As funny as it might be to simply let Zahak believe what he likes, you really probably should correct his misunderstanding. After all, what sort of father would you be if you let your son embarrass himself for your own amusement? “Actually, Zahak. Those are my companions, my friends. We're not related, we just travel together and spend a lot of time together.”

“Your mother is a woman named Chryssa or Chrys. She's a-” Well, you don't really know if she's a human. You think she's mostly human? “-Well, she's probably mostly human. I think. The horns are a mutation, maybe. Your uncle-brother is an Elven man named Profectus, or simply Prof. Your aunt is a Samjan woman named Darzi. I'm also Samjan, and my name is Mikhael, but you can just call me Papa. Your uncle is my former Master, his name is Karim.”

You run through your entire party, and most of the people you've encountered so far since Zahak hatched. His listens attentively, and once you've finished he poses a question. {But why does Chrys act like a Mom then? She took care of me for a looong time! She got me food and taught me things and plays games with me a lot! Those are mom things. Plus she always thinks about Papa! That's another mom thing! If she's not my mom, who is my mom? Oh! What kind of dragons are Samjan? Am I a Samjan? Why are your wings so narrow? How can you fly if you can't spread them out? You don't really look like me. Will I grow up to look like you? How do you breathe fire from your hands?}

Gods above, this kid can talk. You suppose he's in that phase children go through, where they're dreadfully curious about everything around them. Usually for Samjan it happens around five or six, but Zahak is only two weeks old. How do dragons age? You figured that, as reptiles, they'd mature faster than Samjan, Elven, or Human children but this seems excessive.

You clear your throat. You expected this question eventually, though not quite this soon. You didn't expect him to learn to speak for quite some time yet. “Well Zahak... you're what's called adopted. That means you're not my real son, though I certainly love you just like I would my real son.”

You use a bit of fire magic to make the area above your head appear as if a sheet of canvas, figures drawing themselves into existence. First Zahak's egg, sitting half buried in a puddle of lava. Then you come along and trip over him, before scratching your head and staring at his egg. The crudely drawn version of you shrugs its shoulders and continues on. Then you render his mother, a massive creature of scales and fangs and wings. You make sure to illustrate four, much larger eggs nestled against her abdomen.

“That was your mother, your real father is dead so far as I know. She thought you were going to be the runt of the litter, so she left you out in some random tunnel. I found you though, and I know what it's like to be cast off and abandoned by your friends, and your family, and the society you were raised in.”

The drawing above your head is replaced once more by an image of you in the stone hallway, Zahak's egg burried in the stone. You pry it out with some difficulty, and render a crude illustration of Chrys to carry him. Then you impress upon Zahak the various memories you have of meditating upon his egg, incubating him.

“I promise that, even if I might not always be around, I'll always love you just as if you were my real son. You're Zahak Abdul-Hakim, and I'm Mikhael Abdul-Hakim. We're both part of the same clan, as far as I'm concerned, and let nobody convince you otherwise.”
(1/3)
>>
You feel a sense of tightness in your chest, though you manage to avoid any outward show of emotion. Zahak seems confused, but tentatively you feel his mind touch yours. {So, you rescued me from my real Mom because she was mean, but I never had a dad?}

Well, you're not really sure how dragon reproduction works. So far as you know the male dragon had been dead for thousands of years, but the female dragon still seemed to be actively laying eggs and hatching young. Some of them were male, but only one of the dragons seemed to be laying... actually you suppose you don't really know. It was a strange situation.

“No, you have a Dad. I'm you're dad. Even if we don't look alike I'm the one that hatched you and I'll raise you just the same, better even, than any dragon ever could.”

You may have said that a little more forcefully than you'd intended, but Zahak doesn't seem to mind. He bumps the top of his head into your shoulder, you imagine that will hurt quite a bit once he grows more than dull nubs for horns, and a wave of positive emotions washes over you.

