Tonight’s streets must be quite the bizarre sight for those without a knack for perceiving the supernatural. An injured girl was sluggishly and slowly making her way through the rain, leaning for support against seemingly nothing at all. It was pretty clear that she was barely hanging on to her consciousness, but she refused to take it easy.

“I need to get used to the body.” Kimiko muttered when you offered to carry her. In your shinigami form, you could easily do that. But you still don’t know how all of this ghost nonsense works, so you let her have it her way. At the very least, she’s in no state to ask anything about the body you put her in. That’s a good thing. You don’t know how you’d answer those questions.

Though, it slowed down travel to a crawl, making it tedious and tiring, especially once you returned to your real body. You probably shouldn’t have left it out in the rain, but... but you’re tough. A cold’s not going to keep you down.

You didn’t take the pipe, of course. You don’t need it anymore.

Returning to your family house took a while, but you don’t remember the road. Your whole body is numb, occasionally spiking up with pain. Your head feels like someone replaced your brain with a bowling ball. Kimiko probably feels the same.

You finally return home, immediately heading upstairs to the second floor. No one else is around, and the place would probably feel quite lonely to someone who cared. You’re really not in the mood for that right now.

You muster up some courage and take a closer look at the girl. The wound on her head looks intimidating, but it's actually not as dangerous as it seems. She’ll be fine.

>Head to the bathroom first. See if you can do something about the girl’s injuries.
>Go straight to your room. Throw Kimiko on the bed, and get out a futon for yourself. You’d probably do more harm than good if you tried playing doctor right now. You should rest.

You flip the bathroom’s lights on without thinking, and get blinded by the sudden flash of nauseating whiteness. You groan and drop a few swearwords; Kimiko hisses in irritation, trying to cover her eyes. You seat her on a stool, and look for a first aid kit in the mirror cabinet. It takes a while, even though it was right in front of you all along. It seems that you managed to doze off for a few seconds there, your squinted eyes not helping with keeping you awake.

You grab a bottle of disinfectant - you think that’s what this is, anyway - and pour some of it on a cloth. You don’t have the patience to be gentle, so you put a hand on the girl’s head, who still seems confused as to what is going on, and place it against the wound near her temple. She screams and tries to get away, but you keep her steady and finish the job.

At least you think that did it.

You turn and step away from her, throwing the cloth aside. You can feel a glare on your back, but not for long - Kimiko suddenly grasps her chest, hissing again.

“Your ribs are probably cracked.” You explain to her. She doesn’t respond to that, and neither does she ask anything about it. You wrap her head in bandages, and lend her your shoulder again.

The two of you take a brief walk to the room nearby, and you drop the girl on your bed. There is a muffled groan; must have dropped her too roughly. You stumble away from her like a drunk, regaining your balance by leaning on a wall for support. Rather than fetching the futon, you find yourself sliding down the wall, little by little.

And then you faint.

The sleep isn’t pleasant: it’s tense, delirious, and feverish. You recall constantly blinking in and out of consciousness, though you don’t know which of those times were dreams. Out of that awful experience, you have only two relatively firm memories, and even those are blurry and momentous. The first is seeing that girl watching over you, and the second is looking at an empty room without her.

You’re sure you had dreams. Nightmares. You don’t remember them, and you’re sure it’s better that way.

When you finally wake up, you don’t feel rested. You just feel less tired than before.

In your well-lit room you can see that the girl is still here, wearing nothing but the nightgown you found her in. She’s sitting down, leaning against the wall you passed out on, fiddling with a cellphone. There is a gray briefcase by her side; not one of your things. You shift in your bed and she looks your way, noticing that you’re awake.

“Did you sleep well?” The girl’s cute voice is disturbing to listen to. You avert your eyes towards the window. It’s dark outside, though the lights in your room are on. Late evening or very early morning, most likely.

>”...I feel like shit. How long was I out?”
>”...What’s with the briefcase? Don’t tell me you’re moving in here.”
>”You didn’t go outside, did you? No one else saw you, right?”

Whose body is she in?

I feel like our character definitely knows, so why don't we? Is it just unreliable narrator bullcrap?
>>
>>37549619
I'm pretty sure it's implied a dead body.AS in i think we went to the morgue[spoiler[
>>
>>37549639
We started the game with a pipe in our hand, the body had an injury on their head, and we were explicitly described as sickened when the body we dropped her in got back up. I'm pretty sure it's someone Clarissa knew and killed for some reason just before being attacked by the Hollow.

