The sun is high overhead.
Your family has dispersed, hunting, studying, training.

You, and your friends have not dispersed.
In fact, you have not moved at all.

Still buried in blankets and monsters, and not entirely conscious, you are currently drooling all over yourself. Your friends are in similar states of disarray:
Lann has kicked her way free of her blankets, lying flat on the nest floor like some unfortunate murder victim.
Sheszka has rolled over beneath your legs, pawing and kicking skyward as she dreams, her tail drumming against your shell insistently.

Nin keeps giggling. You're fairly certain she plots in her sleep.

Jin, at least, is not a messy sleeper. She is, however, someone who goes all out in their sleeping, so the chances of her waking up sometime before dinner are essentially null.
And Esmerelda, the newest addition to the sleeping pile, has unraveled herself from your neck, lying halfway across your shoulders, her tail trailing onto your chest.

This is good. Life is good.
Getting up is no.
No, no, no.

Today is a Lazy day.
It absolutely deserves the capital letter.

Also I am very curious as to what Lann's report will look like and how the guild will react to it. Perhaps we could bring our spider family along for a dinner at the tavern when Lann writes it up?

Training your friends has obliterated the competition.

Training yourself and studying have tied for third, with working on your skills a confident second place.

We'll figure something out.

No no Mothia still runs, they just started putting up jobs they needed done that didn't want to do them selves, and I decided to go full force and make adventuring parties, one of which is plotting to overthrow them! Having another group take the Mothia jobs sounds like a fantastic idea though.

Dr. Love serenaded the Butterfly one night at her window, and was promptly arrested for trespassing.

Nye the fluffy Moth managed to Evolve again from spending time with his fluffy kids. By which I mean desperately trying to keep up as they hunted or getting his ass handed to him when the want to "Play" Wrestle.

Aside from that The Mothia have found the Hobgoblins base and are planning an assault. And the Chief of Police is one more Moth related incident from dropping everything and fucking off somewhere

Days pass.

Eventually, you even get out of bed.

Alright, fine. You aren't that bad.
You're up and running by the next day.

Specifically, you're up and running when, one morning, it dawns on you:
No, not the sun.

The fact that you're starting to look more and more like a teenager. An older teenager. You'd be hesitant to call anyone near sixteen an adult, though they'd undoubtedly want you to.

How much longer will you stay in the woods?
Mom would likely run you down if you tried to leave now. And you don't really feel 'adult', to be honest.

Back to the first thought: You're getting older. And planning to leave the forest, nevermind the nest.
And while you can likely punch through steel, not all of your friends are quite so... physically endowed.
And that means that they need training.

You take it upon yourself, rallying your rag-tag group of varyingly lazy monsters, and your ready yourself to put them through the ringer.

Your first attempt probably could have gone better.
As it turns out, everyone is differently able. In a very distinct and not workable together for training sort of way.
>>
>>37552464
Sheszka and Nin take to it well enough, having already worked together with you for training before.
Jin is...
Well, Jin is very, very lazy. And also the sort of creature that flies, rather than picks fights with swords and the like.

You set her to working on fly-bys and the like, but she's already excellent at hitting stationary targets.
It's not really cutting it.

Esmerelda- Well, you have no idea what to do with her. In the end, you try getting her to lift things, just to judge where her strength is.
Somewhere between 'small dog' and 'adorable reptile' apparently. Which is to say that she isn't very strong at all.

In the end, you turn to your mother for help.
A training regimen is constructed.
It's even followed, being enforced by a maniacal horned spider, cackling all the while as she drives you and your friends to exhaustion.
Overall, not your finest moment.

On the plus side, Jin can hit speedy targets with her attacks no problem, and Ezzy's reflexes have come along to the point where she can dodge weapons, and bite the hand wielding them before they retract.
Still tiny, though.

You are currently a half-elven archer, sitting in the adventurers guild in Oakring, facing down your immediate superior as well as his superior as they go over your report- They are currently in the middle of judging whether or not the trip was a waste of time, apparently.

"By one Lann- Did you forget your name? There are people here that can help you spell if you-"
"I can spell fine, thank you. I don't use my last name."
"Suit yourself."
"Mm."

The older man, already seated, coughs, causing you both to turn to him.
"Spelling and names aside- It is the, ah, contents that are of interest."
Your eyes (all two. And thank-you, Lyra, now you can't stop thinking about them like that. Bloody-) flick between the two men.
"Which piece of the contents?"

"Ah. All of it?"
"Pardon?"
"Nearly everything you've brought back is either undiscovered, or goes against what we know."
"What we thought we knew."

