Your name is Arhan.

You are a being of the warp, cast in the image of a Space Marine, the angels of death. Your physical form resembles one such warrior in black power armor, but it is clear to you now that you are no space marine.

Across the shell of ceramite red warpfire rolls and licks across the surface of the black metal, and within your armored shell there is no body, no bones, only a raging inferno of flame, a furnace of warpfire that seems to be your spirit, your life.

You are the first of the Awakened, those among the Legion who have their own mind and will, who can think and speak. There are a few others, but the majority of your forces are the Unawakened, and cannot think for themselves, moving in simplistic instinctual killing urges, destroying the enemy as they see them. They cannot think for themselves, but can follow simple orders.

You go where the winds of the warp send you, to embattled and desperate Imperial worlds that you might answer the prayers of the faithful there, saving them from certain death with swift intervention.

Your latest campaign is upon the surface of a cold iceball of a planet, under attack by Orks and opportunistic dark eldar. Thus far you have met with some of the guardsmen fighting here, and have saved a small girl named Cyrene, currently in the care of a guard squad in the same embattled down as yourself.

Now, the battle for this frozen world continues...

You are upon your warbike, the flaming tired biting through the snow as you ride through the cold outpost town. All about you your brethren are engaging the forces of the Dark Eldar as they flit through the buildings, falling upon this outpost of the Imperial Guard with terrible fury.

You now ride to the aid of a small group of guardsmen who are trapped outside the defensive perimeter and under attack from multiple dark eldar units. You see them dimly before you, a few figures trapped in the open where they were ambushed, but it's hard to make out details.

You see one man fighting with a blade, the roar of the chainsword evident over the howling snowy wind, a few others are shooting at enemies who flit and dance across the snowy landscape, the guard pinned down by a groundcar.

>State actions and roll for engagement. 1d100, low good, first 3 rolls will be considered.

You rev the engine, red fire and black smoke coughing from the exhaust as you ride forwards, chainsword in hand as it leaves a trail of flames through the air. You bear down on the embattled group like a meteor, trailing fire and melted snow in your flaming wake. With a slash of your blade the roaring inferno of chain teeth take the head from the shoulders of one of the attackers, but they are too swift for you to hit more before you're out the other side.

You turn, seeing the swordsman leading the guard disemboweling an eldar on his chainblade before decapitating the alien with a snap of the sword, waving his hand to the others as the aliens come again.

You draw your plasma pistol, red light glowing from the energy core. In your other hand you bring up your chainsword, the spiked handguard ready, the teeth smouldering. You will it into life, the flaming teeth roaring into a twisting inferno in your hand.

With a growl like glaciers colliding you charge forward, your ethereal flames whipping about you in the icy winds. Your pistol barks in your grip as you put a burning red bolt of energy into one of the enemy, blasting him to ash and charred bones. Your inferno sword slashes twice, reducing another foe to smoking chunks as you link up with the guardsmen.

You see their leader is a commissar, chainsword in hand as he snaps shots with a laspistol. Several other guardsmen are arrayed around him. The commissar swears in what sounds like Orkish as he sees you.

As you approach you feel an odd sensation you have not experienced before, a strange weight pressing upon you as you draw near to their position.

You stay close to the guardsmen despite the odd sensation, your roiling flames burn a little lower, as if starved of oxygen despite being able to burn in the vacuum of space.

"Hold fast Guardsmen, your salvation has come." You declare, blasting another eldar to cinders with your roaring pistol.

"Flank them if you can!" You call, standing atop the barricade and drawing enemy fire upon yourself to take pressure from the fragile humans. It seems they have done well for themselves, the bodies of several of the xenos raiders laying dead before their little bit of cover.

"Move!" Shouted the commissar, waving his chainsword and rallying the troops. "The Emperor is with us!" He shouts in a commanding voice. As you watch, they obey and move quickly, the strange feeling lessening a bit.

