Loss so much loss, yesterday you had a thriving hive with growing numbers and today you have nothing of the sort. Your scouts are gone, what took them you know not, at least lands far away have been found and you can rest knowing that their efforts were not in vain. But your soldiers were decimated without a moment's notice, it was as if their armor offered no protection. It is very disturbing to think that perhaps you are well adapted to this planet, are you a faulty queen, is that why you were abandoned in the void?

But you cannot dwell in such thoughts, not now, you must expand, you must grow, and you will not give up and go quietly into the night. If these predators are so dangerous is due to their intelligence, they certainly do not behave like most animals. There is a purpose behind their actions, and your underestimation of their abilities led to the death of many, many drones. You will not make the same mistake once again, this time you will be prepared for their trickery. It seems they go after the heat generated by the endothermic adaptations of your drones, perhaps a to shield that would be important.

Today is a new day, today you can change the direction of the future, your hive will survive, it will thrive and you will make sure of that. But first, you need a plan of action, currently your nutrient reserves will last due to the resent loss of drones, and the farms are near completion. But there are things you can do to increase productivity and infrastructure even more.

Construction:
>[]Versper Pens(1day)(to keep the little bats when using them as livestock)(4N per pen, 3 bats per pen)(4 workers required)
>[]set the underground river as a source of nutrients by turning into an aquatic farm(20N)(2 workers)(production 50N)
>[]fence off the wild animals 20K away(50N 8winter-workers)

It is perhaps wise to add other sources of nutrient income to the hive and the underground river will provide a small but useful amount of sustenance. Your two workers get busy trying to convert the walls and cavern into a suitable environment to harvest nutrients from the water itself. The lack of algae leads you to believe that its a separate niche as that of the above ground river.

But this makes your worker base dwindle, it is wise to lay more winter drones for the moment, they will not be ready for a day but at least you will have some future security. Carefully you have eggs placed in the hatchery, thinkers will be a good addition as well, it seems many paths of research are opening and your current workforce just cannot keep up with the demand.

your workers arrive at the river, no signs of the predators nearby. This is good, the carrion floats downriver towards the crabs, you could one of several things to obtain the extra nutrients.

Your two workers allow you to see what they see, and while you knew that food would be plentiful here, well you did not expect so much of it. The mounds are full today, the crustaceans are busily separating the carrion and stripping the bones from everything else. There are large piles of bones nearby that you had not noticed before, but they do not matter at the moment, there are enough nutrients here to feed the hive forty times over. But with only two drones, you can only carry so much back to the hive before growing weary, the sun is not starting to go down and you are merely on the third trip back to the hive.

You could do about three more trip yielding you an extra 150N But would that be wise? You weight in your options.

It takes a few more trips but your workers manage to scrounge up more nutrients and carry them all back to the hive in relative safety, which is good seeing how the temperatures have dropped immensely and is not nighttime. You realize that not once have you truly explored the nightlife of the planet, albeit you have done very little exploring of the surrounding area let alone the entire planet. This could be a good opportunity to go and explore, who knows what you may find at this time.

You decided to add a few more winter workers to the hatchery, another eight eggs. Easy enough of a task, if costly but you can afford them for the moment. You have your two workers stand guard outside in the frigid temperatures, If only there were others to rotate them, the cold is unforgiving, but the workers soldier on. Just then one of the sentries spots a bright light in the night sky, your other sentry also see's it, like comet blazing a trail. Its beautiful, however you notice that its losing altitude, the trajectory of the object is similar to that of a meteorite, it has entered atmosphere, and from the look of things its large, the sound-wave reaches your workers after a good minute, its far away, the object disappears behind some mountains, perhaps crashing several hundreds of kilometers away.

Very much so. I'm totes okay with metal pushing and ignoring the outside world for a bit. as boring as turtling up is its been repeatedly proven this environment is DEADLY as FUCK.

If we want a chance in hell at ever making it here we need a powerful strong force. And given how efficent the keeks are at killing it needs to be divide betweend two major groups

Rank and file warriors bred fast, cheap to maintain and spawn and basically mookpower for when its viable.

When its not viable we have a more prepared and elite but fewer in number caste with our most brutal and nasty setups possible. We'll likely start with this just to combat the keek menace and whatever else is out there.

After that though I'm pretty okay with hordes of disposable mooks protecting our more elite core and heavy weaponry. Best advantage we got is breeding and numbers besides our insane DNA alteration skills putting zerg to shame. If we're built up enough we can afford to lose a few hundred warriors. most other races can't use such tactics.

Now, due to flight being bad in cold weather, I thought up a design that would trap the warmth.

