here to get used to the place, but I will understand if you want to sleep outdoors.'

'I will, sure.'

The knowledge tempts you. The hundreds upon hundreds of tomes, brilliant, forgotten knowledge within each of them. You can sleep if and when you are dead.

On the other hand, your thoughts linger on Bathory. She asked you not to speak with her, but she has to know you are working on your promise. Even if it is just hateful screams, maybe your presence will alleviate some of her anger eventually.

It would be only selfishness to not speak to her. She is more than alone in her binding, she must be bored out of her mind. You have to remember what it was you broke your tribes taboo for.

You pick up Bathory's skull and press your forehead to it. You can get a much stronger connection that way, although it is also more dangerous. You refuse to play it safe this time around.

'Bathory, my love.'

'Vlad. What is it that you want.'

'That is sweet. I know you only did what you did because you cared, but it does not change things between us. It does not change what you have done to me.'

'I am so sorry,'

'Do not apologize. The Vlad Tepish I know does not apologize for his failures, he fixes them.'

'Yes, my love, I suppose I do.'

'Good, now get back to work.'

'Yes, love.'

'Oh and... Feel free to come by and talk again. It is dreadfully quiet in here.'

You keep the connection strong until you doze off and go to sleep. You speak no more words, but you feel each other's presence in your very soul.

Congratulations! Bathory no longer hates you. She still cannot forgive what you have done, but will talk to you now.

You wake up alone.

Many of the books are in a dangerous condition. You have to be cautious when you read them. And generally have to focus your attention. Everyone seems to agree to train Lathrien.

You find him sprawled on the ground just outside the ruin.

'Wake up, it is time for your training.'

'Wha... Yes, Vlad Tepish.'

>Instruct him on what to do, go back inside and read (your master let you do your own thing most of the time)

He will like this more and the more we get him to like us the more we can trust him with bigger tasks, like #1 transcribing the ancient writings onto a better medium. Actually is this something we could have zombies, or skeletons do?

13 Slightly above average success.

You quickly realize you are a little rusty yourself. You have not called for the spirits of the air in quite some time, and might have done a little to offend them. At least drawing blood will be easier now that you have a knife. Kids these days get everything handed to them.

First, you remove your vest, so your chest is bare to the elements. You sit down in the meditative position that your master taught you. You open your mind to the spirits of the wild around you.

The spirit of Earth around here is an old, calm being. The spirits of the air are vicious and angry. This is fine for your purposes, whatever they might have taken offense to.

You take the bronze dagger and start cutting a shape in your chest. For a while, nothing happens. Then, a light rain begins. The second that the rainwater, mixed with your blood hits the ground, the sky goes dark, the wind starts howling and rain falls down in a deluge. The storm becomes so heavy it is difficult to keep sitting straight.

You look at Lathrien and see awe in his face. Good. The majority of your motivation for excellence was just how damn impressive your own master made the magic look.

You hold the spell for a few minutes, and then release the binding. And just like that, the sky clears, the wind stops and the natural order is restored.

'Did you catch that'

'Yes, Vlad Tepish! How do I do that?'

'Months of training. We will start with just the rain. Do as I did, open your mind and listen hard to the spirits. When you can hear them, give blood to the earth.'

Its ALWAYS good to start your apprentice off humble. Its why the cliche of making them do housework/bitchwork is so common, teach them humility and patience doing all that. Then let them put that patience and lack of arrogance to the real learning. If they can't handle the first stage they were either going to die horribly in the next or give up/explode in frustration. You always do this part.

Success!

The methods of the crafting of the ancients fascinate you, but it would be treason to your craft to not learn anything of necromancy. You start with a book on the basics of Alchemy. It claims that at higher levels you can learn to do stuff like creating artificial bodies, and has references to other books in the library. Technically it is comprehensible, but you feel like you should start with something simpler, just in case.

Then you dive deep into researching how to transfer souls, reanimate bodies and general necromantic research. Most of the 'true' resurrection you find seems little more than myth to make a religion more appealing, but there is some promise in moving spirits from one vessel to another. You would have to improvise on how to let Bathory take control of the new body, but it is a start, certainly. The real problem is, that you would need to find a body that is alive, but has no soul within it.

>Experiment as much as you can with alchemy. This seems to be the obvious path to giving Bathory a body
>Experiment with moving spirits around. You have two that are rather expendable.

Best time to get a one, really, as critfails give you more training in a skill than regular successes. (It says so right there in the pastebin)

1 Critical Failure. On the up side, You have learned Alchemy 1

On the downside:

Alchemist's fire. That seems simple enough, and you would like being able to create fire without using the soul of a damned gnoll. You are quite certain that the books are flammable, so you move into the next room and start practicing with what you can find in the ruins and just outside.

You must have added too much of SOMETHING, as the thick liquid bursts into green flame, starts bubbling and spread all over the stone table you had been working on. You think you can control it, but it does not go out and starts spreading at a disturbing speed.