"As it may be. Lets start with- Ah. The reason for the trip. The Hydra?"
"What about it?"
"You claim that you participated in a fight against a massive, multi-headed creature, with poison for blood. And that the only injury resulting was one werebeast being poisoned."
"Yes?"

Dammit, Lyra.

"The arachne girl is... 2 months old? How am I supposed to believe this?"
You look to your boss for help.
And he has now fixed a very glassy eyed stare on the wall opposite him.
Bastard.

"With all due respect sir- Any number of adventurers or villagers could attest to the girl's strength."
"How, exactly?"
"Ah- There was a crab-"
"A crab? Small, waterborn. Claws. How would-"

"It was a giant crab. Bigger than a house. She killed it, then people helped her cart it into town, and the whole village ate it that evening."
>>
>>37553348
Moot retired and stole all the copper wiring in the walls when he left the building.
>>
>>37553414
There's a moment of silence, a man struggling mightily to wrap his head around words in the air. He looks like a fish, you think. Eyes bulging, trying to find someone else to throw him back into the water. He turns to your boss, raising an eyebrow.

"Jaks?"
"Uh. That bit has been verified, sir. The spinner was most certainly involved in killing the crab."
"Involved?"
"The, ah. The harpy and the werebeast were there as well."
"I- I see."

Pages are flipped in silence as he leafs forwards through your report.

"It says that, while seeking a healer, you met a Wendigo?"
Is he just gonna pretend all that didn't happen?
You almost wish Lyra was here now. Probably smile and put another hole in the floor. Or ride around town on a wave of stone.
The spider is weird.

"We were looking for a wendigo, sir."
"Why?"
"They are, apparently, the forest's healers."
"A wendigo healer?"
"All wendigo are healers, from what I've learned. The reason we don't see any is because they dislike leaving the forest."

"By all records, wendigo are flesh eaters and monsters."
"Do we have any actual sightings, though? Or just dead bodies, and people blaming wendigo? The piece of forest they lived in was nearly a week upstream, past a waterfall."
"We'll add it to our notes then."

It is unbearably difficult to not roll your eyes.

"In any case, we'll set that aside, as well as the details of moth dust and the whole... giant bear story-"
Your life for venomous elven fangs.
The spider's laughter be damned, if you could bite people until they would shut up now-
"-there is the matter of the lamia."

Not really where you thought he would take objection.
"What matter with the lamia?"
>>
>>37553430
Smart man.
>>
>>37553488
He shakes his head.
"It's absurd. Tiny snake people? Ridiculous."

You stare. There isn't anything else to do. What the hell does he want from you? You wrote the report.
"Giants with bones on the outside or people who are half giant spider are okay, but a regular sized snake with a person instead of a head are too far?"

Your boss is turning red, swallowing as hard as he can.
You have to admit, you're impressed. That is some serious self control. You'd probably have laughed at this point.

"The matter is final, Miss... Lann. We will not pay for this."
You narrow your eyes.
This bloody-

Wait.
Wait.
Ha. Aha!

"There's a festival coming up, isn't there?"
"I beg your pardon? What does that have to do with-"
"The spider's a kid. There's no way she'd miss it, yeah? And she'll bring the snake."

They're at least waiting for you to finish. That's something.
"So, when they show up, I'll have my proof, right?"
"I- I suppose..."
"Then put off the judgement till then. Not getting paid for the trip is fine, but not getting paid for writing all that is, well. I'm an archer, not an author."
"Indeed. We shall see, then."

Oh, you'll see alright. Your fishy stupid eyes'll pop right out of your head, yes.

Dammit. You have spent way too much time around spiders.

I'll take the first digit of triple rolls into account.

While your friends training is drilled into them, you opt to expand your horizons!
Mostly, you try expanding horizons.
In the literal sense.

Pushing yourself to your limits- in terms of magic, anyway- is not particularly fun, but it does seem to help.
Every headache makes itself worthwhile as you go further and further without keeling over from exhaustion.

The lack of advil isn't something you're pleased by, but who knows if that'd work anyway?

After a rather head-splitting session of lighting your hands (and other things) on fire, you crawl back into the nest proper, and pass out in a not at all small pile of blankets.

You wake up an indeterminate amount of time later- you aren't quite sure where you are, now.
There's still blankets, but your head is lying on something softer.

There's a cool piece of cloth lying across your forehead- and upper eyes, but honestly, the darkness is helping.
Even better: Your headache isn't nearly as pounding. There's still a light twinge in time with your heartbeat, but nothing like the throbbing hatred that was your trip home.

A delicate hand traces your neck, combing your hair back and away, and you crack an eye.

You're lying in Nin's lap- an immediately apparent situation, as noone else shares her colouration. Or her poofy fur. You tilt your head, looking up past the glare of the sun, at the little moth.

