September 15th, 2053.

You are still Maryland: formerly a USN battleship, then an Abyssal warship, now a kanmusu with your fellow war veterans. Today has seen you make your first major inroads with your peers after an afternoon spent in the O-Club with them, having out-hustled Bismarck and Tirpitz at a "friendly" game of darts.

You figure all that needed to happen was for the others to see you as being like them, rather than just a "rehabilitated Abyssal".

Now, however, you find yourself called aside by the super-Dreadnought Yamato: a regal and dignified young woman in a near de facto leadership role over the ships of the former Imperial Japanese Navy.

Something about her attitude makes her seem uncomfortable as she escorts you to a small, private room in the club and motions for you to sit in an overstuffed leather chair.

You settle into the deep leather cushions, shifting your weight until you find the most comfortable position. It's a little warm for your taste, and it sticks a bit to your exposed legs and wrists, but you try your best to hide your discomfort.

After all, it seems that Yamato is doing the same.

She coughs twice, then looks you in the eye briefly before turning slightly to break the momentary contact. All the while, you notice she refuses to drop the facade of poise and power she's trying to present you.

Then, finally, she speaks.

"How much do you remember, Maryland?"

"From before I was taken by the Abyssal, or while I was one of its tools?" you ask, needing some clarification.

Yamato bites her lip. "Both, I suppose. Whatever you believe I need to know. You have no need to hold back, I assure you."

You ponder her request for a second or two, trying to discern why she's asking you this in private: and now of all times, well after she found out who and what you are.

>Tell her what you can, focus on the War. Strange that those are your fonder memories.
>Tell her what you can, but include information about the Abyssal. You figure that's what she's really here for anyway.

"Well," you begin haltingly, not entirely sure what it is Yamato wants to hear, "I remember that there were a number of me when we were with the Abyssal, and that I had to kill them all. And I remember being killed by myself a couple of times... which is weird."

Yamato raises an eyebrow at you, but otherwise remains silent as you continue the story.

"I also know that at each stage in the game I started to remember more of my previous life. Like that time at Surigao straight with some of the other old-timers, where we jumped two of your old-timers. Fusō and Yamashiro, I think? Mogami too... it was a real mess."

Yamato nods. "I've heard about that day from Yamashiro. She's still less than thrilled about it."

"And I'm still not thrilled about watching Ari blow up," you reply.

"It would have been easier had you not remembered that, I think."

As you're getting ready to shoot off a snarky reply, you hear a knock at the door. Yamato sighs, before calling "it's open!"

Nagato steps into the room, her eyes quickly sweeping it before settling on Yamato.

"I thought we agreed that this was unwise," Nagato growls softly.

Yamato shrugs in cool indifference. "I recall no such agreement, Miss Nagato."

"Wait, hold the phone," you interrupt. "What did you mean by an agreement? I mean, if it's not to not interrogate me, you don't have to worry Nagato."

Nagato shifts her gaze to face you. "It is not that, Mary."

"I do recall Miss Nagato mentioning something she wished for me to not bring up," Yamato admits, "but I can hardly say I recall agreeing not to pursue it."

Something about this makes you a little nervous... what is it that's concerned them?

"I still do not believe this is something we need to know," Nagato tells Yamato. "You asked my advice and I gave it to you: do not concern yourself with this matter."

"It concerns my SISTER," Yamato hisses, the image of calm momentarily disturbed before she catches herself. "You may be my senior, but when it comes to Musashi I refuse to stand by."

"What do you mean?" you ask Yamato. "What's this about Musashi? She seemed fine when I saw her earlier today, aside from not wearing an actual shirt."

Nagato turns to you, concern evident in her face as she resigns herself to the situation. "Some time ago, a few of our sisters fell out of contact. Near the Bonin Islands. It was only for a week, but it had all of us a bit nervous."

"Musashi was one of those," Yamato tells you, "along with Kitakami, Ooi, and Taihou."

"But she's fine?" you ask, uncertain if there's something here you missed. "I can't see a problem."

"The problem," Yamato presses, "is that none of the four recall anything about that week. At all."

"You asked them?" Nagato asks quietly.

Yamato nods. "None of them realize that they've all forgotten one week."

"And you all remember that week?" you question Yamato, trying to narrow down the possibilities.