{I wouldn't have liked living underground. It's narrow and dark and you can't fly underground because rock would get in the way. Thank you for hatching me, Papa.}

You wreathe your hand in flame and run it along the side of Zahak's long neck. He hooks the long claw extending from the 'elbow' of his wing onto your arm in response. You spend the next few hours answering his questions about what a Samjan is, what is and isn't a goat, what Elves and Humans are, what magic is, and various other topics. He seems to be an endless font of questions, so time passes quickly.
(2/3)
>>
Eventually you're interrupted by your Master gasping for breath, his eyes snapping open. You hadn't even realized hours had passed, you'd been in the middle of answering a question regarding the nature of meditation. Your Master pushes himself up, looking blindly around the room before letting himself fall into the pillows behind him. “Gods above, Mikhael. What was that? I was floating through black, and then all of sudden I came across this massive stone arch. Inside was this swirling vortex of vys, pure vys! Not the diluted and tainted vys we produce and absorb. I've never felt so alive, so very real. I can see why you stepped inside, it was mystifying.”

You're a little surprised. “That was an open gateway into Surya's Heart, at least according to the Varistha. I think it's like primordial ooze for spirits and void creatures, where they're born. Then again, maybe it actually is the heart of Surya. Pani did wound him, and his blood is said to be vys. How do you feel? Are you alright?”

{Papa why is Karim so tired, he napped for forever.}

You scratch the base of Zahak's horns but don't immediately answer. Your Master pushes himself up after a moment's rest. “I don't know what it was, but it was incredible. I feel fantastic, better than I've felt in a hundred years at least. Now then, the secrets of enchanting! Shall we begin?”

Giving a demonstration involves telling him what you know.

>>37606884
You could do that. Fire would be the 'trigger rune', and then you would draw stone as the central, being affected by transmute. Then mud would be affecting transmute, but it would be broken up by slashes which connect to fire.

>>
>>37606860

>>
>>37606883
This would work as well, it would just be the stone rune being affected by the reinforce rune.
>>
>>37606951
Will we be showing him all the runes though in the end?
>>
>>37606860
Ask Master to create an iron sword via the create metamagic. Or ask if he has one lying around, I really just want to see him create one.

Then inscribe on it the Create, fire, transmute, sustain runes and permancy it to create a sword of pure fire as an advanced example.
>>
>>37606946
So you want to make him a self lighting opium pipe?
>>
>>37606982
We need iron rune to transmute it.
If he made a sword out of stone though it could work.
>>
>>37606924
where?
>>37606991
That could work, but what runes would be needed?
>>
>>37606991
That actually wouldn't be a bad idea... it would be create small fire, you might want to layer small a few times, but it would need a trigger of some sort. to avoid creating an ever-burning pipe. Maybe we could have it activate in the presence of stone? That way he can just drop a little rock in there along with his dope.
>>
>>37606997
You don't need the iron rune for that, it says in the pastebin you can transcribe is on the sword.
>>
>>37607008
Or he could tap it on some stone.
>>
>>37607000
I assmue create, fire, small a bunch of times, contain?, and make a small stone button over a stone proximity trigger.
>>
>>37607016
>>37607000
That's true. I suppose logically speaking you could place transmute as the center rune and then have it be affected by whatever you want it to be transmuted into, and then when the enchantment is activated it would transmute whatever it was drawn on.
>>
>>37607037
>>37607008

This idea would also work.

I think we should probably let our master finalize it, and cast permanency on it once we teach him how. That way we set it up for him, but let him actually perform the action.

Is pretty hard.
>>
>>37607348
Your insanity also isn't what it used to be. You used to get a +8, but now you only get a +6. Well, and an additional +2 from being an enchanter.
>>
>>37607386
>You used to get a +8, but now you only get a +6.
HA, told you fuckers we didn't lose sanity.
>>

So we need 3 29s?
>>
>>37607413
Or just a shitload of vys.
>>
>>37607413
Well, 2 technically. You could also get anywhere between a 19 and a 28 and be able to turn the roll into a success.
>>
>>37607386
Don't we get a bonus for being near the library where the veil is thin?
>>
>>37607386
>You used to get a +8, but now you only get a +6.
Great now we're a shitty enchanter.
>>
>>37607413
nope 27s, which means we are gonna be spending vys for this.
>>
>>37607425
Yes, you would. If you were in the Grand Library I'll say you'd get an additional +4. If you managed to find the weakest part of the veil, +6. This far from the Grand Library, I'd say a +2.
>>
>>37607429
At least it shuts up the doomsayers saying our insanity has risen all the time.
>>37607423
Does reality mediation help out?
>>
>>37607386
>and an additional +2 from being an enchanter

