Volume One: Path to Immortality
Chapter Five: Herp-d-derp, I'm starting a quest at 00:30 edition.

Last time, on Feral Necromancer Quest: You did a lot of housekeeping and chores. You cleaned up the ruins you are staying in. You communed with Bathory, and re-established a venue of communication. You learned a little alchemy and nearly burned the library down. You taught Lathrian some Shamanistic magic, and a little bit of necromancy, but not enough to be properly capable in either. He dislikes you less now. You were reading some books on engineering when the conclusion of Feral Necromancer Quest four came.

Housekeeping:
Previous Threads:
http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive.html?searchall=feral+necromancer

Mechanics and Character Sheet: http://pastebin.com/vBRyBWfK

Twitter: @DeadQM

Your literacy and library now allows you to learn certain skills with experience up to rank 3 at the cost of 1exp per point.
>>
Welp I'm glad I stayed up then. Get yourself settled in and setup. we have to wait for other players anyway. If you're bored look up the giant civ going on while you wait.

We're about to either pull an A-TEAM out of our ass or die gloriously and I love it.
>>
You are Vlad Tepish

Your holdings: Ancient Elven Ruin. Well hidden and fortified cave.

Your Minions: 25/30 max, mix of skeletons and zombies plus your skeletal elk mount.

Your Relationships: Gnoll tribe of 20 (allies/treacherous bastards), Lathrien (Suspicious), Bathory (Bitter), Bound Gnoll Spirit (Bound), Bound Elven Spirit (Bound).

Your Skills, Stats, Traits, Spells: http://pastebin.com/vBRyBWfK

Your Goals: Create a body for Bathory, Achieve Immortality, Keep your land.

Researching Engineering:
19! Great success.

The formulae and the information in these books make a lot of sense. The interaction of gears, pulleys and levers are all cold, logical and exactly the kind of thing you know how to deal with. Your undead minions are much the same. The problem is how much has been lost. The books show you amazing devices, but to make the parts for them you need the proper tools, and you need proper tools to make THOSE tools ad nauseum. This could still certainly be useful in construction and the like.

You start reading the autobiography of the necromancer king that dwelt here hundreds of years before you. You start reading and it is the story of a young elf, chosen to be the one in his 'city' to learn the darker arts, to be a protector in the communities darkest times. Much of what is written does not make much sense to you, lacking context.

Commune with the spirit of the gnoll elder wins.

You take your staff. You have used the gnoll elder's spirit for calling fire before, but never have you actually talked to the spirit. You were quite excited at the prospect of learning pyromancy, but so many other things got in the way.

You touch the awkward canine skull on the forehead.

'THE THINGS FROM DEPTH SHALL BURN YOUR SINEWS FROM THE INSIDE OUT...'

Maybe. Maybe not.

'Silence.'

It falls silent.

>>37513966
The first thing the elf said before you started ordering it to answer questions was 'please release me'. Also magic kinda helps keep you control of your spirit. The gnoll is completely bound, as you just understand spirits way WAY more than it does.

15. Marginal failure. Rolling at +3 next time (which can be now, but countdown will advance)

You get it. You really do. It is just that you have never been a hateful person. Sure, you've gotten angry, very angry indeed. Annoyed. A little cruel and vindictive. But hatred always felt like emotion of the weak for you. Caring so much about something you dislike never made sense to you.

Some cinders fly from your fingertips by the end of the hour long session, but not enough to even light a campfire.

Critical failure.

This is a waste of time. If there is anything you might learn to hate it is the casting of this spell. There is something about it, just outside the instruction the gnoll is giving you that would let you get it. But the gnoll does not know it. It knows one way to cast these spells and it is through rage. By now he is entirely unhelpful. (Since there is no magic 'skill' you can learn from crits, I am considering adding something a bit more contextual to magical crits/critfails). We will see.

COUNTDOWN TO ???: 8 Is it someone watching you, or... no, that's not it.

'Lathrien!' you shout. It would take too much time to find him. You have a good shouting voice.

A minute later your apprentice shows up.

'What is wrong, Vlad Tepish?'

'Do you feel something weird? Something wrong?'

'I do not feel hurt by the necromantic energies so much anymore, if that's what you mean.'

'Damn it.'

'Wait, now you've mentioned it, if I really focus...'

'No matter, we are setting up a defensible position in here. Bar the entrances with heavy things, preferably something we can move at moments notice. I will raise more dead.'