For starters, the drone's body will be a long and thin cylinder. Any ways to cut down weight, from light armor to no means of feeding itself, will be taken. We'll have to make feeder drones, but I believe it would be worth it. Back on topic, the Drone's wing should be a thin strip of skin that wraps around the main body. This would give it a screw-like appearance, much like Leonardo da Vinci's helicopter design. This screw-body will be housed in another cylinder, open on both ends. The outside of the outer cylinder should be furry and have as many adaptations to stop heat loss as possible.

The cold air will enter the screw housing, warming as it is moved through the tube. With a very tight thread, it should produce enough lift. Mount a sting launcher( that what the SMGs are called?) at the intake and you have a fighting drone. Give me a moment to draw it up

I'm willing to confirm and rush farm if the rest are. we need that damn food and we needed it yesterday.

the traps...well if we're quick about it it could work without a KEEK moment. Put sharp jags at the pits bottom I want it dead or maimed and I'm down for the attempt. If we can spare the numbers at least.

I'm still gunning for fruits and nuts. its quick and would finish just as the farm did if we started now. after we got +400N we can really ramp things up and plan.

Huh and prepare. I just realized if the keeks use thermal sight and the hive get too big as a heat source....
>>
>>37715290

4 normal workers on the farm
2 winter workers as sentries
1 winter worker as helper to thinkers
5 miners building tunnel

13 winter workers idle
4 normal workers idle
3 first clutch workers idle
>>
>>37715150
Remember that they seem to be kinda smart, so a plain heat gland ain't cutting it. A sacrificial worker that bursts into glue could work.
Or just make punji sticks made out of cold chitin against these fuckers. Build them in tunnels below surface, lay membrane, get the sacrifice to run over the punji trench while being pursued by a Keek.
Otherwise, develop projectile weapons and just snipe the fuckers.
>>
>>37715328
If they're alive in the pit we can just drop rocks on them or bury them alive and dig out the corpses after they've smothered.
>>
>>37715365
Keeks will probably come for the worker running or not. No need to complicate things. It can just stand there.

I think we need new scouts. We'll just have to keep ground eyes on them next time. It'll narrow their operations area but we will know what's taking them if we lose one

Get the first clutch to work on a farm with some winters
normals take over farm

until we grab keek.

Lay a few scout drones.

my terrible MSPaint drawing.

After careful thought, I decided that having a Sting Launcher would weight too much for these cat-sized drones. Instead, I added a small explosive(which we'd need to figure out, till then acid would work) for it's weapon. I think it could carry about to of the bombs, and then have to restock at a supply drone/the hive. Working in swarms, these drones could easily kill Keeks by staying out of reach and dropping their payloads

Welp thats one part of the gameplan setup. Now that we've finally hit the farming stage starvation is no longer a serious threat and we can begin to focus on tackling the wild life.

Seems like we need mainly three things for that.

Effective Scouts with low thermal signature. alot of species here seem to sense it way too well.

Effective Heavy Duty shock troopers for wading in and dishing out extreme punishment. And surviving it to maximize damage.

Effective Ranged Killers, with the more dangerous life it seems like strong armor is common. need armor piercing of extreme levels to efficently kill alongside good senses.

Then theres an effective mook supply. should we stick with a winterized standard warrior or try and tailor them to the task? Melee fodder or cannon spam? thicken the chitin and add redundant organs to improve meat shield power or purposely make them weaker to reduce costs? All while still making them viable in general use.

Ambitious? Yes. Yes it fucking is. I want to make this ice ball my bitch so hard we accidentally melt the ice with the hive we will build!

Ooh, balloon bomb sentries sounds cool. Can we make them drop weighted chitin spikes? Keeks won't know what hit them.
But then again, we don't know what took out our airborne scout - could it be the superpredator of the skies? Flying Keek?
>>
>>37715887
Thats.. no drone its a freaking weather balloon...a furry tubular weather balloon.
>>
>>37715926
That is a problem, but we could save them as Keek hunters. They're not that big, so they wouldn't cost that many nutrients to make one. Keep them indoors, then when a worker gets KO'ed, send in the swarm. It also paves the way to VTOL aircraft drones and the Helicarrier

For the first time since your eyes activated and your senses expanded you can allow yourself to feel happy. It seems things finally are coming together, you have a farm that will start producing food by tomorrow morning and you will no longer feel like you starve. But this is not enough, no for there still are perils to face and a planet to conquer. A burning desire spreads in your will, your drones can feel it. “We work, we live, we die. All for MOTHER!” A second farm starts its construction, food will not be in shortage for you, never again. NEVER.