Any way to improve that? A vatis workshop/laboratory? Specialize tools?
>>
>>37607448
Nobody has been doomsaying about rising insanity since we got the ring, turbonerd.
>>
>>37607457
There are both magical and mundane ways to improve your enchanting rolls, be they for inscription or finalization. I can't just tell you what they are, though.
>>
>>37607447
So basically if we spend 10 vys we need to hit 2 22s at minimum.
>>
>>37607459
Look in the last thread or the thread before that and crtl+f insanity.
>>
>>37607468
Or is it 21?
>>
>>37607468
Well, lets see. +6 from insanity, +2 from enchanter, +2 from the veil being thin. So +10 total. DC would be 35, so you'd need to get a 25 to succeed. You can spend 10 vys, so if you got 2 rolls of 20 you could turn both of those into successes.
>>
>>37607476
We were talking about madness, corruption and possession from all the entities we're surrounded by.

>>37607519

>>
>>37607500
What if we do something similar to eroding our soul with stone magic, but instead eroding the threads of reality we need with earth magic?
>>
>>37607520
I mean, you can't bring things with you into the void so you can't really enchant things while doing reality meditation.

>>37607541
That's actually a method you learned to make meditating on metas easier in 'Abusing Reality', a book you read a while back. So yeah, you could totally do that to create artificial weakness in the veil.
>>
>>37607559
so lets do that, but we have to roll not to fail right?
>>

Spoooonfeeding, Anon. SPOOONFEEDING
Consider that metal is the element typically used for mending objects. Fulvia used it previously to repair her shot up chassis. It's been stated to reinforce the mind and help reality assert itself.

Water, by contrast, is the element used to knit together flesh and bone, to restore the bodies of the living. It doesn't have any obvious mental/metaphysical properties.
>>
We seen places where the veil is even thinner than +4. Also its likely that we can reverse the process (which could be a good mediation to improve metal). No need to panic.
>>
>>37607900
Alright, can we do that after we're done? I'm sure the master doesn't need our crutches.

Literally what? >>37607582 and >>37607585 were talking about Abusing Metaphysics in response to Soma's post. The latter asking what happens if we use poison, hence the image.

>>
>>37607917
or we can just ask him if he want us to fix it or not.
>>
>>37607881
Making it weaker makes it easier to tear.
But since it looks like we can mend it, it's probably fine, I say we restore it to what it was before we weakened it once we're done here/teaching.
>>
>>37607917
I doubt anyone is going to object.

>>37607936

He has enough vys reserves to match the DC without even rolling, he doesn't need a +4 bonus.

>>
>>37607900
>It doesn't have any obvious mental/metaphysical properties.
Well, if we associate metal with mending and reinforcement, stone with erosion and change, fire with destruction, and nature with observation and control.
I think water could be creation and flow.
How does that apply to dicking reality?
Fuck if I know.
>>
>>37607968
I don't think that counts as metaphysical/metal, anon.
Possibly about being smarter, or healing the mind in a different way than metal.
What we felt during our GM meditation might have a clue hidden in it.
Maybe hybrid magic would help.
We still need to do the whole "cut off arm, grow it back, while also creating an arm out of ice, and one out of plants, mimicking what we're doing with the healing" thing.
So Soma, you never answered, could we do the out-of-body anatomy study on ourselves? If you can't say that, then please tell us, does that level of meditation remove/dull Mik's senses(particularly touch and pain) significantly, or at all?

That's the idea with oebis enlargement.
But really, if we're consciously bending our will to change, then it should be just as easy to bend it back to the original. I have a feeling learning more metal will help, since that involves changing our arms into different things.
Of course, we'll need to dedicate a whole meditation to memorizing the way our body is right now before trying anything significant.