With a grunt and a roar you leap forwards towards the survivors, slashing and burning with your roaring chainsword and its teeth of hellfire. You butcher and blast them with plasma shots as the guardsmen lay into them with their guns. Three of the foe are vaporized in a blinding flash of heat from a heavy weapon.

It is over before you truly know it, a xenos is cut in half and as you turn to smite the next you see no more to be found. You have taken some damage, minor wounds pit and scar your armored shell in places, but you will mend.

The guardsmen stand cautiously from their cover, overlooking the scene before them.

"By the Emperor." One of them breathes. "Space Marines."

The commissar keeps his eyes on you, blade held in a seemingly relaxed grip. "Yes, very fortunate of you to arrive when you did. The Emperor protects." He said with a nod, a slovenly trooper ambling up beside him.

It seems you've found commissar... Cain it was, by the earlier vox traffic.

You hear on the vox that the battle seems to be burning out, your brethren have carried the day.

You turn to the man in the long coat and sash of the commissariat.

"What are you doing out here commissar?" You ask in your deep voice.

The commissar looks you over, seeming to notice your strange appearance now that he was out of combat. "We received some unusual reports from the auspex here, set up to see when the orks are coming for the capital, so our detachment was sent to investigate, then they came." He said with a gesture to the fallen eldar.

"Sabotage?" You ask curiously.

"Perhaps." He said in a guarded way, "Never can tell with their kind." He said with a shrug.

"Where abouts were you initially stationed? They could have attempted to draw you out to weaken your lines against the orks."
>>
"Where were you initially stationed?" You ask, looking to the dead aliens.

"The capital, when I heard that some of our border stations were reporting anomalous contacts I thought it best to inspect it personally." He said with a nod. "It seems I was correct."

"Wretched xenos monsters." You say with disgust, looking to the dead reavers. "But what did they want?"

Lucerne, your techmarine, responds over the vox. "Commander, I believe I have an answer. The thick cloud and storm cover prevents satellite surveillance and greatly limits visibility. If a hole were to be opened in these border auspex stations, the capital would not know the enemy was upon them until they were in visual range."

"The Orks." Cain said, horror dawning on him. "If our perimeter is compromised, the whole damned horde could charge up to the city without us knowing."

"Wouldn't know until we smelled them." The disheveled soldier beside the commissar said.

"Commander, I'm seeing other fluctuations in the sensor net, it's possible other auspex stations have been subverted already." Lucerne informs you.
>>
>>37614033
Don't be a butt. It was on topic.
>>
>>37614243
Make haste to remove xenos from this planet. Tell the commissar to let the capital know this information and to get ready.
>>
"Inform the capital at once of our situation here, we shall be making best possible speed to them to assist their defense." You intone.

A few moments later the reply comes. "I can't get through sir." Lucerne tells you. "The storm dampens vox traffic and the hardlines seem to have been cut, we shall have to inform them in person."

A most grave development, it seems the dark eldar's plan truly was to blind the capitol to the incoming ork threat until it was directly atop them.

"City's already on high alert, they won't be defenseless." Cain informs you. "But they will suffer casualties if the orks take them without warning."

"You could ride ahead on your bike, sir." Lucerne tells you. "But that would separate you from us and put you out there alone... also there is a very insistent girl here who wants to know if you're okay." He said, evidently being pestered by young Cyrene about your situation.

You feel what could be good humor stealing over you, it is not a feeling you are very familiar with. "I shall be there shortly."

You return to the central compound, finding the small girl waiting, bundled now in a too-large coat that drags behind her. You kneel to be on her level. "I am alright." You say, showing her your only slightly damaged armored form. "You were worried?"

She nods, swaying side to side in place, not seeming to want to speak. You look up to your men as you rise. "We ride, making for the capitol, it may already be under attack."

They set about preparing to go, the humans do not seem to wish to disobey you, little Cyrene staying close by your side, her head coming up by your knee. You get upon your warbike, patting your lap for the child to climb up, and she does so as you set off towards the city, barely able to see the road before you in the thick snow.

You know the capitol is set in large underground caves to protect it from the weather, it should be fairly defensible.