"Of course. It's only the four girls who were out of contact."

You sigh, understanding why it was that Yamato called you here. "You want to know if the Abyssal had something to do with it."

"I do. Nagato didn't want me to ask, but if you could remember anything at all I'd be grateful."

"You do not have to force it," Nagato reminds you softly. "Not if you do not wish to dwell on it any longer."

"I haven't met three of them yet," you explain to your fellow battleships, "so I've got nothing to work with. If you can get me pictures of what Kitakami, Ooi, and Taihou I may be able to remember something."

Yamato nods and produces a small purse from one a small pouch on her left thighhigh, apparently having come prepared for such a request. From it she pulls three little pictures, and hands the first to you.

"This is Kitakami," she explains.

You look at her, focusing. Black hair with a braid and bangs, greenish school uniform, light cruiser by the look of her...

You look closely at her... and then it strikes you. A definite sense of familiarity, both from your own memories and the memories of the "Maryland" clone you simply refer to as #3. Beyond that, you recall little more aside from a vague feeling of sadness.

"I've got something at least," you tell Yamato. "One of the clones of me that I killed had seen her, and there's some sadness there. Though I can't be sure why, it could just be that I'm still not happy about killing Number 3. She was nice."

Yamato shakes her head. "Number Three? I see. I suppose that's a start."

She then passes you a second photograph: this one of Ooi. As Nagato looks on nervously, you take in the details of Ooi's image. Possibly related to Kitakami, you figure, with similarly plain looks and even more nondescript brown hair...

Again, something about this seemingly nondescript girl gives you pause. You remember her, once more from the memories of #3. But something else disturbs you this time.

#3 felt she deserved death.

You explain your new findings to your companions, who seem uneasy about the revelation. Nagato in particular seems concerned about what may happen next.

"You can stop any time you want," she insists.

You shake your head. "No, this is what I want to do. I want to help, and I need to know."

Yamato passes you the third picture, of Taihou.

She seems a lot like Sara and Lex, but more heavily armored all around: especially on her flight deck. She has pretty brown hair, and her uniform is strange. It has a black under layer with a green skirt, white sleeves, and what looks to be an iron armor plate across her abdomen.

Once again, #3's memories reveal that at some point you've seen Taihou as well. And this time it can't be from passing her on-base: she's been on patrol since you arrived. There's no way you've seen her face to face since you joined Nagato's team.

"I see," Yamato's eyes narrow as you explain this to her. "It seems I may have been correct in my suspicions."

Nagato crosses her arms and shuts her eyes, deep in thought. "Mary, what do you believe this all means about what happened to Musashi and her squad during that week?"

I'm not sure about the timeline. Was this before or after the abyss girls first started appearing? Maybe they captured some girls to find out how things worked to make their own?

Though that doesn't explain why their memories are missing, which implies they were let go if captured.
>>
>>37686244
I don't remember screaming and death at least. So that's good. However I don't remember enough.

What we do all remember is #3 getting captured by the Abyssals and getting drug off for whatever. Therefore, I don't think that they're brainwashed, the Abyssals would be trying to capture everyone then.

However, we should probably be on the lookout for clones like myself and Enterprise. How effective these clones or even there existence would need to be confirmed first hand since I don't have any memories.

Not enough to go on really. Perhaps we should ask if/how they were damaged, if their behavior changed, and if the Abyssal behavior changed after they returned.

Perhaps an attempt at forcefully turning them into sleeper units?

whatever the situation, I believe that Ooi engaged in combat and killed/destroyed/damaged something that #3 believed to be important...

It is possible the Sadness towards Kitakami could be pity, suggesting something unpleasant occurred to her...

and all we can do is confirm that whatever happened, Taihou was there as well, though it is possible that whatever happened, her reaction/response was expected...

Perhaps some kind of experimental Jamming test? The effect could have been crippling to Ooi, worked on Taihou but Kitakami tried to fight back?

So, we have one case of sadness, one case of "Bitch should die" and one of "Yeah, I've seen this chick before", aall coming from Mary #3.

I think...
The four of them encountered Mary #3, they fought and were captured, Ooi either fucked up or did/suffered SOMETHING that made M3 think she deserved to die, and finally they were released.