You are fast and skilled and the raising of the dead in the desecrated ruin is easy. It still takes time, however. You control 40/30 max minions. Your control is absolute while on desecrated ground.

COUNTDOWN TO???: 7 It is magic. Your senses are better attuned than Lathriens, that is why you noticed it immediately.

Okay, preparing the rituals seems to be in a fairly reasonable lead.

Calling the elements will be very useful indeed if you find yourself in a siege, or some similar situation. You prepare the ritual for calling lightning. You prepare the ritual for calling storm. And just in case, if everything goes tits up, you prepare the ritual for earthquake, if you need to take the bastards down with you.

Lathrien has become very quiet as well. He heard you scream earlier, and he sees you scurrying about, rushing all the defences you can think of.

You leave the ruin. The barricades are easily re-arranged from the inside, but would be impassable once you closed them, aside from someone hacking through.

You find higher ground, but stay out of sight and try to look in the direction you feel the foreboding coming from. The first thing is obvious. Pitch black clouds have gathered over an area of the forest to the west.

Stealth- 21 Great success. You meld with the trees, and hush the spirits of the plants that would give you away with a touch of magic.

Awareness: 16 Fair success.

The only reason you did not realize what you were seeing right away was that it was too large to comprehend as a single creature. It is ten, eleven times larger than your elk, and somehow you suspect it is merely a young one. A black serpent, ridged and mean looking is moving in swift, silent motions directly towards you. You realize it is the source of the foreboding, and how absolutely screwed you are.

Then you hear something from behind you.

'RRWAAARGH!' a hundred voices shout. You turn to look, remaining hidden, and a massive force, more humanoids than you have ever seen in one place- at least sixty in number is charging from the opposite direction.

Green skinned and muscular, you recognize the orcs from stories. But where they are supposed to be mindless brutes, these have large, black obsidian tipped spears, three are carrying a giant net and one, a leader by the looks of it a great oaken staff and is leading the charge, you understand in terror, also directly towards your location.

Orcs are a dime a dozen. Everyone has heard of them, so they cannot be rare. They are also violent and enjoy needless bloodshed. Not worthy to be allies. You silently order your undead to move into position to be ready to join the fray. Then you sneak back inside and start working on the ritual to call lightning.

Guys, I don't even. Nat 1. Critical Failure. Next critical success in casting magic will have triple effect. Don't waste it on wand polishing or something.

There is something a bit off about the lightning. It certainly works, but the bolts fall a little more randomly than you hoped. Many an orc is smitten by the bolts of electricity, but you hit the dragon by accident a couple of times too. It seems to shrug it off, mostly.

Your control of undead is, as always superb. They wade in, perfect formation to the orcish random horde and deal fair casualties. The weapons of the orcs are ill suited to facing your undead, and their battle with the black dragon is taking most of their focus, so while you kill dozens, only a few of your minions fall.

The orcish caster, seeing your involvement seems to panic for a brief second, but then screams out. What looks like an empty pit on the ground opens up and something is crawling out of it.

The dragon seems to be playful about this whole thing, swatting closer orcs aside, bisecting them with razor claws, that kind of thing.

The odds right now: 47 orcs, 34 minions (not counting your mount), one mildly singed dragon.

>The odds are in your favour now. Join the fight personally. You need to be seen taking part in it to be clear about your allegiances.

19! Great success!

Targeting the orcish caster, and whatever filth he hoped to call from below first, with a great crack you leave a singed corpse in a single bolt. Other bolts fall on other orcs, but your second casting took precious minutes. Your undead fight without pity, but when the orcs realize that unlike the dragon they are actively going for the kill every strike they re-focus their attention and the battle starts becoming more about atrocity than tactics.

23! Great Success!

On the field of battle you become death incarnate. Perhaps it is because the orcs are tired, confused and afraid. Perhaps, your undead are ample distraction. Perhaps the sword is even finer than you expected.

Whatever the case, each time you strike with your blade, it connects and slices through whatever it hits, and you strike fast and hard. The orcs, fall, break and flee. You are face to face with a dragon. Now that you are up close, you realize it is not in that good of a state.

One of its eyes has been stabbed out, and multiple spears have pierced its skin.

'Mortal, you would take my prey from me? What will you give me for such arrogance?'

>'You can have this.' Raise your sword, then stab the fucker through the head.

