You hive grows, you can feel it not just in the numbers but it is expanding, you can only bu wonder how much more you can expand before you starve, it just not leaving your mind. It seems no matter what nutrients just stay low. You are managing day to day but surviving is not living, its a struggle, and ultimately one that cannot be won, much more of this and your numbers will plummet. Natural selection at work, the environment has changed you, things are different and you have had to make some hard choices. This planet must have a varied flora and fauna, you just have not had the time or the resources to explore far enough to encounter them, otherwise you would be much better stocked. That must change.

At the moment you have 3 thinkers, this is splendid, and research on the algae has come to fruition, it is slightly dangerous, a low level toxin is present however, using it as food source is not possible in its current state. You would have to modify it so as produce a version that has no toxin, otherwise you could expect a percentage of your Brood to die every single cycle. And this is undesirable, specially if your would like to expand your numbers. It could be farmed in its current composition, but you need a source water and some colonies of cyanobacteria.
>>
>>37556573

It seems this algae contains both, prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells, its fascinating. However, its colonies of prokaryotic cells did not survive the trip to the low temperatures outside. A light source is also required for the construction of a farm, you cannot estimate how many will die if you harvest the algae in its current composition, but a farm producing about two hundred nutrients per day would require at least eight workers if you are to weed out the higher toxicity crops and keep deaths to zero.

Possible research:
>Modify algae for zero toxicity(decreases number of workers per farm.)(5 days)
>Research local fruits and nuts for highest value in nutrients(2 days)
>Research local animals for adaptations(specimens required.)

You organize your drones in the most effective arrangements you can think of, then you realize that at least one worker must stay with the thinkers to help them research and investigate. This changes some things, but not enough that you should worry. For the moment you have decided to send your miner away on a mission to find some amount of ore, with good luck they will find something that can be later refined into usable metals for your other drones.

The hunting part encounters the first obstacle of the day, it seems that it snowed in and the cave's entrance was blocked by the snow. It took your workers the better part of two hours to dig a path out, but at last that is done. Looking around you send the Winged Winter Workers (WIII) to scout from high up, they see that the river continues for quite a while before meandering towards a lake. Its a good place to look for sustenance, and to the east there is even more forest, but a bit greener, you wish you had added infrared to detect the temperate but it will likely be more temperate due to the canopy, its likely you will find food there.

The thinkers get hard at work trying to identify what are the best edibles around, they require some time for this, but with three working at the time they could come up to a serendipitous moment any second now, or they could get stuck tracing the lines of an almond for hours. You just never know what they will try, but you are confident they will find the best solution to any problem you given them, they just love puzzles. “WE work for mother! And SISTER” The miners report nothing of worth, but continue on their surveys.

Have the winged workers keep scouting in the air. One towards the forest and another towards the lake. Split the forces in half so 2 soldiers and 5 workers go to the lake and 1 soldier and 6 workers go to the forest. The lake is more likely to have a fight so it will need the two solders while the forest is more likely to have forage. Keep one worker slightly ahead of the rest in case of ambushes. Converge on prey quickly as a team if found.

Deciding to split the party you send both out in different directions, one towards the forest and the other towards the lake. This maximizes the chances of finding a good source of sustenance. The temperate has dropped, but its still manageable by your winterized forces. The party heading to the forest quickly finds tracks that lead them to believe there are large animals, probably good game nearby. The tracks are fresh, and you are sure they are not those of the shrieking beasts. With a good sense of certainty to push forward you urge to find the animal that made the tracks, it takes some time but at a clearing not too far you spot it, and its not too hard to do so, the colors displayed across its skin/fur are mesmerizing. You have no idea what to make out of it.

The party at the late has also met with a good amount of success. Once arriving you noticed several mounds of crusted sand and gravel with patches of foliage growing. Huts, intelligent life, marvelous, you could use this. Upon closer inspection thought you find that the mounds where not huts, but instead some sort of large land / perhaps amphibious crustacean. Their exoskeleton no doubt has adaptations to the cold, adaptations you could benefit from. But at the moment you are more preoccupied with food, and these animals seem to be feeding on the remains of animals washed to the lake by the river.

The forest animals does not know what hit him, you had your workers and single warrior wait. Patience paid off as it approached your warrior with a display of colors akin to electromagnetic show some planets have in the night sky. With a quick jab your warrior kills the beast in a single fluid movement, you just cannot believe it was this easy. He quite literally walked up the slaughter, perhaps this species would make a good domesticated animal. You can see yourself having a ranch of them, small clearings of forest dedicated to growing the walking nutrient bags.

