The mortars whistle over you. You cover your head and stick as close to the ground as you can. The mortars explode. You're safe, at least for the moment.

You crawl onwards through the muck of dirt and blood and piss and vomit. Just the sight of it is enough to make you retch, but you have no choice but to keep moving. It's your job.

It's your survival.

You snake around the Imperial position and spot an enemy sniper leaning casually against a tank. The sniper casually raises his rifle and shoots. Schreiner's head explodes from the bullet.

The mortars whistle again. Once again, you protect your head. The mortars explode, but the whistling doesn't stop. They're still flying. You're not safe anymore.

The Imperial sniper prepares another shot.

You look at the Imperial troops gathered ahead of you, then at the sniper. You need to continue your mission.

You raise your rifle towards the sniper's chest and fire. The force of the impact slams him against the side of the tank and turns his body towards you. Blood pours from his chest wound and from his mouth. His lip quivers and he reaches out for you with his hand.

"Why…" He whimpers softly and more blood pours out of his mouth. "Why did you kill me?"

His hand drops.

"Why does it hurt so much?"

The sniper cries bloodstained tears and continues to mumble incoherently. His skull cracks open from a bullet wound you didn't make and his brain matter blubbers out. He doesn't stop crying.

You remember all the other soldiers you killed. Why did they have to die?

>"I didn't want to do this. You're the ones who invaded Gallia. This is your fault."

"This is war," you say. "That's all it is."

You walk away from the sniper. He turns his head with what little strength he has left and watches you leave.

"This is war?" He asks. "I didn't know. I didn't know."

"I did," you whisper to yourself. "Even if I didn't really understand, I knew what I was getting into. I can accept it."

You continue your journey towards the Imperial troops. Your boots sink into the morass of bloated, putrefied corpses.

You're not in a plain or a battlefield. You're in a city. This is Velde, your hometown and your dominion. You remember this place, but not like this.

The city walls are shattered and Imperial troops are pouring through. The workshops and houses are burning. Imperial Tanks are rolling through the streets, crushing everything and everyone in their way.

You look for your family's manor. Velde is swarming with Imperials, but this is your city. You know your way around better than anyone. You duck into the alleys and climb your way to the rooftops. Jumping from across roofs, you head towards your home. You land on the fence, then drop into your courtyard, but you're not done. You run through the front door, up the stairs, all the way up to the manor's signature belltower. You barricade the door behind you and set your rifle on the side of the belltower.

You look for the nearest Imperial soldier and shoot him. Then you shoot another. Then another. When you run out of bullets, you get more from a nearby box of ammunition.

"I can do this all day," you say to yourself.

Tank shells fall upon your manor and the belltower itself, but you ignore them and focus on your task.

"I can do this all day," you say again. "WHO WANTS TO SEND A MESSAGE TO GALLIA?"

The Imperial tanks roll over the dead soldiers, but their tracks sink into the corpses, throwing off their balance.

You hear someone calling your name, then something pokes you in your ribs.

You wake up to see Jetje looming over you.

"Good morning," she says. "Rough night?"

"You could say that," you say as you sit yourself up. "Has there been news?"

"Just fighting in the trenches," she says. "The usual."

Jetje hands you a cup of coffee. It has a slight aftertaste of pea soup, but the aroma of the coffee overpowers it enough that you don't mind too much. Lunch will taste like coffee, but you'll complain about that later.

"According to Major Lenier's adjutants, we'll be getting specialized troops to deal with the tanks later today," Jetje says. "Until then, we still have time off."

You'll need to schedule some training if you do get a new addition to your team, but for the moment, you can rest a little.

"I'll have a walk around," you say. "I can use some exercise that's not life-threatening."

"Just remember to get dressed first," Jetje says. "Unless you want to give the troops a show."

"Sadly, my legs are not that sexy," you say. "Enjoy your day off and report to the courtyard once the new troops arrive. If we get anyone new, we'll need to get them up to speed."

"Sure thing."

You put on your uniform. Your appearance is a mess - you haven't shaved in more than a week for starters - but you don't have the time or tools to make yourself presentable. The Gallian Army hasn't seen fit to bring in a barber.

You look out the window before heading out. The Gallian and Imperial trenches have been dug in. They're not very large, but they are a twisted, winding labyrinth. Even in trench warfare, your most significant advantage is still the citadel. If the Imperials try to sneak into your lines, they'll be spotted immediately.

You leave room - it's private, but it's barely larger than a closet and it'll go to someone else once your turn with it is over - and head for the stairs. It's a nice day out and no one will suspect you of desertion if you wander around, so you have quite a few places you could visit.

You decide to visit the courtyard on your way to the mountain trails. You've got time to spare anyway.

The courtyard on the Gallian side of the border is empty. There are some people out and about, but they all look like they're on official business. You'd expect some people to eat or rest here. Most of the troops must be either in the trenches or safe in the citadel.

You do find one person swinging a sword under the shade.

"Still practicing, Karl?"

"Every day." He swings his heavy longsword up and down in clean, practiced slashes. "Running around with all the equipment all takes effort."

"So I've been told," you say. "Personally, I rather like skulking about."

"To each their own," Karl says.

You sit against the tree and watch Karl practice.

"I heard we were getting reinforcements," you say. "Did you think about getting your team again?"