The girl smiles, stands up, and stretches.

“You must have caught a cold or something. You were out of it for two days.”

“A cold knocked me out for two days? Two days?!”

“Yeah. They say that foreigners don’t take well to Japanese colds.”

“You’re a real fuckin’ comedian. It’s... friday, right?”

“No, it’s technically saturday.”

“Shit... That means my dumb brother’s coming back from his stupid summer camp in the morning. Well, at least I woke up early enough to let you go away before he-... what is that briefcase for and where did you get it?”

“The briefcase is full of my stuff. I’ll be living here for a few days. I want you to take a look at some of the stuff in there, by the way. While you were out of it, I went and did some shopping... oh, and I picked up something for me to wear, too.” She lifts it up, placing it on your desk. Kimiko unlocks the case, opening it. The briefcase is filled to the brim with pretty summer dresses and comfy pajamas. Mostly pink.

“...So you really are moving in. How about I say no? How about asking me before deciding on something like that? How am I supposed to explain this to my brother? Why do you even need to do this? And you said you went out shopping? Are you fucking serious? You shouldn’t do shit like that while... while in that body!”

“Shh, shh. Don’t worry so much. I was really sneaky about it. And besides, your fridge had almost no food in it. I didn’t want to starve, so I had to go out. Anyway, look at this stuff here for a minute.” She picks up a dress. Underneath it was hidden a red glove with a skull drawn on it, what looks like a... candy dispenser toy with a bunny head at the top, and something that looks like a big... plastic stick with buttons on it.

...It all looks like junk. Kimiko is looking at it in awe, in adoration, even – especially at the bunny toy, for whatever reason.

It’s really not that cute.

(1/2)
>>
>>37550475
“...Are you going to explain this stuff to me, or are you going to keep staring at it?”

“Oh, right. Sorry,” She picks up the candy dispenser. “Say ‘ah’.”

“Fuck off.”

She keeps her smile, places the toy aside, and instead puts on the red glove. You don't have the patience for this crap.

“Look, I have more questions. We need to discuss this, because I still don’t understand a single fucking thing, and you are the only one who can-“

She then suddenly gives you a wide, mean slap across the face with her gloved hand.

You didn’t expect that. Your body of flesh drops down on the bed, motionless. There are lots of profanities you are tempted to scream out, but you are momentarily overwhelmed by the sudden, refreshing lightness of your new body.

“Alright, I’m going to make something clear. You owe me for your life, and I’m going to be collecting that debt. I got roughed up by that Hollow pretty badly, so I need some time to recover. For the time being, you are my substitute in the Shinigami duties. I mean, it only makes sense, since it’s your fault that I ended up in this predicament in the first place,” She takes the glove off, placing it back into the briefcase. “So, first things first, we’ll be going out on a patrol tonight!”

>”Shinigami? Hollow? Patrol? Explain this shit to me!”
>”My fault? What the hell do you mean by that?”
>”Fuck off. I already helped you out way more than I should have. I don’t owe you shit.”

To our character, who may have killed someone, the knowledge that killing someone or committing a "mortal sin" while alive results in a very real hell filled with a giant skewering to get you through the door might cause a freakout.

Though, given how violent Soul Society winds up being, I have to wonder about the purpose of Hell in canon.

Also, while we're an experienced fighter Killer, we aren't the UNLIMITED HYBRID COSMIC POWER LEVEL that Ichigo was.

So we're probably due for an extended Japanese Highschool Ghostbusters arc in which we deal with heavy tactics against the uniquely powered hollows.
>>
>>37550847
Does that mean...if Kimiko gets her powers back and leaves without getting caught...or we lose our powers because we get cut by a captain like Kuchiki cut Ichigo...we'll have an early fullbring arc?

She gives you the basic rundown: about how after dying, people don’t actually go to the afterlife, well, at least not immediately; about how there are monsters out there seeking to consume the spirit that remains after a person’s death, and how the Shinigami are those who protect the spirits and send them on their way to heaven, while also slaying the Hollows trying to keep that from happening.

You get all of that. This is groundbreaking stuff; you were just explained in extremely simple terms what happens after a person dies. The tools she’s been showing off help with the temporary extraction of a soul from the body, which, for you, is going to be absolutely vital in the near future, or so she says.