>>37614825
>Converse with guardsmen/awakened
What's the capitol like will they fire on us as we approach? Any places we can close to make better killzones?
>>
>>37614825
OP, we have basically no idea about the topography. If we're supposed to know it, tell us. If not, then we ask about it: where is the city, from which directions can it be approached, where are the entrances, where are the auspex outposts, etc.
>>
>>37616010
>>37616038
The city is built into a series of large caves and into the foothills of a mountain range. It is connected to the outside by large storm doors leading through long tunnels into the city proper, though it is theorized that orks could dig tunnels to enter into other points.

The auspex stations form a ring around the city, and if the orks are truly coming through the places where the stations seem to be acting oddly then it seems that they will be coming from planetary east.

Once inside, the city is built in some places as a tunnel warren with structures built into the sides of the tunnels and carved out of living rock, in the center it is more like a traditional city built within a massive central cavern, with a few other caverns nearby.

Two obvious strategies would be to hold up inside the city, or to stay outside of it and engage the orks in the open before they reach the doors.

The imperial guard are dug in around the entrances, and there are also automated defense turrets guarding the gates.
>>
>>37616169
In the open, then. There's no way we're going to let the guardsmen get wiped out before we even get a chance to fight.
>>
>>37616169
I guess we take them out in the open then.
>>
>>37616169
In the open, Hit them and draw them away.
>>
You vox your plan to the others, informing them that you will reinforce the guardsmen in the outer defensive perimeter, though you wonder how long they will be able to hold until it becomes a siege.

You make good time, better now in fact. The guardsmen ride in Chimera transports, your troops riding on the tops of the hulls, save for the commissar who rides in a Salamander recon vehicle near you. The man voxes to you after a few miles down the road.

"And who shall I tell the Colonel that you are exactly? I've fought alongside astartes before, and the only ones who seemed to burn of their own accord were not the kind we wanted to associate with."

>>
>>37616287
We are simply Servants of The Emperor. No more no less.
>>
>>37616398
This. Can't really think of anything else.
>>
"We are simply servants of the Emperor. No more, no less." Is all that you say. The vox is silent for a moment.

"The Emperor protects." Comes the reply.

"Yes, he does, and he has sent us to carry that will out. We shall be the hammer, to break the enemy upon the anvil of the city's defenses. Take your men to the trenches with their kinsmen, we shall engage the enemy's flanks and harass them so they cannot offer constant pressure, hold the line and we shall break them between us."

After that the trip passes in mostly silence, only sometimes broken by chatter between the humans or your Awakened brothers. Soon you reach the city, though in truth you cannot see it, only the dim shapes of mountains through the snow that cuts visibility down to near nothing.

"Sir, I think I've got vox contact, it's shaky but it's there." Lucerne said, having patched himself into the com gear on one of the Chimeras. "I think I can patch you through."

>Anything to say to the city and its defenders, you seem to have arrived before the orks.

>>
You key your vox, broadcasting to any who might hear.

"Know children of the Emperor, you do not fight alone. For we are His instruments and he is always with you. His gaze falls upon you even now, and under that immortal vision the predations of the alien cannot stand. We have come to fight by your side, and to deliver you from this cold night. Stand ready, the enemy is almost upon us, but they shall be found wanting in His sight."

You look down to the little orphan girl in your lap. "You're going to have to leave me, little one. It is not safe where I am going." She hugs tighter to your armored chest. "You'll be safe, we won't let anyone harm you." You say, in an uncharacteristically soft voice.

You hand little Cyrene off to the commissar and his aid, somewhat pitying them for having to deal with the pouting child. You have an unknown length of time before the orks are upon you all, but you do not imagine that you have very long. Are there any plans or preparations to make before the enemy arrives?
>>
>>37616776
Have The devastators set up firing lines, have assaults set up for quick deploy when the orks get close. heavy vehicles that are active set up, light vehicles on hold to flank. Snipers kill targets of opportunity.
>>
>>37616853
this is good.
>>
"Lucerne, set up your devastators in defensive lines, Valkyr I want your assaults further out in hiding, when the orks move through we'll hit them in close quarters."

