The hive grows yet again but at least starvation is not a truly immediate threat this morning, most constructions have finished, and you can finally relax for a few minutes while you gather your thoughts. At the moment the hive can survive for one more day without having to go out for food, by then you will have a farm built, it will take at least another day for it to produce nutrients, it should be hard for your hive to find enough food to last an extra day.

Your miners are still looking for ore, this location in a ravine near mountains should have more than enough ore, but so far your miners have come up empty. That is troubling, you could send them elsewhere but there are only so many places to look for ore. Perhaps near the river where the sediment may have gathered. Or by the lake, the forest is not a location you think could be rich, but you never know.

Your thinkers are currently hard at work trying to uncover the secrets of photosynthesis that the algae samples are so well adapted for, this could be of great help to the hive but it will take some time until they crack the secrets locked away. To mentally pat them for their good and tireless work. “We LERN for MOTHER!” You absolutely love their antics, and have placed your utmost confidence in their ability to carry the hive forward.

Just gonna wait on a few more votes if that is ok.
Also a new dice system is being implemented for the quest check the pastebin but for the lazy anons out there:

There are two types of dice used in HiveQueen Quest.
(I borrowed Xenocide's quest idea and expanded on it a bit.)
(check that quest out its great!)

Combat
Rolls are on a 1d10
Only the first three rolls count

broken down:
0 Successes: Severe Failure
1 Success: Failure
2 Successes: Success
3 Successes: Great Success

1-4 is failure
5-10 is success

Normal rolls.
rolls are on a 1d100
only the first three rolls count.

Crits supersede all, so:
1, 78, 99 Its a crit bad roll
100, 2 ,2 its crit good roll.

1, 34, 100 its a tie, a 1d2 coin will be used. (heads and tails)
1-heads
2-tails

2/3 to resolve the roll.

1 is a crit fail (death is a rest for the lucky ones!)
2-7 are fails which win out against anything less than 90
8-20 are bad rolls, something bad will happen. (very bad)
21-50 are low rolls, you won't have any success (bad stuff)
51-79 are medium rolls you have some success (good stuff)
80-89 are high rolls, something good will happen (very good!)
90-99 are great rolls, something good and unexpected might happen
100 is a crit

You decide its best albeit slow to have your miners head to the forest, it could prove a valuable location full of resources. They will take about two days to get there and start prospecting. The forest was kind yesterday you hope that forging ahead it will be a source of much abundance and the stepping stone for your success as a queen.

It would be best if you had a general idea of how the land is laid out, and while yesterday you used your scouts extensively, you never actually had them do any sort of mapping, and this has hindered your ability to see beyond the meager location you have. So you order them to make a survey of the local lands and report back anything interesting. They leave the cave and fly off into the distance, not wanting to incur into peril and wisely covering more area they split up and go into separate directions.

Your current hive lacks many amenities and security features, so its time to get that corrected. Drones start moving about to place various doors and create chokepoints, this will protect from wild life and any other incursion. The doors lack any metal and will not protect from high velocity impact, but they are durable enough that they would hold and become obstacles to be overcome. However, vigilance is key to properly defending a hive so workers are moved to building a proper set of sentry outposts.

Foraging seems to be the best option on the table, you have all your free workers (9) go out to the forest and see what they can find. A few hours into the trip they have gathered 90 nutrients worth of local edibles, no animals so far, but it was to be expected. At least your warriors which stayed behind have not needed to sortie.

part (2/2):

Then for a moment you sense something with one of your scouts, and its gone, the scout does not respond, you have lost your connection to it. It as there for a second and the next it was gone. It happened a few ways away from the cave, about four kilometers out, above a swatch of white snow.

Wishing to exercise caution the winter soldiers are sent out, they are not numerous but they are capable troops, you have confidence in their abilities, however, even at their speed it takes them an hour to move thru the dense forest and reach the general area where your scout simply disappeared from your control. Your workers are nearby and could help the warriors, the area does not contain any trace of the scout so far. You must make a decision here, to either the investigate the matter further or to simply let it be, there is a nagging voice saying you ought to know, but can you really afford to use your time like this?

>[]Have the other scout investigate from above

Its hard, but you must forge ahead even with some losses, it will bug at you not knowing but its ok. You have the workers forage some more, this time with the escort of your warriors, no need to place them in danger, you are still unsure what lurks in the forest. For the time being your workers happily gather more nutrients from their surroundings, a fruit here, a bush picked clean there, some manner of small critters, nothing in quantities you could breed but perhaps make traps for. The sun is slowly descending and the temperatures are dropping in proportion, the day is not yet over but in about five hours or so it will be.

50N gained + 60N currently carried by workers:
Workers have: 110N on them.