"Good morning, Lyra."
You squint a little against the light.
"I do not think it is morning, yes."
"Morning is whenever one wakes."
"Do not tell Jin that, please."

She giggles, her hands never stopping, brushing your hair out in slow strokes.
"Then perhaps the day starts and ends with the will of the Queen."
"Ridiculous."

The cloth smells, ever so faintly. Like Nin's wings. Like...
"Healing dust?"
"A little water and dust."

You go quiet. Getting up would take too much effort, yes. You can just lie like this. It's fine.
>>
>>37554045
The server now automatically checks your privilege before the post becomes visible.
>>
>>37554774
"Thank you, yes."
Nin looks away, her hands in your hair, framing your face.

"You work too hard."
"Hmn?"
"You work too hard. You don't need to push all the time."
"But what about-"

"No. Everyone is trying to be stronger. For you."
You watch her, unmoving. She tilts her head to one side, smirking.
"Or themselves."
"Mmm. Watching Ezzy train is... fun, yes."
"Don't let her hear you. She'll bite you."

You both laugh a little, almost echoing in the empty nest.
"I will take my leave then, yes."
"And where are you going now, my lady?"
"Back to sleep, little moth."

She smiles down at you, and you let your eyes slide closed, settling back down into rest.
You can feel her hands in your hair until sleep claims you.

Summer grows hotter, and doesn't stop.
Humid heat.
Sticky heat.

You barely bother warming the bath anymore.

The only one unaffected is your resident tiny snake.

"Do you not sweat?"
"Our blood is cool. Weather like this is just nice for us."
"You are very, very lucky, yes."
"I think I would rather be warm all the time."

You shrug.

And then Mom shows up.
Wearing a dress. And a wide brimmed hat.

You stare.

"Are you going to get up, little one?"
"I was mostly planning to lie still until the heat passed, yes."
"Too bad. You will miss the festival, then."

The little snake uncurls from your neck, rising through your hair to look at your mother.
"A festival?"
"Mhm. The village's midsummer festival, yes."

Ezzy tugs your ear. Your entire body twinges.

"Lyra- Lyra, we have to go. It's a Festival. And that means there is food, and games, and-"
Sometimes, it is easy to forget that she is older than you.

You peel yourself from the floor, and buzz around the nest, locating and collecting your friends. Jin is back home, of course.
And Sheszka, being partially covered in fur, has taken to cooling the bottom pool and simply floating in it.
The poor thing almost whimpers when you pull her out.

She cheers up a bit when you promise food and fun.
You just hope the village knows what's coming.

Nin is hanging in the uppermost branches of the tree, trying to eke out what wind exists to cool off.

You assemble your troops before Mom, who turns you over to the evening's sergeant.
Elle, specifically.

A half hour later, you are all dressed in perfectly fitted dresses.
Yes, even Ezzy.
The snake isn't quite sure what to make of her tiny sundress, while Nin is trying to show off the low cut back of her own. She tries to compliment Elle on her adult taste, and draws a blank look from the weaving spider.

"It is for your wings, yes?"

You get a good laugh from it, at least.
Sheszka, luckily enough, gets a fan with hers.
>>
>>37556303
>>37556262
And that's the story of why we're not allowed to buy coffee/tea/chocolate/whatever any more.
Depending on how much you need to fuck us up.
>>
>>37556337

A rather floppy set of hats completes the ensemble, and off you go.

Your siblings and father meet you at the base of the tree, and you set off through the woods as the sun starts to fall.

___________________________________________

The village comes into view as you trundle down the hill, loaded in monsters and dressed to the nines.
A pair of guards on duty- and lightly intoxicated, it seems- stare brokenly as you all walk up.

To be fair, there's more than a half dozen arachne.

"Uh- ah- N-names and reason?"
"Reason?"
"F-for visiting the village, m-miss."

Mom smiles.
"How kind, yes. I am Nialla- This is my husband Erics, and my children- Lyra, Aria, Elle, Sara, Zach and Ephram."
You step next to her.
"The moth is Nin, The wolf is Sheszka, and the snake is Esmerelda, yes."

"Wolf, moth, and- What snake, miss?"
"Lamia! I am a lamia!"
The guard stares at the tiny snake wrapped around your neck like a scarf for a full minute, then pours out the rest of his drink onto the ground.

"Here for the festival, right?"
"Yes, yes."
"Alright, head on in then."
"Thank you, yes." "Thanks!" "Have a good festival, yes." "Lamia!"

It does not take long to find Jin and her family.
Or Jin, at least.

The harpy swoops in to land on your butt moments after you arrive, settling her feathers in the most contented fashion you've seen.
It is her sort of festival, you suppose.