>Shit! Shit! Shit! The books are next doors.
>Literally have all of your undead pile up on the fire.
>Run to get the staff of the gnoll pyromancer. He will be able to control it, but you left the staff in another room

Nat 20! Critcal Success! You can now cover your skeletons in Alchemist's fire. They will burn up eventually, but there is nothing that counters a burning skeleton in a tribal setting.

You are quick to command your undead to cover the fire with their bodies. As soon as one catches fire, you command it to run out and the next one takes its place. You take casualties, but none of them are books, so you are happy with the result. You probably disturbed Lathrien's meditations, but the books were in danger.

Yet you seem to manage with a cuirous regularity. I know the odds in theory, but this quest has a lot of bad luck.

Nat 20! Critical Success. You have learned Linguistics 1.

Lathrien proves to be a very capable teacher. It helps that you have a solid foundation, but you soon realize that your accent is atrociously harsh and that Elven is a language that relies entirely on subtleties and metaphor. Your direct speech sounds strange. Finally, your vocabulary could use some work.

You address the first two issues fully, and get a solid start on the third. You have learned in two days more Elven than most do in lifetime and you can converse freely in this language with no penalties.

The time you spend talking with Lathrien also helps him see you as a person, rather than a strange necromancer that killed his friends.

>Your relationship with Lathrien has improved.

>There are still a few hours of daylight. Have Lathrien work on his meditation, go read some books.
>That was a fun distraction, but you should really go practice Alchemy some more.

Okay, guys. We're at the bump limit. I might return in half an hour with a new thread, but for now I'll just note the success and look at leveling.

While you technically did not resolve a major plot element, you sure as hell advanced a whole bunch of them. You get 2 exp.

I am also going to allow you to spend exp on skills that you have books on up to rank 3, at the cost of one point per rank. You still have to learn the skill the normal way for rank 1 and can only advance it with criticals after rank 3.

Let me set up the suptg, twitter is @DeadQM. Suggestions and votes for levels are now.
>>
We should focus pretty hard on alchemy for a bit, then we can build Bathory like a Galatea tier body.
>>
>>37509670
Eh, sure. Let's level alchemy.

Can we get some smithing or metallurgy ranks?
>>

invest all the points into shamanism.

Exp vote is for raising Int. It should be our highest stat and it's below Str.

Looks like it's finally (marginally) happened

You have reached Shamanism II
You have learned the following spells:
Call elements (Frost, Lightning)
>Lightning- the most precise spell of the Call Elements type, it can be used to directly attack dozens of people with relatively little collateral damage. It still takes 30 mins to an hour to cast.
>Frost: Obvious utility in refrigeration, but can also be used to further penalize the living within desecrated land.

Bind Spirit II: You can bestow one of the following to the bound spirits: sight, speech, hearing, touch. Also flavourwise, if you bestow sight the skull gets glowing eyes, if you bestow hearing sticky black blood will slowly pour out of the ear canals, and if you bestow speech the jaw will move idly.

Finally, the cost of animal minions is halved. Your elk mount now only costs one minion slot, and so you now control 25/30 minions.
>>
>>37510134
Wait, what about the skeletons that we burned while rescuing the books? We still have them?
>>
>>37510203
You raised up to 30 early in the quest, then lost four in the fire.
>>
>>37510203

nah, we lost like 4 of them.

>>37510134

let's not give her speech.
>>
>>37510203
Doubt it but we discovered an undead suicide bomber. theres about nothing anyone can do to fend of flaming death hugs right now unless they know magic and how to whip it out really fast.
>>
>>37510203
Naw those where the 4 that we lost.
>>
>>37510134
>Lightning

Could come in handy for some Frankenstein type shennanigans.

>Frost, cheaper animals

Did we just go full white walker?
>>
>>37510110
>>37510066
>>37510048

>>
>>37510250
Yes we very much can go full white walker
>>
>>37510250
I rather not screw with the wildlife like that, but whatever ends up on our plate as food, we might as well have them guard us afterwards
>>
>>37510226
Aren't there enough skeletons in the ruins that we can just replace them? I thought there were like thousands around when we met that old dude bound to his own skull.
>>
>>37510279
Unlike desecrate land, the Call Elements rituals are not permanent. While the frost would stick around for a while if you made it cold enough, you could not fully change the climate of an area, unless you were willing to meditate like 12 hours a day.

>>37510298

There are enough for now, but it's becoming a limited resource, so I won't automatically assume you reanimated them, unless a battle type situation occurs. The skeletons around the elven king literally crumbled to dust when he released them. There are ~100 scattered around the ruins in a usable condition.

>armor intact?

Can we wear it without affecting our ability to use magic?
>>
>>37510452
The armor is rusted enough that it kind of provides no real protection beyond maybe the first hit. No real mechanical difference.

>>37510494
Wearing armor would only inhibit the casting of ritual spells, without any penalty to combat spells, with the exception of badly crafted cumbersome armor. Even full plate, if well made is really quite flexible.
>>