>300N gained.

Back at the lake your workers approach with care and take bits of carrion, little by little as your warriors stand to attention in case anything goes wrong. But aside from one of your workers being mistaken for carrion, nearly eaten, and successfully escaping nothing went sour. You managed to take a large quantity of the food away from three of the crustaceans. It was easy, almost too easy, when you compare food amounts you realize that while a victory this carrion does offer little. A meager 150N all in all. You could try and gather more corpses from the placid beasts, but doing so may upset the ones that got robbed.

For now all things are going well, it would be best to have more scouts they have served quite well, you would not have found this lake and this forest, at least not this easily without them. Now you have the food being brought to the hive. With a scout looking for trouble ahead this becomes an easy task, the workers have little to worry other than carrying the food. They have a strong guard and over-watch, they will arrive at the hive within the hour, if only because of how much they are carrying at the moment, thus they can only move so fast.

The units at the lake you order them to join up with their brothers, one warrior and three workers start making their way towards the dense forest. But this is a way's off, and would take some time to get there. Halfway on the trail, your hear it, the bellowing cry of a beast, it builds up from a low grumble to a colossal collapse of sound like an explosion. It is quite intriguing, and fate presents an opportunity here.

You send your single scout ahead with two worker drones approaching from the ground, your scout works hard to make out the source of the sounds, but its deeply hidden by foliage surrounding the lake. Your drones locate the sound but you would rather not move them closer unless you have to, perhaps having your scout move in from above would be the best route. You could recall the other scout, for reinforcements. While you ponder this one the thinkers speaks “We found thing!” You turn your attention to them, it seems there is cluster of genes that could speed up the algae research, it could be the break you need.

Ok i will roll on my side just don't cry when good 70 rolls are not enough to defeat the common cold.

-------------------------------------------------------------

Your little brains work hard to follow the leads that the gene cluster provides, and they quickly start going over some serious mathematics and expression language that is beyond your (comparatively) slow processing speed, your mind just cannot keep up with them. While you do understand the underlying concept they are pursuing, but the actual details are lost in translation. “We found it!, WE found IT!” They chant for a few seconds, holding the answer like a child wishing to be praised, you could just get it, but with a nod of approval and a psyonic pat on a (figurative) head they all burst at once, trying to explain their findings.

It takes some time, to understand what they are saying and in the meanwhile you are sending a second scout to act as reinforcement. The soldier and workers are unloading the nutrients and the sentries are being replace for the day, night is quickly approaching. Temperatures are already dropping, but you have done very well for the day, and for at least two more day you will not starve.

You send in the scouts, they have not failed you yet, and what you witness takes a moment to register. You can clearly see the lines of muscle rippling all over the body, this creature is built for short bursts of massive speed and incredibly feats of strength. Its small eyes and large nasal appendage leads you to believe that it is primarily tracking by oldfactory cues. It responds violently at your intrusion, but your drones are far too high for it to attack. Had you used your ground drones, going in blind like that, you are quite sure it would have been a much different outcome. It could be possible to take down he creature, it seems like it was just feeding, perhaps it is currently weak. There is just one of it, and there are 3 worker drones, two winged drones, and a soldier nearby. You could try and take it down.

I would have just reminded everyone the way you take these kind of things down is by tiring them out. Unfortunately we don't have the time to spare to chase it at a distance for two days, and we don't have the advanced senses to keep track of it. Personally I think we're going to be destroyed by the thing. I hope it doesn't follow our trail back to the cave.

The drones sweep in and out of its attack range distracting the blood stained beast, this is long enough to have your workers jump at it and start stabbing it, it rolls around on the dirt in an attempt to shake its new passengers loose, but this merely aggravates its injuries. The beast trashes around, making that rumbling sound and then releasing it with an explosive force when your soldier stabs the creature thru its open mouth. This silences and kills the beast in one go, the night is here the temperature sare now rapidly declining, its snowing.

Wow, that was easy. We have enough food to work with, we just need to hunt when day breaks and we should have enough to last until a farm is complete. Might be interesting to get some research through on this thing.

do the math, we got two days until we run out of food. IF we do not increase hive size. The Farms will probably just keep death at bay.

>[]Algae production 200N per day 4 workers required.(2 days to build, half that with double the workers)

So in two days you can have a farm but it wont produce for another two days. you can use all workers you got to build it next quest in half a day, but you will only have a day of food left. and two days until it makes food.

Either way we are still in bad shape. we just did not lose any drones today. Or meet any KEEKS.

Summary 450 N gained today!!!