>>
>>37608222

>>
>>37608214
The reason why i said not careful is because we could forget our previous form, or even have our brains think the new one feels more natural.
Also it seems like, both fire and metal priest have special blades attacked to the body based on their element, i wonder if water priest do as well.
>>
>>37608237
We've already made ice arm blades.
Or do you mean something more specialized, like a frost blade/rapid cooling blade?
>>
>>37608225
You should have been here when we talked about the more painful ways to kill and torture people(burn away body while healing the head, freeze lungs, make vlood flow backwards, erode their boney so we can break them with little effort barehanded, or my personal favourite, cut their throat repeatedly while healing the arteries/necessary stuff, weaken the bones, then tear off their head with our bare hands) as well as fucked up experiments involvig animals and people, like putting a person's head on a dog, or stitching two dogs together after we cut them in half.
>>
>>37608208
>>37608204
>>37608198
Way i figure it, transforming a creature would require surgically removing any excess parts while maintaining the body using water magic, using nature magic to change the way the subject perceives it self, using water magic to grow it into the desired form while still maintaining all it's bodily functions, and finally using metal magic to reinforce the whole thing and repair any damage done to it's mind and soul during the whole process.
To top it off we could use nature magic + Metal magic again to return his mind to the state it was before, but that could lead to intense mental stress, shock, and trauma, and would lower a vatis's capabilities of healing him.
>>
>>37608250
No clue, but it seems like both the fire blade and metal are specialized in a certain way.

>>37608278
Fire blade sounded like a plasma cutter to my caffined mind. The Metal stuff seemed like something made for super strong piercing/cutting attacks with the way the book described the combat forms.
>>
>>37608268
Of course, this would require extensive research on both human anatomy and psych, and the form we wish to morph our subject into.
I recommend starting off with simple mutations like devising a way for a human to function properly with a third arm, or even something simpler like growing all sorts of vestigial growths on a body with out them serving any function.
>>

You grab your cloak and reach inside, extracting a piece of parchment and an inkwell. “Master Karim, do you have a pipe you're particularly fond of? I know the hookah is your favorite, but what I have in mind would really work better with a pipe.”

He raises an eyebrow curiously but nods, springing to his feet with surprising nimbleness for a five hundred year old blind man. “I have just the one in mind. Wait here.” He makes for the stairs up the third floor, and you turn your attention to Zahak.

“Master Karim wasn't sleeping earlier, he was meditating. Although he was using a very strange method to do so. Perhaps I teach you once you're older, though I don't think you're quite ready to learn it yet.”

Zahak hisses in displeasure. {Why come he gets to learn it and I don't? What are you teaching him now? Can I at least learn it?}

You sigh. “No, Zahak. Perhaps when you're older, as I've no doubt you'll prove quite capable. For now though it is a powerful and dangerous tool. I want you to know that I only deny you because I worry for your safety.”

He lays down moodily, wings folding against his sides as he rest his head on a pillow. You reach out through the brooches to Master Karim while Zahak is busy sulking. {I'm going to perform some preparations which involve weakening the veil. I'll be able to mend it once we've finished.}

His response is prompt. {That's fine, just be careful. The veil is already weak. I saw holes all over the place when I was in that grey corridor you described. Tiny holes, but holes nonetheless. A lot of them too.}

That's mildly concerning, you didn't know that was a phenomena that could occur. Regardless, you slip into a meditative trance and quickly peel back the layers of ambient vys. Once submerged in that black realm you focus on silencing any errant thoughts and detaching yourself from the binds of reality. Slowly, a vast network of thin golden filaments fades into view. They stretch on infinitely in any one direction, but you're really only interested in those closest to you.

Inspecting the threads, you find they appear only slightly frayed. Some have split or seem on the cusp of breaking apart entirely, but most a strong. Carefully, you begin to channel Earth magic towards many of the near-by threads. You weaken those very constants which bind reality together, the gaps between the threads nearest you swiftly expanding. Your attention shifts quickly from thread to thread, and once you feel you've done as much as you can without risking a thread breaking, you draw yourself once more into the waking world.

When your eyes snap open, the air feels... different somehow. Everything seems to have taken on a more surreal feeling you probably wouldn't have noticed otherwise. Lights seem brighter, distances seem greater, colors seem sharper and more vibrant. It's interesting, to say the least.

Your master sits across from you with a pipe in hand. The neck is dark, well-worn wood with a spiraling pattern carved into it, while the bowl is made of brass. The bit, where one would place their lips, seems to be cherry wood or some other similarly light toned wood. He holds it up for you to inspect. “My first pipe, it holds sentimental value in addition to being a damned good pipe. Now, why do you need it?”

You grin. “I'm going enchant it to create fire in the presence of stone, so you'll never need to light it yourself again. Simply tap it against a wall and in an instant you'll have a slow, simmering flame at the bottom of the bowl.