As you get closer you see the defensive lines for yourself, it looks fairly solid, Chimera transports and Leman Russ tanks are entrenched behind berms of snow and dirt, depressed in dugouts so only their turrets peek above the snowy ground as makeshift bunkers.

Then there are the trenches, like a spiders web across the snowy ground, heavy weapons emplacements and rows upon row of guardsmen standing ready to repel the enemy, each position set up as a strongpoint before one of the great steel storm doors that defends the entry tunnels.

You dismount, hunkering down in the lee of a snowdrift, your flames barely flickering as you wait for the enemy to come. You're not quite sure how long you wait, the light level never changes, there is only the blowing snow and howling winds.

Then you hear it, the distant grinding of engines and the bellowing of the greenskins in their massed numbers as they grind on blindly through the snow towards their target, unable to see the forces laying in wait.

You vox the defenders to inform them of the imminent contact, and ready yourself for battle.

(Sorry, took longer than I thought)

"Lucerne, open up with the tanks, take out as much of their vehicles as you can, we need to keep them footslogging and in the kill zone." You vox to your defensive line, the techmarine acknowledging your orders.

You ready your pistol and sword, keying up your jump pack as Valkyr and his assaults do the same, ready, waiting. The first elements of the orkish horde pass you and then, a few moments later, all hell breaks loose.

The APCs and tanks of the guard line open up, their weapons fire dim flashes through the snowy haze, barely distinct. Missile launchers, las and plasma cannons open up from your entrenched warriors, sending warheads, beams of light and burning orbs of balefire towards the enemy, slamming into the front lines of their scrap vehicles as they approach.

Undaunted, the horde bellows their warcry as they charge towards the muffled gunfire.

"Now!" You order, rising into the sky on wings of smoke and flame, seeking your target. You see an open topped transport filled with monstrous orks and drop towards it like a bolt from the heavens, pumping red plasma shots downwards as you fall, incinerating a few before you slam into their midst, pulping orks with the impact of your armored form.

You begin slashing and cutting with your chainsword, the flaming teeth a whirring inferno that separated heads from bodies and tore chests apart, the shocked orks rising in the close quarters to attack.

You decide not to get stick in a brawl with a dozen enraged orks inside their own vehicle. You look upwards, activating your jump pack, and leap free of the vehicle's troop bay, the flames of your departure scorching the face from an ork who got too close.

Just like that you're out of it, like a pilot emerging from a cloud bank. In the space of the few moments it took for you to enter and exit, a full scale battle has broken out. Orks charge forward and are cut down by fanning lanes of lasgun fire that are so thick they could almost be walked upon, your brethren are moving through the enemy ranks, killing as they go, tacticals and devastators opening up from the trench lines.

You look around, seeing one overlarge ork rallying troops around him, cuffing smaller ones about the head to urge them onwards into the maelstrom above.

Then as if a hand of an angered god slammed into your side, a missile hits you in the side, one of the randomly cartwheeling rockets fired blindly into the Imperial lines and you twist and turn, before slamming into the snow.

You're up in an instant as you leap to your feet, weapons at the ready. The monstrous ork laughed as he closed, a few of its smaller kin charging forwards, some batting them aside as they tried to get at you faster.

You ready yourself, firing your plasma pistol as the monster charges, lighting your jump pack to launch up over the smaller ork's heads as you leap directly towards the terrible foe.

A crude bolt shell hit your chestplate as you passed over one of the beasts, before you slam into the greater beast like a thunderbolt, driving him back as you slash at him. The beast roars and slams its armored brow into your helmet, gripping your chest with its massive power claw and starting to crush.

Feeling your armor breaking as the great ork pulls you off his face, you raise your weapons again. The great beast laughs raucously as he starts to crush you like a tin can. His laughing face vanishes in a torrent of ash and molten flesh as you decapitate him with a plasma pistol shot to the eye, the dead body dropping you as you land on your feet.