Before assigning tasks to your various thinkers you feed them the visual information from your sentries, that object falling, you must know more. The thinkers struggle all six of them focused on the same thing, trying to convey some meaning to the randomness. The answers are not what you expected, they give you a rough estimate of location based on some mathematics principles and data extrapolation. But what is interesting is that some of the images show small explosions , this could be chunks of rock getting loose and bursting upon high velocity impact with the atmosphere. However the color indicates a chemical explosion. The object did not seem to have any steering capabilities, at least none where in use, the thinkers conclude it was a natural phenomenon.

Having accomplished their task you set them into researching the plant life. With giddy enthusiasm they quickly get right into it. They are adorable in that way, and your love for their antics is never ending. This planet offers many dangers for your hive to surmount, but the hive will endure. For now its a question of choosing what to do.

Hmm, this just means we could have a rival bioengineer species that isn't Hive crashing by... or it's just another meteor.
But it's never that simple, isn't it?

Also, lay one of the balloon sentries to get an aerial view. Someone else do the stats/nutrients for them?
>>
>>37716094
I'd like to check on the Herds, maybe kill a juvenile to get data on them. Maybe we could learn how to armor our drones better from them

Thanks if there was one thing that bugged me about Hive Queen Quest Alpha it was how they completely abandonded a perfectly viable tactic of using literal waves of troops.

Except for mechanoid life forms or another hive we have them bent over the table in troop replacement capacity. Hell we could technically try and hunt the keeks directly using suicide bombers and drive them out of our territory. The drones said it themselves.

>We work, we live, we die. All for MOTHER!
They are literally happy and okay to die for us. I'm rather okay with that being used against a serious menace if required. Hell of a waste though.
>>
>>37716123

Supporting, however we might need strains from local wildlife who adapted well to the cold- acquire some keeks? iirc they adapt well to cold.
As for activity, lay cold resistant workers.

Ok we need to design this variant then:

Winged Winter Worker
Olfactory: Basic 0
Acoustic: Medium 1
Psionic: Basic 0
Mandible: Construction 1
Blade: Tool 1
Arms: Dex 1
Endothermic organ 4
Quadruped Radiator wings: 3
Legs: Endurance 1
Carapace: Basic 0
Size: Medium

Cost: 11N
Upkeep: 6N

That is our scout, which is basically a flying winter worker. Lets throw out and add stuff as needed to fit the design we want.

Post suggestions and discussions, I want bomber and long range scouts designed today so next quest we can use them.
>>
>>37716223
That's because one effective fighter is more cost efficit than 20 garbage ones. Our capacity to replace may be great but there's no need to limit quality and tactical refinement until they stop being effective
>>
>>37716223

I would have sent wave after wave of worker after lyle, but that's just me.
>>
>>37716508
Which is why I'm happy with a hybrid approach. rank and file to apply steady pressure and a hardened core of asskickers to break their backs in relative safety abusing the mooks.

>>37716497
The real issue is the things a giant heat magnet we can't fix this yet.. we'd probably have to study local life forms for their methods of heat retention or cold based anatomy to fix this. Anyone got ideas on that? Maybe some kind of thermal vision to start with since its obviously effective.
>>
>>37716497
So, this is gonna be the screw drone?
>>
>>37716497
Buff olfactory to 2-3 as well as acoustic, weaken legs but buff wings also if possible increase eyes.
>>
>>37716617
So it'd be a hopper? Its legs and claws ought to be able to dig into the local trees then so it spends zero time at ground level between flights. literally cling to a tree or something.
>>
>>37716729
Basically yes, no time on ground all in sky, buff end again if we have too.
>>
>>37716608
There was research into hiding thermal signature but it was not started, other research was chosen instead.

>>37716615
Its a wire-frame for it, for now.
>>
Screw Drone
Olfactory: Advanced
Acoustic: Medium 1
Psionic: Basic 0
Mandible: None
Blade: None
Arms: Dex 1
Endothermic organ 4
Quadruped Radiator wings: 3
Legs: Hop(lots of fast twitch muscles, few slow)
Carapace: Basic 0
Size: Small

This is a basic outline for the screw drone. I took out the things that seem useless, due to it's purpose. You don't see bombers outfitted for fighting fires, so I stripped out everything that would add weight and cost. Upped the nose on it, as the thing's gonna need a way to find it's targets
>>
>>37716972
This is good considering we can't upgrade eyes. Maybe buff ears as well?
>>
>>37716985
Seems good, as the Keeks make lot of noise when they attack
>>
>>37716972
You gave the critter that relies on pointing in one direction and pulling the air above it olfactory only eyes?

That seems like a poor choice. Especially in an environment where we don't know what anything is or what it smells like
>>
>>37717065
Hence why I suggested increased auditory strength as well. Like the vespers.
>>
>>37716972

cost 9N
upkeep: 4N

I like it.

Buff up the auditory as much as possible without increasing the weight.