"A little," Karl says. "I understand I need to live up to my rank, but it's not that easy. Honestly, I'd rather wait until you make captain so I can stay your subordinate. The chain of command we had in Teschelbero was too weak. I'm a fencer, so I don't have a full picture of the battlefield. I need some direction to work effectively."

>"Sorry, I like being a first lieutenant. The responsibility is just the right side."
>"I'm hoping to make captain before we're assigned somewhere else, assuming the Gallian Army has the troops to spare."
>"I can keep you around until I'm a general."

"I'm hoping to make captain before we're assigned somewhere else," you say. "Assuming the Gallian Army has the troops to spare."

"You could poach some recruits from the militia," Karl says.

"I'd rather not unless I have to," you say. "The militia is useful for basic manoeuvres, but I think a small team of specialists is more useful for the missions we've had to deal with. Then again, the team will get bigger anyway if I do get promoted."

You stand up and brush the grass off your pants.

"Anyway, I'm heading up the mountain," you say. "Good luck with your training."

"Have fun with your mountain climbing," Karl says.

Although Karl called it mountain climbing, it's not nearly as difficult. There are a few trails specifically to train troops and to provide additional fallback points in case something goes wrong and the citadel falls.

You find the nearest such trail and start walking. It's uphill, but it's not the most tiring thing you've done.

After half an hour of walking, you see Vanessa coming your way.

"Hello, Renard," she says. "Did you come up here to exercise too?"

"Just a bit," you say. "We're expecting new troops soon and I'd like to have a look at them."

You fall into step next to Vanessa and follow her back down the trail.

"It's strange," she says. "I wanted a break from the strain of fighting, but I decided to go up a mountain."

"Exercise is much easier when no one is shooting at you," you say.

"I suppose that's true."

Vanessa slows down her pace and looks at you.

"There is something I've been meaning to talk to you about, if you don't mind," she says.

"You can always ask."

"You know how General Gunther promised that all Darcsen who joined the Gallian Army would be allowed to have a last name?"

"I'm vaguely aware of it," you say.

"Do you think… do you really think I'll be able to keep my name after this is over?"

>"Honestly? I doubt it."
>"Honestly? I doubt it'll matter much."
>"Of course. Why not?"

"I'm thinking that regardless of what happens, you'll have earned it, and that's all that matters. I think it's highly unlikely the government will risk civil unrest originating from trained soldiers right after such a large-scale war, though that is assuming we win."

"Of course," you say. "Why not?"

"Well, I heard his proposal wasn't very popular with the nobility. Or the rest of the military. Or the rest of the public." Vanessa looks down. "I'm just worried… even if General Gunther wants to keep his promise, what if he doesn't make it through the war?"

"Generals rarely fight on the front lines," you say. "He'll make it out fine."

You pat Vanessa on the back.

"Come on, let's get back," you say. "We have new troops waiting for us."

Said troops are standing information outside the citadel as you arrive. The major is standing in front of them, handing their assignments. He waves you over.

"First Lieutenant de Velde, I have a new lancer for you," he says.

"Lancer, sir?"

"Our new weapon to deal with tanks," Major Lenier says. "The lances fire rockets capable of penetrating a tank's armour or destroying its tracks. We don't have many, but we should have enough to fend off the next Imperial attack. Here are the folders I reserved for you."

The first name on the list is John Matrix, a trained scout with some experience with explosives. His performance record is extremely impressive.
>Potential - "Fuck you, asshole": Once per battle, John Matrix may ignore one failed defensive roll as his opponent runs out of ammunition.

The second name is William Nelson, a noted chemist and physicist. According to his application documents, he joined the army to make things explode.
>Potential - SCIENCE!: On a failed accuracy roll, William Nelson still destroys a tank's tracks with the power of his explosives.

The third name is Stella Lorentz. She went to prison for setting several factories on fire. She seems to have an anti-industrial political agenda.
>Potential - Terror Tactics: After a successful attack, the enemy's morale drops, decreasing the DC of her next roll by 10.

"Your call," Major Lenier says. "Sergeant Nelson, here's your new commanding officer!"

"Yes, sir." Nelson steps out of the line to meet you. "Sergeant William Nelson, sir. I'm ready to serve."

"Welcome aboard, sergeant," you say. "The rules are simple. We keep it casual when we're off work, but I need discipline on the battlefield. Clear?"

"Absolutely clear," William says. "I'm looking forward to it."

"Come on, let's take care of introductions."

You lead William to a corner of the courtyard where the rest of your team is waiting and go through the usual introductions.

You go over your recent battles and pay special attention to bringing William into the team and figuring out how his lance will alter your strategies. It'll be most effective against tanks, but it'll still ruin an infantry soldier's day if they get hit square in the face.

"That's enough for today," you say. "We'll test things out during the next battle."

"That doesn't exactly fill me with confidence," Nina says.

"It's not like we have a lot of options," you say. "Come on, let's see what the armoury has for us."

You shuffle over to Gaul office or stash or whatever Gaul calls his corner of the citadel. Coincidentally, he's unloading crates of lances as you arrive.

You spend some time going over the new equipment, particularly the lance and the grenades. You don't want them to explode in your face. Afterwards, you gather your team.

"All right people," you say. "In all likelihood, our next mission will be a two-step offensive. We need to intercept the incoming Imperial reinforcements, but we can't do that without pulling the Imperials out of their trenches. Get ready for a tough fight. In the meantime, enjoy your break."