We can be sure M3 returned to base after the encounter because we killed her there, and it can't be just normal amnesia because they lost their memories after finding an Abyssal.
>>
>>37686244
"Amnesia, of some kind," you ponder aloud, "barring some sort of time travel shenanigans that I highly doubt."

"It could be that they were captured in combat, but I don't think the Abyssal has ever done that before. Plus, I kinda doubt it would let them go."

"Which leaves one possibility," Yamato frowns. "That what you remember is another version of you engaging and participating in the sinking all four."

You fear that you've come to the same conclusion. Any other possibility just seems more and more far-fetched.

"It would explain Number Three's willingness to die," you admit.

"But not how they returned anyway," Yamato points out. "The major naval powers that possess kanmusu keep careful track of figures: losing a whole squadron is unheard of. In fact, we've never lost a girl! I'm actually rather proud of that... we all are."

Nagato's expression is nearly impossible to read...

It's hatred.

You've never seen Nagato look that way before. Not when talking to the ships she fought before during the war, not with you, not even in battle with an Abyssal. Her eyes are filled with a burning rage that even catches the usually-unflappable Yamato off her guard.

"Nagato?" you ask, already understanding what she's no doubt concluded in her own mind. "What is it?"

Your old friend doesn't look at you, perhaps ashamed to show that sort of emotion among friends. "I always had trouble believing that," she admits.

Yamato picks up on what's been worrying you as well. "You mean, having never lost a kanmusu?"

Nagato nods firmly. "They split us up into small teams and scatter us. We have only their word that none of us have died."

"And when you fight a war, soldiers die," you add.

Nagato forces a gloomy smile as she turns to face you. "They created us all once. We would be fools to think they could not do it again..."

Treating them like weapons isn't necessarily treating them like crap. I'm sure the last thing a sailor wanted to do in a war was mistreat his ship after all. Survival and victory depended on it.

This is going straight into "what is a kanmusu" territory.

Maybe I worded that wrong.

But from what we saw back at Pearl, most people were ambivalent at best, the one Admiral was chill and the perv was a perv, though he's probably just that way to everyone and likes to do it to ships too.

But yes, this is headed straight into "What is Kanmusu" territory, so unless you also want to go there, I think we should stop.

You place a reassuring hand on Nagato's shoulder, her skin warm under your unnaturally cool touch. Her own hand finds yours as you tell her what she already knows.

"You think they've been replacing you?" you mutter. "That every time one of the kanmusu dies there's another lined up to take their place?"

"In smaller teams they'll be more likely to be wiped out entirely on one mission," Yamato observes, her face turning pale in disgust. "And if a few survive, just run them on a suicide mission and replace them all in one go."

"After all these years we think we have come so far," Nagato growls bitterly. "And yet they still see us as expendable. A resource to be thrown at problems until none remain, then casually replaced."

"Does anyone else have gaps like that?" you ask Yamato.

She shakes her head. "Many of us have nightmares, though... nightmares of whole teams being sunk repeatedly aren't actually uncommon, especially among the furthest units afield. We thought it was stress."

"The Maternity Ward," Nagato mutters. "They must have some way of distributing them from ports or airfields nearby."

"Our new mission is to hopefully end the war," Yamato realizes aloud. "Once the war is over..."

Methinks the first thing to do would be asking them how they want to be treated. They might not all have the same opinion.

Though really I doubt that is on the minds of the people in charge. They started this whole thing for a rather specific purpose, defeating the abyss.

No you're not. It's time to stop thinking like that.

You are more than Nagato: you are a living, breathing person. You have hopes and fears, you love your sister and your friends, and you have pride in your abilities. Gone are the days when you were a cold, unthinking, unfeeling mass of steel and steam.

So why do they insist on treating all of you like your lives don't matter? Why did they lie to you?

>>37688121
Simpler than you think.
A Kanmusu is the ultimate specialist unit. They are a specialized soldier capable of feats of greater precision amd power than their size and weight should permit, and are as such an important resource in a war.

The fact they can be cloned and deployed even after death makes them all the more valuable, because that means they are a soldier that doesn't need to be trained. They can even have more than one of the same Kanmusu active at the same time, as long as they make sure they aren't in the same theater.