She’s starting to lose you once she begins delving into the spiritual balance of things, though. It feels like she’s making fun of you by using extremely complex terms. You interrupt her.

“So you just need me to kill those huge fuckers that pop up in town, and... and send ghosts to heaven? So I’m sort of like an angel fighting demons?”

“You really don’t seem like an angel to me. Not with a potty mouth like that.” She says, smiling.

“Hey, fuck you. And what was that about me ‘owing’ you something? I got you a body, I saved your damn... life? Is that the right term? And I cut up that monster real good. You saved my life, I saved yours, see, we’re pretty much as even as it gets.”

“But who will keep the town save if not you?”

“I’m no angel, you said it yourself. What made you think I even care about the people here, really? I’m a foreigner, you said it yourself, master comedian.”

“Well, you’re a human being, and those generally possess a certain amount of decency and compassion when it comes to other human beings!” She puts her hands together, forcing out an incredibly exaggerated, sugary smile.

“Look, I really don’t have time for this. School’s going to start in two days, so I can’t be spending the nights with you pretending to be Batman. You should find someone else.”

“But you’re the only one who can do this! It’s only for the week! Please, I actually can’t do anything without your help!” Kimiko manages to sound sarcastic and yet pleading at the same time during her chittering, somehow. You sigh, thinking her request over. “I’m not at 100% right now (I’d say I’m at 50%, get it?), and I’m just going to die if I try to fight a Hollow on my own, and it’ll take forever for them to get a replacement out here, meaning that the people will be completely defenseless and...”

“Shut up already. The way you keep flapping your mouth is annoying. I’m thinking it over.”

She obediently shuts up, waiting for your answer. Kimiko looks like a child begging her parents for a toy. You’d find it adorable if... if the circumstances were different.

>“...I’ve seen what those monsters – Hollows – can do, and... I don’t want to ever see it again. Alright. I promise that I’ll help you, Kimiko.”

You agree to help her. Not because she’s asking you to, and not because you want to do her a favor. Hollows are terrible monsters that should not exist in this world. If you can slash up at least a few of them with your sword, then you’ll do it.

“YES! Thank you!” Kimiko performs a fist pump. “You’re not that bad after all! Well, we shouldn’t waste time. Let’s head out right away.”

She hops up to her feet, taking out a cellphone.

“Hey, is... your body alright?”

“Hm? Oh, I healed it up right away. It’s perfectly inhabitable now.”

That’s a choice of words you just can’t be undisturbed by. You let it slide, but you don’t know how much longer your patience for things like that is going to last.

“So... there’s one thing in particular that we need to investigate tonight. It’s been all over the news, but you were out, so - a J-Pop Idol died yesterday in an accident, but I can’t find her soul.”

“An idol in Karakura? Well, I think I remember hearing something about that. I don’t really keep up on idols, though, so... you think one of those Hollows did it? Do they even kill humans, or do they only eat ghosts?”

“A poorly secured spotlight dropped on her head. I don’t actually know what the odds of that happening are, so I’m not going to jump to any conclusions yet. People are, in fact, often killed by Hollows, and people rarely have any choice but to view those cases as accidents. However, that does not mean that every accident has a Hollow behind it. Often times, people really do just get unlucky.”

“Who’s the idol?”

“Her idol name is Suzu-chan. I really can't remember her real name; well, it doesn't matter, I think. The mission for tonight will be to find her and send her to heaven.”

“...Hey, wait. What if she already got eaten?”

“In that case, we’ll need to kill the Hollow. However, if it’s the same one we fought before, then we’ll have to retreat.”

“I ain’t retreating. I almost kicked its ass last time, and only lost because you got in the way.”

“It’s not very strong, yes, but it’s abnormal. As banal as this may sound, it doesn’t die when killed. The masks on the Hollows’ heads are actually their weak point and they die instantly when those are breached, even though they’re more durable than the rest of their bodies. The back of the head is the least durable point of the mask. Are you with me so far?”

“Sure, I hear ya.”

“Fighting a Hollow directly is pants-on-head retarded. Did I make that clear enough for you? Sneak up on it, and then cut through the back of its mask with your Zanpakuto.”

“You have a fancy name for the swords, too?”

“Your sword is really nice, by the way. It looks better than mine.”

“...Thanks?”

“So, we’re heading out right now. Are you ready, uh..?”

“Clarissa.”