Your master seems intrigued, and passes the pipe to you. You take it from his hands and quickly sketch out the design for the rune you have in mind on the piece of paper you got out earlier. The central rune is fire, and it's being affected by two 'small' runes. Then affecting fire is a create and a sustain rune. However, the create rune is disconnected from the central rune by two slashed lines, which in turn connect to a stone rune.

You quickly run your master through what each of the runes mean, passing the paper his way. “So, the central rune is what is being acted upon. What the other runes are affecting. In this case, it's fire. The two runes overlapping the central Fire rune are 'small' runes. Runes overlapping other runes alter that rune some way. In this case, you'll have a small fire instead of a large one.”

“Each of those lines connecting to the circle surrounding the Fire runes are affecting that rune. In this case, the on on... your left is the create rune, and the one on your right is the sustain rune. The sustain rune is used to maintain an effect, in this case the creation of fire, without the need for a constant influx of vys. Create is pretty much what the name would suggest, it creates things.”

“Now, those slashed lines indicate a gate. You can sort of translate it as an 'if X then Y' statement. In this case, that statement should read if Stone, then Create. If there is stone present, then create fire. Oh, and that reminds me. The rune connected to the slashed lines is stone. I'll give you a full list of the runes I know once we've finished. So far as I'm aware, you will need to meditate on the runes and their meanings to truly 'learn' them.”

Another option would be the chimera option.
Starting with something simple such as replacing the limbs of different subjects, taking a dog's leg and replacing it with a smaller dog's leg. This way we can perform faster testing without worrying about actually growing the limbs.
Progressing from this would be attaching the limbs of different species, attaching nonsensical limbs such as a reptile's tail replacing a human tongue, to further practice versatility and mental accommodation.
Taking it further, would be attaching multiple heads to a body, or even stitching several bodies together in a way the interlinks their minds as well. This might require dealing with their souls though, which is a whole other subject.

Excuse my ramblings.

Your Master nods, his full attention devoted to you. You carefully erode the design of your rune onto the bottom of the bowl using Earth magic. It's slow going work, because you're working on such a small scale and any mistake could mean disaster. Eventually you finish up, and blow into the bowl to clear out any metal shavings. You hold the result up to the light in peer inside to get a better look at it. Satisfied with the result, you allow your Master to take a look at it.

“You have to be very, very careful when inscribing runes because even the slightest error could lead to massive disaster. Especially with more powerful runes. I imagine if I made a mistake with this enchantment the worst we could expect is that it would incinerate your opium.”

You start to channel vys into the pipe, the runes beginning to glow brightly. You show this to your Master. “What I'm starting now is called Finalization. It's the last step in completing an enchantment. I'll need to slip into a trance, so expect me to be unresponsive for a while.”

You retract the pipe and channel yet further vys into the brass bowl. Then, you close your eyes and allow your mind to be dragged deep, deep into the blackness of reality at its most basic. The runes appear in front of you, a twisting, dancing collection of glowing lines. You take them in hand, twisting them carefully into an odd sort of shape. It's almost like a chair, except with a variety of weird angles.

Next you go in search of the section of the network which corresponds to the basic make-up of the pipe on a metaphysical level. It's surprisingly easy to find. You seem to be able to 'feel' what any one collection of filaments represent. Reaching out, you grab hold of the thread which represents the pipe and rip it free, reality starting to rapidly unravel as a result. Quickly, you shove in the glowing lines constructed from the runes you drew in the gap where the pipe used to be.
>>
In an instant reality reasserts itself, the framework once more pristine. You take a moment to drift across this strange landscape repairing what you've damaged with Metal magic. It's a surprisingly simple, if incredibly draining task. Truly, each line you repair seems to draw the life out of you. However, you finish quickly and allow yourself to be drawn back to the waking world, your eyes snapping open to find that strange surrealness the world held is gone.

>Congratulations! You created the Dopest Dope Pipe!

You hold up the pipe so your master can see it, before tapping it lightly against the stone floor. A burst of light emanates from the bowl, followed by a dim, lasting glow. You tap it again and the light vanishes. Your master is duly impressed, it seems all he can do not to dance with excitement.

“Gods above, Mik! You weren't lying! I half expected you were just pulling some sort of long con so you could tell me to go screw myself in the end, but you really did it!”