Ideally, they would be treated the same way an officer is treated, and that IS happening, since Kanmusu do have an exclusive O-club and a measure of respect. In fact, they have been shown to be very well regarded and respected, besides the whole "Denying a person their Eternal Rest" thing (which is how Kanmusu came to be in the first place), isand the worst they have to deal with is few asshole officers and constantly being sent to battle Demon Ships from the Deep, things any soldier in this world would have to deal with.

For most of the part, the Navy appears to be doing their best to treat them humanely while being pragmatic, something understandable, especially when your enemies are Demon Ships from the Depths of the Ocean.

Of course, this may change as we see more of the world and the military.

>I highly doubt that the Kanmusu feel being used like disposable tissues is a good thing. Most living beings don't.
You might be right, but Kanmusu are not most living beings. They possess the spirits of tools of war that are very much supposed to be used to their fullest and repaired or replaced as necessary.

I think it's unwise to make assumptions about their nature, instead it would be better to ask what they think.

>>37688620
Well that certainly shows how Nagato feels.

Well Nagato wonders why they lied. I have a question then, how much do the kanmusu socialize with humans then? Have they ever had a chance to learn to think differently about kanmusu? I'd like to think any that attitude is a product of a lack of anything but formal interaction.

>Don't think that way, Yamato.
>>
>>37688620
"We know too little to jump to that sort of conclusion, Yamato," you tell her. "But there has to be some way to figure out the truth of their intents."

"I'm just afraid that once the war is over, they won't need to revive the kanmusu who don't make it," Yamato sighs back at you. "And there will be many. I don't doubt that."

The room falls into an uncomfortable silence.

"We could talk to that Clarke guy?" Mary suggests. "He seemed like a decent sort."

"The JMSDF and USN consolidated their operations as we were redeployed here," Yamato points out. "It's down at the Kure Arsenal. It wouldn't take more than a half dozen of us to take it over, ensure that the main task force revives as they're lost."

Both of those ideas have some merit: one is tactful and diplomatic, you realize. But the other is more like what a girl with the soul of a battleship should want, you feel.

Even Mary seems to be contemplating the option.

>>37689702
Kanmusu are a paradigm shift in naval combat.
See that old ship over there? That one with the a few missile batteries, and torpedo launchers?

Now it's a small girl with all the firepower it had as a ship. And now she can run circles around your ships and fire her weapons faster than your ship can turn.

And what about that old Aircraft carrier there? It served a long time, used to launch Tomcats, Hornets, amd even a couple F-35s before it was mothballed.

Now it is a busty woman who can launch miniature drones at the drop of a hat. Drones with missiles and bombs way more potent than they should be able to carry.

That kind of thing won't become obsolete any time soon.
>>
>>37689907
Wouldn't it be less conspicuous to just act like you're exploring instead of launching planes?
>>
>>37689373
You speak up, finally breaking the silence. "We can do both. Hope for the best when asking Admiral Clarke, but plan for the worst. We should at least scout out the facility at Kure."

Yamato nods in agreement. "That sounds like it a solid plan."

"Wait," Mary mutters. "Kure Arsenal... it's on a harbor, yes? Not inland?"

You nod. "Correct. Why?"

"The Abyssal keeps track of shipping lanes," Mary reminds you. "We may be able to cover our tracks by telling everyone we're trying to protect the base from a possible Abyssal raid."

"And we'd want to do that anyway," Yamato observes. "If the Abyssal destroys that base, it'll make our long-term mission a LOT harder."

"Very well," you conclude. "That seems to settle matters."

Exactly. The idea that kanmusu won't be revived after the war is over is absurd.
Kanmusu provide all the firepower and abilities of any conventional ship in a smaller, cheaper package.
The only thing they can't do is transport personnel and cargo.

>>Explain to your team what you've found, leave it to Yamato to deal with the others at her own discretion
If we drag our team into this, they should know. They should still know even if we don't drag them into it so they can ask us about it later and then be concerned if we're 'disappeared' and replaced with a pod person.

We're only scouting though, not taking any action right now. It's far too early to be thinking of taking action when the war isn't even over. Best to keep this quiet until we actually talk to the admiral(s) and see which way the wind is blowing.

We could be blowing things out of proportion and looking for the worst sorts of explanation for things. It could be that the people in charge kept this quiet not just for morale but because they cared on a more personal level.

We still need to investigate.