“I know. It’s just that I’m Japanese and that’s hard to pronounce. Is Clare acceptable? I like that way more, too!” She beams with a smile. Why does everything this girl say and do feel so... sarcastic? Or is this ironic?

The two of you set out. Kimiko wasn’t lying when she said that she can’t do anything on her own anymore. You’d probably manage to cover the whole town by now if you didn’t have to wait for her. Well, you know that it is necessary to have her around, since you don’t know exactly where and what to look for.

Kimiko teaches you a few tricks as you walk on. She explains to you how to stand on air and phase through walls. It’s harder than it should be - for a ghost, that is - but she explains that it’s something to do with a human’s mental barriers and the subconscious disbelief of being able to do things like this...

...Or something like that, yada yada, she’s overcomplicating her speech on purpose again, probably to piss you off, and it’s working. Basically, it’s not going to be terribly reliable when shit hits the fan. She also warned you against ‘flying’ too much - it’s a really good way to get exhausted as a spirit, and for you, who intends to fight Hollows, that’s a death sentence. She also provides a few more trivia bits about Hollows: they usually possess the intellect matching a simple animal, but the more souls they eat, the more cunning they get.

And Shinigami are some kind of delicacy. Basically, Hollows will smell you from a mile away and usually ditch whatever innocent spirit they were preying on in order to get you. Shinigami eventually learn how to keep themselves hidden better, but, in your case, just staying out of sight is enough. Just because they can smell you doesn’t mean they know where you are, only that you -are- there. A good Shinigami is never seen by a Hollow unless he wants to be seen, so the beasts usually lose their patience and go back to hunting the weak.

But, again, they wouldn't even know that a Shinigami is 'there' if he's actually worth his salt.

“So actually sneaking up on them is going to be a bitch?”

“No, no. You’re not strong enough for that to matter. Even if you were, they’d give up looking for you by now, and those too weak to kill you wouldn’t even try.”

“...’They’? How many of them are there?”

“Well, although it is unusual for a small town like this to have more than one active Hollow at a time, it’s not impossible. Though, they’d probably be way weaker than even the one we fought, if that happens. And they won’t have a trick as nasty as that one.”

“Do you name those things? I really don’t want to keep referring to that Hollow as ‘that’ Hollow.”

“I don’t name them. But someone else does, and he sends those names out to Shinigami.”

“So what’s that one’s name?”

“It got the designation of, uh... Clay Bone.”

“...Did you just make that up? It sounds pretty retarded.”

She shakes her head. You don’t have anything to add. Kimiko goes back to murmuring your name, trying to get a better hang at pronouncing it.

I think he meant ethnic half breed.

Her phone suddenly beeps.

“There’s an unidentified Hollow nearby, and it’s very-“

Kimiko’s words drown in the shriek of a mad beast.

“...It’s very close,” She finishes. ”Follow me!”

“Nah, I got it,” You tell her, air hopping up to a better vantage point, that being the rooftop of an apartment building. You can see the Hollow looking down from the roof of another building about 200 to 400 meters away from your current position. It resembles the mythological griffon in the form of its blue body, yet the beak is replaced by a dog’s skull, which also seems to be its mask. “I see it. It’s a big dog with wings. I got it from here.”

“I’ll get into a better position to support you, just in case!” Kimiko runs off. Looks like she trusts you enough to have a little freedom in how you’ll be engaging it.

>It looks like it’s getting ready to attack something. Charge in and dice the fucker into bits before it does.

I'm just waiting for OP to either update or end the thread. Would be sad if it ended now though.

You start running, jumping from rooftop to rooftop, rapidly approaching the beast. You are not going as quickly as you could be, and you are not taking the most direct path. Still, by human standards, it is a very impressive sight to behold, a young woman clad in black crossing the gaps between apartment buildings with single leaps.

The beast does not budge from its position, gazing down at the street below, quietly growling in starving anticipation. It does not notice you in its twisted reverie, so you tightly grip you the handle of your sword with both hands, feeling anxious and thrilled. When the distance between you and the beast can be crossed with a single one of your jumps, you move in, suppressing the urge to issue out a battlecry. You are not going to take any chances, not with your life and the life of innocents on the line. Since you decided to go with this plan, you’ll be going all the way, and you won’t let yourself half-ass it.

You perform a vertical swing, intending to cut the skull into two even halves. The sword bites into the mask, and the bone cracks under the impact. But it does not go further than that. You stomp your feet into the griffon’s back, and swing again, letting out a roar. Just one more and it’ll break for sure.