23 Success!

'Come closer, my gift is small, but valuable.'

It actually does that. So of course, you stab it in the other eye and drain its lifeforce. It is a heady liquor indeed.

It is still a dragon, they are called undying by many. You have tested this theory to a point so far, and evidence seems to suggest otherwise. Nonetheless, it does not go down quite yet.

It breathes black acid, spraying the forest and eating trees in front of your very eyes. It thrashes around like possessed. It rages at you and shouts insults that are highly improbable, regardless of who it thinks your mother was.

Dodge 19 Great Success:

The attacks may be vicious, but they are blind and mindless. The arcs are wide and the sprays are so random that you hardly have to dodge out of the way. Aside from some mild singeing from random droplets you are not hit at all.

From there it is simply the matter of waiting for an opening. It moves its head right in front of you, opens its jaws, ready to breathe acid once more, but you are faster. You stab it in the throat and do not stop channeling negative energy directly into its brain until it dies.

While the idea of binding the dragons spirit to your already awesome sword is enticing, you do not know how it might mess with the magics in its enchantment. Instead, you break out one of its teeth (it takes work), and bind the spirit to that instead. You think you could fit it with a passable handle and then you would have a:

Shortsword of Acid. Aside from dealing extra damage to armour, you could force the spirit within to use magic to cast Acid Spray 3x/Day.

You move on to the orcish caster. You do a quick binding, and bind him to his skull. The soul actually feels dirty.

You have a Skull of Summoning. Do you really want to find out what it does?

I'd only EVER use that fucking demon summoning skull to figure out the creatures in hell to better fight them or something.

We're a necromancer not a devil worshiper we have STANDARDS (I hope)
>>

If the soul is safely bound and won't get away let's wait to discover its magic. I definitely don't want to deal with demons while in overcasting mode.
>>
>>37518253
Fucking no. Get the apprentice to come tear out another fang, and then make some for the elves and gnolls.
>>
>>37518300
I certainly do. I didn't even want to fucking bind it it's too dangerous.
>>
>>37518300
Depends on the devils in this setting. If we can eke out an advantageous deal with one I'm all for it.
>>
>>37518253
And I am going to call it there for tonight.

You sure got primary shit done. Giving Bathory sight is also certainly a move in the right direction for a secondary goal. You gain 3 exp.

http://pastebin.com/vBRyBWfK for rules for leveling up.

http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive.html?searchall=feral+necromancer Bigger numbers inflate my ego and stroke my narcissism. Vote if you want.

>>37518300
I should clarify, that last binding took you over the limit, not using the skull of summoning. Ya gotta roll anyways, I wouldn't end the quest with something like that.
>>
Rolled 1 + 1 (1d20 + 1)

>>37518353
ok, rolling
For exp I vote we up necromancy and Intelligence. Necromancy has a cost of 1 since we read those books, right?
>>
>>37518408
OH NO WHAT HAVE I DONE
>>
>>37518408
No anon, that's for skills like stealth and construction.
>>37518353
Level alchemy and crafting??
>>
>>37518408
Necromancy books will generally only give you story related spells. You still got to upgrade your necromancy in the usual way. Something like Alchemy or other skills costs 1.

Also with that roll I guess I'm gonna have to do a fucking dream sequence at the start of next session.
>>
>>37518408
> We pass out, so do our zombles
> Demons pour out of the skull's eyes
> Inhabit dragon's body, dracolichdemon in progress

Everything dies

Twitter @DeadQM, next session most likely Saturday at around 10PM GMT, unless I feel like I totally want to do more quest tomorrow.
>>
>>37518408
And congrats you probably just fucking killed us or crippled us at the least.

This shits why you don't fuck with demonic powers that be.
>>
>>37518541
but we voted not to fuck around with the skull yet tho?
>>
>>37518539
Some leveling options, as no strong preference is obvious:

1 Necromancy 4, Alchemy 2
2 Necromancy 4, Bank 1
3 Intelligence 2, Alchemy 2
4 Other Stat 2, Alchemy 2
>>
>>37518569
Still bound it. still probably gonna kill us as we passout without dealing with it properly.

Because nat 1s just make bad things happen.

Doesn't matter. Overextended magic use, but it has nothing to do with the demons. Probably just gonna have to rest for a while. Hopefully Latharian won't do too much shit,
>>
>>37518595
I suppose I should also add
5 Shamanism 3 as a fairly good option