>>
>>37602825

Your scout is tasked with searching for dangers, on his current location he finds plains full of animals, they all seem to be eating some sort of fungal growth, upon closer impaction, the plains are entirely composed of this bright green fungus, its strange, but the cycle of nutrients its there. The beasts excrete over the fields, the fungus processes this with the help of a intricate system of roots. They are all interconnected. Whenever something dies above, it gets recycled, spores are plentiful whenever your scout takes a step. But the nearby beasts are not threatened by its presence, they could be of great use to the hive, getting there by ground will take some time though its nearly 30 kilometers away from the cave. You could retask your miners to head there and make a large tunnel, this could take several days.

part (1/2)
>>
>>37603359
part (2/2)

The party of workers bringing back the nutrients stops for a second as your warriors detect movement nearby, a shrilling sound pierces the silence that had been building up for a few minutes, You had thought nothing of it until now, but the sound is recognized with some trepidation. “KEEK, KEEK” your warriors are at the ready expecting a the attack to come from whence the sound came. A fatal mistake three of your worker drones are gone in the space of a few seconds, carried off into the forest, their vitals weak a moment later gone.

A lone beast slowly gathers near a clearing taunting your warriors to come out. In anger you lash for them to destroy this creature. Something you now regret, the moment your warriors took a few steps two beasts came at them from the sides, impaling two of your powerful soldiers as if their armor where for naught. Your standing soldier turned to help its brother only to be stabbed from behind its endothermic glands ruptured, it fell to the dirt unable to move trashing about as its system tried to cope with the shock.

Your other warriors are quickly and gruesomely executed, with an almost machine-like efficiency, practiced and well planned moves used to sever their heads and pierce their endothermic glands. They too trashed about, a parody of life as they no longer where connected to you. Your remaining workers dropped all the food and huddled together, as far as you have counted there are six of the deadly creatures nearby.

6 winter workers left.
What will you do:

>[]send the scout to help[too far away to get there on time]
>[]send the first born clutch(weakened and not likely to survive)(distraction)

You have the remaining workers flee in random directions, this will give you the greatest advantage, they cannot hunt every single drone down, can they? A lone worker wading tree over tree collapses and his head lives long enough for you to catch a glimpse of its body trashing about. Just how fast can these things possibly be? Your drones go out one by one, their endothermic organs being targeted with an incredible degree of precision, and it seems that these animals ritualistically finish off every drone by decapitation, this is not how they behaved back at the river. Two of your drones manage to shake off their pursuers and end up near the lake, what do you have them do?

For the moment you grieve the loss of many of your brood, specially since it was to those infernal beasts. But no matter you will be able to produce more drones and you WILL have your revenge, these animals will know no quarrel, no mercy. Your scout tried to lift up one the lazy animals by the plains but it proves to be far too heavy for it to be done by a single scout drone. An idea pops to mind, you could make a heavy lift drone, if only you could spare more resources to it, perhaps with the death of so many you can.

The worker drones try with little luck to steal carrion, it seems like the crustaceans are burrowing into the lake for the night, which is weird since it will be colder. You lack infrared sensors on your workers to properly investigate how they are keeping warm, but you suspect a distributed system to carry heat under their exoskeletons. You cannot locate the source of the carrion meat without going upstream, since it seems that its carried by the current.

We have the acid in the form of refineries. We have the tech, we just need to assemble it with research is all.

It's been fun in a way, the struggle and fighting to making it that is.
>>

It actually reminds me of Endless Legend in a way.
The main quest is about exploring space, managing an empire, and developing vast industry and technology. This one is about trying to not freeze to death.

Can we make drones with acid burst, or was that a thing that the other hive queen picked up some where?
>>
>>37605820
It should be a basic adaption.
>>37605645
This queen will without a doubt become a very cold one.

You want your scout to return, it is late and a mother worries. He is now in his way back, it is cold but in an hour at most he will be at the entrance of the cave. You turn your attention to the worker drones, it will be good to investigate where this carrion is coming from so you send them out, but just in case they have split up and are at opposite shores of the river. It takes the better part of an hour to get close enough to the source.

There are many animal parts and half eaten corpses about, they have frozen over and litter the banks of the river, it seems that they are thrown over and float down towards the crustaceans, although why you are unsure. You prepare to have the drones come back when the all too familiar KEEK is heard, the drones scramble and before the one that had gotten closest to the body can turn around and start running, you see them, a pack of three beats heading towards it. In a moment they have caught up and your drone is no more. From the other shore you see as it is decapitated and thrown to the pile of nearby corpses, left there to freeze over.

Just then the beasts lock on your remaining drone, you can run, they will not catch you now, they must cross the river. But what you see next, is too much. These beasts jump into the freezing water and swim across their tails moving like fins, you are shocked and one pounces right out of the water and onto your drone, with a swift jerk of its head your connection is cut, you can no longer sense the drone. For a second you think of sending your scout there and investigate from high up, but just then it goes blank it was there and now it is not.

Okay so what if we made out guys with acid burst? that way if these keek guys go after us again they get ACID TO THE FACE!

Man this quest is depressing but at the same time morbidly interesting, like seeing a car crash into a crowded kindergarten in slow motion.