But it reacts before you lower your sword for the slash. It shrieks and flaps its wings, knocking you off-balance. You don’t fall, but it gets you off its back. You get ready. The Hollow crawls away, creating some space. From the crack in its white mask drips red blood. It is hesitant to attack again. You’re certain that it will, and you’re certain that you’ll get it in the upcoming exchange, but it is hesitant.

Its mask proved to be more durable than you thought it would be, even while striking from such an advantageous position. You must have missed the weak spot. However, two strikes will break even its tough bits, you're certain. You get ready, not charging first in order to not scare it away.

A ball of red light suddenly flies into its side, a grand fiery explosion concealing it under a cloud of smoke and flames. The beast takes to the skies, ripping open a gap in reality. It disappears within that portal, and the tear closes. It’s gotten away.

You look down from the rooftop, furious. That worthless attack only served to scare it away, and allowed it to live another day. You could have ended this right there and then, and yet...

...

As you watch, you doubt your eyes for a moment.

There are dozens of spirits out on the street below. Probably more than you’ve seen throughout your entire life, and all in one place, gathered into a crowd of over 50 people.

Their chains are separated from their bodies, meaning that their fates are sealed. Over 50 dead people, all on a single street.

You try to think optimistically at first. Just because they’re here does not mean that they all died in the vicinity. Perhaps something has lured them here; maybe it’s a trick that Hollow can perform?

But then you spot Kimiko. Her shocked expression seems to confirm your worst suspicions. She meets your eyes, calling you over with a gesture. You jump down, air-stepping to soften your fall.

“Sorry that I made it leave, but this... takes priority. This... this is a massacre. You need to fix this immediately. “
>>
>>37554668
That's problematic, but we just have to go up the power level chain and we'll be killing them in one swing.
>>
>>37554736
oh what the fuck killed so many people. and why do i have this sinking feeling.
>>
>>37554736
Damnit Kimiko. We'll never rank up if we don't have a single hollow kill under our belt. Unless some look like they could hollowfy at any moment, it could have waited just a little bit longer.
>>
>>37554736
So we start sending them off?
It's not like shinigami should mess with mortals

I'd like to end the thread for tonight, it's getting late for me.

Posting took an intimidating amount of time today, slowing down my already unimpressive posting speed even more. I can't do anything about these posting times, but I'll try to write faster in the future. Thanks for reading!

If you have any questions, please ask them, I'll be happy to answer!
>>
>>37554818
Thanks for the thread. See you next time!
>>
>>37554818
Will you have any rolls in this quest?
If we become hollow thanks to one thing or another would we lose?
>>
>>37554818
So what kind of sword do we have? Is it a normal katana or is it something else? If it isn't determined yet might i suggest a Shashka?
>>
>>37554818
well posting speed aside was a good thread. any clue on what our future power might be?
>>
>>37554818
Thanks for running.
So will the Captains and such be different from cannon?
>>
>>37554859
Damn...2min 30sec to post that....
>>
>>37554923
yeah posting speed seems to have dropped massively across the board for some reason.
>>
>>37554869
>Will you have any rolls in this quest?
Most likely not, except for maybe split votes, like the one we almost had today? Probably nothing that affects the plot, though. I'll be leaving that entirely up to you guys.
>If we become hollow thanks to one thing or another would we lose?
You lose when you die.

>>37554873
Clarissa is currently as ordinary as any other Shinigami recruit, or maybe an unseated Shinigami.
Her sword is a normal katana, but one of exquisite craftsmanship when compared to Kimiko's, but it's largely a cosmetic difference.

>>37554882
>any clue on what our future power might be?
Of course!

>>37554893
>So will the Captains and such be different from cannon?
There is only one difference from the set of captains in the canon and in this quest.

I'll make an announcement on twitter when the next thread is about to happen. It's a really handy thing that lets me do that.

Again, thank you for reading!

>You lose when you die.
Might depend on what kills us, we might become a full time nofungami
>>
>>37555176
Well, unless exposed to very specific experimental processes, while we have Shinigami powers we CAN't become a hollow. After they go back to Kimiko, and we die, then we can hollow.

On her sword though. It's described as more well crafted looking? A Zanpakuto shapes itself based on the soul it's tied to. So if we made her sword look more well crafted, we might be possessed of better spiritual control or something else nice.