Bonfires are lit everywhere, lighting the night with towering flames.
People are dancing and drinking everywhere you look, while the children run screaming about with candy held high over their heads.

Sefi swoops in to land on a nearby fence as Jared and Lia walk out into the street before you, waving greetings with a wide smile.
"Good evening!"
"The whole brood, Nia?"
"My very own army, yes."

Nin giggles.
"Don't let the guard hear that, hah! The poor things were in a panic when you brought them all!"
Your mother shrugs.
"I was not going to leave them behind, yes. Well-"
>>
>>37556337
>tiny snake dress
fucking great.

Let's wear our sunhat.
>>
>>37556372
She turns.
"-I am now. You go and have fun, yes? And no drinking."
There's a chorus of immediate complaints.
"Alcohol, whelplings. And if you don't know, then ask."

Your siblings skitter in every direction, chasing scents or sounds or possibly someone's pets.
You hope your brothers don't eat anything they're not supposed to.

You wander off the in the direction of the biggest fire, cheered on by your resident buttharpy.
A massive bonfire, with dancing all around, greets you at the edge of river.

And then a thin hand claps down on your shoulder.
"Lyra!"

You turn, and are greeted by the strangest thing you've seen yet:
Lann, clearly giddy to see you, wearing an absolutely feral smile.
"Lann?"
"Having fun?"
"We just got here, yes."
"Yeah, I heard the screaming. Did you bring your little friend?"

"All of my friends are little, yes? You too."
"The Lamia, yes?"
"I am not little!"

"No, you absolutely are."
"I didn't say it. Anyway, can I borrow you? There's someone I need to terrorize into paying me."
"That seems illegal, yes."
"Nah, it's for the report. Of all the bloody crap I went through, he refuses to believe in the existence of Lamia."

You blink, smiling.
"Giant spiders are fine, then?"
"That's what I bloody well said!"

You follow the halfbreed through the crowd, closing in on a group of drinking adventurers- They've already abandoned any semblance of dancing, bringing the tables from the guild and setting up on the riverbank.

You're greeted by a toast, cheering, and requests for stories. And offers of tankards, which you have to turn down. You remember hat happened last time.
Or rather, you don't.
>>
>>37556403

"Over here, spiderbutt."
"Right away, elfbutt."
"That isn't a thing."
"Is that your human half, then? I'm sorry, I didn't know, yes."

Nin cackles as Lann sighs again.
See? You are appreiated.

"Hey! Boss!"
"Miss Lann?"
"Here's your proof."
"Your proof is a young woman in a sundress?"

Lann turns. And looks you up and down.
"Why are you wearing a sundress?"
"It is a festival, yes? Even Ezzy is wearing a dress?"

Lann leans in, squinting at your neck.
"Wear in the name of any god did you find dresses?"
"Elle made them, yes?"
Lann tugs at the hem, running her fingers over the lace edges.

"Damn. I gotta save up some money."
"You could just ask, yes. She'd make you model for all sorts of things, but she is always looking for someone new to dress up."
"I'll consider it."

"Excuse me."
You both turn.
"May I ask what you have to do with Miss Lann's report, Miss...?"

You offer your hand.
"Lyra Niallasdottir, yes. I am the arachne she travelled with."
The man's gaze travels up your face, noting your six eyes, and down to your armoured hands, finally settling on the razor sharp legs protruding from beneath your dress.

He takes your hand, though his own shakes a little.
"Ah, Nice to meet you, Miss Niallasdottir."
"Just Lyra is fine, yes."
"Uh. Y-yes. Miss Lann felt you would be able to prove her, ah, report."
>>
>>37556432
"Mhm?"
"Specifically, the existence of tiny snake people-"
"LAMIA! AND I AM NOT TINY!"

Everyone is suddenly very interested in your neck, where an irate, tiny snake girl is swing her fists angrily in the air.
The 'boss' just stares.
"Do not mind her, yes? It is probably past her bed time."
"I am not a child!"

She says, as she tugs on your hair. Hah.
Other adventurers share your opinion, as they opt straight for the spit take, beer spilling everywhere while people laugh.

"I- ah. I see."
He still hasn't taken his eyes from Ezzy's form, curling and uncurling around your neck in frustration.
You can feel the hiss.

"And the bear and hydra?"
"Which bear?"
"The- The giant one."
"Ah. From the circle. Yes. What about them?"
"They were real?"
"Oh, yes. I kept the hydra skull."

He tilts his head, looking behind you.
"Are you- wearing it?"
"No, no. This came when I grew, yes."
"I see. It was nice to meet you. I think I will go sit down."
"Have a good night, yes!"
"HssssssssssSssssss-"

Lann is cackling.
You'd probably mind more if you didn't find the whole situation quite so funny.
